tanding at the microphone at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland, may be nerve-wracking for students, but for parents watching their children on stage after months of preparation it’s “emotionally gut-wrenching.” That’s how Frank Opoku-Appoh described the experience of watching his daughter, Karen Baaba Opoku-Appoh, one of three Arizona spellers competing in this year’s national bee, as she took her turn on stage over the last two

arana is well known for its rapid growth in the past decade. But in the northern part of town, strips of open land freckle the area with undeveloped lots. The Economic Development and Tourism Department is working to fill some of these spaces with what Economic Development Specialist Ryan Wissmann designated as third-place type businesses. They can include gyms, entertainment venues, libraries and other spots residents frequently visit. “In essence, it’s somewhere that’s not your home or work where you can go to relax and have a good time,” Wissmann said. “Up in Northwest Marana, there are very few of those third-place type businesses. An increase in the number of them contributes to a higher quality of place and quality of life.” Businesses are interested in locating to Northwest Marana, while residents need
