Auto shop certified by consumer group

Chandler Auto Body, 1505 N. Arizona Ave., is now part of the advanced repair network of Certified Collision Care Providers.

Shops that receive the certification include collision repair businesses that pass a rigorous inspection and evaluation process to help ensure a proper and safe repair of the new generation of advanced vehicles.

Between 2013 and 2016, more than 240 automotive brands are being redesigned or reintroduced using advanced materials and technology, making this new generation of vehicles both lighter and safer. Hand in hand with the new vehicle designs comes the challenge for consumers to identify which collision repairers have the technical capability to properly and safely repair vehicles.

Assured Performance Collision Care, a nonprofit consumer advocacy

organization, is working with automakers such as Ford, FCA, Hyundai and GM to assist consumers by certifying body shops that maintain the right tools, equipment, training, and facility modification to repair the participating automaker brand vehicles back to the manufacturer’s specifications. These shops are also officially recognized by the automakers and carry special credentials. These shops are listed on consumer-facing shop locator websites and in new smart apps. Collision Care is distinguished from the experience and service provided by body shops of yesteryear through the advanced collision repair capability and service experience delivered by the best in class shops receiving certification. Less than 5 percent of body shops across the nation are able to meet these stringent requirements.

New technology

Bashas’ has teamed up with the Ibotta smartphone app that allows shoppers to earn cash back on their in-store purchases when they answer a couple of short survey questions on their phone. Bashas’ has also equipped all of its store directors with iPads.

“We’re always looking for ways to help our customers save money when they grocery shop,” said Edward “Trey” Basha, president and CEO of Bashas’. “With a few clicks on a smartphone, customers now have a way to instantly earn coupons while they’re shopping.”

With the iPads, store directors view video mystery shops of their teams in action, train team members working on

the sales floor about how to improve their customer service, and make sure their stores are meeting or exceeding industry and food safety compliance standards.

“The iPads are beneficial, because our store team members can be anywhere on the store floor and access the information they want, right when they need it,” Basha said.

In addition, the family-owned grocer is testing new technology in 40 of its Bashas’ and Food City stores that helps customers make decisions about what products to purchase.

“Like Machines” are placed near specific products so shoppers can share their opinions with other shoppers by pushing the “Like” button when they see a product they enjoy. In turn, shoppers can see the number of endorsements a product has received, which can help to influence their

decision to purchase the product. It also helps the grocer to determine product preferences in different neighborhoods throughout the state. So far, more than 500,000 endorsements have been made in the pilot stores.

“The decision to test the ‘Like Machines’ in our Bashas’ and Food City stores was an easy one,” said Basha. “We continually strive to improve our customers’ shopping experience, and this technology is another way to do that.”

With more than 100 grocery stores, Bashas’ is one of the largest employers in the state and one of the Best Places to Work in Arizona. Since the company’s inception in 1932, Bashas’ has given back more than $100 million to the communities it serves. For more information, visit www.bashas.com.

Arizona earns a B- for small business friendliness in survey

Small business owners gave Arizona a B- for its business friendliness, with relatively positive perceptions of its regulatory environment, according to Thumbtack’s annual Small Business Friendliness Survey.

Nearly 18,000 U.S. small business owners responded to the survey, including 597 in Arizona. The study asked respondents to rate their state and city governments across a broad range of policy factors. Thumbtack.com then evaluated states and cities against one another along more than a dozen metrics.

“Small business owners on Thumbtack have consistently told us that they welcome support from their governments, but are frequently frustrated by unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles,” said Jon Lieber, chief Thumbtack economist. “Arizona’s regulatory climate is better than in its

neighboring states of California and New Mexico, but it is still playing catchup with friendlier states like Colorado and Utah.”

Arizona’s best scores were a B+ grade for its zoning regulations, which helped contribute to its B grade for regulations as a whole. Phoenix earned a B- grade for overall friendliness and Tucson earned a C grade for overall friendliness. Arizona’s worst score was a C- for training and networking programs.

Thumbtack evaluated states and cities against one another along more than a dozen metrics. Respondents to the survey were mostly small service businesses with five or fewer employees. Every state in the country was represented, although only states with more than 50 responses and cities with more than 30 responses were given a grade.

Valley dentist uses Cancer Awareness Month to help kids

During the month of September, patients at Dr. J. Philipp’s dental office can help to make a child’s dream come true while also protecting their own health.

In honor of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Philipp is donating 25 percent from every fluoride treatment to the Make-AWish Foundation, a nonprofit started in Phoenix in 1980 that has granted nearly 5,000 wishes to children with lifethreatening medical conditions.

recommends fluoride treatments every six months. At the dental office, for $29, patients receive a fluoride varnish treatment, a procedure that involves “painting” the teeth with varnish that stays on for 24 hours—even through eating and drinking. Benefits include cavity prevention thanks to stronger enamel and more resistance to bacteria, staining prevention within the tooth and not the surface, and less sensitivity due to stronger enamel.

According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 16,000 children and teens will be diagnosed with cancer this year and nearly 2,000 will die.

Free lunch and learn seminar about hearing loss on Oct. 30

time for questions and direct answers from the doctors.

The seminar, including lunch, will be held in the Lecky Center at the Ed Robson

September is Emergency Preparedness Month

Every household should have a supply kit of essential items

Natural disasters or widespread emergencies are rare in Arizona, but they do happen. Whether it is a major power outage during a summer heat wave, or torrential rains flooding neighborhoods, emergencies can happen at any time, anywhere. Are you prepared?

This is National Emergency Preparedness Month, and the Chandler Fire, Health & Medical Department encourages residents in every household to prepare an emergency kit that is equipped with enough supplies to provide for your family’s basic needs for at least 72 hours. Because, in a large scale disaster, many of the services and resources you rely on every day may be impacted, and self-reliance will be necessary. The emergency kit should contain items that will help the family in the event of a power outage, suspension of water service and

the inability to access supermarkets or other local services. It also is recommended that you keep a small emergency kit in every vehicle.

Visit chandleraz.gov/fire for additional information and tools to help you prepare your family. Another great resource is the federal emergency preparedness website ready.gov.

Recommended items for your emergency kit:

✔ Water (at least one gallon per person, per day)

✔ Non-perishable food

✔ Manual can opener

✔ Garbage bags and toiletries

✔ First aid kit

✔ Flashlights and extra batteries

✔ Crank generator

✔ Cell phone charger

✔ Basic tool kit

✔ Copies of insurance policies, ID, and

bank documents in a waterproof container

✔ List of important phone numbers

✔ Extra change of clothes and blankets

✔ Prescription medication, reading glasses, contact lenses and solution

✔ Infant formula and diapers

✔ Pet supplies (including medications) and food

✔ Cash

Finally, remember to check your Emergency Supply Kit and update its contents at least once a year.

Are

Free training for residents on how to help in a disaster or emergency situation

When disaster strikes, first responders who provide fire and medical services may not be able to meet the critical demand for these services. With limited emergency resources, people will have to rely on each other for help.

assistance during any emergency until professional services arrive. Chandler CERT is offering free training the first three Saturdays in October, taught by Chandler firefighters who will teach you how to prepare and secure your home and family in an emergency or disaster, and how to help your community by providing assistance until first responders arrive. Call 480-782-2116 or email certadmin@chandleraz.gov to reserve your spot in the CERT Basic Class.

Pedestrian-friendly retail center coming to Gilbert and Ocotillo

Construction has begun on a pedestrian-friendly retail center dubbed The Plant that will be anchored by Sprouts Farmers Market. Spanning roughly 8 acres on the southeast corner of Gilbert and Ocotillo roads, The Plant will also feature a mixture of retail and restaurant tenants.

“With Sprouts as our anchor tenant, it helps set the tone for the center as a neighborhood marketplace where you can pick up groceries, grab a coffee, have lunch, shop” said developer Brian Frakes, principal, of Common Bond.

“We’re currently in the process of finalizing leases with several notable tenants that will add great value to the center. Once the buildings begin to go vertical we’ll fill our remaining spaces with additional popular tenants that benefit the community.”

Common Bond along with local architects SUITE 6 Architecture + Planning and Cawley Architects, landscape architect GK Flanagan Associates and contractor GCON are working together to open The Plant by late summer 2016.

The Plant will have attractive pathways highlighted by seat walls, unique planting and shade trees, according to Frakes. Surrounding shops will have farmhouseinspired chevron roofs and open-air arcades along the fronts with wood, brick and metal accents.

Frakes said Chandler was chosen

Including land acquisition, the cost of the land is approximately $15 million.

“We’re going above and beyond with the design and architecture of the space,” Frakes said.
