Tips to ease high school anxiety BY KATHERINE SARBACKER

Director of College Counseling Glendale Preparatory Academy, Great Hearts

FIRST-RATE INSTRUCTION ....... 2 Cartwright gives students opportunities and instruction

Knowing when to start preparing for college can make a world of difference in parents’ and students’ anxiety. Early high school years are a crucial time for parents to help their kids ease the transition into adulthood. Working as a counselor at Great Hearts Glendale Preparatory Academy, the below fundamental tips will assist in keeping your child on track for college and future career success.

Freshman year

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL ... 14 Pendergast Schools helps you make the right choice

Have a conversation with your children about their passions and encourage extracurricular activities that align with those interests. It’s important to help your child make a good impression by allowing them to introduce themselves to college counselors early. Set quality time aside to go on tours of prospective colleges. This is important all four years, so try to fit one into each vacation. Help your children develop a love of learning so they are well prepared for college. School must be their “job,” so why not love it?

Sophomore year Help your students determine the extracurricular activities they will commit to throughout high school. At Glendale Prep, we offer a practice ACT and based on the PSAT scores help each student identify the tests they should

take. Work on summer program applications to build a college-ready resume.

Junior year At Great Hearts, we discuss SAT test strategy with our students. If this service is not available at your school, you can research the tests that are best to take. It’s best to get 11th- and 12th-grade teachers for recommendation letters, so building those relationships now is important. This is a good time to start having conversations with students as to why they want to go to college. This line of questioning will also help determine what they are looking for in

a college experience.

Senior year Help your high schoolers research the various scholarships available and apply. Encourage them to send thank-you letters to all teachers who wrote recommendation letters. Make sure the child’s personal statement is complete and concise. Finalize a college list and start applying. The recommendation is for all families to complete the FAFSA by January 1. There are merit-based scholarships (not dependent on need) that cannot be awarded by some schools without a FAFSA on file.

A high achieving multicultural community for scholars. Begin your educational journey in kindergarten and continue it all the way to 8th grade. One team, Una Familia!

Career & Education Opportunity

BY LISA STEVENSON, PRESIDENT

We opened the doors in 2001, being the first 12 week program in the State of Arizona. We are licensed by the State Post Secondary School of Education and approved for funding by many state agencies. It is our endeavor to prepare individuals with the knowledge and technical proficiency that will allow them to become immediately employable in a dental office upon graduation. It is our objective to offer the best possible education in the shortest possible time consistent with proper educational procedures. Students are accepted regardless of sex, race, age, and marital status, and religious creed, ethnic or national origin. There are many opportunities available to well-trained individuals in the dental profession. It is our desire to train chair side dental assistants to assume the many positions available in the dental field. Modern dentistry requires the assistance of dental assistants well-schooled in four-handed or

sit down dentistry. It is very difficult for dentists today to treat their patients without proper chair side assistance. The Arizona School of Dental Assisting is dedicated to the ideal of develop-

ing efficient, effective dental assistants through a competency-based program. For more information, call the Arizona School of Dental Assisting at 602-6787061, or visit azdentalassistants.com.

It’s been said, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” This is especially true in job interviews because applicants are there to impress prospective employers with their skills, positive attitude and drive. Not dressing appropriately can negatively impact the chances of landing a position. “This does not mean that you need go out and buy a new wardrobe filled with designer fashions. Simple, tasteful, clean and pressed will do the trick,” said Izelle Silva, director of career services at Glendale Community College. “Another thing you should do is to ask yourself this: ‘Is what I’m wearing going to be appropriate for the com-

pany I’m applying at?’ Here is where a little research goes a long way. Find out if the dress code is business casual or traditional business and select your outfit accordingly.” It is very important to wear comfortable clothes. Tight, revealing, ill-fitting clothing may make applicants fidget and continually adjust their clothing. “When you dress sharp and wear a nice suit, you will feel better about yourself and you will project confidence,” she said. Unsure of the definitions of business casual and traditional business attire? Silva suggests going online. “Pinterest is a great resource,” she said. “It gives you visual examples. In additional to Pinterest, there are many websites that offer ideas.”

BY WESTSIDE HEAD START

Maria Pataka loves to work with families. She loves to see them improve and see their “wonderful outcomes” at the end of the year. That’s a common occurrence at Catholic Charities Westside Head Start, where Pataka serves as family support specialist supervisor. More than a preschool, more than a day care, Westside Head Start is a place where the entire family matters. Westside Head Start program meets or beats all national rankings from Head Start programs across the country, and the staff is the reason. Team members bring their passion, expertise and nurturing spirit to the classroom every day. Just look at the staff’s outcomes: • More than 35% of the students exceed expectations when it comes to social emotional skills by the end of the year, while only 9% exceeded at the beginning of the year.

11

Career & Education Opportunity

• Catholic Charities Westside Head Start offers more than 15 opportunities for parents to play a defining role in Westside Head Start, including parent committee meetings, monthly classroom experiences and gardening opportunities. • The facilities served more than 1,100 children and their families last year, and nearly 90% received medical and dental screenings. “I am even more committed to work here after my son experienced Westside Head Start as a student and got all the help that he needed,” Pataka said. Catholic Charities Westside Head Start is hiring for numerous positions, as well as seeking volunteers in and out of the classroom. As the Head Start continues to expand hours and locations, it seeks passionate community members to lend their support. To apply or for more information, visit catholiccharitiesaz.org.
