By Alison Stanton For years, Casey Bartle was unable to do activities that many people take for granted; things like physical education classes, dancing, or lifting heavy objects. Now, thanks to the blessing of her physician along with the knowledgeable staff at Orangetheory Fitness at Village Square at Dana Park in Mesa, Bartle is working out regularly and feeling better than ever. Bartle, 27, was born with Marfan syndrome, a condition that affects the connective tissue in the body. In Bartle’s case, it was a milder version that affected mostly her cardiovascular system. When she was 10, Bartle was hospitalized for congestive heart failure, which caused her heart to grow to the size of a football. “I was told then that I couldn’t do P.E. in school anymore, and that I could maybe ride a bike or walk but nothing beyond that, and to be really careful,” Bartle said. During her freshman year in high school, Bartle underwent her first open heart surgery, which repaired a mitral valve leak. A year later, the valve was replaced with a porcine valve. In 2011, Bartle endured her third open heart surgery when physicians grafted her aorta. A year after her last surgery, Bartle received surprising news from her doctor. “He said, ‘OK, you can go out now and exercise,’ and I said, ‘Wait, let’s define what you mean by ‘exercise.’” After years of restricting her activity, Bartle found her doctor’s words to be “incredibly intimidating.” “My entire life, people were telling me, ‘No, you can’t do this,’ or they treated me like I was going to break.”
After being assured that it was truly OK to finally keep the rest of her body as fit as her newly repaired and healthy heart, Bartle looked into different types of exercise. When a friend told her about Orangetheory Fitness, she decided to give it a try. “When I found out about Orangetheory Fitness, I was very selfconscious and had no upper body strength and no endurance,” Bartle said, adding that her first class was in January 2013. “I made it through 15 minutes of the workout and had to stop.” After speaking with a trainer who assured her that they would work with her and adjust the exercises to her physical capabilities, Bartle agreed to give it another shot. Gradually, she gained enough strength and endurance to be able to workout four to five times a week. Dr. Anne-Marie Feyrer-Melk, a concierge cardiologist at Optimal Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center in Scottsdale, said that for people like Bartle who are overcoming physical limitations, it is important for them to optimize whatever they are able to do. “Wheelchair-bound people can still improve their upper body strength,” she said. “The key is to have what I call a lifetime sport that you enjoy doing on a regular basis.” For Bartle, she has found her lifetime sport at Orangetheory Fitness. The gym is now her second home, she said, and the trainers are like family. “They are so supportive there, and my confidence level has gotten a lot better. I have more strength and endurance now and can do so much.”

Chad Nuckles, owner of Nuckles Meat Company of Gilbert, serves up free samples to Gilbert Farmers Market shoppers.
Gilbert Farmers Market Showcases Local Goods By Lynette Carrington Farmers markets have long been known to offer fresh produce, food items and other specialty goods made by those in a community. The Gilbert Farmers Market has been going strong for more than four years and is located in the heart of downtown Gilbert. Gilbert Farmers Market boasts locally grown chemical-free organic produce from many local farmers. Other fresh products include meat, cheese, eggs, bread, coffee and tea, sauces and seasonings and many other goodies. The goods there are quality products and the people selling them are enthusiastic to tell shoppers all about them. Nuckles Meat Company owner Chad Nuckles has participated in the farmers market for more than a year selling quality handcrafted jerky. “We do 13 farmers markets a week and this one is my favorite,” stated Nuckles. “It is well-run and has a great customer base.” Nuckles’ tent is set up with the variety of beef, bison, venison, turkey and elk jerky. Be sure to stop by for complimentary samples. Get more information at www. nucklesmeatcompany.com. Pinetop and Gilbert Olive Oil also tempts shoppers with quality olive oil samples. Forest Service, Salt River Tubing Host Hawaiian Luau By Scott Shumaker If you regret only showing off your unexpected limbo skills at weddings and birthday parties, read on. Salt River Tubing, a river floating rental outfit operating in the Tonto National Forest, is inviting Valley residents to trade their ordinary clothes for grass skirts, coconuts and straw hats and head to the Lower Salt River Recreation Area for a day of family fun at the Hawaiian Mega Hula on Saturday, June 21. During the Hawaiian luau-themed event, Salt River Tubing will hand out free leis as guests enjoy performances by the Hula Honey line dancers and groove to island music on the riverside beach. Visitors can also win the respect of their peers with hula and limbo contests. Salt River Tubing President and CEO Henri Breault said Mega Hula guests will limbo for a good cause: the event is part of the USDA Forest Service’s “More Kids in the Woods” initiative to increase youth involvement in outdoor activities.
“Our Hawaiian Mega Hula event was a huge success last year and our guests raved about their luau adventure on the Salt River,” Breault said. “The event is an attention-grabber for teens and families and encourages them to venture into the great outdoors.” Radio Station 98 KUPD, an event co-sponsor, will broadcast live from the event. River runners should be creative in their outfit selection: Salt River Tubing will award free tube rentals and T-shirts for the best Hawaiian costumes. Salt River Tubing said its buses will also be transformed into Hawaiian “barges” to transport guests upriver to enjoy the Salt River’s mountain-fed rapids. Salt River Tubing is located in Tonto National Forest, just seven minutes from the 202 East Loop on North Power Road. The event will run 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The cost of tube rental is $17 per person or tube, which includes tax and shuttle bus service. Visit www. saltrivertubing.com for event details.
Hospice of the Valley Receives $10,000 Donation Hospice of the Valley has received a $10,000 donation from the Mesa office of Home Instead Senior Care, a global provider of in-home care services for seniors. Mesa’s Home Instead Senior Care office, which serves all of the Southeast Valley, has a longtime relationship with notfor-profit Hospice of the Valley. “So many of our caregivers work with the staff at Hospice of the Valley or use the agency personally to care for loved ones. They tell us how much the nurses and CNAs have helped them at end of life,’’ said Home Instead Senior Care owner Mahnaz Pourian. “The first organization that came to my mind for a donation was Hospice of the Valley.’’ Pourian presented checks to six local organizations May 16 at a “Give Back to the Community” event in Sun Lakes. In addition to the donation to Hospice of the Valley, Pourian routinely makes contributions to the agency in memory of clients.
“We are grateful for the very generous support of Home Instead Senior Care,’’ said Susan Levine, Hospice of the Valley’s executive director. Home Instead Senior Care’s national conference in May featured a videotaped interview with Hospice of the Valley’s Kathy Donald, one of the team leaders who oversees patient care in the East Valley. The video, shown to thousands at the convention, drew resounding applause, Pourian said. Hospice of the Valley has been caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families since 1977. Get Warm Feelings for the Cold-Blooded Summer Camp at PHS Introduces Kids to Reptiles By Kimberly Hosey Phoenix Herpetological Society’s “Reptile Encounters” summer camp might feature some cold-blooded subjects, but the program aims to develop warmth and compassion for the animals as it educates, excites and inspires kids. Campers interact with tortoises, turtles, baby alligators and crocodiles, large and small snakes and more. Students also learn how to identify reptiles (venomous and nonvenomous), how to properly handle certain reptiles and lessons on everything from anatomy and reproduction to ecosystems and endangered species. The organization, which is heavily involved in education and outreach as well as conservation and running a sanctuary for 1,500 local and exotic reptiles, offers one weeklong camp for ages 8 to 9 and four camp sessions each for ages 9 to 11 and 12 to 14. The day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Organizers worked to develop a rigorous (but fun) curriculum that adheres to state science standards, and built a classroom devoted to the camp. Campers become “junior herpetologists” and focus on a different species each day of the program. All crafts, lessons and other activities center on the species of the day. “So they may have weights and measures every day but how you weigh and measure a tortoise is different than how you weigh and measure an alligator,” said PHS Vice President Debbie Gibson. She added that the camp helps students not only learn to love animals, but to work hard, study animals, take notes and more. “We enjoy caring for the animals, of course, but it’s not all fun and games,” she said. Still, she said, she’s never had a bad review.
On the final day of camp, parents are asked to arrive an hour early for pickup, and Campers become “junior herpetologists” and campers act as guides, leading focus on a different species each day of the the adults around the sanctuary program. and teaching them about reptiles. excellent allies. Slip! Slop! Slap! Summer Sun Safety the FDA started measuring for UVA Chen-Tsai also suggested eye wear that By Tracy House Summer means swimming, and the Town of Gilbert has four public pools offering open swim, aquatic lessons and swim and dive teams to splash into the season. The official Town of Gilbert summer swim season began Saturday, May 24, and runs through Saturday, Aug. 2. Weekday and Saturday hours of operations vary by location; all locations are closed Sundays. Public swim fees are $3 for adults 18 and older; $1 for youth 17 and younger. For more information, visit the Town’s Splash Guide at www.gilbertaz.gov/ departments/parks-and-recreation/ aquatics. Before heading out the pool, though, Dr. Catherine Chen-Tsai of East Valley Dermatology offered suggestions and safeguards against the sun’s harmful rays based on the American Cancer
Society’s Slip! Slop! Slap! awareness campaign. Slip! Chen-Tsai said to slip into the shade and sun protective clothing. “A lot of the kids will wear a very thin white T-shirt, but that only gives the equivalent of an SPF 3. A lot of people don’t know that...a thin T-shirt only gives you a low protective shield and so what we advocate is for people to wear a thicker cotton weave or to put some kind of a pigment into their shirt, like pink or green or blue and that will increase the SPF factor.” Slop! She explained this is basically putting on sunscreen. “The SPF on the bottles only addresses UVB, which is the burning rays...Just last year

effectiveness in sunscreen.” Chen-Tsai said to look for “Broad Spectrum” on the label, right beside the SPF. It will say “Broad Spectrum” if it is UVA protection. Chen-Tsai continued if the bottle isn’t labeled “Broad Spectrum” it is inadequate for UVA. She also explained that the sunscreen should be SPF 30 and to read the label to look for zinc oxide and titanium. Don’t just buy a sunscreen because it has a SPF 60 to 120 which could have added chemicals, such as octocrylene, that could cause an allergic reaction.
Slap! Put on a hat, Chen-Tsai advised. Using a parasol, umbrellas and seeking shade account for 30 percent of UV protection. “People definitely, even when they put on a hat, they really should put on sunscreen,” she said.
offers UVA and UVB protection. Chen-Tsai said she would like to see schools have children wear widebrimmed hats during recess to avoid sun exposure. “Kids’ skin is immature and they don’t have the layers of skin that can truly protect the pigmented cells from ultraviolet light and so when kids go out in the sun they’re getting more ultraviolet effects than adults get.” There are three types of skin cancers— basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (most common and nonmelanoma skin cancers) and melanoma (the most deadly form of skin cancer). Men primarily develop melanoma on the back. For women, it’s on the legs. “The statistics now are probably that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime,” Chen-Tsai said. ... continues on page 17

Tips to Save on Your Family Vacation mom cents

Summer is here and if you are like me, you are probably looking forward to a family vacation. If you are trying to stick to a budget, planning can be painful—but it doesn’t have to be! Check out my tips below to help you save on your next vacation. Hotel: Groupon.com and Livingsocial. com are just a few of the daily deal sites that offer discounts on hotels, restaurants, events and entire vacation packages. Before you book, check these sites out to see if your travel destination is listed so you can save up to 70 percent. Savvy Tip: Look for hotels that offer additional perks like complimentary breakfast or evening happy hour. Flying: Apply for an airline credit card for perks like flier miles and no baggage fees. Just check the fine print to make sure the card will be worth the savings. If you are paying baggage fees, do it online before you photo page

go to save on additional surcharges that can added on. Savvy Tip: Sign up for airline email mailing lists to be the first to know about specials, like reduced rates, free upgrades or checked bags, through the year. Car Trips: Make sure your car is ready for a trip by having it serviced before you go. Don’t forget to check the tire pressure for safety and because it can burn more gasoline when they are underinflated. Sign up for a fuel rewards credit card or grocery card that can help you save. If you are staying in the state, both Fry’s and Safeway have fuel reward promotions that can help you save.
Savvy Tip: Use Gasbuddy.com to find the cheapest gas near you anywhere in the country. Activities: Research your destination before leaving home. Many cultural institutions offer free or reduced price admission on certain days. Likewise, tourist cards that give discounts to multiple attractions or unlimited public transit for a set period can save you money over purchasing admission independently. Food: Pack snacks for the trip and ask for a refrigerator for your hotel room. Don’t be afraid to grocery shop in your destination so you aren’t dining out frequently. Savvy Tip: Restaurant.com, Groupon.com and Amazon Local all have deals to help you save on events or dining out in various cities.

Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old. “It’s the No.1 form of cancer,” Chen-Tsai said. “And it’s the second most common form of cancer for kids 15 to 29 years old.” Another point she mentioned is that the rate of melanoma is rising faster among the 15 to 29 year olds females than males and may be related to using tanning beds. Following the “A-BC-D-E” rule is one way of being aware and monitoring for changes. A-B-C-D-E A is for asymmetry, where the one half of the mole doesn’t match the other. border irregularities B suggests where edges are ragged, notched or blurred. C refers to the color not being uniform, with shades of brown, tan and black present. D is for diameter and darkness. Chen-Tsai said to look for anything
greater than 6 mm, but melanomas have been found in moles that are 2 mm with black dots on the skin. So another thing the American Academy of Dermatologists urges is to be aware of the darkness of the mole. E is evolving,” Chen-Tsai explained. “Anything changing, itching or bleeding.” She also mentioned there is one other criteria, the “Ugly Duckling” sign—any moles on the body that don’t look like the others. Chen-Tsai is a provider at East Valley Dermatology, 1100 S. Dobson Rd., Suite 223, Chandler. For more information, visit www.evderm.com or call (480) 821-8888. By Lynette Carrington “The Addams Family” will be presented through the Actor’s Youth Theatre June 25 to July 3, and the organization hosted a workshop to prepare teens for the creepy and ghoulish auditions. “This is the first time this production has been done in Arizona and it’s a brand new play, too,” said Director Marcus Ellsworth to the group of 30 teens who came to get a leg up on the material. “It’s such an ideal thing for you to get comfortable with the material,” added Ellsworth, who is co-directing with Julie Clement. “You’ll be learning a dance and the music.” The workshop was full of teens of all theatrical experiences. “I’ll be auditioning for the part of Wednesday Addams,” said Adyson Nichols, 15. The soon-to-be sophomore at Arête Preparatory Academy has been performing with Actor’s Youth Theatre for three years and has acted
in “The Pajama Game,” “Aida,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Hamlet” and others. “I love the environment here,” Adyson stated, “It’s like one big loving family and it’s not super competitive like some other theaters.” Rachel Spencer, 15, will also be a sophomore at Arête Preparatory Academy and joined Actor’s Youth Theatre about six months ago beginning with voice lessons. “I’ve done ‘Taming of the Shrew’ and ‘Camelot’ so far,” noted Spencer. “I really want to audition for the role of Wednesday.” In contrast, Dallin Urness, a 17-yearold from Mountain View High School was just getting started in theater. “This is my first time here. My friends convinced me to come and they wanted me to get involved,” Urness explained of his foray into acting. “The Addams Family” centers around Wednesday Addams, who finds that she has fallen in love with

a clean-cut “normal” young man. Realizing that her mother, Morticia, could genuinely be “mortified” if she finds out, Wednesday implores her father to keep the secret. Gomez then struggles to keep a balance of understanding his daughter’s wishes and keeping the truth from his beloved Morticia. “They have a love for the dark and the macabre but they do have family values,” explained Ellsworth. Actor’s Youth Theatre is entirely devoted to their kids. “This is your home and when we made this place, we made it for
you,” Ellsworth told the teens at the workshop. Upcoming workshops include “A Totally Tangled Up Workshop,” “Make a Movie Workshop,” “A Frozen Adventure,” “A Playwright’s Workshop” and more. It’s not that I fancy myself a carrot cake expert by any means. I just know a darn good carrot cake when I taste one and this is the best I’ve ever had. I owe a big thanks to Paradise Valley resident Michael Garrett for sending in this “gotta have” version of one of America’s favorite desserts. What makes this recipe so unique? Well, its incredibly moist texture is a result of a couple of fantastic ideas. First, Michael soaks the golden raisins in Grand Marnier, so you get a flavor burst with each bite. Although you can’t taste it, there is crushed pineapple in this recipe, which adds to the moistness. Finally, Michael’s tip for freezing the cake right out of the oven instantly stops the cooking process. Overcooking, of course, can sometimes cause cake to end up a little dry. (The second time I made the cake I didn’t freeze it. Michael’s right. Freezing it makes it much better. I follow this procedure now for all of my cakes and cupcakes.) Also, the recipe calls for toasting the chopped walnuts and the shredded coconut. The

result is a much more complex and memorable flavor profile in every bite. The icing? In a word, extraordinary. As Michael wrote, “First, I worked on perfecting the cake. Then I worked on the frosting. Usually I don’t like lots of powdered sugar in a frosting, but this is nice and creamy, and I love the tartness created by adding the lemon juice.” In fact, this frosting has the most gorgeous, lustrous, almost iridescent, sheen to it! Way to go, Michael. All of your hours in the kitchen really paid off. This one is 2-“carrot” gold! If dad loves a carrot cake, this is the one to make for Father’s Day!

Thai Chili on the town

Remember back in high school when you wrote a paper on a subject you knew little about? Well, that’s how I felt this month as I reviewed a Thai restaurant. I don’t really know why, but I have only eaten Thai food a handful of times. However, my visit to Thai Chili certainly persuaded me to expand my palate. Thai Chili is located adjacent to Val Vista Lakes in a little plaza that houses several other eateries. Although small, the interior is classy with its dark wood tables and chairs and burnt orange walls adorned with authentic artwork. My daughter and granddaughter accompanied me on a lunch date and we were welcomed by our charming server, Samantha. She gave us a lunch menu with several items all for just $7.99 as well as the main menu, which features 84 selections. We selected the drunken noodles ($10), beef panang ($12), red curry comm. spotlight

pork ($12) and the crispy chicken with spicy plum sauce ($12). Samantha asked us to choose a number from one to five to indicate how spicy we wanted our food. She also told us that she would deliver our food “as soon as it hits the window” so that it would be at the perfect temperature, rather than waiting for all the dishes at once. Hailey, age 4, loved the drunken noodles with baby corn, zucchini, peppers and mushrooms. She was given some “cheater chopsticks” which have a little plastic piece to hold the sticks together. She did great and could even eat her rice without using a fork. Katie and I enjoyed each of the other selections. The beef panang “one of the masterpieces of Thai cuisine,” according to the menu, was simmered in a wonderful blend of panang curry paste, bell peppers, coconut milk and basil. Are Smartphones Making Our Kids Selfie Absorbed? No, this isn’t another article about the dangers of texting and driving. We can’t ignore the startling reality Kevin J. Chapman that our children are growing up faced with the lure of ever-expanding technology. It seems some of our teenagers are living half (or less) of their life in the actual world and the other half in the digital world. We can’t be so naïve as to think this is normal or healthy or preparing them for the future. Who decreed that all teenagers and even children were required to have their own cell or smartphone? Why do we as parents feel peer pressure to make sure our children have the latest and the greatest? Who are we trying to impress? Are we becoming so shallow that we need smartphones and apps to show everyone exactly who we want to be rather than who we are? Do we really need instant, constant and portable access to videos, games and television shows? I’ve seen teenagers and adults out on dates, constantly checking or typing something on their phones. I’ve heard of teenagers giving their friends the “play by play” of how a date is going. I wonder if they tell the truth: “Date’s not so good. Why? Because I’m obsessed with my phone.” Are our texts, tweets and emails so important that we need to be checking them virtually nonstop? Do we really measure our self-worth by how many Facebook friends or Twitter followers we have? June 2014
I really believe smartphones are making us numb to the world. We are becoming like little children who need constant entertainment and stimulation. Years ago Robin Williams said that giving his kids a Nintendo video game was like giving them the ultimate cocaine. We have now enhanced that addiction with the unbridled use of smartphones. We have become an addicted society. As I sat in the airport recently, I watched people texting on their smartphones, emailing on their smartphones and even watching television on their smartphones. Heaven forbid anyone look up and make eye contact with a stranger. What happened to driving in a car and just looking out the window? Are your kids giving up the entire physical world for a narcissistic, addictive need to follow someone or see who’s following them? What happened to the art of conversation between two people? Do we constantly need to be stimulated by our phones? It’s ridiculous. Are our teenagers learning how to communicate and interact face-to-face with other humans, rather than through a text or Instagram? How will they do one day in a job interview? Kevin J. Chapman is a partner at Rowley Chapman and Barney. He attended Arizona State University (B.S. 1986; J.D. 1992). His practice revolves around accidents and personal injury and he can be reached at (480) 8331113.

Living Word: Come As You Are Living Word Bible Church has been an active part of the Valley since 1985. The congregation has grown considerably since then and the dynamic church invites one and all to “come as you are” and welcomes everyone equally with open arms. Pastor Scot Anderson works alongside his wife, Pastor Holly Anderson, at the Mesa and Scottsdale churches in focusing on personal development. “I couldn’t do it without her,” Scot Anderson said. “We work as much as we can together since we have five kids...She helps me with all the marriage conferences and she’s there, of course, Saturday and Sunday running services.” Holly Anderson hosts the monthly Moms of Destiny group when moms get together and learn how to pray for their kids’ success.
