Freestone Park received a new playground in April. While enhancing the Town of Gilbert, the project provides a place for youngsters to enjoy.

Gilbert Named Playful City USA for 8th Year

Boasting 22 parks and four recreation sites, Gilbert was recently named Playful City USA by the nonprofit organization KaBOOM! KaBOOM!, in partnership with the Humana Foundation, named 212 cities and towns across the United States as the 2014 Playful City USA. The program honors those that provide easy access for children to have balanced and active play in their communities. “Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa are great examples of Playful City USA communities because they have made it a priority to make play accessible to all children,” said Myeta Moon, KaBOOM! director, city initiatives. “These communities have been recognized more than six times each. It’s important to recognize and celebrate their dedication to ensuring all kids get the balanced and active play they need to thrive.” Gilbert Parks and Recreation Director Rod Buchanan said the town has received the Playful City USA designation on eight occasions. “It’s our mission to keep kids active,” he said of the motto “No Child Left Inside.” “I truly believe we are in the business of making people’s lives better and to give them opportunities to have fun and be healthy.” Buchanan said the park system and recreation program must impact the community in order to receive

the designation. He said it stretches from capital improvement programs to working with the community through focus groups and implementing input that is given. For example, Freestone Park received a new playground to replace the aging one, as well as enhanced lights for the ball fields—at a cost of more than $1 million. “The amenities are important to people,” he said. A park should be replaced every 15 years, he said. The Town will renovate nine more parks this year. Parks officials will look into such increasingly popular features as walking and bike trails. “Those are the kind of things that people are looking for,” he explained. Buchanan said it is important to have a well-maintained and wellmarked trail, so individuals can enjoy the outdoors. “We provide safe areas for people to do their activities,” Buchanan said. The Town of Gilbert also offers forward-thinking elements for its park system with amenities that encourage people to attend one of the recreation centers. The Freestone Recreation Center has such amenities as an indoor walking trail and a 42-foot climbing wall. “We definitely want people to come to our recreation centers and experience what we have to offer,” he said. The East Valley Young Marine Unit was recognized by the Drug Enforcement Agency for its commitment to alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, not just in its schools and neighborhoods but for the impact it has in Mesa, Tempe and surrounding communities. The Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Award is awarded to the Young Marine Unit that best exemplifies the qualities and principles for which Camarena gave his life to keep Americans off drugs. There are more than 300 units in the program, and only six units were given this award, named after the deceased DEA agent. Besides participating in Red Ribbon Week every October, all the Young Marine staff and senior Young Marines are Project Alert certified. The Project ALERT curriculum was created and tested by RAND, the nation’s leading think tank on drug policy. Developed over a 10-year period, Project ALERT addresses the pro-drug mindset of teens and effectively increases their

likelihood to remain drug-free. This curriculum gives the Young Marines the tools they need to close the gate on drugs and to be able to stand in front of their peers and educate them on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. “We at DEA were very happy and proud to find that there were young people in in Phoenix doing such good work in reducing the demand for drugs on our streets,” said Special Agent Shannon Scheel, Phoenix Division Drug Enforcement Agency. The Young Marines is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age 8 through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and selfdiscipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Desert Cross Builds Homes in Mexico By Lynette Carrington

When the heat was just starting to rise in Arizona, 33 members of Desert Cross Lutheran Church headed south to Tecate, Mexico, on a mission to build homes in one of the area’s poorest neighborhoods. “We built two homes from start to finish,” said Chad Diegle, the church’s youth ministries director. “It takes 16 to 17 people per home. The first day is spent mixing by hand to cover an 11 by 22 slab.” The homes are simple, without utilities because they are usually unavailable. However, the structures are sturdy and designed to protect families from the elements. While the slab is being built, another small crew assembles the frame. The next morning, the framed walls are secured, placed upward and leveled. The roof is installed in sections and the walls are finished with stucco. The building supplies and larger tools are provided by the Christian-based

nonprofit Amor Ministries, with which Diegle coordinates the mission. A veteran of the San Diego-based program, Diegle went on an Amor mission as a 17-year-old living in Albuquerque. He enjoyed his experience so much that he offers the opportunity to the Desert Cross congregation. Youth and other members of the church have been traveling to Mexico frequently since 2001. Of this year’s group of 33, onethird were teenagers. “Amor Ministries’ goal is to partner with the local pastors in Mexico and find families in need,” Diegle said. “The experience is profound, seeing poverty at that level, making a difference building something and using your hands. All that just culminated in me making that a priority for my youth group.” Allegra Vieux, field specialist with Amor Ministries, assisted the Desert Cross group.

“Desert Cross was an absolute blast to work with,” Vieux said. “You could tell they genuinely care for others just through the way they interacted with each other. Whether they were joking around on the worksite or brainstorming ways they could connect with the families they were building for, it was evident that they love to serve... can’t wait to have them back.” In Mexico, Diegle was able to see beyond the poverty and the lack of utilities. “Is there joy down there or does joy come from having some stability in

Gilbert Girl Crowned National American Miss Arizona By Tracy House

Earning the title of 2014 National American Miss Arizona hasn’t fazed 6-year-old Alena Mascarenas. She still likes to play baseball, do crafty projects and swim and play with friends. In November, however, Alena will head to Anaheim, California, to represent Arizona in the National American Miss Pageant. This was the second year Alena has participated, said Alena’s mother, Gina Kent-Mascarenas. “We did it last year and we ended up (going) to nationals...She did it again this year and won. We were totally shocked.” Gina said Alena was nominated for an open casting call and she and her husband checked out the organization. “We were really impressed with the organization, what they focused on and they’re really geared toward building the girls’ confidence and long-term skills, such as interview, public speaking, community service.

So we said, ‘Why not, let’s see if she likes it.’” Alena competed with 88 other girls in her age group, 4 to 6 years old. A naturally outgoing girl, Gina said Alena liked doing the pageant. “This was all a new experience. She loved it. Our main thing was we want her to have fun. We just kind of go with the flow.” The best part about being in the pageants, Alena said, is, “I like being able to wear pretty gowns.” Her talent is going to be singing. The worst she said is her petticoat falling down on stage. A first grader at EDUPRIZE in Gilbert, Alena wants to continue the pageants, “Because I get to meet new friends and wear pretty gowns.” Tres, Alena’s father, is active duty U.S. Army in Louisiana, but will be escorting her at the national pageant, which will include an interview and speaking for a minute about herself. “I want to be a dolphin trainer and I want to volunteer for Feed My

Starving Children.” Gina explained it’s tough to find charities that allow children to volunteer, but Alena has helped pack food boxes at Feed My Starving Children and would like to spend time at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She’s also available for appearances and other opportunities to help in the community. The only girl on her Dragons baseball team, Alena said she has made a lot of friends. Gina is quick to note that there is a stereotype about pageants, but this is not something they’ve experienced. “There’s only a handful of them that are actually respectable and not a glitz…this is not a Honey Boo Boo pageant.” This is an all-natural pageant Gina explained. “They don’t allow makeup. The Arete Preparatory Academy football team’s motto is, “100 percent all the time, every time.”

Arete Football Team Boasts Female Coaching Duo By Lynette Carrington At Arete Preparatory Academy, character, integrity and honesty are expected in the classroom and on the football field. Amy Arnold and Angie Darnell are upholding those beliefs as, reportedly, the only female high school football coaching team in the country. “We make a good team,” said Arnold, athletic director and head football coach at Arete Prep, formerly known as Mesa Preparatory Academy. But their coaching extends beyond the playing field. “Our athletic motto, when we say it, we chant it: ‘100 percent all the time, every time,’” she said. “It’s not just 100-percent effort on the field. It’s giving 100 percent being the best player you can be, the best student, the best son, the best brother, the best classmate at school...The lessons they learn on the football field and being a member of the football team will hopefully reach far beyond the confines of the field and there are a lot of life lessons to be learned in athletics.” Arnold and Darnell are veterans of the Women’s Professional Football League’s Arizona Caliente and Phoenix Prowlers, and the boys they coach appreciate their experience and knowledge. Arete Prep senior Jack Kremer has been playing for five years under Arnold and Darnell. “One of the things I’ve always liked about Coach Arnold and Coach Angie is how much they push us in practice and in games,” he said. “This year I’m excited to take on a September 2014

leadership role a little bit and we have a lot of hungry young guys coming to practice and working really hard.” Arete recently opened its new campus at 4525 E. Baseline Rd. in Gilbert. With the new facility and more robust sports schedule, Arnold brought on two new members to the high school football coaching staff— Dan Austin, lineman coach, and Jim Ellison, offensive coordinator. “I like the fresh ideas that Coach Jim has,” Arnold noted. “I like his offensive plans. It will be a change for me not calling every single offensive play. But in order for me to release those reins, I have to be able to trust him and I do have a lot of trust in him so far.” The coaching staff and players are looking forward to utilizing their new practice field that is tucked behind the school campus. “That is my sanctuary out there,” Arnold said. “The grass is growing in beautifully and we’re very excited to have such a beautiful field.”

started doing some research to find out more about the validity of a 2,000-year-old document called the Bible. Is it really an unreliable mess, due to centuries of writing, rewriting, and translation? I was surprised to learn in my personal research that what I had been told by others about the Bible wasn’t true. So this got me to reading. Reading what? The BIBLE. I was told that Romans is a good place to start, because this is the best picture of how our relationship with God is today, but I didn’t stop there. When I got to the book of Hebrews, I was blown away. This is where I learned that I had been lied to. As I read, I found that God loves me regardless of my behavior; that I have His favor and blessing, not because of what I do, but because of my faith in Jesus. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The lie came from living in a world where men determine who is, and who is not, acceptable to God. They say, “Look what he did. Okay, now he can’t come in, or be part of this event, or do this thing in the church,” which is the same as God also refusing to accept us based on our actions. But the Bible says something different. Hebrews is very clear about whom our Priest is and how the temple works, with all of its traditions and procedures. So here is the part where I bare my soul. I got my girlfriend pregnant. We got married later, but we weren’t allowed to get married in the church. Why? We had sinned. And I felt like God had rejected me. I was taught that sin cannot enter the Holy Place, and that the Holy Place must be kept sacred from the impurities of man. But according to the book of Hebrews, after Jesus died, He went through the temple in heaven and redeemed us all, so that we can boldly stand in God’s

On the web at www.NearbyNews.com

presence in the Most Holy Place, free from sin and condemnation. Jesus replaced the old man-made priesthood forever. A man-made priesthood may reject me, but the High Priest, Jesus, has accepted me and called me righteous! According to 1 Corinthians 3:16, our bodies are the temple of Holy Spirit. He dwells in anyone who receives Jesus Christ, the only son of God who died for our sins, as Lord and Savior. The fear that my sin should not be allowed in the Holy Place doesn’t make sense with what we know about the Spirit; the Spirit is within me. He wouldn’t stay in me, if I were somehow tainted by sin. He wouldn’t remain with anyone, because we are all sinful on some level. So if that was true, then Christ died for nothing. Hebrews says this: Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 w let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:19-22) 19

We are sanctified by the shed blood of Christ, and God, in his omnipotence, created a scenario where anyone who believes in Jesus can enter the Most Holy Place. And it’s not based on what we’ve done, but instead, on what Christ did. If this all sounds weird to you, start where I did. Read the Bible, start in Romans, and then get ready! Preparing Your Child for the First Eye Doctor Visit

By Tracy House Checking children’s eyesight may seem like something that can wait until they are in school. But developmentally, the sooner children have their eyes evaluated, the better. Dr. Lisa Mihora, an ophthalmologist with Banner Health, offered some insight for parents about visiting the eye doctor. Mihora said newborn children should be evaluated if they are born prematurely. “There is no age that is too early to do an eye exam,” Mihora said. “If there was an infection or fetal distress during pregnancy, the child should also be seen early on. “The other question we always have is, ‘What is the family eye history?’ Specifically, what we’re looking for

with that is if there is any history in mom, dad or siblings.” Strabismus (when the eyes are not properly aligned) and amblyopia (lazy eye) are two hereditary eye conditions. From the ages birth to 3, unless there is an indication of an eye condition, ophthalmologists rely on the pediatrician for eye care, Mihora said. “The bottom line, though, is if there’s any question, it’s never too early.” The American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus recommends the first official visit should be between ages 3 and 5. “Prior to starting school is the recommendation,” Mihora said. She explained the reason for early

screening is to diagnose problems at a younger age. Preparing a child for an eye doctor visit is important. The first thing the doctor should do is interact with the child. Using “fun” visual tools, the eye doctor can evaluate the child and look for responses to visual cues, moving eyes up and down and left to right. The next step is to check the child’s 3-D vision. “There will be Dr. Lisa Mihora bunnies jumping off the page,” she said. “If you have good 3-D vision, it’s telling you that both eyes are working really well together, and both eyes have really good vision. Because to see those cues, to know that something is coming off the page at you, you’ve got

to have at least 20/50 to 20/60 in each eye.” Checking vision one eye at a time and sometimes together using letters, numbers, pictures or tumbling E’s, depending on a child’s verbal skills, is the next step in screening. Next would be a glasses’ prescription check. Later, doctors will dilate the eye to look at the back of it. “It also helps to look for a glasses’ prescription on a nonverbal child or child less than 1 year old with actually using the drops,” she said. “There’s actually no age too young to check a glasses’ prescription.” The drops can be traumatic for a child. Life can be a bumpy road. Some bumps leave us gleeful and squealing with delight. And some leave deep bruises that we think may never heal. If Eva Dwight you’re a parent, you may have found yourself wishing you could find some kind of emotional bubble wrap that would protect your kids from those awful bumps. There actually is such a product, by the way. It’s called resilience. What causes some children to bounce back from a tough experience, while others seem to crumble at the slightest sign of stress? Angela Duckworth, researcher at Penn State University, refers to resilience as grit. The word evokes images of children playing rough and tumble in the dirt, dusting off their skinned knees and racing off to their next adventure. Tough cookies, those kids. I also picture persistent students asking questions and coming in for extra help until they understand... athletes committing extra hours to practice that results in mastery over their bodies during those crucial moments of competition...kids standing tall in the face of meanness or peer pressure. Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, in his book “Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings,” defines resilience as the ability to recover from setbacks, the quality of bouncing back. Resilient people: • see challenges as opportunities • don’t seek problems, but understand that they will ultimately be strengthened from them • seek solutions rather than engaging in self-doubt, catastrophic thinking, or a mindset of victimization • are equipped to navigate a stressful, complicated world pasta vixen

• push their limits and learn from their mistakes. Ginsburg encourages parents to develop resilience in their children using the seven C’s as their guide: competence; confidence; connection; character; contribution; coping; and control. Kids who have these assets become adults who can take on the world. Growing these assets in our children means being aware of our purpose, and how we can live that in the moment. If I want my children to be capable, I need to find ways for them to learn skills—school skills, housekeeping skills, yard skills, people skills, selfmanagement skills. I need to step back and allow them to practice those skills with ever-increasing levels of competence, and not do too much for them just because it’ll look better if I do it instead. As they develop competence, they will gain confidence and develop character, while making a contribution to our home and family. If I manage my parenting challenges effectively, my children will feel a connection to me, and they’ll feel supported as they cope with their own challenges, which will, hopefully, result in the realization of the power and control that they have over their lives. If we try to keep our kids from experiencing the pain of life’s bumps, we will grow adults who can’t stand up without leaning on us. Instead, we must teach skills to soften the blow and speed the healing so they can push through and move forward. We must give our kids resilience. It’s bubble wrap for life. What’s Cooking? By Jan D’Atri

Italian Crème Cake I love this recipe. Love, love, love it. Elaine Nall’s Italian Crème Cake is just plain crazy out-of-this-world delicious. Period. I got my hands on it a few years ago, and it’s always on my short list of favorite desserts. The recipe was given to Elaine, a longtime Scottsdale educator, more than 40 years ago, and it has withstood the “friends and family favorite” test of time. It’s apparently the most requested dessert at Nall family birthdays, anniversaries, holiday gatherings and even at Elaine’s church group—the one that has met for four decades every Christmas for a white elephant

sale. I’m just happy that when daughter-in-law Donna Nall quietly mentioned to me that Elaine was famous in the family for this cake, I paid attention. In between three ever-so-richtasting layers of buttermilk cake is a luscious slather of cream cheese and pecan icing. The combination is either perfectly sinful or heavenly; I just haven’t quite decided which. Now that we’re heading into fall harvest and baking season, Elaine’s Italian Crème Cake is a must! A big thanks to Donna for sharing a family treasure. And, Elaine is not Italian, but a true Texan, so, “Buon appetito, y’all!”

Italian Crème Cake 2 cups flour 2 cups white sugar 1 stick butter (1/2 cup), softened 1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening 5 eggs, separated 1 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut (use up to 2 cups if desired.)

• Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. • Grease three 8-inch round cake pans. (Line with parchment paper if desired) • Set aside. • Separate eggs and beat egg whites to form still peaks. • Put sugar, butter and shortening in mixing bowl and blend until fluffy. • Add vanilla and yolks to batter and blend well. • Add baking soda to buttermilk and let set for a few minutes (needs to be in a container larger than 1 cup because it will foam). • Add flour and buttermilk alternately into mixture until blended. Do not overbeat. • Add coconut and mix until incorporated into batter. • Fold egg whites into batter. • Pour batter into the three 8-inch cake pans, spread batter evenly.

• Bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until done. Cool in pans for 10 minutes and remove to wire rack to cool completely. Cream Cheese Frosting 2 (8-ounce) packages of cream cheese softened to room temperature 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened 1 (1 pound) box powdered sugar 2 cups chopped pecans 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Put cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar in mixer. Blend until creamy. • Add vanilla and chopped nuts. Add frosting in between cake layers and then frost top and sides. Note: This cake is delicious cold, so it can be made in advance. It also freezes well. September 2014

Family law is evolving. Millennials are the driving force. (Millennials are those reaching adulthood around the year 1980Paul S. Rowley 2000.) The actual definition of marriage is at the forefront. It is called the “beta marriage.” So what is a “beta marriage”? Beta was the latest release in the software cycle. You may have heard the terminology “a beta test.” In a “beta marriage,” you “couple”—a strange word to use in such a special and sacred relationship such as marriage—for two years. It’s basically a two-year trial period. At the end of two years, you can just “uncouple” or, alternatively, you can formalize and really commit, not just try each other out. Surprisingly, 43 percent of the millennials support the notion of a two-year beta trial marriage. If they “uncouple” after the two years, there would be no divorce, no paperwork. Not good for a divorce attorney! But, really bad for the couple. Thirty-seven percent of millennials favor the “real estate marriage.” Just like a mortgage, we obtain a marriage license for 10, 15 or 30 years or an adjustable term so we can bail at any time! Upon expiration of the term, the marriage is uncoupled. No divorce, no attorneys. The “presidential marriage,” which 21 percent favor, is a four-year arrangement and then poof! You are uncoupled or you can recommit, but only for four more years.

And 10 percent even favor the “multiple partner model.” Marriage can be with more than one partner, each who fulfills some need in your life! Statistics show millennials cohabitate more, delay marriage until later in life, and even believe divorce is a positive alternative to marital difficulties. From a legal perspective, I can tell you the unintended consequences of redefining marriage will be disastrous. If you are married, make it work if you can! If you are not married, don’t be discouraged. If someone suggests a “beta marriage,” run! That person might just have a problem with commitment. Divorce is always hard on both parents, the children, extended family, and your pocketbook. Adding different categories of marriage to our statutes like “beta,” “real estate,” “presidential” and “multiple partner” is a legal train wreck. If you do have family issues that require court or legal involvement, give us a call. But if you can hang in there, that is even better. Paul S.
