George Kazmiruk

DFC and Belgian Croix de Guerre Born in Challons, France in 1891, obtained a law degree from University of France, became a British Citizen in 1914, and enlisted in Royal Flying Corps in Canada in October 1915. Following training in England he joined No. 13 Squadron in France.

1930-2020 Served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, during which he was involved in the Korean War. George spent over 1900 days at sea but when he was on dry land, he was a loving husband to Frances and kind, supportive father to Dan, Marg, Peter, and Bob.

At first assigned to artillery observation flying a 2-seater biplane, he soon began using his plane as a single-seater scout. He became a decorated Air Ace, shooting down nine enemy planes and was awarded the DFC and Belgian Croix de Guerre. One outstanding dogfight took place when his squadron of 7 ran into an enemy squadron of 18 coming in “at 2 o’clock”, among them was Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron. In the end, only two planes remained in action, one of them Delhaye’s who managed to take his machine down after colliding with the German’s.

In 1932, he joined the RCAF Auxiliary in Canada and in 1942 went to No. 3 Training Command in Montreal where he became Chief Staff Officer and in 1944 was promoted to Air Commodore. It was during a training flight, in November 1945, the Harvard he was in crashed on takeoff and he was killed. He was described by Air Marshall A. Raymond at the time “as a most efficient and courteous officer, an expert pilot and a particularly fine gentleman”. He was survived by his wife, Doreenie, and his son, Desmond, in Vancouver, BC. His grandson, David Delhaye, years later wrote in a school essay, “He never lost a fight in the air”.
