Patricia Grahmann earns highest award in Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts, Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, has honored Chandler resident Patricia Grahmann with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive. Patricia is one of 25 girls to earn the award in 2015.

Patricia graduated from Chandler Preparatory Academy in May 2014 and attends Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She is considering a major in biology or neuroscience.

This prestigious award requires a girl to stretch her skills and step forward as a leader to meet a local or global need and create a sustainable change. In the process, she develops and enhances her own leadership, determination, creativity and confidence.

When Patricia was 5, she asked everyone attending her birthday party to bring a stuffed animal, instead of a birthday present. She then took the stuffed animals to the pediatric ward at a nearby hospital and gifted them to patients.

The birthday tradition ultimately inspired her Gold Award project. She began “Celebrate with Banner,” a program to teach children about the joy of giving by encouraging them to collect donations for their birthday, rather than presents for themselves. Patricia worked with the Cardon Children’s Medical Center communication team to include “Celebrate with Banner” in their email marketing, on social media and on their website. Since the launch of her

project, more than 700 items have been donated to the children’s center.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly a significant achievement,” said Tamara Woodbury, chief executive officer of GSACPC. “These girls saw a need in their communities, developed a plan and took action to resolve the issue. Their dedication, perseverance, and leadership is making the world a better place.”

Completing a Gold Award project usually takes 18 to 24 months and

often involves seeking in-kind donations and recruiting volunteers. Gold Awardees distinguish themselves in the college admission process, earn college scholarships and enter the military one rank higher.

The Gold Award recipients were honored at the 2015 Girl Scout Gold Award Celebration on Saturday, March 28, at the Glendale Civic Center.
