Carlton House Unlocks a World of Wisdom

n the vibrant community of Oak Bay Village, Carlton House, an independent living senior’s residence, is quietly redefining what it means to thrive later in life. With approximately 95 residents of different backgrounds, and 42 employees, the community is supporting learning and growth by looking inward to an extraordinary resource: the knowledge and experience of residents and staff. Since January 2024, this treasure trove of careers, hobbies, stories, and interests has fueled the community’s highly popular Passion Projects Speakers Series. Far from the outdated notion that retirement signals an end to learning or growth, the program actively encourages residents and staff to present on topics of their choice, in areas of their interest or expertise. The initiative was introduced well over a year ago by Carlton House’s Wellness Manager, Debby Macmurchie, and it has quickly become a fan favourite. Always well-attended, these in-house “TED Talks” bring people together twice a month and enrich their lives through shared learning and connection. “It’s incredible to witness the sense of purpose and connection this program fosters,” observes Macmurchie. “The room is always packed, residents genuinely support one another, and afterwards, everyone knows each other a little better.” The scope of presentations is as diverse as the residents themselves. From a former NASA career to a resident who

t The Old Farm Market, we hear the concerns of our community — especially around the sourcing of our products. Questions about avoiding American produce have, of course, come up more often lately, and we understand where they come from. We share the same values of supporting local farms, Canadian growers, and ethical supply chains. In fact, we prioritize it when sourcing our products. However, we also live in a nuanced world where not every customer can afford to pay a premium for non-American alternatives. For many families, especially in today’s economy, access to affordable fresh food isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. Our community’s most vulnerable need access to healthy food at affordable prices.

This is why our buying approach is rooted in balance. We prioritize Canadian and local produce when it’s seasonally available, and we make those options as visible and plentiful as possible. At the same time, we won’t leave behind the families who depend on affordable pricing to put nutritious food on the table. Sourcing both locally and affordably is a balancing act that requires us to consider every single one of our customers. At The Old Farm Market, our mission is to feed people — all people — fairly and affordably. We believe the best kind of food policy is one that includes everyone; everybody should have access to healthy food without barriers. Thank you for supporting our values, our farmers, and our community — even when the choices aren’t always simple.
