School of Rock offers performance-based music lessons in guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums and vocals.
School of Rock Unveils Classes For kids about to rock, School of Rock salutes you. The performancebased music school in Gilbert marks the third location in the Valley that teaches guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums and vocals. The students are taught how to read, write and perform music based on classic and modern rock and even Top 40 hits. “They learn from rock bands to give them a well-rounded view,” said general manager Megan Baskerville. “Metallica was inspired by musicians that did not sound like Metallica. So our job is to give them that whole scope.” School of Rock offers private and group lessons. “Rock is such a huge umbrella, so we do a Motown show, a ‘60s reggae show,” Baskerville said. “We do classics on up to shows that have more of a pop edge. It’s a lot of fun.” Students also get to perform at venues like the Crescent Ballroom, The Pressroom in Phoenix, and the now-shuttered Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill in Mesa. “We try to give them that real concert experience,” she said. Owner Steve Gentilini owns all three Valley School of Rock locations. “There is the music part of this, but it’s so much more,” he said. “It’s a place for kids to go and hang out.

It’s a safe place for kids and what they learn here also translates into the classroom. The performance skills they learn here give confidence to do well in school, too.” In some respects, School of Rock is like team sports because kids constantly work together to deliver a performance. Shane Baskerville is the music director at the three locations. “Our instructors are awesome,” he said. “I get them through different channels. A lot of them have music degrees and a lot of them have been touring musicians. “Everybody has a highly scholastic background or a really good touring background.” All teachers are given a thorough theory test prior to being hired. The school, which also has Phoenix-area locations in Ahwatukee and Scottsdale, includes a small recording studio that can be used by its students for free. For School of Rock students who have bands outside of the school, they are also welcome to use the practice room. School of Rock offers a complimentary lesson for new students. Tours are available at the facility at 885 E. Warner Rd. Call (480) 483-7625 for additional information or visit www.gilbert.schoolofrock. com. December 2014

By Curt Blakeney The holiday season is all about giving, so when Darryl and Kathleen Toupkin were searching for a way to give back to the pet community, the husband-wife team hatched the idea for the 12K’s of Christmas & Santa’s Pet Village in 2009. Now in its sixth year, event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 13, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Freestone District Park in Gilbert, 1045 E. Juniper Road. Admission is free. It’s $10 to $40 to enter any of the races. As the largest pet adoption event of the season in the East Valley, the 12K’s of Christmas & Santa’s Pet Village raises funds for and helps find adoptive families for homeless dogs and cats. Over the past five years, the event has raised more than $35,000 and helped find new homes for more than 1,500 dogs and cats. “My husband and I love the holidays and love dogs, and we are both runners,” Kathleen Toupkin said. “We wanted to do an event that would bring all ages together to celebrate Christmas in a fun, healthy environment, while helping animals. It’s become a labor of love for us both.” In partnership with Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, the event will host a couple dozen animal rescue groups in Santa’s Pet Village, including Akita Advocates, Amazing Aussies, Arizona Border Collie Rescue, Arizona Pyrenees Rescue, Arizona Sheltie Rescue, Dane Haven, Friends of Animal Care & Control, Panacea Animal Wellness Sanctuary, Pittie Me Rescue, Rusty’s Animal Sanctuary, Save the Cats AZ, Southwest Collie Rescue, Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue, and others. Local rescues will showcase animals available for adoption, while also raising money and recruiting volunteers. The event is family friendly with plenty of activities planned: a Christmas Bazaar, bouncy houses, and, of course, a visit from Santa, who is available for photos with children. Christmas caroling on the San Tan Ford Reindeer Stage will be voiced by local groups and performers, including the San Tan Community Performing Arts, Pueblo Middle School, Talent Team

Gilbert became the third Arizona community to regulate e-cigarettes after the Town Council approved an ordinance that prohibits their use inside town-owned facilities.
The regulation came after the town received several complaints of people using e-cigarettes inside the Freestone Recreation Center and the Town Hall. Gilbert has been recognized as the second safest city in the United States for the second year in a row by Law Street Media. Utilizing data from the FBI’s 2013 Uniform Crime Report Statistics, the study reviewed cities with populations over 200,000 and credits Gilbert’s high ranking to the town’s more than 10-percent drop in violent crime rate in the last year. One of Gilbert’s most noticeable landmarks has become more illuminated in advance of the holiday season. The downtown water tower was adorned with lights in an event that included a live band, a horsedrawn carriage and other activities. The Water Tower Plaza is located at 45 W. Mallory Lewis and Lamb Chop will perform at Higley Center for the Performing Arts at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27.
Mallory Lewis and Lamb Chop to Perform in Gilbert By Lynette Carrington Multiple generations remember children’s show host and puppeteer Shari Lewis and her beloved sidekick Lamb Chop. When her mom died in 1998, Mallory Lewis took on the loveable task of bringing Lamb Chop back out to the fans and to introduce the sweet character to a new generation. “She was always my ‘little sister,’” stated Lewis of little Lamb Chop. “When mom died, it was either take over Lamb Chop or she was dead, too. I really couldn’t wrap my brain around the thought of losing both my mother and my lamb.” Her audience wasn’t ready to lose Lamb Chop, either. Lewis said that fans are moved by her performance. “People cry. Adults cry,” Lewis said. “My show is 80 percent adults because those are my ‘mom’s kids.’ My show is very much an intelligent show.” In her shows, she even uses some of the original Lamb Chop puppets her mother used. The feisty and intuitive Lamb Chop and her equally as endearing puppeteer will perform their show “A Lamb Chop Celebration” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27. “I show footage from the ages and I tell stories about mom and her performing career as well as performing myself with Lamb Chop,” Lewis said. “It’s my favorite show.” The show includes a sing-along with a Christmas medley, a Hanukkah song, the story of Kwanzaa in rhyme and a Page 10

life-sized Lamb Chop will also take to the stage. Lewis spent many years entertaining for the USO, Fisher House Foundation and other organizations. She was also co-founder of nonprofit Jump for the Cause, which raised more than $2 million for the fight against breast cancer for City of Hope. The group raised funds by performing mass skydiving formations. “Our team has sort of retired,” said Lewis, whose mom died from cancer. Now, Lewis passionately throws her support behind Heifer International, a nonprofit that provides farm animals, clean water and other necessities to people in impoverished countries. Lamb Chop and Lewis will be available to meet and greet fans. “I sign autographs after the show and if anybody wants to meet the real Lamb Chop, they can come,” Lewis explained. “One of the things people really want to do is share their experiences with Lamb Chop with me.” Lewis also offers her personal guarantee for the show: “If they do not have a good time, I will reimburse them for their tickets.” Higley Center for the Performing Arts located at 4132 E. Pecos Rd., Gilbert. Visit www.higleyarts.org or call (480) 279-7194 to purchase tickets, which cost $24 to $46.20. December 2014

Zeper said many of their customers are mothers and daughters who have made it a tradition to start off their Christmas season with the Idea House.

‘Miracle on 34th Street’ Runs Through Christmas
Celebrating Automobiles
By Meghan McCoy The magical story of believing will fill the stage at The Palms Theatre as the iconic story of “Miracle on 34th Street” comes alive in time for the holiday season. Scottsdale’s Janine Smith, who has been in love with “Miracle on 34th Street” for years, was given the opportunity to play Doris Walker this year. “It’s my favorite Christmas show of all time,” she said. “I had the opportunity to audition for it and was thrilled to be able to play the part.” As Doris, Smith plays a Macy’s executive who is in charge of the Thanksgiving parade. “The story starts out with finding a new Santa for the parade,” she said. Danny Karapetian, also a Scottsdale resident, said although he has never seen the movie, he is very excited to play Fred, a lawyer. “It’s such an iconic story,” Karapetian said. “I know the story and the iconic scene where they bring the postal bags into the court room. I don’t want
to watch the movie before the show because I don’t want to be influenced by it. I want to discover the story through the lens of the story we are doing. When we close on Christmas Day maybe I will sit down and watch the movie.” Throughout the play, Smith said Doris lectures her daughter, Susan, to only believe in real things. “She does not want her daughter to believe in the fantasy world where she would get hurt,” she said. At the parade, Karapetian’s character meets Susan, a young girl who does not believe in Santa Claus. He introduces her to the man in red. “To get to be the guy who defends Santa is pretty cool,” he said. Karapetian’s first play was in sixth grade when he played Santa in “What, No Santa?” “Musicals are so accessible to anyone, especially a show like ‘Miracle
on 34th Street,’” he said. The story comes through a lot stronger in musicals than plays sometimes.” Overall, the play, Smith said, leaves audience members in the Christmas spirit. The Palms Theatre is located at 5247 E. Brown Rd., Mesa. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; and 1:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays (including Christmas), Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $15 to $52. For more information, call (480) 924-6260 or www.thepalmstheatre.com. At The Palms Theatre, Chef Mark Belcher will cook up such favorites as pot roast, shrimp pasta and his famous pineapple casserole. In addition, the buffet will also include bleu cheese sliders, tangy chicken wings and sweet and salty maple bacon popcorn for show-only patrons.

By Tim J. Randall The governing board races in Higley Unified School District and Gilbert Public Schools could not have been any different in their outcomes. In Higley, a back-and-forth contest extended almost a week after the election before the final winners were declared, while in Gilbert the outcome was never in question. The rhetoric was spirited, however. The Higley race had four candidates: incumbent President Venessa Whitener, Michelle Anderson, Rebecca Jarman and Greg Wojtovich. Budget issues were the primary focus for the candidates in a district that received the No. 1 Large Public School District rating from the Arizona Department of Education. Whitener secured the highest vote total with 5,552 in maintaining her seat. But the second spot was a far more nip-and-tuck event as Wojtovich and Anderson battled back and forth with Wojtovich behind early on, but then pulling ahead as votes were counted. “It isn’t over until website header says, ‘Official results,’” Wojtovich said as the votes came in. Wojtovich scored the second victory with 4,853 votes in beating out Jarman and Anderson. In Gilbert, five candidates chased the prize in a hotly contested battle for the board’s direction. Before the election, the board was seen as conservative, and had received national attention on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” for a decision to remove references to abortion and
the RU-486 morning-after pill from high school biology textbooks. Other hot-button issues included a budget-spending override measure, as well as common core standards. The results were not clear, despite the divisiveness. Jill Humpherys, the incumbent member, maintained her seat with 22,154 votes, while Dr. J. Charles Santa Cruz netted 20,303 votes in securing the remaining spot vacated by President Staci Burk. Ron Bellus, Dawn Brimhall and Reed Carr finished well off the pace in their efforts to net seat positions. With these victories, the board’s balance has shifted toward a more moderate stance and Humpherys appreciated the result. “I am excited and humbled to have the opportunity to serve on the school board for four more years,” she said. “I am grateful to the 200-plus donors and the many volunteers who made my campaign a success. It was inspiring to see a broad coalition of parents, teachers, staff, community members, business people, police officers and members of all parties who came together to support public education.” Santa Cruz commented on the result in a similar fashion, “Lots of folks were involved, getting our message out that changes needed to be made relative to the governing board. Schools are an economic engine, and teachers and support staff need to be at the center of the governing board agenda. This message resonated very well with voters.”

EAST VALLEY MOMS
East Valley Moms Night—or Day—at the Museum
Story and photo by Kimberly Hosey Recently, my son and I went back in time billions of years. Then we went on a few archeological expeditions, browsed a gallery of modern photography and finally, I put him in jail. We went, of course, to the Arizona Museum of Natural History in Mesa. During a visit there, you and your family can learn about anthropology, archaeology, history, Native American civilizations and many fields of scientific research. Of course, we really went for the dinosaurs. It’s known as the “dinosaur museum,” after all. Some of my and my son’s favorites, however, weren’t the showstoppers like the towering camarasaurus, fearsome tyrannosaurus, or iconic triceratops. While those are amazing and guaranteed kid (and adult) pleasers, we really rejoiced in finding
treasures at the museum that we didn’t know about before: the crazy, horned skull of a “crowned crocodile” that was actually part of a group of mammallike reptiles that lived around 267 million years ago; the spiny, intricately detailed trilobite fossils, part of a group including more than 10,000 species; and the dinosaur juveniles—and nests! If all you want is to marvel at some giants, they’ve got you covered, but there is much more to paleontology, not to mention other branches of natural and social science, and the museum explores many of them. We were captivated by “Origins,” a permanent exhibit that showcases astronomical events through images and displays and teaches visitors how to “look into the past” simply by examining the stars around them. Watch for rare coupons and rebates. During the holidays, you are sure to see some rare coupons, including savings on meat and produce. Snag these when you see them. Also be sure to save any “try-me-free” offers you run across, rebate forms, gift with purchase forms, or any other savings opportunities that come your way. Make inexpensive sides. Some side dishes are quite filling and only cost pennies per serving. Great examples of these would be bread items and potatoes. You can buy boxed corn bread for around 40 cents a box, and you
can buy boxed or real potatoes for mashed potatoes for less than a few dollars. These are tasty, filling sides that don’t cost much and everyone enjoys. Have everyone pitch in. Even if it is just a side dish, rolls or a pie, don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family to bring something to dinner. People love to show off their favorite recipe, too, and it will help cut down the overall cost for your meal. Keep dessert simple. You don’t need an extravagant dessert to finish your meal. Most people will be stuffed by then anyhow! Dollar stores carry ready-made pie crusts and pie filling for just $1 each. Or pick up fresh fruit, serve with ice cream and drizzle with honey for a light refreshing treat. Happy Saving!

And, come on, your kids might whine when you leave places, but it’s not often you hear “Mooom! I want to go back to jail!” Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children 3 to 12, $8 for students 13 and older with an ID, $10 for seniors 65 and older and free for kids 2 and younger. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The museum is closed Mondays and holidays.

What’s Cooking? By Jan D’Atri
Guava-Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Cuban Salsa It was love at first bite—for me and for everyone else at the event catered by Scottsdale Chef Linda Martin. A guava-glazed pork tenderloin with Cuban salsa prepared by Linda was all people could talk about, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the recipe and serve this ultra-flavorful dish to friends and family. Linda is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef who is a Valley favorite with more than 14 years of experience. She is a popular chef at Sweet Basil Cooking School and Gourmetware in Scottsdale, the featured chef for
Dacor Luxury Appliances and the owner of her own catering company, Linda’s Dinner Designs. I’ve had many dishes created by her, but the guava-glazed tenderloin has become an all-time favorite. This month, if you’re looking for an exquisite meal for family and guests or just an easy weeknight meal, you can’t go wrong with this pork specialty. Thank you, chef, for sharing it! For more information about Chef Linda Martin or to reach her, visit www.lindasdinnerdesigns.com

cup. Add the soy sauce, ketchup, cayenne pepper and salt. Cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool. 2. Set the pork in a 9 inch-by-13 inch baking dish. Brush all sides of the pork with half of the glaze. 3. Light grill to medium high. Grill the pork, turning and brushing with the remaining glaze until browned on all sides, about 15 minutes, or until cooked through (with an instant-read thermometer 150 degrees). Transfer the cooked pork to a cutting board and let rest 10 minutes. 4. While the pork is resting make the salsa: In a bowl, mix the cilantro, oil, vinegar, onion, chives, jalapenos and garlic. Season with salt. Transfer to a serving bowl. 5. To serve: Slice the pork into quarter- to half-inch slices. Arrange on a serving platter. Pour any accumulated juices over the pork. Henhouse Café on the town

As a restaurant reviewer, it is so fun to walk into a new restaurant and feel instantly at home. The Henhouse Café on Higley and Guadalupe roads is a true family restaurant where Mo and Brett Grebe and their three adult children have gone to great lengths to make their country-style café warm and welcoming. The inside is decorated with antiques and repurposed items such as coffee bags for curtains, tin buckets for lights, old windows for chalkboards, license plates and even Mo’s old red wagon for decoration. I especially liked the 20-person banquet room on the side of the main restaurant that can be reserved for family gatherings, birthday parties and other celebrations. Some of the menu changes daily as new recipes are added to the specials. The one most preferred by hungry diners are added to the permanent comm. spotlight

Mo and Brett came to our table and told us about their dreams for this restaurant, the third one they have owned since Brett ended his 14-year professional baseball career. Their goals are to serve quality comfort food, made from the freshest ingredients with the highest standards of cleanliness. They are busy doing this and I was surprised to hear that they use 5,000 eggs and 2,500 pounds of red potatoes each month. We looked over the three-page menu with an additional two pages of breakfast and lunch specials and selected the strawberry cheesecake French toast ($7.29), the grilled chicken sandwich ($8.49) and the chicken-fried chicken ($8.99). The Law of Gift-Giving law talk
meet your neighbor
The holidays are upon us. Soon children will be writing their letters to Santa and imagining what treasures might be left under the Nathaniel H. Christmas tree. Wadsworth Over the next several weeks, people of all ages will be trying to come up with the perfect gift idea, the one that will make a child squeal with delight, an older parent weep with gratitude, a less-fortunate person feel loved, or, perhaps, a significant other fall in love again with the giver. Whatever a person’s opinions are regarding the commercialism of the holidays, most people agree that giving is a good thing. So what is it that makes a gift a gift? Well, it turns out there are laws that define when something is considered a gift and therefore the property of the person receiving it. In Arizona, people make a gift of their property when they satisfy two requirements: (1) They manifest a clear and unmistakable intention to give the property to another, and (2) They pass full possession and control of the property to the person for whom the gift is intended. The absence of one of these requirements will defeat the receiver’s claim that a gift was made. But if both requirements are met, the giver of the gift cannot take it back. Questions of whether or not a gift was made do not typically arise from presents from Santa. (As even a child can understand, if Santa left a package with your name on it, he both intended to make the gift and gave you biz box

possession and control of it.) But the issue does arise in other contexts. For example, courts have decided many cases related to whether money deposited into a bank account or a piece of real estate (such as a house on 34th Street) was intended as a gift. The evidence may be conflicting, but always the courts are trying to determine if the two requirements noted above are present. If not, then the person claiming the gift may be forced to return it. Other rules apply to gifts to be made at the time of the giver’s death, such as through a will. Despite an expressed intent to give a gift upon death, the giver can revoke the gift any time before passing away. Also, a gift may be voided by a showing of fraud or duress. (This doesn’t mean you should take away your child’s presents if you learn after the fact that he or she wasn’t “good for goodness sake.”) None of this is likely to change your gift-giving practices this season. But if you do encounter a serious question related to the law of gifts, please feel free to contact Rowley Chapman & Barney Ltd., Attorneys at Law. Brothers Create Innovative Minimalist Wallet financially speaking
The old saying states, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” But in the case of Spine, a titanium minimalist wallet, brothers were the necessity of invention. Josh and Caleb Barclay, who have complementary skill sets, joined forces to create a unique and functional wallet. “When I was in my car or at work sitting in a chair, my wallet was too big,” said Gilbert resident Josh Barclay. “It started hurting my back when I was sitting the wrong way for multiple hours during the day, and that wasn’t good.” Caleb Barclay added, “My brother came up to me one day and wanted to take a shot at a minimalist wallet. He’s a machinist and I’m a branding consultant and we just decided to talk through some designs.” Within days, the duo had developed on the town

designs and decided that lightweight titanium was the perfect material for the water and corrosion-resistant product. As a CNC machinist, Josh knows CAM and CAD software and did much technical research on how best to create the Spine wallet. He also handles each wallet to ensure quality control. Spine’s design removes the bulk of a typical wallet and has been pared down to two sturdy anodized titanium plates with a thick band holding them together. Spine comes in five colors and conveniently doubles as a bottle opener. There is also an exclusive design called Damascus that, instead of titanium, was made with layers of folded steel. All 20 that were made sold immediately during Spine’s Kickstarter campaign. If there is a demand for the Damascus, events calendar
