Nearly 300 high school girls from across Arizona traveled to University of Arizona for the 67nd session of the American Legion Auxiliary’s Arizona Girls State. Girls State was organized as a national Americanism activity by the 1937 American Legion Auxiliary National Convention. A national committee to direct the program was created by the 1946 American Legion Auxiliary National Convention. Girls State is a practical application of Americanism and good citizenship. This year’s Gilbert and Chandler attendees included: Mesquite High School students Addie Fairley, Cynthia Tran and Caitlin Magee; Campo Verde High School student Jill Jones; Seaton Catholic Preparatory student Gabriella Mazza; Gilbert Classical Academy student Megan Bowers; Higley High School students Natalie Stoltoman, Azucena Rodriguez and Sydney Barry; Gilbert High School student Rachel Bond and Chandler High School student Sarah Baker. This unique opportunity is open to girls completing their junior year of high school and who meet the necessary qualifications. Arizona American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a weeklong program designed to educate young women in the functions of their government and kindle the desire to actively participate in and responsibly fulfill their roles as citizens. This year the session ran from June 1 through June 7. “This is a week that shapes a lifetime,” Girls State Director Penny Maklary said. The girls who participated in the session were housed in the renovated Likins Hall and used other instructional classrooms throughout the university. classifieds

“Similar to past years, we have senior staff that work as city and county advisers, while junior counselors return from the previous year’s Girl State to assist senior staff in the education (and fun) process,” she said. Arizona Girls State is comprised of 12 cities and four countries. There were 24 to 28 girls in each city and approximately 75 girls in each county. The girls were divided into two pseudo political parties, federalists and nationalists. Precinct committeemen watched over all the elections and assisted the political parties. Each city also elected a mayor and a counsel and wrote their own ordinances and resolutions, while passing a budget and planning for planning and zoning. Each city was also assigned to a country, where participants continued campaigning to elect individuals to the county and state positions. Throughout the week, participants conducted regular city and party meetings, wrote and debated bills, received instruction from actual elected state and county officials. Throughout the week, participants elected two delegates as senators to attend the prestigious Girls Nation held the following month in Washington, D.C. Girls Nation is an all-expense-paid week with other Girls Staters from across the nation who will debate federal issues they present as bills. They also visit the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, the White House and other memorials in or near the nation’s capital. The Girls State program is sponsored by the units of the American Legion Auxiliary. Each unit sponsors girls from assigned high schools in their area. For more information, contact (602) 241-1080. A study by Estately says Arizona Googles the term “conjugal visits” more than any other state. And that wasn’t even the worst of them. We’re looking at you, Illinois. According to a U.S. Census Bureau looking back report, Gilbert and Goodyear are among the fastest-growing municipalities in the country, placing 12th and sixth respectively. Of course, that’s hardly news to the residents of those areas. Have you seen the construction around there? Congratulations to Gilbert’s Emily Kocher. The 18-year-old Desert Ridge High School student was able to graduate on time, despite the inhibiting cancer treatments she has been undergoing for sarcoma. Kocher entered remission on March 5. Gilbert will be getting a new university! St. Xavier University will make a home
in downtown Gilbert on Vaughn Avenue and Ash Street in the Heritage District. The university will open doors in August 2015. Cody Vasquez, who is all of 12 years old, will join 54 children from ages 8 to 12 in Washington, D.C., on July 18 for the third annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, hosted by first lady Michelle Obama, Epicurious and the education and agriculture department. Cody’s family owns three Mexican restaurant concepts around Arizona: Someburros, Isabel’s Amor and Poncho’s. Cody, who will be the sixth-grade student council president at Quartz Hill Elementary in the fall, won his spot with his shrimp tacos with watermelon jicama salad recipes. Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. may have had humble beginnings, but its reach is worldwide. The brewpub was named Best New Brewery in the World

Even those who aren’t golfers will find the joint happening. Topgolf is under construction near SanTan Village. Speaking of SanTan Village, the area around it is bursting with new restaurants. By Tracy House For Sheryl Robinson, being involved in The Mom-e Club has been a rewarding experience. The Gilbert mother and entrepreneur was recently named the 2014 Mom Entrepreneur of the Year as a member of The Mom-e Club. Robinson’s been in real estate for 11 years and the owner/broker of Home Key Realty for the last five years. She’s the mother of two sons, ages 21 and 15. Robinson became involved with The Mom-e Club a little more than six months ago when she met another club member. She explained that what drew her to The Mom-e Club was that the members understand, support and encourage each other. “I went and was immediately drawn to it and joined that day.” On The Mom-e Club’s website, www.mom-eclub.com, it boasts that “it is the place for you to gain real life, entrepreneurial experiences from mom and women entrepreneurs everywhere who get it!”

Robinson said she has been inspired many times along the way to becoming Mom Entrepreneur of the Year. “Everything’s always a journey and while you’re on that journey, things change, things reveal themselves. I can’t say it’s just down to one—it’s a multitude of things. My goal is always to do better today than what I did yesterday,” Robinson explained. One thing Robinson said was part of her inspiration was to have a strong work ethic as an example to her children. “I’ve always told my children growing up it’s my job to raise you to be a person that can live a life independent of me. That’s my job, that’s what I need to do for you.” Robinson was one of 10 finalists for Mom Entrepreneur of the Year. She said she felt very encouraged throughout the process which included submitting two videos and nationwide voting on The Mom-e Club’s website. She received the most

By Lynette Carrington Gilbert resident Chad Nuckles, who owns Nuckles Meat Co., pays homage to his family with his old-style beef jerky production methods. Nuckles Meat Co. may have been incorporated in May 2013, but the tradition started with Nuckles’ grandfather. “He didn’t do any of the smokehouse or finish and preparation,” Nuckles said. “He learned the butcher trade when he was in the Navy and he would cut meat on a submarine for the servicemen in 1941. He officially opened his shop in ’59, was a butcher for years and my uncle and father continued the business of Nuckles Meat Shop. I wanted to do the fun side of the business and get the finished product to the consumer.” Nuckles’ jerky utilizes different meats including beef, bison, elk, venison and turkey. “Our elk, venison and bison come out of Colorado and everything else is from Arizona,” he said. “We try to get
as much as we can locally. We’re really picky about where we get our meat. I investigated five different facilities before selecting one where we wanted to source our meat.” The “smokehouse” that Nuckles previously mentioned is a 200-squarefoot mobile production facility. It is constructed like a traditional log cabin on a dual axle trailer and has 85 racks for smoking jerky that rotates hourly during the smoking process. Unlike most jerky manufacturers who dehydrate jerky meat and then add liquid smoke for flavor, Nuckles creates jerky with old-school methods. “Smoking with wood seasons the inside of the meat,” he said. “The more you use it, the better the meat, and the smoke adds flavor.” Smoking takes about 10 hours and flavor is helped along with the assistance of Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel wood chips from Tennessee. Unlike dehydrating methods, smoking jerky with wood from start to finish leaves the meat tender and pliable.

Nuckles Meat Co.’s jerky also contains no sodium nitrate or MSG and is gluten-free. By Meghan McCoy The Phoenix Children’s Hospital is scheduled to open its first inpatient unit outside of the downtown campus within Mercy Gilbert Medical Center on Oct. 1. “We took hold of the unit on June 1 and just started construction and repurposing,” said Dr. Ryan Bode, comedical director, patient safety and quality chief for the hospitalist division of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “It will feel and look very similar to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and brands so to speak.” In 2011, Dignity Health entered into a strategic alliance, which transfers its pediatric services to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital main campus. “What is unique about what we are doing out here is that the partnership that exists really brings the best of resources that both organizations can offer to the community,” said Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers’ President and CEO Tim Bricker. “We are excited to bring that world class of resources and a new set of services and expertise for children and families here.” He said the detailed planning and consideration to repurpose the unit developed over the past year. Bricker explained the pediatric unit is replacing the short-stay adult nursing unit, which is being moved to the fourth floor. The new 16-bed adult
observation unit will cost $1.5 million to construct. “The goal is to bring care closer to the East Valley to enable families and patients to stay closer to home when it is safe to do so,” Bode said. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center’s pediatric unit closed down three years ago, according to Bricker. It was then turned into an adult nursing unit. “It’s important because there is a significant community need for pediatric services,” Bricker said due young growth and the high birth rate. “Phoenix Children’s Hospital is a wonderful hospital, but rather far away.” The Phoenix Children’s Hospital is developing a 22-bed inpatient pediatric nursing unit that will be managed and operated by its staff. The unit will also have an in-house pharmacy and pharmacist. The unit will be used for general common pediatric conditions. Complex conditions requiring advanced care will have direct access to Phoenix Children’s Hospital main campus. “The unit will be staffed around the clock by nurses and physicians from the Phoenix Children Hospital and other staff members. It will provide really quite an array of inpatient medical services for children,” Bricker said of the Dignity Health’s Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.

Supervision, Precautions Key to July 4 Fireworks Safety
By Tracy House They sparkle, pop, crack and whistle. They create the collective oohs and ahs from the crowd as they light up the sky. Fireworks are time-honored traditions for July 4, and even the biggest kid enjoys setting them off. But, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Deputy Chief of Community Services for Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department, Mike Connor, recommended the safest thing to do to enjoy fireworks this July 4 is to attend a public show. He said that Gilbert partners with Central Christian Church for a community fireworks celebration. Central Christian Church is located at the southeast corner of Lindsay and Germann roads. “The No. 1 safest thing to do is go to a public show,” Connor said. “We
do know that the booths are up and people are selling fireworks. Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of July 4th but it basically brings about 200 people on average to the emergency room in the month with fireworks related injuries, nationally.” Connor stressed fireworks are not for kids. “A lot of people think of fireworks and kids, but we tell people never allow young children to play with or light or ignite those fireworks. They are very, very dangerous.” He said sparklers specifically as one of the most dangerous novelties children use. Water boils at 212 degrees. Wood burns at 575 degrees. Tips on Saving on Summer Cooling pasta vixen
mom cents
Summer can be a drain on your energy bills, especially here in Arizona, however there are some things that you can do to offset the seasonal impact on your pocketbook. These DIY projects will help you save on summer cooling costs to keep your home’s temperature down during the hot season. • Add Some Green Around Your Home. Provide natural shade to your home by planting trees and bushes. You especially want shade that falls directly on windows and doors to block the harsh summer sun. This will help to diffuse the heat and keep your home a bit cooler. • Create Artificial Shade. Consider installing awnings above windows that face the sun. Awnings that can be rolled up or down offer the choice of letting in the sun versus keeping the windows in the shade. You can also install rigid awnings photo page

that hang above your windows on a bracket, making it easy to take them down when not needed. • Thermostat Control. Run your thermostat a little warmer through the summer. According to FamilyHandyman.com, you can save from 5 percent to 10 percent on cooling costs for each degree higher than 78 degrees that you keep your thermostat. • Summer Window Treatments. Covering the windows with dark, opaque curtains keeps the light out as well as the heat. Shades come in a variety of designs, so you can still have an attractive window treatment while saving on your energy costs.
• Install Ceiling Fans. Ceiling fans help air circulate through the house. In the summer, ceiling fans should draw the air up. This brings the cool air up from the floor to mix with the room air, keeping the entire room comfortable. • Change Light Bulbs. The standard incandescent light bulb generates a lot of heat. Newer compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, are cooler and don’t use as much energy. Although more expensive than incandescent, the CFLs will save you in the long run by reducing your energy and cooling needs. I’ve found some great deals on CFLs at Costco recently, too.

become part of the enforcement issue in Arizona: de-regulated novelties such as sparklers, smoke devices and novelties legal for sale and use; permitted “nonaerial” consumer fireworks; and prohibited “aerial” consumer fireworks. Sparklers, caps, poppers and snakes are novelty items and can be purchased and used throughout the year. Consumer fireworks, such as ground based sparklers that emit showers of sparks are what are available at the tents and stores. In the Town of Gilbert the restricted fireworks for use, or permissible consumer fireworks, are allowed only on Thursday, July 3, through Saturday, July 5. Finally, the prohibited “aerial” consumer fireworks are the types used in the permitted public fireworks displays only. These include skyrockets and firecrackers that are not allowed by law to consumers. Connor stressed that use is limited to private property with the owner’s permission. Fireworks use is
prohibited on all public property— such as schools, streets and parking lots. “Fireworks are dangerous. If you are going to use them, use the permissible ones. Follow the law. Use them in the right place. Use them at the right time. Always have an adult use them. The No. 1 message is if you want to be safe and avoid injuries, stay away from the consumer fireworks and take your family to one of the public fireworks shows.” For more information on fireworks safety visit the Town of Gilbert fire department website at www.gilbertaz. gov in the fire department section, under fire prevention safety. “Ignorance is not an excuse,” Connor said. “The information is out there. We’ve got a fantastic website. All the information is available. If you are going to use them, educate yourself on the dangers. Educate yourself on what’s legal, what’s illegal and basically just know the safest thing you can do is go to a public show.” Tracy House is a freelance writer and editor. It’s July and we’re looking for ways to stay cool, eat lighter and maybe give the slow cooked oven recipes a rest. The heck if I’m going to give up my sweets, though. So what better way to kick off July than with two scrumptious desserts that require very little effort? Watermelon cake is all the rage online these days. I have to admit that I was not a believer
that you could actually frost a real watermelon and decorate it like an actual cake. But you can, if you follow my instructions, and I think you’re going to love it! The second recipe for strawberry pie is an all-American favorite and this recipe really brings out the true flavor of fresh strawberries. I hope you enjoy both! Stay cool and I’ll see you next month.
Watermelon Cake with Whipped Cream Frosting 1 watermelon Fruit for garnish: (1 pint blueberries, 1 pint strawberries, 6-7 Kiwi, 2 cups grapes, 1 large orange) 2 pints whipping cream (or more for large watermelon) 1 small (3 oz) package Jell-O Instant Vanilla Pudding 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar
Cut rind off entire watermelon. Make a slice through the bottom to make a base so it will remain steady on a plate. Cut watermelon the size and shape you want your cake. (A flat top cake is easier to garnish with fruit.) Pack paper towels around the entire watermelon to soak up watermelon
juice. (The dryer the watermelon, the easier it will be to frost.) For the Stabilized Whipped Cream Frosting: For each cup of whipped cream used, add 1 tablespoon of instant vanilla pudding and 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar. For sweeter frosting, add more powdered sugar. Whip together until stiff peaks form. Frost cake with spatula or place frosting in piping bag with large star tip. (I use a 14- or 16-inch piping bag.) Garnish with fresh fruit and slice in wedges. Serve immediately.

remaining 2 cups strawberries and combine with cup of sugar in a medium saucepan. Add lemon juice. Cook over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together cornstarch and water. Gradually stir cornstarch mixture into boiling strawberry mixture. Reduce heat and simmer mixture until thickened, about 5-6 minutes, stirring often. Pour mixture over berries in pastry shell. Chill for several hours before serving. By Lynette Carrington Gilbert resident Larry “Tank” Jones is an actor who has lined up some impressive roles in 2014. Known for his career in hip hop as well as roles in “Three Kings,” “CSI: Miami” and “Breaking Bad,” Jones has elevated his commitment to acting, which he has pursued since he was a child. “I did a ‘Sesame Street’ commercial when I was 2,” Jones said. “I had a career that was going and I had an agency that wanted to represent me as a child.” His fledgling career stalled when his mother fell ill and Jones could not find transportation to and from auditions. In high school, he attended and graduated from Barbizon School of Modeling. He eventually took acting lessons and then found his way into hip hop. Jones moved to Arizona from Illinois after high school so he could attend Arizona State University, from which he earned a marketing degree. “Even though I enjoyed music, that wasn’t what I was going to pursue,” stated the actor. He found some success in hip hop, but soon landed a role in the George Clooney film “Three Kings.” His acting career took flight, but he wanted to give back to the community, too. Jones founded the nonprofit organization Choices Empowerment, which focuses on the messages of anti-bullying and making positive life choices. He speaks at schools and churches around the Valley. “I feel that it’s important for people to have tangible tools to deal with bullying,” he explained.

He loves his speaking engagements, which have brought him to Skyline and Highland high schools. He even partnered with 13th Floor Haunted House for its “Don’t Be a Monster” campaign against bullying. “We also give away scholarships every year,” Jones added. Recently, Jones headed to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he is shooting “Union Bound.” He’ll will portray slave Jim Young in the film that is based on a true story. “Three Union soldiers are captured by the Confederacy and transferred to Andersonville Prison,” Jones explained. “It was notorious. It had tens of thousands of captured soldiers who were treated worse than slaves. My character is a slave and stable hand that assists some escaped soldiers in getting back to the north. It’s the most emotionally complex role that I’ve ever read and had to do.” To prepare for the role, Jones called writer/actor/producer and San Tan Valley resident Ricardo Andres to teach him about horses. From the meeting, he was offered a role in “The Deadliest Gun.” “I had another actor for the role of Ben, but he physically didn’t quite fit the role and he wasn’t a member of Screen Actors Guild,” Andres said. “I met Tank, he was a good fit for the part and was already with the guild, so he got the role.” The film shoots in San Antonio, Texas, this October. I Have Been Appointed as Trustee, What Do I Do Now? If a parent or loved one died leaving you as the trustee of their revocable living trust, you may be asking yourself, “What do I Kenneth C. Barney do now?” First of all, let me tell you, although serving as a trustee can be very rewarding it can also be a thankless job, as you will most likely be very under appreciated by the beneficiaries you are serving. Secondly, I also recommend that you get help and get it quickly, as there are many important things that must be done to properly administer the trust. As a trustee, you are deemed to be a fiduciary, which means you will be held to a higher standard of care than a normal person would be in dealing with his or her own assets and are to follow your loved one’s instructions as to how such assets are to be used and distributed. There are many tasks, duties, responsibilities, complexities and pitfalls that a trustee should know while administering a trust. It would be impossible to list and outline all such items in a short article, therefore, the following are merely bullet points of things to be aware of and is not meant to be an all inclusive list of tasks or concerns: • Hire proper legal representation to help you understand the terms of the trust and inform you of your duties and responsibilities; • Gather and protect assets immediately, do not let items “walk

away” from the home during funeral services or other family events; • Legally take over as trustee, signing an acceptance of trustee document; • Notice beneficiaries of the trust within the statutory time; • Create and sign a new certificate of trust; • Obtain a new tax identification number for the trust, if necessary; • Prepare a full inventory and appraisement of trust assets; • Identify nontrust assets and determine if a probate is necessary; • Work with a CPA to make sure all required tax returns have been filed; • Identify and deal with creditors of the decedent’s estate; • Prepare and submit trust accounting to trust beneficiaries; • Obtain receipt and release documents from beneficiaries acknowledging that they have received what they are entitled to from the trust. Lastly, my best advice to you is to make sure you always properly communicate with the beneficiaries, periodically informing them as to the status of the administration, answer questions, and seek their advice and recommendations when appropriate. Kenneth C. Barney is a partner with Rowley Chapman and Barney, whose practice is limited to family based estate planning, tax planning, probate and trust administration and guardianship matters and can be reached at (480) 833-1113.
