n the outside I was perfect, even commended: perfect wife, perfect mom, and perfect friend. Still, on the inside, I was in prison. I don’t know how else to describe what I was feeling. No matter how hard I tried to be good, it was never enough. I listened at the church I attended, trying to hear all the things I needed to do so I could be good enough. “I just need to try harder,” I’d convince myself. I shared with a friend how I was feeling, and in return, I got a blank stare. I was feeling so alone. All of the things I was taught to do―and boy, there were a lot of things―I did them, but I still felt empty. I wanted so badly to please God, but on the inside, I was wasting away. I felt like God still wasn’t happy with me. I wasn’t happy with me. I hid behind my smile and I was suffocating. No matter how hard I tried to be good enough, I just wasn’t; there was always some failure glaring at me in the mirror. I found myself being driven to places that I shouldn’t go. I just wanted to medicate my emotions. But then, one day, I opened up the Bible. I don’t know whether I was trying to appease God, or if I was trying to find out what I was doing wrong and what other hoops I could jump through in order to be a good person, but I began to read the Bible in secret. And do you know what I found? Freedom. I have read Romans chapters three through eight 20 times now. It’s like this great big secret that no one in my world is talking about, and it’s right there staring me in the face. The answer: Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart 20

Page 4

from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,” (Romans 3:20-22)

And I find the same message in 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, Ephesians; it’s everywhere in the New Testament! I’m not the first one to try and be good enough by my behavior; and I’m not the first to fail at it. No one can do it. We are all destined to fail at being good enough on our own. But there is hope; there is a righteousness that I can have. It’s the one that comes simply by faith in Jesus. He did it all for me. He was perfect. That was the point. He was perfect, but He died like a sinner, so that even in my sin I am made perfect in Christ. Until now, I had seen and heard stories of people being rejected by the church and their families, because they weren’t good enough. And if the church rejected them, then certainly God was also rejecting them. So then I had thought that God must also be rejecting me, or He was getting ready to. But the Bible gave me a different message; God loved us while we were still sinners. Now goodness is easier, since it’s not a chore. When I learned that God has grace for me, I finally began to have grace for myself. I have since found a church that teaches the Bible and its message of grace, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I still go to church every week. I try to be a good mom, a good wife, and a good friend. But now, things are different; the smile on my face is finally coming from the inside. I don’t have to hide anymore. Living Word Bible Church www.livingwordonline.org

Gilbert-based developer Blandford Homes donated this new house at Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa.

Blandford Homes Builds ‘Bonnie’s Place’ at Sunshine Acres By Tracy House For 60 years Sunshine Acres has been caring for children, and recently Blandford Homes made caring for a few more kids a possibility. Carol Whitworth’s parents, Jim and Vera Dingman, founded Sunshine Acres in 1954. The children’s home has helped more than 1,690 youngsters since it began, and now, “Aunt Carol,” as she is fondly called, thanks Blandford Homes for donating a new girls’ home, “Bonnie’s Place,” to the growing Sunshine Acres family. “It’s like one of (Blandford’s) beautiful model homes,” Whitworth said of the 6,700-square-foot home. “It’s just amazing and the house parents said it’s so easy to keep up. (Blandford Homes) made it very practical.” There are 10 girls living in Bonnie’s Place, which was dedicated in April, with house parents Fred and Tawny Apuan and their four children, two dogs and seven snakes. The sprawling home is state-of-theart, with homey touches and modern decorative bedrooms with themes of flowers, Paris, music and hearts just for the girls. Bonnie Blandford is a longtime supporter of Sunshine Acres. She brought son, Jeff Blandford, for a tour. “I noticed when we went through the homes, he looked at it much closer than other people did,” Whitworth said. After several questions, Whitworth said Jeff asked what her next need was. Whitworth told him she was turning girls away because there was no room. At that point, Whitworth said, Jeff offered to build the home. “Bonnie was just grinning from ear

to ear,” Whitworth said. “I said ‘Can we name it Bonnie’s Place?’ and she was thrilled with that. She came out even when we were decorating it. We call Sunshine Acres “a miracle in the desert.” We don’t ask, we just pray about it. I just want people to know how much we love the community, because this is a community project. People like Mr. Blandford deciding to come and help us. I think he’s going to do more...he said he wants to do more.” Sunshine Acres takes in children from around the state who are homeless, whose parents are incarcerated, have had challenges with adoption and chronic or terminal illnesses. Programs for the children include counseling, 4-H and equine therapy, choir, chapel, sports, music, arts and crafts. All the funding for Sunshine Acres is by private donations, estates and corporate gifts. Sunshine Acres runs a boutique and donation center and accepts donations year round. Some of the children in the houses are siblings. Kids at Sunshine Acres range in age from 5 to 18. Girls are in separate houses from boys, however, all the children eat together in the central dining room and attend church services on Sunday. The children at Sunshine Acres can stay through college or until they can make it on their own. “We tell them we’re all family, we just have a bigger family than most,” Whitworth said. High School Football Begins This Month comm. spotlight

As the temperature begins to cool down, that only means one thing— football seasons—high school and the pros—are about to begin. Here we prep readers for the upcoming seasons for Campo Verde and Gilbert high schools. classifieds

biz box

The Campo Verde Coyotes are coming off a school-best 9-3 season and are looking to improve even further for the 2014-2015 season. The Coyotes’ strong 2013-2014 campaign came to an end in the Division II quarterfinals with a loss to rival Mesquite High School by a score of 26-20, to whom they had lost 30-0 earlier in the season. Head coach Max Ragsdale has helmed the team since day one, giving him the opportunity to mold the program. Ragsdale was honored with the U.S. Marines Corps and Glazier Football Clinics Semper Fi Coach Award after last season’s efforts. This year the team will face some hurdles, but has potential to again be a top contender in District 6 of Division II. The Coyotes will be in search of a new quarterback, after losing threeyear starter Luke Pineda. They will also need to replace two cornerbacks who graduated and received NCAA D-II scholarships. “There’s no clear-cut QB as of now,” August 2014

Ragsdale said. “We have 15 practices during our camp in Prescott and another 19 practices before our first game. Lots of time to figure out who’s the guy.” The Coyotes will also have to potentially overcome an early injury to University of Arizona commit Finton Connolly. Connolly tore his ACL during wrestling season, but has had no complications after surgery. Connolly was ranked as the No. 18 best prospect in the class of 2015 by The Arizona Republic reporter Richard Obert. Ragsdale also said outside linebackers Colton Johns and D.J. Kauer, along with running back Zach Wheeler, will be other offensive players to watch. On the defensive side of the ball, middle linebacker Marcus Vaivao, team captain and strong safety Erik Hildebrandt and outside linebacker Kollin Kirchhardt could all have breakout seasons. The Coyotes will begin play on Aug. 22 against Barry Goldwater High School at home. Their schedule also features games against Division II champion Salpointe Catholic on Sept. 19 and rival Mesquite on Oct. 31.

Gilbert High Tigers Head Coach: Tim Rutt 2013 Record: 2-8 Gilbert High School 1101 E. Elliot Rd., Gilbert, 85234 www.gilberttigersfootball.com The Gilbert High School Tigers are looking to rebound from a rough 2013 season and a three-year playoff drought as they enter 2014.

Bouncing back from a 2-8 season will be no easy task, but the Tigers have many of their key players returning, including Arizona State University commit Steve Miller. Miller is a 6-foot5, 295-pound offensive lineman who was ranked by the Arizona Republic’s Richard Obert as the 11th best player in Arizona’s 2015 graduating class. Other key players returning this year include junior quarterback Dane Stankiewicz, senior running back Dylon Gillette and junior wide recievers Jamian Maes and Fontae Canada. Stankiewicz shared time at quarterback last season, but with Tyler Stevenson graduated, it is his position to lose. Stankiewicz threw for 538 yards in 103 passing attempts last season, completing passes at a rate of 41 percent and averaging 12.8 yards per completion. However, Stankewicz will need to improve his accuracy if the Tigers want to keep the ball on offense after throwing

seven interceptions and only two touchdowns in 2013. Gillette, Canada and Maes will attempt to improve on their 2013 seasons and provide as important weapons for Stankewicz to look for on offense. Gillette led the Tigers in rushing last season, compiling 652 yard on 124 carries. Canada and Maes were two of three receivers able to break 100 yards receiving last season. Tigers head coach Tim Rutt is in his second year with the program and now has had some time to implement his coaching style and hopes for better results in 2014. With a crop of returning talent, things seem bright for the Tigers. Gilbert begins its 2014 campaign against Division II semi-finalist Mesquite High School on Aug. 28 away. The Tigers will also have to face Division I semi-finalist Desert Ridge (Sept. 9) and runner-ups Hamilton (Oct. 17) on the road to redemption this season.

Celebrate Mardi Gras Magic on Salt River Purple, green and gold are the prevailing colors of the day as flamboyantly costumed paraders and Mardi Gras “floats” shuttle tubers to the Lower Salt River for a Cajun floating picnic in Tonto National Forest. Paint your face, don a mask and throw on your Mardi Gras beads for the Mardi Gras Magic event from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. The festivities—which features Zydeco music, line dancing and Parade of Floats (buses)—attract thousands to northeast Mesa. The Salt River Tubing Krewe will be tossing doubloons and free Mardi Gras beads will be given to the first 1,000 participants. Costumes are optional for tubers; however, free tubing passes and limited edition Mardi Gras Magic T-shirts will be awarded for Best

Tuber Costumes and event contests. Tubing passes are valid on return visit. “Mardi Gras Magic on the Salt River is an amazing venue for fun in the sun,” said Henri Breault, president/CEO of Salt River Tubing. “Our Mardi Gras Krewe is ready to ‘rock your socks’ with their fun-filled antics, colorful costumes and parade floats. “The ‘More Kids in the Woods’ event has been attended by thousands of folks searching for a different experience in the great outdoors in the summer. Our event is spicy and sizzling, and the Lower Salt River offers ‘chills and thrills’ while you enjoy a Cajun floating picnic on its 68-degree mountain stream waters.” The cost of tube rental is $17 per

Student Entrepreneur Institute Seeks Applicants By Alison Stanton Local high school sophomores and juniors who dream of owning their own small business one day can apply to be part of a new program sponsored by the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. Called Student Entrepreneur Institute (SEI), the nine-month program hopes to inspire participants to business ventures. Interested 10thand 11th-grade students who attend Gilbert Public Schools must apply by Aug. 18. Students may receive three course credit hours at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Adrianne Lynch, economic development director for the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce and staff liaison for SEI, said that 15 students will be selected to be part of the new program, which will cost $150 to attend. She said the Gilbert chamber was inspired to develop SEI due in part to its work with Partners in Progress, which addresses workforce readiness. “We wanted to reach into the school districts, and we want to target students Page 8

with entrepreneurial sprits,” Lynch said. The “ultimate goal” is for participants to decide to attend school and open their small business in Gilbert. Students who take part in the SEI program will have the opportunity to complete a full business plan. Each month, Lynch said, they will work on a new section of their plan, learning about topics like marketing and hiring employees. “At the end of the nine months, everyone will present their plan to business owners, and the top business plan will be selected,” Lynch said. The group of students will have a “meet up” once a month, and also do homework and lessons online. In addition, Lynch said, the students will go on road trips to local businesses and will have the opportunity to participate in job shadowing with Gilbert employers. “We hope to match students with the industries they want to work in,” she said.

For more information about Salt River Tubing, call (480) 984-3305 or visit www.saltrivertubing.com. The Gilbert chamber is still looking for businesses to sponsor SEI students. Lynch said it’s amazing how many teenagers already have clever ideas for small businesses. In the applications that have come in so far, she said many students have said the TV show “Shark Tank” has inspired them to be an entrepreneur. “It will be exciting to see how many applications we get and to get the SEI program going. It will be such a great opportunity for high school students to hear from business owners and learn from professionals,” Lynch said. Regardless of whether or not the students go on to open their own small businesses, Jill Schiefelbein, owner of Impromptu Guru in Gilbert, said entrepreneurial skills are key in today’s workplace—yet they are rarely taught in schools. “I’m excited to be involved with SEI because the skills we are teaching will benefit the students and their communities far beyond the classroom walls,” Schiefelbein said. Pistol Whipped Pastry Whips up Rustically Inspired Treats

By Lynette Carrington With a name like Pistol Whipped Pastry and a slogan of “For a Fistful of Dollars You Can Have a Fistful of Pastries,” customers can expect delicious treats. Gilbert resident Rachel Miller is behind the venture for which she bakes and creates rustically inspired goods made from high-quality ingredients. “I’ve been working as a pastry chef in the Valley about six years now and I started to get requests for cakes,” Miller said. She was married a few years ago and was considering having kids, but also wanted to stay on the local baking scene. Pistol Whipped Pastry was the answer and its first-year business anniversary was in March. “I love country music,” Miller said. “My dad is huge into westerns and my siblings and I have probably seen every single western known to man because I father always used to have them on. We live in the west, so Pistol Whipped

Miller works out of a commercial kitchen and her baked goods are available online. Starting in September, Pistol Whipped Pastry will sell goods at the Gilbert Farmers Market from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays in downtown Gilbert, west of the water tower. “I love the Gilbert Farmers Market,” Miller said. “There are some many amazing

Mark-Taylor opened its first luxury community in Gilbert last month. The 296-unit San Privada, located in the acclaimed Spectrum neighborhood at Val Vista Drive and Pecos Road, offers an ideal living experience for established professionals as well as those looking to get a taste of the Gilbert lifestyle. “Gilbert is home to a large number of young, educated employees with aspirations to move up the corporate ladder,” said Mark-Taylor Vice President Chris Brozina. “San Privada will provide these types of residents a high-quality place to reside at a time where they might be more focused on their ascending career, and not necessarily ready for the commitment that comes with home ownership. Ultimately, the hope is that those future business leaders remain immersed in the Gilbert lifestyle and choose to make the town their permanent home and raise families there.” San Privada’s location provides residents with the “walkability” that allows pedestrians to utilize the town’s sidewalks and landscaped paths to access shopping, restaurants and employment. It is within blocks of the SanTan Village and area retail, including Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Harkins Theater and Dick’s Sporting Goods. San Privada’s features include those

Those elements never go out of style and the residents appreciate the attention to lifestyle.” Residents will also have access to a spinning studio, a cyber café with Mac and PC options, a social lounge, an outdoor cabana that includes a poolside kitchen, and a lagoon-style pool. Rents range from $960 to $1800, with one, two and three-bedroom units now available to lease. For more information about San Privada, visit www.mark-taylor.com or call (480) 991-9111.

Back-to-School Immunizations and Physicals Important

By Tracy House Schools have been working all summer to welcome the kiddos back through the classroom doors and to ensure pupils are walking through those doors healthy, it might be a good time to schedule that back-to-school physical and verify the kids are up to date on their immunizations. Dr. Jessica Regnaert, a family practice physician with Banner Health Group, offered some timely suggestions for keeping the kids healthy. Beginning with students just starting out in kindergarten, Regnaert said, “It’s very important, especially prior to starting kindergarten, to make sure that they’re up-to-date on their immunizations and safe when they go back to school.” Regnaert recommended parents

schedule physicals early in the summer or even have annual physicals around a child’s birthday to keep him or her on a yearly schedule and to avoid the summer rush on sports physicals. The crucial ages to be sure children are up-to-date on immunizations are around 4 and 5 years old or kindergarten age; 10 and 11 years old; and students who have graduated high school and are off to college. “College, especially living in dorms, can be places where a lot of germs are spread.” Schools require students to have updated immunizations. “Looking at it from the school’s perspective, they’re just trying to protect all their kids and make sure that something doesn’t spread through the school.”

For uniform shopping, think outside the uniform shop. Old Navy, www.amazon.com, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Target and others offer uniform options that are almost always cheaper than the uniform shop. Just make sure that the items fit the criteria of the school before purchasing.

Clothes Shop secondhand as much as possible. Check thrift shops, consignment stores and even yard sales for clothes. Shopping online can also save you when you use coupon codes (www.savings.com is a good resource) and cashback sites like www.ebates.com. Look for a sale and free shipping before making a purchase. there’s so many changes in their body, I think it’s really good to hear, coming from their doctor, ‘This is what’s going to be happening.’” Hearing what to expect about body changes from the doctor, as well as from the parent, can put a child at ease and open a dialogue for a conversation. “We talk to them about everything from grades, how are they doing in school, to what are their future career plans, and are they dating, are they being safe. So much general health stuff.” Regnaert said she hopes parents see the doctors as a back up and an advocate for them. High school students can also benefit from an annual physical. “That’s an age where we like them to come in and realize that a relationship with their doctor is something they’re going to have over their whole lifetime—it’s good to start building that relationship so that way they can get to know us, trust us and share any concerns they have healthwise.” This includes talking about healthy behaviors, drug and alcohol use, diet,

exercise and especially driving safety. Regnaert mentioned the No. 1 killer of high school students is car accidents. Opening the lines of communication between the physician, parent and child is a healthy habit that develops through annual care that includes upto-date immunizations. “We’re here as support for the parents and making sure their kids are healthy.” Banner Medical Group primary care providers like pediatricians, internists, family medicine physicians and obstetrician/gynecologists staff Banner Health Clinics and Banner Health Centers. You probably wouldn’t recognize my kitchen table on Sunday mornings. It’s pretty fun to look at, though. Old recipe boxes are stacked on top of each other. Mounds of heritage recipes that I’ve researched, collected and categorized fill the tabletop from corner to corner. Then the organizing begins. The pile that’s always the highest is the “gotta make it now” category. Because of your family stories and kitchen memories attached to these recipes, Sunday mornings for me have become rich and rewarding “play dates” that I relish. This week I reached through my paper trove to open the diary that I kept while on the road rescuing recipes a few years ago. Out fell a sheet of paper and along with it the memory of Tucsonan Selina Ramos, who had emailed me about her family’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad recipe. Her note mentioned that it’s

perfect as a picnic salad or a tomatoless salsa for chip dipping. I stuck it on the “gotta make it now” pile and made it later in the day. This salad is really delicious because it has that fantastic Southwestern flavor of grilled corn off the cob. The variety of hot chillies and bell peppers add a lot of flavor, and the hint of cumin brings it all together. I had never thought of grilling jicama before, but it was wonderful in this combination. Selina’s got the right idea with this dish being a great picnic or backyard barbecue salad because it transports and holds up well in the heat. In fact, it can be eaten warm right from the skillet or chilled.

Selina’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 large fresh ears of corn 1 poblano or hatch chili, chopped fine 1 large jalapeño pepper, chopped fine 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 cup chopped jicama 1 bunch green onions, sliced thin (about 7 onions) 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped fine Juice of 1/2 lemon (or juice of 1 large lime) 1 teaspoon garlic salt or sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Slice corn from the husks and cook in olive oil until kernels become browned. (Caution, kernels can pop slightly.) Note: You can also grill corn on the husk until blackened, then slice off the kernels and add to skillet. Proceed to next step. Turn heat to high and to the corn add chillies, bell peppers, jicama, green onions and cumin, stirring constantly. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour mixture into serving bowl. Toss in cilantro, lemon or lime juice, garlic salt or sea salt and pepper. Serve warm or chilled. August 2014

In the summertime, we remember the childhood chant, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.” We all love this frozen treat, so this month we are featuring Frost: A Gelato Shoppe and Udder Delights—two award-winning ice cream parlors in Gilbert. On a day when the temperature topped 110, I asked my three granddaughters to help me with my “job.” We first visited Frost: A Gelato Shoppe in SanTan Village. This is definitely the ice cream shop of the future with its glass entry wall, huge mirrors and stainless steel tables and chairs. The bright blue and white interior is very cool and welcoming while the large glass display cases filled with beautifully garnished gelato tantalize the taste buds. There are differences between ice cream and gelato which are listed on cards on the counter but basically, gelato has less fat, comm. spotlight

less air and less calories than ice cream. The menu is on two big blue light screens and the prices are listed in Italian: Piccolo $3.70, Medio $4.62 and Grande $5.45. Milkshakes, sorbet, root beer floats, gelatte (milkshake with espresso,) as well as pints and quarts are also offered. The most interesting item is the Spizzico ($19.99) which is a tree of 23 tiny cones filled with 23 flavors of gelato. The friendly servers encourage tasting so we sampled some flavors before we made our selections. It was difficult for the three girls ages 9, 5 and 4 but they finally selected mint chocolate chip, strawberry and coconut, and I chose the dark chocolate and salted caramel. As we shared with each other, we concluded that each one was absolutely delicious and we happily ate every single bite. Frost: A Gelato Shoppe has meet your neighbor

it all: great service, fantastic servers, beautiful interior, nice patio area and of course the fabulous gelato. Best of all, we can get it right here in Gilbert and dream we are eating it in Italy. The next day I took my three very willing accomplices to Udder Delights where pure down-home country reigns. Superstition Farm supplies all the milk for the ice cream, butter, milk, cakes and other “delights.” If you haven’t toured Superstition Farm, add that to your list of activities because it is a local dairy that reminds us where milk actually comes from. Udder Delights also offers tours and classes on making ice cream and other things completely from “scratch.” The sizes here are Weefolk $3, Single Scoop $3.75 and Double Scoop $4.75 with up to 30 flavors of ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt. Sundaes, floats,

shakes and Italian sodas are also on the menu. Stephanie Lopez, the manager, told the girls they could sample as many flavors as they wanted and she told them some of the unusual flavors that they have made are: avocado, chips and salsa, The Grinch and hot dog. Kyra chose peanut butter. Lexy chose bubble gum and Hailey chose animal cookies and I tried Superstition Farm and white chocolate raspberry. Wow! These flavors were outstanding. The Superstition Farm was a delicious combination of cocoa, Nutella and hazelnuts while the white chocolate, raspberry coulis and white chocolate chips were blended into frozen perfection. When your family is “screaming for ice cream,” make everyone happy and race right over to Frost: A Gelato Shoppe or Udder Delights for summertime’s best dessert.

Divorcing Parents—Avoid Alcohol Abuse, Illegal Drugs or Excessive Prescription Drug Use If you as a parent have filed for divorce or are seeking sole or equal decision making of your minor children, the court Paul S. Rowley must decide what is in the child’s best interests, if you and your spouse cannot agree. If your spouse alleges you abuse alcohol or drugs, most likely the court will require you to be drug tested. Usually, this is a urine test but could also include a hair follicle test. Hair follicle testing can detect drug usage as far back as 90 days, whereas a urine test only detects drugs in the past week or so. If you are ordered to do a hair follicle test and you shave your head or body hair it will be impossible to test and it will look like you have something to hide! At least 1 1/2 inches in length is required for testing purposes. If you have used drugs in the past few days you could test positive in the urine test and negative in the hair follicle test. Recently we have been seeing parents who abuse opiates and prescription pain medication, like vicodin or percocet. Methamphetamine is also commonly detected. Even if you take a diet weight loss medication, it could show positive for amphetamine. Alcohol and marijuana are also detectable in a urine test. So if you are a parent, whether divorcing or not, if you use alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines,

barbiturates, opiates, benzodiazepines, phencyclidine, propoxyphene or cocaine and your fitness to have custody of your children is questioned, the use of any of these drugs can trigger a loss of legal or physical custody. Also, if you test positive the court may require you to test randomly for several months until you are free and clean of drugs in your system. My advice: • Avoid all drug use unless it is prescribed by a physician and you take it as prescribed. • Never drink and drive. • Never abuse drugs and drive. Several states have legalized marijuana use, but if you are trying to keep custody of your children, being under the influence of legal marijuana is not a great defense when it comes to the “best interests” of your child. Self Development Academy Challenges Students biz spotlight

Self Development Charter School recently changed its name to Self Development Academy. The new name and logo are in sync with the positive direction of the school that serves kindergarten through eighth graders, as well as the adjacent preschool. “We’re very excited about it. We felt that the name more accurately reflects our educational approach and the high standards that we have for the students and their educational experience,” said teacher and administrative team member, Jennifer Salvatori. The curriculum for the school is exceptional and demand for enrollment at the school continues to grow. “Once the school year starts, it seems like enrollment for the next year starts,” on the town

Salvatori stated. “Our school provides an educational experience where we want to make sure every child has a strong educational foundation—the basics. We teach one full grade level ahead of the Arizona state standards and that starts in kindergarten.” Salvatori said the school focuses on challenging its students and teaching critical thinking skills. “It’s important to lay the foundation and make sure students master the concepts—that they’re not just taught the concept and then move on,” she said. “It’s making sure they master them and then teaching to that higher level.” The school offers a foreign language blended learning program through Middlebury College that combines speaking, writing, grammar and culture. It is available to students as

Kathy Butts of Century 21 Specializes in Gilbert Personalized attention from a real estate agent is important when considering buying or selling a home. Century 21 Arizona Foothills agent Kathy Butts specializes in Gilbert real estate, but will also work Valleywide for home buyers and sellers. “I service Queen Creek, Chandler, Scottsdale, Mesa and mostly the east side of the Valley,” Butts explained. “The main reason I went with Century 21 is because I think it’s important to use a name-brand real estate company. The brand is very recognizable not only in Arizona, but worldwide. I get a lot of relocation clients that are coming from all over the United States and they specifically choose Century 21.” She said she enjoys getting referrals. “Most of my client base started with on the town
