BRUSH YOUR TEETH OR YOU WILL HAVE A HEART ATTACK!

um disease also known as periodontal disease, is very common and affects over half of all Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control. It is one of the most common infections; more prevalent than the common cold. Common symptoms of gum disease might include bleeding gums and bad breath. I have found in my many years of practice that pain or discomfort are rarely present in people who have gum disease. If left untreated, this chronic infection might lead to By G. Sroujieh, systemic diseases, such as DDS, AFAAID heart attacks and strokes. With detection and early treatment periodontal conditions are treatable and tooth loss can be kept to a minimum. WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS:

Periodontal Disease is any disease that affects the periodontium. Periodontium is the tissues that surround and support the teeth including the gums, the bone of the tooth socket and the periodontal ligament; a thin layer of soft tissue that connects the tooth to the socket. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gingivitis which is the mildest form of gum disease, It causes the gum to become red, swollen and bleed easily. Gingivitis, if allowed to progress, can advance to periodontitis. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic

inflammatory response causing the tissue and bone that support the teeth to break down. Gums separate from the teeth forming pockets that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more supporting tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth become loose and will need to be removed. SYMPTOMS: Periodontitis has a lot of symptoms. Some of them are: bleeding gums which is a sign of inflammation and a major marker of periodontal disease, red and swollen gums, gum recession, loose teeth, migrating teeth, bad breath and unpleasant taste. RELATION TO HEART ATTACK: Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque buildup in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels), which may contribute to the swelling of the arteries leading to the restriction or blockage of the blood flow. Another possibility is that the oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream attaching to fatty plaques in these arteries and contributing to clot formation. Coronary artery disease is characterized by the thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the buildup

of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly, which may lead to heart attacks. One research shows that almost immediately after exposing the human blood platelets to the

bacteria of the dental plaque, the platelets begin to clump together. Additionally, research from the University of North Carolina finds a link between gum disease and acute heart attacks. Other findings suggest that the presence of gum disease might increase the risk of second heart attacks in people with a risk of heart disease. Researchers have found that people who have periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary heart disease, as those who have healthy gums. And one study found that the presence of common problems in the mouth, including gum disease , cavities, and missing teeth, were as good at predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels. Additional studies have shown a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. People diagnosed with cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to other people. PERIODONTAL THERAPY: There are some things you can do to prevent periodontal disease such as brushing at least twice a day, flossing every day, stop smoking and visit the dentist once every six months. These are just preventive measures because once periodontal disease develops, more intensive treatments are needed. Periodontal therapy can be conservative or surgical. Conservative treatment consists of root planning and scaling (deep cleaning) accompanied with good oral hygiene. The purpose of deep cleaning is to remove hard deposits and infection from beneath the gum and clean the root surfaces. Deposits of bacterial plaque, calculus, food debris and pus that are present in the infected pockets are removed using special instruments. Periodontal surgery is used to modify and reshape the supporting bone around the teeth and is used when periodontal disease is advanced in nature. The bone is then modified and the excess gum tissue is trimmed away. CONCLUSION: Along with a good diet, weight control, abstaining from using tobacco products, exercise, blood lipid control, a good oral hygiene and a visit to your dentist to treat any existing periodontal disease is another simple, but very important thing you can do to help prevent heart disease, stroke and maybe several other diseases.

editor’s note

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise

O

K, the “early to bed and early to rise” part of Ben Franklin’s quote may be debatable, but who among us doesn’t wish for health, wealth and wisdom?

In Scottsdale, the trinity often go hand in hand, and our annual Health & Wellness issue reflects the Airpark’s continuing rise as a powerhouse hub in the care community. Not only are we home to a major block of the nationally recognized “Cure Corridor,” a vigorous flow of related companies are delivering jobs and further renown to our area. The intertwining health-food and fitness sectors are also booming here. A few examples in this issue alone: Healthiest You offers a telehealth solution for employers; North Valley Surgery Center debuts as the state’s largest outpatient facility; Accolade announces plans to hire 300 “health-assistant” positions; True Juice launches with home-delivered fresh juices; two of the six Airpark companies on Inc. 500’s fast-growth list (The Joint and Plexus Worldwide) have health connections. As you flip through our pages, please take a moment to note the upcoming fundraisers for Camelot Therapeutic Hospitals and Feeding Matters. Both of these very worthy nonprofits in our community are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and others in need. To your health!

Airpark companies in state dominate Inc. 500’s fast-growth list

A 660-unit condominium development and 234-room hotel is slated to be built next to Kierland Commons, following the Phoenix City Council’s approval last month of Optima Real Estate’s plan to build three 12-story condo buildings and a 10-story hotel on a parcel previously home to a Robb Stucky furniture store, reports Phoenix Business Journal. If it can’t attract a hotel, Optima could also end up putting 796 residential units on the parcel. The council unanimously approved the developer’s rezoning applications. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway hub to grow

The employment hub around PhoenixMesa Gateway Airport is expected to grow, thanks to a Scottsdale-based developer’s plan for new industrial space near the headquarters for Able Engineering, reports AZCentral.com. The airport’s board of directors last month approved a contract to lease out 8 acres south of the passenger terminal. Scottsdale’s Cavan Commercial, developer of Kierland Executive Center in Scottsdale and Camelback Corporate Center in Phoenix, plans a multitenant

industrial building of about 120,000 square feet. The ground lease will give the airport about $82,000 in annual income, although the rate can be adjusted based on various factors. The airport board also approved a lease agreement with flight-training company CAE Oxford.

On Nov. 1,

the Scottsdale Airport will transform from bustling economic hub to the hottest place to party in Arizona as local businesses and members of the community come together for the third annual Weekend Jetaway Culinary Casino Classic, benefiting Elevate Phoenix. Currently, Elevate Phoenix is helping to mentor and guide 4,500 local at-risk students at a cost of just $222 per student. Through this event, the founders hope to help the organization double the amount of aid provided to local kids and teens over the next several years. Hosted by PGA star and Airpark resident Tom Lehman, the party promises high-flying entertainment, eye-popping food and drink from the Valley’s top chefs, live and silent auctions and—of course—the chance to win your own private jet vacation for four! This trip can be taken any time the winner chooses. Tickets start at $100/person and are on sale now at WeekendJetaway.org. An event concept born and bred in the heart of the Airpark, here are just a few of the local businesses making it all happen behind the scenes. Scottsdale Airpark News is a sponsor and enthusiastic supporter of this event.

1. AXA Advisors Southwest

A 2014 Most Admired Company in Arizona honoree, AXA first dreamt up the idea of a private jet hangar party as a way for its growing office to give back time and money. Team members from AXA make up most of the event committee, and the firm even closes its office doors so everyone can help with set-up prior.

2. DJ Solomon

Mathew Scott, better known at DJ Solomon and a fixture of the Scottsdale party scene from The W Hotel to The Mint for years, will serve as the event’s resident DJ from an elevated platform high above the dance floor.

3. Aero Jet Services

Eager to bring the Airpark’s biggest party of the year into their own backyard, the private-jet charter and management group will host the event in one of its expansive hangars on the east side of the Scottsdale Airport runway. Mike and Marilyn Aaby founded Aero Jet Services in 1997.

4. Danny Nelson of Nelson Financial Group

Business partners with AXA for decades, Nelson jumped at the chance to support the event as both a sponsor and to help with major event donations, including the grand prize jet and trip, thanks to his relationship with Airpark-based Jet Set magazine.

5. Circus School of Arizona

The premier aerial-arts and ground-acrobatics instruction in Arizona—whose teaching facility is right off the Greenway-Hayden Loop—will serve as special entertainers during the event, with performers high in the sky and contortionists shape-shifting down below.

6. Clique Photo Booth

An alumnus of Horizon High School just a few blocks from the Scottsdale Airport, Clique co-founder Shayna Labadie is taking part in the event for the third year in a row, courtesy of her unique photo booth that projects pictures onto the walls of the event and provides guests with a personalized yet branded keepsake photograph to take home.

Like Clique, the Four Seasons has been an event supporter since day one, offering up small bites from its own Proof or Talavera as well as acting as event sponsors and auction donors. This year, chefs Jesse Hansen and Mel Mecinas have even more tricks up their sleeves for hungry guests.

8. Hangar 5 Productions

New to Weekend Jetaway but not the Airpark, which the company has called home since 1994, this industry leader of highdefinition aerial cinematography will be taking a few lucky guests on their own private helicopter tours via its first-ever donation to the auction.

9. Lehman Design Group

For Weekend Jetaway host Tom Lehman and Chris Brands of the Lehman Design Group, creating golf courses is all about passion. Partners for more than 10 years, Lehman and Brands are proud to bring their out-ofthe-box, detail-oriented approach to the Weekend Jetaway team.

ot even a year ago, Polly Morris said the real challenge in giving her new business wings was overcoming the misconception that home healthcare couldn’t be a luxury service. It’s safe to say word is out about Hyde Park Home Healthcare Professionals, a true labor of love for Morris. Last month, she and business partner Lisa Sniegocki practically collapsed in their chairs for a quick lunch, between interviewing staff candidates and attending personally to clients’ needs. At least one of their cellphones—which go everywhere with them (including the shower)—trilled every two to five minutes, and dutifully the women put their forks aside to answer each call. Since inception, Hyde Park has set out to change the standard of in-home care, raising the bar with elite, highly trained staff who cater to client needs, ranging from concierge services to aid by certified nursing assistants. Whereas most Valley home-health companies dip into a general registry of CNAs to find temporary employees, Hyde Park works closely with a handpicked team and provides customized training. They then match their PCAs— short for “Personal Care Attendants”—with the individual. If a PCA doesn’t happen to be available, clients, to their shock, will find either Morris or Sniegocki standing on their doorstep, ready for duty. For instance, over the summer, an assistant took ill in the middle of a nightshift, and Sniegocki threw on a bathrobe and buzzed over to provide relief within 15 minutes. “It would be easy for us to do it like …continues on page 22

…continued from page 21 everyone else and just pick up the phone and tell someone to go to this house or that one,” Sniegocki says, then shrugs. “But I don’t want to do it that way. It would be sweet, but no joy.” Hyde Park’s velvet-glove service costs

$28 per hour, which is $3 to $5 more than the standard “non-luxury” fee charged by competitors. The partners don’t want to price themselves out of the market or deny their brand of dignified care to those who need it.

After spending most of the wee hours with a client who called in when all her PCAs were booked, Morris looked weary but exultant as she sipped a coffee. “We now have a waiting list of two weeks, but we hope by October we can eliminate that,” she says. “We have 30 caregivers now— we’re five times as big, but I’ve learned I’ve got to be constantly hiring and training.” These days, Hyde Park’s growth challenge is a positive Catch 22. Because Sniegocki and Morris have such high standards, they turn down 95 out of 100 applicants vying for a position with their company, which pays double the industry norm. Most hopefuls fail the alcohol testing or criminal background checks, despite being gainfully employed by other care providers. “We’ve been in facilities where we’ve run into [caregivers] that we turned down, and I think, oh my God, I wouldn’t trust this person with my dog,” says Morris, whose vetting process includes punctuality, manners and demeanor. A single client with round-the-clock needs equates to five PCAs in a 24-hour period, so hiring has become a herculean …continues on page 25

…continued from page 22 focus in recent months, with caregivers then undergoing a rigorous training regimen. Morris is proud of the program, which includes culinary classes at Kierland Commons’ Sur le Table as well as instruction from Ritz-Carlton managers on the brand’s “five-star gold-standard service.” “We are their servants as well as their caregivers,” Morris says of the company’s relationship to clientele. “And we get to know the whole family—we spend lots of time with families.” In fact, Sniegocki and Morris’ goal is to create a family-like bond within the Hyde Park staff that extends to clients and their loved ones. Regardless whether a client needs a PCA only once a week, that person or family members are welcome to call Hyde Park at any time for guidance or support. As Sniegocki likes to say, “We are yours. All of us are there for you.”

Caring Concierge

So what kind of service can a client expect if signed on for the Hyde Park Home Healthcare Professionals treatment? For starters … PCAs will drive you to the doctor’s office, and even act as your “patient advocate” in the examination room at your request. They’ll go with you

Hyde Park business partners Polly Morris (left) and Lisa Sniegocki (second from right) with Personal Care Attendants Rachel Jamora and Theo Aviso

on hospital visits and stay in your room overnight, fetch blood-test results or medicines, cook your favorite dishes, play cards with you, clean house, perform pedicures, style your hair, administer a therapeutic massage, arrange medical transport and take you shopping. They’ll stop by periodically to make sure you’re OK, and if a family member suspects you’re feeling down, they’ll make a special trip to cheer you up.

As a specific example, Morris relates a recent experience with “Linda,” an elderly Hyde Park client who lives in a Carefree estate. When Linda was still in a wheelchair, one of her main pleasures was receiving friends on her balcony, where she often reveled on her own in the spectacular view. After a serious fall, she became bedridden, and now requires 24/7 assistance. Determined to enrich her client’s life after the accident, Morris flew into action, ordering French doors installed in the bedroom for an open feel, and organizing parties so guests would continue to visit. While homebound, Linda often reminisced about summering on Coronado Island in California, and Hyde Park arranged for caregivers to drive her in a gurney to her favorite hotel on the island, where she was accommodated with a suite and balcony overlooking the ocean. The PCA looked after her the entire time. “She enjoyed seeing a different view!” Morris says. “I say, 'never say no.' We do not say, 'no.' I tell our people, if a client says, ‘I want a helicopter in my living room at 2 in the morning,’ you say, ‘OK, let me call the office and make arrangements.’” …continues on page 26

Coming Soon! Medical Supplies of Scottsdale delivering only the best, 24/7 The gals behind Hyde Park Home Health Professionals have a new venture in the pipeline: Medical Supplies of Scottsdale, the Valley’s first 24-hour, medical-supply store, slated to open in the center on the northwest corner of Tatum and Shea boulevards as early as December. While caring for their homehealthcare clients, Hyde Park partners Polly Morris and Lisa Sniegocki were dismayed to discover there was no roundthe-clock outlet in the Greater Phoenix area to buy supplies such as wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen, mattress pads and incontinence products—all of which are often needed after hours. Rather than carrying a plethora of makes, Medical Supplies of Scottsdale will stock “only the best” brand of each item, Morris says. “We have done the research for the customers. We’re also contracting with some great new companies that are bringing cutting-edge things to the market.” The store will feature a retail space where people can drop in to shop or find out about home care. Though store hours are not yet confirmed, customers will be able to call for Valleywide delivery 24/7.

Danger of Denial

Call it human nature, but denial flows strongly among the silver-haired population that they may someday—probably sooner than they imagine—need assistance at home. Sniegocki and Morris urge concerned families, spouses and individuals to make plans before the time comes. “By the time we are 70 years old, 87 percent of us will have a life-changing episode where we are going to need help in our home. That’s just the fact, and that number goes up every day,” says Sniegocki. “Smart people are thinking ahead and building a relationship with companies like Hyde Park, so if something happens, they aren’t making calls at 2 in the morning trying to find home healthcare.” To encourage prospective clients to preplan, the ladies of Hyde Park give freely of their time to answer questions, meeting with out-of-state adult children visiting parents locally, consulting with wary home-alone seniors, etc. One older gentleman, who is not

yet a paying client, worries his mild dementia may worsen to the point he can’t care for his ailing partner. He calls daily to reassure Sniegocki he’s still holding it together; the day he misses that call, he’s asked Hyde Park to step in—and they’re ready. North Phoenix resident Lynn Rich found Hyde Park only a few days before her husband, Jack, took a horrifying fall in the home bathroom. By pure coincidence, she’d just read a profile in the January 2014 issue of Scottsdale Airpark News about Morris’ budding business and had instructed their daughter, who lives in the Valley, to call Hyde Park in case they ever needed that kind of care. Jack wound up in Mayo Clinic for almost 10 days, and when he came home he needed constant care for months. Lynn called Hyde Park, who sent a cadre of caregivers with expertise matching Jack’s changing needs as he healed in stages. Today Jack moves gingerly around the house with a walker, and Hyde Park sends a PCA to stay with him once a week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a “respite” visit, giving Lynn a chance to run errands and have a break. “And believe me, it is a respite,” Lynn says, aiming a smile at Jack. “And a respite for him, too. He has new faces and someone to visit with for a while, and sometimes the boss herself shows up at the door, which is always a big surprise.” The people that Hyde Park have sent to her home during these difficult months have made the experience easier because, Lynn says, they feel like family. “They are all exceptional, every one … I haven’t for-

gotten a single one of them. I think I can go right down the list.”

Kismet and Rewards

Hyde Park may have been born from Morris’ long-held passion to transform geriatric care, but she met her professional soul mate in Sniegocki. The timing was kismet. The day after Hyde Park’s phones had begun to ring off the hook, and Morris realized she wouldn’t be able to handle the workload herself, she met her feisty blonde counterpart. Sniegocki had run her own home-health franchise while in Pennsylvania, embracing the calling after helping to care for her sick father for many years. When she moved to the Scottsdale Airpark two years ago, she worked for another local franchise but switched to independent care because she wasn’t happy with the company’s approach. “And then I ran into Polly Morris … and her mission and goals with Hyde Park it resonated with me so much,” Sniegocki says. “Not only is she my best friend, my sister and my business partner, but our philosophies are the same. To see that relief on patients’ faces—it’s so rewarding.” 

He grasps one of her legs, bends it at the knee and presses and rotates the lower leg until it forms a 90-degree angle. Then, as she keeps that knee bent, he takes her other leg in his hands and, with the leg fully extended, presses it toward her face. They hold this pretzel-like position for several seconds as she breathes rhythmically, then he increases the pressure. On the next mat, a man stands behind a woman seated in the lotus position. He bends his knees, pressing down on her shoulders while he gently grasps her head in his hands and pulls upward, stretching and rotating her neck. More rhythmic breathing. More stretching. …continued from page 27 way to the Scottsdale Airpark. That’s thanks to Chau Lam, a massage therapist from New York who founded Thai Royal Massage soon after arriving in Arizona in 2010. “When I moved here, I recognized that Arizona didn’t have Thai massage,” Lam says, “and that’s when I realized I could start a business to provide it.” The first location was in the Mekong Plaza in Mesa, a marketplace featuring Asian food, products and services. It was a natural fit for Lam’s massage services, which include traditional Thai massage, foot massage and head-to-toe reflexology. The business grew quickly after its January 2011 opening, thanks largely to word-ofmouth recommendations from customers who came from all over the Valley. “We had a lot of repeat business because of our customer service,” Lam says. Social media also helped, with positive reviews on Yelp and other sites. “Our goal was to open another location six months to a year later, and we opened …continues on page 30

…continued from page 28 in Old Town Scottsdale in 2012. The North Scottsdale location was going to open in 2013, but there were delays with the lease and construction, and we opened the end of May this year,” says Lam. “We chose the Airpark area because it is a great fit with our business model, which is to provide high-quality Thai massage to our customers. Also, this location cut down the travel time for our existing customers who live in the area.” With his latest location, Lam also expanded services to include facials (for face and back), waxing and other skin care. He renamed the Airpark business Thai Royal Massage Spa to reflect the added spa options. The customers and therapists work on thick mats in a single large room, with curtains partially separating the mats. Couples and groups of families and friends often book sessions together. Appointments run from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the service. To celebrate the grand opening of the Airpark location, customers there will receive 20 percent off any services through the end of the year. Lam began with eight employees.

Today he has about 40. The practitioners are experienced massage therapists who take additional training in traditional Thai techniques. “When we first opened, it was kind of hard to find the practitioners who did Thai massage,” Lam says. “Now they have heard of us, and I have people calling me to ask about positions here.”

The Thai Difference

Traditional Thai massage incorporates Hatha Yoga, acupressure and reflexology. The practitioner uses his or her entire body—arms, elbows, knees, even feet—to move the client into a variety of positions, using firm, rhythmic pressure and stretching to improve flexibility. It’s like yoga, only someone else does the moving for you. And like yoga, the positions can be intimidating for the initiate. “When people first see it, some of them get scared,” Lam says, “but after they get it done, they love it. The staff knows how far they can go with the pressure. The technique promotes healing of mind, body and soul, Lam adds. “Before

Lam plans to open his fourth location, in Chandler Gateway, before Christmas. That location also will offer spa services. “Our goal is to open a new location each year,” Lam says. “We’re looking to grow all over the Valley.” 

uests at the North Valley Surgery Center ’s grand opening in September should have been issued maps along with their canapés to navigate the vast facility glistening with state-of-the-art equipment. The new center at 8901 E. Raintree Drive contains seven operating rooms four gastro-intestinal procedure rooms, and a pain-management procedure room within 34,000 square feet, making it the largest surgery center in the state of Arizona. It’s expected that nearly 70 physicians, 80-120 anesthesiologists and affiliated health professionals will provide care at the facility, which began seeing patients Sept. 15. An estimated 60 to 75 full-time employees will eventually work at the new center. “The expansive new North Valley Surgery Center is an integral part of Scottsdale’s Cure Corridor sector from Shea Boulevard to the Scottsdale Airpark,”

says Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane. “Our local residents will benefit first, as this asset protects health—the most important foundation for quality of life.” Scottsdale Healthcare, an affiliate of Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network, partnered with Sovereign Healthcare and the physicians at North Valley Surgery Center in 2010. The center is managed by Sovereign.

Why Ambulatory Centers?

The center reflects a trend in medical care moving beyond hospital walls, says Scottsdale Lincon Health Network CEO Tom Sadvary, explaining that consumers, employers and insurers want value and access closer to home. “Acute care still plays an important role in what [hospitals] do, but ambulatory centers like this help optimize outpatient and hospital facilities ... We believe that collaboratively working with our physicians is the best way to expand beyond hospital-centric care.”

About Scottsdale’s

Cure Corridor

The Cure Corridor is not only a location but a concept designed to promote the innovative activities occurring around the concentration of the bio-life sciences sector from Shea Boulevard to the heart of the Scottsdale Airpark. The bio-life sciences sector is a major driver of the innovation economy in the state of Arizona, Greater Phoenix and city of Scottsdale. According to the Flinn Foundation, the biosciences in Arizona “develop treatments for health afflictions, design diagnostics to gauge and prevent illness, strengthen our food supply, develop alternative fuel sources and much more.” t

Sovereign Healthcare CEO Jeremy Hogue maintains the facility will offer some of the most advanced technology available in the outpatient-surgery setting. “For patients seeing specialists in orthopedics, gastroenterology, ENT, pain management, GYN surgery, urology and many others, this center raises the bar as the premier facility for outpatient surgical care,” he says. North Valley Surgery Center was planned with the future of healthcare in mind and can do more than almost any other center in the West, Hogue adds. With a core group of about 70 physicians on its medical staff, this center is expected to perform nearly 12,000 procedures per year. “This is a forward-thinking center in terms of all of the planning that has gone in to prepare for the next phase of outpatient surgery and health reform,” says Jordan Weiner, M.D, an ENT physician who has served as chairman of the center’s governing board. “At the end of the day, it still comes down to the doctor-patient relationship and ensuring that nothing compromises our commitment to the very best outcomes for our patients.” Byxbee Development Partners served

“T

his is not a politically correct gym!” The commentary floats from inside the small Fit Ops therapy room, where two clients toss spicy banter as their prone bodies are stretched and pivoted into flexibility. The speaker is Joe Porter, who’s just become aware that the Scottsdale Airpark News writer in the foyer can overhear every word. A 1968 PGA Tour player who scored even bigger in Scottsdale as a commercial real estate agent, Porter changes tack, abandoning tales of his Arnie Palmer comeuppances for a livelier prey: the burly man gripping one of his thighs and demanding resistance pushback. “Fit Oops!” Porter hollers, ribbing Fit Ops owner Carson Kemp. But “Awesome Carson,” as he’s known at

the hybrid gym and training facility, is a former Army Ranger with more than 200 special-ops missions to his credit. He’s not only immune to locker-room-style goading, he revels in the stuff. It’s all part of the Fit Ops experience—where jokes buoy the serious work of clients driving and striving to meet their body goals. This isn’t the kind of one-size-fits-all gym where legions of gladiators pound treadmills and grunt over weight circuits. Between his missions in Afghanistan, leading soldiers in physical training and “just being clumsy,” Carson managed to break 30 bones over the years, and the combined experience left him with a heightened insight into how people should move. “It helped me be able to adapt to any kind of situation—whether you have a

bum knee or you’re a 25-year-old perfect athlete or a pro golfer,” he says. “If your goal is stay relatively pain-free and move well, that’s kind of my gig.” Porter and his current “banter buddy,” retired attorney John Simon, are among those clients dealing with injury. A disease destroyed Porter’s nerves’ ability to talk to the muscles, causing his knees to hyperextend so he needs a walker to get around. “I was supposed to have been in a wheelchair years ago,” Porter says. “Carson keeps me loose enough that I can keep going and keep fighting.” Simon’s body is crisscrossed with scars from 22 surgeries, including one to transplant skin over the missing chunk in his right calf after he “danced with a drunk driver.” Simon has been coming to Fit Ops for five years, preferring the customized and always varied program to the “cookie-cutter” routine of insurancepaid physical therapy. “The thing that makes this place different is, mentally, they make you feel better,” Simon says. “When I come in here, my pain will be an 8 or 9, and when I leave it will be a 7 or 6. Just to take the pain down a notch and give me a couple hours in a day to run errands—

it’s huge.” Fit Ops’ emphasis on flexibility and stretching make it the “piece between physical therapy and the gym” for clients grappling with injuries, Carson explains. “It’s easy when a top athlete comes in here,” he adds. “But when someone has [serious issues], you’ve got to be creative, and you’ve got to know what you’re doing.” Golfers, whose game lives or dies on flexibility, also seek out Carson’s unique brand of training. Clients have included professional football players, triathletes and many professional trainers from other gyms. Fit Ops’ dynamic stretching “is powerful and essential—for a golfer or anyone really,” says Mike Petty, president of Scottsdale’s Communication Links, a golf-marketing company. “I’m sure there are other programs that help with flexibility but none that I’ve seen that work like theirs.” You never know who you’ll see at the intimate gym, which is tucked in a nondescript commercial strip east of Scottsdale Airport. Classes are held all day on the hour. One trainer may be leading eight members through partner workouts; a lone, young woman may

be balancing on quivering pink ovals designed to strengthen core strength; a silver-haired man may be focused on rolling a ball beneath each foot to limber the delicate tendons. Newcomers to Fit Ops begin with a hands-on evaluation from a staff member. “Then we put you where you need to be,” Carson says. Most clients start

out with personal training sessions two to three times a week. Some are ready to drop into the hourly group workouts right away, others need to learn to move better first. The guiding light in any one program, though, is the individual’s goals. Whatever that goal may be, Carson’s pledge is to get the person there, while

always limiting the risk of injury. “He knows how to push me farther than I believe I can go,” says Petty. “And he does it without ever being condescending or overbearing. He has a great knack for being ‘military’ Carson and ‘teddy bear’ Carson at the same time.” The man himself admits he’s been known to pick on people’s weaknesses, but that’s exactly how they improve. The most important component, he says, is attitude. “If you come in here, and you have no ego and let me teach you something new or even something you think you know, you can achieve pretty much anything— if you train your butt off.” 

Hello There

But are clients actually picking up their phones and using the service? According to Prendergast, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, the company’s model appears to be exceeding typical tele-health utilization statistics by more than tenfold. In August, the company released statistics showing 39 percent engagement from members utilizing Healthiest You within its health plan. And that is a game changer, says the company. “Healthiest You is not only changing the way patients receive care, but they’re also changing the way benefit plans are designed,” says Maurice M. DeRegis, national sales manager for Paragon Partners, a Scottsdale-based insurancebrokerage firm. “By rethinking the way plans are built and putting Healthiest You as the top-level, front-line of care, humanresources managers are able to offer more

benefits at significant cost savings to their companies and employees. According to Healthiest You survey data, nearly one-third of members received a callback from a doctor in less than two minutes, and the average callback time is 11 minutes. Patients are on the phone with a doctor in less time than it would take for most members to drive to a doctor’s office. “Member usage is really what sets us apart,” Prendergast says. “In a recent Heathiest You member survey, 93 percent of patients reported that a health issue was resolved with Healthiest You, and the service earned a 97 percent satisfaction rate, compared with a national average rate of 68 percent satisfaction reported for traditional doctor’s office visits.” 

rizona gets its share of national headlines airing the dirty laundry of scandals, scoundrels and silly things that plague our state and city. So how about some good news for a change … particularly national news media coverage about our historically great people, good ideas and stellar events that all take place in Scottsdale’s spectacular natural setting.

Consider just a few of Scottsdale’s historic national good news headlines: • During the time that Thomas Marshall was vice president of the United States (under President Woodrow Wilson, 1913-1921), he and his wife, Lois, had a winter home on Indian School Road, right across from Lois’ parents, the Kimseys. Enamored by the desert and the Scottsdale area, he moved his family here the following year and continued to write short stories for American Boy, American Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Country Gentleman, as well as Arizona Highways and The Arizona Republic. His novels, short stories and travel articles glamorized Western lifestyle, scenery and spirit of adventure, and Kelland developed a fan following, particularly among men and young boys. • Former First lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited the Arizona Craftsmen Center on Main Street in Scottsdale in 1946 and 1947. She was impressed with the variety of artists and craftspeople working at the center—Lloyd Kiva, Wes Segner, Sandy Sanderson, Mathilde Shaefer Davis and Lew Davis, to name a few. She wrote about them in her nationally syndicated newspaper column, “My Day,” giving a boost to Scottsdale’s reputation as an arts …continues on page 42

Student stars to shine at Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship’s 5th Annual Starry Knights Tickets now on sale for annual fundraising event

C

amelot Therapeutic Horsemanship will host its annual fundraiser, Starry Knights, on Saturday, Oct. 25, and will once again shine the spotlight squarely on its extraordinary students. “Our theme for this year’s Starry Knights is ‘Reach for the Stars,’ which is something our students do every day,” said Camelot’s Executive Director Mary Hadsall. “At this year’s event, we are excited to feature two students’ stories, one child and one adult, who beautifully represent the breadth of the community we serve.”

Claudia Rank

Among the students featured will be 10-year-old Grayhawk Elementary student Claudia Rank. Claudia was born with cerebral palsy and has been riding horses since

she was 2 years old. Her goal is to someday become a teacher and work with children who have visual impairments.

Richard Vietor

Richard, one of Camelot’s adult students, broke his neck in a diving accident in 2000. While doctors initially believed he would never walk again, Richard has worked hard to regain his mobility and independence. He has discovered that horseback riding increases his ability to stand up straight, which improves his gait and flexibility. Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship is a nonprofit organization that teaches horsemanship to children and adults who have physical disabilities. Camelot has been offering all services at no cost to students for 31 years and is located in North Scottsdale.

Camelot will use funds raised through Starry Knights to continue to offer their horsemanship program to children and adults with disabilities free of charge.  For more information and to purchase tickets, visit CamelotAZ.org

Scottsdale welcomes baseball’s Rafters and Scorpions

T

hroughout October and November, Salt River Fields and Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale will be home to the Salt River Rafters and Scottsdale Scorpions, respectively, two of six Arizona Fall League (AFL) teams comprised of many of Major League Baseball’s elite young prospects—some of whom hail from right here in the Valley. “The Arizona Fall League is regarded throughout professional baseball as the finishing school for top prospects,” explains league director Steve Cobb. “It features top prospects from every organization in Major League Baseball.” The AFL’s role in baseball’s development process goes deeper than players, too. The league has helped future major league managers, coaches, umpires and front-office administrators and executives reach the big leagues. For instance, this past July, 36 ex-AFL players and four umpires were selected to participate in MLB’s All-Star Game plus 10 former players in the Futures Game and six of 10 participants in the Home Run Derby. Fans certainly are not forgotten, either. “We also are proud to offer an affordable alternative for fans and families to enjoy

professional baseball played at the highest level by an assortment of minor-league allstars and first-round draft choices who are headed to the major leagues,” says Cobb. In fact, approximately 60 percent of players selected for the Fall League reach the major leagues. Since its inception, the AFL is responsible for helping develop 212 MLB All-Stars, four Cy Young Award winners and three World Series MVPs The Arizona Fall League remains among the most affordable outdoor activities in Scottsdale this fall. “Both day and night games are only $8 for adults and $6 for children or seniors — and you can sit wherever you like. Season passes are similarly wallet-friendly at just $85 for adults and $75 for children or seniors,” says Cobb, noting that all 30 MLB teams are represented on the AFL’s six teams with at least seven players. The Rafters will be stocked with prospects from the hometown Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins. The Scorpions, who boasted current MLB stars Bryce Harper and Mike Trout on the 2011 roster and Dustin Pedroia, a former ASU star, a few years earlier, will include prospects from the New

The Rafters and Scorpions play each of the four other teams whose rosters are filled by players from the other 20 MLB organizations. True Juice delivers fresh juices and smoothies to your doorstep daily By Kimberly Hundley

new Airpark company is coldpressing raw fruits and vegetables, bottling the juices onsite daily and offering door-to-door delivery for homes and businesses. True Juice is all about fresh and healthy dietary options. To ensure the products pack the maximum amount of living enzymes and micronutrients, they are prepared at temperatures below 118 degrees—and they have a shelf life of only three days. Along with a line of green juices— which the proprietors say they’ve formulated to be the tastiest on the market—the company has developed a selection of protein smoothies that can be combined

for a complete, nourishing cleanse. Two of True Juice’s co-founders come from the corporate world, including Arthur Estavillo, whose background includes sales and operations for Xerox and Google. “When you look at today’s society, most of the foods we are consuming are processed, which tends to make your body more acidic and in turn, more prone to disease,” he says. “Green juice is alkaline by nature, and it helps your body get back to the pH-neutral zone. Obviously, you feel better, are more regular and have more energy.” True Juice production manager Martin Osete, who lost almost 80 pounds by …continues on page 50

True Juice, he says, is unpasteurized and contains a minimum of fiber so the body can absorb the nutrients directly without taxing the digestive system. Also, the smoothies feature pea protein, the most digestible protein in the plant world. The cost to deliver is $10, with most orders averaging $50 to $60 for six green juices and smoothies, says Estavillo. “We deliver fresh before 8 in the morning. We will leave your order on your doorstep in an ice bag, ready to take to work for a healthy lunch. One green drink and a smoothie will replace a meal.”

The delivery fee is waived for businesses and schools that partner with True Juice for regular distribution. An 8-ounce, kid-friendly bottle is on the drawing board for a November release (regular servings are 16 ounces), and True Juice will be reaching out to private and charter schools. Already, the company has exhibited at health fairs for Quicken Loans, ATS and other Airpark businesses interested in encouraging wellness among their workforce. “We’ll give a corporate discount to any company that asks us to come in. We’ll help them develop a wellness program and deliver True Juice to their employees at lunchtime,” Estavillo says. “If they want, we’ll put a fridge in their office and

drop off daily orders.” The True Juice manufacturing-and-distribution site on 91st Street off Bell Road includes a small storefront where customers are welcome to stop in and buy the products directly. True Juice is also developing a full line of vegan soups, which will soon be available for distribution to local restaurants and possibly individual homes. The flavors are black bean, white northern bean and red lentil. The soups now appear on a rotating menu at Picazzo’s Organic Kitchen at The Promenade shopping center on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Scottsdale Road. 

Tourism industry can be a vibrant career path for young people

I

By Rachel Sacco, President & CEO, Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau

n Scottsdale, one in every eight jobs is directly related to tourism. With a strong hospitality focus in our city, the industry’s presence and economic impact in our community make tourism an advantageous career path for the young workforce. Joe Iturri started his career in hospitality as a banquet server at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. He went on to study hotel management at the University of NevadaLas Vegas. Now general manager at the Saguaro Scottsdale and a board member

for the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, Joe says working in the tourism industry is a passion for him. While Joe says tourism is “in his blood,” there are many other reasons why the industry should stay top of mind for young, career-minded adults: 1. Travel industry jobs are growing. According to new research released by the Arizona Office of Tourism, direct travelgenerated employment reached 163,500 in 2013, which is up 1.4 percent yearover-year. In Maricopa and Pinal counties,

the travel industry employed 94,300 jobs with $3.7 billion in employment earnings. Nationally, the travel industry has created jobs at a pace nearly 16 percent faster than the rest of the economy since 2010 (as of October 2012), according to the U.S. Travel Association. 2. The tourism industry is vital to economic growth in Scottsdale, in Arizona and throughout the United States. Maricopa and Pinal counties welcomed 17.6 million domestic visitors who spent $12.6 billion and were responsible for $996 million in …continues on page 56

Local Arizona businesses, like school systems and biomedical companies, are already benefiting from gigabit speeds from Cox Business. Introducing gigabit speeds to residential customers is a natural next step

Gigabit speeds will soon be heading to Cox Arizona customers.

state and local tax revenue. According to the U.S. Travel Association, 2012 total travel spending generated $2 trillion and supported 14.6 million American jobs. 3. Hospitality means job diversity. When it comes to career paths within tourism, the opportunities are endless. At hotels, jobs range from restaurant servers to spa directors to general managers. In addition, travel agents, tour operators, concierges, golf pros and fitness instructors also are excellent career options within the industry. In fact, 2000 Olympic Games gold medal swimmer Misty Hyman works at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa as a fitness instructor. Or why not explore jobs in destination marketing organizations, such as the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau or Arizona Office of Tourism? Marketers communicators, sales managers, and administrators work to promote the destination and bring visitor dollars to the community. 4. Tourism jobs are rewarding. Not only does working in hospitality help you see and experience your community with the same appreciation as a visitor, it also can provide a stable income. According to Salary.com, the annual income of a hotel general manager in Scottsdale can reach more than $150,000. If you are more interested in being the executive chef at one of the city’s world-class restaurants, the median annual salary is over $64,000. Other positions such as marketing director or sales manager often reach six-figure salaries. The city’s economy is firmly linked to the tourism industry. In 2012, Scottsdale welcomed an estimated 8.9 million visitors who generated $35 million in tax revenue. As Scottsdale tourism continues to grow, strong hospitality candidates are in demand. Those ‘Horrible,’ Wonderful, Fixed Index Annuities By Thomas K. Brueckner, Strategic Asset Conservation

L

ast month, I told you about an ongoing trend in financial services; that of the denigration of annuities as a product line by brokerage firms in competition with the product. One notable firm actually runs national ads with the slogan “Why I Hate Annuities.” Our firm has done decades of due diligence on every product and strategy that we offer our older clientele. I personally own many of the solutions that we recommend to our clients and have done as well as they have in such products, including four of my own Fixed Index Annuities (FIAs). They

are but one tool in our toolbox, they solve a specific need very effectively, and they have steadily become the most popular product/ strategy we offer, growing to more than $240 million of FIA dollars now on our books. Last month, I recounted receiving an email from one of our FIA clients, an avid market-watcher/investor, a retired engineer, and a Ph.D. who spent many months doing his “homework” on our recommendations before becoming a client nearly seven years ago. David was writing to tell me that he had just calculated the internal rate of return on his FIAs and was surprised

to discover that it was 9.1 percent annually thus far. Considering that the 85-year history of the S&P 500 is 8.3 percent, David’s yield is truly remarkable. Most of our longstanding FIA clients are averaging between 6 percent to 8 percent annually, with most netting around 6.8 percent. These folks are getting 82 percent of the upside with none of the down, to which one equally elated client said, “Show me a marriage like that!” Last week, another client named Tim attended a class we teach on preparing for a successful retirement. Tim just retired early from a top management position at a

financialfundamentals local defense contractor and had met with the representatives of the investment firm that handles that employer’s 401(k). After class, I asked Tim to share with the other attendees what he had just told me days earlier: During his meeting with the brokerage firm’s reps, he told them he would be rolling the remainder of his sizable 401(k) into an index annuity he had purchased several years earlier through our firm, one that paid a 10 percent bonus on additional funds, and to which we had added an income rider guaranteeing an 8 percent annual increase of his income account for up to 10 years or until he decides to begin receiving payments, if sooner. To Tim’s amazement, these two representatives not only denigrated the strategy (even though their firm sells more expensive products that also offer it), they questioned Tim’s judgment, the insurance company’s financial strength and even my integrity as his advisor! (These men have never met me.) Tim had never seen such a biased, unprofessional display; clearly, these men were in defense mode lest word

got out that a competitor from a parallel industry may have better to offer. Consumers of financial products should ask themselves a basic question. Of the 309 million people living in the United States, more than 119 million benefit in some way from annuities or pension funds, their functional equivalent. These annuities are offered through major insurance companies, an industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people, and is heavily regulated by the states that employ additional thousands to do so. Q: How plausible is it that all of these people are selling, servicing, or regulating “bad,” harmful products—and thriving in business while doing so? Isn’t the routine fleecing of one’s clients an unsustainable business model? In 2010, six Ph.D.s at the Wharton School of Business conducted a two-year study of Fixed Index Annuities, comparing them to four other asset classes over the prior 14 years. In an interview after the study concluded, the lead author, Dr. David Babbel, stated that the FIA’s “performed quite well … indeed they domi-

nated the alternatives,” and that “some have performed better … than [bonds], equity-funds, [and] money markets in any combination.” As John Adams famously said, “Facts are stubborn things; whatever may be our wishes or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” Last year, there were 44 companies offering 258 different index annuity products nationally. This year there are 48 such firms offering 289 different products, continuing the trend first begun in 1995. Among them are the very brokerage firms who were the loudest in maligning them just a few years ago.  Thomas K. Brueckner, CLTC, is president/CEO of Strategic Asset Conservation in Scottsdale, a conservative wealth-management firm with clients in 18 states and six countries. He is a 2011 Advisor of the Year national finalist, a radio talk-show host, and a mentor to other advisors nationally. He may be reached for comment at go2knight.com.

How does Accolade’s health-assistant position differ from a typical call center job? We realized that if we wanted to make a difference in the lives of families, we would need to have a different kind of professional—someone who has great listening skills and is a natural at building relationships as well as is a good critical thinker who is able to solve problems. new profession called the Accolade Health Assistant. Our health assistants are assigned to specific clients and their families and are supported with a team of clinicians and other specialists they bring in to help with care-related needs. As a team, they work together to link benefits information with care options with a person’s feelings and values to help our clients get the right information and the right care at the right time. And, they do all the legwork, whether it’s finding and scheduling an appointment with a doctor, handling a medicalclaim appeal, preparing questions to ask at the next doctor’s visit, discussing the pros and cons of different treatments or even finding community or financial programs to supplement their benefits. The health assistant becomes a trusted person in our clients’ lives. This is a completely different type of role than what is performed at a call center, where service representatives are measured on call times and similar transaction-oriented metrics.

Why did your company open the support center in Scottsdale and, more specifically, the Scottsdale Airpark? The business climate here is tremendous, particularly for companies in the health and technology industries. Both the state and the city of Scottsdale have worked hard to make this a great place to live and work, and we wanted to be in a location that is attractive for both professional growth and personal quality of life. We also saw that there was a rich pool of talent here, and this was particularly important given our plans for growth. Do any of your principals live in Scottsdale? Umair Khan, our director of clinical operations in Scottsdale, relocated from Pennsylvania in 2013. He is one of more than 20 employees who relocated to Scottsdale to ensure that our culture, our operations and everything that makes Accolade such a special place to work is no different here than in our Plymouth Meeting [Penn.] office. Some of this original group of Accolade “transplants” signed up for a temporary assignment. Others have decided to make Scottsdale their permanent home.  To learn more about career opportunities at Accolade, visit www.accolade.com/careers.

ave you ever thought about whether you’re a good listener? Take a moment to think about how well you listen to the people you work with and care about. When you listen to others, are you distracted? Are you formulating your response, waiting for your turn to talk, or determining what’s next? Are you multitasking or looking down at your smartphone? Do you interrupt? the conversation back to you and away from the other person? Or are you making eye contact, taking in the person’s body language and truly engaging with what they are saying? Are you eliminating distractions, giving the person your full, undivided attention? Are you mindful of the person’s body language, tone of voice, pace, inflection and words that they are using? When you become a better listener, it’s a game changer. That’s because when you take the time to really listen intently to others, it dramatically improves your personal and professional relationships. Think about it this way: Every person has a universal longing to be known, heard and truly understood. Unfortunately, this type of listening experience is rare today. Joseph Pine, author of The Experience Economy, said, “The experience of being understood, versus interpreted, is so compelling you can charge admission.” Have you ever had a listening experience where you hear every word, but you miss the message altogether? It’s an easy thing to do. Sometimes we are so fixated on our own thoughts, perceptions and viewpoints that we aren’t listening to understand, build rapport or make a stronger connection with someone. Individuals want to feel important. The people you surround yourself with in your life want to be included. They want to know that their ideas, concerns and suggestions mean something. They want to be valuable and valued. Good communicators know this. They solicit feedback and input from others. They also recognize that some people do not have the courage to speak up. They make a point to ask these individuals for their insights because they know that communication is about making a two-way connection.

We Specialize In: Admit, Jot & Paraphrase

When someone is speaking to you, it’s important to stop doing all other things. If you aren’t able to remove distractions at that moment, reschedule the conversation. If you find that your mind has wandered, admit it. If your mind has wandered, stop the speaker, jot down one or two words regarding your wandering thoughts and know you’ll go back to those topics after your conversation. Paraphrasing what you heard the speaker say is also an important part of listening. Repeat back the message that you heard from the speaker when it’s your turn to speak. This includes giving back the words, as well as the meaning and feelings in the message. And consider that these are some of the most powerful words you can say to whomever you’re listening to: “Tell me more” and, “Then what happened?” You know you’ve made a connection with someone when you experience a genuine sense of trust and respect and engage comfortably—no matter how different that person may be from you. At U & Improved, we say that everyone has two ears and one mouth for a reason. It’s because one of the most crucial parts of communication is the ability to listen. When you listen for understanding, you gain the opportunity to make greater connections with the people you work with and care about.  Jodi Low is president and founder of U & Improved, a Scottsdale-based leadership training organization that provides personal and professional development programs through heartbased leadership and powerful, performancebased trainings. brokerage, not as a real estate broker running a business. And my focus is on our customers’ success—not my own.” Chaplik began Joseph Bernard Investment Real Estate in 2005 in Portland, Ore. The company has grown revenue every year since and increased clients and market share dramatically. Two years ago, seeking to expand the company further and find a home for his family in a less rain-soaked environment, Chaplik, his wife and two sons moved to Scottsdale. The company’s headquarters moved with him. Today, Joseph Bernard Investment Real Estate has 11 employees in three states. Chaplik’s outlook for his company is ambitious. “I have a plan that calls for us to be in 35 markets in seven years and to become a national brokerage firm,” he says. “That’s five new markets a year for seven years, starting in 2015. We were ranked among the 100 fastest-growing private businesses in Oregon the past three years. We’re looking to match that growth here in Arizona.” Chaplik got into real estate after a successful career in the telecom industry. He credits that experience with giving him a solid grounding on how to manage and grow a business. “I started as a long-distance salesman for Sprint,” he says. “I ran up the company’s management ladder pretty quickly in their business division. After a ton of training and really good management mentoring, I left the company and went to Allegiance Telecom in Los Angeles. I helped rebuild their national accounts division and was asked to launch their Portland office as a vice president. Allegiance was acquired by XO Communications, and they kept me on, so I had experience with three large, successful companies.” After he moved to Portland, Chaplik started buying apartments buildings. “I didn’t find high-quality professionalism and service in the apartment brokerage community that I was accustomed to in corporate America,” he says. Seeing this void in the marketplace, Chaplik decided to walk away from his telecom career and take a high dive into a full-time career in real estate. He started in a small firm, brokering apartment buildings. Six months into it, he was confident he’d learned what needed in the apartment market to start his own venture. “Our company exists to provide out-

Joseph Bernard calls itself a “boutique” brokerage. “In the apartment market, there are big companies that broker everything—office, leasing, retail and multifamily,” Chaplik says. “Those companies have a mixture of products. We broker solely apartment buildings.” For the most part, Chaplik’s customers are not buying the large, top-tier apartment complexes in the costliest areas. “Those are mostly owned by the institutional side of the market with little returns,” he says. “Our customers are individual owners who are buying in the next level of buildings and neighborhoods for a larger return and increased overall wealth.” Real estate is an industry notorious for its ups and downs, and Phoenix was one

of the hardest-hit markets for real estate in the recent recession. Despite that history, Chaplik is optimistic about his company’s prospects for growth. “A few years back, you could say it was a horrible time to be in real estate in Phoenix,” he says. “But that was on the selling side. On the buying side, three or four years ago may have been the best time to be buying property.” Joseph Bernard’s focus on helping clients sets it apart from other apartment brokerages—and fuels growth in both up and down markets, according to Chaplik. “We make the market by helping the individual clients of all sizes make the right decisions on buying and selling. They’re the ones who own them, and they make all the decisions. Our clients’ needs and goals—not our own—are at the forefront of every transaction. We are helping them build success with high returns for their massive wealth gains.” Chaplik’s commitment to service

extends to helping his community succeed. He serves on an advisory posse memorial fund for the families of fallen law-enforcement officers in the state. Chaplik is on the board of trustees for Ronald McDonald House Charities. He also fits in time as a Little League baseball and soccer coach and Tiger Den leader for Boy Scouts of America. 

Choosing Healthcare Strategy that Pays

Traditional Thai Massage

The wisdom of investing in proactive, primary-care models By Dr. Susan Wilder, LifeScape Premier

T

he employee healthcare burden puts American companies at a global disadvantage. American health care consumes nearly 18 percent of our GDP, crowding out every other spending priority, yet delivers a poor return on that investment. We fall behind other developed nations in life expectancy along with virtually every key health metric and dimension of a high-performance health system. Despite our massive expenditure, we suffer more years disabled by chronic disease. Our system excels at rescue but fails miserably at proactively optimizing health and productivity of our citizens. Increased healthcare demand, fueled by aging boomers and millions gaining insurance through the Affordable Care Act, threatens to further inflate costs and reduce quality-care access. The physician shortage in Arizona is predicted to be among the worst in the country. Insurers and medical centers fill the gap with lower-cost physician extenders (PAs and NPs with a fraction of a physician’s training) or by promoting “fast-food” kiosk medicine in drug stores. Primary care is the base of our healthcare pyramid, and quality primary care improves health outcomes while reducing cost. However, if our physicians continue to be undervalued, forced into hit-and-run medicine throwing drugs at symptoms, costs will further inflate while our collective health will plummet. Proactive companies are changing the paradigm. Rather than spending liberally on ever-increasing premiums and wellness programs, they are investing in retainer-

based, personalized primary care for their employees. This is paid for directly rather than through an insurance middleman. The cost is offset by less expensive, highdeductible insurance for “rescue” care. Investing in proactive, preventive primary care pays off with a healthier workforce, lower absenteeism and reduced overall healthcare costs, which should favorably impact premiums. Patients desiring personalized care or with complex care needs should invest now in the myriad direct primary care models including concierge- or retainer-based care. Insurance plans and Accountable Care Organizations would be wise to invest in retainer-based models for their most costly and complex cases. Engaging proactive health care is our only hope of shifting the cost/quality curve. As Winston Churchill said, “Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.” He also said, “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing, after they’ve tried everything else.”  Susan Wilder, M.D., is the founder and chief executive officer of LifeScape Medical Associates and LifeScape Premier, 8757 E. Bell Road. Following her military service, Dr. Wilder served as founding director of the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Family Medicine residency program. She has gained special expertise in personalized, functional medicine with a focus on primary prevention and addressing underlying causes of illness while reducing reliance on medications. For information on Lifescape’s concierge-care program, call 480-860-5269, ext. 120; visit www.LifeScapePremier.com.

Lexis Prep School Open House: Oct. 22 Cholla campus focuses on children who learn differently

L

exis Preparatory School is a private, K-8 school for kids who have AHDH, anxiety, dyslexia and other learning challenges. Last month, Lexis moved to the Scottsdale Unified School District’s Cholla campus. With this new location, the vision of the school’s new owners can come to fruition, with expanded instructional opportunities and therapy services as well as a number of exciting new programs open to the public. An Open House has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 11130 E. Cholla St. for parents who want to learn more. The school’s new owners—developmental pediatrician Raun Melmed, and speechlanguage pathologist Anita Werner—have developed the school so that children who need to learn differently can celebrate their strengths and recognize that every challenge can provide an opportunity for growth. The highly trained faculty and staff work

collaboratively with students, parents and professionals to create a nurturing but challenging learning environment. Through individualized, multisensory instruction, students develop critical thinking skills and acquire the tools and strategies needed to become successful and independent learners. The “new” Lexis Preparatory has been designed as a village or community, with a number of programs open to the public: The Lexis Social Village: Imagine a place where a child can hang out with like-minded kids. Choose from a variety of drop-in clubs such as art, chess, Legos, running and basketball. Lexis has plans to continually expand these offerings, with book clubs, drama, cup stacking, yoyo (featuring World Champion Tyler Severance) and more. A special session is also planned with Scott Flansburg, better known as “The Human Calculator.” The Lexis Social Village is designed to be a fun place where the child’s multiple intel-

ligences are valued. The Lexis Tutoring Café Located in a high-energy, retro-style space specifically designed to make tutoring a “cool” and positive experience, the Tutoring Café brings together a team of highly dedicated and trained professionals who specialize in math, science, foreign languages, English, history, study skills and test prep (SATs, PSATs, ACTs, etc.). Lexis tailors each learning tutor to the child’s individual needs and keeps in close contact with parents throughout the process. Lexis aims to embed executive-function skills in the context of its tutoring so that each child learns to manage time and attention, switch focus, plan and organize, remember details and integrate past experience with present action. The goal is to break down learning into small “doable” pieces.  More: 480-391-3901

uality dental care and patient service are just two of the points of pride at 1st Scottsdale Dental, where Dr. Ghassan Sroujieh, DDS, and Dr. Marjan Nejad, DMD, provide full dental services for a wide range of patients, utilizing state-of-the technology, digital X-rays and intraoral cameras. “Dr. Najad provides all the cosmetic and the general dentistry, and I do all the dental surgeries and implants,” Sroujieh said, explaining his scope of work includes fixed bridges as well as removable dentures over implants. “The fixed would be the bridge, which is screwed in over an implant and not removable. You just brush and clean it. The removable implant is just like dentures, but there is the implant in the mouth,” he said, noting the attachment to the implant keeps it secure so it does not move while in the mouth. Dentures are also available through 1st Scottsdale Dental, but whenever possible,

implants are recommended for the comfort and convenience they provide. “Patients are able to eat much better with implants. When someone eats with regular dentures, the dentures move— there is the adhesive they have to deal with, and they might swallow it. And then there is the issue that then cannot eat everything. They have to watch what they eat with dentures,” said Sroujieh, adding that with either fixed or removable implants, patients experience greater comfort. “Sometimes if someone has bad teeth and we can’t save them, we will remove all the teeth at the same appointment, put in the implants and affix the bridge all at the same time,” Sroujieh said. Everything is mapped out on a computer beforehand and then we just transfer all that work to the mouth,” General dentistry services include routine cleaning and digital X-rays, fillings,

crowns, root canals, extractions, partials, treatment for periodontal disease and cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dental procedures include veneers, Lumineers, bonding, in-office teeth whitening, take-home teeth-whitening kits and Invisalign. Most of the practice’s patients come from referrals. “We treat our patients here like family,” said Sroujieh, who is an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. 1st Scottsdale Dental is at 10301 N. Hayden Road, Suite 110, south of Shea Boulevard. Most PPO dental plans are accepted. OCTOBER Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.

ARIES 3/21-4/20 It would be wise to attend to all financial affairs during the first days of October. Most of the month is unfavorable for applying for a loan or committing to a long-term $$ agreement. Continue to be conservative in business matters until next month. Focus more on networking and contacting potential clients or groups. October is about who you meet and who you know. TAURUS 4/21-5/21 You may encounter delays or setbacks. Double check documents or orders. World events and developments are apt to change unexpectedly. Use this three-week period to catch up and eliminate counter-productive methods. Get everything in writing, and don’t misplace receipts. Travel plans can be canceled. Your most productive week begins on the 27th. GEMINI 5/22-6/21 The focus is more on how you maintain, rather than how your daily routine maintains you. Your ability to adjust to the unpredictable serves you well, and communication and time management will be key. October brings good news; interacting with others can be more harmonious after the 10th. A new project may begin with the New Moon on the 23rd. CANCER 6/22-7/22 An important eclipse on the 8th will affect your business/career. Are you ready to make some visual changes or take on a new look? Market yourself in a new way, and you can sail through a confusing period (5th-26th). Once Mars moves into your work area by the 27th, expect more traffic (opportunities), and you can move forward with confidence. LEO 7/23-8/23 Work areas may be interfered with, but don’t let that stop you. Delays or cancelations, including social events, require you to compromise. Think twice before committing to time-related agreements, as this period brings delays and misunderstandings. Luckily, you seem to benefit, because

86 | Scottsdale Airpark News October 2014

waiting things out is to your advantage. Nothing really goes wrong when Jupiter is in your sign, where it will remain until July 2015.

“yes!” commitments. Mars in your own sign until the 26th gives you the motivation and follow-through to get things done.

VIRGO 8/24-9/23 Get out your files and records! This is a good time to get organized and take a more conservative approach to financial planning for the next two months. Revisit your budget and be aware that missed appointments could prove costly. Still, some of October’s frustrations can be rewarding on a social/business level. Circle the week of the 27th as busy and productive on many levels.

CAPRICORN 12/22-1/20 The eclipse and full moon on the 8th is challenging and may bring changes to your workplace. Your verbal skills will come in handy and so will your determination to power through restrictions. Everything may seem to be put on hold or not clarified until the last week. Changes in your professional world require you to come up with new approaches. Last month’s accomplishments make up for these interruptions, so don’t worry.

LIBRA 9/24-10/23 October is always one of your more personal months, where your diplomatic and social charms aid you in professional efforts. Put your best look forward, as presentation and image is important. October is action-packed and may have you making important decisions. Career/work is highlighted with the eclipse on the 8th and later with the New Moon on the 23rd. There just may be a careeraltering change within the months and year ahead.

AQUARIUS 1/21-2/19 Are you thinking of taking a course, learning a new job or even switching careers? These upcoming weeks starting around the 5th are the appropriate time to make inquiries. By the end of this year, you will have the info and tools needed to make a practical choice for the year ahead. Don’t ignore the many invites to attend workrelated events with fellow associates. A bit of networking can be rewarding.

SCORPIO 10/24-11/22 In about one more month, you can move ahead with confidence. That determination and staywith-it attitude pay off. Restrictions have been a learning process. October is busy and, in spite of a few steps backward, you are now seasoned to gain control. Travel or training plans may be somewhat on hold. The final week can be most successful and productive; while you are fueled by the sun in your sign, put your new plan into nonstop action.

PISCES 2/20-3/19 Listen carefully to what others have to offer or promise you early in the month. Take nothing for granted, allow yourself options and plenty of time to get were you have to go. Mix-ups and miscommunication seem to be the order of the next three weeks. Check your cell, car and calendar to avoid costly mistakes. On a positive note, you get inventive with money. Use this month to research options. You can think and talk about it, but nothing happens until you take action (the 23rd). 

SAGITTARIUS 11/23-12/21 Wait no longer, and don’t hesitate to reach out to clients and prospects the first three weeks of the month. October’s patterns allow you to address and resolve past issues. Get ready to accept responsibility. Don’t expect immediate responses from others until the last week. Avoid excessive spending or those impulsive
