ongtime Marana Unified School District Governing Board member Dan Post is being remembered as a tireless supporter of the organization. Post, 83, died July 15 after serving the district for

f students can read at or above the third-grade level, they are four times more likely to graduate high school, according to Jill Cordova, Marana Unified School District’s elementary literacy coordinator. Yet, teaching them to read and write is not a natural occurrence, like learning to eat or walk. “If you put kids in front of a book, they’re not going to learn to read,” Cordova said. “You give them the piece of paper and pen, they’re not going to learn to write. You have to actually build the connections in the brain; it’s a difficult thing to instruct.” These skills are milestones that MUSD is prioritizing in its districtwide literacy campaign.
