BRUSH YOUR TEETH OR YOU WILL HAVE A HEART ATTACK!

um disease also known as periodontal disease, is very common and affects over half of all Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control. It is one of the most common infections; more prevalent than the common cold. Common symptoms of gum disease might include bleeding gums and bad breath. I have found in my many years of practice that pain or discomfort are rarely present in people who have gum disease. If left untreated, this chronic infection might lead to By G. Sroujieh, systemic diseases, such as DDS, AFAAID heart attacks and strokes. With detection and early treatment periodontal conditions are treatable and tooth loss can be kept to a minimum. WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS:

Periodontal Disease is any disease that affects the periodontium. Periodontium is the tissues that surround and support the teeth including the gums, the bone of the tooth socket and the periodontal ligament; a thin layer of soft tissue that connects the tooth to the socket. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gingivitis which is the mildest form of gum disease, It causes the gum to become red, swollen and bleed easily. Gingivitis, if allowed to progress, can advance to periodontitis. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic

inflammatory response causing the tissue and bone that support the teeth to break down. Gums separate from the teeth forming pockets that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more supporting tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth become loose and will need to be removed. SYMPTOMS: Periodontitis has a lot of symptoms. Some of them are: bleeding gums which is a sign of inflammation and a major marker of periodontal disease, red and swollen gums, gum recession, loose teeth, migrating teeth, bad breath and unpleasant taste. RELATION TO HEART ATTACK: Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque buildup in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels), which may contribute to the swelling of the arteries leading to the restriction or blockage of the blood flow. Another possibility is that the oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream attaching to fatty plaques in these arteries and contributing to clot formation. Coronary artery disease is characterized by the thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the buildup

of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly, which may lead to heart attacks. One research shows that almost immediately after exposing the human blood platelets to the

bacteria of the dental plaque, the platelets begin to clump together. Additionally, research from the University of North Carolina finds a link between gum disease and acute heart attacks. Other findings suggest that the presence of gum disease might increase the risk of second heart attacks in people with a risk of heart disease. Researchers have found that people who have periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary heart disease, as those who have healthy gums. And one study found that the presence of common problems in the mouth, including gum disease , cavities, and missing teeth, were as good at predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels. Additional studies have shown a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. People diagnosed with cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to other people. PERIODONTAL THERAPY: There are some things you can do to prevent periodontal disease such as brushing at least twice a day, flossing every day, stop smoking and visit the dentist once every six months. These are just preventive measures because once periodontal disease develops, more intensive treatments are needed. Periodontal therapy can be conservative or surgical. Conservative treatment consists of root planning and scaling (deep cleaning) accompanied with good oral hygiene. The purpose of deep cleaning is to remove hard deposits and infection from beneath the gum and clean the root surfaces. Deposits of bacterial plaque, calculus, food debris and pus that are present in the infected pockets are removed using special instruments. Periodontal surgery is used to modify and reshape the supporting bone around the teeth and is used when periodontal disease is advanced in nature. The bone is then modified and the excess gum tissue is trimmed away. CONCLUSION: Along with a good diet, weight control, abstaining from using tobacco products, exercise, blood lipid control, a good oral hygiene and a visit to your dentist to treat any existing periodontal disease is another simple, but very important thing you can do to help prevent heart disease, stroke and maybe several other diseases.

Selfie-Conscious

T

he “selfie” craze is spurring demand for cosmetic procedures, according to a recent study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Apparently a lot of us weren’t looking too closely in the mirror before it became obligatory to post our pics on social media and spice up texts with in-the-moment self-portraits. And since the Internet will be the first place a lot of folks “meet” each other these days, you can’t blame a gal or guy for trying to make a strong virtual first impression. Clearly, the business of beauty is still looking enviably good. Perhaps nowhere else in Arizona are residents more aware of their body and face than in Scottsdale, which is excellent news for the many professionals here dedicated to fitness and aesthetics. In this issue, we’re delighted to introduce you to three unique Airpark ventures dedicated to helping clients look and feel their best in very different ways. Like all professionals, however, these entrepreneurs share a desire to successfully market and grow their businesses, and to find that balance between passion and profitability. Meet the fine folks behind Circus School of Arizona, Derivations Skincare, and the Lymphatic Healing Center.

n response to growing concerns about concussions and head injuries in youth sports, Arizona Pop Warner Football and Cheer and Mayo Clinic are collaborating on intensive medical research about the effects of sport-related injuries. As part of the program, all participants ages 10 years and older in Arizona Pop Warner’s flag and tackle football programs, as well as all participants in the organization’s cheerleading programs, will be required to complete a comprehensive evaluation prior to play that will provide a baseline for future testing in the event of an injury. This baseline evaluation will provide immediate data when testing young athletes after an injury, helping physicians determine the nature and extent of the injury and to assess a timeline for return to competition. David Dodick, M.D., a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic Arizona campus at 5777 E. Mayo Boulevard, is an expert in concussion care and director of the Mayo Clinic Concussion Program. He was invited to join President Barack Obama and other medical experts at the White House Summit in late May. The effort between Arizona Pop Warner Football & Cheer and Mayo Clinic is one of the first of its kind since President Obama’s call-to-action on May 29 at the White House, assembling prominent athletic organizations, athletes and medical experts to join the Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit. The two organizations have worked to get the concussion protocol executed before the start of the 2014 season. The 2014 season of Arizona Pop Warner Football and Cheer began practice on Aug 1. The required baseline-testing compo-

nent of the program provided by Mayo Clinic is posted online, with all Arizona Pop Warner Football and Cheer participants required to complete the online test before being allowed to play. As of press time, the guidelines were as followed: If a participant has a suspected concussion during a game or practice, a sideline concussion tool will be used to identify whether a concussion has occurred. In the event of a concussion, current Arizona Pop Warner policies state that a player must receive a medical evaluation and approval to return before being allowed to play. In this program, all injured athletes may be eligible for rapid assessment following a concussion by a concussion specialist at Mayo Clinic. With the baseline test data already on file, specialists at Mayo Clinic will be able to readily gauge the extent of current or recent injuries and make a determination as to whether and when an athlete will be allowed to return to play. Athletes will go through a detailed return-to-play protocol to ensure that each is safe to compete. Moreover, the data received will allow Mayo Clinic researchers to analyze injuries to identify factors that identify those at risk of repeated concussion and factors which predict a complete recovery. “This is truly groundbreaking,” says Paul Watkins, commissioner of Arizona Pop Warner Football and Cheer. “Mayo Clinic is respected around the world for the quality of their patient care and research, and everyone at Arizona Pop Warner Football and Cheer, from players to parents to coaches, are incredibly grateful to have this resource for keeping our kids safe now and in the future.” 

t’s Sunday afternoon at Circus School of Arizona, and four students are tackling the “Silky Beast.” The apparatus hangs 24 feet in the air, combining a Lyra hoop, trapeze bar and long swaths of colorful silk draped to the floor. The women “climb” the silk, wrapping it around their legs and feet and pulling themselves high into the air where they pirouette and do splits and flips in unison, all with toes pointed, arms outstretched with balletic grace and—despite a few grunts and groans—smiles. Their class is an exhilarating combination of art, strength and flexibility, a heady alternative for people who want to work out while having a great time. “It is so much fun,” says student Amy Melbye. “It’s totally addictive. Absolutely, it’s the best fitness regimen you can imagine. I’m almost 40 and I’m in the best shape of my life. It’s a total body workout and it’s great for your core and upper body, where women have a lot of struggles. Every time I choose a new class level, it’s exciting.” Melbye has been taking circus classes for about two years, which included a three-month break to get over an injury. While the women in this Sunday’s group class have a year or more of experience and perform impressive flips, splits and combination routines high up on the apparatus, even beginners can pick up skills fairly quickly, according to Melbye. “My advice to people who think they’re not strong enough is to just start,” she says. “You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can start doing basic tricks.” Rachel Stegman founded Circus School of Arizona (CSA) in 2007 in the Airpark. The venture began with just one teacher, Stegman, and about 10 students. Today the school operates from Fitness Dynamics Studio off the Greenway-Hayden Loop with six teachers and about 400 active customers, ranging in age from kids to people in their 60s. At age 57, seasoned athlete Kristy Rae Ingebo of Phoenix figured she’d waited long enough to get in on the circus act. “I think it’s the thrill of being able to do something normal people can’t do, something really extraordinary,” she says. “I’m a cross-trainer and I do a lot of stuff. I teach martial arts, do Zumba, belly dancing, teach yoga, do hiking and a lot of mountain biking. This I

really love, and I feel like this is the time of my life to do it.” Scottsdale Realtor and yoga teacher Charlie Allred caught the bug after seeing a friend’s online videos of class. “She’d be flying on the silks and doing crazy stuff, flipping and dropping and I thought, ‘I’ve got to do that.’ I didn’t think it was this hard, but it’s totally fun.”

Circle of Classes

CSA offers a wide spectrum of classes, including this day’s work on the silks. There is also instruction in static trapeze, ropes and doubles trapeze and partner acrobatics. “We offer workshops on skills like handstands, hand balancing and contortion,” Stegman says. “Right now there isn’t anyone locally we can hire to teach that, but when we have special events and bring in artists, we have them stay an extra day to teach the workshops.” Today’s circus is more than aerials and acrobatics, Stegman says, and so is her school. “Circus is circle, all-encompassing, so we bring in a variety of local specialists who have strengths I don’t have. For example, Brian Foley, who taught clown classes at ASU, has taught clowning and plate-spinning for us. Todd Bailey, who has experience on Broadway, does a lot of choreography and dance classes for us.” While her school has grown, profitability still is a struggle. “My current location is conducive to aerial classes, but I’m limited to having just one activity going at once,” Stegman says. “Also, in aerials, you have to have small ratios—one teacher to six students—which means class fees are higher than for other activities, where you can have a one-to-15 ratio. Stegman hopes this will improve in the next year, when new after-school and summer camp programs kick in.

“Summer camps are the biggest source of revenue for most circus schools,” she says. “I’m doing a summer camp program this year with Rebound Gymnastics West in Scottsdale, but it’s only one day a week.” That will change next year when CSA operates a summer camp in partnership with Scottsdale Gymnastics in its new 10,000-square-foot facility. “They have a new building with 24-foot ceilings,” Stegman says. “There’s enough room for us to have several classes going at once, with kids doing tumbling, aerials, mini-trampoline, juggling, dance and other activities throughout the space.” Stegman also is planning an after-school program for next year with Tesseract School. Traditional marketing and advertising has been a challenge, Stegman says, because cash flow is limited.

“I haven’t had a lot of money to put into it, but when we’ve had events with places like Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Arizona Foothills magazine, we’ve done them at a reduced rate in return for a promotional package,” she says. “We also get a lot of free media exposure from events we’ve done at reduced rates for area nonprofits.”

Entertainment for Hire

Stegman also partners with Gregangelo & Velocity Arts and Entertainment, an arm of the San Francisco School of Circus Arts, to provide circus and other acts for corporate events. On some occasions, her company rents costumes from Gregangelo’s extensive collection. For larger events, Stegman and Gregangelo work together, sometimes bringing in artists from San Francisco. The events include a lot more than circus acts, Stegman says. “We’re an entertainment provider, and that includes circus, musicians, dancers, films, fiber optics and interactive galleries. We’re a turnkey operation, delivering our clients’ vision from concept to completion.” Clients have included Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale Pubic Art/Scottsdale Cultural Council, Tempe Festival of the Arts and the Glendale Glitter & Glow Block Party, along with private corporations, medical groups and law offices.

Nonprofit Outreach

Stegman, who hopes to one day own her own facility in the Airpark, is working to expand the school’s services for kids. “I’d like to have a ‘Social Circus’ element offered by CSA, which we have already started to develop with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona,” she says. “We also want to bring

circus to at-risk youth and bring together kids from different backgrounds.” Stegman is looking for sponsors to provide scholarships for kids in nonprofit programs, and to help fund outreach to classes for domestic violence victims, women recovering from breast cancer and others. “Nothing builds self-esteem more than being able to climb a rope and do tricks,” Stegman says. “It makes you feel superhuman.”

Super Kid Stuff

She should know. Circus has entranced Stegman most of her life. After trying an array of performance-oriented classes as a kid—from tap and ballet to ice skating—Stegman found her calling at age 9 during a family vacation. The Club Med offered a circus program, and she discovered her petite build and fearlessness were a perfect match for the genre’s unique challenges. The attraction never waned, even as she entered her turbulent teens. “I was still trying to find myself, and nothing ever clicked like the circus did,” she says. “When I was 16, I was in what my parents called an ‘alien stage’ and getting into trouble. They sent me to a performing arts camp in the Poconos in New York for the entire summer school break.” As fate would have it, the camp’s faculty included members of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. “I’d ditch the other activities and show up on their doorstep, trying to learn more,” she says. “That was my calling. They let me do some things they weren’t letting other campers do, like knife throwing. I really learned a lot in those months.”

Rachel Stegman describes a trick on the “Silky Beast” to Mary Adrenaline, Dakoa O’Kane and Natalie McDonald.

But with no circus training available in Scottsdale, where she grew up, Stegman had to put her circus aspirations on hold. It took six more years, including an associate's degree from Scottsdale Community College and studies at Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass., before Stegman was able to pursue her circus dream full-time. Part of her journey was moving to San Francisco to train and perform with Gregangelo Herrera and other coaches at the San Francisco School of Circus Arts (now called Circus Center, San Francisco). She also trained and taught at Trapeze Arts in Oakland, Calif. “I have students in circuses all over the world, including Cirque du Soleil’s KÀ in Las Vegas,” Stegman says. “The performers who portray the twins in that show were students of mine.” Meanwhile, Stegman and her husband wanted to start a family, and they moved back home to Scottsdale’s McCormick Ranch. “Most of my husband’s and my families are here,” she says. “I wanted to start my own business, and I knew I’d need family support.” Today, with her school established and growing, Stegman juggles the demands of home, with two small children and her company. Her life’s a circus, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I have big-top dreams for Circus School of Arizona,” she says. “I envision a large facility where people of all backgrounds, ages, and levels can come to learn a wide variety of circus arts including flying trapeze, aerial acrobatics, tight rope/high wire, Chinese pole, ground acrobatics, contortion, clowning, juggling and more, as well as many forms of dance and other variety arts. “I would love to see CSA reach the same status in the circus world as some of the other reputable schools in big cities across the U.S.” 

Tahana Hairston, Derivations Skincare cofounder

Dr. Jennifer Haley, Derivations Skincare cofounder

Along with dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Haley, Hairston created Derivations Skincare, a line based on best-beauty practices plucked from cultures across the world. Hairston, who describes herself as a biracial mix of French, American Indian and black, was studying at the famed Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix when the seed for Derivations was planted. Her young daughter asked some of her Indian classmates the secret to their luxuriant black hair. They explained that in their culture it was normal to oil one’s hair one night a week, and the result was gleaming, healthy hair. Already traveling internationally for school, the Greater Airpark resident began researching beauty regimes in a variety of cultures. “What I found is every region of the world is an expert, if you will, on solving particular skin-care issues,” she says. “For example, for hundreds of years, the Asian region has been concerned with brightening their skin. The Nordic region has been intensely concerned with correcting fine lines and wrinkles.”

Get Your FREE Energy Audit! Hairston and Haley mined a spectrum of beauty “secrets,” taking the recipes to an Arizona manufacturing company that Hairston found through her contacts, where skin-care scientists agreed to work with the most potent natural ingredients available. The result, she says, is the first truly global skin-care line—products not only gleaned from time-tested practices around the world but also able to resolve the challenges of every skin type. “It’s not that you would use the brightening serum because you are from Asia. You would use it because your issue is brightening your skin,” she says, and then points to her own ethnicity to paint another example. “I would use two products: Intensive Moisturizing Cream with Pomegranate and Olive, sourced from the south of Europe, where they traditionally have darker skin and aren’t as worried about fine lines but want a dewy, glowing look; and, if I had pigmented skin, I would use more of the Flawless Moisturizing Cream, which we modeled after Latin America [beauty secrets].”

The Derivations line made its debut in June after about two years of primary research and a year of development in which the women worked with chemists to source ingredients, tweak formulas and test blends. “While there is significant research behind most of the active ingredients in our products, we elected to invest in clinical trials,” says Haley, who maintains a practice in Colorado and a concierge service in North Scottsdale, where she lives part-time. “We recruited a group of women with diverse ethnic backgrounds to use our products for a 12-week study. The results were impressive! Not only did we receive positive feedback from the majority of participants regarding the uniqueness and elegance of the products, we were able to identify remarkable changes in the appearance of the women ... based on their before and after photos.” Why are Derivations Skincare products so beneficial for the skin? Haley says it’s the selection of natural ingredients, with perhaps the best example coming from the Nordic region, where women use the same active

Other examples of powerful components, she says, include white willow bark extract—an anti-inflammatory that increases skin-cell turnover and controls acne (used in Derivations’ purifying cleanser)—and antioxidants such as grape seed extract, tea oil, pomegranate-seed extract and a mixture of substances derived from rice-bran oil. Hairston doesn’t hesitate when asked which Derivations offering is destined to be a best seller. “Our Ultimate Rejuvenation Night Cream, and I’ll tell you why. It has the highest concentration of vitamin A an over-the-counter product can have,” she says. “Vitamin A increases collagen, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. The cream also has every single amino acid that your body needs to feed the skin and make it healthy.” The night cream incorporates more than 25 amino acids in addi…continues on page 34

…continued from page 32 tion to sea kelp coral, turmeric, mitochondria from cauliflower and several other ingredients. The concoction is so potent, Hairston adds, it was necessary to add natural fragrances to disguise the vitamin aroma. The name Derivations was chosen for the line to reflect the importance of the ingredients. “It’s a synonym of ‘origins,’” Hairston says. “It’s really that simple: to derive from a root.”

Missing Link

Derivations’ mission is two pronged. While conducting market research, Hairston unearthed another problem shared by many consumers of skin-care products. “People have no idea what to buy,” she says. “If they knew what products worked and were personalized for the skin, they would purchase them, independent of what the cost was.” So when Hairston and Haley built their company, they included a plan for experts to virtually provide customers with free personalized evaluations.

When someone buys a Derivations product, they receive an email inviting them to complete a checklist of skin issues and information about their background and ethnicity. A consultant then responds with recommendations and checks in with the consumer monthly for at least three months, up to a year—depending on how long the service is wanted. Clients are asked to email photographs every three to four weeks so the consultant can see how the skin is progressing. “I like the idea of experts solving skin-care problems. Period,” Hairston says. “When we hire somebody to be a consultant, they have to be a trained aesthetician or a nurse.” Derivations Skincare may now be purchased online, with products ranging in price from $40 to $150. Customers can expect a follow-up email from one of the aestheticians from Haley’s office, who have been trained in the product line. As business grows, more consultants will be added to the team. In the meantime, the women are busy

networking with local aestheticians and spas to spread the word about their product. “This has really been an exciting and fun adventure for us because we know our product works,” Hairston says. “At this point, it’s really about marketing and just sharing with others this great company.”  To contact Dr. Haley about her concierge service, call 970-417-9636. She is also available for appointments at Clear Dermatology & Aesthetics Center, 20201 N. Scottsdale Healthcare Drive (480-398-1550). The Derivations Skincare line includes cleansers, toners, eye creams, brightening serum, SPF protection, and body lotion designed to target wrinkles, dark spots, dry skin and aging prevention. Prices range from $40 to $150. Visit derivationsskincare.com to shop online or find local retailers.

ust as apartments are making big news this year in Scottsdale, rentals and renters have been an important part of the city’s history. Current issues include building height, potential disturbance of scenic views, proximity to Scottsdale airport, and the cost/benefit of apartment renters vs. homeowners to the city’s infrastructure. Also under scrutiny are compatible architecture, the change that apartment dwellers are making to Scottsdale’s overall demographics, lack of affordable housing options, and whether the trend to rent vs. own will continue for young, mobile professionals. Yesterday’s debates involved several of the same themes, but also included the periodic demand for more housing (especially during and after World War II) and the demand for affordable housing within our once agriculture-based economy. Other concerns were housing for relocating people making the transition from seasonal to full-time residents. Large apartment complexes are a phenomenon of the past 50 or 60 years in Scottsdale. Prior to the 1950s, renters leased a room, a guesthouse or an apartment connected to a retail space from a private owner in this once small farming village. A post-World War II migration of new residents, particularly after Motorola brought thousands of high-tech workers to Scottsdale in 1957, created new demand for a variety of housing options and spurred the growth of apartment complexes in the 1960s. Consider these bits of Scottsdale history: • The Underhills became one of the first “landlords” in Scottsdale when they began renting rooms at their home— which they called Oasis Villa—on the northwest corner of Scottsdale and Indian School roads in the late 1890s. • Scottsdale’s first resident artist, Marjorie Thomas, rented a tent home from Walter and Helen Smith on Indian School Road when she, her mother and brother arrived from Boston in 1909. Thomas became a lifelong resident and is credited with helping create Scottsdale’s cachet as an art community. • Around 1910, Ed Graves and his wife opened Graves Guest Ranch on the site

• When shops were built in downtown Scottsdale during the 1920s-1940s, they often included a second-floor apartment to rent. Earl’s Market on the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Main Street and the U.S. Post Office (later Porter’s Western Wear) on Brown Avenue were two storefronts that included secondfloor walkups. • With a critical shortage of housing during World War II, the federal Public Housing Administration, under the Lantham Act, selected Scottsdale for the location of a public housing project for war workers as well as military personnel and their families assigned to Thunderbird II Airfield north of Scottsdale (now the Scottsdale Airport/ Airpark). A federal court condemned acreage on the northwest corner of Second Street and Marshall Way, paying “Doc” Bishop $2,400 for the land previously used for crop farming. Opened in 1943, Thunderbird Homes was comprised of one-story, functional apartments built to house families in efficiencies. A recreation building was also constructed, where many community

meetings took place. Virgie Lutes Brown was Thunderbird Homes’ first manager; after Scottsdale incorporated in 1951, the rental housing project came under the town’s oversight. The apartment buildings were auctioned off to the public and removed in 1960 to make way for a parking lot. The Stagebrush Theater was built on the site in 1968 and the Loloma Transit Center opened there in the 1990s. The Scottsdale Museum of the West is set to open in December 2014 where war workers and their families once rented. • Thunderbird II Airfield Manager John Swope and his actress wife, Dorothy McGuire, rented a house from George and Rachel Ellis in the Cattle Track area during World War II, hosting parties there for their Hollywood friends. Others from Thunderbird II also rented at Cattle Track, as did artists and entertainers. • After World War II, there was a criti-

cal building materials shortage, and former wartime structures were repurposed into rentals for businesses and housing. For example, Quonset huts were moved into downtown Scottsdale, painted pastel and rented as apartments referred to as The Mushrooms. [Editor’s note: If you have photos of The Mushrooms, please email kimberly@timespublications.com.] • Retired obstetrician Dr. Phil Schneider, after relocating to Scottsdale from the Chicago area in the late 1940s, built one of the town’s first multiunit apartment structures. The one-story Adobe Apartments on First Avenue, built in 1953, included carports and a central courtyard, and attracted many seasonal residents. It is now listed on Scottsdale’s Historic Register. • In the 1960s, young workers, seasonal residents and retirees coming to Scottsdale created new demand for rental properties. Garden apartments

in small to medium-sized complexes were built in and near the downtown Scottsdale area. Even spring training teams created demand for rentals, and the Oriole Apartments opened near the Scottsdale Ballpark (to host the Baltimore Orioles spring training in 1956-1958). Distinctive names of apartments included White Feather, Jacaranda, Regal Arms, Scottsdale Manor, Dayo, Granada, Loloma Vista, El Dorado, Shalimar Sands, Savoy Plaza and Sun Valley. Many still stand as evidence of Midcentury Modern architecture. • According to “Scottsdale Postwar Multifamily Housing Survey,” a report prepared by Debbie Able and Liz Wilson for the city of Scottsdale in 2003, “More than 100 multifamily projects of varying sizes had been built [in Scottsdale], mainly between 1955 and 1965.” The report also says that “demand for luxury rentals was particularly strong in Scottsdale in the postwar era. What’s Your Story? Sept. 27 event for businesswomen harnesses power of storytelling

O

nce upon a time, an inventive executive told a story that connected with all who heard it, motivating them to feel, act and remember. Want to know more? That’s the power of storytelling as a professional tool, and the subject of a Sept. 27 Scottsdale workshop for businesswomen. The class is the first “Odyssey Adventure” presented by Conscious Connections. “Effective communication is the No. 1 skill of successful leaders,” said Kindra Hall, Odyssey Adventure facilitator and founder of Live to Tell. “The ability to productively convey an idea is the key to engaging employees and customers, and the best way to do that is through story. “Whether it is in a sales setting, a motivational setting or an informational setting, a story will make whatever you have to say resonate.” In the course of a day, participants will be guided through a step-by-step process of finding and crafting their stories. They will be led to share their messages in a way that inspires, moves and connects. Each partici-

pant will tell her story at the end of the session, having built the foundation for storytelling on both a personal and professional level. “We all have powerful stories within us: stories that have shaped us, that have moved us, that have made us. Big or small, these stories are the key to human connection and our success,” Kindra said. Conscious Connections President & Founder Kristi Hall said a new kind of leadership training is needed in today’s environment. That’s why Hall created Odyssey Adventures. The experiential learning program focuses on core leadership issues such as communication, intuitive intelligence, and courage. “Participants will be taken on a journey of self-discovery that changes the way they think, feel and act. Immediate demonstration anchors the experience and builds confidence,” she said. The workshop will be Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (location to be announced). The investment is $495. Register at www.consciousconnectionsglobal.com.

Kindra Hall is a speaker, story advisor and the founder of Live to Tell. She works with individuals, small businesses, nonprofits and brands to help them find, craft and tell their own stories to enhance their messages, influence their customers/audience, and be remembered.

About Conscious Connections

Conscious Connections’ purpose is to inspire, connect and empower professional women for success. The company presents monthly inspirational luncheons where local leaders share their “Ted Talk,” as well as quarterly Odyssey Adventures for women to develop leadership skills such as courage and communication through experiential learning. Other offerings include mentorship and an annual Discovery Year. Those in the Scottsdale Airpark business community may remember Conscious Connections Founder Kristi Hall from her former position with the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, when she organized First Friday Airpark Breakfasts. Organized by Affordable Food Festivals (AZ Taco Fest, AZ BBQ Fest) and Michael’s Catering, Scottsdale Beer Palooza attracted just over 2,000 thirsty beer drinkers to the giant North Hall facility at Scottsdale’s WestWorld. Attendees were given a nifty minimug upon check-in, as well as tickets good for 20 samples from more than 100 beers. After a few summer ales and fruity seasonal beers, folks took turns playing badminton, bean-bag toss, beer pong, and other games. A DJ played background music during most of the event, before

the Guns N’ Roses cover band took to the stage (hilarious but sounded good). Beer reps reported they were happy with the turnout, noting that the crowd didn’t seem to be filled with the usual “beer nerd” suspects. Scottsdale residents came out in casual Saturday attire, ready for a fun day of day drinking. The beer reps seemed to enjoy introducing their craft beers to this entirely new audience. Attendees likely would have appreciated more food options, though. Lines queued up for the pair of food trucks and grill station by Michael’s. But kudos for this final feature: organizers set up a Beer Store so guests could actually purchase their favorite beers to

go. Growlers of O.H.S.O.’s Coffee Cream Ale were among the most popular. Other top sellers included beer from local Four Peaks and SanTan breweries, as well as brews from national brands like Sapporo and Goose Island. Thankfully, Discount Cab had a strong presence at the event, and handed out coupons for rides that day. The next day, some 200 cars remained in the WestWorld parking lot … the sign of a fun event. Organizers say they’d like to make Scottsdale Beer Palooza an annual event, possibly even a bi-annual. Stay tuned for announcements on the event Facebook page or at www.ScottsdaleBeerPalooza.com. 

How to Create a Digital Marketing Strategy and Find Success through the Power of Focus By Eric Olsen, Fasturtle

T

wo great quotes come to mind when thinking about business strategy. One is funny, and one is much as you would expect: “I don’t know the secret to success. But I do know the secret to failure is trying to please everybody.” —Bill Cosby “A satisfied customer is the best business strategy of all.” — Michael LeBoeuf I think these two quotes are a great guiding light for the small business owner. In their simplest form they both are really speaking about clarity, focus and the customer. So let’s look at some of the best practices in putting together a digital marketing plan that allows you to strategically outperform your competition and create results in the marketplace. In the coming paragraphs you can easily remove the word “digital” and use this info as a guide to create a defined business strategy as well. There are many companies that believe

50 | Scottsdale Airpark News August 2014

they don’t need to have a strong digital marketing strategy to be successful. But while they may be able to maintain or even grow their revenue, their customers are gradually moving to the Internet to make buying decisions. That’s why companies without a great digital strategy are leaving huge amounts of money on the table and losing customers to competitors who do have a plan.

Let’s Begin

In digital marketing, like all forms of business, it is best to have your strategy defined before you begin with implementation. So before you create your first YouTube video or Facebook group, think through these points: 1. Your target customer and the problems you are solving 2. Differentiation and branding plan 3. Customer assessment (where they are and where they will be) 4. Your tactical plan 5. Results and feedback

Once you have this figured out, you can think about which marketing channels will be best for your business.

Targeting Your Customers

The first step in most marketing strategies is to identify your target customers. It allows you to focus your message, differentiate your product and figure out how to reach people who might buy your service or product. Unfortunately, many companies approach this step incorrectly. In an attempt not to exclude any potential revenue, a common mistake is to describe targets by a range of values and characteristics. An example of a generic description is “any company earning more than $1 million in revenue by selling red widgets.” This doesn’t allow you to focus at all. The right way to do targeting is to narrow down the universe of prospects to one hypothetical target individual or one perfect company; or, if you need to, to one ideal individual or company in every market segment you care about. And then tell the story of this individual.

Psychographic Overview • Woman • First child between -5 months and 9 months • Spends $1,500+/mo. online • Lives 1,000+ miles from parents and in-laws • Lives within 3 miles of existing facility

As you can see, these are two completely different ways to see the same customer.

Why Targeting Is Important

A high-end Scottsdale hotel would want to pick a single character profile: e.g. Jane, a 42-year-old physician living in Chicago. She is a Republican, went to college, loves the outdoors and will be taking her family on a hiking trip this year. The idea is to focus on a single person and maximize the width of your value curve by catering to others, not marketing to them. Other factors you could look at in your hypothetical target customer include the following: • Buying habits – How do they find and learn about products they buy? • If part of a business, consider company size, type, revenue, business model, cash available, etc. • Do they use the Internet? Then a digital …continues on page 52 August 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 51

marketing strategy is probably right for you. Psychograph (e.g., social characteristics, political views). All the problems they have including the problems you can help solve. Other services and products they use. Why they will buy your product. Why they might not buy your product.

This will help you focus and prioritize your strategic thinking in all other areas.

Digital Branding & Differentiation

Contrary to what many believe, branding isn’t about your logo. Branding is about how your company makes your target customers feel. It can be extremely difficult but very powerful once mastered. Here are the steps. Step 1 - Differentiation Consistency breeds differentiation, or so I say. It turns out that our brains are hardwired to only notice what is different. This means that everything that you

do should be as unique yet consistent as possible to ensure you are noticed. This process starts with your company name and logo, but covers everything from your advertising to the service you deliver. Consider the differentiation Apple has created with its website, advertisements, retail stores and actual products. The fundamental rule to remember is be different yet consistent. Step 2 - Focused To maintain your differentiation, you need to provide a consistent message. You don’t want your customers to see a fuzzy picture of you or your company. To make sure you are focused, take the focus test below and see if you can answer the questions in one sentence or less, and do it in a way your competitors can’t. The Focus Test Who are you? What do you do? Why does it matter?

Step 3 – Communication Here is the last major question in your digital marketing strategy. Do you have a good communication plan? If you want to do this online, it means getting digitally integrated, which is what Fasturtle is all about. It means always being consistent, no matter how many people are working with your brand. One way of testing your communication consistency is to consider every point of contact your company has to the customer—and then look at whether your customers can tell if something is from you without you telling them. Does your website match your Facebook? Match your Google Plus? Match your Twitter? Match your advertising?

Digital Marketing Tactical Plan

After you have considered your customer and your brand, it is time to determine which marketing channels you will use. Every tactical plan is different. The reason why marketing on the Internet is so powerful is the huge amount of channels

digitalmarketing to use. Almost every potential customer is online for one reason or another. So there is a lot of room for creativity. Here is a partial list of potential online channels you could use to reach your customers: Search engine marketing (organic and paid), email campaigns, affiliate marketing, social media, rich media, feed services (e.g., Twitter), blogs, news-release engines and online stores. There are two additional steps I recommend for determining which channels to use. 1) You must determine which ones your customers are using, and 2) Determine which ones your competitors aren’t. To illustrate this point, it may not be a good idea to start a new blog if a competitor has already created a successful one, or you might not want to use Twitter if less than 1 percent of you rcustomers have even heard of it. Fish where your fish are.

Feedback, Feedback, Feedback

With any good marketing program there is a way to attain customer feed-

back and adjust your strategy accordingly. One of the best ways to report or gather pertinent customer data is with Google Analytics. Today it is very easy to determine whether marketing campaigns are successful by tracking the number of visitors to your site. You can test your site design with A/B tests and see where potential customers are exiting your sites. This is how you will judge how well your digital marketing is performing, so become familiar with it. On another note, a great tool to gather customer feedback is using Constant Contact’s small-business tools including the online survey platform. It is very easy to implement and connect with all of your social media and email marketing campaigns. Like anything in life, proper planning will allow you to visualize and clarify success and give you the tools to make it happen. I hope this article has given you some basic planning tips to get you and

your business on the way to digital marketing success. Where do you see online marketing going in 2014? Do you have an Internetmarketing question? Please send it to eric@fasturtle.com and I will try to answer it in the coming months.  Eric Olsen founded the Airpark’s Fasturtle, a website design and SEO firm, in 2000, providing business owners strategic digital marketing solutions. The Best Massage You (Probably) Never Heard of …

at Lymphatic Healing Center By Kimberly Hundley Photos by Sam Nalven

I Most post-surgical patients report feeling 50 percent to 80 percent better after just one treatment.

t’s not that no one has heard of lymphatic massage. But the treatment is obscure enough that Nancy Wakely has to dedicate a large chunk of her time to schooling potential clients about just what she does, how her approach is different, and what a difference stimulating fluids in the “tree of life” can make to their well-being. “Most people don’t even know what the lymphatic system is. I’m trying to educate the doctors and the public, and let people know I’m here to help heal,” says Wakely, who founded the Lymphatic Healing Center in the Greater Airpark 14 years ago. …continues on page 56

Nancy Wakely, owner

The center’s tagline, “We move fluids,” sums up the mechanics of the massage, and a quick biology lesson illuminates the benefits. Wakely likes to describe how the lymphatic system has two jobs: to bathe every cell in the body and to detox and cleanse the liquid coursing beneath 90 percent of our skin. Lymph nodes, she says, use their "hairy little arms to grab toxins," which then must be pumped from the body. Wakely and her staff coax the lymphatic system to move and drain by every-sogently stroking key areas throughout the body, which boosts the immune system and stimulates the metabolism. “Right now, lymphatic treatment is the best keep secret,” Wakely says. “We live in a very toxic world—the air we breathe, the food we eat, the clothing we wear. When your body is bombarded with toxins, it will store what it can’t process. That’s why everybody needs a lymphatic every now and then.” During her 20 years as a massage therapist, Wakely became an avid student of the lymphatic system and developed her own

approach to treatments based on feedback from clients and doctors as well as her own observations. For one thing, her massages last 90 minutes, substantially longer than those of other providers, because she noticed clients got much better results. She also begins with a 25-minute organ massage, a step not incorporated in traditional lymphatic training, which her studies revealed hadn’t been updated in five decades. “The abdomen is the main dumping ground where everything is processed and eliminated, and more focus needs to be there,” she says. “So many people are clogged up due to poor diet and routines. If your digestive track is sluggish or having issues, it slows everything else down.”

Post-Surgery Godsend

Wakely’s most ardent fans discovered her out of necessity following a surgical procedure that left them with painful swelling, a common side effect of going under the knife. The center works regularly with about 15 plastic surgeons and other doctors …continues on page 58

…continued from page 56 who believe lymphatic treatment speeds healing and gives patients better results. Part of Wakely’s challenge in growing her business is convincing more surgeons of the value of her service. “There are doctors out there who don’t get what I do,” she says. “They just send their patients home and tell them, ‘You’ll be fine.’ And I’m over here flailing my arms, going, ‘I’m here! I can help you heal!’” Retired schoolteacher Jami Peterson is among those clients who call Wakely a “guardian angel.” After enduring a botched surgery that sparked a chain reaction of horrors worthy of a Stephen King novel, Peterson found herself dealing with chronic edema. The puffiness was so acute, she couldn’t even put her shoes on. Her doctor didn’t recommend lymphatic massage—or even diagnose her—but an offhand comment by her anesthesiologist prompted her to research edema online, and there she found the Lymphatic Healing Center’s comprehensive website. “Nancy has healing hands and she is remarkable. The methodology Nancy has developed has given relief to lots of postop patients. I live in Tempe, but I choose to make the trek up the 101 to her because

she’s worth the effort,” says Peterson, who credits the surgeries for disrupting her system and causing chronic lymphedema. Over the course of those first 19 weeks, Peterson came in for a massage about every five days. At the end of the period, she not only felt immeasurably better, she’d lost 39 pounds, a testament to the lymphatic system’s link to body metabolism. She now visits twice a month to manage her condition. In some types of cancer surgery, lymph nodes are removed, and without the little “drains” doing their job, fluid builds up. Scottsdale resident Debra Kolbert, a 10-year cancer survivor, found Wakely through a Groupon-type promotion. She was familiar with the type of massage through the Virginia G. Piper Center in Scottsdale, where she’d been treated for swelling in her arm following surgery, but preferred the Lymphatic Healing Center. When the lymphedema flared up a couple years later, she returned to the Airpark locale. “If you go to Nancy’s facility, it’s very soothing and they are very sympathetic. The idea is to help you get better,” she says. “The Piper center is more like going to a physical therapist—it’s more clinical, and

Clients typically follow their 90-minute lymphatic healing treatment with 20 to 30 minutes in the infrared sauna, celebrated by health practitioners as a safe way to relieve toxic buildup and charge the metabolism. A single half-hour session can burn up to 300 calories, and several of Wakely’s clients have purchased the sauna for their homes so they can use it on a daily basis.

sometimes it feels like they are just checking boxes until you’re finished.” Wakely wishes surgical patients would come to her prior to their procedures as well. “Some studies in Europe show moving the lymph system before surgery resulted in less scar tissue, keloids and that 1 percent ‘ick’ factor,” she says. Other benefits of lymphatic massage include smoother results from liposuction; reduced swelling and bruising following cosmetic procedures such as face lifts and “Mommy Makeovers”; an immediate increase in movement and mobility after all types of procedures, even colonoscopy; and a lessening of pain. Wakely moved from Shea Boulevard to the larger Airpark facility to ensure she’d have enough therapists to accommodate doctor referrals without anyone having to wait for treatment. She hasn’t raised her fee in years. “The cost is very reasonable, and there’s a reason for that. The doctors are here in Scottsdale, but the clients are coming from all over the Valley,” she says. “I want everyone to be able to afford to come here. It’s so important for their healing.” 

Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented Opens Registration

R

egistration is open for the 2014 Parent Institute, presented by the Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented, on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Grand Canyon University. The event features speakers, educational exhibitions and interactive breakout sessions by professionals in the gifted community. Dr. Amy Serin, founder of The Serin Center, a multidisciplinary center for psychological assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of adults and children, will serve as the one-day event’s keynote speaker. The cost to attend the full-day program is $25 per adult, and registration is open at arizonagifted.org. “The goal of this program is to teach parents and caregivers effective tools to address and nurture their gifted children’s needs,” says Patty Messer, president of AAGT. More than 300 parents attended in 2013, prompting AAGT to move the institute to a bigger venue, Grand Canyon University, to accommodate the rapidly growing community of parents of gifted children in Arizona. “According to the National Association for Gifted Children’s 2013 State of the States in Gifted Education Report, in public schools alone, there are more than 86,500 identified gifted and talented students in Arizona,” said Messer. “Because gifted children have unique needs, providing education and support for parents and caregivers, as well as connections with other parents of gifted children, is critical.” While parents and caregivers attend the institute, their children are welcome to take part in the AAGT Super Saturday, an onsite enrichment program featuring hands-on learning opportunities as well as innovative educational games, arts and STEM workshops. Any child in grades K-8 who has a parent attending the institute may be a part of Super Saturday. The cost to attend is $25 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Day care is not provided for children outside of the K-8 age range. Additional information on speakers and breakout sessions will be available on AAGT’s website. Tickets are limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. More: arizonagifted.org. 

Danny’s Car Wash Parcel Sold

The parcel containing Danny’s Family Car Wash on Scottsdale Road was sold for $6.5 million cash, or $2 million per acre, reported Phoenix Business Journal. Pacific Scottsdale acquired the 3.25 acres and has long-term redevelopment plans. Ari Spiro, president of Orion Investment Real Estate, who helped broker the deal, said the property could be redeveloped into a hotel, retail complex or a mixed-use project. The car wash itself has three years left on its lease and was not part of the purchase. The financially troubled local car wash faces an Aug. 16 foreclosure sale related to a $10 million loan.

Occupancy for Market Street at DC Ranch Increases 6%

Occupancy at Market Street at DC Ranch Property now stands at 86 percent, an increase of 6 percent since the property was purchased in December 2013, announced Whitestone REIT, a fully integrated real estate company that owns, operates and redevelops Community Centered Properties. The increase is the result of signing

eight new leases totaling approximately 15,000 square feet. Two additional dining options will be added to the property: Jalapeno Inferno Restaurant and The Living Room Wine Cafe & Lounge. Other new tenants are Paradise Medspa, DC Ranch Community Medicine, GoldenHawk Financial, Pavoreal Interiors, Lindsey Schultz Design and DC Dance AZ. Leases for these tenants have been signed and the locations will be opening in the coming months. Additionally, Safeway, the Center’s grocery anchor has committed to a $500,000 investment in its store to enhance the shopping experience for its customers. Market Street was acquired in December 2013, and includes a Safeway Grocery and Fleming’s Steak House, Grimaldi’s Pizza, Wells Fargo and MidFirst Bank wealth management offices, McCormick & Co., and Edward Jones, among the nationally recognized tenants; locally recognized tenants include Market Street Kitchen and Herb Box restaurants. James C. Mastandrea, Whitestone’s chairman and CEO said, “The second location of Scottsdale’s renowned Jalapeno Inferno Restaurant in a Whitestone Community Center demonstrates a key aspect of our business model—expanding our tenants to profitably build their businesses by meeting the needs of residents in the surrounding communities. Their success is our success.” As the company continues to gain traction in its newest region, Phoenix, it expects to expand in other markets in Texas, he added. 

The Cognitive Dissonance Market

Investors’ staggering indifference amid rising dangers By Thomas K. Brueckner, Strategic Asset Conservation

A

s a 25-year financial industry veteran with a broad background in managed money, market history and risk mitigation, I have become amused—almost shocked really—at the cognitive dissonance being displayed by some in the investing public in this sixth year of our Federal Reserve’s “Recovery Market.” Not since early 2000 during the heady days of a peaking tech/dot-com market, have I seen such displays of indifference for the market’s 183 percent advance of the last 65 months. In essence, investors have become divided into two groups: an older, 65-80, never-trust-themarket-again crowd, and a slightly younger,

45-65 group of tightrope walkers with all too short a memory, motivated more by a desire not to “miss out” than by a love of what the market is offering. (Clearly both groups are misapplying sound investing principals, but more on that later.) To listen to the talking heads on Wall Street, one might think that simply because we’ve finally recovered our index valuations from 2000 and 2007, though the NASDAQ is still 15 percent below its all-time high 14½ years later, that those two crashes (-51 percent and -57 percent respectively) never happened. It’s as if we’re to believe we were dreaming when we twice lost half of the

monies that it took some of us 40 years to save, encouraged to “stay the course”, i.e. remain risk-exposed, by a brokerage industry’s clichés of “long term investor”—even at 65 years and older, and the seductive inquiry, “You don’t want to miss out do you?” Presumably it makes sense to some to ride a collapsing market all the way down, just so you can ride it tentatively back up— like burning your house down just so you can rebuild it.

Unloved Bull

One of the things that has amazed market watchers about this particular bull

financialfundamentals market is how truly unloved it has been. While the indexes have reacquired new record highs this year, they have done so amid a staggering decline in trading volume. Average daily trading volume, tallied by month, was down over 53 percent—just 5.8 billion shares in May, less than half of the peak of 12.3 billion shares achieved prior to the financial crisis. “There seems to be no excitement in the market anymore,” says Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. He and others worry that lower trading volumes for U.S. stocks might indicate a disturbing lack of confidence in the market, even as stock prices march higher and the Dow Jones Industrial Average hovers near 17,000. The growing list of geopolitical hotspots around the world is another potentially catastrophic area that investors are ignoring at their peril, according to most seasoned market watchers. Conflicts between Syria, Israel, Iran and now Jordan in the Middle East, are a continuous threat to oil price stability, and threaten to ensnare larger economies in Europe and Russia.

The announced failure of a key Portuguese bank to make its most recent interest payments to its creditors has reawakened Wall Street to the still-unsolved structural problems in Europe, even as German and French industrial production, along with investor confidence, seems to have hit a wall. On our own shores, we are witnessing the slow, painful death of many retail bellwethers, from food service and apparel to home improvement. Wal-Mart profits dropped by $220 million in the first quarter as U.S. store traffic declined by 1.4 percent. Target profits dropped by $80 million, Sears lost $358 million, and sales at Kmart plunged more than 5 percent. JC Penney, Kohl’s, Costco and Staples also saw reduced profits, the latter falling by 44 percent as sales collapsed and the office supply retailer announced the closing of hundreds of stores. The Gap, Ann Taylor, American Eagle, Aeropostale, Big Lots, Best Buy, Macy’s, Dollar General, Urban Outfitters—even McDonald’s—saw earnings drop substantially. If the market’s advance is supposed to

be earnings based, someone has clearly forgotten to phone in these results. In a famous Peanuts cartoon, Lucy begs Charlie Brown to take yet another run at the football she is holding, pledging not to pull the ball away but to allow him to kick it with all his might. Like today’s investors, poor Charles seems unable to learn from his own history, and lands flat on his back for the umpteenth time, lectured by Lucy as to how gullible he has been yet again. As Galbraith said, “The extreme brevity of the financial memory” is eternally at work in the market and the only thing we learn from market history is that we continually refuse to learn from market history. AUGUST Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success. ARIES 3/21-4/19 It will take more than talking or thinking to get projects off your drawing board. This month, it will take hard work and sheer determination. Don’t let the Full Moon on the 10th deter your focus. The week of the 17th requires your full attention and followthrough. The 19th is ideal for mixing social time with work time. Arrange meetings, a luncheon date or just make contacts with alliances. The last week is more productive for both work and personal goals. TAURUS 4/20-5/20 August’s pace gives you time to consider options for business and job opportunities. No need to respond immediately (1st-10th). It’s OK to take time off for pleasure (1st-16th). The workplace heats up after the 18th. The second half of 2014’s changes may require more flexibility in your thinking and a revamped approach to doing things. GEMINI 5/21-6/21 Since 2011, you’ve had your share of challenges. And last month’s mental trials likely resulted in clarity or a change in the work pattern. A planetary move this month allows you to be more creative. You are never at a loss for words. Things may get off to a slow start, but momentum picks up by midmonth. You get a new perspective as circumstances change with the New Moon on the 25th. And you are doing what you do best: selling yourself. CANCER 6/22-7/22 You’ve had a good run in 2013-2014 and hopefully took advantage of every opportunity that came your way. August’s aspects favor creative financing vs. digging into savings for pleasure trips. Time off for leisure or family is OK until the 23rd. Then it’s time to get your focus back to the office. Expect changes in your workweek itinerary. LEO 7/23-8/22 It’s about time you had a breakthrough, and this month you have the motivation to come up with ideas. The next 12 months ahead are lucky (meaning opportunities will present themselves, but it’s up to you to take action). The 8th and 9th encourage

66 | Scottsdale Airpark News August 2014

you to implement changes so that you can move forward. The week of the 18th focuses on earning potential, with primo connections and openings continuing for the next four weeks. VIRGO 8/23-9/22 You are productive, a hard worker, a perfectionist, and as soon as you reach a goal, you’re already planning your next one. The early part of this month should be spent more on relaxation and personal pleasure or family enjoyment. The later part of August requires give and take in the workplace when dealing with the needs of others. The sun moving into your own sign on the 23rd increases your physical energy and motivation, so expect to accomplish more in less time. LIBRA 9/23-10/22 Is big money the equivalent of success and happiness? Are you what you are or what you have? These are the kinds of questions you’ll be asking yourself the first couple of weeks. The planet Jupiter (abundance) has moved into Leo, and this transit is often a sign of wasteful spending or overindulgence. The first half of the month encourages you to implement financial changes. Focus is on earning potential for the next several weeks. But wait. All work and no play is not August’s theme. A bit of self-indulgence can be therapeutic, so book that flight but plan on returning before the 23rd. SCORPIO 10/23-11/21 Work this month can be demanding, but nothing you can’t control. Saturn’s recent shift releases professional and personal pressures. You can meet your goals more effectively by working cooperatively with others. Team action is the watchword. Create a balance between your own self-interests and other people’s— whether it is a partnership, a corporate issue or an individual client. Get physically active to release frustrations. SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 Cooperation brings harmony as you start out your workweek. Travel-related plans are enjoyable, and mixing a bit of personal time off with work schedules can be

accomplished with little interference. Watch out for the Full Moon on the 10th: Don’t push an issue or speak out prematurely. If you work hard and trust your feelings on a matter around the third week, nothing will prevent you from being successful. Arrange a presentation for the 18th-19th. CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 Start out the month by arranging a number of luncheon dates with clients or associates. The Leo sun supports a bit of networking, and investing your personal time in relevant social events will not be a waste. The emphasis is on creative marketing. It takes effort to attract quality people. Your workload increases by the 25th. Expect to put in extra time the last week of the month, and your efforts will be worthwhile. AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18 Interacting with others in all arenas is a top priority this month. A major planetary change that continues for the next 12 months introduces others into your professional world. Pay attention to them, as they will have much to offer you. Polish up your people skills this month so you look and act your best, especially during the Full Moon on the 10th when first impressions will count for a lot. Finances are highlighted beginning on the 18th. The next few months are favorable for forming a partnership or embarking on a project with others. PISCES 2/19-3/20 Look for enhanced opportunities and people whose energy inspires and encourages you. Get out using all forms of communication. This is the year to let go of what is not working and start a new work phase, one that will make you happier. Start that plan now. Use your imagination and networking contacts (16th-31st) and stay on task. The forced discipline of the last few years pays off within the next few months. Be detailed and serious minded … and stay on task.  Have a question or inquiry? Contact Weiss at weissastro@aol.com or 480-600-7424.
