All-on-4™ Treatment Concept

Beautiful New Teeth in One Day

W

ould you be surprised if I told you that there is a new procedure where we can give you a complete set of fixed teeth in one day? This is a new teeth-replacement technique ideal for patients who are suffering from bad, non-salvageable teeth or who have been wearBy G. Sroujieh, DDS, AFAAID ing dentures for a long time. Beautiful sets of teeth in one day are possible with this technique, called All-On-4™ concept. In All-On-4™, we use 4 special implants to attach a new set of permanent teeth. In most cases, patients lacking the minimum amount of bone required to support regular dental implants or who have been told that they were not candidates for implants will enjoy the benefit of this technique since it requires less bone volume with no bone grafting or membranes. All-On–4™ dental implant concept is a new implant technique that was originally developed to help people with severe bone loss in the posterior area of the jaws. This technique offers a solution of fixed teeth for patients who, until now, had no other options than wearing uncomfortable dentures.

Patients usually receive entire arches of fixed teeth on the same day of the surgery. How does it work? Before considering All-On-4™ dental implant technique, it is necessary to have your case evaluated by the doctor. During the initial consultation, the doctor will listen to your concerns and offer you solutions based on your specific problems or needs. A clinical exam will be done and xrays will be taken. Also, they might conduct a 3-D CT SCAN of your jaws so they can plan your dental surgery virtually on the computer using special software. Impressions or molds also will be taken at that visit to allows them to fabricate the new set of teeth in the lab. On the day of the surgery, any remaining teeth will be removed. Dental implants will be placed and a customized, non-removable prosthetic bridge will be attached to the implants. This fixed set of teeth will be worn for three to six months. After that time, it will replaced with a permanent, more natural looking one. In the few months following the surgery (the healing phase), implants will go through osseointegration, meaning new bone will be forming around the implants and making a biological bond with them. During this time, the patient will be using his/her new fixed teeth, eating and speaking nor-

mally. Three to six months after the surgery, once the bone has bonded with the implants, a permanent new set of teeth will be fabricated and attached to the implants. All-On-4™ concept offers many benefits. First, it is an ideal solution for patients with poor bone volume. Second, fewer implants will be needed, unlike other methods, lowering the cost. And imagine enjoying all your favorite foods again, with a fully restored sense of taste and no messy adhesives. AllOn-4™ implants boost your self esteem, giving you fixed teeth in only one day with no need to remove them at night or after meals for cleaning. So, if you are tired of wearing loose dentures and all the hassles that come with them, the All On4™ implant solution will solve your problems. You will never have to experience the crippling effect of eating on moving plates, the embarrassment of dentures slipping during speech, messy adhesives, removing teeth at night or not being able to enjoy the taste of food. With All-On-4™ dental implant concept, the doctor can restore your smile and give you permanent teeth in just one day. Say goodbye to dentures forever! All-on-4™ is a trade mark of Nobel Biocare (Yorba Linda, CA)

editor’s note

Game Changer

C

hange is as hard as it is exhilarating. We can debate why it’s hard, but there’s no quibbling with the difficulty level. Without real motivation, trying to effect positive change in your life tends to be no more than an academic exercise. But what if there was some kind of shortcut, a game changer right in your own backyard? What if you had the potential to change your personal and professional life in a weekend?

It sounds too good to be true, right? Especially if, like me, you suffer from acutely healthy skepticism. But after talking to a breadth of folks about the leadership training at U & Improved, I’m ready to lock my skepticism in the closet and literally get with the program. As I hope you’ll read, you can actually bring your skepticism with you (almost everybody does) and the U & Improved process will send it packing anyway. Founder Jodi Low has infused her organization with a contagious passion. I’m not sure I’ve ever before interviewed so many sources for a business story who were unabashedly emotional and enthusiastic. For example, some of you may know Bill Lane, who works with North Scottsdale’s BNI chapters through his Referral Institute. He told me U & Improved leadership training was the single best thing he had done for his life. “The moment I graduated,” he said, “I knew that I had probably changed.”

The 27-year-old hotel, adjacent to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, is the first Arizona location for Orange Lake Resorts, which has 12 Holiday Inn Club Vacations in eight states and is one of the largest timeshare businesses in the country, reports BREW. The buyer paid $52 million cash to Resort Suites Scottsdale, of Canada, for the property, and is expected to reduce the total number of rooms, according to Phoenix Business Journal. U & Improved Ignites Dreams Unleashes Potential By Kimberly Hundley

Many students who complete leader and communication training go on to challenge themselves with “U the Warrior,” a class incorporating physical challenges and games to increase self-awareness, self-confidence, trust, motivation and teamwork.

…continued from page 19 Some enroll for personal development, eager to become better leaders and more effective professionals. Some go begrudgingly, sent by their employers to improve communication skills. Many sign on because a friend or family member wouldn’t shut up about how the program changed their lives for the better, and finally they were intrigued enough to take a class themselves or simply succumbed to the nagging. Regardless of how they got there, nearly all first-timers walk into U & Improved harboring some degree of skepticism. Almost none of them walks out that way. Faces weary but transcendent—not unlike parents holding a pink newborn— a knot of “U the Communicator” classmates clap and whoop greetings to supporters filing in for graduation in early June. One by one, the group members, garbed in black-and-white T-shirts, take a turn to stand at the front of the nondescript Scottsdale banquet room and share their experiences. These students, who vary in age from

world. It’s not just about me. It’s about my daughter and the world I want her to grow up in,” he says, and all over the room, people’s eyes begin to glisten. Low can’t take it anymore. She dashes tears from her eyes and snatches a tissue. It’s hard to believe the group has only known each other 2.5 days. Mike Binder, who has completed all three of U & Improved’s core programs—Leader, Communicator and Warrior—is in the audience to support his son’s graduation. He acknowledges the seeming improbability that students could be deeply impacted so quickly. “It is hard to believe,” he says. “It is. But then you see the difference it makes in other people, and you believe.”

Bitter Beginnings Low committed to teaching others how to improve their lives after she bounced back from a personal devastation almost six years ago. She and her husband ran a couple of businesses together from their Scottsdale home and had what seemed an idyllic life with their daughters, then ages

their early 20s to mid 60s, had signed on to develop communication tools and skills to improve their relationships. The course, like the “U the Leader” program, is intense and experience-based, starting on a Friday at 5 p.m. and finishing Sunday at 3 p.m. A woman begins by explaining that words can’t begin to describe what she’s feeling. “All week long you taught me about gratitude,” she continues, as her voice breaks. She reaches for the nearest box of tissues. A young man laughingly admits he and his wife came into the class pegging their fellow students “as a bunch of weirdos … and now I have 19 friends,” he finishes. U & Improved founder Jodi Low stands at the rear of the room, perched on her signature high heels, smiling proudly. Then a slight, dark-haired man gets up, his expression serious. He looks straight at his seated wife, who’s wrangling their toddler, and pledges to be a better husband. The declaration feels like a marriage proposal. “I’m going to take the tools, the lessons from here and create a win-win

Everything she thought she’d known and trusted was gone in an instant. Suddenly she was a single parent with no income and a mountain of business debt, and she had to figure out what to do next. “I was like, what am I going to create? …continues on page 22

When her business partner left to pursue another opportunity, Low brainstormed with several talented trainers she’d met along the way to create a leadership organization that emphasized experiential training. Unlike lecture-based programs, U & Improved would offer small classes where participants had to do just that— participate. “The way the class is written and designed is to lead students through a series of challenges and processes that allow them to use leadership behaviors in the classroom,” she says. “They are practicing it there … so in two weeks or a month later, they can apply those tools immediately. up with them, whether it’s their husband, child, boss, client or employee. “As we say in ‘U the Warrior,” Low says, “‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, include others.’”

Ripple Effect Airpark-area resident and former general manager at Acura North Scottsdale Jenny Lang was a “self-improvement” enthusiast, but she was skeptical that Low’s program would teach her anything new. Still, on the recommendation of one of her car customers, she took the leadership class—and was blown away. “One of the reasons the classes are so impactful is it is experiential-based training. You are involved, experiencing different situations based on the processes. There is absolutely no way to slide through these courses,” she says. “It requires your full involvement the entire time.” Not only did Lang end up taking every course, she sent her entire management staff (with one exception) through the communication program. “Having the team go through it changed the way we communicated and listened to each other,” she says. “It genuinely gave everyone the courage to work as a unit and not as individuals.” As far as benefits to the bottom line, one of Lang’s last years at Acura—just coming out of the recession—saw a 200 percent increase in earnings before taxes. Turnover, which often churns at sky-high levels in the industry, fell to just 17 percent as well. Low unveiled a sort of “master” class this spring, “U the Samurai,” which focuses on service to others. Lang says the experience shifted the “axis of my

are grateful too,” he says. Thanks to smartphones and the Internet, the membrane between work and home has never been thinner for employees, Jennings adds. “And if they’re happier at home, they’re happier at work.”

Rekindled Spirits Mike Binder flat out credits the U & Improved training for changing his life. Over the last few years, the former com-

munications director for the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce has navigated some difficult roadways and stressful situations. Today he’s enjoying a new endeavor as enrollment counselor at Grand Canyon University—as well as cherishing a close relationship with his son and daughter, both of whom he sent to Low’s program. …continues on page 24

little world.” “It was like putting on a new skin, having your eyes opened,” she explains. “I know it changed me to look at the world and the opportunities I have and to make it a better place.” Another employer who believes the U & Improved training is worth the investment is John Jennings, CEO of Safeguard in Scottsdale. “I’ve always been a firm believer in my business career that you can never train your people too much,” he says. One of Safeguard’s core values is doing what you say you’re going to do, which comes down to clear communication. Jennings has put about 30 employees through “U the Communicator” so far, with the goal of building trust and understanding between departments. The program has helped salvage several staffers who were talented in technical areas but on the bubble because of their poor communication skills. As a bonus, Jennings says, the graduates report they’re happier at home as well as more effective at work. “They walk in my office all the time and say thank you for doing that for me. They get so much out of it, they are very, very grateful, and I think their families

…continued from page 23 Mike’s 18-year-old daughter, Shannon Binder, is one of the youngest to have ever completed the “U the Communicator” course. Seeing the difference in her dad convinced her she should take the class. “A lot of things hadn’t been going right for him, and he took that in and blamed it on himself,” she says. “After ‘U the Leader’ I saw him being himself again, and it was just incredible. They brought him out of his shell, made him realize how awesome of a person he is. When he comes home from work now, he’s happy. Now we do family dinners and a lot of family-oriented things.” Shannon notes that, like her, many of her fellow students had been sent by somebody else, and the process is hard to explain to those who haven’t experienced it. Students are repeatedly told to “trust the process,” and those who do, get a lot out of it. As a high school student, Shannon noticed the training gave her more maturity in her communication with teachers and other adults. “Mostly what I got out of it was I spent way too much time on my phone and not

focusing on everyone around me and what’s going on around me,” she adds. “The class taught me to open up my eyes and open myself up.” The experience inspired her to write a report for school on how technology affects communication; she conducted an experiment in which 10 of her peers went without a phone for 24 hours. “I asked them to really focus on who was around them and make an effort to start a conversation with people they ordinarily wouldn’t,” she says. “A lot of them asked their families to have a dinner together and talk about their day. The feedback I got was awesome—they all said it was great.” U & Improved is now developing a curriculum specifically for teens, “U the Teen-Leader,” to give young people the tools to make them more successful in college and life. Shannon now regularly attends U & Improved graduations with her father— they go to encourage others and recharge their batteries. Many alumni also get together for activities such as charity fundraisers and even a book club, building a supportive community outside of class. Shannon has already signed up for

And they are made just like anything else, through hard work.” The 45 people of all ages and backgrounds chosen for the 29th Scottsdale Leadership class will bring that lesson to life in a ninemonth course of classwork, lectures, role-playing and community service. Members of the class, who learned of their selection just last month, will join 922 graduates of the program who serve in leadership roles for civic, business and philanthropic organizations throughout the Valley and state.

Scottsdale Leadership is recognized as one of the top five leadership programs in the country by the National Community Leadership Association. Eighty-four percent of the alumni have served on one or more nonprofit and civic boards, with 59 percent of those taking on the leadership role as board chair. Placement in the program is coveted; 52 people interviewed for 45 positions in Class 29. “We’re thrilled that so many strong applicants applied, yet we Class 28 member Chris Milliken receiving his graduation are limited by available space,” plaque from Executive Director George A. Martinez says Executive Director George and President Carol Damaso upon completion of the Martinez. In interviews, the panel nine-month Core Program. looks for people who can con-

vince them of their passion—for anything from work and family to personal interests like horseback riding or music. “Our No. 1 strategic goal is attract the passionate and committed,” Martinez says. “In Class 29, we will be admitting people representing a wide range of occupations, industries and businesses. We have entrepreneurs, architects, corporate executives, an equestrienne, engineers, people in public safety, former military, telecommunications executives, a former Eagle Scout—the list goes on and on.” Class 29 kicks off after Labor Day and runs through next May, with classes every other Friday and another four to six hours a week on group projects. It’s a big commitment for participants and their employers. “We offer very intense, full class days, with topics ranging from economic development to the arts, public safety, city and state government, and on and on,” Martinez says. “With limited time, we try to prioritize what can lead to the greatest impact. For the first time, with Class 29, we’ll have a full day devoted to technology, a deep dive into issues

like futures forecasting for social media, data privacy and security for individuals, small businesses and corporations. It’s highly relevant and immediately applicable.” Because participants spend so much time in class and working on projects, their employers must buy into the program. “The conversation I have with many employers is that Scottsdale Leadership can help you retain your best talent,” Martinez says. “More and more, particu-

Many Scottsdale businesses see the value, encouraging their employees to participate and often paying the $2,500 tuition. Class 27 graduate Andrea Krantiz, founder and lead consultant for Scottsdale’s iBiz, says she participated in Scottsdale Leadership because she believes in giving back to the city where she lives and owns a business. “I wanted to learn more about Scottsdale and enhance my leadership skills,” she says. “For employers, sending an employee through the core program is an investment in the company’s future leadership, and successful graduates of this program tend to be more aware and engaged. It’s also a way for the company to give back.” iBiz is an Airpark-area company that helps businesses with integrative business services, including access to the expertise of a professional controller at reasonable rates (integrativebizsolutions.com).

projects completed in the five years the program has been operating.” Participants form groups and identify a need in the community, then develop a project to address that need. Previous projects have included free dental screenings for kids, strengthening volunteer services for homebound or disabled seniors and a “Doggie Drive-In” to raise awareness of the needs of homeless families with pets. Members of the public can propose projects for future classes by contacting Emily Garzolini at Scottsdale Leadership via email (egarzolini@scottsdaleleadership.org) or phone (480-339-5908). Scottsdale Leadership’s goal isn’t simply to help people become good bosses or managers. Instead, the program helps participants develop attributes that can improve their own lives, and, in a ripple effect, the lives of others. “For us, leadership strongly implies and connotes helping others in a very fundamental way, whatever direction that may take,” Martinez says. “We offer life-changing opportunities for very diverse people to discover their

own style of leadership, what leadership means to them. We never get far from the expectation and value of giving back, of community service, using these new skills and discoveries about yourself, about your colleagues, about your community, to make the community a better place. “We’re proud of the fact that we have many examples of graduates doing really well in their careers, really well for their families, but equally important, doing really well for their communities.” Participants include people in different stages of their careers. “We have early career professionals—very young people—mid-career professionals, seasoned professionals and others considering retirement,” Martinez says. Several class members have been recent retirees who moved to Scottsdale. They have time and resources, but they don’t know many people and aren’t very familiar with the community and how they can best serve it, he adds. Scottsdale Leadership reached a milestone this year, growing the board from 18 to 23. The organization’s advisory

council is growing as well, with 41 members to date. “These are people who advise us and open a lot of doors for us. It also represents a source of input who are not alumni—people who have a stake in the success of the organization. Many of them are employers of our alums.”

George Martinez, Suzanne Walden-Wells and Joe Holmes interview a candidate for the upcoming 29th Scottsdale Leadership Class.

Martinez just marked a milestone of his own, his one-year anniversary with Scottsdale Leadership. Before becoming the organization’s executive director in May 2013, he was director of annual leadership giving for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. A Tucson native with bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona, he also graduated from the Harvard Management Development program and earned a doctorate in educational administration from New Mexico State University. Fundraising and increasing corporate partnership and participation are major focuses of his job, Martinez says. “It’s so important for us to hear from the community. If people want to work with us and lend support in a variety of different ways, we invite that more than ever, because we need support from the community to continue to produce great leaders who are doing great things for people. We’re on a shoestring, and growing community support is really huge for us. If people want to learn more and interact with us, I hope they’ll contact me directly.” 

Digital Marketing: What Works and What Doesn’t By Eric Olsen, Fasturtle

4 Airpark businesses give us the lowdown

I

had a chance to sit down with four Scottsdale Airpark small businesses to discuss their digital marketing efforts. I just had three simple questions: What’s working? What’s not working? How do you track your digital success?

Fairway Mortgage Nino Pascale 13835 N. Northsight Blvd., Suite 101 480-496-2880 www.fairwayscottsdale.com

What’s working? For our service and customer, the best thing we have done is utilize our blog and social media platforms to become the expert in our area. We provide consumers information on what a mortgage is, how to get a loan and what types of loans are available, and we help them understand what the best loan suggestions are for their current and future goals. By dispelling misinformation in the marketplace, we have become the expert in the field and the Scottsdale Airpark area. SEO - Our search engine optimization program helps promote our blog on Google, Yahoo and Bing and really takes the content we are creating online and positions it so when people in Scottsdale are looking for information on loans, we are coming up [in their search results]. This has increased visitors to our website and ultimately people viewing our information and contacting us. YouTube and blog - During the sales process we are able to really explain our service and reach more people in an efficient manner by using videos already created and posted on YouTube. We will send along links to our blog or YouTube where we can answer common questions and the potential client can view the information at their leisure. This has allowed us to become available 24/7. This sales tool is great for out-of-town clients to get to know our staff and review our resources. This technology has been great for our sales people to be able to

32 | Scottsdale Airpark News July 2014

send clients links to the blogs and video, to reinforcing Fairway Mortgage as the expert in the home loan process. Email marketing - Constant Contact has allowed us to stay in touch with our clients and their friends by providing us a channel to inform them about changes in the market, our company and potential opportunities. It also has allowed us to stay “top of mind” with a monthly newsletter.

What’s not working? Prospecting email marketing Purchasing a list or just blasting emails out to the masses. Our email campaigns need to be specific and have a call to action.

How do you measure? • • • •

Track calls coming in Monitor leads in CRM Ask people how they heard about us Fasturtle SEM [Search Engine Marketing] Reports • We would love to know more about where people come from; we need to ask deeper questions.

Conclusion At Fairway Mortgage we feel digital marketing is more of a way to reinforce the relationship and provide good information during the sales process. At Fairway we use SEO to bring eyes to the website and our blog, and we use YouTube and email marketing to shorten our sales cycle and continually build the relationship with our customers and prospects. Fairway Mortgage is a proud participant in Boot Campaign, offering mortgage-free homes for veterans. Nino Pascale also enjoys educating military personnel and veterans on new home buying as well as real estate investment.

Zone Athletic Performance Adam Mathis 15820 N. 84th St., Suite 100 480-998-9663 www.zoneap.com

What’s working? Website and Facebook - At Zone Athletic Performance, it begins with our website. We have integrated our class schedules and scheduling online by using an industry-leading software program, which is also mobile friendly. Our site has great information on our classes, our trainers and our owner (NFL ProBowl lineman Evan Mathis). Our website receives a lot of traffic from our Facebook page when we post videos, images and weight-loss related information. We drive a lot of new users and “everyday” moms and dads into our fitness classes by offering an introductory “5 FREE Zonefit classes” pass.

What’s not working? Being inconsistent - Our success comes with consistency—consistency with social media communication and email communication. We know it works when we are doing it, but it is difficult with a small staff to stay on top of our digital marketing efforts. For example, our email communication increases our referrals, but we are currently only sending it out every quarter.

How do you measure? • • • •

DesertMotive Automotive Tom Hail 8245 E. Butherus Drive, Suite 109 480-443-2600 www.autorepairnorthscottsdale.com

What‘s working? SEO - Getting ranked on Google organically and making sure our Google Plus account is set up correctly have been the best lead generators for us. We have worked with other companies and have done PPC (payper-click), but for a small budget our SEO program works the best. This has ensured that we are in the conversation when people

34 | Scottsdale Airpark News July 2014

are searching for auto repair services in the Scottsdale Airpark and surrounding areas. Email Marketing - Our email-marketing program has really helped us stay in touch with past clients, inform potential clients of discounted services, and it’s increased our referral clients because our email newsletter has been forwarded more than any direct mail campaign.

What’s not working? PPC- At DesertMotive Automotive we have worked with Google pay-per-click and have found that the calls we received were for the lowest service offerings and were [from prospects solely] interested in the lowest price. The only company that made money was Google.

How do you measure? • Client feedback • How many people bring in discounts from email marketing • Fasturtle SEM Reports

Conclusion At DesertMotive Automotive, we have

embraced digital marketing and how effective it can be, but want to make sure we put our money where it makes the most sense. Right now it makes sense for a solid SEO program and consistent email marketing.

Salt Creek Home and Office Furniture Jason Cameron 14202 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 110 480-483-3600 saltcreekhomefurniture.com

What’s working? SEO - Organic SEO traffic is generating new eyes to the website. Very specific searches on Google—such as “office desk Phoenix,” “furniture store Phoenix”—and SEO drive our lead generation. Retargeting - Remarketing to the people going to the website with banner advertisement on other websites. This program helps convert our visitors from browsers to buyers. [Note: Retargeting happens when a visitor goes to a website—such as saltcreekhomefurniture.com—and a cookie is down-

socialmedia loaded to their computer. After the cookie is downloaded, they will see that businesses’ advertisement naturally throughout the Internet on websites like Yahoo news, Fox News and local websites like AZcentral.com as they are surfing.] Social media - This doesn’t work for generating leads or business, but it supports our other marketing efforts. It’s good for additional exposure to existing customers—we’ll send along posts to Facebook and Twitter from our blog and show pictures of new merchandise.

10% OFF

Any single item. Must present ad. Cannot be combined with any other discounts. Expires: August 31, 2014

What’s not working? Email marketing - Too much time and not enough of a response from our past efforts. PPC - Google Adwords program did not work for generating real leads. We received a number of general sales calls from other vendors, not potential customers, once we started the campaign. The cost was very high, with no return. It was easy to track, so that was good, but the cost was very prohibitive.

How do you measure success? • • • • •

Conclusion At Salt Creek Home and Office Furniture, we have been serving the Scottsdale Airpark business community for over 20 years. We’re family owned and operated, offering first-class customer service and products at wholesale prices; we’re not a big box experience. Our digital marketing presence is very important to us, so we want to make sure that we are coming up on Google and other search engines when customers are searching for quality furniture at wholesale pricing. Our program is based on an expert-level SEO program and consistent retargeting.  Eric Olsen founded the Airpark’s Fasturtle, a website design and SEO firm, in 2000, providing business owners strategic digital marketing solutions. t’s July in Scottsdale … time to head to San Diego! If you’re a “Zonie” (what San Diegans call summer visitors from our sizzling state), then you are continuing a long tradition begun by our founders and forefathers. Over the decades, there have been many historic connections established between Scottsdale and San Diego that reach beyond a vacation week at the beach. Despite the 362 miles between us, the two metro areas share many commonalities, including tourism, golf and a thriving bio-medical research industry. Enjoy these historic links and similarities between our two destinations: • Founders and namesakes of places and streets in San Diego and Scottsdale date back to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Mexican-American War and the Civil War in the 1800s. Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell (namesake of the McDowell Mountains, Fort McDowell, McDowell Road, etc.) and Maj. Gen. Rosecrans (namesake of San Diego’s Fort Rosecrans and Rosecrans Boulevard in Point Loma) both attended and taught at West Point during the 1830s-1840s, and both were battle …continues on page 38

Scottsdale’s founder Winfield Scott served as an infantry captain during the Civil War. Arizona Canal builder W.J. Murphy likely served under Gen. Palensky’s 2011 book, Wyatt Earp in San Diego: Life after Tombstone, Earp and his wife, Josie, “visited Coronado Beach frequently during their time in San Diego. rememberwhen

• Scottsdale’s founder and namesake, Maj. Winfield Scott, and his wife, Helen, made an annual trek across the desert to the coast in their senior years (circa 1900-1910) to visit their daughter Minnie Albright and her husband, a U.S. Army brigadier general stationed in San Diego. Reverend Scott started a Baptist congregation in the Normal Heights neighborhood of San Diego, and Helen took up the project to get the church built after Scott died in October 1910. The church was called Scott Memorial Baptist Church until 2007, when it was renamed Grace Church San Diego. Although he died while living in Scottsdale, Winfield and Helen Scott are buried in the Grand Army of the Republic (the Civil War veterans group) section of the Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego, beside their daughter and her husband, Gen. Albright. • No one ever seems to be in a hurry to get from the balmy beaches of San Diego back home to fiery Scottsdale, but there was actually a “San Diego to Phoenix Road Race” in October 1912. Sanctioned by the auto club, Maj. Gen. Barry Goldwater and his family were life-long Zonies. His memoirs describe adventurous car trips across the desert with his mother, Josephine, at the wheel. • During World War II, John Swope was the field manager of Thunderbird II airfield, now the Scottsdale Airport and Airpark. He was a star player with the Boston Red Sox between 1938 and 1960. He played his last two spring training seasons with the BoSox at Scottsdale Stadium in 1959 and 1960, delighting fans at the stadium and at

• For several years, Scottsdale’s Sunburst Resort (now FireSky) was part of San Diego-based Atlas Hotels, which included five resort hotels in the San Diego area. • Frank Lloyd Wright married Olgivanna in Rancho Santa Fe (north of San Diego). Although Wright himself did not design any structures that were actually built in San Diego, his son John did. Wright’s legacy is also evident throughout San Diego in projects designed by Taliesin-trained architects. • Torrey Pines Golf Course, opened in 1957, was designed by architects William P. “Billy” Bell and William Francis Bell. If those names sound familiar, Billy Bell also designed Encanto Park, Arizona Biltmore, Mesa Country Club and Papago golf courses here in the Valley. Two of Bell’s best courses—Torrey Pines and Papago— shared a similar phenomenon, which some called “the Line.” As generally affordable municipal courses, tee times have been highly prized by residents of San Diego and Scottsdale/Phoenix, who have often queued up in their cars well before dawn in order to get on the courses. Famed golf course architect Rees Jones renovated the Torrey Pines South Course in 2001, followed by numerous upgrades before Torrey Pines’ South Course hosted the U.S. Open in June 2008. • Both San Diego and Scottsdale have laid claim to golf great Phil Mickelson. He grew up in San Diego, and his family lives there. He attended Arizona State University, played on ASU’s golf team, and considered Grayhawk Golf Course

Mickelson and a partner also acquired the operating rights to McDowell Mountain Golf Club in 2011 and oversaw numerous property enhancements. • Many Scottsdale-area residents entered the military via boot camp at the former Naval Training Center (now a mixed use area called Liberty Station) or the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot (which still graduates a class of new Marines just about every Friday). Others have served at the myriad of U.S. Navy or Marine bases in the San Diego area, from the Naval Amphibious Base and Naval Air Station on Coronado Island, all the way north to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside. • Coronado Island is a summer destina-

tion for scores of Scottsdale residents. Isn’t it a coincidence that famed resort Hotel Del Coronado opened in 1888, the very year that Winfield Scott homesteaded Scottsdale? • Both Coronado and Scottsdale had visits from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The 26-year-old Prince of Wales, accompanied by Lord Mountbatten, stopped at a social event at the Hotel Del in 1920, enroute to a tour of the Pacific. At the time, Wallis (the future Duchess of Windsor) was married to naval aviator Lt. j.g. Win Spencer, who was stationed at the Coronado Naval Air Station; they lived near The Del. After becoming King Edward VIII, then abdicating to marry “the woman I love,” the Duke and his Duchess of Windsor spent many vacations in the United States. In the late 1950s, the famous couple stayed at the Arizona Biltmore, where the Duke played golf and they both visited Henry and Clare Boothe Luce. The royal couple came to Scottsdale to dine at the Lulu Belle restaurant on the northeast corner of Main Street and Scottsdale Road.

• Over the years, Scottsdalians have participated in San Diego events such as the annual Over the Line tournament on Fiesta Island, the Rock and Roll Marathon, the Holiday Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl. D-backs fans travel to PETCO Park to see their team play the Padres; Padres fans come to the Phoenix area in March to attend Padres’ spring training. • Scottsdale restaurants that have found success in San Diego include Fox’s True Foods and Paul Fleming’s P.F. Chang’s and Fleming’s steakhouse. Valley-based My Sister’s Closet upscale consignment stores now has two locations in the San Diego area. Celebrate Summer with Blues, Brews and BBQ at Proof

P

roof, an American canteen, is welcoming summer with the return of the “Backyard Barbecue” series, showcasing family-style barbecue, live music and local Arizona beer. Held every other Friday in July and August, there are plenty of opportunities to join in the family-friendly fun. “Nothing spells summer like a classic barbecue,” says Executive Sous Chef Jesse Hansen, who crafted the down-home menu for the series and is the mastermind behind Proof’s popular fare. “We are building upon the success from last year with an expanded menu, and an emphasis on live music and local draft beer. Spend the day by the pool, then ‘come as you are’ with flip-flops and a T-shirt and enjoy a relaxed evening with us.” The barbecue menu rotates periodically, but might include mouthwatering starters such as homemade cornbread hush puppies, mixed greens and charred corn, served up family style. Then, guests can enjoy selections such as barbecue ribs, honeygarlic grilled chicken, pulled pork and shrimp skewers to share. Sides include baked beans, dill-cucumber salad with feta cheese, and cherry tomatoes mixed with Vidalia onions. For dessert, a slice of peach strawberry pie or other seasonal sweets cap the meal. Arizona beers will take center stage for the series. Featured offerings include the signature Proof Pilsner, Mother Road Black IPA and Fate seasonal draft. All beers will be offered for $6. Additionally, Jared Blackstone will perform each night of the series, playing popular tunes to accompany the casual evening. The barbecue is located out on Proof’s patio from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on July 4 and 18; and Aug. 1, 15 and 29. The cost is $38 per person, and reservations are strongly recommended. Reservations: 480-513-5088.

Proof, an American canteen, debuted fall 2012 at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale. The restaurant presents home-style comfort fare sourced from the 50 states, and features breakfast, lunch and dinner. Menu choices include fried green tomatoes, Arizona’s own gumbo, and chicken and waffles with bacon and bourbon syrup. An old-fashioned soda fountain serves up nostalgic milkshakes, malts and floats. Guests can take in the outdoors from every angle with walls that open to views of Pinnacle Peak and extensive patio dining. Televisions, games and a bustling bar bring buzzing energy to the restaurant on a nightly basis. 

Fired Pie Fires Up 2nd Airpark Locale Eatery plans state expansion

L

ast year, locally owned and operated Fired Pie, jumped into the dining scene in the Valley as the first fast-casual pizza restaurant. Last month marked the opening of the company’s fifth location, off Greenway-Hayden Loop and Scottsdale Road in the former Pellini’s Italian restaurant space. This is the second Airpark locale for Fired Pie, which has been serving up pies on Northsight Boulevard and Raintree Drive since December. The eatery plans to operate eight store locations by fall. A downtown Phoenix location is set to open at the Collier Center off Second and Jefferson streets and another location will open in downtown Tucson on

the corner of Congress and Broadway. The eighth restaurant will open in Ahwatukee Foothills at the Towne Center complex off Ray Road and I-10. “We are excited to launch in a new market, as we feel there is a lot of growth in Tucson,” says co-founder Doug Doyle. “We are excited to expand to the southern half of the state.” Fired Pie allows you to take on the role of chef by picking and choosing your own type of dough, sauce and toppings. The “sophisticated-yet-affordable” pizzeria also offers build-your-own salads. The concept behind the restaurant was born from the minds of the trio of cofounders, who worked together for more than 15 years, rising through

the ranks of California Pizza Kitchen. They found themselves brainstorming about the art of making a great pizza pie: dough, sauce, cheese, fresh herbs, meats, sourcing local and organic ingredients—and knew with the right precision, they would create and build a pizza empire. “On any given night you will see one of us working behind the counter,” says co-founder Rico Cuomo. “We are hands-on and proud of what we do and what we have been able to accomplish thus far.” Fired Pie plans on opening six more locations next year. For more information, menus, hours and locations, visit firedpie. com or facebook.com/FiredPie. 

Hi-Health debuts ‘store within a store’ concept

A

irpark-based specialty nutritional product retailer Hi-Health has undergone a major redesign of many of its retail locations to include “stores within a store.” These new customer-friendly stores mix technology and design to make finding the right health and nutrition products easier than ever. A number of Hi-Health's 44 Valley stores will transition to the new store design over the next 10 to 22 months. “We are looking forward to rolling out the new design concept to all Hi-Health locations throughout Arizona in the near future,” says Mitch Chalpin, president of Hi-Health. “For over 40 years Hi-Health has promoted a healthy and active lifestyle, and the new design concept is just one more step in our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for our customers.” Hi-Health focused on four of the industry’s leading manufacturers to implement this project including MusclePharm, CytoSport, Dymatize and Hi-Health’s exclusive brand, XRated. The design concept offers customers a unique shopping experience enabling customers to shop a variety of products offered by a manufacturer in one section rather than spread throughout the store. The redesign also includes technological upgrades including several touch-screen computers, so customers can easily access information about their favorite products or research questions they have on a particular health or fitness related topics. Michelle Bell, national brand manager for CytoSport, a leading brand in the sports nutrition industry since 1998 says, “CytoSport is extremely excited to be a part of this innovative retailing concept. Giving our consumers the option to purchase our products by category, as well as having visibility into our entire brand offering is going to be very convenient for the customer.” Hi-Health Corp, established in 1972 in Scottsdale, is a health food and supplement retailer in Arizona. Hi-Health serves the Arizona community through 44 brickand-mortar stores and is available online at www.hihealth.com. 

Vanguard Vastly Grows Airpark Presence Expects to add another 62 to workforce by year’s end By Kimberly Hundley

V

anguard upped its Scottsdale Airpark presence this year with a newly refurbished 145,000-squarefoot space on Pima Road, just a mile from the main campus on Raintree Drive and Northsight Boulevard.

To mark the official June opening of the company’s new site at 15111 N. Pima Road, Vanguard executives gave city of Scottsdale staffers and council members a tour as company employees enjoyed a breakfast reception: Mike Bray; Scottsdale Councilwoman Linda Milhaven; Phyllis Bruner; Christian Green of Scottsdale economic development; Fritz Behring, Scottsdale city manager; Geoff Schumway, AZ Commerce Authority, VP business expansion; Danielle Casey, city of Scottsdale, economic development director; Jennifer Rivera; Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane; Christine Malloy; Scottsdale Councilwoman Suzanne Klapp; Mike Manfre; Deborah Akinsipe; Stephanie Scher; Julie Oliver.

The Pennsylvania-based investment management company—celebrating its 20th anniversary in Arizona this year— intends to continue its recent Scottsdale hiring spree into the foreseeable future. This year alone, Vanguard added 296

employees, with plans to create and fill another 62 positions by January. Last year, nearly 500 came on board to handle company growth. “We are looking for people who have a passion for financial services, strong invest…continues on page 52

Of Vanguard’s approximate 2,320 Scottsdale employees, 540 now work from the new Pima offices; the remainder are at Vanguard’s main campus on Northsight Boulevard and Raintree Drive.

…continued from page 51 ment acumen and relationship-management skills,” says Deborah Akinsipe, Vanguard’s director of human resources in Arizona. A variety of positions will be available, from entry level to financial planners as well as financial-advisor team leaders. Candidates should possess a strong “client-first philosophy,” says Akinsipe.

Scottsdale is the company’s secondlargest U.S. operation, and home to about 20 percent of its domestic workforce. In 1994, Vanguard expanded outside Pennsylvania to regional bases in Scottsdale and in North Carolina. Globally, Vanguard employees more than 14,000. Akinsipe says Vanguard uses a multichannel approach to tap the job pool, recruiting from local colleges and universities, coordinating with Valley-based Career Connectors (careerconnectors.org) and diversity groups, and spreading the word via social media, Careerbuilder.com and the company’s own website. “We’re very optimistic about Scottsdale,” says Akinsipe. “We see a lot of migration into this region—specifically from the Midwest—so we’re very optimistic about growing our workforce locally and in the region.” Vanguard prides itself on offering a robust training program, including paid training for security licenses necessary for certain positions, she adds.

New Digs While Vanguard declined to disclose

how much it spent prepping the Pima locale, the company obviously made a major investment in the “mini-campus” down the road from the 471,000-squarefoot, four-building main site on Raintree. Amenities in the revamped space include break areas sporting slick, modern decor, a cafeteria/café complete with a 24-hour “grab and go” kiosk, and a fitness facility with trainer. Construction began in January, and staff members have transferred to the Pima site in phases as each floor was completed. “Employees are thrilled—I don’t think anyone is complaining about moving,” Akinsipe says with a laugh. “It’s also a great environment for our clients.” The Pima building has the capacity to eventually hold 740 “crew”—the name Vanguard uses for staff—and is home to Vanguard’s “institutional” business lines, mainly serving 401K clients.

Amenities in the Pima building include a café, attractive break areas and a fitness center.

Vanguard fosters financial literacy through a program called My Classroom Economy, which provides free tools online for teachers, grades K-12 (parents are also welcome to access them). Vanguard “crew” also volunteer to serve as ambassadors to actively meet with teachers and school administrators to share the program. As of December 2013, the program had touched 2,000 Arizona students, according to Vanguard. Materials may be downloaded at www. myclassroomeconomy.org, which also has video resources.

Why pay your taxes decades in advance?

To Roth or Not to Roth By Thomas K. Brueckner, Strategic Asset Conservation

I

IRS doesn’t charge you interest on this “loan,” they merely promise to catch up with you later. And it’s actually even better than that. The IRS can’t make you take money out of the account taxably until April 1 of the year after the year in which you turn 70½. When you do so, the requirement is that you withdraw roughly 3.7 percent of your prior year-end value that first year, leaving the other 96.3 percent of your account to “triple compound” for another year. Here’s an example: If you had a $1 million IRA, and took out $37,000—withholding 22 percent of that ($8,140) for state and federal income taxes, you’d get to keep the remaining $28,860. But remember, the other $963,000 is allowed to “triple compound” for yet another year.

f you don’t have to pay your taxes for decades, why pay them all in one year now? The “Roth conversion” can be seen as beneficial with the assumption that taxes are certain to be higher in the future and are thus “on sale” today. While there are instances where a Roth conversion may make sense for certain people, for others, taking advantage of options that exist within a traditional IRA may be more advantageous. I believe it is important to give you context as well as updated, commonly held guidelines on whether and when you should consider converting some or all of an IRA account into a taxfree Roth IRA. The Context: In any IRA account, the owner enjoys the benefits of what is known as “Triple Compounding.” You earn interest (or capital gains/dividends) on your principal, interest on your interest, and interest on the taxes you didn’t have to pay—money belonging to the IRS that was allowed to remain in the account, making you more money each year. Let’s not understate this benefit: The

The Argument: The proponent of Roth conversion argues that in order to avoid the $8,140 in taxes (less than 1 percent of the account value) and deny yourself the ongoing benefit of triple compounding over the remaining 15 to 20 years of your life, you should instead pay

point forward, your new Roth IRA would grow tax free, not just during your lifetime, but during that of your heirs as well. Paying $340,000 in taxes just to avoid paying $8,140 in taxes had better yield some large benefit for the entire exercise to have been worth it. When and Whether: So when does Roth conversion make sense and under what circumstances? • When you don’t or won’t need the money for your own retirement. • When you’d rather pay income taxes on it at 28 percent to 35 percent than have your heirs pay estate taxes on it at up to 55 percent (only applicable to a net worth in excess of $10 million). • When you have enough funds outside of the IRA to pay the income taxes with, ideally spread out over several years. • When the IRA owner is under 58 years of age. • When you are certain that you’ll be in a substantially higher tax bracket once retired than the one you’re in during the years you intend to convert. • When you are certain that your heirs won’t be tempted to touch the money for at least 10 to 25 years, thus giving the potential for the tax-free growth an opportunity to prove itself. It’s this last caveat that is often the deal breaker. Seldom will one’s heirs exercise such restraint when needs arise (college tuition, mortgage payoff or a job loss after 50) or opportunities such as buying a vacation property or an exotic car present themselves. An account that grows tax free “forever” only does its owner good if they don’t spend most of it before forever arrives. “But your mom and dad would have wanted us to enjoy this, honey.” For this, you paid $340,000 in taxes decades before they were due? Sadly, in most cases, yes.  Thomas K. There is no ‘I’ in team, but there should be! The Science of Self By Ron J. Bonnstetter & Bill J. Bonnstetter, Target Training International

S

elf-awareness is the No. 1 predictor of executive success, according to a 2010 Cornell University study. But how do you gain these self-reflective insights? Your spouse might suggest you simply listen to their advice. In all seriousness, there is growing evidence that selfawareness is crucial to your success. Let’s take a moment and identify some of the major components we need to know about ourselves to be effective communicators. All of us bring our own set of professional skills, education and intelligence to the job. But we have other personal attri-

butes that play an even bigger role in our daily lives, and many people don’t fully grasp their importance. These include the why of what we do, our motivators, and how we exhibit these attributes through our behaviors, plus a set of soft skills that are crucial, depending on the task. Dean Newlund, CEO of Mission Facilitators International Inc., suggests an honest self-assessment is required to gain these insights, followed by careful reflection and sharing what we’ve learned with others. Let’s examine this process in the context of team building.

Secret to Team Building Businesses constantly pull people together to work on specific projects. Most often, the criteria for team selection is based on subject matter expertise or administrative roles. Rarely is time spent on identifying the soft skills among members and how this will ultimately impact the team’s outcome. This approach reminds me of the million-dollar story. If you want to have a million dollars stashed away for the future, the first thing you need to do is get a million dollars. Obviously this silly

statement is missing a step. How do you get the million? Team building has a similar missing link that may not be as obvious. Each team member brings to the team much more than knowledge of a particular subject. They possess unique behaviors, motivators and even a set of soft skills that can make or break a team’s end product. Research has shown that taking the time to ensure a balance in behavioral styles within a team ensures that each crucial step from creation to completion is covered. To achieve well-rounded results for any project, the four primary functions of a team should be represented by the team members. These include: 1. A conductor who is a direct, resultsoriented agent of change with a sense of urgency. 2. An analyzer who is a critical listener, concerned with quality and attention to detail. 3. A supporter who is adaptable, steady and accommodating. 4. A promoter, who projects confidence and explains away any concerns.

Engaging Your Personal Team of Professional Development Consultants By Eric Stoddard, Northcentral University

hen it comes to professional development, it’s easy to forget an immediately available resource that’s everywhere around us— our colleagues. We spend all day, every day with our co-workers. They know every move we make, and how we’ll react in every situation. They often know our strengths and our weaknesses even better than we do. Yet it’s rare that we create environments in which our peers can share that knowledge with us. In fact, it’s likely they won’t tell us

a thing about how we can improve, until we genuinely and repeatedly let them know that we’re open to hearing it. In What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, Marshall Goldsmith suggests that we often mistakenly assume that because we’ve arrived at this point in our careers, every behavior we demonstrated along the way must have contributed to our success. But what we perceive as a strength may be a deficiency our leaders decided to live with when they promoted us! Without feedback, it’s difficult to understand our

weaknesses. Imagine the power that lies in the ability to truly see our own weaknesses and learn, as author Marcus Buckingham would say, to “manage around” them.

al development. We’re now reading The OZ Principle, whose authors advocate asking for candid feedback to better understand how to be truly accountable for results. In his book Winning, former General Electric CEO Jack Welch discusses the importance of candid feedback, but notes that only 20 percent of those he surveyed received “honest, straight-betweenthe-eyes feedback” even once per year! Quicken Loans, America’s largest online lender which also has a substantial presence in Scottsdale, has managed to create a brilliant culture of feedback sharing. Bill Emerson, the CEO, often says, “The person who tells you that you have spinach in your teeth is your friend.” Yet an environment of feedback sharing doesn’t naturally exist. As Welch pointed out, we’re taught from a young age to “soften bad news” or “make nice about awkward subjects.” The good news is we can create this environment with those immediately around us. Why don’t we do this? It’s scary! We know we have things we can improve, but like ostriches with our heads in the sand, we sometimes don’t want to face reality. As I discussed in my book, 30 Pounds in 40 Days, we’re often our own biggest enemy. That being the case, would you rather have the chance to fight that enemy, knowing whom you’re up against, or do you want to keep your head comfortably in the sand? Let’s face our vulner-

abilities, and embrace the opportunity to improve! We can start by simply asking the question, “How can I get better,” and then repeating this process, meeting the answers with open-mindedness and absence of judgment every time. Let’s check our egos at the door, let our guard down and sincerely ask for feedback from those around us. Through this sincerity and sharing, we can build trusting relationships while making strides in our professional development. So do read the books on professional development. Attend the workshops! Pursue your next degree. Just don’t forget along the way that you have your own personal growth-consultants sitting right next to you, potentially holding the key to unlocking the next step in your career. The advice we need is everywhere around us … but we won’t hear it until we stop to ask for it.  Eric Stoddard is the author of 30 Pounds in 40 Days, and the senior vice president of the NCU Experience at Northcentral University, in the Greater Airpark. JULY Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success. ARIES 3/21-4/19 July’s hyper energy may have you catching up with matters that were almost impossible to complete during June’s ups and downs. Open old files and reconnect with clients, especially after the 11th. Real estate and home-related services are positively highlighted. Midmonth is a good time to hatch a financial plan for the summer and fall.

enthusiasm is high and you easily find solutions to challenges that lie ahead. Why? Because Jupiter enters your own sun sign the middle of the month. Ask Cancer how lucky they were the past 12 months. It’s your turn now, Leo. If you are looking for a promotion, you’ll get it. If you want to switch careers, it just may happen between now and July 2015.

TAURUS 4/20-5/20 Plans you revamped in June are bringing welcome changes and a more flexible agenda. Communication is important. Use all forms of networking this month. Waste no time—the first two weeks are particularly favorable—if planning an expansion that covers a lot of territory, and make sure to follow through. Meetings could yield long-term commitments.

VIRGO 8/23-9/22 Expect to work a little harder as you start out the month, thanks to erratic schedule changes caused by the shifting planets. July requires you to repeatedly adapt. Crisscrossing energies bring frustration to that well-organized mind of yours. A good time to submit an idea or make a presentation is the week of the 22nd.

GEMINI 5/21-6/21 The wait is over. July’s developments make up for June’s losses. Opportunities that were held back will reopen. Good news arrives. You are mentally on target this month and have success selling yourself and others. Whatever offers present themselves seem to be lasting. Money matters require you to set up a weekly game plan (get ready for a busy period that starts on the 17th). CANCER 6/22-7/22 That lucky streak that began in July 2013 is about to say adieu. Channel the fruits of those past breaks into your finances and earning potential. A brainstorming period begins around the 17th and runs nonstop for another year. Put all areas of creative marketing into play and watch what develops. You have a 12-month window to create goals. Jupiter moves into your sun sign, and others will respond to your upbeat approach. LEO 7/23-8/22 Ready, set, go! Leave no opportunities unexplored. Your

66 | Scottsdale Airpark News July 2014

LIBRA 9/23-10/22 Why wait to implement fresh ideas? You are at a creative peak this month, and the week of the 12th has the best potential for rapid progress. Socializing (your forte) is being accented for the months ahead. That hard work and patience pays off now. Take advantage of Mars while it’s still in your own sign, giving you the push you need to take action. SCORPIO 10/23-11/21 Aggression won’t work in your favor this month. You have put the last 21⁄2 years of restrictions and challenges to rest and by midmonth are ready to march forward. Your professional life becomes more active. Expect opportunities to come your way and the months ahead to be progressive. You have more sayso in the work environment. Take time off after the 21st. SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 You finally have time to explore new areas of work and technical know-how. The shifting planets relate to changing circumstances in your work life. July is just how you like it: full of excit-

ing turnabouts. Expect to meet with approvals and financial breaks. This trend continues through 2014 and has an effect on your personal life. You get a much-needed psychological lift. Travel is likely. CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 Welcome to July, when interacting with others will gobble most of your personal time. The last 12 months have given you a chance to expand your circle and form beneficial partnerships. These relationships now offer a solid base of operation. Get out and make your presence known, especially the week of the 20th, and you’ll have cause to celebrate by month’s end. AQUARIUS 1/20-2/19 You may find yourself letting go of clients, contacts or plans you once thought were valuable. A new job offer, position or major change in the workplace could be in the offing, and you’ll have time to contemplate your choices. The main focus on the months ahead will be on others—interacting with groups of like-minded individuals. You may alter your appearance or demeanor. Circle the 26th. PISCES 2/20-3/20 You can easily break your nonproductive habits this month. Once Jupiter goes into the sign of Leo, you experience a surge of excitement and creativity. Midmonth brings the right people at the right time for pitching your ideas. Let others know what you have to offer. Get out of your own way and attend functions and classes. Get a new tool to work with! 

Pinnacle Aviation Adds 5 Aircraft to Fleet of Private Jets

P

innacle Aviation has added five aircraft to its Scottsdale Airport-based luxury charter fleet, which will now be 11 aircraft. A super mid-cabin Gulfstream G200, three mid-cabin aircraft (including a Citation XLS and two Hawker 800XPs), and a Citation CJ3 have joined the Pinnacle Aviation fleet. Passenger amenities in the aircraft include a full entertainment system with Airshow, satellite phone and a forward galley; the Gulfstream G200 and Citation CJ3 also offer complimentary Wi-Fi. Pinnacle Aviation credits recent fleet growth to the company’s strong flight operations and safety programs. “Our entire fleet, including our charter aircraft, is supported by a dedicated flight operations team and a safety management system that has earned us ARG/US

Platinum and IS-BAO Stage 2 Registration,” says Curt Pavlicek, CEO for Pinnacle Aviation. “The continuous momentum generated by our commitment to our owners has resulted in significant fleet growth during the first quarter of this year.” Pinnacle Aviation Director of Business Development Orin Anderson says, “The addition of a number of jets over the last few months has significantly expanded our domestic and international travel capabilities, offering our clients the luxury of choice when chartering an aircraft for business or pleasure.” For the last 25 years, each aircraft in Pinnacle Aviation’s predominately latemodel charter fleet has been meticulously maintained, managed and flown by Pinnacle Aviation crew members. “We take great pride in the trust and

confidence that our owners place in Pinnacle Aviation and our flight operations and safety management teams. Our growth trend is on pace to continue through the summer and fall as we continue to expand our charter portfolio, offering our clients even more options within our versatile charter fleet,” says Pavlicek.

About Pinnacle Aviation Pinnacle Aviation was started in 1988 as an aircraft sales and acquisitions company. It quickly grew into a full-service company, providing aircraft sales and acquisitions as well as full management, maintenance and charter services. Pinnacle Aviation is headquartered in Scottsdale and has operations in Hawaii, California, Arizona and New Jersey. The charter company provides services domestically and internationally. 
