SanTan Sun-area families are invited to celebrate the upcoming holiday season with First Baptist Church Chandler’s “Walk through Bethlehem” live nativity event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, through Sunday, Dec. 14.

Admission is free to the event, which begins with a live puppet show and also features crafts for children and free

cookies, hot chocolate and hot cider for everyone. Era-appropriate carolers, merchants and local village people, as well as a stable of live animals, will recreate the time of the birth of Jesus.

‘Theology on Tap’ back at VUU

The popular “Theology on Tap” series, led by Valley Unitarian Universalist’s the Rev. Andy Burnette, returns at 7 p.m. Tuesdays Nov. 4 and Nov. 11 in Ahwatukee.

Burnette will lead discussions on the three sermons that changed the course of Unitarianism in the 18th and 19th centuries at My Wine Cellar, 5030 E. Warner Rd., Phoenix. RSVP by emailing Burnette at revandy@vuu.org, with “Theology on Tap” in the subject line.

VUU provides a welcoming, diverse community that nurtures each person’s lifelong spiritual journey, creates a place of peace and celebration and strives for social justice and sustainable living. To learn more, call (480) 899-4249 or visit www.vuu.org.

‘Rock Shabbat,’ potluck under open sky

Rock Shabbat Under the Stars begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Temple Emanuel of Tempe, 5801 S. Rural Rd., Tempe, with students from the Temple’s religious school adding their voices to the seven-piece Shabba-Tones band. A potluck dinner hosted by the religious school families will precede the service.

Rock Shabbat is held on the first Friday of each month at Temple Emanuel of Tempe. Cantorial soloist Emily Kaye leads the Shabba-Tones through contemporary, rocking musical settings of prayers and meditations for the Sabbath. Based on traditional Kabbalat Shabbat services that welcome the Sabbath with song, Rock Shabbat infuses the prayers and other songs with a dynamic, modern, spiritual and musical energy, capped with dancing in honor of the Torah.
