Host Sean Hoy brings his talents to the expos BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI Sean Hoy likes to say he has three talents: humoring, cartooning and interviewing. “When I was younger, I always had little talk shows,” he says with a laugh. “I’d even interview myself – ‘What do you think about that, Sean?’ ‘I think that’s great, Sean!’ ‘What’s a great idea, Sean!’” When he hosts the Lovin’ Life After 50 Expos, he incorporates the skill set. “I love doing those,” says Hoy, who will appear January 16 in Tucson, January 23 in Sun City, and January 31 in Mesa. “I have such a free rein of just being me and bringing my personality. I just love it. I’ve been doing it now for three years. It’s neat that I get to see the same people I’ve befriended. It’s such a neat thing.” Hoy is a multitalent. He hosts the web series The Howlarius Show, in which he interviews people about their dogs. An avid canine lover, Hoy, who has worked with the Arizona Humane Society, has found his calling. Visit hoylarious.com for more information. “I had my Hoylarious show on Dave Pratt’s Star Worldwide Networks, and I would interview musicians, artists and

politicians. It was a variety-type talk show,” Hoy says. “Sometimes, people wouldn’t talk. These are people who have performed in front of thousands of people. Then I’d say, ‘What about your dog, Sparky,’ or whatever, and they would just start talking. One thing led to another, I changed the Y to a W and we have The Howlarious Show.”

Sean Hoy...continued from page 5 Recently, his cartooning skills came into play when he painted murals at bird-themed The Perch Brewery, 232 S. Wall Street in downtown Chandler. “I’ve done placemats, too, along with discount cards, gift cards and a pedicab,” he says. “I did a mural about how beer is made. It’s ‘Hoy style’ with birds. It takes you from how beer is made through serving beer. It’s 15 feet long and that was really fun.” The two murals on the upper level of The Perch have a whimsical feel. Soon, he will begin work on a rustic mural on a brick wall within The Perch, and he will jazz up the brewery’s food truck. Hoy was born in Alexandria, Virginia. His father was the White House photographer for The Washington Post from 1963 to 1972. His mother worked there, as well. “He has pictures of Kennedy, Nixon and Johnson,” he says. “He has pictures of him and Johnson shaking hands and talking. He earned a doctorate and taught at Syracuse, before coming here to help start the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication with the man he called ‘Wally.’ “Photojournalism was his thing at ASU. I was the State Press cartoonist for three and a half years and he mentored photographers. We were very close.” Hoy has worked with underprivileged children, and also does corporate training.

Hoy poses with one of his murals at The Perch.

“I go to different companies and teach the staff how to communicate better with improv techniques,” Hoy says. “I don’t like to say ‘comedy,’ because people will think it’s dirty.” He’s not one to take any of his talents for granted. “Every day, I am grateful for all my talents,” he says. “I want to use them to the best of my abilities. I want people to smile. I don’t need a belly laugh. When people say, ‘You’re a breath of fresh air,’ that’s the best compliment in the world. If I made you smile or made your dog wag his tail, that’s my day. I’m done. Drop the mic.”

SUN CITY EXPO PROGRAM | JANUARY 2018

Iora Primary Care is shaking up how seniors are treated BY BECKY BRACKEN In a happy, sunlit room, six Mesa seniors gathered around a large table for a couple of hours of sharing and storytelling. There’s a former farmer and his wife, a man who just celebrated his 80th birthday who used to work in the cotton fields, and a woman who worked on commercial fishing boats in Alaska. They told tales about their childhood, their loves lost and found, and laughed. What might not be obvious at first glance is that these seniors are at their doctor’s office, Iora Primary Care, a new kind of primary care doctor’s office with the aim of treating seniors as whole people, rather than just a chart of ailments and medications. Iora, which is partnered with Humana, wants to shake up the way seniors 65 and older get their care, and in turn, live their lives. Storytelling is just one part of that. The storytelling session opened with a brief presentation from Iora’s staff Health Coaches, who talked about the benefits of storytelling to everyday health and wellness. From forming a more meaningful connection with others to helping with memory, recounting tales from days past has a direct impact on the health of these seniors, and getting them together to share is just one part of how Iora’s team wants to engage their patients in an entirely new way. Just walk in the front door to the practice, and it’s obvious there’s nothing run-of-the-mill about what’s happening there. Puzzles in varying stages of completion sit on big meeting tables in the lobby. There’s always a bustling schedule at Iora. Yoga, Silver Sneakers, classes on balance and healthy habits are all offered weekly, in addition to the standard doctor visits. The facility itself is tailor-made for seniors, according to the practice’s clinical team manager, Sarah Cabou, with wide doors for easy wheelchair access, low exam tables so tender knees and hips don’t get over-extended and large monitors hanging over tables that let patients see in real time what doctors are adding to their medical records. And because not all visits to Iora require a physical exam, comfortable rooms with couches are available for patients to just sit and talk if that’s all they need. The practice opened its Higley location in late 2016 and already has more than 400 patients. Cabou said they’re looking to add more. So far, patients seem to be enjoying the change of pace from a typical primary care practice model. “How could I get any better than this?” one patient, a 91-year-old man, attending the storytelling session with his wife, said. “I’m spending the afternoon sharing with you fine people. This beats sitting at home any day.” Iora Primary Care has seven locations throughout the Valley. For more information, visit ioraprimarycare.com. www.LovinLifeAfter50.com

Celebrating the

Age of

Elegance Leta Sproule finds Ms. Senior Arizona prize inspiring BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Leta Sproule was at peace as she awaited her turn to compete in the 2017 Ms. Senior Arizona Pageant. Usually, before she sits down at her piano, her hands get cold, forcing her to wear gloves to literally warm up for her performance. Butterflies fill her body. None of that happened this time. Her cool yet playful demeanor and artistic talents led to her coronation. “They had told us that we would have a few nerves,” says Sproule, who lives in Sun City West with her husband of 21 years, John. “A few jitters are good, I guess. But I truly understood for the first time that true peace surpasses understanding.” Since last March, Sproule has been promoting Ms. Senior Arizona’s mission of giving women ages 60 and older – otherwise known as “the age of elegance” – the opportunity to display their inner beauty, talents, charm and elegance. She has attended parades, benefits and special events geared toward seniors, and supported the Cameo Foundation, which provides resources to domestic violence survivors. Sproule, 67, learned about the Ms. Senior Arizona Pageant through a friend. Sproule Googled the event, looked at photographs of previous winners and read the mission statement. 10 SUN CITY EXPO PROGRAM | JANUARY 2018

“At first, I said, ‘No, no, no,’” Sproule says with her slight Southern accent. “Then I prayed. I said, ‘God, if you can be glorified in this, I will do it.’” She thought that no amount of prayers would lead to a victory at the pageant, run by former winner Herme Sherry and her husband, Ken. Sproule’s performance belied that at the pageant in Surprise on March 18, 2017. She confidently moved from her piano to the stage for a flamenco dance to original music. For her efforts, she not only won Ms. Senior Arizona, but Most Photogenic, Most Elegant and tied for Best Philosophy with Mesa resident Shirlene Rutledge. More importantly, she earned a group of lifelong friends, including fellow contestant Bonnie Sisson of Scottsdale.

Longtime musician

Sproule was born in Tennessee and spent her formative years in Nashville. She attended Peabody College, which was absorbed into Vanderbilt University, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music and human resources, respectively. After graduation, she worked as a financial planner for nonprofits and schools.

Elegance...continued on page 11 www.LovinLifeAfter50.com

Elegance...continued from page 10 “I loved helping people in the not-for-profit c o m m u n i t y ,” Sproule says. “I always loved numbers and I put on my Ms. Senior Arizona Pageant bio that I have an interest in macroeconomics. There probably wasn’t anybody else who said that. “When I was growing up, and other kids were learning nursery rhymes, I was learning to Leta Sproule, Ms. Senior Arizona 2017. (Photos by never purchase a Kimberly Carrillo) depreciating asset on credit. It took me a long time to learn what a depreciating asset was. I also learned very early on that if you save by the 10th, you can earn interest from the 1st. There’s 10 extra days of interest earned. It was natural for me to help teachers and not-for-profits.” Sproule was slow to appreciate Nashville’s vibrant country music scene. She loved Elvis Presley and eventually grew to enjoy singers like Carrie Underwood. Music, as a whole, inspired her, though. Sproule first sat down to the piano at age 8 and it came easily to her. “When it came time for college, of course I was going to major in music,” she says with a smile. “Peabody was right there. I went there and got my degree. I had a couple kids along the way. “When I was in college, I switched to organ instead of piano. When I graduated, I was playing in a lot of churches around town. Instead of playing every Sunday, I would substitute so I could be with my family.” The Sproules moved to Anthem in 2001. They lived there for eight years, until John’s corporate investments and pension sales job took them back to Nashville. With each move, her piano came along. “John retired four years ago and it was just an obvious choice to move back to Arizona,” Sproule says. “It wasn’t until I moved here that I picked up the piano again. It was God’s timing. I truly had not played the piano – only for a little bit – in 20 years.” Her church, Palm West Community Church in Sun City West, asked her to play piano, as well. “I never played piano in church when they asked me to do that,” she says. “I had to start practicing again. John was www.LovinLifeAfter50.com

grateful. He had not heard me practice. “I’m not sure I would have had the nerve to do the pageant if I hadn’t started playing piano again. I want to encourage other women to participate. It truly is a life-changing experience, win or not.”

Show Off Your Talents The search is on for the Cameo Foundation’s 29th annual Ms. Senior Arizona 2018 contestants. Open to women ages 60 and older, the pageant is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at Valley Vista Performing Arts Center, 15550 N. Parkview Place, Surprise. Radio personality Danny Davis will once again emcee. For contestant or pageant information, call 602-7889556, email msseniorarizona2004@cox.net, or visit cameofoundation.org or msseniorarizona.com. The event is sponsored by Times Media Group and Lovin’ Life After 50, John Wallick Jewelers, Rose Tuxedo, Applause Productions, Cummins Photography, Sierra Winds Senior Living, Freedom Inn at Scottsdale, Gartman Technical Services, Moore Graphics and Heritage Tradition.

Humble Gratitude The Duttons’ matriarch is grateful for family time BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI Sheila Dutton never expected she would become a musician. Her husband, Dean, was a tenured economics professor, and she saw music as a “true weakness.” Now the couple lead The Duttons, a multigenerational family of musicians who found fame thanks, in part, to appearances on the second season of America’s Got Talent. “I never imagined I’d be in music, period,” she says with a laugh. “I am the most unlikely person in the world to be doing what we’re doing. I was slow to come around to the idea. I thought it was maybe a frivolous activity, going around performing for people. “I had a series of experiences that really opened my eyes to the effect music has on people,” she adds without elaborating. “Then, after several of those experiences in the 1980s and 1990s, I supported what the kids wanted to do. My husband took an early retirement to do this full time.” The Branson, Missouri-based band is currently in Mesa for its winter residency at the Dutton Theater Mesa at East Valley High School. The family has performed there since 2005, and in 2010, it partnered with EVHS to renovate and update its auditorium.

The Duttons have five shows during their time here, which began December 9 and wraps March 31. This month, a variety show comes to EVHS from Thursday, January 18, to Saturday, January 27. Pickin’ and G r i n n i n ’ Sheila Dutton says “there’s something about the family that s h o w c a s e s resonates with a lot of people.” (Photo courtesy The Duttons) The Duttons’ favorite bluegrass and country tunes from Thursday, February 1, to Saturday, February 24. The band will “Duttonize” rock songs from Thursday, March 1, to Saturday, March 17, and it performs its most requested tracks from Thursday, March 22, to Saturday, March 31, during End the Season in Style. The Duttons skipped their New Year’s Eve shows last month because it fell on a Sunday, the day they do not perform. “We feel honored to be able to do this because of the sweet experiences and the joy we feel, and the happiness that so many people experience when they come to our show,” she says. “It leaves me with this feeling of humble gratitude, like how can anything so good happen? There’s something about the family that resonates with a lot of people. This has done so much for our relationship with our children. They knew they were loved because we practiced with them every day. It’s not the material things you do for your children. It’s the time we spent with the kids that has made a huge difference in our family.”

Cameo Foundation aids domestic violence shelters BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI When Herme Sherry was named Ms. Senior Arizona in 2004, she was asked what she planned to do during her reigning year. “I said, ‘I want to help somebody,’” Sherry said. She, in turn, created the Cameo Foundation, the beneficiary of the Ms. Senior Arizona Pageant. The Cameo Foundation originally raised funds for Alzheimer’s disease associations, but Sherry has since changed her focus to domestic violence shelters because, she said, the need is greater there. “We felt that cancer and heart disease and Alzheimer’s get national help, but domestic violence does not,” Sherry said. Sherry said now is the time to start talking openly about domestic violence. “When I grew up, it was a secret,” she said. “You didn’t talk about it. It still is, to a certain degree. Ladies need to know that they do have an option. They don’t have to stay. The children are frozen in fear. And shelters are struggling for funds to keep the doors open.” The Cameo Foundation holds fundraisers throughout the year to raise monies for those shelters. Keep tabs on cameofoundation.org for a list of those events. This year’s

Winter colds and hearing loss BY KEN ARCIA

Arizona Relay Service

Although the winter months kick off a much-anticipated time of year here in Phoenix, we’re all a bit too familiar with the dreaded winter cold. Along with dropping temperatures come stuffy noses, sore throats and general chest and ear congestion. If you’re quick to react, taking these precautions can help you stop a winter cold in its tracks: Wash your hands. You never know what kinds of germs are being spread throughout your office, or the germs your child may bring home from his or her classroom. Keep hand sanitizer with you at all times and make sure to load up before putting your hands near your face. Keep your hands out of your mouth. This comes straight from tip No. 1. You are constantly picking up germs with your hands, so keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth unless you’re sure your hands are clean. Rest. If you want your immune system to be healthy enough to fight off infection, you need to let it rest. Go to bed early and get good, uninterrupted sleep. Take vitamins and drink water. Give your immune system an extra boost with daily vitamins. The more you can add positives to your body, the more it will be able to keep out viruses.

24

SUN CITY EXPO PROGRAM | JANUARY 2018

Get to the gym. Exercise, especially aerobic, will keep your heart moving, which increases your body’s virus-killing cells. Make sure that if you use a machine or other equipment at the gym, you wipe it down before using it so you don’t pick up any extra germs. If symptoms persist despite taking these precautions, an infection may be looming! When a cold virus develops, fluid can build up in the middle of your ear, preventing sound from traveling correctly from the outer ear to the eardrum. This is why your ears may feel full or conversations sound muffled when you have a cold. Ear infections can also develop when you have a cold due to congestion. If the infection doesn’t go away on its own, medication can be prescribed, but there is also a risk of permanent hearing loss. If hearing loss symptoms brought on by a winter cold persist longer than other symptoms, see your doctor for an in-depth ear check. If your hearing loss from the cold overstays its welcome, you want to make sure there isn’t a more serious issue or permanent damage caused by the virus. Although winter colds may seem inevitable, there are many ways to prevent them. If a cold does end up overstaying its welcome, make sure to get plenty of rest and take care of yourself. If a cold lingers longer than 10 days, it’s time to visit your doctor to rule out other illnesses. Winter is the prime season for these infections to attack, so take precautions early on, and don’t let a cold put a damper on the most wonderful time of the year! Your Medicare costs in 2018 BY GREG DILL How much will your Medicare cost in 2018? The numbers just came out, so let’s go over them. We’ll start with the Medicare Part B premium. Part B covers doctor services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment and other items. The standard monthly premium for people with Part B will be $134 for 2018, the same amount as in 2017. Under the law, people with Part B pay 25 percent of the costs of running the program, with the government picking up 75 percent. A statutory “hold harmless” provision applies each year to about 70 percent of Part B enrollees. For these enrollees, any increase in Part B premiums must be lower than any cost-ofliving increase in their Social Security benefits. After several years of no or very small increases, Social Security benefits will increase by 2 percent in 2018 due to a cost-of-living adjustment. Therefore, some beneficiaries who were held harmless against Part B premium increases in prior years will see a higher premium in 2018. Part B enrollees held harmless in 2016 and 2017 will see an

increase in their Part B premiums from the roughly $109, on average, they paid in 2017. An estimated 42 percent of Part B enrollees are subject to the hold harmless provision in 2018 but will pay the full premium of $134, because the increase in their Social Security benefit will be greater than or equal to an increase in their Part B premiums up to the full 2018 amount. About 28 percent of Part B enrollees are subject to the hold harmless provision in 2018 but will pay less than the full $134 premium. That’s because the increase in their Social Security benefit isn’t big enough to cover the full Part B premium increase. The remaining 30 percent of Part B enrollees aren’t subject to the hold harmless provision and will pay the full $134 per month in 2018. This group includes beneficiaries who don’t receive Social Security benefits; enroll in Part B for the first time in 2018; are directly billed for their Part B premium; are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid and have their premiums paid by state Medicaid agencies; and pay higher premiums because their incomes are higher. Since 2007, beneficiaries with higher incomes have paid higher Part B premiums. These higher premiums apply to about 5 percent of people with Part B. For a chart showing premiums at higher income levels, go to: https://www.cms.gov/Newsroom/MediaReleaseDatabase/Fact-sheets/2017-Fact-Sheet-items/2017-11-17.html The annual deductible for Part B will be $183 in 2018, the same amount as in 2017. Now let’s take a look at Medicare Part A, which covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing services and some home health services. About 99 percent of Medicare beneficiaries don’t pay any Part A premium since they’ve worked for at least 40 quarters in Medicare-covered jobs. The Part A deductible that beneficiaries pay when admitted to the hospital in 2018 will be $1,340 per benefit period, a rise of $24 from 2017. The Part A deductible covers beneficiaries’ share of costs for the first 60 days of Medicare-covered inpatient hospital care in a benefit period. Beneficiaries must pay a coinsurance amount of $335 per day for the 61st through 90th day of a hospitalization (versus $329 in 2017) in a benefit period, and $670 per day for lifetime reserve days ($658 in 2017). For beneficiaries in skilled nursing facilities, the daily coinsurance for days 21 through 100 of extended care services in a benefit period will be $167.50 in 2018 ($164.50 in 2017). You can find an explanation of benefit periods (and lots of other valuable information) in the “Medicare & You” handbook, at https://www.medicare.gov/medicare-and-you/ medicare-and-you.html.

Aging Today: Movement boosts the brain BY BOB ROTH

Managing Partner of Cypress Homecare Solutions

Do you ever do the “ostrich“ when you are presented with new information? Do you figuratively bury your head in the sand to avoid reading the article that challenges you to save for retirement or to exercise your way to better health? I get it. You can almost feel the judgment leaping from the page. As you try to grasp the new information, you are thinking, Those paragons of virtue will never know what it is like to be a mere mortal. Change is difficult and even more so when at the same time you are beating yourself up. Last October, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to behavioral economist Richard Thaler, whose lifetime research has acknowledged that most people make conscious decisions that are not in their own best interest. The media buzz surrounding Thaler was nothing short of serendipity for me, at a time I was trying to reconcile my feeling of frustration as I reviewed the research linking exercise with brain power. I wondered who would not exercise if they really knew how much better everything, especially their brains, would work. The studies have conclusively shown that to improve your thinking skills, you must move. For me personally and professionally, as I care for our aging community, I feel discouraged

that more people act as Thaler predicts. They act as humans and not as the rational, classical economist suggests. Classical economic theory supports the assumption that everyone would look to maximize utility (economist term for happiness) from good health over a sedentary lifestyle that is wrought with systemic diseases. To keep our bodies, especially our brains, at peak performance, how do we, as the behavioral economist suggests, nudge people in the right direction? Is it in fact safe to assume that collectively we got the memo about exercise and its effect on the brain? Exercise reduces your risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It reduces your risk for more than a dozen types of cancer. Deep down, we all know exercise buffers against the toxic effects of stress and improves the quality of sleep. But are we making the parallel with brain health? Are we aware that exercise is cognitive candy? When you meet those “super-agers” – the ones who seem about 20 years younger than their peers, what impresses you most? Researchers noticed that the people who are aging successfully also seem to be mentally alert. This led researchers to compare the cognitive abilities of someone in top physical condition to those in poor physical condition. Exercise has been associated with an astonishing elevation in cognitive performance compared with those who are sedentary. Test subjects scored better in just about every mental test: • Long-term memory tests • Reasoning tests • Tests that measured attention • Problem solving • Fluid intelligence (improvising off previously learned material) Imaging studies of the human brain have shown that exercising increases blood volume in the hippocampus, the region of the brain deeply involved in memory formation. On a molecular level, exercise stimulates the brain’s most powerful growth factor, BDNF, which stands for brain-derived neurotrophic factor. This protein is responsible for the formation of new neurons or brain cells and increases the connectivity of existing neurons. So the idea that once you reach your 20s you’re stuck with the brain cells you’ve got is a myth. So how much exercise do you have to do? That’s the crazy thing, as it turns out – not that much to see some benefits. Aerobic exercise for 30 minutes two times per week halves the risk of general dementia, and reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 60 percent. Truly, the best news is that the benefits of exercise are dose-dependent. The more you do, the greater the benefits you reap. The research of behavioral economists has influenced governments and business – from 401(k) contribution defaults to organ donation. With the knowledge that we don’t instinctively act in our own best interests, we need to nudge ourselves in the right direction, knowing that movement is the key to brain power. We cannot ignore the millions of years that shaped the human brain, and yet we stuff ourselves in classrooms and cubicles for eight hours

Brain...continued on page 31 www.LovinLifeAfter50.com

Brain...continued from page 30 at a time. Perhaps one day we will see boardrooms and classrooms with treadmills instead of desks. The human brain evolved under conditions of almost constant motion. Our prehistoric ancestors walked roughly 12 miles per day. Our unique cognitive skills were forged in the furnace of physical activity. We were not the strongest on the planet, but we developed the strongest brains – the key to our survival. Last year, after participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, it occurred to me that in addition to showing my support for the researchers, caregivers, families and patients of this devastating disease, I was also taking these very literal steps to decrease my own risk of cognitive decline.

Make Early Detection a Priority There are a number of screening exams available:

CT Calcium Scoring: Cross sectional images of the heart are obtained, then “scored” using special software to detect calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. Calcified plaque (atherosclerosis) is an indication of heart disease. Early diagnosis of heart disease can lead to interventions that could prevent serious cardiac events, such as a heart attack. CT Lung Screening: Cross-sectional images of the lungs are obtained using a special low dose technique to screen for various lung abnormalities such as lung nodules, emphysema, COPD, certain cancers, etc.

CT Virtual Colonoscopy: Cross-sectional images of the abdomen and pelvis are obtained after
