Chefs showcase their best to entice new diners
L
ute Olson is viewed as one of college basketball’s greatest coaches, and in Tucson, where he built his legacy at the University of Arizona, there was no bigger celebrity. His former players, though, view him as the patriarch of a family bigger than basketball. For Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, the basketball court became home and Olson became a mentor after Kerr’s father was killed during his freshman year at Arizona by Islamic extremists in Beirut. “The thing that kept me going was playing basketball,” Kerr said. “The team became a second family and he really looked after me.” Memories of Olson’s accomplished journey remain vivid. Aug. 27 marked the two-year anniversary of his death. Olson’s attentiveness and tough-love shepherding of his players from adolescence to adulthood were evident long before he arrived in Tucson. here’s plenty to keep the family busy this month in Marana. In fact, just about every day in September there’s something to do, from birding at El Rio Preserve to pee wee soccer. Of special interest is a guided horseback ride through the Tortolita Mountains on Oct. 1. Participants don’t need their own horse, nor do they need to be experienced riders. Beginners are welcome. Register early as the September ride filled up fast. There will also be a ride in November and another in December. To register for any of these activities, visit maranaaz.gov or call 520-382-1950.
