A Charming Tradition by the Sea

With the sound of the surf as its soundtrack and the quaint charm of Capitola Village as its stage, the Capitola Art & Wine Festival has delighted locals and visitors alike for over four decades. The festival was born in 1982, thanks to the vision and creativity of the late Carrie Jacobson May, Barbara Reding, and Eric Johnson. Their dream was to celebrate local talent, and so, with 50 artists lining the Esplanade, the inaugural Capitola Village Art Festival came to life.

In 1983, the Capitola Chamber of Commerce joined the effort, and with the artistic touch of the late Jay Collins—who designed the first official poster—the event took on new life. That same year, wine tasting was introduced, giving the festival its signature blend of fine art and regional wine, and inspiring its new name: The Capitola Art & Wine Festival.

From 1984 onward, the festival grew in both scale and spirit. Food vendors joined the scene, custom wine glasses became a beloved tradition, and live entertainment filled the air. With each passing year, more wineries, artists, and performers have added their color and creativity to this treasured community celebration. The Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce continues to host this iconic event with the help of over 400 dedicated volunteers whose energy, spirit, and hard work are essential to the festival’s success. As the organizer and driving force behind the festival, the Chamber is proud to present a vibrant celebration that reflects Capitola’s artistic soul, coastal charm, and enduring sense of community. Without a doubt, it’s our favorite weekend of the year!

Must be 21+. Wine tasting requires purchase of 2026 Festival Glass ($20) and Tasting Tokens ($1 each). 2-5 tokens per tasting, depending on the wine of choice.

Capitola Mall Parking and FREE Bike Valet & Shuttle

Look for Festival Parking & Shuttle signs located near the Halloween Headquarters parking area at the Capitola Mall on 41st Avenue and ride the FREE SHUTTLE to the Festival. Shuttle drops off at the Festival entrance. Shuttles run approximately every 20 minutes. Saturday, September 13: 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM; and Sunday, September 14: 9:30 AM to 7 PM.

Forgo parking hassles and ride your bike to the Festival. Staffed by Harbor High Leadership students, bike valet parking is located in the David Lyng Real Estate parking lot across from the Festival entrance at the corner of Capitola & Stockton Avenues.

This Year's Capitola Art & Wine Poster Artist – Jacqué Price

Volunteering isn’t just about lending a hand — it’s your chance to soak up the energy of the festival, meet amazing people, and be part of a beloved community tradition. Whether you’re with friends or flying solo, you’re sure to make memories (and new friends) along the way.

A little history: A mermaid adorned the very first Capitola Art & Wine Festival glass back in 1987, but she disappeared from the design soon after. In 2017, local artist Maia Negre brought her back for the festival’s 35th anniversary, reimagining the original logo and restoring the mermaid to her rightful place of honor.

To participate in wine tasting, you’ll need to purchase a 2026 Festival Glass ($20) and Tasting Tokens ($1 each), available at Glass & Token booths throughout the festival. Tastings range from 3 to 5 tokens depending on the wine. *Must be 21 or older to purchase glass, tokens, or participate in wine tasting.

Silver Mountain Vineyards: Sip Above the Clouds

Perched at 2,100 feet in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Silver Mountain Vineyards offers more than exceptional wine—it offers a breathtaking high-elevation experience with sweeping views over the mountains toward Monterey Bay. Founded more than 50 years ago by Jerold O’Brien, a former Air Force fighter pilot, Silver Mountain has become a true mountain winery by the sea, known for resilience, craftsmanship, and Gold Medalwinning wines.

The estate vineyards are certified organic and planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Toy Takeover! Capitola Beach Festival

FESTIVAL INTRODUCTION

The Capitola Beach Festival takes place on September 26 and 27 with this year's theme "Toy Takeover." No vendors, no food booths, just fun activities to draw you to the beach and Village to celebrate “all fun things” here in Capitola.

You are welcome to watch, but these festival activities are designed to “do”. Come run, sculpt in sand, paddle, paint with chalk, fish, toss, dance, scavenge, or row a boat. Most events are free. Claim a space along the beach lagoon or bridge to watch the Saturday night Lighted Nautical Parade on Soquel Creek, followed by a Drone Show. Join the volunteers that perpetuate these family friendly traditional events that have put a smile on thousands of faces for decades at Capitola Beach.

Message from the Festival President

Hard to imagine that the 2026 Beach Festival celebrates its eighth anniversary. We continue to bring joy, community and visitors to Capitola Beach and Village.

This is my 7th year as Board President, and each year we just get better. I must express my personal gratitude to our spirited – “boots on the ground” team of collaborative volunteers; and equally important include my appreciation to our sponsors, without whom this festival would not be possible. Sponsor loyalty allows us to focus on producing the best possible family-friendly and FREE events.

We even surprised ourselves when at my suggestion, we produced the first ever Drone Show in Capitola. No easy feat, but our heroic team, led by Logistics Manager, Joe Palandrani, accepted the challenge. Much to everyone’s delight – it proved to be the perfect close to our Nautical Parade.

Our Lighted Nautical Parade takes place on Saturday, September 26: watch as we launch a “Toy Takeover” themed parade on Soquel Creek and marvel at this dazzling nighttime display. This Year's Festival Marketing Artist

The works of local professional artists have graced the marketing materials for the Capitola Beach Festival from the very start.

We stand by the tradition of supporting local original art even as the world turns quickly to AI generated graphics.

This year we took a new direction by engaging an up-and-coming artist with deep Capitola roots.

Talia Levi, a 2026 UC Davis graduate, grew up attending the Begonia Festival and Beach Festival every year with her grandmother in Capitola. Inspired by those experiences, the beautiful views of Capitola Beach, and the creativity of the sandcastle contest every year, Talia's work reflects a deep appreciation for this fun event and the vibrant community spirit that makes it so special.

Sand Sculpture Contest

Mark your calendars! The annual Sand Sculpture Contest, a Capitola tradition since 1971, takes place on Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Judging starts before 2:00 p.m. and awards announced after 2:30. This year’s festival theme “Toy Takeover’ promises to inspire creativity and imagination in sculptors of all ages.

Join us for this wonderful free, family-friendly event that invites participants to unleash their artistic flair by creating whimsical sand sculptures using natural materials found right on the beach. Whether you’re a seasoned sand artist or just looking to have some fun with family and friends, there are multiple categories to compete in, including divisions for children (ages 8 and under and 9-14), small groups, large groups, and adult-child teams.

Capitola provides the perfect backdrop for a day of creativity and community spirit. With its picturesque wooden wharf, scenic waterfront walkway, vibrant downtown shops, amazing restaurants and, of course, its stunning beach, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, all within walking distance.

Participants are encouraged to bring their shovels, buckets, sand sculpting tools, and beach chairs to fully embrace the fun. Build close to the surf. But watch out for high tide!

Enjoy a day in the sun, relax by the waves, and join fellow beach lovers in this delightful contest that celebrates art and community. We can’t wait to see what imaginative creations you bring to life at the 2026 Sand Sculpture Contest at Capitola Beach.

Scavenger Hunt

The Capitola Beach Festival will present its Scavenger Hunt event for its 5th season. Participants explore Capitola’s historical landmarks, history, and points of interest during a leisurely walk throughout Capitola Village. Stop by our table at Esplanade Park on Saturday, September 26th, between Noon and 4PM, to begin your adventure.

The Scavenger Hunt is different each year. Each participating group is given a map with points of interest and a series of questions (multiple choice) that they try to answer. You get a nice tour around Capitola Village, and it makes you see things that you have probably passed by a hundred times and barely noticed. It’s always an enjoyable activity.

This event engages all age groups in actively exploring their surroundings. Younger children can join their parents, older kids and adults can team up with their friends, and husbands and wives may compete against each other to see who can finish first. When you return your map, you get a small reward from the “party favor” box. It’s all playful fun and FREE!

This year we are adding a special finale to the hunt. Your last activity can be making a brass rubbing of one of the sea creatures embedded into the Capitola Wharf. We will supply paper and crayons. Can’t wait to see the rubbing you make.

Horseshoes in the Sand

Come to play or just watch the “shoes” fly. This free professional and amateur tournament is open to both experienced players and beginners. Teams formed by drawing. Prizes for 1st -3rd, Broken Shoe, and Six Packs.

Cornhole Tournament

In 2022 the Beach Festival put decks on the beach, tossed out some beanbags, and the games began. Stop by after 11:00 am on Saturday, September 26, at Capitola Beach. Look for the giant banner. Warm up – toss a few – and sign up for a bit of competition. We are still looking for some fun-loving volunteers to help us pull this one off. Visit our website for details and drop us a note. 4th Annual CBF Paddleboard Races

Capitola Beach Festival will once again feature Paddle Board Races off Capitola Beach.

This year’s races will include a two-mile course for both SUP and prone paddleboards, a GROM Paddle Race around Capitola Wharf for SUP or prone, and a brand-new Open Ocean Swim Around Swim Around the Wharf Race.

This year’s paddle events are designed for the whole family – from first time young competitors to seasoned watermen and waterwomen!

With racing, ocean fun, and divisions for all ages, this year’s races promise to be one of the most exciting family-friendly events on the Bay! Even if you are not there to race, you can enjoy the beach and hang out with a great group of stoked ocean lovers.

So Good to be a Firefly

When the 2025 Lighted Nautical Parade was ending, the crowd began chanting “so good” as the “Fireflies” performed to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”.

Who are the Fireflies? And how did they join the parade?

In 2017, as part of the last Begonia Festival, Parade Manager Thea Luiten recruited kayak savvy friends as Water Marshals, to provide guidance and safety in Soquel Creek throughout the parade. These kayakers, along with Thea, introduced a synchronized start for the festivities. It was “So good”; but, why stop there? Since the 2018 start of the Lighted Nautical Parade this group has kept their important “marshal” role as well as perfecting their lighted “Fireflies” performance persona.

Decked out with lighted wings, paddles and kayaks, this Firefly group consists of Sandy Thorpe, Gail-Jean Sais, Beverly Connelly, Jenny Sant’Anna, Karena Pushnik, and Anita Liesen.

The team practiced at the Santa Cruz Harbor until the Winter of 2023 washed away their equipment. Capitola Boat and Bait and friends stepped in to support their effort to be in the 2024 parade. In 2025, the Fireflies’ role expanded to two kayak dances.

Sandy Thorpe, group choreographer, excitedly reports “The Fireflies received so much attention that we have been invited to perform in Pacific Grove’s Summer Lights Festival on July 25 at Lovers Point.”

Come find out what the Fireflies will perform on Saturday September 26th. It will be surprising and certainly enjoyable.

Rowboat Races for Everyone!

The Rowboat Races are a series of timed head-to-head races that go up and down Soquel Creek, between the bridge and trestle. Groups of two compete in races for the best time in their age group:

• Youth 12 and under

• Juniors 12-17

• Adults 18-30

• Masters 31 & Over

These rowboat races are unpredictable and a crowd favorite. No experience necessary – just life jackets.

A fun event for both spectators and participants. There are annual revenge matches amongst the adults and first-time rowboat experiences for the youngsters. The crowds cheer and there are groans when the boats row in circles or get tangled in the creek side bushes.

Two to a boat – one who rows and the other serves as passenger. The passengers, depending on their skill and relationship to the rower, have been described as captain, coach or just ballast. Sign up is Noon – 1:00 Sunday, September 27 at Stockton Bridge! No late entries. Waivers are required and parents need to sign up children. The races start at 1:00 pm. Free.

Begin the festival on Saturday morning, September 26th with a family fun run/walk starting at East Cliff Village Shopping Center and covering three miles along the Santa Cruz coastline, ending at Capitola Esplanade.

Wharf to Wharf Race, Inc., a Beach Festival partner since 2018, hosts this event to fund youth sports in Santa Cruz County. The 3-mile race, with fully shut down roads, is the perfect introduction race for children who are looking to try out a longer distance. It is also a perfect event for parents/grandparents to run/walk a race with their kids for the first time.

Little Wharf 3-Miler Capitola Fishing Derby

The Fishing Derby on Capitola Wharf started in 1967 and we welcome anglers, near and far, to enjoy the amenities of our recently refurbished Wharf.

The crew starts the event in darkness, preparing for the Derby and meeting those ready to harvest from the deep. Excitement builds throughout the morning as fish, some large and some ridiculously small, are presented to the crew to be recorded, admired, and celebrated. There are awards for the largest, smallest and the greatest number of fish in several age categories. Thank you to Capitola Boat and Bait for their assistance.

Ukuleles in Esplanade Park

Every Sunday morning, as the mist lifts off Monterey Bay and the seagulls begin their lazy glide over the shoreline, something magical happens beneath the Bandstand in the quaint seaside village of Capitola. Floating into the salty and sometimes misty air, a chorus of cheerful strums and voices come from 50-70 ukuleles and their players.

The Capitola Ukulele players have been filling hearts with joy and happiness for over 20 years. This group of musicians gathers without fail, rain or shine, to play songs from the 50’s,60’s and 70’s. Their songbooks include nearly 1,000 pages of music, from Elvis to the Beatles, from Motown classics to groovy beach tunes, every song is a trip down memory lane. It’s impossible not to get swept up in the spirit of the music.

Spectators crowd around the Bandstand and tap their feet and sing along. Children dance, sing and hula hoop while the ukulele’s bring joy and happiness to the group. Hula hooping is a favorite activity for young and old during the morning fun. To watch them play is to be reminded of the simple power of music…the way it brings people together. For over two decades the Players have created more than music. They’ve built a tradition, a family, a community and a legacy of joy and happiness.

Come and hear them play on Sunday, September 27 at Esplanade Park. You too may find yourself dancing, singing, and smiling with the rest of the crowd, caught up in the magic of the ukulele.

Chalk Art on the Sea Wall Children's Art Drone Show

It was the talk of the town. Did you SEE it? DID YOU SEE IT!!? Our first ever drone show in Capitola? The Capitola Beach Festival put on one magnificent light show last September as part of its Saturday night events.

To the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey, two hundred lighted drones, operated by Skye Dreams, LLC, rose to the sky above Capitola Beach shortly after the Nautical Parade ended. The crowds roared with amazement.

What followed was a medley of beachy music as drones maneuvered overhead showing scenes of surfing, paddleboarding, sailing, fishing, sand sculptures, fireworks, and our sponsor, all in dazzling colored lights. With each new scene, the spectators oohed and aahed. What a fantastic close to the first night of our festival!

So, guess what! We are doing it again. Don’t miss it on Saturday, September 26, 2026. We will be putting on another drone show at about 9:00 pm. Come down early to pick your spot on the beach or Stockton Bridge, to watch the Nautical Parade at dusk, and enjoy this fascinating spectacle once again. Sponsored by De Mattei Construction, Inc.

After a fun filled day of Festival activities, head over to Soquel Creek around dusk to enjoy the glimmering float designs. Visible from the lagoon, Stockton Bridge, and the creek path, these creative barges serenely light up the Creek. Add great music and theatrics and you have a floating parade! Community participation is important to the Beach Festival. Join the fun by signing up to decorate a float for the Nautical Parade — we provide the barge and building site; your team provides creativity, lighting, and high spirits! Throw in fun music for our DJ and a bit of story. Limited number of barges are available.

Float Teams lay claim to bragging rights for competing in Capitola’s only floating parade and compete for cash awards for their favorite charities:

Lighted Nautical Parade Ready for a “Toy Takeover" Vacation Shapshots Parade 2025

The 2025 Lighted Nautical Parade entertained onlookers with the theme “Vacation Snapshots”. Inspired barges featured Capitola’s historical ballroom, Capitola Queen Riverboat, century hopping time travelers, a musical “Vacay in The Cruz” and a smartphone reminiscing on a great vacation in Capitola.

With too many talented designers and performers to name, all of these float teams used technology, lights, music, and stories to capture our imaginations. Returning contender “Cork and Fork” took first place with the lit paddlewheel riverboat, creative steering from the helm, and Glenny B performing live tunes.

Team Joyism won second, with its live rock and roll band, and a backdrop of a living room TV displaying snapshots of vacation scenes. Congratulations to team leader Rupert Hart, a resilient party man. Third place was “Lonely Smartphone” from the “Jewel Boxers”, an experienced neighborhood group who always bring a new level of technology to the parade. A melancholy lost phone scrolled through its photo library, with six photo subjects in silhouette matched to original tunes.

We commend the efforts of the Capitola History Museum’s elegant and detailed account of a night at the 1920s Capitola Hawaiian Gardens. The Capitola Tap House’s time travel entry took us from beach vacations in 1900 to the future that included visions of futuristic bathing attire.

Top Four Central Coast Activities

The Central Coast of California has a wealth of outdoor activities. From the magnificent redwood forests to world-class surf, there is an abundance of recreation for most all nature enthusiasts. Below are currently the most popular pursuits – all of which can be enjoyed nearly year round.

Surfing

The stretch of surf spanning from Carmel Beach to Ocean Beach offers some of the best surf not only in California, but arguably, the planet. World-class spots such as Steamer Lane and Mavericks dot the coastline. East Cliff, West Cliff, 3-Mile, 4-Mile, Waddell, Davenport, Año Nuevo, The Jetty at Half Moon Bay, Pacifica and Ocean Beach deliver up surf for all skill levels and produce rideable waves throughout the year.

Hiking

The magnificently beautiful landscape of California especially the Central Coast begs one to explore on foot. Our mountain ranges, coastal bluffs, redwood forests and endless beaches serve up any hikers appetite. Probably the best thing about hiking is all you need is a good pair of tennis shoes and the yearning for adventure. It's an activity you can do anytime of the year with anyone –anyone for me being my pup.

Stand-Up

Paddleboarding

Stand-up Paddle Boarding (SUPping) has taken California by storm. An alternative to kayaking, it is relatively easy to learn and can be enjoyed on nearly any body of calm water be it lakes, rivers or the ocean. The more experienced SUPpers, usually with a surfing background, surf clean point break waves as the length of the board and the aid of the paddle make it easier to get into.

Biking

Whether your a road biker, mountain biker, cruiser or BMX rider, the Central Coast has the territory for all. The Santa Cruz mountains are lined with fire trails and single track good for mountain biking, BMX and cyclocross. Highway 1, Highway 9, The Empire Grade and Nisene offer challenging but exciting and fun road biking. The hardcore BMXers will want to check out the pump tracks: West Side Pump Track, Chanticleer and Harvey West.

This fall, the charm of Capitola comes alive through the eyes of forty talented artists during the 11th Annual Capitola Plein Air, a week-long celebration of creativity, community, and coastal beauty. From November 2–8, 2026, locals and visitors alike are invited to witness the artistic process unfold in real time as painters set up their easels throughout the village, capturing Capitola’s iconic scenery—its shoreline, colorful cottages, bustling streets, and serene landscapes. Hosted by the City of Capitola and the Capitola Art & Cultural Commission, this juried competition brings together top plein air artists from near and far.

Don’t Miss the Quick Draw!

On Saturday November 7th, artists will compete in a lively “Quick Draw” challenge, painting on the spot in just a few hours. Their fresh creations will then be displayed on the Esplanade, where the public can vote for their favorite piece.

Exhibition — Sunday, November 8

The week culminates on Sunday with a grand exhibition and awards ceremony at the newly renovated Capitola Community Center. All artwork will be available for viewing—and for purchase—giving the community a chance to take home a piece of Capitola’s beauty. One artist will receive First Place Honors, including a ribbon and cash prize awarded by the city.

Watsonville

Celebrate the patriotic holiday with the Spirit of Watsonville 4th of July parade as it proceeds down Main Street from St. Patrick’s Church to First Street. The parade starts at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Expect classic cars, low riders, equestrian groups, marching bands and more. If you want a front row seat, get to your spot and early place a chair or blanket along the route. Spectators will usually fill the sidewalk five or six rows deep, as it’s a popular event and a great parade.

Aptos

You can’t celebrate a Fourth of July in Aptos without seeing the famously quirky “World’s Shortest Parade” as it makes its way down Soquel Drive. This year's theme is March For History: Celebrating 250 Years of America. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and features local nonprofits, vintage vehicles, musicians, marching bands, and community groups traveling the barely half-mile-long route. But please, don’t block the sidewalks with blankets and chairs before the parade. The celebration continues with Party in the Park at Aptos Village Park, where there will be live music, food vendors, drinks, family games, and a kids' zone. Roads close early, so arrive on foot or by bike.

Scotts Valley

Scotts Valley will hold a Parade & Flyover on the Fourth of July, with a block party at 5060 Scotts Valley Drive running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Fourth of July Parade and Flyover begins at 11 a.m. along Scotts Valley Drive and features community groups, decorated floats, local organizations and a lot patriotism. The block party will run before and after the parade and feature a free kids zone with games, activities, a beer garden and food trucks. Live music continues into the afternoon. The event also celebrates Scott’s Valley’s 60th anniversary.

On Sunday, Dog Day returns with fun competitions including Best Costume, Best Trick, Best Look Alike, Best Pooch Smooch, Smallest Dog, Largest Dog, Best Voice, and Fastest Fetcher. Leashed dogs are welcome on both days. Cheyanne Donald Diaz: Creating Community & Creating Art

Cheyanne Donald Diaz is the behind-the-scenes creator of White Rabbit Social Club. She is also a key player in producing the Scotts Valley Art, Wine and Beer Festival. She first became involved with the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce as the Poster Artist in 2023. By 2024, she had stepped into the role of Artist Chair for the festival, and in 2025 she was involved in making it all run smoothly. She ended up being recognized as the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year to celebrate all she does.

While many people know Cheyanne for the events she produces and the community connections she helps create, her artistic journey is at the heart of everything she does: “Most of my art is based on local landmarks in Santa Cruz and how those areas make you feel. Santa Cruz is inspiring.” she says. That connection between place and emotion is a common thread throughout her work. Her pieces invite viewers to see familiar locations in a new way while reflecting their own experiences and memories. Interestingly, her path into event production grew directly from her desire to share her art. “I started creating events just to sell my art,” she says. “I needed the venue, so I made it happen. I then started running events for other organizations and creating their artwork to help.”

For Cheyanne, art is most meaningful when it creates a personal connection. “I like when people can find personal experience in my art,” she says. “They look at a piece and say, ‘Oh, I know this place. I love this place and then they attach a story from their life to my art” That ability to evoke memories and emotions is one of the reasons her work resonates so strongly with local audiences.

Looking ahead, Cheyanne has several exciting projects in the works. She is currently designing a local mural for a Scotts Valley business that will be revealed soon. She is also curating a new exhibition titled Duck Duck Goose at The Paradox. The opening reception will take place on July 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and the exhibit will remain on display throughout the month of July. Santa Cruz to Capitola Wharf to Wharf Race

RACE DAY INFO:

START TIME: 8:00am (sharp!)

REGISTRATION: Registration for the Wharf to Wharf Race IS NOW OPEN for General Registration, official registration dates can be found in the registration tab.

REFUND POLICY: All entry fees are non-refundable, including if the race is modified or cancelled for any reason, including without limitation, natural disasters, catastrophes, pandemics, or any act of god or force majeure.

LOCATION: The Wharf to Wharf Race starts on Portola Drive near 30th Avenue.

PARKING: Traffic and parking can be a challenge, so plan on getting to Santa Cruz early. We recommend being in town between 6am and 6:30am. There is extremely limited street parking near the start line and many nearby roads are closed for the race.

DO NOT PARK ON STREETS THAT ARE POSTED NO PARKING. Parking is available in and around the the start line. Planning ahead is key! There are two main parking strategies for race day. Where you park will determine your pre-race and post-race experience:

Option 1: Drop Off at Start Line

Those who want to avoid parking logistics can get dropped off. Our drop off zone is behind the Start Line on Portola Drive between 38th Ave and 41st Ave.

Option 2: Park Near the Start Line (Santa Cruz / Purple Zone)

Park near the start line in the Santa Cruz / Eastside area and walk to your corral. This is the most convenient option for getting to the start, but requires a return trip after the race.

Key Parking Areas:

Side streets near Brommer St, Capitola Rd, 30th Ave, 38th Ave, and 41st Ave.

Nearby public lots in the 30th–41st Avenue corridor (observe all posted parking restrictions)

No race parking in Pleasure Point near the ocean

Walking to the Start:

Use 30th Avenue for Corrals E and 1

Use 35th or 38th Avenue for access to all corrals

Most parking is within 1/4 to 1 mile of the start line

After the Race:

Take a post-race shuttle from Capitola back to the start area

Pickup location: 45th Avenue & Capitola Road (near Shadowbrook)

Capitola Village closes to traffic at 5:00 AM — arrive early

Your car will be waiting for you at the finish — no return shuttle needed Race Day Tip: Carpool whenever possible to reduce traffic & parking congestion.

As stated on our registration page, on our website and in our Race Instructions, Joggers/Strollers are not permitted and will not be allowed to enter Start Corral under any circumstance. This is a safety policy. Members of the Wharf to Wharf Racing Team, along with Maps and Directories of the Start Layout will be located at each Corral Entrance.

THE COURSE

COURSE DETAILS: The scenic sixmile race is run on gently rolling hills in local seaside streets. The weather conditions for race morning are typically perfect: cool, 60 degrees, calm and foggy, but by noon, the skies are clear and warm.

START: The race begins on Portola Dr. between 26th Ave. and 38th Ave.

MILE 1: The first mile is fairly flat and fast on Portola Dr. through the East Side of Santa Cruz.

MILE 2: The second mile winds past Twin Lakes Beach and through the Harbor neighborhoods off 7th Ave.

MILE 3: The third mile wraps around the Harbor onto Lake Ave. and makes its way back onto the traditional part of the Wharf to Wharf course along the ocean.

MILE 4: The next 3 miles are gently rolling with frequent breezes as you dip in and out of ocean view.

MILE 5: Mile 5 is flat and hugs the coastline by the legendary surf spots, “The Hook“ and “Pleasure Point.”

MILE 6: The final mile drifts through local seaside streets… once the ocean reappears; it’s all downhill to the finish.

FINISH: The Finish Line is at the corner of Cliff & Wharf Rd by the Capitola Wharf.

For your safety, the course is closed to all vehicular traffic, including skateboards, bikes, wagons, wheelbarrows, roller skates/blades and baby jogger/ strollers. Pets are prohibited. Mile posts are marked splits will be called at each mile. All participants must maintain a 17-minute-per-mile pace. The race is over and the course re-opened to traffic at 10:30am. You must abandon the course at that time.

THE FINISH

FINISH LINE: The Finish Line is at Wharf Road in Capitola, but don’t stop there. Follow the signs to the beach to retrieve your giftpak, refreshments and post-race festivities. On the beach is where you can meet up with your family and friends at the “FRIENDS & FAMILY MEET UP AREA.”

That’s the dreamy and delicious theme this year, submitted by a creative member of our Fair community, Randy Fong. The Fair is also thrilled to reveal this year’s poster - an original work of art by 17-year-old Watsonville High School student, Alondra Jaramillo-Arreola.

The Santa Cruz County Fair is always looking for innovative ways to involve youth and the community in everything it does.

This year, we’ve taken that spirit straight to the Amphitheater Stage!

On Friday, September 18th, direct from Las Vegas, Santana lead singer Andy Vargas — born and raised in Watsonville — will perform.

Returning to Santa Cruz County is more than a performance for Andy; it’s a homecoming. Joining Andy and his band on select songs will be his father, mariachi maestro Javier Vargas, celebrating the roots that shaped his musical path. The Vargas legacy reflects community spirit and pride, bringing world-class artistry full circle to where it began.

On Saturday, September 19th, “American Idol” alum and Santa Cruz native James Durbin will perform with his band the Lost Boys.

“I am very proud of being a born & raised Santa Cruz local. I’m also very proud to be a 3rd generation resident of Watsonville, I now, along with my wife Heidi, live and raise our 3 children in this great community," says Durbin.

On Wednesday and Thursday, September 16th and 17th, Monster Trucks are back! We have an all-new show with the bigger and better Monster X Tour!

The Fair also features a carnival midway, livestock, magic shows, a horse show, tractor parades, and roving entertainment. Plus, all the savory and sweet fair treats you only get once a year — from funnel cakes and cinnamon rolls to fried artichokes and BBQ kabobs.

The Santa Cruz County Fair is a true destination event and one of the last old-fashioned community fairs around. Approximately 55,000 people gather at the sprawling yet cozy venue to experience the best of what friends and neighbors have to offer. Exhibits and competitions span dozens of categories including agriculture, horticulture, livestock, poultry, home arts, amateur wines, fine arts, LEGOs, poetry, youth displays, handspun and handwoven crafts, quilting, photography, floriculture, collections, and more!

The Fairgrounds are also home to a 1/4-mile dirt auto racetrack, the historic Rodgers House, and the Agricultural History Project — a nostalgic collection of equipment, tools, exhibits, tractors, and buggies. Kids can drive a tractor, and visitors can learn all about farming, both past and present.

There wouldn’t be a Fair without the Fairgrounds — and there wouldn’t be Fairgrounds without the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation. Woodies on the Wharf

Make your plans now to join us June 27, 2026 at the Santa Cruz Wharf for Northern California’s largest woodie show featuring 100’s of woodies. Admission is free and no registration fee for show cars. Woodie owners should arrive early Saturday morning (6A.M.) to secure their favorite parking spot on the wharf. There will be Santa Cruz Woodies merchandise (hats, posters & T-shirts) available to purchase during the show. Tickets will be sold for raffle prize drawings throughout the show.

Capitola History –From a Bird’s-eye View

Photographs of our built environment, whether taken from hillsides, airplanes, drones, or satellites, continue to fascinate us. An elevated perspective encourages viewers to see landscapes as related and continuous rather than as isolated points on a map. The view from above, according to the Smithsonian Institute, reveals “landscapes of beauty and symmetry that go undetected on the ground level,” transforming our sense of place.

Some of the earliest views of Capitola were bird’s-eye views - taken from an elevated view as if the viewer were a bird. Around 1875, photographer Romanzo Wood took bird’s-eye views from the high bluffs which border the resort on the west and the east, showing the rows of tents and rustics cabins which comprised Camp Capitola.

Aerial photography made its first appearance almost 170 years ago. The first successful aerial photograph was taken by photographer Gaspar Félix Tournachon in 1858 from a hot air balloon, 80 meters above the French countryside. In 1860, James Wallace Black took the first successful aerial photograph in the United States while in a balloon overlooking Boston. Though there was a balloon ascent conducted in Capitola on July 4th, 1894, by aeronaut Wesley Woodford, there is no record of him taking any photographs during his performance.

The first aerial photography was not a still photograph, but a motion picture taken in 1909 in Italy by an Italian photographer aboard an airplane piloted by Wilbur Wright. The first still aerial photograph was taken the following year by a newspaper photographer aboard a flight with Orville Wright near Dayton, Ohio.

The earliest aerial photographs of Capitola date from the 1920s. Some of these were made by Gormon Woody. A native of Kansas, Woody came to Santa Cruz as a teenager with an interest in art. In 1931, while living in Live Oak, he began working with local metal artist “Otar the Lampmaker,” making wrought iron and brass lamps and decorative screens for local businesses and homes. Later he became a master cabinet maker with the Palmer Shop. From an early age, Woody also developed a passion for photography, particularly photography from the air. From the 1920s to the 1940s Woody was often a passenger on a Waco OX5 piloted by Ray Gillen from which he captured numerous aerial views of the coastline from Santa Cruz to Aptos.

Many bird’s-eye and aerial photographs of Capitola can be seen in the Capitola Historical Museum’s 2026 exhibition entitled, Multiple Personalities – The Stories Behind Capitola’s Historic Buildings. Buzzo’s (Boot-So) Pizza is the place to go in town for your favorite pizza. Our pizza menu includes many creative pies, including potato, garlic, and cauliflower. Of course, The Margherita is always a favorite! The appetizer menu is an array of unique and delicious salads, vegetables, meatballs, and Arancini. Our Caesar Salad is a favorite among customers for its delicious taste, and freshness, as our dressing is made daily. Whale City Bakery

Since the early nineties, locals and tourists alike have enjoyed the homemade baked goods at Whale City Bakery in Davenport. A couple of years ago, one of the regulars told Jimmy Armas, owner of the bakery, that there was a vacant restaurant building Aptos. Jimmy took a look, and Whale City Aptos was born. After a few repairs, new flooring, and a general refresh, it was opened for business. Fresh baked goods from Davenport are brought to Aptos every morning for all to enjoy. One of the bakery favorites are the fresh croissants which include flavors like apricot, olallieberry, and raspberry. Pastries and breads are always available to go. In addition to nine types of omelets, breakfast choices include chilaquiles, crab cake benedict, salmon benedict, eggs Florentine, and corned beef hash, which is a fan favorite. Lunch and dinner menu items include soups, salads, burgers, grilled sandwiches, and house specials like crab cakes, calamari, and fish and chips. Local beers and wines are also on the menu.

Whale City Aptos has a very large dining room, bar, and outdoor patio overlooking Aptos Creek that is available for private parties. Eventually he hopes to create a working bakery at the lower level of the restaurant.

Armas, who also owns Las Cazuelas Restaurant in San Jose now has three restaurants. He is a hands-on owner, traveling between the three, doing what needs to be done, from bussing tables to ordering beer to sweeping, he does it all!

The Hideout

The Hideout Restaurant opened its doors in 2015 and has since become a community favorite! Owners Pete and Lisa Vomvolakis and Austin and Rachel Welch, with the help of family and friends, transformed an original 1930’s Aptos home into a beautiful new restaurant and bar.

Pete and Austin have both worked in the local restaurant industry for years and are well known in the community. With the help of locally renowned chefs, Antonio Gomez and Serafin Pantoja, The Hideout prides itself on creating classic American comfort foods: delicious appetizers and small plates to share, soups, large salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood, pasta, and other hearty entrees – something for everyone!

The Hideout is a family friendly restaurant where you can sit at the 700-year-old Redwood bar and catch a game on one of the seven large screen TV’s. Enjoy the outside atmosphere under a heated patio, cozy up to the fireplace in the main dining room or host a large party in our semiprivate Redwood Room. Customers come from all over the county for the great food and excellent customer service. The camaraderie of the customers has a comfortable social atmosphere. Serves 4

1 Salmon Filet (about 2 pounds)

½ teaspoon Salt

¼ teaspoon Pepper

3 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar

2 tablespoons Honey

1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard

1 Clove Garlic, minced

Pinch of Chili Pepper Flakes (optional)

1 tablespoon of Tarragon (optional)

Heat Oven to 400°. Season salmon with salt and pepper and place on parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Whisk together honey, vinegar, mustard, and garlic and brush over salmon. Bake 18-20 minutes or until fish starts to flake easily with fork. Sprinkle with chopped tarragon, if desired.

: Substitute maple syrup for honey. Omit chili flakes and season with freshly ground pepper.
