Stand-up Guy BY DIANE MEEHL Sean Hoy admits it: He’s no good at accounting, and he had a cubicle job for all of a week. Early in his life, the consummate “class clown” performed his own talk shows beginning in second grade in the school library. He’s still doing that today, playing master of ceremonies, event host and even private bartender. Hoy has emceed several Lovin’ Life After 50 Expos, where seniors mix it up with vendors and service providers to learn about the various resources available to them. He reports the gigs are great ones. “I love the crowd,” he says. “They’re just so appreciative of a smile. You can see they appreciate the energy we bring to them. You can really make someone’s day there.” Just don’t expect him to stand onstage and tell jokes at the expos. Burning off his infectious, relentless energy, he’ll be roaming the room and interviewing folks at the booths. “A long time ago, I learned that making people laugh wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about how funny I could be. It was about talking to people. Now I incorporate the audience into my show. Nothing’s more funny than a secretary who has something to say about the boss,” he shares. “I just hold the microphone (or wireless mic) and I let the guests be the stars,” he says.

Like most “aha” moments, it was a tough one onstage that shaped the biggest lesson he learned in his career: to put people first. “I was emceeing an event at the Arizona Humane Society, where I do a lot of work,” he says. “They wanted us to come and do comedy, and I thought it would be so cute and fun, puppies and all that. “But the crowd was so somber, and people in the audience were crying. Someone pulled me aside to remind me it was

Tools of the Trade

A native Arizonan, Arizona State graduate and one of four children, Hoy started out as a cartoonist, something he’s still passionate about. The editorial bone is in his blood, he says. His father was an accomplished photojournalist, whose credits include a post as White House photographer spanning several administrations beginning in 1963. (In fact, his parents met at the Washington Post.) Hoy worked the stand-up comedy circuit at lofty marquees, including the Comedy Store in Southern California, and the Scottsdale Improv. But it was his work drawing pictures that led to his real start juggling his craft as a cartoonist with emceeing fundraisers, corporate parties and other events. “The people at Ames (Drywall Finishing Tools & Services) asked me to draw a character for them. Then, they said, ‘That’s you.’” He got to play the character for several years, fortuitous for a man who claims comedy is his “tool” wherever he’s working. Hoy says he enjoys working for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Arizona Humane Society and other charitable causes. landed a “man on the street” gig for local legendary DJ Dave Pratt’s radio show and now television production. And he’s got a talk show dubbed Hoylarious, on which he emulates some of his heroes, including Johnny Carson and Jimmy Fallon. “I admire their laid-back likeability,” Hoy says he has “a happy center.” he says. “I’m not really into being put on the spot when people say, ‘Hey, funny boy, make me laugh!’” Once he played emcee for a casino event with a Goodfellas theme for RSC Rentals. “I got to wear this cool tux, and I threw a couple of horse heads in bed just to get into character,” he quips. Clearly he can be funny on demand, but he still prefers to let the audience come up with the best lines. He’s not one of those comics, he says, whose brand of comedy masks a deeper sadness. “Not me. Caring for Caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month BY NIKI D’ANDREA People born between 1945 and 1965 have been called different generational terms, most familiarly “Baby Boomers.” But now, many people in the Boomer age group are finding themselves under another label: the “Sandwich Generation.” The term has nothing to do with what they eat. The Sandwich Generation consists of those people who find themselves caring for both their underage children and their aging parents simultaneously. It’s a group growing in tandem with the expanding percentage of “family caregivers” – those who provide care for an aging or disabled loved one, free of charge, and often free of outside resources. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that approximately 70 percent of people age 65 and older will need some form of long-term care. And a recent AARP study shows that 87 percent of adults age 65 and older want to “age in place” and stay in their own homes, rather than be moved into a care facility. There are two options for people who want to provide in-home care for their elders: Hire a company to provide it, or be the caregivers themselves. According to the Arizona Office on Aging, family caregivers provide more than 80 percent of all uncompensated care in the state.

But caring for an older adult (or a younger one with a disability) is not easy. Even selecting the right home care provider can be a challenge. So what should people look for in a prospective provider? There are myriad home care providers throughout the Phoenix metro area and Tucson. One measure of a company’s reputation is whether or not they’ve been recognized by a national organization in the field, according to Carrie Kandes, who does public relations for FirstLight Home Care, a nationwide company that provides non-medical care. “Non-medical home care provides the assistance and support people may need to maintain independence where they live,” Kandes says. “We’re helping people in your community maintain independence and enhance quality of life where they live.” FirstLight offers non-medical assistance with things like bathing, cooking, light housekeeping, errands and transportation. Keeping an eye on physical health is an accepted standard as we age, and there are seemingly limitless resources for maintaining strong physical health. While there is no denying the value of physical fitness, many often overlook emotional health as a vital part of overall well-being for seniors. Everyone experiences dips in mood, and it is common to feel down or anxious. Just as there are physical exercises that boost physical health, there are effective mental exercises and habits that can help seniors build and maintain emotional health. Eat healthy – Eating a healthy diet helps the brain maintain strong and active neuro-connections, affecting focus, memory and mood. Eat antioxidant foods, drink lots of water and don’t skip meals. You can find supported dietary guidelines at health.gov, and don’t forget to check with your doctor before changing your diet. Exercise regularly – Physical exercise is another habit that benefits mind and body. When you exercise, the body releases chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals trigger neurotransmitters, i n c r e a s i n g happiness and reducing pain and stress. It is often referred to as a “runner’s high.” How much exercise is right for you? You don’t have to run a marathon. Most forms of mild exercise will benefit your mood, but everyone should consult their doctor before starting an exercise regimen. What if you have been prescribed limited physical activity? Laugh. Like exercise, laughter also releases endorphins and will boost your mood and mental faculties.

Some find themselves in situations where friends and family are far away, and don’t have many connections. Join social activities and build relationships. People are always surprised how quickly and easily they form new friendships in social settings. These five steps can be a meaningful part of your overall happiness and support a fulfilling lifestyle that includes strong physical and emotional health. These are great ways to reach the enjoyment and life satisfaction that we deserve as we age.

Challenge your mind – Just like movement can keep a heart healthy, mental activities keep brain synapses firing and the associative cortex moving, and that supports memory and emotional health. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, memory games and other mental activities can help with focus but they also have been shown to increase confidence and happiness, too. Do something new – Routine is great and comforting in many ways, but frequently engaging in new experiences is emotionally healthy. Sometimes we can fall into a rut that reduces mental stimulation, as well as the endorphins and other chemicals that keep us mentally focused and happy. Let’s face it: When an emergency occurs, it is worrisome for just about anyone. For those who have a hearing loss or are deaf, emergencies can be even more so without taking the proper precautions to prepare for them. During any emergency situation, first responders are swamped trying to assist as many people as they can. They can’t be everywhere at once, which is why it is so important each of us does our part to be prepared in the event an emergency does occur. We have compiled some tips that are useful to everyone, as well as a list of emergency preparedness equipment that can help you safely navigate an unexpected crisis.

What should I include when creating an emergency preparedness plan?

include both landline and cell phone numbers, if available. Be sure to include an out-of-town contact who you can tell that you are safe. It is important to note that even if phone lines are down and you aren’t able to place a call, it is possible for text messages to go through. Have an evacuation route. Know the ways you can exit your home. You should try to have at least two exits from every room in case a fire prevents you from exiting through the door. Also select a family meeting place both in the neighborhood and outside the neighborhood to confirm everyone has arrived safely. Make sure to include your pets in your plan. If you have pets, be sure they are noted in your evacuation plan. Create a list of hotels that are pet-friendly in the event you need to stay in one for several days. And include vet information in case records are needed. Research and see if your neighborhood/city keeps a registry of people who might need additional communication services in the event of an emergency. If so, be sure to register yourself. This will allow emergency responders to assist you quickly in any sort of disaster. Ask a neighbor to help keep you informed. If you aren’t able to hear the warning system, ask a neighbor or someone in your support network if they would be willing to keep you informed in the event of any emergency. Add their contact information to your list of phone numbers. Put together an emergency kit. It’s always best to have one of these available to you in case of an emergency. Be sure to include non-perishable food, water, medication, a first aid kit and preprinted messages if you are deaf or hard of hearing that will assist others in communicating with you.

Alerting devices not only help people stay connected; they also help keep people safe during an emergency situation. They use one or more of these types of signals: visual (flashing lights), vibrotactile (vibrating components) or auditory (increased amplification and lower frequency sounds). These types of signals can be found in the following alerting devices: Alarm clocks - customized alarm clocks for people who have hearing loss come in many forms, including those that have builtin strobe lights or bed-shakers. Doorbell signalers – these can range from a simple, flashing strobe light to a system connected to your phone or one with its own receiver. Phone signalers – with advancements in technology, phone signalers, while still useful, have been adapted more towards cell phone usage. Modern bracelets can now alert people when their cell phone is ringing, when they are receiving a text and even when a fire alarm goes off. Weather alerts – these alerts can give warning to those who either cannot hear storm sounds outside or aren’t tuned into the TV. A weather alert radio can be used on its own or with other accessories, such as strobes or bed shakers. Baby cry signalers – manufacturers now make transmitters and receivers specifically meant to detect a baby’s crying and transmit it to a central alert system. If you are in need of an alerting device but aren’t sure which kind will best suit your situation, organizations like the Arizona Technology Access Program (AzTAP) not only offer advice and technological support, but they also will lend you an alerting device for up to two weeks in order to help you determine whether it’s right for you. All of these services come at no cost. In addition to AzTAP, Arizona Relay Service provides comprehensive support and advice for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Rich Howard Orchestra mixes modern music with classic tunes BY CARSON MLNARIK Close your eyes and you might see a Big Band in full swing or a Rat Pack crooner in a single spotlight. Maybe you’ll picture a grand piano or a bouncing rock band. But open your eyes and you’ll discover it’s actually the Rich Howard Orchestra, transporting audiences with a mix of rock ‘n’ roll and classic music on stage. They’re sure to delight guests on Nov. 8 at the East Valley Healthy Living Expo. The band features vocals, keyboards, a horn section and saxophone and trumpet players. Rich Howard, vocals and keyboards, says he never uses a song list, but instead feels out his audience and goes with the flow. His performances usually touch upon songs by bands like The Beatles and The Eagles and even Cole Porter. Howard met his bandmates through

Arizona’s professional musician union. “Before Facebook and social media, that’s how you networked and met other musicians,” Howard says with a laugh. The different performers may not have met under other circumstances, considering their varied backgrounds. Howard’s trumpet player, John Levno, formerly played with the U.S. Navy Band. He’s been with the Rich Howard Orchestra for 15 years now. Saxophone player Brad Bauder used to the play the Las Vegas circuit. He’s been with Howard for 20-plus years. “They’re fun guys to work with and we enjoy each other’s company,” Howard says. Howard has enjoyed a lengthy history with music, as well. Born in Brooklyn, his family moved to Tucson in 1959. He started playing piano when he was 8 years old, learning from the same piano teacher who taught world-renowned pianist Roger Williams. Throughout grade school, he played drums in the jazz band. When “Light My Fire” by The Doors was released, he was inspired and took up keyboard. In the ‘70s, Howard and his band at the time were signed to Capitol Records, hoping to be the label’s answer to The Eagles. When that fell through, Howard moved back to Phoenix and made a name for himself locally, performing at resorts, hotels and restaurants. He has played 300-plus dates a year in the Phoenix area for more than 30 years. Through his shows, he discovered a niche in the Phoenix music scene. “The retired population loves to ballroom dance,” Howard says. Dance events have been huge for Howard – whether it’s Frank Sinatra for an older generation or Michael Buble for the younger, he says it’s all in the same Rat Pack realm. One of his most memorable shows was at a senior dance, when a man came up to him with a list and instructed him to play songs only from that list for the rest of the night. The titles on the man’s list? Milk, eggs, cereal, potatoes … “You just roll with it,” Howard says with a laugh, also recalling a lounge show when he was performing “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” when singer/ songwriter Burt Bacharach walked right in during the song. Howard’s local popularity is mostly a result of word of mouth. He maintains a Facebook page for his band but prefers to spend his time performing rather than promoting himself. It’s worked out well for Howard, who still plays his 1983 Yamaha DX7 at shows. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” he says. Instead, it begins in the home. “The biggest misconception about hospice is that it is a place, and that it’s for the last few days or even week of someone’s life,” says Candy Malburg, Complete Hospice Care’s community educator. “We generally take care of people at their homes until the end of their lives and this can go on for many months.” Complete Hospice Care’s mission reflects its name. It offers evaluations without a doctor’s referral, and has doctors and social workers on staff if the patient needs one. Care managers facilitate referrals to help the clients get medications, equipment and services. It works with more insurance plans, too. “Our company differs from other companies in care – the care that we give to our patients and their families,” Malburg says. “We don’t do the minimum Medicare requirements. We exceed and excel at the care of patients and their families. “If a patient needs to see a nurse every day, a patient sees a nurse every day. If a patient needs a CNA every day, the patient has a CNA every day. We treat the whole person and all their illnesses, not just what brings them to hospice. That means they get antibiotics. We take patients with feeding tubes and patients who are on dialysis.”

Complete Hospice Care also has a palliative program. “It’s not a holding place for hospice,” she adds. “We help patients who are coming out of the hospital, skilled nursing facilities, having a change of condition, a new medication or a new disease process. “We work with many cancer centers to help with their patients while they are getting treatment. Our palliative program brings the social worker to the home to make sure all needs are being met at home – a nurse on call, a doctor who can visit at home, medication management, and partnering with other companies that provide care for the patient to make sure their needs are met.” This is part of Complete Hospice Care’s mantra to “do the right thing.” Medicare pays all hospice companies the same amount. “It’s what you do with the money that matters to the families who you take care of,” she says. There is a common misunderstanding by many that home care and home health care are one and the same. The difference is this: A “home care” (in-home personal care) agency provides caregivers who assist with activities of daily living, while “home health” is a medical service providing treatment and care for illnesses and injuries at home. The options for care and comfort are increasing as our aging population grows. Both home care and home health care agencies provide services that assist individuals and families with aging successfully at home. Unfortunately, the differences between these services and many others is not known or fully understood until the need arises. Home care and home health both encourage individuals to remain in the comfort of home as they age, but there are key differences you need to know so you can understand your loved ones’ needs – and yours – when the time comes.

Non-medical caregivers provide assistance with activities of daily living, which can include meal preparation, transportation, running errands, light housekeeping, medication reminders and, most important, companionship. The amount of care is directed by the care recipient, family members or a trusted advisor. In addition, the length of service is determined solely by these individuals, which provides additional flexibility for the family. Also, those who receive care are not required to be homebound, nor must they need medical eligibility or a physician’s order. Medicare is not a payment option for home care. Rather, recipients of home care services have the option of paying privately, through a long term care insurance policy, or through Medicaid, or in Arizona, the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) following a comprehensive application process.

The goal of home health is to treat an illness or injury that will aid in regaining a person’s strength, independence and self-sufficiency. Some home health services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, wound care, speech therapy, IV support, injections and the monitoring of serious illnesses. Home health is more medically oriented, where clinicians (nurses, therapists, home health aides) are providing care (nursing, therapies, etc.) for the aging, infirmed and people recovering from injuries, illnesses or surgery. Unlike home care, home health requires a physician’s order and that the care recipient must be homebound. In addition, the length of service for home health is determined by the individual’s diagnosis and need, with visits occurring

For instance, one of our clients at Cypress HomeCare Solutions who had been receiving our home care services for more than seven years began needing additional, medical-related care nearly 5 years ago. Eating well, exercising daily and drinking water seems to be the holy trinity of staying healthy, but after hitting the big 50, several other things should be kept in mind in order to age well. Any doctor’s main concern with patients nearing this big milestone is bone strength and heart health. Getting enough sleep is vital at any stage. Those who don’t receive sufficient rest have a higher risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and depression. Sleep gives your body uninterrupted recovery time from the day’s stressors, so don’t skip it. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Supplemental calcium can be beneficial, particularly calcium supplements that contain microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC).

This may seem obvious, but staying tobacco-free and moderating alcohol intake are crucial. Remember: With age, the body loses its ability to cope with these chemicals, which can result in much more serious health complications, including cancer. It’s important not to look at these tasks as chores, but as healthy habits instead.
