REMEMBERING BILL CARTER

BY: CIERA ANCELL

The Joplin community is mourning the loss of Mr. William “Bill” C. Carter, a former Head of School and longtime educator whose influence extended far beyond the classroom and the basketball court. Known for his

dedication, leadership, & deep care for students,

Bill Carter left a lasting legacy at TJ and within the lives of countless athletes and colleagues

Those who knew him often speak of Coach Carter’s ability to bring out the best in others. He was demanding when needed, supportive always, and deeply invested in the success of his students not just as players or scholars, but as people. His presence at the school shaped a culture of accountability, humor, and heart.

“He was like a father to me. We talked about more than just basketball; we talked about life.”

One former student, Kasey (Currence) Guthrie, Class of 2006, shared a memory that reflects the impact Coach Carter had on those he mentored. Kasey played under him for four years and recalls that he was far more than a coach. He cared about his athletes beyond the game and formed relationships that lasted long after graduation She remembers the laughter they shared, including how people often mistook her for his daughter, and how, during those formative years, he truly felt like a second father to her.

Coach Carter was known for his toughness, his passion, and his ability to demand greatness Kasey was part of the team when he earned his 500th win as a head coach, a milestone that reflected not only success on the court, but years of dedication to his athletes. Even after graduation, they stayed in touch, most recently reconnecting just before the holidays in December.

These longstanding mentorships and friendships were shared by faculty and staff alike. Coach Carter was a close and trusted confidant to many.

Señora Cole remembers waking up girls with time to spare and Coach Carter lovingly correcting her, shaking his head and smiling warmly, “Darn rookie.”

From that day on, “Rookie of the Year” became her nickname, and Cole said it felt like an honor. Once he gave you a nickname, you knew you belonged. Cole said that was Coach Carter: always smiling, always ready with a story, and always looking out for the people around him.

Mrs. Mary Arnold, a beloved retired TJ elementary teacher, remarked that “he had an extraordinary gift for meeting students exactly where they were and helping them believe in themselves With his kind heart and teddy-bear disposition, Bill made students feel safe, seen, and encouraged whether he was cheering them on from the sidelines or offering a word of support in the hallway.”

“For me, personally, he’s the reason why I’m here,” added Coach Chris Myers, current director of athletics and varsity boys’ basketball coach.

Coach Carter’s impact on individuals within the TJ community parents, faculty, and students is incalculable Through his warm smile, strong discipline, and deep care, Bill Carter has helped shape the spirit of TJ into what it is today.

As the community reflects upon Bill Carter’s life and legacy, our thoughts are with his children, with Bonnie, and with all who loved and learned from him He will be deeply missed, but his influence will continue to live on

through the many lives he shaped.
