3 Kings Barbershop builds culture of precision, teamwork and community in San Marcos
In just 18 months, 3 Kings Barbershop has become a destination for clients across Hays County and beyond — built on a foundation of precision, discipline and a strong group mindset.
Located at 210 N. Edward Gary St., the full-service barbershop offers a wide range of services for all hair types and styles, from fades and tapers to classic gentleman cuts, along with hot towels, eyebrow work and enhancements. That versatility has helped the shop attract clients not only from San Marcos, but from surrounding areas including Austin, Buda, Kyle, New Braunfels, Seguin, Lockhart and Gonzales.
“We take pride in providing a great service but also giving you a great experience,” said John “Tiny” Cardenas, who helps lead the shop. “Our vision is built on precision, discipline and commitment. With our focus on this, we are successful as a team.”
That standard begins with the environment.
Designed with a clean, modern look, 3 Kings Barbershop is built to be welcoming from the moment clients walk in — a place where people feel comfortable and part of something larger than just an appointment.
“We make all customers feel like family, not just another number walking in the door,” Cardenas said.
That approach is driven by the barbers behind the chairs.
The shop is home to nine barbers, each bringing their own strengths while working together to maintain a high level of quality. From detailed design work to specialty services like perms and color, each barber contributes to the overall standard while supporting one another day to day.
“My team is a special group,” Cardenas said. “They all know how to work with each other, respect each other and enjoy life outside of work. When you have a team like that, it makes the business stronger.”
Cardenas’ path into the industry spans nearly two decades.
He has been connected to barbering since 2006, eventually forming a close relationship with the original founder of 3 Kings Barbershop. What started as a connection between client and barber grew into a partnership, with Cardenas helping develop shops in other markets before bringing the concept to San Marcos.
Now, that vision is entering its next phase.
3 Kings Barbershop is currently expanding, with plans to open a larger space by summer 2026 and add six additional barbers. The move is designed to meet demand while maintaining the consistency and environment that have defined the shop since day one.
At the same time, the business remains committed to giving back across Hays County.
The shop regularly participates in local outreach, including back-to-school events and support for youth programs such as GSMYC, along with sponsorships at the middle school and high school level.
“We’re always about giving back,” Cardenas said.
That combination of service, atmosphere and community involvement has helped 3 Kings Barbershop earn recognition in the Best of Hays awards — a reflection of the support from its clients and the relationships built along the way.

For Jared Villanueva, known to clients as JJ Fadez, barbering started early — but more importantly, it started with purpose.
At just 14 years old, what began as a simple skill quickly became something bigger. Barbering gave him direction during formative years, teaching discipline, work ethic and the value of building relationships.
“Barbering gave me purpose early on,” Villanueva said.
Over time, that foundation turned into a career centered on attention to detail and reliability, helping people feel their best.
Today, Villanueva has become a trusted name in San Marcos, known for delivering clean, modern cuts tailored to each individual. Specializing in fades, tapers and detailed beard work, he approaches every appointment with a consultation-first mindset, making sure each style fits not just the client’s look, but their personality and lifestyle.

As a first-generation Texas State University student studying advertising, Villanueva has applied what he’s learned to build his brand and connect with clients. Susan Cole understands that firsthand.
After adopting a young cattle dog named Pepper, Cole found herself facing severe reactivity that made everyday life difficult. Walks became stressful, encounters with other dogs were unpredictable and the situation inside the home was just as challenging. Several trainers offered the same advice: return the dog.
Instead, Cole went looking for another solution.

What began as helping friends, neighbors and family members with their own dogs gradually grew into a full-time business. Now approaching its 10th year, Calm Family Dog Training serves clients throughout the region, working with families from Austin to San Antonio.
“Calm Family Dog Training helps families that are struggling with their pet dog’s unwanted behaviors,” Cole said.

As Calm Family Dog Training enters its 10th year, the business continues to grow through word of mouth and community trust, including being named Best Dog Trainer in this year’s Best of Hays awards. Cole said she is grateful for the continued support from local families.
At its core, the mission remains simple and consistent with the experience that started it all: helping families feel confident, restoring calm in the home and creating dogs that can truly be part of everyday life.

As broker-owner of Nest Mortgaging, Billé has built her business around a strategy-first approach to home financing, one that focuses on long-term outcomes rather than one-time transactions. Based in Kyle and serving clients throughout Texas and Colorado, she operates as an independent broker with access to hundreds of loan programs and lending partners, allowing her to tailor solutions to each client’s unique goals.
That flexibility allows Billé to work with a wide range of clients, from first-time homebuyers to seasoned real estate investors and business owners. In addition to residential lending, Nest Mortgaging also assists with refinancing, new construction, and commercial financing, including business loans and real estate investments nationwide.
“What sets me apart is my approach. I don’t treat mortgages as transactions. I treat them as part of a larger financial strategy,” Billé said. “As a broker, I’m not limited to one set of products, which allows me to truly customize solutions based on each client’s goals.”
That philosophy is rooted in her own experience. Before launch-
ing Nest Mortgaging in 2022, Billé spent 17 years as a high school math teacher and coach, building a foundation in communication, leadership and education. She also began investing in real estate in 2014, gaining firsthand insight into how financing can be used as a tool to build long-term wealth.

Established in 2015, Newman & Company has grown into a fullscale aesthetic and wellness practice in New Braunfels, offering a comprehensive approach that goes beyond traditional spa services. Today, the business brings together clinical precision and personalized care under one roof, allowing clients to move seamlessly between treatments designed to support both confidence and overall wellness.
That range spans everything from skincare, lash and brow services and aesthetic treatments to body sculpting, regenerative and functional medicine and medical weight loss. Set to open this summer, the expanded space is designed to elevate the client experience even further, offering additional capacity, enhanced services and a more immersive environment.

St. John is also supported by three deacons, Jessie Mojica, Robert Gutierrez and Eugene Wohlfarth, who assist with Masses, funerals and other church events while also leading monthly baptisms. The church offers four weekend Masses, including a Spanish-language service, along with daily Mass Tuesday through Friday, ensuring consistent opportunities for worship and connection. Religious education programs serve both children and adults, while Bible studies, evangelization efforts and specialized ministries for men, women and youth help deepen engagement within the parish. Retreats offered in both English

Supporting the clergy is a dedicated staff and volunteer base that helps carry out the day-to-day mission of the church. Maria Elena Urrutia, who has served the parish for 35 years, remains a trusted presence for parishioners, while Business Administrator Jenifer Taylor brings extensive experience in accounting and management. Connie Ramirez oversees children’s religious education, managing more than 300 students, and Brenda Wohlfarth coordinates adult education, events and liturgy, drawing from a diverse professional background. Brother Alex, the church’s sacristan and a member of Discipulos de Jesus, supports the liturgical life of the parish.
Beyond worship, the church’s leadership continues to guide its outreach efforts in the community. St. John partners with St. Vincent de Paul to provide assistance with food, clothing and temporary housing for those in need in the San Marcos area. The parish also supports The Gabriel Project, offering donations that help young mothers and families.
Annual events such as the Fourth of July celebration, Fiesta and Christmas Bazaar bring the community together in fellowship, further reflecting the welcoming spirit fostered by the church’s leadership.

For 20 years, The Palm Cafe #2 has been serving San Marcos the kind of breakfast that feels like home — a place where every plate reflects what owner Olga Alvarado calls “the taste of a meal made with love.”
That approach has helped earn the restaurant this year’s Best of Hays award for Best Breakfast, but for Alvarado and her family, the recognition is simply a reflection of what they have worked to build since opening their first location in New Braunfels on Nov. 22, 2005.
“We are very grateful to our customers for their great support, and that’s why our approach when serving our food is as if we were serving our own family at home,” Alvarado said. “We want you to feel the love and dedication we put into our food.”
That philosophy carries through every part of the experience. From homemade tortillas and gorditas to a menu that serves breakfast all day, The Palm Cafe #2 focuses on simple, consistent meals made with care. Whether customers stop in early or later in the afternoon, the kitchen is still serving up breakfast favorites without compromise.
That flexibility is something customers notice.
“Our customers always tell us thank you for the family atmosphere, for always trying to ensure their satisfaction with the service, and above all, for letting them come and enjoy their breakfast without any rush after midday,” Alvarado said.
In a fast-paced world, that unhurried experience has become one of the restaurant’s defining traits — a place where guests can sit down, take their time and enjoy a meal the way it was meant to be.
Behind the scenes, that consistency starts with the team. The Palm Cafe #2 employs 23 people, with several staff members who have been part of the restaurant for more than seven years. As a family-owned operation, creating a supportive workplace is a priority.

That sense of family extends beyond a single location. The Palm Cafe #2 is part of a broader network of family-run restaurants across Central Texas, including The Palm Cafe in San Marcos, Palm Restaurant in New Braunfels, The Palm Taqueria in Seguin, Spicy Bite in Kyle and Chepos in San Marcos.
Each location shares the same foundation, built from years of experience working in restaurants throughout the community before opening their own business.
“We decided to start this business thanks to the experience we gained in our past when we were employed in some restaurants in this community,” Alvarado said.
Today, that experience continues to guide the restaurant as it serves customers Tuesday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with breakfast available all day. The restaurant closes at 2 p.m. on Sundays and remains closed on Mondays.
