Tourney helps ease abused children’s pain BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Sean Reavie is continuing his mission to help ease the pain of abused children. He’s raising money to do so with his third Superhero Golf Scramble, presented by Dr. Bill Elrey and NeXus Rehab + Spine, on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix. “The first year, we sold out everything,” said Reavie, a North Phoenix resident. “We did fantastic. Numbers. Last year, we all got ‘2020’d.’ We had to cut the field in half. We still sold out, but we didn’t get near the sponsors we had. We still did it, though. “To me, it was important to keep the

continuity going. This year, we’re back to a full field. We sold as many tickets as last year’s amount. The sponsorship is through the roof. People are excited to come out and play.” The tourney benefits Reavie’s Glendale-based nonprofit, Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope. In October, he disburses the funds to advocacy centers throughout the Valley. In two years, he’s raised more than $40,000 to comfort and empower abused children seeking help in greater Phoenix child advocacy centers. “The Southwest Family Advocacy Center will have tables at the event to hand out information to the golfers, as nearly all are parents,” Reavie said. BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Glendale officials and the Arizona Cardinals are collaborating with Plaza Companies to plan an innovative and vibrant mixed-use project that is expected to spur economic development for the city and the region. The 62-acre site is east of Loop 101, south of State Farm Stadium and to the east of the new Crystal Lagoons Island Resort development. It includes a parcel of land in the northwest portion of the property owned by an affiliate of the Arizona Cardinals. The remainder of the site is owned by the city of Glendale.

Upon completion, the vision for this high-energy, mixed-use environment could include up to 600,000 square feet of Class A office development, more than 60,000 square feet of quality retail amenities, restaurant and entertainment space, hotels, and approximately 230 units of multifamily residential. The site will be master planned to provide event parking for State Farm Stadium and the Crystal Lagoons Island Resort, while creating a vibrant fan experience. Peoria-based Plaza Companies has developed high-profile mixed-use developments in the Valley. This project will be

modeled after the success the company created with SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center, and the revitalized Park Central in Midtown Phoenix. “We are looking forward to creating a significant economic engine for the West Valley that will add to the substantial private investment pouring into the growing sports and entertainment district that includes State Farm Stadium, Gila River Arena, Westgate Entertainment District the Crystal Lagoons Island Resort development, and the many other amenities in the area,” said Sharon Harper, chairperson SEE PROJECT PAGE 3

and CEO of Plaza Companies. “We know from experience that a strong public-private partnership can lead to transformative economic impact, and we look forward to bringing an innovative development approach to this project.” The team will collaborate on creating a vision for a strong regionwide identity using art, landscape and shade, and exciting overall connectivity between State Farm Stadium and throughout the project. The project could incorporate a pedestrian-oriented, walkable environment highlighted by tree-lined shaded sidewalks that parallel vehicular spines winding through the development. The walkways will be enhanced with pedestrian nodes and landscaped plaza spaces that encourage interaction and are appointed with public art, accent lighting, and a featured outdoor plaza to link to the pedestrian underpass to the stadium to the north. “This exciting partnership, with a true industry leader in Plaza Companies, will create new employment opportunities for the community, draw major businesses and commerce to the region as it provides further cultural enhancements for this already thriving area of the city,” Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps said. “We look forward to working with Plaza Companies on this project as we create a dynamic live, work, experience here in Glendale that is unrivaled in the region while it continues to expand and blossom as a major economic engine.” The new partnership follows the recent groundbreaking of the Crystal Lagoons Island Resort and the announcement of a new Mattel amusement park as part of this major mixed-use development. It also comes at a time when the eyes of the world will soon be on Glendale again, as State Farm Stadium will host its third Super Bowl in 2023 and the

NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four for a second time in 2024. Opened in 2006, State Farm Stadium has resulted in an economic impact exceeding $5 billion. The biggest single piece of that came in 2015 when the Seidman Research Institute, W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University determined that Super Bowl XLIX, the 2015 Pro Bowl and related events produced a gross economic im-

pact of $719.4 million for the region, the largest of any special event in Arizona. “The Arizona Cardinals look forward to collaborating with Plaza Companies and the city of Glendale to create a distinctive mixed-use business center that attracts companies, creates great jobs and enhances exceptional regional amenities,” said Michael Bidwill, owner of the Arizona Cardinals.

tress who plays Wonder Woman. “I handed her my card and said she’d be the perfect Wonder Woman for one of my events,” he said. “Six hours later, I received an email from her mother. She said, ‘You met my daughter today. I work for the Glendale chief of police. You guys are legendary. I’m so proud that you would think my daughter would do something with you.’ “Back to the tournament, it’s going to be phenomenal. We have half the field to fill. Come have a blast with us.”

Superhero friends

Put on the Cape started in 2015, when he eyed a classic Batman poster and thought he should use posters and comic books to ease the fears of the kids he met as a child crimes detective. He soon found out it worked. Reavie was speaking to an abused child and, on a whim, he asked him about superheroes. The child’s demeanor changed and the two discussed “Avengers” and his love of Iron Man. Reavie soon made the connection between superheroes and adversity. Spider-Man lost Uncle Ben and was bullied and an orphan. Batman saw his parents die, and Iron Man had shrapnel in the chest. “I’m a comic book nerd from a small town with 2,000 people,” said Reavie, a Michigan native. “I kept myself believing in the hope of superhero mythology because it did so much for me when I was bullied constantly. “Hope is stronger than fear, and to see the look in the eyes of a little boy or girl when they see their heroes come to life is remarkable. The change is so electric, everyone gets chills.” Reavie uses superhero conversations and analogies to empower victims who end up at the centers. After a handful of successful fundraisers, Reavie was granted nonprofit status for Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope in 2019. Reavie recently opened a chapter in Houghton Lake, Michigan. “We’re doing a 5K and a Superhero fun run with kids during the halftime of the homecoming game in Houghton Lake,” he said. “We’re in negotiations to go into five other states at the end of the year.”

Raising funds

The golf tournament is Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope’s signature fundraiser. Bang energy drink and the Hooters team will hand out goodies to the 144 golfers. “A big part of what our foundation does is empower, encourage and educate,” he said. “This is the top fundraiser for the foundation, and it makes me so happy to see such an outpouring of support. We are raffling foursomes at the Legacy, The Raven and Talking Stick.” Awards will be given to champion

golfers as well as second- and thirdplace teams. The Superman Long Drive Award is up for grabs on the men’s side, and the ladies vie for the Wonder Woman Long Drive Award. “People don’t even have to golf that well,” Reavie said. The event is a scramble, which means four players contribute to the score, rather than one individual. “Three guys can shank it into the woods,” he said. “The next guy can hit it onto the fairway, and it’s great. “We just want people to embrace these centers all around the Valley. People don’t know what goes on there. Their locations are secret. You don’t want people to find the children who were taken there because they were abused.

“These centers do not have a budget for action figures or T-shirts or even diapers and clothing. That’s why we’ve branched out.” A school resource officer now, Reavie finds his volunteer mission humbling. “I’m just a comic book nerd who had an idea that resonated with so many people,” Reavie said. “Another child crimes detective came up to me and was talking in a high voice. He said, ‘I can’t believe I’m meeting you. You’re doing everything we all wish we could.’ “We only have them for this small window. They tell us the worst story and then we never see them again. This is something I can do to improve everyone’s lives.” He’s adding child advocacy centers as he goes. The nice thing about that? “People have heard of me,” he said. “I don’t have to go through the elevator speech. They usually say, ‘Oh, my gosh. We’ve seen you on TV. We’ve heard about your events.” Another time, he stopped by FX Tactical in Peoria to pick up uniforms. The woman behind the counter, he said, looked like a young Gal Gadot, the ac-

Girl Scout troop gives back to Smith school BY ALLISON BROWN

Glendale Star Staff Writer

Local Girl Scout Troop 6128 gave Harold W. Smith Elementary School’s staff lounge a fresh, “zen” look for a service project and as a thank-you for teachers’ work during the pandemic. Tarrah Bernabe, the troop leader and principal for this project, said that while she didn’t influence them, she was glad they chose her school. She was impressed with the leadership and problem-solving skills the girls displayed. “It was really their project. They’re the ones who developed the idea,” Bernabe said. “They basically only needed myself and our co-leader to drive them to places, because they’re in sixth and seventh grade. They did the painting, the arranging, made all the decisions, kept track of the money, spoke to the managers at the stores and wrote the emails. I just copied and pasted the emails. They did all that with our help, of course, just with things that adults are needed to do, but as an educator, seeing children take the lead, solve a problem and do such a beautiful job was inspiring.” Ella Manchie, a troop member and seventh grader at Garden Lakes Elementary School, said they needed 60 hours of community service to earn

their Silver Award. The girls were asked to think about problems in the community that they could contribute a sustainable solution to and landed on the topic of the stress of COVID-19 not just on students but on teachers. “We realized that teachers didn’t really have the greatest year with COVID, so we decided we wanted to do something nice for the new school year,” Manchie said. “We chose Ms. Tarrah’s (school) because we could do it with her and because their teacher lounge was a little bit sad.” The troops designed their own Google survey, with each member picking a question to ask, and sent it out to teachers. The overwhelming response was that teachers wanted more stocking and a “zen” or “spa” space, and that’s what the girl scouts gave them. One of the first things they did was a massive reorganization of the supply closet, printer room and teacher work room. “We felt that before, all the papers and everything in the workroom was crammed in random places. There was a whole drawer filled with one pen. So, we decided to do that because we figured it might be nice,” Manchie said. “The supply closet was somewhat organized, but we wanted to make SEE GIRL SCOUTS PAGE 7

it more than it was at the time. Then we sorted out all the supplies that the teachers asked for and delivered them to each classroom.” To give teachers that relaxing “zen” space, the girls pooled their resources and reached out to the community. They called businesses and received donations of around $400 worth of supplies from Lowe’s and spray cans from ACE Hardware. The troops were charged with speaking to the business owners as well as collecting and handling the money. They thrifted furniture items, upcycled the existing furniture, repainted and added greenery to make the space more inviting and relaxing. “They put everything together. They did some painting. They rearranged the furniture and the items that were in there,” Bernabe said. “Then they also created some things from scratch. One of the most memorable things that the teachers have commented on is the customized artwork that’s in the lounge. Each of the girls had their own canvas and they created a piece of art-

work, and those are hung throughout the room.” While the Girl Scouts couldn’t be present for the big reveal, Manchie said they received letters from the teachers thanking them for their work and saying that “they loved it.” She said it also felt rewarding for them to see their changes, and they were all happy with the outcome. The troops put in over 60 hours of work, and all received their Silver Cadet badge. As for Bernabe, she is a happy principal and proud troop leader. “This lounge has been a beautiful escape for (teachers) to come together and build community with one another. Being a teacher is hard. Working in education is hard work. It’s nice to be able to have a place where we can go to giggle or we can just sit down and breathe and have a few minutes in a room that was designed just for us to recharge. When I asked the girls why this was important, they said, ‘Because when teachers feel good, they’re nice to kids,’ and that’s well said. When teachers feel good, they’re a better version of themselves for the kids.”

Police investigating fatal car crash on Camelback

August 19, 2021

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Glendale Star Executive Editor

A 44-year-old Phoenix man has been charged with DUI in connection with a 10:30 p.m. Aug. 12 car crash that killed two on the 5800 block of West Camelback Road in Glendale. Bushiri Kibukila was arrested, and the investigation continues, according to Glendale police. Killed in the crash was 54-year-old Sharri Wood of Phoenix. Sandra Kay Williams, 72, of Glendale died at a local hospital. Glendale police said Williams was driving a sedan in which Wood was riding. Investigators determined Williams, while attempting to turn left into a private drive, collided with Kibukila’s SUV as it was traveling west on Camelback Road, approaching 59th Avenue. Kibukila remained on the scene.

‘Biggy Rat’ departs the political rat race BY J.D. HAYWORTH

Glendale Star Columnist

Newton H. Minow, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under John F. Kennedy, denounced television as a “vast wasteland” in 1961. But at that same time, the nation’s children viewed the flickering images inside the electronic box as a “vast wonderland” — especially on Saturday mornings. With parents and children freed from the routines of work and school for the weekend, mom and dad would sleep in, while the kids would pour bowls of sugar-infused breakfast cereal and plant themselves in front of the television for the morning’s animated fare. Comedy, action and even morality play came into the nation’s homes, courtesy of cartoons. It didn’t take long for the kids to distinguish the “good guys” and “bad guys,” as the contrast was as stark as the black and white in which it was televised. One dastardly duo of that era’s animation — Biggy Rat and Itchy Brother — came roaring back into the collective consciousness of baby boomers last year in the real-life personas of Andrew and Chris Cuomo. The governor of New York and his younger sibling, a hectoring, lecturing cable news host, were ushered into American homes on a regular basis with repartee that the low-IQ brain trust at CNN apparently regarded as the epitome of “infotainment.” As they basked in their self-imagined, refracted fraternal glory, it became apparent within a nanosecond that the Cuomo brothers would never be confused with the Smothers Brothers, though Chris and Andrew did their own variation of the “mom always liked you best” routine. It was also painfully obvious that neither Cuomo boy grew into

the man their father was. In the age of Reagan, Gov. Mario Cuomo emerged as the “Great Democrat Hope,” especially following his keynote address at the 1984 San Francisco Convention. No less a Republican than Richard Nixon praised the elder Cuomo’s speech for its eloquence and effectiveness. But New York’s first Gov. Cuomo earned the unflattering nickname “Hamlet on the Hudson” for his indecisiveness and ultimate refusal to run for president. In late December 1991, a chartered plane was poised to fly him to New Hampshire 90 minutes prior to that state closing filing for its first in the nation presidential primary in February 1992. Mario Cuomo said no; another Democrat governor, Bill Clinton of Arkansas, became the 42nd president of the United States. The second Gov. Cuomo was ultimately discovered to possess hungers and habits that can only be described as “Clintonesque.” But prior to those revelations, Andrew found another vehicle to raise his profile. Like so many other Democrats in 2020, he decided to politicize the pandemic; but unlike the rest of his leftist cohorts, he took a page out of his younger brother’s career handbook — daily television. By making his “Live from Albany” daily telecasts available to CNN and every other conceivable video outlet, Andrew Cuomo was able to feast on the political equivalent of Manna — free media. It was a political masterstroke. Given the constant demand for COVID-19 news, and the media’s decided leftist tilt, Gov. Andrew Cuomo filled the vacuum and earned predictable plaudits. Reporter Shannon Fish-

PETERS’ OPINION – Dayton Daily News

er’s account from April 2020 is typical of the praise-filled prose: “The novel coronavirus pandemic thrust him into a white-hot spotlight. A challenge like that can really test a leader’s mettle, and Cuomo’s pragmatic, empathetic leadership … earned high marks.” It also earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for his TV performances and over $5 million for his book, titled “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic.” The aforementioned “white-hot spotlight” and the partisan predilections of most in the press corps combined to slow scrutiny of the failures of Gov. Cuomo’s leadership. But eventually they were exposed. No less a progressive publication than the New York Times proved it wasn’t fooling around on April Fool’s Day of this year, when it reported that the governor’s staff lowered the number of COVID-19 nursing home fatalities appearing in a July 2020 report from 9,844 to 6,432. The practice of treating elderly patients with COVID-19 in hospital and then prematurely readmitting them to rest homes put other seniors at risk and undoubtedly led to additional deaths. Strange, then, that the nursing home scandal did not prompt Andrew Cuo-

mo’s resignation as governor. Instead, subsequent charges of sexual harassment proved the catalyst that forced the “Luv Guv” to call it quits. Why? Curious observers would do well to remember the political environment that exists in today’s Democratic Party. There are allegations of similar nursing home fatalities in Pennsylvania and Michigan, and both those states hold gubernatorial elections next year. Had Cuomo departed Albany because of the nursing home scandal, Tom Wolf and Gretchen Whitmer could have faced a similar fate in Harrisburg and Lansing, respectively. Instead, New York’s female lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, becomes the Empire State’s first female governor, giving NY Dems the chance to “turn the page” prior to their own 2022 gubernatorial election. What’s next for Andrew Cuomo? It would seem a “vast wasteland.” While some predict a political comeback, it would be wise for him to wait until 2032… the Year of the Rat. J.D. Hayworth worked as a sportscaster at Channel 10, Phoenix, from 1987 until 1994 and represented Arizona in Congress from 19952007.

The Olympics were quirky fun this summer BY JUDY BLUHM

Glendale Star Columnist

Oh, those Olympics. Inspiring, incredible, heartbreaking, fun and heartwarming. No other sporting event on Earth can produce so many plots, twists, turns and moments to enjoy and ponder as the summer games. The athletes pushed their bodies to try and capture bronze, silver or gold, leaving us “ordinary” folks to ask, “How did they do that?” Many pundits focused harshly on Simone Biles or liked to use the term “woke” when an athlete or team struggled to perform to the usual “gold standard.” Hey, have you done a backflip lately? Hmm, didn’t think so. I did a handstand once many years ago, and it didn’t end well. Let’s leave flippant remarks to those who can flip (in the air). Oh, that devil of a horse name Saint Boy really messed up the gold medal dreams of the German rider Annika Schleu. Schleu was first in points to medal in the modern pentathlon until she mounted the uncooperative “saint.” This is a sport that includes equestrian show jumping, fencing, swimming, cross-country running and laser pistol shooting. Riders must use horses they have not trained or bonded with prior to the competition. Well, Saint Boy reminded me of my old horse Baxter, a very handsome gelding who would do anything you asked and go anywhere you wanted him to go. Unless he had other plans. Those other plans often meant standing, grazing, walking slowly, or simply refusing to follow the simplest commands. Saint Baxter is what I should have called him. But when a coach punched Saint Boy in the rear end, it didn’t help matters. Schleu cried her way to finish last on a horse that just wasn’t going to jump. Several other horses in the event acted less than saintly, bucking or throwing their riders off in a stunning show of bad manners. Do you need a nice winter wool sweater? How about having Great Britain’s

gold medalist diver, Tom Daley, knit you a little something? While Daley was in between dives, he could be seen knitting away. Evidently, it gets boring waiting poolside, so knitting has become a therapeutic way for the champion to “relax and unwind.” His true “masterpiece” is the little pouch he made to keep his gold medal. He left the competitors in stitches. Some of the weird images of the Tokyo Olympics included a six-legged runner. Yes, a cockroach was given “moments of stardom” when a cameraman decided to focus his lens on a cockroach during the final minutes of the Spain-Argentina women’s field hockey match. Geez, Mr. Cameraman, you have one job! This is the Olympics! Why must you shoot an insect making its way along a ledge at the side of the stadium? One announcer from Spain screamed “la cucaracha!” in disbelief. There were some unsettling things that happened in Tokyo. We couldn’t escape controversy. But there were also records that were smashed and a feast of sporting events that thrilled. We had the chance to observe greatness. Our athletes were on fire. And for a few weeks, we could bask in their glory. Yea for Team USA! Judy Bluhm is a writer and a local Realtor. Have a comment or a story? Email her at judy@judybluhm.com.

Cox YurView AZ slates high school football special BY ZACH ALVIRA

Glendale Star Sports Editor

Cox YurView AZ is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first televised Arizona high school football game on its network this year with a 22-minute documentary detailing the last four decades of the sport. “40 Years of Arizona High School Football” features legendary coaches and teams, including Mountain View, McClintock, Saguaro, Chandler, St. Mary’s, Brophy, Centennial and many more. Rich Reid, who has produced high school football games for Cox since he was hired in 1998, lent a helping hand in the documentary.

He said they wanted to show how the sport has evolved and to honor the vision George Allen had when he came up with the idea to broadcast Friday night football games alongside current Arizona Diamondbacks radio play-byplay announcer Greg Schulte. “With the show, we really wanted to show the viewers how high school football has evolved and developed,” Reid said. “It was George’s idea to broadcast high school football. He passed away in 2015 and, in my opinion, he never really got the credit he deserves for escalating high school sports here in Arizona. “This is a way for us to show that appreciation to his family and give George his props. Demers Glass reflects founder’s work ethic ADVERTORIAL

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Glendale Star Executive Editor

Demers Glass is not the typical glass company. Owner Pierre Demers said the staff cares about their work and their customers. “We’ve had to fix a lot of work that other companies have done,” Demers said. “If it’s something we would have done in the same fashion, we would be getting sued by now.” With offices in Peoria, Lakeside and Flagstaff, Demers Glass performs services such as custom-engineered curtain wall and window wall, architectural windows, storefront systems, doors, skylights, residential windows and doors, glass replacements, retractable screen doors, solar screens, security/storm doors, window tinting, solar powered awnings, architectural glass, custom laminated glass, cast/slump glass, mirrors, shower doors, privacy glass, tabletops, custom all-glass ta-

bles, all-glass entrances and handrails. Founded in 1977, the family business began as a small glass shop in Phoenix. Since then, it has become well known among architectural firms and general contractors for its talented staff. “We were living in New Hampshire and my dad picked up the whole family and headed to Arizona because he was tired of working for somebody else,” Demers said. “He wanted to do something on his own. He started Demers Glass, and all five of us kids have been involved at one time. We three brothers bought out our two sisters, and then we bought out our dad in 2003.” One aspect has been consistent since the early days: The staff thoroughly explains their intention. “Not everybody has the mentality of our trade,” Demers said. “If there’s something wrong with the glass, we try to fix it for the customer before a fullon replacement. They understand what

they’re getting. There are no surprises once the work is complete with Demers Glass.”

Chamber teams with Sky Harbor for discounts BY TYLER WEGLEITNER Glendale Star Staff Writer

The Glendale Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to provide parking benefits to businesses that are members of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. Members will get a 15% discount on “online rates” at five parking locations at the airport. These locations are the West Economy Garage, parking at terminals 3 and 4, the East Economy Lot and garages A and B. Valet services are expected to be available soon. There is also a special that is valid through Sept. 1, in which these businesses and their employees will instead get 25% off, in addition to “2,000 loyalty points for new sign-ups.” The parking lots are “ADA-accessible, safe, well-lit and patrolled regularly.” For more information, visit

glendaleazchamber.org and click on “cost-saving benefits and services.” Amber Wilson, senior director of policy, education, workforce and strategic initiatives for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, said this partnership is aimed at providing continued value to the chamber’s members. “I think the goal from the chamber’s perspective is just to add more value to chamber membership and to again acknowledge the importance of the economic impact of the business community, which is what we do to support our members,” she said. “So, it’s just another cost-savings benefit that you get if you’re a chamber member.” Wilson said these new parking benefits at Sky Harbor are part of a larger array of benefits the chamber is providing to its members. “I think it’s important that if you’re not a member of our chamber that you take a look at those benefits and real-

ly understand how valuable chamber membership is,” Wilson said. She is also appreciative of the effort put forth by Sky Harbor. “I think it sends a message that the airport values the economic impact of the business community and wants to recognize that through offering these discounts,” Wilson said. Heather Shelbrack, public information manager for Sky Harbor, said this program is part of a larger Sky Harbor Corporate Discount Program, which is aimed at giving back to the community. “We want to provide programs for everyone in our community so they may also be able to book touchless parking and access special offers and perks,” she said. “We are currently piloting the program with several different organizations and companies in the Phoenix travel community.” She said that because so many of

the Glendale Chamber of Commerce’s members are small businesses, the partnership “was a natural fit.” Shelbrack said that Sky Harbor also wants to help give back to these communities because they help the airport’s business, too. “In an effort to support the local community and organizations that help drive Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, we wanted to give back by providing programs for all types of organizations, especially small businesses, that are starting to increase travel,” she said. Shelbrack said the partnership with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce is an extension of a program that was put into place last year. They hope to expand it. “We want to engage the broader community and have a relationship with our valued customers of all types as they travel through Phoenix,” she said.

Throne Brewing expands to Downtown Phoenix BY ALLISON BROWN

Glendale Star Staff Writer

PUZZLE ANSWERS

Glendale-based and family-owned Throne Brewing Company has taken over Pizza People Pub in Downtown Phoenix, making it its third store since its March 2018 founding. The new location at 1326 N. Central Avenue merged the two businesses into Throne Brewing & Pizza Kitchen with a soft opening on Aug. 3. It will keep the basics of the Pizza People Pub, including staff, while making a few modifications. “It was a new acquisition, so it’s all new ownership, but our intentions weren’t to get rid of any staff,” owner Carlos Toma said. “That’s why we’re kind of in a soft opening phase, instead of waiting for an outside sign and doing a little remodeling. We decided to do a soft opening because we know how important it is right now for people to have their jobs. “We’re going to be expanding hours. And then the food menu that a lot of people came to love, like the scratchmade pizza and macaroni and cheeses, are all staying. From our Glendale location, we have developed some relationships in getting local spirits and local wines, so we’ll incorporate that for sure in the downtown location. Then the beers that they had, we’ll be replac-

ing all those with Throne beers.” Toma purchased the already-established Dubina Brewing, Glendale’s first locally owned brewery, in 2018 and renamed it. Things went well in Glendale, and he opened a second location in Peoria to focus on production in April 2020. With more space and a new canning line, Throne found its way into Sprouts, Whole Foods, AJ’s Fine Foods, Total Wine, Topgolf in Scottsdale and Gilbert, and, most recently, State Farm Stadium. Many bars were shuttered due to

COVID-19, and Toma said Throne was hit hard, but it survived on the increased production, to-go orders and a skeleton crew. “When we took over our Peoria facility (in 2020), a lot of people saw that as the worst timing, but we were able to focus a lot on distribution,” Toma said. “A lot of corporate retail accounts that were usually a little harder to get into opened up to a lot of local breweries, and some reached out to us and made it more accessible to get into those accounts.” When talking to the owner of Pizza People Pub, Toma said the acquisition seemed like a perfect way to expand to Downtown Phoenix. As for the pub, it agreed that this was the best decision for both parties. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we are forever grateful for the warm welcome we received as we reopened the pub by everyone who has supported us through good times and bad,” Pizza People Pub said in a statement. “Your loyalty and friendship to Pizza People Pub will not soon be forgotten. Now it is simply our time to pass the

torch of this special place on to the good people of Throne Brewing. We believe this is a great fit for all of us downtown. “Fear not, our delicious pizza and other menu favorites will still be available. Please stop in for a delicious pint of fresh, local beer and say hello to the new owner. We love you and say thank you for our time shared over the years.” Throne’s fresh, local beer began as a side project more than 10 years ago, in a combined restaurant and convenience store with over 500 craft beers that Toma’s family owned in Downtown Phoenix. During that time, he started homebrewing to understand the process more and, while he calls himself “an amateur brewer at best,” he can step in for any of their brewers if needed. While it no longer operates a convenience store, Throne is still a family business. Toma’s dad and brother help with packaging, canning and remodeling, and his mom and sister work with bookkeeping and accounting. Toma said they have mainly been working on getting licensing, permits and a new sign outside, and hope to have an official grand opening for Throne Brewing & Pizza Kitchen in around six weeks.

Writing a vision is necessary for communication An 80-year-old couple was worried because they kept forgetting things. The doctor assured them that there was nothing seriously wrong except old age. He suggested they carry a notebook and write things down so they wouldn’t forget. Several days later, the older man got up to go to the kitchen. His wife said, “Dear, get me a bowl of ice cream while you’re up.” “OK.” Then she said, “… and put some chocolate syrup on it and a few cherries on it, too.” Finally, she added, “You had better write all this down.” “I won’t forget,” the man said. Twenty minutes later, he came back into the room and handed her a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon. She glared at him. “I told you to write it down! I knew you would forget!” “What did I forget?” he asked. She replied, “My toast.” Think of algebra to those of you who are dissatisfied with old age and would like to go back to your youth. Enough said. Let’s explore the subject of vision. Vision is a compelling picture of a preferable future that motivates a person or a group of people to perform. The prophet Habakkuk in the Bible knew the process of vision because God revealed it to him at a discouraging time in his life and Israel’s life. Let’s glean from ancient wisdom what Habakkuk learned, and we can glean, too. “And then God answered: “Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in big block letters so that it can be read on the run. This vision message is a witness pointing to what’s coming. It aches for the coming — it can hard-

ly wait! And it doesn’t lie. If it seems slow in coming, wait. It’s on its way. It will come right on time.” Habakkuk 2:2-3. That’s practical and easy applied if you are willing to do the second step of the process. First, see the vision. Then write down the vision for us or others, and then start to implement the idea to move it from revelations to reality. Let’s summarize. See the vision, write the vision and make it clear, tell the vision, wait for the proper time to start, and start to implement it. Most are good at the “tell-a-vision” part but not very good at the “do-a-vision” part. Why? We never write the vision down. The idea stays in the thought world, never becoming real and tangible in the real world. The idea turned into scrambled eggs and bacon without toast rather than ice cream with chocolate and cherries. It wasn’t clear. Sound familiar? Where does the successful completion of a creative enterprise start? It’s in the “write a vision and make it clear” part. Writing the vision turns an idea into something people can read, see it on paper in writing, and start to understand. Writing a vision down is necessary for communicating it to yourself and others. Think of how many good ideas are

lost in “idealand.” You can move from “dream to done” just by having a notepad next to your bed each night. But, if you are like me, you get frustrated when you try to remember the fantastic idea you had in the middle of the night. I’ve lost more ideas than a centipede has legs, because I was going to put that notepad next to my bed but didn’t. Greg Meyer says, “If I had a dollar for every million-dollar idea I’ve had, I’d be rich.” Sound familiar? Also, writing the idea down enables you to consider the cost and guide you in making the vision a reality. Jesus says in Luke 14:28-30, “Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn’t first sit down and figure the cost so you’ll know if you can complete it? If you only get the foundation laid and then ran out of money, you’re going to look foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at you, saying, ‘He started something he couldn’t finish.’” Author Peter Lowe encourages us not to “spend time living … but to invest time living.” Directional thinkers invest time in their goals and visions and plan their time around their dreams and visions. Most directional people aren’t driven. They are wise. Where did they start? They wrote down the vision. Then the idea became a product. There is no such thing as million-dollar ideas — only million-dollar executions. Implementation becomes possible when communication starts. Where does communication start? When you write it down and make it straightfor-

ward so others may run with it. One time I was in London speaking at a large conference with prominent speakers. I guess it was one of them. I was seated next to Cindy Jacobs, a prophetic person who hears from God. During another speaker’s presentation, she kept on whispering to me out of the side of her mouth, “Write the book. Write the book. Write the book.” That was a confirmation of what I already knew. God wanted me to write a book titled “Church@Community.” Today, that book is a reality, plus nine other books I have written. Why? I “wrote the book.” Do you want to go up? Then write it down! And that will get you more than toast! If you don’t write it down, your idea or vision is toast. Ed Delph is Phoenix native who lives in the North Valley. Aspire 2021 Tour to host three events in Arizona BY LAUREN SERRATO Glendale Star Staff Writer

The nationwide Aspire 2021 Tour will make three stops in Arizona in November. What started in Arizona in 2014 as a small event has now grown into a traveling tour that will visit 36 cities and more than 18 states this fall. This year’s event will feature one Bible teacher, one comedian and one musician, all in hopes of providing a girls’ night filled with fellowship and spiritual growth. “It’s a one-night women’s event filled with laughter, learning stories and music. It entails bringing women together for fellowship, for fun, but also to dig into the word of God,” said Mia Koehne, one of Aspire’s co-founders. “We have fantastic comedians, wonderful singer-songwriters and worship leaders, and tremendous authors and speakers and Bible teachers. And, so, it’s really just an event to get ladies out, remind them that it might be tough, but we’re in this together. We’re not alone. And we can have fun while we remember that we’re loved.” Koehne is also a host for Aspire events, a speaker for Compassion International, a singer-songwriter and a worship leader.

Mia Koehne, Anita Renfroe and Alli Worthington took the stage at past Aspire women’s events and look forward to doing the same as this year’s tour will visit 36 cities and more than 18 states. (Photo courtesy of Extreme Faith Productions)

Having witnessed the growth of Aspire and the women’s events, Koehne said the mission has stayed the same. “I always want them to leave with hope, and they can expect to leave reminded that they’re loved,” she said. “I hope they leave with a reminder of the hope that there are people that

are walking life along with them and that it’s OK to laugh. We need laughter in our lives because even though our event has music and teaching, laughter has this way of breaking down walls in people, whether they come and they’ve been hurting, they laugh, and their hearts are open and they leave with that reminder that, you know what, life might be tough, but we can get through it.” While Koehne admitted there are many other worship services, she said Aspire is special. “What’s unique is that in an age where everything is trying to be big and fill stadiums, what’s unique about Aspire is that we will go wherever we’re called, whether it’s a small venue, a small church,” she said. “When you come, you are going to have contact with the speakers, the singers, the songwriters, the comedians, you’re going to have that one-on-one connection with the people that are on the stage.” Aspire will make three stops in Arizona in November, in Tempe on Nov. 12, Tucson on Nov. 13, and Yuma on Nov. 14.

No matter the size of the venues, Koehne guarantees that Aspire events always feel intimate. “You will get the chance to connect with people that just come in that are sitting next to you. And I think a lot of times in some of the larger events, which are also wonderful, you might miss out on connecting with the people that are speaking from the stage that are speaking something into your heart,” she said. Aspire is a brand of Chandler-based Extreme Faith Productions, which has promoted converts and events across the United States since 2002. Its goal is to serve God’s people by providing quality events to the Christian community. As the team gears up to begin the tour, Koehne said the Arizona shows always have a special place in the team’s heart. “It’s home,” she said. “It’s just the level of feeling like this is a family event that’s being put on is a little accelerated more than other towns. So, the Tempe, Tucson and Yuma shows are just like home. It feels like home.” Of all the fun offered during Aspire events, Koehne has a favorite. “It’s a given that I love the teachings, and as a musician I love the music,” she said. “But I’ve got to tell you, most of the time there is something about the comedy in these nights. For me that just fills me. With the ups and downs of life I think it’s that laughter that just fuels my soul.” While the shows may be far for some of the West Valley residents, Koehne said they’re open to everyone, anywhere, now more than ever during the pandemic. “We see that more, coming out of the lockdown because people have been so desperate to be in community, to be at a live event that they’re willing to jump on a plane and come to where we are. But what we love about Arizona especially, it is home territory for us,” she said. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit aspirewomensevents. com.

Local performers hit stage for ‘Affair-athon’ BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF When Valley Youth Theatre streams its VYTal Affair-athon fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 21, Glendale and Peoria residents may recognize familiar faces on VYT’s stage. Anna Mettes has been singing and dancing since she was young. She grew up in Glendale and attended high school at Arizona School for the Arts. Now 19, she’s a sophomore at Grand Canyon University working toward a Bachelor of Arts in theater and drama with a double minor in dance and musical theater. Her participation in VYT’s signature annual fundraiser is only fitting. “It will be the fourth year in a row I’ve been able to participate in the fundraiser,” Mettes said. “VYT has been the place where I have grown and learned the most about myself as a performer and as a person.” And Mettes has had plenty of opportunities for growth. Her VYTal Affair-athon performance of “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from “La La Land” will cap off a long tenure at VYT. She performed in eight shows there, but “Tuck Everlasting” and “Freaky Friday” were her favorites. Mettes is one of nearly 100 performers who will participate in VYTal Affair-athon, an eight-hour, Jerry Lewis-style telethon featuring live and recorded interviews and performances from current “VYTkids” and alumni cast members, including stars of stage and screen like Broadway’s Nick Cartell, who recently completed a twoand-a-half-year run as Jean Valjean in the National Tour of “Les Misérables.” VYT veterans like Mettes will be joined by younger performers across the Valley, including Glendale sixth grader Reagan Little. The 11-yearold is part of VYT’s show choir, VYTweens, and jumped at the chance to perform in VYTal Affair-athon.

“I have really loved my time being in the VYTweens group,” said Little, who began performing when she was 8 and has graced many Valley stages. She will sing “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from “Cinderella” for VYTal Affair-athon. “This song has different meanings for different people. By singing this song, I hope it reminds people of something special to them.” Bobb Cooper is VYT’s longtime artistic director. “This event is an opportunity to showcase the incredible talent in Phoenix to people around the world,” Cooper said. “The cast for this fundraiser includes performers as young as 9 years old, seasoned professionals who were in our shows 30 years ago, and everyone in between. It’s going to be a day of amazing performances.” The fundraiser will stream live from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at vyt.com and on facebook.com/valleyyouththeatre. The virtual event replaces the 27th annual VYTal Affair, the theater’s biggest annual fundraiser. It’s the second year the COVID-19 crisis prompted VYT to take the event online.

“We are truly grateful for the swell of support we’ve received over the last 18 months,” Cooper said. “It has touched our hearts and reaffirmed our commitment to inspire young people to be the best they can be — on stage and, more importantly, in life.” Most of the performances were pre-recorded in July. In addition to vocal numbers, the event will include live Zoom interviews with alumni, multi-track numbers and a few surprise guests. A highlight of the fundraiser is the 21-year reunion of the cast of West Side Story, which VYT produced at the Herberger Theater in 2000. Five alumni performers from the original production — Nick Cartell, Katie “Rex” Casey, Chris Ciccarelli, Sharie “Combs” Nievar and Ian Sidden — will virtually perform the “Tonight Quintet.” Each hour of the telethon will be hosted by a local celebrity, including Yetta Gibson, Gina Salazar Hook, John Hook, Brad Perry and Carey Peña. The fundraiser also will include a silent auction featuring travel, entertainment, skin care, spa, hotel, and food and beverage packages.

“VYTal Affair-athon will jump-start the next phase of Valley Youth Theatre,” Cooper said. “This year has taught me about how everything can go away in the blink of an eye and how important it is to know the value of every experience and every person in your life,” Mettes said. “I hope VYT continues to be a place for hope and comfort and beautiful art like it was for me. To my time at VYT in the words of Ben Platt: ‘I love you more than you’ll ever wrap your head around.’” Once she graduates college, Mettes hopes to perform on a cruise line before heading to New York City. For her part, Little just wants to get back on stage. “This year has taught me patience,” she said. “I hope to perform with my friends, on stage, in person again.” It looks like Little will get her wish. VYT just announced its return to live performances. The theater will stage “Spookley the Square Pumpkin, The Musical” from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31. Rounding out the season are the 25th annual production of “A Winnie-thePooh Christmas Tail,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Junie B. Jones, The Musical” and “High School Musical.” High-profile performers who got their start at VYT include Emma Stone, Jordin Sparks, Kimiko Glenn, Chelsea Kane, Max Crumm, Matt Dallas, Columbus Short, Nick Cartell and Sam Primack.
