57OPENING DOORS
When one door closes—another one opens. This is especially true for rock band 3 Doors Down. Along with adding new band members to the mix, the guys are testing out a looser sound. Unlike some of their more somber hit singles like “Here Without You” and “Let Me Go,” their new album, Us and the Night, is all about having fun.

RING LEADER
David Shipman ran away with the circus and became the 37th ringmaster for The Greatest Show on Earth in just 146 years. After working as an admissions counselor where he told kids to follow their dreams, Shipman decided to take his own advice, and it landed him in the middle of the ring.

ylan Kongos and his brothers have been anxiously awaiting the release of their third album, Egomaniac, on June 10. The band of siblings, otherwise known as the Phoenix alternative rock band Kongos, were all set to finish the record a couple years ago when something remarkable happened. A single from their sophomore effort, Lunatic, took off. After reaching success in the brothers’ home country of South Africa, a little song called “Come with Me Now” became one of the most ubiquitous singles on radio, soundtracks and commercials. “It did well for us in South Africa and, for a couple years, it sat doing nothing in America,” says Dylan Kongos, who plays bass and lap steel guitar. “That’s why we moved on to Egomaniac.” While they were preparing to work on what would become Egomaniac, the brothers Kongos told management to send “Come with Me Now” to radio just to see what would happen; maybe they could create a bit of a buzz before Egomaniac was released. “It took off and crossed over to pop,” Kongos says about “Come with Me Now.” “Who would have thought that a song with an accordion, guitar riffs and male vocals would cross over to pop radio? “It blew us away and we had to put this new material on the back burner so we could support Lunatic by touring. It was a good problem to have.” But, Kongos admits, it was just a little frustrating when he and his brothers—guitarist Daniel, drummer Jesse and accordionist/keyboardist Johnny—had to temporarily put aside the new material. “There’s an energy and buzz around when you write a new song,” he says. “There’s a couple of weeks of being really excited about the demos and having people hear them.
“We didn’t really have much of a career to speak of until ‘Come with Me Now’ took off. We were grinding away for 10 years trying to make something happen. You take any chance with that and you run with it. We were able to tour the world. Lunatic was amazing because it got a real shot. The album was heard.”
Global influences
The Kongos brothers spent their childhoods in London and in South Africa and are the sons of John Kongos, who is best known for his 1971 hit “He’s Gonna Step on You Again.” The Manchester ‘90s band Happy Mondays based its song “Step On” on the single. The Kongos family moved to Paradise Valley and the boys attended Chaparral High School and/or ASU. “We grew up as kids in South Africa, but a lot of the writing and touring is all been in the United States,” says Kongos, whose band is expected to perform in the Valley in the fall. “Not to put down Arizona, but there hasn’t been much of a music scene or arts scene until recently. We felt a little bit isolated but it was a good thing. We didn’t get caught up in trends, hip new things or hip new styles.” Instead, the quartet of brothers kept all facets of their art inside. They wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered Egomaniac in their home studio. The Kongos’ musicians create their own artwork and shoot and direct most of their videos. “We wrote our own songs and we did whatever we wanted,” Kongos says. “I hoped that people would be able to connect to it. It’s been isolated and I think that’s a good thing. “We don’t intend to make trendy music. We tend to make the music that we like and just hope that it connects on some level with people. If we were in Los Angeles or, say, Portland or New York, we might have been swept up in a new sound or a new trend.”
13
The song “Come with Me Now” was used in the films “Holy Motors” and “The Expendables 3,” and as the theme song to the WWE pay-per-view event “Extreme Rules.” That paves the way for Egomaniac, which is set for release on June 10. Egomaniac has a good shot at success. The first single, “Take It from Me,” was the No. 1 most added song at alternative radio shortly after its April 15 release.
Family matters
The brothers have come to rely on each other. They agree that being in the entertainment business is a nonessential job. “Everybody want to be in a band or an actor,” Kongos says. “The competition out there is insane. It’s not a necessity for people’s lives. It’s not providing a service that’s do or die for people. We knew it was hard work and we’d have to put a lot of time into it.” The band was going to put out maybe one or two more albums, and then, perhaps, call it a day. They would remain in the music business, maybe playing winetasting as a jazz quartet, or “do corporate things.” “We’d probably still stick with music or film,” Kongos says. “We used to make Bar Mitzvah videos for kids. We were always doing something relative, or maybe open a restaurant—something where we could work together as brothers.” But don’t compare them to the ever-battling Gallagher brothers in Oasis. “We have our moments. Don’t get me wrong,” he says with a laugh. “We’ve been doing this for so long that we’re quick to move on to the more important things. These last two years we spent close to 10 months straight on a bus with us four and eight other people. Living in close quarters and being brothers, we’ve learned to move on from silly issues and egos.”

MOTOR CITY
MADMAN Ted Nugent talks Michigan, music and moods
Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
T
ed Nugent is one excitable SOB, as he likes to say. Speaking faster than a kitten runs, Nugent turns it loose when he is asked about music, hunting and, of course, the Motor City. On a day when he’s “so good, it’s stupid,” Nugent is not only looking forward to his July 1 show at the Celebrity Theatre, but his future. “I look forward to this interview. I look forward to being in the front yard with my dog. I look forward to snuggling with Mrs. Nugent. I just look forward,” he says. “I look forward to the unbelievable musicians that I’m surrounded by. Every time I pick up my guitar, it’s like my first (time). It’s so intoxicating.” “Sonic Baptizm Tour” that comes to the Celebrity Theatre on July 1 gets Nugent pumped up, too. He’s proud of his band—guitarist Derek St. Holmes, bassist Greg Smith and drummer Jason Hartless, a 21-year-old master of the WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
sticks, he says. “I’m constantly beating myself up to achieve the most ferocious, fiery, crispy, fat, beefy guitar tone, even though I’ve accomplished that every year of my life since 1957,” he adds. “The sound of my guitar is just insane. It makes me play like I’m possessed. It’s very exciting.” His excitability—or intensity as he interchangeably calls it—is a product of his years in Michigan. The Nugents now live in Texas. “I do interviews all the time and I don’t think they grasp the intensity that we invented and perfected in Detroit. “I think it might throw them off a little bit. I’m not sure if they know how to quite digest the ‘Motor City Madhouse,’ shall we say. It keeps them on their toes.” As for the 67-year-old, he relies on his daily activities to keep him on his toes, musically. “I live like the original man in year 1,” he says. “Today I ran my trap line. I fixed some fence. I hauled a bunch of rocks to a water crossing that was starting to erode. I trained my labs. I trained with some of my firearms. I planted a bunch of trees. I worked shovels, hoes, hammers,
saws and chainsaws. “When you function so earthly, so down to Earth, so removed from the music process, when I come in and grab my guitar, it’s like a firestorm.” Playing songs like “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Stranglehold” and “Great White Buffalo” doesn’t get old to Nugent because of these activities. “I keep it fresh because I escape it,” says Nugent, who frequently teaches guitar to children at his local guitar shop. “When you don’t play ‘Cat Scratch Fever’ except on tour or during a jam session, it’s fresh. I have such an escape through my outdoor ranching lifestyle that when I turn to the electric guitar, it’s exciting as hell.” That said, the most important piece of advice he can render is “being the best you can be in those pursuits you’re passionate about. How can it not be fresh?” He feels blessed to be able to charge forth to his passions daily. “All of the things I was just talking about, from welding to mechanics, is important. I killed a deer last night. I loved gutting that deer and carving off sacred flesh and putting it on mesquite
coals, like I did an hour and a half ago. “I have such a reputation for ferocity. They can tell I love this. That kind of dedication and compassion is really, really contagious and everybody is looking for it.” Nugent boasts of his Midwestern work ethic, or specifically, his Detroit lifestyle. He loves all things Motor City— especially the music of Kid Rock, Mitch Ryder or the MC5. “The intensity of the music—the music,” he stresses, “is unparalleled. When other people try to do it, like the Sex Pistols or some of those English bands, they look foolish. Michigan music is not organic to them. We’re defiant without trying. We just play our music and it scares people. We love the rhythm and blues defiant spirit.”

GEEKING
OUT
Anticipation rises as annual summer Phoenix Comicon approaches Connor Dziawura » The Entertainer!
D
iscover your inner geek at the annual Phoenix Comicon this month at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency. Not strictly limited to comics, Phoenix Comicon covers a broad range of related genres, from fantasy and horror movies, to anime. “As a leading pop culture convention, it is important to try to have something for everyone,” says Phoenix Comicon Convention Director Matt Solberg in a press release. “Whether you are a geek at heart or just having a passing interest in pop culture, we want all of our attendees to walk away smiling.” That they will. This year’s Comicon is from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5, and fans can partake in panels, celebrity meet and greets, after parties, and of course, the cosplaying. A worldwide phenomenon, cosplay fans work diligently to create detailed and accurate portrayals of their favorite characters. This year, attendees should expect to see many superheroes, as the genre is at an all-time high with the recent release of “Captain America: Civil War.” The massive success of “Deadpool” is also likely to lead to large amounts of cosplayers. The hype for “Suicide Squad” is ramping up, as it is set to hit theaters in August, so expect plenty of Harley Quinns and Jokers. Panels and costume meetups are another major part of Phoenix Comicon. Participants can ponder “The Death of Superman: What Happened?” or “Art of Star Wars,” both of which allow fans
to participate in discussions on comics and film. Meetups range from the ordinary (“Mad Max Meetup”) to the wacky (“Deadpool Beauty and Talent Pageant!”). Comicon isn’t just about dressing up, though. Visit the meet and greets to see stars such as Billie Piper of “Doctor Who,” Sean Astin of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and Ralph Macchio of “The Karate Kid” and “The Outsiders.” Perhaps one of the most underrated aspects of Comicon is the after parties. On last year’s docket were a Sailor Moon rave and a “Red Wedding”-themed party, based around the memorable “Game of Thrones” episode. This year, Blue Ribbon Army will be bringing “One Party to Rule Them All” to the table, with all proceeds supporting the Kids Need to Reed charity. This “Lord of the Rings”-themed party is likely to be a good time, as music and alcohol are staples of Comicon’s costumed after parties. There is a $20 cover charge. The largest area of Phoenix Comicon is the exhibit hall. With more than 500 exhibitors setting up shop in the main convention hall, fans of all genres can find something they appreciate. Exhibitors will sell vintage toys, art, costumes, weapons, movies and various other fun merchandise. The area draws large crowds to booths from the likes of Zia Records throughout the entire weekend. Founded in 2002 and significantly increasing in attendance over the years, Phoenix Comicon has become one of the city’s biggest attractions. In 2014, Phoenix Comicon set a record with 77,818 attendees. For more information, visit phoenixcomicon.com/

MAGIC MIKE
Michael Carbonaro has a positive ‘effect’ on people Jasmine Kemper » The Entertainer!
M
ichael Carbonaro has discovered a way to turn all of his passions into one exciting career. Using his love of magic, acting and special effects makeup, this mysterious man has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. “For a long time I was worried that I had my finger in too many holes,” Carbonaro says. “It was like, you gotta choose one of them or you’re just going to fizzle across the board.” You might know him from his hit truTV show, “The Carbonaro Effect,” where he uses magic to persuade people to think insane scenarios are real, such as a wireless soda machine or the hatching or a prehistoric dinosaur egg. “All of the sudden, I was in this little world of performing magic and doing it secretly. A lot of the stuff on ‘The Carbonaro Effect’ and even my live show takes that special effects background to orchestrate some of those tricks, and also takes comedy. Performing magic is a really wonderful formula to get to utilize all of those skill sets at the same time,” he says. Carbonaro didn’t always know he was going to be a magician. “When I was in my teens I would say that my two biggest heroes were Freddy Krueger and David Copperfield,” he says with a laugh. “My love for magic really came from a love for special effects and horror movies and monsters. I was sure that I wanted to be a makeup artist. I loved the art of special effects, (but) I really found myself as a performer through magic tricks.” At age 13, he stumbled upon magic on accident while looking for special effects makeup in a magic shop. “I slowly just sort of found myself on the other side of the magic shop. I always think it’s interesting that both of those things are sold in the same store—magic, makeup and costumes. It’s all that kind of secret, mysterious art.” He performed for friends and family occasionally, but it was his mother who encouraged him to continue magic growing up. “The kid next door had Big Bird come to his party, and (he) even did a few tricks and my mom was like, ‘Your tricks are so much better than that. Why don’t you put together some of your best stuff and try putting up signs in the supermarket to hire you out as a magician for parties?’”
Growing up in the densely populated area of Long Island, New York, it wasn’t hard to find magic gigs, even as a teenager. Carbonaro would pass out business cards to the neighbors, and as his popularity in the area grew, he eventually booked three of four shows every weekend. “I ended up doing that my whole life and putting myself through NYU with money I made from doing magic birthday parties,” he says. Carbonaro ultimately landed an eight-episode spot on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” where he performed “hidden camera magic.” “I came in with my ideas and they loved it. I was finding a witty way to put funny little spins and weird reasoning behind why the tricks were happening,” Carbonaro says. During his time on “The Tonight Show,” the magician met numerous network producers interested in his work, including those involved with Court TV, which was rebranded to truTV. From there, “The Carbonaro Effect” was born. The show has gained popularity since its inception, and because of that, Carbonaro is able to go on tour. He is coming to Comerica Theatre on Thursday, June 23. “It’s really fun because a lot of people know me from ‘The Carbonaro Effect.’ So everybody coming to the show knows that I am a magician. It’s really exciting—even though they know I am a magician—to find ways to throw in curveballs (and) to pull the rug out from under the audience,” he says. Carbonaro says he loves performing simply because in a world where we have all the answers at our fingertips, magic makes people stop and think. “It’s really cool that magic, more than any other art, has a way of making people stop for a second. There’s this inhale, and they breathe in, their eyes open and their mouths drop. “You can actually see them thinking: ‘The world doesn’t work the way I thought it did. Maybe there are things that I have yet to explore.’ It’s a really exciting feeling, and magic ignites that.”

HAPPY HOUR
‘Chapelle’s Show’ alumnus says laughter is a guilty pleasure Jasmine Kemper » The Entertainer!
W
e all know that mother knows best. This is especially true for comedian Donnell Rawlings, who thanks his mother for pushing him to take the comedy world by storm. “I remember one night, me and my mom were up late talking and she said, ‘Don’t tell me another joke unless you’re going to make some
money doing it,’” he says. That’s all the push he needed to pursue a career in making people laugh. However, he didn’t immediately go into standup—at first, he was just a heckler. “I started heckling the comedians. I started to become the popular heckler. The club wanted me to shut up and they pretty much dared me to go on stage and I did—and it’s what I’ve been doing 20 years later,” Rawlings says. His first experience performing on stage was frightening and exhilarating. “It was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It was electric. I was nervous as heck, but once I got good feedback on the first show I knew this is what I wanted to do,” Rawlings says. As an actor and standup comedian, Rawlings has made appearances on HBO’s “The Wire,” “Def Comedy Jam,” MTV’s “Guy Code,” and he was even the judge on its spinoff show, “Guy Court.” However, what he’s most recognized for is his role on “Chappelle’s Show” as his eccentric character Ashy Larry. Being on the sketch-comedy show was one of the highlights of his career. “We had fun, from the moment we walked on set to the time that we left. It was cool, the camaraderie was there,” Rawlings says. While acting is enjoyable, his heart will always be with his first love—comedy. “With standup I’m more in control of the destiny of my career. With acting, for the most part, it’s waiting for somebody else’s approval. I don’t get that gratification out of acting like I get out of standup. I enjoy both of them, but what I really enjoy is standup,” Rawlings says. This funnyman uses a classic-style approach to comedy, and puts his unique spin on it. About 40% of his material is planned before he goes on stage, and 60% of the show happens in the moment.
“It’s character-driven from (people) in my life. It’s observational and it’s definitely in the moment,” he says. “It’s self-reflective of my life. People really respect when you can turn something spontaneous into part of your act.” This comedy form comes from the many inspirations in his life, including classic comedians like Martin Lawrence. “When I was coming up, Martin Lawrence was one of the hottest comics, he seemed just like a regular guy telling regular day-to-day stories,” Rawlings says. The best part about standup comedy for Rawlings is making someone laugh who really needs it. “You got people that want to laugh, and that’s good, but then there’s those people who say, ‘I didn’t know I was going to come out, I’ve had trouble with my marriage, I’ve lost a family member, but I’m so glad you came out because you really made my day, you put me in a happy place for like an hour.’ That’s one of the greatest rewards of standup is making other people feel good.” What can Phoenix audiences expect from Donnell Rawlings when he plays Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy from Thursday, June 23, to Sunday, June 26? “A fresh act. Not a super clean act but not super dirty, but just a happy medium of guilty pleasure laughter,” Rawlings says. As for the future, Rawlings hopes to see the resurrection of the show that changed his life. “I’ve been pitching a couple of sitcom ideas for myself. The thing I would love to see happen, it’s very doubtful but you never know, is the return of ‘Chappelle’s Show.’ You never know, but until then, I’ll continue to hit the road and create some more opportunities.”

EXTRAORDINARY RIDES
The Lincoln MKC
C. A. Haire » The Entertainer!
T
he formula for creating a Lincoln is simple. The factory engineers take an established platform from the Ford stable, and then load it up with attractive styling, luxury trim, along with the usual bells and whistles. That applies as well to the MKC,
which is sold as Lincoln’s luxury crossover SUV. This tester was sent with all the options. First was an equipment group including moon roof, navigation, heated seats, and a list of other goodies too long to mention here at $6,900. A safety package with radar cruise control and lots of other electronics was another $2,300. How about $495 for metallic paint, and
alloy wheels at $395? Overall, the list of extras added about $17,000 to the bottom line, so a total tab passing the $50,000 mark wasn’t a surprise. The base engine is a tiny 2.0 liter rated at 240 horsepower. We had the bigger 2.3-liter turbo cranking out a healthy 285 horsepower. It is the same basic motor found in the Ford Mustang, so it provided strong acceleration. It’s hooked to an all-wheel drive system for improved grip. Driving this luxury vehicle was a real pleasure. The sound level in the cabin is quiet, and the suspension provides a smooth ride. Add to this a nice leather filled interior with the upgraded sound system and the result is a vehicle that’s great on long trips. We did observe that many of the dash buttons were too small, but this will be a serious issue only when wearing gloves. Because this is an SUV, the ground clearance is high enough to go off pavement, and I did just that. The AWD gave maximum traction while plowing through loose sand, and there was plenty of room inside for camping gear. Yet in the city, the MKC looked right at home parked next to expensive German and Japanese luxury brands. Those shopping for a luxury vehicle with practical characteristics should give this Lincoln a look.

RENAISSANCE WOMAN
Actress Gloria Reuben brings her music to the MIM stage Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
M
ultihyphenate entertainer Gloria Reuben feels lucky. She’s acted in award-winning shows like “ER” and “Mr. Robot,” while pursuing a music career. She’s also an activist, committing her time to the global climate change crisis through her participation with The Climate Reality Project, and to human rights issues with the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. “It is nice to keep it fresh,” says Reuben, during a recent phone interview. “I’m really happy to have been able to expand the horizon on my creative expression.” Reuben has spent time as a backup singer for Tina Turner in 2000, which led her to record her solo record, Just for You. She released a jazz album, Perchance to Dream, in 2015 on MCG Jazz. She is promoting Perchance to Dream with her first musical performance in Phoenix—at the Musical Instrument Museum on Friday, June 10. “I have a number of very good friends who live in Phoenix,” Reuben says. “It’s going to be a celebratory night. My birthday is the night before. I’ll be carrying on the celebration. I won’t be able to celebrate too much on the night. But it’ll be a fun night at the MIM for sure.”
Her set will be a combination of standards with different arrangements to a couple of her original tunes. Reuben will also perform a few songs at the piano. “I like doing a little bit of narration, too,” she says. “I have to say I feel like in everything I do I’m a storyteller—but there’s not too much talking. Don’t worry. There will be some anecdotes and such that’ll tie the songs together.” One of those originals is “Poor Girl,” a Maya Angelou poem set to music. The music was written by Jay Ashby, the brother of Marty Ashby, who is leading her quartet at the MIM. The other song is “When I Close My Eyes,” which she calls “more upbeat” and “feisty.” Reuben, who, at the time of the interview, was admittedly exhausted, enjoys being busy with all of her projects. “For me, I’m happiest when I’m busiest creatively,” she says. “That doesn’t necessarily mean I’m working for money. But if I’m being creatively busy, that’s a good thing.”
Gloria Reuben and the Marty Ashby Quartet Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard, Phoenix, 480.478.6000, mimmusictheater. themim.org, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, $38.50-$43.50.

PLAYING THE
COOL CHARACTER
‘Newsies’ is hot off Broadway
J
Kenneth LaFave » The Entertainer! oe Barreiro and Jack Kelly have one thing in common: They’ve never been to Santa Fe. Other than that, says Barreiro, who plays Kelly in the Disney-produced musical “Newsies” at Gammage Auditorium this month—zip. “I’m nothing like Jack as far as being graceful and always knowing what to say,” Barreiro says. “But every night when I put on the hat, I get to be him. It is so satisfying to play the cool character. It’s as fun as it looks.” And fun is the key word here. “Newsies” is an old-fashioned feel-good musical about newspaper boys who go on strike. The national road tour, which started last year following the show’s successful Broadway run, will stop at ASU Gammage June 14 to June 19. A “newspaper boy” or “newsboy,” for those too young to recall, was a kid who delivered the morning (or afternoon) newspapers to subscribers’ homes. In 1899, a bunch of them in New York City went on strike when newspaper mogul Joseph Pulitzer increased their cost of product, thus shrinking their pay. “Newsies” is based on that historic incident. The character of Jack Kelly is the strike’s leader. But, what was that about Santa Fe?
“Jack is always longing to get out of New York and find open spaces,” says Barreiro. Santa Fe becomes Jack’s unseen ideal, as well as the title of the song that both opens and closes the first act. Of course, this being a musical, and a Disney musical at that, Jack—spoiler alert here—finds his true calling during the strike, falls in love with a spunky reporter from the paper, and realizes that New York is his true home. Barreiro is a multiple-threat musical theater guy who plays the piano and conducts shows as well as singing and acting in them. Last year, he was music-directing a production of “Urinetown” in upstate New York when his agent called with a stunning opportunity: Could he audition for the touring production of the latest Disney Broadway hit? Those words led to a successful audition and fulfilled the work of his life over the past few years. “I was a singer in choir through high school but knew I didn’t want to sing in choirs the rest of my life,” Barreiro says. “I started watching a lot of Daniel Day Lewis films and his performances were so transformative that I thought, ‘I’m going to be an actor.’” Barreiro has appeared in musicals and nonmusicals and developed a sophisticated taste for both. The musical role he would most like to perform is George in Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George.” “I’d add ‘Sweeney Todd’ but I’m a tenor and that’s a baritone role, so it’s not
in my future,” Barreiro says. And the nonmusical role? “I would love to play Stanley Kowalski in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire.’ I want to communicate a deeply superficial character.” One of the things Barreiro loves about “Newsies,” in addition to being the cool character, I that the songs were composed by a childhood hero. “I am a ‘90s baby, born the year after ‘Little Mermaid,’ the first of the great Disney animated musicals. The composer was Alan Menken,” who went on to compose “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Pocahontas” and the original live-action film, “Newsies,” on which the stage musical is based. “Without Alan Menken’s music for those films, I’m not sure I would have gone in the direction I have,” Barreiro says. “Those scores are deeper in me than any other pieces of music. I am completely in awe of Alan Menken’s work.” Barreiro also praises the lyrics for the show, which were written by Jack Feldman. “There’s a move in some shows to push Broadway songs more in the direction of pop. But the Broadway show is a lyrical medium, and the words to the songs need to keep the plot moving.” After seven months touring in “Newsies,” Barreiro has no immediate plans for the future. Of course, the next call from his agent might be for a Broadway show, right? “Exactly,” says Barreiro, who knows precisely what to say.

“Angry Birds” JOSEPH’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH:
“The Lobster”
“The Lobster” is bizarre beyond words. On the outside, its strangeness may be a bit daunting. But once you crack its shell and sink your teeth into its hilariously eccentric meat you will be hooked, unable to turn away from the freaky fairy tale unfolding before your eyes. You are bound to be at least a bit disturbed by writer/ director Yorgos Lanthimos’s new dramedy, but you are also likely to laugh out loud a lot at the outlandish occurrences and dry dialogue delivery. It is also thoroughly thought-provoking, posing intellectually and emotionally challenging questions about romantic conformity.
“Being Charlie”

“A Bigger Splash” “Captain America: Civil War”
B C
“The Meddler”
So far 2016 has been the year of the “indie movie.” Those who forgo the weekly superhero film opening reward themselves with fine filmmaking and a story. This time around, Susan Sarandon turns into an award-winning performance as a busybody, overprotective mother who moves to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter after her husband passes away. Filled with humor, heart and even a few sentimental moments, this is one to not overlook. M.V.’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH:
“Money Monster”
George Clooney plays a buffoonish TV financial pundit in the Jim Cramer mold. Julia Roberts plays the longsuffering director of the silly show he hosts, and Jack O’Connell plays the scruffy disgruntled loser with a gun who takes him hostage on the air, demanding to know what happened to the $60,000 he lost to an investment that the TV guy claimed was safer than his savings account. Director Jodie Foster generates a Front Page-like energy that carries us along quite enjoyably, even as the story’s complications grows harder and harder to swallow, and the cast gives it heart.

Traditional favorites are what’s cooking at Hana Japanese Eatery
SIMPLY
IRRESISTIBLE Marjorie Rice » The Entertainer!
L
ori Hashimoto wants you to know that her family restaurant is not just a sushi bar. Instead, she says, it’s a Japanese restaurant that also serves sushi. But sushi is how I was introduced to Hana Japanese Eatery, which opened nine years ago in a strip mall that also houses Sylvia’s, a longtime Mexican food favorite in uptown Phoenix. Hana’s nigiri and sashimi are simply heavenly—some of the best I’ve had in the Valley, or anywhere, for that matter. The fish is pristine, deftly handled and cut, and served on perfectly textured rice. I especially like the toro, the fatty portion of tuna, silky and glistening with oil. The lightly seared albacore with garlic chips, ginger tataki sauce and scallions is another favorite. The scallops, which come from Hokkaido, are almost sweet, with a creamy texture, wonderful paired with Kizame, wasabi cured in water and salt and finely chopped. If you have only tried wasabi made from powder, you’re missing something wonderful if you don’t try this subtler version. I’m not a big fan of rolls, but the Hana Pecha roll could win me over. It’s a combination of tempura shrimp, asparagus, cucumber slices and kampio (a type of gourd). Very tasty. Order a lot of sushi and it may be served in an elegant wooden boat rather than the traditional small trays. Great for a large party. Enjoy the sushi, but don’t pass up the cooked side of the menu, including traditional noodle dishes such as Yasai WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
Suki, with vegetables, tofu and noodles in a killer broth; tempura seafood and vegetables; and the luscious yakibuta—pork slices in yet another delicious broth. Broth really matters in Japanese cookery. Check out the wonderful movie Tampopo (hard to find but worth the search) to see just how important this is. And don’t miss the Hamachi Kama, or grilled yellowtail collar. It’s the part of the fish just below the head. Chef Kazuto Kishino, Lori’s stepfather, simply salts it and grills it to a nice char. There’s a surprising amount of meat on those bones, succulent and flavorful dipped in ponzu sauce and dotted with a bit of finely grated daikon. It’s not always available, because Hana only uses collars from yellowtail, salmon, striped bass and other varieties that they’ve bought whole, so ask for it when you make a reservation. While Lori’s family has a long history in farming and restaurants, she began her career in the pharmaceutical industry. Her friend, Lynn Becker, was working in production at Channel 3. Together with members of Lori’s family, they opened Hana nine years ago. Lori’s brother Rick worked in Southern California, then moved home to the Valley, where he worked at several Japanese restaurants. “My brother was taught by the old-school Japanese chefs here,” she says. “He learned how to prepare dishes the traditional ways.” Lori’s mother worked for a doctor in Southern California though she had professional culinary training in Tokyo. Her culinary school was all-female, Lori says, because back then, there were no female chefs in the country. Her stepfather also has formal culinary training. They moved to Arizona several years
ago, and the impetus to open her own restaurant came when Lori would visit her stepdad at work. “I could see he was very unhappy cooking for someone else,” she says. “He had been an executive chef in California, but wasn’t here. I looked at Lynn and said, ‘Let’s open a restaurant.’ Lynn and I both had good lives and jobs, but we said ‘Why not?’” The decision may have been a sudden awakening, but the idea of owning and operating a restaurant didn’t come out of the blue. In addition to her family’s restaurant experience, the Hashimoto family has deep roots—literally—in the food scene here. “My father is a farmer here in the Valley, and had a restaurant of his own for a while,” Lori says, “so we’ve always had food in our lives in some way.” Lori also worked in restaurants as a teen, so she understood the business from the kitchen sink up. They found the location by accident. It is across the street from Lynn’s then-office. She saw a for lease sign in a former coffee shop, and Lori and Lynn, along with family and friends, transformed it into the low-key eatery it is. “When we started out it was a huge family affair,” Lori says. “Lynn would come in and do service, and when we closed, my mom would do dishes. Without every one of us brining things to the table, I don’t think it would have worked out as well as it has. “My stepfather doesn’t let anyone else cook the rice,” Lori adds. “It’s not just about the washing and the straining and the cooking. The essence of cooking is you really have to be happy when you make the food. When we started out, my mom would wash the rice and she would sing to it.”
That spirit imbues the low-key, friendly atmosphere of this neighborhood favorite. And Lori and Lynn plan to keep it that way, even as they consider expanding Hana a few years down the road. One thing that won’t change is Hana’s BYO policy. The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license, and has no plans to apply for one, so if you want beer, wine or sake (no hard spirits) with your meal, you have to bring it yourself. There’s no corkage or service charge. Now that’s friendly.

La Piñata thrives in new location
Marjorie Rice » The Entertainer!
T
here were a lot of long faces in uptown Phoenix when Mary Coyle’s Seventh Avenue ice cream shop closed. But things brightened up considerably when another venerable dining spot, La Piñata, moved there from its former location at 19th Avenue and Osborn. Gone are the pink decor and wellworn booths of the old-style ice cream
parlor. In their places are sleek, chic surfaces and colors, a spiffy new bar and a covered patio area. “When we first saw the ice cream parlor interior, we couldn’t imagine how it could become a Mexican restaurant,” says Roseanne Schulz, one of La Piñata’s owners. “Julie Bonneville of J Bonneville Design did the interiors. While the interior is contemporary, the food is classic Sonoran style— comfort food for longtime Arizonans. I’m talking cheese crisps, savory chicken
enchiladas smothered in green sauce, chiles rellenos fried to a crisp then sauced and served with terrific beans—rich brown with a spicy bite—rice, guacamole and sour cream. And we can’t leave out the chimichangas—chock full of chicken, machaca or beans, fried crisp and smothered in sauce. About that machaca...My musthave dish when I come to La Piñata is the machaca con huevos. The meat is robustly spiced, juicy and smoky. Mix in scrambled eggs and onions that have been cooked to caramelized perfection, and you have pure bliss. La Piñata started in 1970, when Peter Bugarin; his mother, Hope; and his father, Pete, an orchestra leader, decided to open a restaurant serving Sonoran-style dishes. The family, including Peter and his sisters Ramona Bugarin and Roseanne Schulz, still run the operation. Many of the serving and cooking staff have been with La Piñata since its inception, Schulz says. While none of the next generation of the Bugarin family have yet indicated an interest in taking over the restaurant, there is hope that someone will step up to continue the tradition. That would be good because this Phoenix favorite is simply too good to lose. 16 B

What do you think makes craft beer special? I think seeing and hearing about the way in which it’s made by the brewers makes it so special. The passion and care they put into the beer they produce is astounding to witness, and something you won’t see from the “big guys.” Local craft brewers spend much more time playing with new and existing recipes to create the best beer they possibly can, and spend far less time worrying about marketing or their stock prices. Local craft brewery, Huss Brewing Co. from Tempe, recently came out with a version of their famous “Husstler” milk stout called “PB Husstler,” and to create it, the whole team, including the husbandand-wife owners, sat as a group for hours on end unwrapping peanut butter cups and tossing them into the batch. What became of that brew was hand down one of the most innovative and unique stouts
I’ve ever tasted. That’s something you won’t ever see the “big guys” doing. How did you get interested in craft beer? When I moved to Seattle a few years back the craft beer scene was already very prevalent there. If I ordered a nonlocal beer in a trendy bar in Seattle, I came to expect a chuckle and a look of disapproval from the bartender. They take their craft beers very seriously and always spoke with such passion when discussing their favorites. I began trying every kind I could get my hands on and quickly realized how significantly better crafts are than their mass-produced counterparts. I fell in love and never looked back. What is your favorite part about the beer culture in the Valley? Craft beer is still somewhat up-and-coming in the Valley, which means there are far fewer “beer snobs” here than in cities like Seattle or Portland. You’ll rarely come across a bartender here who will insult your favorite, big-name beer. Rather, he or she will acknowledge the quality and validity of said beer, then encourage you to try a few different locally brewed beers that are similar in style to your favorite, but of course are much more creative, complex and flavorful. I guarantee you’ll
find something you love. Not to mention it will be made right here in the Valley of the Sun by your neighbors. Why is Taco Guild the perfect place for craft beer? We have 16 different craft beers on tap at all times, and all are made right here in Arizona, from Flagstaff to Sedona to Chandler. We rotate many of them on a weekly basis to allow our guests to experience the many different seasonals that the breweries create. This week we’ve got the summertime American Ale from SanTan Brewing Co. called LimeLeaf and a pale wheat ale from Huss Brewing Co. called Sunday Funday. Both are perfect on a toasty summer day. And of course, we have some of the best tacos in the Southwest, and craft beers pair very well with them. Ask your bartender for a recommendation next time you’re here. What is your favorite part of the beer culture? Beer lovers are always fun and eccentric. They’re rarely pretentious and are always happy to experience a new brew with new people. If I’m ever sitting at a bar by myself drinking a local craft, and I see a stranger next to me doing the same, I always spark up a conversation. Odds are he or she will provide you with some very entertaining chit-chat. What is your favorite beer at the moment? Jomax Oatmeal Stout by Wren House Brewing Co. It’s an outstanding beer made by a 1-year-old brewery located just six blocks away from us. Come try it with me at Taco Guild!

GREAT BEER PAIRINGS:
MODERN MARGARITA
Forget about wine pairings! We hail the hop. We’re all about pairing our favorite craft brews with delicious dishes from Valley restaurants. BEER
Brewery: Papago Brewing Company Style: Light Wheat Ale Name: Orange Blossom
We carry the Papago Brewing Company’s Orange Blossom by the can at Modern Margarita in Phoenix. It’s a creamsicle in a can...with a little hops. Expect notes of fresh orange zest and a surprisingly rich vanilla taste on the tongue. On the nose, there is a bit of honey sweetness, but the ale itself is not sickly sweet at all.

While Modern Margarita has earned a reputation for our fresh, flavorful margaritas and eye-popping list of than 60 highland and lowland Blanco, Reposado and Anejo tequilas, we are proud to offer more than a dozen Mexican and American beers by the can and on tap. Our team takes extra pride in helping our guests pair great beer with our award-winning tacos. Have you ever tried carne asada tacos with a hoppy IPA? How about chicken tacos with a malty amber ale? If not, come by and visit us any day here at Modern Margarita and we’ll show you what you’ve been missing.” —Judd Cummings, chef and director of kitchen operations

Both our beer-battered mahi mahi with spicy slaw, lime-spiked aioli, pickled peppers, cilantro, onions and cabbage as well as our grilled mahi mahi with pico de gallo, spiked aioli, cilantro, onion and cabbage are tailor-made to pair with the orange blossom. Given the lightness of dishes, both allow for the ale’s hint of bright citrus and a creamy vanilla finish to shine through.

MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE
Ziggy Marley promotes peace in a turbulent time Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
Z
iggy Marley’s new self-titled album has meaning to the reggae legend. He hopes it has the same importance to his fans. “I want listeners to know that love is a reality that can exist,” Marley says with his thick Jamaican accent. “If dreams of negative forces can come true, then the dreams of positive forces can come true, also.” The album was released May 20 through Tuff Gong Worldwide. Last February, Marley debuted several tracks from the album in conjunction with his acting debut on “Hawaii 5-0.” Like with Ziggy Marley, the singer stepped out of the box by appearing on the CBS television show. “‘Hawaii 5-0’ was great,” he says. “For me, it was something that I’ve never done before. It helped me to grow. With the acting thing, I had to put aside my ego to play this role and to play this other person who was not me. It was definitely a growing experience.” He admitted to being insecure about his appearance on the show. “I was not as nervous as I was being unsure,” he says. “That’s the hardest part for me. It was scary, but that’s why I decided to do it. These are challenges that I must face up to in life.” Another hurdle he faced was doing most of the songwriting, engineering and mixing for Ziggy Marley. “I was wearing many different hats,” he says. “I looked at that, too, as a learning
experience. I am very excited about having the experiences that I’ve never had before. This album helped me grow.” Marley is bringing his new music and classic hits to Chandler, Flagstaff and Tucson; see details below. Again, the show, like Ziggy Marley, comes down to the message. “I hope that people can leave the concert with an experience that helps them grow just like I grew from my experiences,” he says. Marley, the son of the late musician Bob Marley, likens his family’s work to that of preachers. “We have work to do,” he says. “When the inspiration comes to us, we are obligated to spread this good word. We’re like preachers spreading their word. We’re the same thing: We spread our word and the positive ideas that we are inspired to think.”

OPENING DOORS
3 Doors Down explores new sounds on Us and the Night Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
L
iving in Nashville is inspirational to plenty of artists who have moved there. Originally from rural Mississippi, Brad Arnold of 3 Doors Down finds it a tad intimidating, however. “You don’t sing karaoke in Nashville,” Arnold says with a laugh. “If you do, you bring your fricking A game. There’s an incredible amount of talent here. When they ask me to sing karaoke, I just sit back and say, ‘I’m good.’” But when Arnold and his band hit the stage, things are a little different. He commands attention, and will at 3 Doors Down’s show on Friday, June 10, at The Pool at Talking Stick Resort. The gig is backing its album Us and the Night, which is a departure for the band. The first single, “In the Dark,” teeters the line between pop and dance. “That’s a little bit different for us there,” he says laughing. “It was recorded different—but not just different for the
sake of being different. We were just more open minded. Whatever came out was what came out. “We just kind of opened up the fences and let it run this time. Nothing was out of bounds.” The injection of fun into 3 Doors Down’s music comes courtesy his new bandmates, including bassist Justin Biltonen, who joined 3 Doors Down in 2013 when Todd Harrell was initially arrested on charges related to a fatal crash he caused. Harrell plead guilty in 2015. “I think we really just felt more comfortable,” Arnold says about the recording process. “We have some new guys in the band right now. We just let it go in a good way. Nothing was really intentional. The only goal was to not record another old 3 Doors Down record. “No matter what we write, it’s still going to be us. We are who we are. We wanted to explore some new things and be open.” The Grammy-winning band’s previous singles like “Here Without You,” “Be Like That” and “Let Me Go” are melancholy, and Arnold wanted to step away
from that for a bit. “We tried not to be so, so deep on this record,” he says. “We tried to just have fun on it. There are some introspective songs on there, but we wanted to say was going on outside, too.” All of this was accomplished in Rivergate and Blackbird studios in Nashville. Rivergate is owned by Bobby Capps of 38 Special and Chris Henderson of 3 Doors Down. “It was nice to go home at night and be in the studio during the day,” he says. “We wanted to take our time at Rivergate and not be confined to financial constraints. That’s not how music’s supposed to be.”

ARIZONA GOLF ASSOCIATION GOLF SECTION
BIG HITTER Cardinals All Pro Patrick Peterson loves football, golf and helping kids learn to read John Davis » Special to The Entertainer!
P
atrick Peterson has been chosen to play in the Pro Bowl in each of his five seasons in the NFL, and it wouldn’t be too difficult to make a case that he is the Arizona Cardinals’ best player. Yes, Larry Fitzgerald fans would put up a good argument. Both also are golf nuts on a team with plenty of guys eager to tee it up, including quarterback Carson Palmer and Coach Bruce Arians. Peterson estimates that there are “about 15” Cardinals who are proficient around the fairways and greens. Probably none, however, are more obsessed with golf than the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, who has established a 2.3 handicap even though he took up the game little more than four years ago and has had virtually no instruction. Last summer, Peterson proudly tweeted a copy of his scorecard after shooting 2-over-par 74 at Pebble Beach, playing from the tips, after making bogeys on each of the first two holes. His attention to detail was evident on the card, which showed fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts, score and which club he hit off the tee on each hole. At home, he works on his game with a putting green, short-game practice area and an indoor simulator, and he’s quick to whip out pictures of the facilities on his cell phone. WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
In March, he combined golf with another passion, the Patrick Peterson Foundation for Success, by hosting the first Patrick Peterson Celebrity Golf Tournament at Camelback Golf Club’s Ambiente Course. The event featured plenty of celebrities, including Cardinals teammates, with the hope of raising more than a half-million dollars for the foundation that focuses on childhood literacy and reading programs. (Information: www. patrickpeterson.org ) Peterson and his wife, Antonique, recently welcomed their first child as she gave birth to a daughter on Thanksgiving. They named the baby Paityn as a tribute to Antonique’s favorite quarterback, Peyton Manning. Peterson is thrilled about being a father but not sure what the impact will be on his golf game. Recently, he talked about that, his approach to golf, his dream foursome and where his love of the game might lead. How did you get started playing golf? I got started in 2011 in Florida due to the NFL lockout, which is one great thing that came out of the lockout. Other than working out, guys had to find ways to spend their time. I was living in this condo that had a golf course right behind it and the owner had left a set of clubs there.
Training was canceled one day so I took the clubs and went to the driving range. Seven is my favorite number so I grabbed a 7-iron, hit a shot that went pretty long and perfectly straight, and I said, ‘Oh my god, I think I can play this game.’ I was hooked immediately and I haven’t put down the clubs since. With the NFL season, is it a challenge to find time to play? During the season, for about the first eight weeks, Larry (Fitzgerald) and I and a couple other guys try to get out on Friday or Saturday. After that, the shoulders are shot so I don’t play but still do a lot of putting. During the off-season I try to play four times a week, but that might change a little bit now that we have the baby because that comes first. Momma (Antonique) is still going to give me opportunities to play because I’m committed to several tournaments. I’m sure I will find playing time, but with the baby it’s definitely going to be different. How would you describe your golf game? In a word, “fearless.” That’s the approach I take. I don’t spend a lot of time over the ball, thinking about shots. I just want to get up and hit it. I don’t want a lot of thoughts going through my head because
in the early part of my so-called golf career I found myself thinking too much about what I wanted the ball to do. Once I got the principles down with hand position and club-head position, that took a lot of the thinking out of it. I don’t like practicing a lot on the range, just some stretching, hit a couple balls, hit a few putts and get to the tee. But when I get on the course, I am fearless. I rarely lay it up. I go for it. I’m a risk-reward guy. What has been your best golf round to date? My round (of 74) at Pebble Beach was pretty good, but the best I have played was at my home course (Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club) when I shot 1-under. I was there with a couple trainers from the Cardinals and I, literally, was calling out every shot before I hit it. I was on fire, and it was a great feeling. The thing I love about golf is that you can expect something different every time you play. What are some of your favorite places to play? Locally, besides Superstition Mountain, I love Camelback, Estancia, Whisper Rock, TPC Scottsdale, Whirlwind, Raven, Ocotillo, Phoenician—there are a whole bunch of them, which is a great thing about being here in the Valley.
THE ENTERTAINER! MAGAZINE JUNE 2016

Sponsored by
There are so many great places to play. Nationally, some of my favorites are Pebble, Pinehurst, Chicago Country Club, Valhalla, Sawgrass. I’ve played 12 of the top 100 and I’ve got my fingers crossed to play Augusta National this year with (PGA Tour pro) Chris Kirk. That would be incredible. What are the greatest similarities between golf and football? The one really common thing about the two of them is the break time between the action. In football, you have four to seven seconds before the next play to get your thoughts together and get prepared for the next play. In golf, when you step up to the ball, you take about four to seven seconds before you hit the shot. In football, you walk back to the huddle after the play and in golf you walk to your ball after the shot. Then you’ve got just a few seconds to get ready for what happens next. What has the experience been like playing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open pro-am? That experience has been so much fun, especially because it’s in your hometown and there are a lot of Cardinals fans out there cheering for you. It’s a lot like playing football on Sunday because of the big crowds and the party atmosphere. But it’s unbelievable to be able to experience some of the things that tour pros experience every single week. They have to have such a different focus and mindset. I really take my hat off to those guys. And what was it like playing the crazy 16th hole in front of a lot of fans? First of all, I hit a bad tee shot, but I chipped to about one foot and saved my par, which was a big relief. But leading up to it, that’s the highlight of the round. The atmosphere and energy are unbelievable, with thousands of eyeballs on you hitting that tee shot, the pressure is on you to perform. It’s the closest thing to a football setting in golf isn’t it? Exactly, and it shows if you have the “it” factor or not. That’s what I want to see, if I have that or not to perform under that pressure. It’s a football kind of setting but it’s much more nerve racking because I’m used to playing football in front of thousands of screaming fans. That’s my comfort zone. In golf, that’s a different
situation, but it’s one I always look forward to. Could you see yourself playing golf at a high level, like tour golf, in the future? Honestly, that is a goal of mine. When I’m done with football I want to be completely done with football. I want something different, a new challenge, and golf is something I would like to pursue. Being (in Phoenix), there are plenty of opportunities and I will have plenty of time to practice. As well as I’ve been able to play as a part-time golfer, I think if I put my full focus on it and dedicated myself the way I have with football, I think the sky is the limit. So what is it like when you and your teammates play together, is there any money or trash talk involved? Oh man, all of the above. There is a lot of trash talk and bragging rights for the most part. It’s always back and forth about who beat who and by how much. We don’t just talk about how bad we beat each other, but every little detail about how we did it. It’s a lot of fun. You are pretty much a self-taught golfer aren’t you? I am. I have had a few tips that did help but for the most part I have done my own thing because I want to be comfortable with myself. I have looked at a lot of lessons on the Internet but felt like the instructor wanted the pupil to swing like a pro. I’m not trying to be a pro at this point. I’m trying to hit the ball in a way that is comfortable for my body. Physically, I can’t do some of the things people have told me I should try to do with my swing. I have to do what is right for my body. I didn’t want that other stuff in my head. I want to hit the ball in a way that I’m comfortable with and still make it go where I want it to go.

OK, turning to football, let’s say the Super Bowl goes to sudden death and is going to be decided by one player from each team hitting a golf shot. How confident would you be about taking that shot? I’m very confident. Like I said before, I’m fearless. If the challenge is to hit it in a bucket, I’m going to put all my money on me. I’m going to hit it in that damn bucket.

SUMMER IN THE PARKS
Randy Montgomery » The Entertainer!
I
n preparation for summer visitors, Southern California theme parks opened their major, most-anticipated attractions this spring, including the wildly immersive Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood. Six Flags Magic Mountain debuted its new virtual reality coaster in Valencia, but the fun does not stop there. Legoland California in Carlsbad is always a great place to explore, create and spend time with the family. The park has upped its offerings by opening Ninjago World. Inside of that, guests will find Lego building stations, games of skill, as well as a new dining and shopping experience. The centerpiece of the new addition is Lego Ninjago The Ride. With technology never before seen before, the ride gives patrons the opportunity to become a Master of Spinjitzu. It features cutting-edge technology where guests control the outcome of their adventure by using hand gestures while inside the vehicle. High-tech sensors and 3-D imagery give riders the chance to blast animated fireballs, travel through dojos and master their skills. Collect points and see your score upon completion. While the Disneyland Resort continues its popular 60th anniversary celebration, a few changes are coming to Disney California Adventure. “Frozen—Live at the Hyperion,” the new musical adaptation based on Disney’s blockbuster animated film opened at the end of May. This new production clocks in at just under an hour and replaces the long-running “Aladdin” show. Fast Pass tickets will be available to avoid waiting in line for hours. “Soarin’ Over California,” one of the park’s original attractions is getting a makeover. Beginning June 17, guests
will now be “Soarin’ Around the World” and visit locations such as the Great Wall of China. Memorial Day weekend kicked off “Ghost Town Alive,” a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Ghost Town section of the park. Visit with a number of local citizens and play a role in new stories and adventures in the old west town of Calico. Ghostrider, the iconic wooden coaster, has been given a new, smoother track and brand new ride vehicles. An all-new stunt and saloon shows, and other exciting entertainment have debuted.

The original mud obstacle course is perfect for kids age 7 to 12. It includes mud pits, rope swinging, slides and much more. For the adults and children 13 and older, the extreme course is daunting. hen Valley musicians told Joe Costello that they had nowhere to rehearse, he came to the rescue. He founded The Performers Institute, a new home for aspiring musicians. The Performers Institute, a nurturing and fun setting where talented and experienced Phoenix-based musicians develop students’ skills in music, is the first of its kind in the Valley. “This is a many-years dream that has come to fruition,” says Costello. “Having been a musician for 11 years in the Valley and 45 years overall, I’ve always wanted to create a home that brings together musicians and those with an itch to perform. There is an undeniable thrill in helping prepare students to take the stage in front of live audiences. Whether you’re here to help prep for a college or high school audition or here to just have fun and play, fun will be had and you will learn how to perform.” Located in a 7,000-square-foot facility at 2261 W. Desert Cove Avenue near North Mountain in Phoenix, The Performers Institute offers music programming, including several summer music camps, and provides space for rehearsal and performance. It also offers instruction on the business side of music, including topics such as copyright law, obtaining gigs, leading a band, sales and promotion. Recently, Costello started offering hip music camps for kids, and enrollment is open. Students will learn two to three songs from each relevant band and on the final day, they will perform on The Performers Institute’s main stage. Camps include: Seattle Grunge Camp – Nirvana, June 6-June 10 Rock or Bust – AC/DC Camp, June 13-June 17 Funk Camp – James Brown, June 20-24 Punk Rock Camp – Green Day, June 27-July 1 Are You Experienced Camp – Jimi Hendrix, July 5-8 Light My Fire – The Doors, July 11-15 UFOs & Rock N’ Roll – Foo Fighters,
July 18-22 Second British Invasion – Coldplay, July 25-29 To enroll or for information, go to theperformersinstitute.com. “Before the camps start, we’ll give them a complete outline of what we’re going to do at each camp and what tunes we’re going to learn,” says Costello, who leads the Joe Costello Project and the Joe Costello Syndicate. “There are great harmonies in The Beatles’ music. They’ll learn the songs with instructors, then on Friday or each week, they’ll perform a concert on the main stage for the parents, friends and family. Before they perform, they’ll sit in the green room and be nervous, and hear people clapping in the other room.” The children’s camp is one way in which Costello is making his dream come true. “Ultimately, I want this place to be filled with musicians, actors and dancers,” he says. “I want the main stage to be used to have people hone their craft. They can learn more about what they love and what they’re passionate about.”

RUNNING AWAY WITH THE CIRCUS David Shipman is living his dream in the ring
Jasmine Kemper » The Entertainer!
A
t 2 1/2 years old, David Shipman’s parents took him to his first Ringling Bros. circus. He remembers the horses, the elephants, the sawdust and— most importantly—the ringmaster. “You know, you don’t remember much from when you were 2, but everyone remembers their first circus,” Shipman says. Today, he is the 37th ringmaster in the circus’ 146-year history. Even though he’s a performer at heart, Shipman got a “big boy” job after college as an admissions counselor for an art and design college, where he did musical theater in his spare time. “My job was essentially to meet with students, figure out their passions and remind them that they needed to take chances and that life began at the end of their comfort zone and to do things that might scare them.” After a while, he came to a realization about his own life. “I wasn’t following my own advice. So I decided that I was going to leave my job in 2012 and focus on really putting my own words to good use and pushing myself to my own limits of my own comfort zone,” Shipman says. Shipman landed his job as ringmaster thanks to a stroke of luck. He was living in Orlando, Florida, when he saw a posting on Facebook from Feld Entertainment, the owners of Ringling Bros. “I missed the audition by a week and a half, and I almost scrolled past it, but with that ‘do-the-things-that-scare-you’
mentality, I thought, the worst they can say is no.” He sent in his headshot and resume anyway and, within an hour, they invited him to a private audition with the owners. “It was something that was never supposed to happen, if I’d scrolled passed it and just kept going, I think that things could have been very, different. It was very serendipitous that it lined up the way that it did.” As ringmaster, Shipman plays a big part in creating the show. “There are writers, songwriters, directors and choreographers but I think the shows are created for our personalities. The ringmaster gets a say in how things are written, how things are delivered, and then from there, it’s really about the audience and figuring out how to take the audience on a journey.” Shipman says there are a lot of misconceptions about ringmasters and circus performers. “There’s this preconceived notion that the ringmaster is an older, kind of chubby guy who’s kind of balding and he stands in the middle of the ring shouting into a megaphone. It’s not like that anymore. It’s an all-inclusive role. I get to sing and interact with the audience and the cast. It’s not just barking orders—it’s the showmanship style, which is fun,” he says. Along the same lines, the word “carnie” get thrown around to describe circus performers, which, for Ringling Bros., couldn’t be further from the truth. “We travel with the most elite of athletes, they are trained professionals, incredible performers and they are the top of the top. It’s just really amazing to get
to see them perform every single night,” Shipman says. He recently said farewell to some of the most iconic performers in “The Greatest Show On Earth”—the elephants. “It was very, very bittersweet. The elephants have been a part of The Greatest Show on Earth for over 146 years—that is a very long time. To be surrounded by them and to be able to get to say that I was one of the very last ringmasters to work with them is something really powerful. I’m really grateful that I got to see it out.” Shipman and the rest of the Ringling Bros. team are coming to Phoenix for their Circus Xtreme performance from Thursday, June 23, through Sunday, June 26, and audiences are in for a wild ride. “What makes Circus Xtreme so fun is that it is a perfect nod to where we came from and where we’re going. There are beautiful, traditional circus elements to it. We’ve got the things that people love—the high wire, the human cannonball, the tigers—the things that keep people on the edge of their seats, but we’re fusing those traditional elements with modern techniques. “We’ve got BMX bikers, parkour flippers, trampoline jumpers—all doing a simultaneous, freestyle sports display unlike anything we’ve ever done before in the circus, and it’s really new and current and modern, and it’s just really fun for audiences,” Shipman boasts. Even with all the excitement from working for the circus, Shipman says he humbled to be a part of such a wonderful show. “It is absolutely life-changing. I’ve grown so much as a person in this job and

to make such an impact in a position such as ringmaster and to look out into the audience and see that magic we talk about when we talk about circus—there’s something that really transcends generations. It’s the reason they call us ‘The Greatest Show on Earth.’ “I got the chance to run away with the circus and who can say they can do that nowadays?” he says with a laugh.

FINDING STABILITY

rummer Cody Hanson is feeling something he hasn’t sensed in a long time with his band Hinder—stability. Former lead singer and Hinder cofounder Austin Winkler suffered challenges with sobriety that were well documented before he departed the band in 2013. Since then, new vocalist Marshal Dutton has been the rock that Hinder needed.
“It’s something we’ve never had before,” Hanson says. “We always had that question mark. Now we feel like a band— really solid and tight. The four of us know what the goal is moving forward.” The band is celebrating the release of its first acoustic EP, Stripped, with a show at the Musical Instrument Museum on Sunday, July 3. “We’re planning on putting together a setlist of songs that we normally wouldn’t play,” Hanson says. “We’re going to be doing different versions of different songs. We’ll mix up some of the instrumentation. I’m sure I’ll come out and play guitar. Marshal and Mark will play piano. We’re planning on making it special for sure.” Hanson says he and his bandmates always wanted to release an acoustic album. Now was the right time. “It gives us an opportunity to show off Marshal’s ability,” he says. “He’ll play shows around town and we’ll got to the bar and watch him play. We’ll go to see him play around town and he’s so much fun to watch in that setting. That’s where he shines.” The EP primarily focuses on reimagined songs from Hinder’s last album, When the Smoke Clears. It also features a cover of “Not an Addict” by K’s Choice. “We heard Marshal play it before and thought it was super cool,” Hanson says. “We thought it was super cool and we started doing it for VIP sessions on the road for people. We decided to throw it on the EP.” Hanson says he and the rest of Hinder, who is working on a full-length album, admire Hanson for what he brings to the band “He’s one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever met,” he says. “He’s so one of the most talented musician I’ve ever met. He’s a great songwriter, a great producer. His knowledge of music is incredible. I learn something new from him every day. His knowledge about music is endless.”

Los Lonely Boys bringing positive message to Chandler
Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
G
od, life and love are three things by which Los Lonely Boys live. The three musicians—Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza—find it tough sometimes, but they rely on the love of God to get them through the bumps in life. Their mother died a year ago, and previously they almost lost Henry. Their 2014 album, Revelation, touched on Henry, who suffered serious injuries in a fall from the stage during a February 2013 Los Angeles performance. It necessitated a lengthy and ongoing recovery period. “That was a big change for us,” Jojo acknowledges. “The whole experience was a wake-up call for us. It made us rethink every aspect of our lives and our careers, and it reminded us of what’s really important to us.” The new music that Los Lonely Boys is writing is inspired by their mother’s death. But as usual, they put a positive spin on it. “There is always some sort of struggle or something that tries to stop you from
what we feel is God’s work,” Jojo says. “When Henry got hurt, it was a tough time for us, but we found a way through. We lost our mother last year and we’re still working through that now. We’re coming up on a year here in June. But when you’re doing something you love, that helps you deal with the blows that life gives you.” He says that that can be hard sometimes. “It hurts to be without those you love,” Jojo says. “The mourning never really ends. We’ve lost multiple family members. It hurts and it’s something that stays with you forever. You only have one mom and one dad.” The band has been writing occasionally, but there isn’t a new album in the works. Los Lonely Boys is still pushing Revelation, for which it worked with alt-country icon Radney Foster, in-demand pop tunesmiths Matthew Gerrard and David Quiñones, Black-Eyed Peas collaborators George Pajon Jr. and Keith Harris, and Raul Pacheco of Ozomatli. “Those guys are something else,” Jojo says about Ozomatli, with whom they played at the Comerica Theatre some years
back. “They’re a great live band. “Raul Pacheco is more than a guitar player. As far as the band goes, he plays a lot of guitar parts. But we’ve written a few tunes together.” Like Los Lonely Boys and Ozomatli, the music brings fans and the band together. Music does not divide people. “We’re all about having a good time, but we also make an effort to write about things that really matter,” he says. “A lot of people write songs about superficial things, like how you look and what kind of car you drive and how much money you have, but we’re not interested in that. We want to create music that’s about the love and the energy and the spirit that we all carry as people. “We’re very thankful that God blessed our family with a drummer, a guitar player and a bass player, and that the three of us get to make music together. There’s been a few bumps in the road here and there, but that happens in any family and in any band. The main thing is that we stick together, and that we’re trying to pass on that feeling of brotherhood, of familia, in the music that we make.”

MAD MIXOLOGIST
Getting down and dirty with the Valley’s hottest shot slingers Behind the bar, it is my job to give people an experience and make them happy. It isn’t my place to judge anything anyone wants (even mascarpone cheese drinks). That being said, given the sweet notes of both the rum and Coke, I might try to suggest some other cocktails to try later with those same characteristics— maybe a flavored vodka-inspired cocktail or even a wine-based cocktail. Or, if they want to stick with the rum and Coke, I may suggest a different brand of rum to mix things up as well.
What is one cocktail would love for us to feature in the magazine this month? The Vino Spritz
What do you like about this drink?
Alison Bailin Batz » The Entertainer!
K
yle Mason is the winner of last summer’s “Bar Brawl” series at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain’s famed Jade Bar. A service industry veteran, who was inducted into Jade Bar’s esteemed Hall of Fame earlier this year along with friends and fellow bar legends Micah Olson, Jason Asher, Clint Spotleson, Jillian Vose, and Tyson Buhler, took over as the general manager of La Bocca Urban Kitchen + Wine Bar on High Street less than a year ago and is already making his mark. Since taking on the role, Mason has helped to innovate a new cocktail program for the High Street location as well as its sister restaurants in Tempe and (soonto-be open) Chandler. This summer, he will also launch an extensive wine program that will rival the best wine and cocktail bars statewide, including the addition of a new wine preservation system behind the bar that will allow guests to sample hard-to-get brands and varietals by the glass or ounce for a fraction of the cost of
purchasing a bottle. The new dad is also engaged!
Tell me about the oddest drink request you’ve gotten. Believe it or not, someone once challenged me to dream up a cocktail using mascarpone cheese. Yes...one of the most buttery, richest, creamiest of all the cheeses—in a drink. Now, before you stop reading this for fear of me describing the grossest cocktail concoction of all time, hear me out. I actually had some experience in making cheesecake martinis—albeit with flavored liqueurs—so I took a chance and used the cheese as a base ingredient along with Orgeat, black pepper, gin, lemon, heavy cream and a few other flavor profiles, eventually shaking silly until it was the consistency of a chocolate dessert martini. As a former college baseball player in addition to bartender, I like to think the result was a complete homerun.
What is your No. 1 pet peeve when working? Time is money in the bar business.
You have to be as fast as you are accurate and creative in making each drink. Organization is essential. So, if even one person on the team is messy, it throws everyone off their games. And it costs all of us money.
What is your go-to drink when you’re at a bar other than your own? Like Mark Twain, Winston Churchill and James Joyce, I love a good bourbon. And while I may order a Sazerac or Old Fashioned—both whiskey/bourbon-based cocktails—once in a while, I love nothing more than talking to other bartenders around the Valley about the latest, greatest and classic bourbon offerings on their menus. Like so many bourbon lovers, the $1,000 bottle of Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 20-Year Bourbon is on my bucket list, but most of the time, I am completely happy with a nice Maker’s Mark on the Rocks.
What does ordering rum and coke say about a person? You know what? Absolutely nothing!
First and foremost, the cocktail is a totally new recipe and also a symbol of the types of drinks we want to innovate moving forward at La Bocca. We are an urban wine bar that wants to show off killer cocktails inspired by all sorts of wines, beyond just sangrias (which we also made in-house and are to die for, by the way!). Wine and spirits are meant for each other! I like this drink specifically because it is perfect for the summer with its light watermelon notes. It is balanced, easy and uncomplicated—like a perfect summer itself.
CHOSEN COCKTAIL RECIPE 1 1/2 ounces Ketel One Vodka 1 ounce Pinot Grigio 3/4 ounce watermelon syrup 3/4 ounce lemon juice Put all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake for about 10 seconds. Strain into a martini or rocks glass, depending on your mood.
