H&H Pizza takes wood-
fired pizza to the next level
BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON
H&H City Pizza can’t be lumped in with any other pizza place. It’s simply in a class by itself. Celebrating its first few months in business has been exhilarating. Customer feedback has been tremendous and this is just the beginning.
To understand how special H&H City Pizza is, one must understand the friendship behind the gourmet pizza. Chefs Marshall Reichert and Tyler Anderson have been friends and have worked together on and off at various high-end retail and hotel establishments for years. They share a solid friendship and common goals

Historic resort celebrates 100th anniversary with remodel

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON
Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, and invitees from throughout the Valley turned out to celebrate. The fete included the unveiling of propertywide renovations to help usher in the next 100 years.
The renovation was carefully planned so as to respect the history and relevance of the iconic Chandler resort, yet at the same time incorporating beautiful updates.
Victoria Schafer with WW Hospitality Marketing states, “They did a really good job of making it feel modern.”
The guest rooms have been

remodeled and updated to reflect a retro-modern flavor with heavy uses of white, greens and light earth tones that lend a clean, airy and sophisticated ambiance. Other areas of the hotel that have been remodeled and upgraded include the front lobby bar, the ballroom and restaurant. The outdoor patio also received a new, warm and inviting fire pit. The golf course is also slated to be redone in the summer.
Chandler city councilmembers and Mayor Jay Tibshraeny were also on hand for the evening’s festivities. Other guests included CEO and Chairman of Interwest Capital Alex Roudi, Chandler Museum

Administrator Jody Crago and the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort Director of Sales and Marketing Marquis Rust.
Throughout the evening, guests were treated to food, cocktails and a walking tour of the various renovated areas of the property. The resort upgrades took approximately eight months and the finishing touches were being placed right up until the centennial celebration. Much consideration went into the design and the physical considerations of the renovations.
“Remember, it’s 100 years old, so everything wasn’t quite so simple,” Schafer notes. But, the outcome promises to continue welcoming guests, dignitaries and Hollywood royalty, with a renewed sense of style.
Over the years, many notable personalities have gathered at San Marcos to enjoy golf, tennis, swimming and world-class service. Former guests include Fred Astaire, Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Mitzi Gaynor, George Gobel, William Powell, Jimmy Stewart, Gloria Swanson, Fred Waring and Cher. Other notables include President Herbert Hoover, Christian Dior, Gene Tunney and Margaret Sanger. Tibshraeny spoke briefly of the importance of the San Marcos to the city.
“It’s anchored the downtown area,” he says. “It holds a special place in our history and it’s a special part of our city.”
Crago continued about the somewhat bumpy history of the San Marcos, noting that the hotel was originally opened by Dr. A.J. Chandler but it was lost to

bankruptcy in 1936. It was even closed for several years in the early ‘80s before reopening in 1985. With the renovations, Crago notes, “We’re starting again as a great hotel.”
The Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort now boasts 249 renovated rooms and more than 35,000 square feet of meeting space to welcome a variety of guests and continue the story of the beloved Chandler resort. Crown Plaza Golf Resort is located at 1 San Marcos Pl., in Chandler, south of Chandler Boulevard. Visit www.sanmarcosresort.com or call 480-812-0900 for additional information.

such as a flare for unique culinary palate, a love of outstanding customer success and a hankering for success.
“We’ve had some great success already,” states Reichert, “We won Best Italian Food in the Taste Chandler competition just a few weeks ago, where we served our Tri-City Meat pizza.”
The Tri City Meat pizza features tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, Italian sausage and prosciutto and is one of the most popular pizzas at its Chandler retail establishment.
A visit to H&H City Pizza tells you that you are in for something special. The restaurant boasts a huge open kitchen with massive wood-burning pizza oven. “We get some customers because they’re driving through the parking lot and they see this huge oven and they want to stop in and see what we’re about,” says Anderson.
“We use Arizona pecan wood from Tucson in the oven,” notes Reichert. Reichert and Anderson find that pecan wood imparts a delicious flavor quality into their pizza.
“We buy local and support local,” Reichert states.
They buy as much fresh, local produce and supplies as possible because they want to support their surrounding community. One exception is the tomatoes, which are all imported from Italy. The taste difference the tomatoes make is clear and the two chefs are committed to giving all of

their pizzas unique flavor profiles. They also use only the highest quality cheeses, including the freshest mozzarella. Anderson states that kids come in and rave about the pizza simply because the cheese tastes so good.
One popular pizza is the California Club pizza with chipotle ranch, provolone, roasted chicken, avocado, oven-roasted tomatoes, bacon and arugula. The addition of the chipotle ranch and creamy avocado is not what you would normally expect to fi nd on a pizza, but it’s a delicious departure from a typical pizza.
Another unique creation is the Strawberry Fusion pizza with olive oil, goat cheese, pecans, onions, roasted chicken, strawberries and arugula.
“The flavors of our pizza really stand on their own,” Reichert adds.
Of course, customers are welcome to
build their own pizza, too. In keeping the menu easy, all pizzas are made personal size (12 inches).
Other menu items include a selection of small bites, ranging from a variety of chicken wings to antipasto, bruschetta and prosciutto carpaccio. They also have a good selection of salads and some delicious sandwiches including their signature grinder which has prosciutto, pepperoni, Italian sausage, mozzarella, onion, lettuce, tomato and white balsamic. Desserts include a wickedly delicious mini-cannoli, an apple purse, stuffed with apple cinnamon filling and a mascarpone cheesecake truffle that is rolled in a blanket of crushed gaufrette wafers. H&H City Pizza has a BYOB license, so guests can bring beer and wine (subject to a $1 per glass corking fee).
H&H City Pizza also offers delivery
and carryout.
“You just don’t see that service available for these types of gourmet pizzas and we’re happy to offer that,” states Anderson.
As the duo work to build an enthusiastic fan base, they are also planning for their future.
“Our ultimate goal is to open six more of these in the next five years,” states Reichert.
There are also two more cool surprises coming in the near future for both Reichert and Anderson. Their wives, Hayley and Heidi, respectively, are each expecting their fi rst child in mere months. As luck would have it,
each couple is expecting a boy. It is also a lovely sentiment that H&H City Pizza is appropriately named after each of their wives.
Reichert and Anderson are excited to be an important part of their surrounding community and work closely with local sports groups and schools. H&H Pizza is located at 4040 S. Arizona Ave., Suite 17 (at Ocotillo/ southwest corner). Call 480-659-8170 or visit www.hhcitypizza.com for additional information.

New training program begins in January at Center for Living Well
The Center for Living Well, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit wellness ministry providing Christ-centered wellness education and training, is offering teacher training in January.
The Center for Living Well’s Yoga Ministry Leadership Training Program is designed for individuals who want to strengthen their yoga knowledge and practice, deepen their understanding of the Bible, teach Christ-centered yoga classes or lead a yoga ministry.
Five modules will be used for the training. Each module, which focuses on different elements of Christ-centered yoga ministry leadership development, can be done independently or in succession.
The first module, “Foundations of Faith and Yoga,” will be held online from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 7 through 28, with instruction on introduction to the Bible; assimilating the word; yoga history, philosophy and theory, and breath work, mediation and prayer. Cost is $500 to take the first module and is required for those pursing a CCYL designation.
“Our program is unique in its approach to training in that we place equal emphasis on the fundamentals of yoga, Bible teaching, and leadership,” says Dawn Rutledge, executive director of The Center for Living Well. “All of our instructors receive extensive education and must demonstrate proficiency in yoga theory, yoga pose
construction and anatomy, class design and sequencing, teacher ethics and responsibilities, and student safety and enjoyment. In addition, our teachers receive teaching in Bible history, foundations of faith, and applied Bible study that fully equips them to read, understand, study, and teach Scripture. Further, our teachers also receive training in business, marketing, ministry, servant leadership and discipleship to equip them for leadership. When they graduate, they are fully equipped to teach classes, lead a Christ-centered yoga ministry in their church or community, or even open a yoga studio.”
The second module, “Pose Construction and Anatomy,” is a fourday yoga camp held from Feb. 5 through 9. The third module, “Class Design and Sequencing,” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays from March 4 through 25 for online training. Module four, “Business, Marketing and Ministry Leadership,” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays from April 1 through 22 for online training. The final module, “Teacher Practicum,” is a four-day yoga camp that will be held from June 4 through 8.
Each module includes 38 hours of instruction, personal practice and mandatory homework.
