The Gilbert Days Rodeo is set for Friday, Nov. 14, through Sunday, Nov. 16, at Welcome Home Ranch in Gilbert.
Celebrate Town’s History During Gilbert Days A celebration that began in the 1950s, after the Town of Gilbert paved the last road in downtown, is still going strong through Gilbert Days. The nonprofit Gilbert Promotion Corporation hosts the Gilbert Days Pony Express Mail Ride and Gilbert Days Rodeo. The celebration begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, with the Pony Express Mail Ride The Pony Express Mail Ride begins at 8 a.m. at the U.S. Post Office at 137 E. Elliot Rd. The ride includes the delivery of a personalized letter from Mayor John Lewis inviting others to Gilbert Days. Residents will receive the letter the following day. Next up is the rodeo, which will be held Friday, Nov. 14, Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, will include bucking bulls, barrel races and a Lil Dudes Mutton Bustin’ Rodeo, a kids’ rodeo for 4 to 7 year olds riding sheep. The rodeo will be held once again at Welcome Home Ranch, a relatively new location for the event. GPC volunteer Julee Brady said the Gilbert Days Rodeo was held on Val Vista Drive and Ray Road for 28 years, until 2011 when GPC received a letter from the Environmental Protection Agency. The property used for the rodeo was an old landfill and because GPC watered the grounds to keep the dust down, the letter stated that the organization was responsible for cleaning the landfill. Because that would cost $2 million, the nonprofit began looking for a different location. The rodeo was held at Vertuccio

It’s the 30th year that we are doing this run.” The following weekend, an inaugural half marathon and a 10K will take place through Gilbert at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. Race Director Yvette Rangel said the proceeds from registration, which can be done at www.gilbertmarathon. com, will be used to build a shade structure for a Gilbert playground. The annual Gilbert Days Parade, featuring 125 participants, will continue the day of festivities at 9 a.m. running southbound on Gilbert Road from Guadalupe Road to Elliot Road. “We typically get around 10,000 spectators, give or take, including participants,” Leppert said. Paisley Pumpkin Celebrates Holidays with Events By Kelsey Sederstrom The weather has cooled down and the holiday season is just around the corner. The Paisley Pumpkin, which hosts an array of free family-friendly events, is taking full advantage of the change. Paisley Pumpkin’s holiday festival will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Dana Park in Mesa. Its holiday street fairs will be held at SanTan Village from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays Nov. 8, Nov. 15 and Nov. 22. The streets of these outdoor shopping centers will be lined with 50 local vendors offering holiday gifts, decor and food. There will also be entertainment for kids as November marks the arrival of Santa at SanTan Village. “The Paisley Pumpkin events have the most unique vendors,” said Kapri Roberts, owner of Miss Thing Bling. “It’s free for consumers and has a family-friendly environment.” A raffle for HopeKids, an organization that fosters a supportive community for families who have a child with cancer or another lifethreatening medical conditions, will be held at each of the fairs at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available at $1 each or six for $5. There will be more than 100 raffle prizes given away at each event, including a one-hour massage, jewelry, restaurant gift cards, candles and more. Kelly Kucera organized Paisley Pumpkin in 2011 in hopes of promoting small businesses in the community. A small business owner herself, Kucera runs a small children’s organic clothing line. She sold her November 2014
goods at festivals and fairs and then realized there was a lack of similar events in the East Valley. From the beginning, the community welcomed Kucera’s idea of Paisley Pumpkin with open arms. “As a home business owner, I rely on events like this to make money for my family,” said Pat Connelly, independent designer for Origami Owl Jewelry. “This is my busy time of year and The Paisley Pumpkin events are my favorite and by far my biggest income.” In addition to the street fair, SanTan Village’s fourth annual Holiday Balloon Glow, presented by Superstition Springs Lexus, will accompany Pumpkin Paisley’s Gift Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 6. Both events are free. The Gift Bazaar by Paisley Pumpkin will begin at 1 p.m. and Balloon Glow will start at 5 p.m. Both events end at 9 p.m. The outdoor events will be held at the northeast corner of Williams Field Road and SanTan Village Parkway, south of Dick’s Sporting Goods. Balloon Glow will feature 18 hot air balloons from Aerial Solutions. In the past, balloons have been presented as ladybugs, butterflies, bumblebees and a beaver. Guests also have the option of taking a balloon ride with tethered balloon rides at $25 for adults and $15 for children 10 and younger. The Gift Bazaar will include more than 60 vendors selling holiday gifts, decor and food. For more information about vendors at the holiday festival, street fair or bazaar, contact info@ thepaisleypumpkin.com.

Girl Scouts: Serving Others, Building Skills
By Tracy House They may be best known for their cookies, but there is more to Girl Scouts than the annual fundraiser. And for troop leader Alanna Iannone, her daughters have benefited in far more ways than just selling cookies. Iannone is the leader for two troops: a Cadettes’ troop with her oldest daughter Brianna, 12, and a Junior troop with Bailey, 9. Girl Scouts are grade appropriate: Daisies are kindergarten and first; Brownies are second and third; Juniors are fourth and fifth; and Cadettes are sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Girls can continue as Ambassadors and Seniors until they are 18 years old. Founded more than 100 years ago by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, there are more than 2.3 million
girls who have taken the promise, “On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And, to live by the Girl Scout Law.” Iannone has been a troop leader for five years, but was a parent helper for three years prior to that. She was a Girl Scout through fifth grade. Girls interested in joining Girl Scouts can check with their school or go to the Girl Scout website, www.girlscoutsaz. org to be placed in the right troop. Iannone says most of the girls who join are from word-of-mouth. There is $15 registration fee for the year. “Most troops have additional dues,” Iannone said. “Usually fairly modest.” She mentioned her dues included the uniform, but that depends on the troop.

Not only will this help to cut down on your cost, but it also allows guests to share their own specialties. Consolidate Heat! Heat items up together in the oven after the turkey is done and have everything done at the same time, in less time. If you have a toaster oven, you can try heating up side dishes there as well. Pumpkin Cookies Two Ways

Chocolate chip cookies may be America’s favorite treat for most of the year, but they’re going to have to move over this month—or at least share the stage—with the real star in November, the pumpkin cookie. Ultra moist, simple to make and so wonderful to give as gifts, the pumpkin cookie is the treat, at least in my family, that everyone looks forward to in the fall. I’ve shared with you my two favorite recipes. The first one makes whipping up a batch of these pumpkin delights
super easy because a box of yellow cake mix eliminates a few extra steps. The second recipe adds the beloved chocolate bits into a rich pumpkin batter. The secret to the moistest cookies ever is to let the cookies cool a bit, and then immediately put them in an airtight container. Enjoy a beautiful platter of pumpkin cookies or give them as scrumptious gifts from your kitchen! Let the holiday season officially begin!
Pumpkin Cake Cookies 1 (15 oz.) canned pure pumpkin (Not pumpkin pie mix) 1 egg 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 box yellow cake mix 1/2 cup rolled oats 2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (or 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice plus 1 teaspoon cinnamon) 1 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup dried cranberries, optional Vanilla or cream cheese frosting, optional
In a large bowl, combine wet ingredients. Add in dry ingredients and mix well. Drop by tablespoons onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Ice with vanilla or cream cheese frosting if desired. Store in airtight container.

Located in the heart of downtown Gilbert, the adorable Farmhouse restaurant happily serves breakfast and lunch every day to eager and hungry guests. The mother-anddaughter team of Sylvia Hilligardt and Milli Smith opened its first eatery in 1989 in an actual farmhouse just 2 miles south. This location, however, has just as much charm and history as the original. The current location, in The Creed Building at 228 N. Gilbert Rd., was built in 1918 and the original adobe walls and wide plank wooden floors add authenticity and beauty to this little jewel. With ample parking and little traffic, this historic area is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely meal. comm. spotlight

We were quickly greeted by Sarah and seated at one of the dozen or so tables. The shabby chic decor included antiques on the wall, mismatched table cloths, chandeliers, wooden floors and exposed beams. Crayons and a princess picture were cheerfully delivered to our granddaughter, Hailey, who was so excited to eat breakfast with “Papa Lou” and “Grandma.” We looked over the menu and our mouths watered at the multitude of items from steak and eggs to 24 different omelets and scrambles. It was difficult, but we selected the sausage, bacon and potato omelet ($9.25), the Belgian waffle ($6.25) and a Famous Farmhouse Cinnamon Roll ($4.50). Our food arrived very quickly considering the eatery was crowded. Lou dug right in to his huge omelet meet your neighbor

Can We Ever Trust An Anonymous Tip? law talk
meet your neighbor
As a seasoned Arizona criminal defense attorney, I have learned that deceit often lurks behind anonymity. I think Fezzik said Brian D. Strong it best in the movie, “The Princess Bride,” when he told Inigo Montoya to be careful in his dealings with the “Man in Black” because, “People in masks cannot be trusted.” The Sixth Amendment affords us the right to confront our accusers because convictions should be based on trustworthy testimony. The language of the Arizona Constitution is even more precise by giving every accused the right “to meet the witnesses against him [or her] face to face,” without a mask. (Ariz. Const. Art. II, § 24.) Given these constitutional mandates, one would think that anonymous, hearsay testimony should rarely find its way into our criminal courts. Yet with the advent of cellphones, the frequency of anonymous statements being used as evidence has increased dramatically. As a result, federal and state courts have struggled to define exactly what types of anonymous tips are permissible and which are not. The law does not require police officers to know everything upfront. Brief “investigative stops” are legal when there is “a particularized and objective basis for suspecting” criminal activity. (United States v. Cortez, 449 U.S. 411, 417-419 (1981)). For example, a police officer may suspect that a certain driver is intoxicated but probable cause for an arrest will not exist until the vehicle biz box

has been stopped and a face to face interview is complete. Reasonable suspicion to justify an initial stop can be based on • The officer’s own observations; • The comments of a known citizen • An anonymous tip. The observations of police officers and known citizens are always subject to cross-examination and can, therefore, be tested for credibility. Yet, I have never once had the pleasure of cross-examining Mr. or Ms. Anonymous. The general rule is that anonymous tips that are “contemporaneous” in time and contain some “indicia of reliability” will justify an investigative stop. Contemporaneous in time is an easy legal standard to understand. Deciding exactly what creates an “indicia of reliability” has been the equivalent of a judicial quagmire. There are literally hundreds of conflicting appellate decisions on this subject. In many of those decisions, the judges themselves could not agree and written dissenting opinions are commonplace. Given the complex legal factors involved, if you or a loved one is ever arrested because of an anonymous tip, please call our office at (480) 833-1113 immediately.
