hen it comes to teaching, Sherry MacEwen shares a passion for providing her students the best environment in which to learn and grow as young scholars. MacEwen, who teaches kindergarten at Hermosa Vista Elementary School in Mesa, was drawn to become a teacher once she had her three children. “I wanted to help kids expand their minds,” she said. She said she believed Mesa Public Schools (MPS) was a perfect fit for her as a teacher because her children graduated from the school district. MacEwen has spent the past 10 years teaching at Hermosa Vista, where she taught kindergarten for nine years and third grade for one. “My job is to provide not only the academics, but to provide a safe environment so the students can love school,” she said. “Kindergarten is the first step into a school experience for a lot of these kids. If they don’t love their experience, it’s going to be
a struggle for them as they grow up.” MacEwen teaches under a duallanguage immersion structure where her students learn their classroom curriculum in English and Spanish. She began researching the benefits of a dual-language immersion program two years ago with a few of her colleagues and support from the school district. “The program is doing more than I thought it would do for the students,” she said. “The kids are doing remarkable, and it’s been such an amazing program.” MacEwen said the best part of teaching kindergarten is having the chance to watch her students grow and learn each day. “I really don’t consider it work because I love what I do so much,” she said. “I think a lot of people take for granted what these young kids are able to do. I tell parents before school starts that we will hit on all the curriculum points and that their kids will be engaged and challenged.”

Perez, multimedia and graphic design instructor, said his class strives to give students tools not only to succeed in a classroom-setting but in a career field. His 16 years spent at EVIT have been focused on tapping into the interests of each student he comes across. “I always told myself that if there’s nothing else that needs to be taught I would retire,” Perez said. “There’s something every day that I learn, and I share it with my students. To be able to see my students utilize what I taught them is amazing.” Perez’s class is divided into a two-year session, where he teaches the fundamentals of

also reaches out to industries throughout the Valley in order for his students to assist them with any graphic design needs. “We want to give the students the opportunity to gain industry skills,” he said. “My whole vision is we should be teaching students how to gain experience. hen you stop in and try Backyard Taco, try not to fall in love with the cozy atmosphere and tasty food. The casual restaurant has been serving up “food made with love” since opening a little over three years ago. What makes this Mexican food unique is the restaurant’s commitment to bring in fresh ingredients to create flavorful food that’s cooked over a mesquite grill. “Everything we do is fresh and hand-prepared and it’s delicious,” said Russell Beck, vice president of operations for Backyard Taco. Beck said they bring in fresh vegetables, and cut everything by hand. Part of Backyard Taco’s success comes from its authentic flair in its entrees, the other aspect Beck contributes to their customers. “We wouldn’t be successful without all our customers…we’re really thankful the
neighborhood has really taken us in,” Beck said. “So we like to do our part to give back to those that want to come and eat here and support us so that means being very friendly, very helpful in anyway we can.” Backyard Taco’s signature menu item is its carne asada (steak) tacos. The restaurant also serves up marinated chicken, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, all prepared fresh and cooked over an indoor mesquite grill. On being voted into the Best Of Mesa: “It’s an honor because we know the competition is fierce, we know we have some constraints with our current location, it is a little bit on the small side,” Beck said. “We find it an honor that people can overlook some of the logistical issues…and still vote us in the top of Mesa.” Visit Backyard Taco and try one of its signature carne asada tacos served up with an authentic twist.

artending requires more knowledge than just making a drink. It requires social savvy, customer service and a friendly attitude to keep customers coming back. Bartender Ashley Cooper at Desert Eagle Brewing Company has these traits in spades. Cooper said she thinks a misconception about bartending is that people think it’s an easy job or not as respectable as other occupations. “It’s not like that at all,” Cooper said. “We’re basically just in customer service, all we do is make sure everyone has a great experience wherever we work and then it’s a hard job too, you’ve got a lot you have to take care of and a lot you have to know, you have to be on your toes constantly.” Since opening in 2012, Desert Eagle Brewing Company owners Joe Campbell and
Jeff Bryant pride themselves on their commitment to craft and serve quality beers to their customers. “Meeting new people and getting to interact all the time, it’s a fun environment, it’s a great place,” Cooper said of Desert Eagle Brewing Company. Next time you stop in, try one of Desert Eagle’s beers on tap including their Golden Eagle Wheat, Roman Eagle Pale Ale or their Black Talon R.I.S. “It’s pretty awesome, I’m glad that I was able to keep up my good work and make sure all my customers were happy and that they were kind enough to go out and vote for me,” Cooper said on being voted into the Best Of Mesa for the second year in a row. n 2011, Inside the Bungalow won “Best Coffee Shop,” and the voters say they have done it again in 2016. The café focuses on producing wholesome, natural, organic and healthy menu items, including primarily sandwiches and salads. However, they also believe firmly in promoting local businesses and coffee and tea growers and their surrounding communities. The coffee and tea menu is much smaller than that of a typical chain coffee shop, like Starbucks, but offers the delicious essentials. “Eating at the Bungalow is like eating at home,” said Betty Freeman, co-owner of Inside the Bungalow.

weet Cakes celebrated its 10-year anniversary just last year, and it’s no wonder they have been open that long! One look at their so-called “Better Than Sex” brownie or face-sized cinnamon roll will have your mouth watering. Sweet Cakes was even featured on TLC’s “Best Food Ever” TV show. If you just aren’t a “sweets person,” Sweet Cakes also has a relatively large menu of soups, salads and sandwiches. The bakery stands out even more so because even with its high demand, prices on baked goods don’t exceed $3.50. In a world where taking the family out for a treat seems unaffordable, Sweet Cakes is a place where affordability and quality are aplenty.

The restaurant strives to be more than the average bar and grill, focusing on customer engagement and satisfaction. The evening lighting is dim, providing an old-timey bar feel. The Kid’s Menu is diverse, but Flip’s might be a better spot for a family lunch rather than a family dinner — remember, it is a full bar. olce Via Gelato and Grocery is owned and operated by two true Italians. Walter Bergamaschi and Marti Printy trained near Bologna, Italy, in the art of gelato before opening for business in Arizona. While gelato was their initial passion, the couple has gifted Mesa with their authentic Italian deli cuisine. They use only “true Italian ingredients,” including Salumi (Italian cold cuts), imported cheeses including fresh Mozzarella di Bufala, oils, jellies, sauces, cookies and other necessary Italian groceries like coffee, soda, flour and olives. The deli specializes in sandwiches, particularly paninis and pastas. All menu items from the deli, as well as the gelato, are homemade in store without additives and the freshest, healthiest ingredients they can find.

ith the best patients of any practice, Dr. David Warkentin, owner and founder of Verve Wellness Center, says it’s easy to receive the distinction as the Mesa business with the best customer service. Warkentin founded his business to provide a different health care environment. Under the same roof, patients have access to medical, dental, chiropractic and naturopathic care. They can also receive physical therapy, a massage, counseling and participate in yoga and meditation programs. It starts at the entrance, Warkentin said. “I didn’t want people to feel like they were walking into a doctor’s office,” he said. So, he created an office that makes people think they’re walking into a high-end resort. And, his staff spends as much time as needed with each patient. There are no 10-minute appointments at Verve, Warkentin said. Only two patients are scheduled per hour, so each person gets 30 minutes with the doctor. Patients can snack on fresh fruit and pastries in the waiting room or make and drink a latte or other coffee drink while waiting. For the kids, he has PlayStation 3s, XBoxes, movies and hot chocolate. “They never want to leave,” he said with a laugh. Then he decided to be open longer than traditional office hours — 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, including through lunch hours; weekends as needed and having staff on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We are definitely thinking out of the box,” Warkentin said.
And, he makes sure his office keeps up with the changing world, both in equipment and practices. “It’s always been my theory that you have to spend it to earn it,” he said. “If I think it’s good I’ll buy new technology.” Investing in the staff is also important, he said. All the medical providers at Verve have doctorate-level degrees, he said. “There are no PAs here; you see a dentist, a chiropractor or MDs,” he said. Many medical practices hire interim providers, such as physician assistants, Warkentin said, because of financial cutbacks. But, he’s chosen to “go that extra mile for our patients.” Medical practices that follow the plan used by Verve Wellness are becoming more common, he said. And, he’s not ready to stop making things better for his patients. Next up is a renewed focus on opening the Verve Health Care Center at Indian Bend and Loop 101. Warkentin referred to the planned 5-story, 110,000-square-foot building as “gorgeous.” The engineering and design work for the project are finished and permits have been obtained. He’s waiting to see what Congress does related to the Affordable Care Act before finalizing plans for the campus. It would also offer patients essentially any type of medical care they need under one roof, with even more specialists working there. It would also include a teaching facility. “People want customer service back,” Warkentin said.

athy Eastman, curator of education at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, said her facility has the “wow” factor with dinosaurs that roar and an indoor three-story waterfall. Our readers think so as well, voting the Arizona Museum of Natural History the best museum. But the museum is so much more than dinosaurs and water, she said. “What is really important is welcoming our visitors and providing a fun and special experience accessible to everyone,” she said. Visitors to the Arizona Museum of Natural History can get a variety of interactive experiences such as puzzles, gold panning and digging for a dinosaur. “On March 25, we are hosting the ever-popular Dino Egg Hunt, and during the summer, we have amazing kids’ camps,” Eastman said.
For adults, there’s the Beer N’ Bones fundraiser on April 22. The event is so popular that it regularly sells out. “Adults visiting the museum have the opportunity to view one of the best collections of Mesoamerican and Hohokam artifacts in Arizona, learn about Arizona in the Movies, plus our mineral and mining galleries,” she said. “Many adults enjoy coming with children, but also have fun leaving the kids home and spending time exploring their interests.” Eastman is pleased that that resonates with visitors as well. “As part of the city of Mesa we are very honored to have our visitors hold AzMNH in high esteem,” Eastman explained. “Arts and cultural services are so important and to be voted as part of the top three, we know we are contributing to the quality of life in the East Valley.”

ears ago, Mesa was in need of an animal hospital, and Dr. Michael Kleban was happy to oblige. In 1994, Kleban founded Red Mountain Animal Hospital and the rest is history. “I have an entrepreneurial spirit,” Kleban said, “I wanted to be able to provide the level of care that I believe in at an affordable price. What better way than by being my own boss?” The hospital is staffed by four full-time veterinarians, including Kleban, and offer a wide and all-encompassing array of animal health care services. Among the services offered at Red Mountain Animal Hospital include animal dentistry, heartworm prevention and testing, radiology and prescription foods along with the standard spay/neutering, surgical and microchipping services for dogs and cats of all ages. Red Mountain Animal Hospital also tries to make things as easy as possible for clients and their pets. The new client form that needs to be completed is available online.

ritter Caretakers is Mesa’s favorite pet sitter for the third year in a row! The business offers in-home and overnight pet sitting as well as other services throughout Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler with the guarantee that all pets will be treated like family. The biggest factors, though, are affordability and accessibility. Those are what Kleban strives for in his practice. “Our focus is on making sure that all pet owner’s are able to keep their pets healthy. We keep our care affordable and accessible,” he said. “I think of myself as a general practitioner, offering our clients and their pets primary health care. We know our patients well and strive to provide individualized care plans that meet the needs of every particular patient.”

ike many who pursue the dental field, Dr. Alice Hsieh of the Verve Wellness Center got into it by watching her family. She soon got enraptured in it, getting her degree from the University of California, San Francisco and hasn’t looked back. She takes particular pride in the quality of care she is able to provide. And when she fixes smiles, she likes to make her clients smile as well. “I pride myself in the care and quality of treatment I provide to each and every patient in my chair,” she said. “My goal is for each patient to feel completely at ease with all treatment, to have a clear understanding
of the medicine surrounding my clinical decision making and ultimately, in combination with all of these items, keeping them at ease with a good sense of humor and bedside manner.” Hsiesh’s specialty lies in prosthodontics, which is the specialization of placement of dental implants. But what Hsieh enjoys most is how happy she can make someone by helping them improve their oral health. “The joy of changing a person’s life by creating a gorgeous, healthy smile is one of the intangible rewards of being a dentist that can’t be measured,” she said.

BEST CHIROPRACTOR
DR. DAVID WARKENTIN
Verve Wellness Center • 4824 E. Baseline Road, Suites 140 and 110 • 480-969-4040 or vervewellnesscenter.com
V
erve Wellness Center sprung out of Dr. David Warkentin’s early days in practice when he operated a solo chiropractic office. Warkentin, who grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, did his undergrad work at the University of Manitoba and earned his doctoral degree in Atlanta. He worked at a practice in Seattle for a couple of years right after graduating. That job is part of the reason he’s made Verve Wellness Center a state-of-the-art facility. The chiropractor he worked with in Seattle wasn’t keen on spending too much money on the office, a fact that still bothers Warkentin. “Who wants to work or go to an office with orange shag carpet? No one,” he said, laughing. Warkentin didn’t like the rain in Seattle much. His parents had a winter home in Arizona, and he visited them for about 20 years. After seeing “guys at the Phoenix airport wearing shorts during the winter,” Warkentin
decided this was the place for his practice. He moved here and opened a solo office in 2001. Just a few years in, he realized it was time to expand. “Single doctor offices are on the way out,” Warkentin said. So he first added a medical component to the office and expanded from there. “People said I couldn’t do that,” he said of adding medical doctors. “That meant I’d go to the ends of the earth to do it.” He now gets approached by solo practitioners who want to become part of a larger — but not enormous — medical group. When a new doctor joins and brings a patient base, “that lets us grow even further,” Warkentin said. He doesn’t consider it at all unusual that he, a chiropractor, owns the facility that also employs medical doctors. “People ask me how MDs feel working with a chiropractor. I tell them they don’t work with me, they work for me, so they better feel OK about it.”

f there is one reason why Dr. Tyler Robison got into orthodontics, it’s because of the people. He enjoys helping them, giving back and making them more confident in themselves through fixing their smiles. “I think the best thing is just taking a patient who has gnarly, messed-up teeth and just giving them a (beautiful) smile,” Robison said. “It’s most rewarding when patients are embarrassed to smile and their personality is such where they’re quiet and looking down all the time and then by the end they’re smiling, and they’re happy, and it literally changes their personality.” Coming from a family of dental practitioners, Robsison received his doctorate in dental medicine from the University of Louisville. Having grown up around the profession, he was naturally drawn in.

But, instead of going the traditional dental route, Robison leaned toward orthodontics instead. “I guess I migrated more toward orthodontics instead of dentistry because it’s such an exciting, uplifting environment,” he said. “People were always happy, people wanted to be there, they were excited to come to the orthodontist. It was a vibrant environment.” And Robison also takes the time to give back as well. He is a part of the Smile Back Foundation, which offers dental scholarships and free dental work to kids who otherwise may not be able to go to the dentist on their own. “For me I just look at what I’ve been blessed with in life and what I have so if I can bring that talent and energy to kids that aren’t able to come in on their own accord and give them that same gift, I think that’s very rewarding,” Robison said.
