GRADUATION: COVIDITIS ............ 9 Deer Valley student puts positive spin on graduation woes

Stay connected, stay local BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

With the COVID-19 pandemic still dominating the world, high school graduates and transfer students may choose to stay closer to home to continue their studies this fall. Encouraging students to “Stay Connected, Stay Local,” Ottawa University-Arizona (OUAZ) wants these bright young minds to consider its Surprise campus at 15950 N. Civic Center Plaza. “We are preparing all necessary precautions to host students at our brand-new residential campus in Surprise, which also has emergency services on site,” said Dr. Brian Sandusky, OUAZ’s chief enrollment officer. “Students may want to stay close to home and we want them to know about their opportunities here with us. We have new facilities on our campus, which opened in Fall 2019. It’s an exciting time for us here in Surprise.” Founded in 1865, Ottawa University is a nonprofit, private liberal arts university with its original residential campus in Ottawa, Kansas. The professional campus in Phoenix has been educating adult learners in the Valley for more than 40 years and boasts more than 8,000 alumni. Surprise is home to Ottawa University’s second residential campus. Housing at OUAZ features a new residence hall with suite-style, fully furnished rooms. Amenities include cable television and a 55-inch, wall-mounted TV, laundry facilities, student lounges and a game

room. Scholars Hall accommodates more than 300 students. Ottawa University offers housing awards for students who hail from the West Valley—Avondale, Buckeye, Deer Valley, El Mirage, Goodyear, Glendale, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Sun City West, Tolleson, Surprise, Waddell, Whitman and Youngtown. “We believe a fully rounded educational experience for students includes residential living,” Sandusky said. Students who stay in university housing for six semesters, or three years, are eligible for 50% off their graduate tuition rate while studying at OUAZ Surprise. “We want to bring value to our commu-

nity and our alumni, and this is one example of that mission,” Sandusky said. Two other new buildings are part of the OUAZ campus. The student union includes a state-of-the-art dining center, an entertainment lounge with indoor/outdoor fireplace, fan shop, mailroom, classrooms and banquet hall. It is also home to the new Adawe Center mentorship program, which is designed to help students be successful in their college experience. The new O’Dell Center houses the university’s athletic facilities, fitness and recreational center, Faith Arena, facility and athletic

Career Success Schools will kick off the Star Academy program in the fall. A school within a school, Star Academy Program enhances success for disengaged learners. Focused on helping students make the critical transition from middle school to high school, the program utilizes a hands-on, project-based learning approach that re-engages students and prepares them for future success in high school and beyond. This comprehensive program is tailored to meet the specific needs of a school, allowing the district to select up to eight courses from an offering of core classes in science, math, English and social studies and electives in practical arts, life skills, technology, health-based instruction and real-world career connections. Arizona-based Career Success Schools was incorporated in 2000 and operates four charter school campuses

Preparing for a life of significance: Personal growth days Ottawa University is committed to developing students to be work-ready and world-ready upon graduation. Personal Growth Days (PGDs) consist of three important components: Spirit Life, a worship and speaker series; Network Lunch, a community lunch on campus; and Student Development Courses, a series of life- and workskills workshops “Our chancellor, Dr. Kevin Eichner, came up with the idea of limiting classes on Wednesdays to allow for our PGDs,” Sandusky said. “We have a variety of guest speakers, such as com-

in Phoenix. The Sage Campus enrolls students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, while the Tech and Robert L. Duffy campuses host kids in grades nine to 12. The North Campus enrolls students in grades seven to 12. All four campuses operate as alternative schools, which serve at-risk populations. Three of them also offer a Dropout Recovery Program, which is available to students ages 16 to 21 who have not received a high school diploma or attended school for 30 days. The programs and schools are accredited through Cognia, an independent organization with researched-based standards that are above state standards. Career Success Schools operate their schools under a 20-year charter contract with the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools that expires 2035. Sage Campus is located at 3120 N. 32nd Street; Tech Campus, 3816 N. 27th Avenue; and Robert L. Duffy Campus, 2550 E. Jefferson Street.

munity- or faith-based leaders. The Wednesday workshops provide students with work-readiness skills, like resume writing and interviewing. Students need those skills. There’s a focus on world-readiness skills, too. That can be how to buy a house, how to budget, business dinner etiquette, and even changing a tire.” Ottawa University prides itself on being a “participatory campus.” Students participate in academic clubs, competitive club sports and varsity athletics. For example, students who participate in the business club gain real-world business experience outside the classroom, while receiving a significant scholarship to help them. “We have ACT, SAT and GPA scholarships, as well as scholarships for the academic and club sports,” Sandusky said. “These are unique and lucrative scholarship opportunities for our students.” Complementing OUAZ’s robust varsity athletic offerings are the university’s competitive club sports. Esports and badminton are starting in the fall. Other programs include ultimate frisbee, cycling, outdoor adventure, bowling and wrestling.

Class schedules that fit today’s student Gone are days of one-size-fits-all scheduling, and OUAZ offers an innovative alternative. “Our exclusive FlexTerm scheduling is one of our biggest distinguishing features,” Sandusky said. “It has been well received by students.” FlexTerm scheduling consists of classes offered in a four-, eight- or 16-

week term format. Students work with their faculty mentor to assist them with their course scheduling. This flexible format allows them time to study and participate in activities. Visit ottawa.edu/ouaz to learn more about OUAZ’s programming and scholarships. So next semester, remember to “Stay Connected, Stay Local.”

Peoria chamber is helping businesses weather COVID-19 BY SCOT ANDREWS

President and CEO Peoria Chamber of Commerce

Character is tested when you are up against it. Over the last 60 days, in response to COVID-19, during this unprecedented time of uncertainty and duress within our Peoria business community, the Peoria Chamber of Commerce is making a difference for West Valley businesses. However, there is no “I” in team. The Peoria Chamber dedicated its resources to a “task force” led by the city of Peoria in collaboration with ASU’s Peoria Forward, the SBA and the Small Business Development Center to tirelessly respond, communicate and support the business community. Peoria is home to over 3,500 small businesses. All of these businesses were impacted financially from this pandemic. Many closed or reduced staff to survive. During this time, a network of concerned and giving business owners, resource partners and residents jumped into action to help

as well. Through their gifts of serving, hundreds were helped. Deputy City Director Katie Gregory led our task force. Through her leadership, the team mobilized, responded and delivered for our community. We worked together, frequently, sometimes daily to define strategies that matter to business and took action. During the last 60 days 1,900 business were contacted. More than 700 volunteer hours of support were provided. Over 300 Peoria restaurants were called by the task force, and those restaurants were provided take and delivery banners, digital “open for business messaging” and other messaging designed to drive purchase patronage during the crisis. About $5,000 in meat and vegetables were provided with over 150 free meals. And over $7,500 in durable goods were provided to first responders. The Peoria chamber deferred membership dues for a large portion of our members and focused on marketing their businesses through offers and

digital communications. What’s next? As our businesses begin the process of restarting, both consumer and employee safety are paramount. Each business should leverage OSHA and CDC guidelines to put in place an effective restart safety plan. And our community must take action to support our small businesses through their patronage. The Peoria Chamber of Commerce’s partnership with the city of Peoria, Peoria Forward and SBDC is a powerful alliance for business owners to access. Joining the Peoria chamber now is more important than ever to enable your business success. The Peoria Chamber of Commerce is operating virtual in the short term. All of our virtual events are complimentary to members and nonmembers. These include Coffee is for Closer sales train-

ing, weekly Percolate Peoria, our Virtual Happy hours and more. Come join and get to know us! We would like to meet you and discuss your business. Experience the new Peoria Chamber of Commerce. Visit peoriachamber.com or email memberservices@peoriachamber.com

Searching for job during COVID 8

Career & Education Opportunity

BY JOHN HECKENLAIBLE Glendale Community College Marketing and Communications

The COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately caused widespread job loss, however there are industries that were less affected, and companies are hiring, according to Izelle Silva, Glendale Community College’s director of career services. As businesses reopen, she said, the public will slowly see more job gains. However, the COVID crisis has changed the way people will seek and find jobs. Gone are the days of going to in-person networking events or making connections over coffee. Now, job seekers need to find online networking groups and ask themselves, “How can I grab a cup of coffee and connect with others in a virtual world?” Silva reiterated that companies are hiring and suggested areas to check for job postings. TV news channels are holding virtual job fairs, the Maricopa Community Colleges recently held a virtual job fair and there are websites such as career.

services@gccaz.edu and bestcompaniesaz.com/covid-19-hiring-companies. Job seekers can make sure they are marketable for open jobs by researching the skills needed for the positions they are interested in. Then they can audit their skills and see if there’s a gap. If there is, consider what to do to close that gap—taking courses or getting training from a school like Glendale Community College. Companies seeking employees are moving to an online/remote interview process. Because of that, phone and video conferencing apps like Zoom and Google hangouts are becoming more widespread. Job seekers will have to get comfortable with this technology by logging on, testing it and practicing with family and friends. Before an interview, make sure the area in the frame of the video is clean and uncluttered, the location is quiet and free of distractions, and that you are dressed appropriately. Silva stressed the need to stay focused and organized during a job search. She
