Chandler Center for the Arts brings the best in arts culture
The performing arts season is back. Time to get out and celebrate all that is creative. The Chandler Center for the Arts has a national and even international lineup waiting for you, as it presents a circus from Italy, ballet companies from Russia, tenors from Texas and Shakespeare from Utah.
CCA General Manager Michelle Mac Lennan said the season boasts artists from France, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Mexico and Quebec—not to mention the East Valley.
“We will feature new artist collaborations, award winners, virtuosic performers and stars of comedy and stage,” Mac Lennan said.
in the province of Quebec. Its founding members have all worked with some of the most renowned ‘nouveau cirque’ companies around the world.”
At the opposite end of circus sensibility is the 173-year-old Zoppé Family Circus, from Italy, on the CCA grounds Dec. 22 and perform through Jan. 3.
Is the focus on international acts a deliberate change for CCA?
“It is a conscious new turn. We have yet to identify it as a targeted niche market, but depending on how it goes, I see us expanding it more,” Mac Lennan said.
“I recommend seeing something you have never seen before, such as Cirque Alfonse (Jan. 17). This is a young circus company from Saint-Alfonse Rodriquez
Anchored by six free concerts of the Chandler Symphony Orchestra, the 2015-16 season at CCA also features a raft of classic pop acts including ‘60s urban soul pioneers Tower of Power (Nov. 7), ‘60s crooner Frankie Avalon (Feb. 20), and the Grammy Awardwinning vocal quartet The Manhattan Transfer (Feb. 14).
In collaboration with Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, CCA will present “Plugged In” Sept. 12, a showcase of the best bands and soloists of the youth music school.
Three Russian dance troupes will appear. The Russian Grand Ballet will perform “Swan Lake” Oct. 2; National Dance Company of Siberia presents modern dance Nov. 15; and Moscow Festival Ballet stages “Don Quixote” Jan. 29.
East Valley dance company Ballet Etudes will produce its 29th annual “Nutcracker” from Nov. 27 to Dec. 6, and Chandler’s 16th annual Mariachi Festival, highlighting the vibrant music and dances of Mexico, is scheduled for Oct. 3. March will be rich in theater, when the Utah Shakespeare Festival presents “Hamlet” (March 4), followed by “Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding,” March 8 through March 13.
A range of vocal stylings will include the world-music sounds of Gaelic Storm (Nov. 20) and the unlikely crossover of country-and-classical ensemble The Texas Tenors (Dec. 18).

Studio welcomes Adams Theatre Artists Studio presents award-winning ‘Crimes of the Heart’
Internationally known artist, David Emitt Adams, will make a tintype portrait during a special portrait session event at Art Intersection. Individuals can sit for a unique, handcrafted portrait, made using the historic tintype process originally invented in the 1850s.
A session lasts between 30 to 45 minutes and individuals take away a fresh tintype portrait that will make a perfect keepsake or gift. The tintype image is captured on a 4 inch by 5 inch aluminum plate. Allow an additional 30-minutes after the session for the plate to dry, or individuals can pick it up the next business day.
The session price includes only one tintype and does not include retakes unless there are clear issues with the image. Retakes are done at the discretion of the photographer. They can easily photograph one to two people and may be able to add a third person maximum. The exposure time may be as long as 5-seconds, so the subjects must be able to hold a pose, without moving for the exposure duration. No pets.
Since tintypes are unique and cannot be produced, if individuals want two tintype portraits for the same session, another plate may be purchased for an additional $45. A high resolution scan of the portrait for $25 can be emailed to an individual. Individuals can pay for the options when they arrive for their scheduled session.

Beth Henley’s hysterical and touching exploration of the foibles and challenges of the three wacky Magrath sisters comes to the Theatre Artists Studio in the first production of the season.
Set in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, the Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of their grandfather, who is living out his final hours in the local hospital. The story centers around Lenny, Meg, and Babe, who are all dealing with the ghosts of their family’s notorious past. Throw in their nosy cousin, Chick, and two sexy men – Meg’s former lover, Doc, and the young lawyer Barnette Lloyd, who has been tasked with helping Babe beat an attempted murder wrap. Their troubles are both grave and laughable as, together, they try to escape the past and seize their future. It’s a touching and consistently hilarious story that will linger in the mind long after the lights fade to black.
some of the humor is dark, the overall message of the piece is the power of family, hope, and humor to overcome even the worst possible situations. I am completely in love with each of the six characters – in all their quirkiness – and this cast is as close to perfect in their roles as you can get. I am very excited to share this wonderful story with The Studio’s audience.” Theatre Artists
