Scotts Valley is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of becoming a city, and we look forward to special events celebrating our unusual and interesting history. A fun fact is that Scotts Valley is where Alfred Hitchcock’s former summer home and weekend retreat, Heart of the Mountain, is located. It was frequently visited by numerous Hollywood celebrities over the years. Although the City has grown so much since then, there’s still a small town feeling that is particularly special to Scotts Valley.
Located in the redwood mountains, you’ll find beautiful parks, running & hiking trails, and just minutes away is Santa Cruz with its famous Boardwalk and beaches. The Landing, Scotts Valleys preeminent Performing Arts Center, hosts a variety of concerts, plays, comedy shows and more, including the annual Hitchcock Festival. Another crown jewel is 1440 Multiversity, which is a very special spot that has been ranked by CNN as one of the top 11 wellness retreats in the world! A beautiful and nurturing haven where people and organizations can gather in the community to explore, learn, reflect, connect, and reenergize. This unique nonprofit has established itself as a premier learning destination, having welcomed over 175,000 visitors from more than 65 countries.
Scotts Valley is business friendly and attracts various industries, including high- tech companies and their employees due to its proximity to Silicon Valley. Given its perfect climate and mountain vistas, our city is enticing to businesses and residents alike. The City of Scotts Valley and Chamber of Commerce partner to support small businesses and the community.
Scotts Valley Police Department strongly supports both businesses and residents, contributing to Scotts Valley consistently being named as one of the top 20 safest cities in the State. Our Public schools are recipients of the prestigious California Distinguished Schools award, and Scotts Valley High School includes an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Our Police Department partners closely with local schools providing youth programs including DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), Junior Police Academy, Explorer Program, and a High School Resource Officer.
The Police Department is repeatedly named the favorite government organization; we’re so proud.
Having been part of this special warm community for over 55 years, I continue to be struck by the beauty and the warmth of the people and the setting. We sincerely welcome you to our little slice of Heaven!

The Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate our strong partnership with the City of Scotts Valley as they celebrate their 60th Anniversary. Together, we support local businesses, strengthen community connections, and enhance the services that make Scotts Valley a vibrant place to thrive.
The Chamber offers a wide range of benefits to our members. These include ribbon cuttings, Chamber mixers, professional development opportunities, community networking, and marketing support through newspaper articles, radio features, and social media. Whether you are launching a new business, celebrating a milestone, or participating in one of our many annual events, we are here to help you shine.
Our signature events continue to bring our community together. The Scotts Valley Art, Wine and Beer Festival, held every year on the third weekend in August, features artists, food, classic cars, dogs, live music, beverages, a Kids Zone and more. There is something for everyone, with so many opportunities to celebrate our city, nestled in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains and just minutes from the Pacific Ocean.
Another main event is our Scotts Valley Community Awards Gala in May, where we honor individuals and organizations that make an impact on our community. It’s a chance to dress up, enjoy a special evening out, and be part of something that feels bigger than all of us. Categories include Business of the Year, Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, and Organization of the Year, amongst others. It’s an elegant and festive night that is full of heart.
We also offer several other opportunities for businesses to gain visibility and connect in the community, including the Chamber’s Annual Halloween Treasure Hunt, the City of Scotts Valley’s Shop Local, Win Local holiday campaign, the Light Up the Night! kickoff to the holiday season presented by the Exchange Club in early December and the Scotts Valley Community Theatre Guild’s Alfred Hitchcock Festival in early March, just to name a few.
We also help expand your reach through all Santa Cruz County Chambers, Monterey County Chambers and the Silicon Valley Chamber Coalition, partnering with about 20 regional Chambers to share best practices and present a unified voice on state legislation affecting local businesses.
A special thank you goes out to our Chamber Ambassadors. Their dedicated work behind the scenes makes all our events and programs possible. If you are looking for an energetic and welcoming group to join, our ambassadors would love to have you.

Victor Alejandro President, Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce

Hiram Scott, after whom Scotts Valley was named, led an extraordinary life. As the oldest son of a Maine sea captain, he sailed to California and made his first fortune on a lucky gold strike in the Sierra foothills, but he became even more wealthy from his partnership at the Mossdale Ferry site getting Miners and supplies across the mighty San Joaquin River to the gold country. He was making between $700,00 to $1100.00 per day. In 1850 he acquired Rancho San Augustin, which later became known as Scotts Valley. Hiram Scott built the Greek revival style Scott House in 1853. Situated in front of City Hall, it is a Santa Cruz County Historical Trust Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are available by request.
Scotts Valley is Celebrating its 60th Anniversary! Scotts Valley became a city in 1966 spearheaded by Agnes Lewis at a time when there were concerns about the City of Santa Cruz turning Sky Park Airport (site of the currently proposed Scotts Valley Town Center) into a Cemetery. The City of Santa Cruz had annexed Sky Park in 1964. Sky Park Airport started operating in 1947. It was closed in 1983, two years after Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, crashed his Beechcraft Bonanza at Sky Park, injuring his three passengers. Sky Park also became the first sanctioned Drag Strip in Northern California from 1948 until 1951.
Tree Circus, Lost World and Santa’s Village: Tree Circus was created by Axel Erlandson, who moved his remarkable trees from the Central Valley to Scotts Valley Drive in 1946.

Trees with trunks shaped like a heart, water tower, zigzag, needle and thread, castle, totem pole and telephone booth were all on display. He was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not 12 times and once in Life Magazine. When he retired, he sold the property to the Thompson family, and they updated the park with giant Dinosaurs to bring in more tourists. In 1977 the property was sold for commercial development. In 1985 twenty-five of the trees were moved to Bonfante Gardens (now Gilroy Gardens) in Gilroy. The Lost World, constructed in 1959 on a 40-acre property adjacent to the Tree Circus featured life-size replicas of dinosaurs with steel frames and fiberglass skins cavorting on the landscape.
Santa’s Village was built in 1957. Santa’s Village was a favorite of kids and was famous for Santa’s house, his sleigh, and Alaskan reindeer. The first Santa, Carl Hansen, was known as “Hocus Pocus”. He went on to star in his own TV show. Hocus Pocus Park was named in his honor in 1995.
The Famous “Barn”: during the 1960’s, well known bands, including Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin performed at the Barn. The Barn ceased being a nightclub in 1968 and became a dinner theater in an RV park in the 70’s. It was torn down in 1991. The location is now Baymonte Christian School.
Movie director Alfred Hitchcock purchased a 200-acre estate on Canham Way in Scotts Valley in 1940, with the help of his friend Joan Fontaine. Her parents were realtors in Los Gatos where she grew up. The property with Monterey Bay views, was a second home and weekend retreat. He wanted to have his own vineyards, which had been there since the 1800’s. The property is known as “Heart of the Mountain” and now serves as a winery. Additionally, Dick Smothers of the Smothers Brothers attended San Jose State University and called Scotts Valley home through the 70’s and 80’s.
Business Birthplace of Seagate Technologies, Netflix & Erik’s DeliCafe: Seagate Technology was founded in 1978 by Al Shugart and produced the first 5.25-inch Floppy Disk. Entering it into the boom of 1980's technology. It continues to be a leader in mass storage today. Netflix: On a hot summer day in 1997, Marc (Randolf) and Reed (Hastings) walked into Logos Books & Records in Santa Cruz, bought a CD of Patsy Cline's greatest hits, and mailed it to Reed's house a few blocks across town. When the CD arrived intact, they knew they had found their ticket to e-commerce glory. Netflix was founded in Scotts Valley 1997 and their website went live on April 14, 1998, with 900 DVD titles. Marc ordered the movie "Casino" as a test, it worked. Within 15 minutes the website crashed with so many orders and by the end of their first day. They had 137 orders. Erik's DeliCafe was started as a small delicatessen in Scotts Valley by Erik Johnson in September 1973, Erik purchased the location for $429. The award-winning restaurant is known for their "Sandwiches with Character". There are now 29 locations across the state. Erik visits his original store every week.

On a brisk winter morning, coffee in hand, walking through Kings Village Shopping Center, I’m doing one of my favorite parts of the job: saying hello, checking in on businesses, connecting.
Six months into my role as Executive Director of the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce, moments like this remind me why I love it. I pop into Cali Style to ask about the sale I spotted on Instagram and see if we can share it on our Chamber socials. This is my sons’ go to shop for Santa Cruz clothing, a new skateboard or scooter repair, and the Chamber’s social accounts can help advertise just how cool and helpful they are.
A few steps later, I’m thanking Omar at House of Bagels for the delicious bagels and coffee we enjoyed at our recent Board of Directors meeting. Highly recommend their bagel sandwiches. Then it’s hello to Nattawut and Siriporn, who are reopening Thai Heart after dealing with and healing from an emergency surgery. Nattawut is getting stronger every day, and we’re all relieved. I’m so proud of how much money this community raised to help them stay afloat while they heal. We consider ourselves lucky to be their neighbors, and giant fans of their pumpkin curry!
Little moments like these add up: smiles, kindness, and familiar faces. Scotts Valley really is a sweet city, and our business community is very special. Back at my Chamber office, my mind shifts to today’s varied to do list. Finalizing plans for a networking event for members, writing a newspaper column for the Scotts Valley Times about a new member. Holding an Art, Wine and Beer planning committee meeting, and a quick email to Mayor Lind for help with an issue one of our members has. After I finish writing this piece, Andrea and I will review member listings. More than 15,000 copies of the directory are distributed throughout SV and SLV, everywhere you can imagine. It is a beloved Chamber benefit and an incredible advertising tool for any business looking to be seen, supported, and connected.
This is what a healthy and successful chamber of commerce looks like: businesses supporting one another, real relationships, shared momentum. When local businesses grow, our local economy grows, and the entire community benefits. Supporting the Chamber truly means supporting your business and your city at the same time. We are always working on new ways to uplift and spotlight our members, but it all starts with connection. We’d love to chat with you about all the ways being a member of the Scotts Valley Chamber gives back to you, your business, and our community. Andrea and I genuinely enjoy helping our businesses thrive.
OK, back to that to-do list!
Thank you so much for the warm welcome. If we haven’t met, let’s change that ... Kelly Gavin, Executive Director, Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce Annual Events

Make Scotts Valley your basecamp as you explore the 14 California State Parks in Santa Cruz County. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park preserves a 40-acre old-growth redwood grove named after the 19th-century industrialist, Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, and camping on more than 4,650 acres of forested and open land. We often separate the beach from the mountains, but the Santa Cruz Sandhills are proof that the two were once one. It is mind-boggling to think this area used to be the bottom of the ocean, but ten million years ago this was the case as evidenced by shark teeth and sand dollars scientists have found here. Feel free to impress your kids with that fun fact.
An array of outdoor options at the city’s largest park, Skypark that boasts four tennis courts, 2 Basketball courts, Bocce Ball Court, an enormous playground, BBQ pits, shaded picnic tables, and a gazebo, paved walking and bike trail lined with California native plants. Next to the park is the Tim Brauch Memorial Skatepark, a 22,000 square foot concrete playground, Bike enthusiasts can enjoy the Bike Pump Track and a Dog Park that includes a devoted area for both large and small dogs. Lodato Park is a short 1.5-mile hike loop, which is easily marked, and dogs are allowed on leashes.

Supporting the local businesses in Scotts Valley is our number one priority at the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce.
We believe that by shopping your local shops you are supporting a neighbor, a friend and contributing to the overall wellbeing and economic success of Scotts Valley!

Boulder Creek is one of the oldest communities in the San Lorenzo Valley, rooted in the towering redwood forests that once fueled California’s early growth. Originally home to Indigenous peoples who lived along the San Lorenzo River, the area later became a center for logging, milling, and transportation during the mid-1800s redwood boom. Sawmills, stagecoach routes, and rail lines shaped the town’s early economy and laid the foundation for the closeknit downtown that still exists today.
As logging declined, Boulder Creek evolved into a resilient mountain community known for its independent businesses, civic pride, and deep connection to the surrounding natural landscape. Historic buildings, community traditions, and a strong volunteer spirit continue to define the town, linking past and present. Today, Boulder Creek honors its history while embracing the future—remaining a place where local character, community involvement, and the redwoods themselves are central to everyday life.

Boulder Creek is one of the oldest communities in the San Lorenzo Valley, rooted in the towering redwood forests that shaped California’s early growth. Once a hub for logging, milling, and transportation during the 19thcentury redwood boom, the town retains a distinctive historic downtown framed by natural beauty and a strong sense of place.
Today, Boulder Creek is known for its independent businesses, welcoming atmosphere, and close connection to the surrounding redwoods. Historic buildings, community traditions, and a walkable downtown continue to attract visitors seeking an authentic small-town mountain experience.
Established in 1965, the Boulder Creek Business Association (BCBA) supports and advocates for local merchants while reinvesting member resources into community events and civic improvements that strengthen downtown Boulder Creek, enhance quality of life, and preserve the town’s unique character. As a volunteer-led nonprofit representing more than 100 local businesses, the BCBA plays a central role in maintaining a vibrant and visitorfriendly town center.
The BCBA produces signature events that draw visitors throughout the year, including the legendary Fourth of July Parade, safe Halloween Trick or Treating, the Holiday Tree Lighting, Spring and Fall Town Clean Ups, and our Annual Auction and Dinner fundraiser that supports community projects. These events celebrate Boulder Creek’s heritage while creating opportunities for residents and visitors to connect.
In addition, the BCBA leads ongoing civic improvements that enhance the visitor experience, including the town lights that frame our historic downtown buildings, the holiday tree, and continued tree maintenance throughout the downtown corridor. These efforts contribute to a welcoming, pedestrian-oriented environment that encourages strolling, shopping, dining, and gathering.
Through partnerships with local, county, state, and federal agencies, the BCBA also advocates for pedestrian safety and infrastructure improvements that support accessibility, sustainability, and long-term vitality for both residents and visitors.
Why Visit Boulder Creek
Nestled among towering redwoods in the heart of the San Lorenzo Valley, Boulder Creek offers an authentic mountain-town experience just minutes from the coast. Visitors are drawn to its walkable historic downtown, locally owned shops and restaurants, and strong sense of community. Boulder Creek is a gateway to outdoor adventure, with easy access to hiking, biking, climbing, and nearby redwood parks, including Castle Rock State Park and Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Seasonal events, from the legendary Fourth of July Parade to holiday celebrations and town clean-ups, invite visitors to experience the town like a local.
Whether you’re stopping in for a day trip, attending a community event, or planning a weekend retreat, Boulder Creek offers a relaxed pace, local flavor, and a welcoming atmosphere rooted in history, nature, and community pride.
Get Involved with the Boulder Creek Business Association
The Boulder Creek Business Association (BCBA) welcomes both businesses and individual community members who want to support a vibrant, thriving downtown. Business Members benefit from promotion, networking, advocacy, and opportunities to collaborate on events and projects that attract visitors and strengthen the local economy. Community Members play a vital role by supporting local businesses, volunteering at events, and helping fund civic improvements that enhance quality of life in Boulder Creek. Memberships directly support beloved community events, downtown improvements, and the preservation of Boulder Creek’s unique small-town character. Learn more or join today at bcba.net.

The BCBA helps unite local businesses for purposes of advertising, promotion and economic growth by providing resources for opportunities and platforms for collaboration. We host periodic mixers at local shops where businesses and the community can mingle. During the 2020 shelter in place order, we created a Facebook page called Shop and Dine Boulder Creek where all local businesses can connect with their customers, and advertise free of charge. This page will continue as a free advertising platform for local businesses.
We also have a community calendar on our website for member businesses to advertise and community members to find what’s happening in town. With these and other methods, we make every effort to connect our local businesses with the community and visitors. We also protect our businesses by working closely with our local and county officials, sharing concerns and questions that pertain to our community. Member-ships and sponsorships help to fund these promotional activities and our ongoing projects to improve the downtown experience.

The first five years of a child’s life are critical to their health and success. We provide FREE (California State Preschool Program) early education, from the redwood mountains in the San Lorenzo Valley to the vibrant fields of Watsonville. We serve infants through TK with the guidance of highly experienced, bilingual/bicultural staff who understand the importance of play and social emotional learning as the key foundation for academic success and ignite a love of lifelong learning. Our centers maintain low teacher-to-child ratios of 1:8 for preschoolers and 1:4 for toddlers. Together we’re better.
