Heritage Homes built on trusted traditions T he local team behind Heritage Homes Auckland South is clear in its understanding that while modernism has influenced architecture for the past 80 years, there is a strong and growing trend back towards classic, character homes which embrace bygone eras. The company offers a broad selection of character home designs, which exude all the beauty and charm of the past, and feature all the fixtures for enjoying modern family life from cottages and villas through to bungalows. Each can be changed and tweaked to your needs. Additionally, a full design and build service is provided to ensure your home perfectly suits your site, family needs and taste. Each home is designed by architects who have a strong sense of aesthetic, influenced by the best of architectural character and styles and are built by an award-winning team. Managing director, Kylie Bosanac says, importantly, these homes include all the up to the minute building standards and modern essentials – open plan living, good insulation, great use of light and double glazed joinery, smart-home technology and many other modernisms – required for comfortable living. Clients will also be thrilled with the range of products and fittings Heritage Homes source to complement the style of each home. Small things, such as the right tapware, can make a huge impact on keeping authenticity consistent. “Almost everyone we talk to has special memories of character

homes which have touched their lives in some way. We love hearing these stories, and sharing ours too as we recreate these wonderful masterpieces,” Kylie says. “Heritage Homes fit in really well with our philosophy of ‘building beautiful futures’ because an integral part of where we are going, comes from where we have been. As an analogy (and a bit of philosophy) – we use timber framing and timber cladding in our homes – timber is a sustainable product which lasts and lasts…100-200 years ago this wasn’t too different. The styles and colours choices may have changed, but the bones are the same and will continue to be so for years to come.” “We have always believed home owners deserve more than a cookie cutter, square box for a home. The Heritage Homes range of designs is a chance to take inspiration from the past, add the best of today, and produce a home which will stand for generations. Naturally, we provide fixed price contracts and the comprehensive Master Build 10-year guarantee.” Our office is at the Nick Bosanac Builders Showhome – 12 Jonah Lomu Drive, Paerata Rise. This home is a modern country home which reflects our personal style while also featuring a variety of heritage features and workmanship you’d expect to find in any Heritage Homes build. Who’s the mongrel, then?
Like many readers, I receive a regular SPCA newsletter and I’m constantly amazed by both the kindness of people and the depravity of people.
One recent newsletter highlighted an incident in which three puppies were locked in a metal cage which was then dumped down a bank in an isolated forest area. The pups were left without food, water or shade and no chance of escape. Had it not been for some forestry workers who noticed tyre tracks, followed them and came upon the terrified the pups, they would have come to a very bad end.
contemptible act. So, I’m thinking it’s time our courts dealt more harshly with such offenders when caught. To date, I haven’t been all too impressed with most sentencing. In fact, it seems that few people who show cruelty to animals, are actually brought to justice, possibly because they cannot be identified or sometimes because it is so costly to take a case to court. Perhaps we could all be more mindful about the work of the SPCA (and other animal shelters) and show our own humanity by making a donation – every little bit helps.
Fortunately, the pups were rescued and taken to the SPCA where they were named Hope, Charity and Forest. At time of writing, their care was in hand and homes were being sought – wonderful, but it raises the question of why people do such despicable acts. I’ve always thought that, in the main, Kiwis were kind, humane and honourable but there was no honour or kindness attached to this

entertainment!
Christmas parades Dates, times and locations vary With so much to do and so many places to be delivering presents all around the world on December 25, it must be like a walk in the park for old Saint Nick. In particular, southern Auckland and northern Waikato host the big man on numerous occasions alone, including during Santa and Christmas parades in Tuakau (Dec 7), Papakura and Pukekohe (Dec 8), Pokeno (Dec 13), and Waiuku (Dec 14).
Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet December 7-8, 8.30-10.30pm, The Civic, Cnr Queen & Wellesley Streets, Auckland City “These violent delights have violent ends... as they kiss, consume.” Based on a film inspired by one of the most famous works by one of the world’s most famous writers, this stage show is set to consume once again. Backed by an orchestra, choir and band (with players including Gin Wigmore and Jon Toogood), this musical re-telling of a timeless tragedy will be (we think) too good to miss. See aucklandlive. co.nz for details.

Shakespeare may have been around for centuries but it won’t be long before he ‘pops’ off abroad! To mark the Pop-up Globe’s final season in Auckland, this remarkable venue will host a ‘summer of love’ leading off with the immortal bard’s immortal classic story of love and tragedy, Romeo & Juliet, as well as a South Pacific re-telling of Much Ado About Nothing and more. Chips off the old block are set to star during this iconic competition as local favourites such as the McDonald boys (Nathan, William and David), compete against champion siblings from Taranaki, Shane and Jack Jordon. Another top local, Jesse Whitehead, also expects to make his mark along with even more top choppers from both sides of the Tasman, ensuring this event is again set to prove that this sport’s grassroots are (perhaps) at their greenest in Waiuku.

A new lifestyle awaits seniors at beautiful Karaka Lifestyle Estate which hosted a welcome lunch and village update for residents set to move into their new villas over the upcoming months. The opportunity to mix and mingle, and to view one of the newly completed villas, heightened the owners’ anticipation of new friendships and luxurious living in a stunning rural setting. Photographer WAYNE MARTIN was there.

KARAKA LIFEST YLE VILL AGE
First residents full of praise Luxurious new retirement village – Karaka Lifestyle Estate at Drury – is expecting its first residents in December and the next group in February. A third block is due for completion in May 2020. Enjoying a lovely waterside location with a beautiful old-world Country Club overlooking the swimming pool and green fields beyond, the new village is all about character, luxury and individuality. SOUTH magazine asked some of the estate’s new residents what attracted them to the village – here is what they had to say:
ROBERT AND CHRIS HOWLET T We had been vaguely looking at retirement places for down the track but as [Chris] is still working it wasn’t something we intended to concentrate on just now. However, we read about the village and it sounded like us so we decided to take a look at what was in the pipeline. Once here, we just signed up without a second thought. The whole social environment appealed and the pool was another aspect which won us over – it’s beautiful and there’s going to be an indoor heated pool and spa too! We could also see there would be no worries about home security if we went away on holiday; there’d always be someone to feed the cat! For us, it was important, too, that any absence would be noticed. It’s nice to think someone would ask after us or check the unit if we weren’t seen for a day or two when we should have been. Of course, with the variety of upcoming amenities such as a theatre, restaurant, gym, library, billiards room and bowling green not to mention beauty and hairdressing services, we have no regrets at leaving behind our Mangere family home of 34 years.

BARRY AND BRENDA GERARD We’re Karaka residents and presently live just a stone’s throw from the new village. When we saw it advertised in SOUTH magazine we came straight down and fell in love with the estate. It was so well placed – close to the motorway (and our friends) but overlooking green fields with gorgeous walkways all around – a really beautiful spot. On visiting, we were made exceptionally welcome; nothing was too much trouble. Of course, the pool and the stunning clubhouse easily won us over as did planned facilities and socialising opportunities. However, we especially loved the spacious villas and that they were all different – not like many regimented retirement village units; more like an attractive subdivision with individual styles and materials. We’ve purchased a three-bedroom villa which also means we’re not going into a pokey unit from a large house. What’s more we no longer have two and a half acres of lawns to cut, either! Now, there’ll be time for other interests. www.southmagazine.co.nz
28/11/2019 5:34:01 PM
COLLEEN (AND DENIS) CURRIE We knew that at some stage we would need to move from our Pukekohe home to something smaller or to a retirement village environment. We had looked at a couple of different places but they weren’t what we wanted. On reading about Karaka Lifestyle Village, we came to look and liked what we saw…a lot. In fact, we were so taken with the clubhouse, and the location, that we decided to make the move sooner rather than later – we didn’t want to miss out. As a result we’ve sold out home and will move into our three bedroom villa early next year. Like others, we were attracted by the various design options, colours and materials. The street isn’t a row of look-alike houses, it just feels like a normal street but with all the advantages of security, recreational facilities and many luxuries, all at our fingertips.
GUS AND KATHY SMITH We’ve lived in Drury for the past 17 years and had been thinking about retirement village living among other options. We had read about Karaka Lifestyle Estate but missed the open day. Still keen to see what was on offer we made an appointment to view and from the first we were impressed. Importantly, we wanted to stay in the area and this was close to our present home – the proximity of the village to Drury was a big attraction. We liked the idea of being handy to old friends whilst having the additional ‘bonus’ of making new friends. On-site socialising benefits and facilities cannot be faulted. Most importantly, we were impressed by the capital gains incentive which meant there wouldn’t be a major loss of equity should the time come to sell. Ultimately it didn’t take us long to decide on a three bedroom villa with double garage close to the clubhouse. Now we are just looking forward to moving in.
We welcome your visit at Karaka Lifestyle Estate Retirement Village Come along to experience our beautiful Country Club, view plans of our village, and learn more about Karaka Lifestyle Estate. Karaka Lifestyle Estate is a new independentliving retirement village in Drury. The first units will be ready for occupation this December. Karaka Lifestyle Estate features spacious homes, friendly community atmosphere and the management support you would expect of a topquality retirement village but it comes with a key difference, at Karaka Lifestyle Estate you get the capital gain from the sale of your unit.
Our new village is in a lovely waterside location with a beautiful old-world Country Club. We pride ourselves on providing a supportive, warm and welcoming environment for our residents. Karaka Lifestyle Estate could be for you if retaining your wealth is important to you, and you are looking for: - Safe and secure retirement living - A strong and lively social network - The hassles of home maintenance taken care of - A supportive environment, with an onsite manager

Write of passage She started her new life in New Zealand working in a freezing works and has just published her first book. Author, Dione Jones can spin a good yarn both on and off the page as ANGELA KEMP explains. There’s something undeniably English about Dione despite her spending most of her life in New Zealand. She’s named after an ancient Greek goddess but there is nothing mythical about this practical and independent woman who can seemingly turn her hand to anything. She was born in England and grew up in the countryside surrounded by National Trust common land and says she attempted writing her first book at age 10. She went on to achieve a BA at Trinity College, Dublin and then worked for an aeroplane salesman and learnt to fly, before venturing to New Zealand to help set up a laboratory to collect animal blood. In 2014 Dione was awarded a Master of Creative Writing from the Auckland University of Technology. Now, her first novel, The Alexandrite, has hit the bookshelves running with rave reviews and an early place in the best sellers list. She’s drawn on her own experiences to great effect in this story of class conflict, hidden sins, and deceit set in a wartime English village to present day New Zealand. Although a late bloomer in the literary field, Dione first made her mark when she won the annual National Flash Fiction competition for short stories (maximum 300 words). She’s also an executive member of boutique publishing company Cloud Ink. She rises at 6am each morning to write for an hour or two at the Ardmore farm she shares with her property developer husband Chris, a large number of sheep and 25 polo ponies (at the last count). So how did she end up in the freezer works?
14 | south | december 2019
South December 2019.indd 14
“My sister was a vet and her husband was setting up a company in Melbourne which I was going to work for,” Dione says. “The company was to be based in a freezing works collecting blood. But when I got there he said he was setting up in Auckland instead. I asked in what part of Australia was that!”
a journalist when I left school. But everyone told me that it would be too hard and too difficult to get into.
Subsequently, Dione headed for New Zealand too.
After raising two children – son, Jeremy has followed in his father’s footsteps and is a top polo player – Dione felt a strong urge to write fiction and she produced a couple of books, “but I knew they weren’t any good”.
“I worked in a laboratory in Otahuhu and dealt with three freezing works, none of which are there now. It was quite a culture shock.” Indeed, it was a far cry from the comfortable life she’d enjoyed growing up in Hertfordshire where she had the freedom of riding her ponies across miles of bridleways and playing cowboys and Indians with her childhood friends. Nevertheless, Dione was soon back in the saddle in her new homeland and her love of riding led her to meet her future husband, polo player Chris Jones. At the time, Chris was working on the family sheep and beef farm in Whitford. After their marriage they moved to a 50-acre farm at Ardmore and Dione became, in her words, a farmer’s wife. But that was to be short-lived. Chris, who used to be on the national polo team, changed tack and become a property developer while Dione was soon writing newsletters and a magazine for the polo players and supporters. It seemed her early aspirations to be a professional writer were coming to fruition. “I was always interested in writing and thought I would like to become
“Instead, I went to university and studied English which qualified you for nothing except teaching which I wasn’t into, so I went off and did other things.”
She joined the South Auckland Writing Group in Papakura and within a few months saw an improvement in her literary talents. The Master of Creative Writing eventually followed and her thesis became the basis for The Alexandrite. Dione is already well on the way with her next book, The Horse from Home which is a set after the First World War. She expects it to be on the shelves in a couple of years’ time. “It’s about the same family as the first book and, again, is set in both England and New Zealand.” Although Dione stopped riding some years ago that could soon change as one of her granddaughters is keen to get a pony. “The polo ponies are thoroughbreds and a bit skittery so, we’re thinking of getting two ‘normal’ ponies that we can all ride.” The Alexandrite is published by Cloud Ink Press. It is available on line and from good bookshops.

AT HOME IN THE COUNTRY MANNER Dione and Chris Jones live in a beautiful two storey English-style home at the end of a tree-lined drive. It was designed by one of New Zealand’s most lauded architects and features low ceilings, beams, heavy oak doors, a glorious inglenook fireplace and an Aga in the kitchen. “Chris used to have a building company and we had it built about 40 years ago,” says Dione. “It was designed by architect, Terry Hitchcock. We chose him because he designed very comforting and comfortable houses that weren’t stark or minimalist. “When we went to see Terry we had no children at the time so we didn’t know if we wanted one bedroom or five bedrooms. We showed him lots of pictures of houses we had visited and liked and a lot of them were in England “He designed it [the new home] about half the size it is now; we’ve added on since and it’s a really nice house.” Now, the couple are undergoing a mass tree planting project, mainly natives as well as ornamentals and it’s Dione’s intention to create a public walkway around the property to be enjoyed by future generations.

Tasty Sydney! A morning caffeine fix is guaranteed to keep HELEN PERRY going all day but the SOUTH editor says a four-day Sydney fix will keep her going for months. Just back from such a sojourn she talks about relaxing in that busy metropolis.
No shopping! That was my pledge before heading to Sydney early last month and I pretty well kept my promise. However, that didn’t apply to dining out and generally enjoying the harbour on days when temperatures reached 29ºC. Staying at the Sofitel Wentworth proved fortuitous – it was just a couple of minutes walk to Circular Quay and was close to the Elizabeth Street pedestrian mall too. However, the spring break didn’t start on a good note. I should have learnt my lesson from past experiences – never ask a Sydneysider for directions! Few seem to know where a store, service or street can be found, not even when standing just metres away. Arriving at Wynyard Station we sought help to find our hotel and were directed to turn right from the station into central George Street then to proceed to Martin Place, carry on up the hill, crossing several streets including Elizabeth Street until reaching Phillip St where we would find the Sofitel. At 10 pm, after a hectic working day, it was some walk dragging our luggage behind us. After 45 minutes (and feeling grumpy) we found our hotel then discovered, had we turned left into George Street from the station taking the first right, just a few strides away, we would have reached the Softel in 10 minutes. Moral of the story? Check the map before leaving New Zealand.

South December 2019.indd 16
However, a good night’s sleep always works wonders. The next few days were all I expected of Sydney and I’m sure those planning to cross ‘the ditch’ in coming months will find plenty to please but when it comes to food, here’s a few dining tips Breakfast – so many options. If on a strict budget check out one of the many mall food halls – there’s bound to me one within strides of any inner city hotel. Choose from a huge selection – colourful fresh fruit salads with Greek yoghurt, fruit-topped pancakes, salmon, cream cheese and avocado filled bagels, a range of ethnic dishes (Turkish, Vietnamese and Thai street food, sushi, pastries and so much more). Alternatively, try Four Frogs Creperie at Circular Quay. Here’s how the story goes – Four French friends (the Four Frogs) living in Australia, fell in love with its beautiful beaches, perfect climate and welcoming Sydney-siders. The only thing missing? Excellent crêpes. As a result the four went into business and now have customers lining up at opening time for both their sweet crepes and savoury galettes – very yum. Of course, there are scores of great breakfast venues so, go explore! Lunch – Take a late morning ferry to Watson’s Bay – an easy way to enjoy this beautiful harbour. On arrival, find a place on the terrace of the Beach Hotel, sit back with a glass of wine and watch the busy
wharf, reserve and foreshore scene – absolutely idyllic, I could have stayed all day. If seeking a light lunch, I suggest the ploughman’s platter; it comes well packed with cold cuts, pickles, paté, calamari and crusty bread – so, so good. Of course, Watson’s Bay is also home to the famous beachfront, seafood restaurant, Doyles which now has a second venue on the wharf; both attract eager patrons. If staying in town and near The Rocks, the Endeavour Tap Room – historic, quaint and with smoked food its specialty – is a little gem. Out walking, we stopped here for a glass of cider then decided to share a small plate of smoked chicken wings (well, chicken nibbles in our language) – $15. Coated with the chef’s ‘secret’ herbs, they were to die for and so moreish! We ordered a second plate (about 9 pieces in each plate). With plenty more on Endeavour’s easy to digest menu, we would go back there in a shot, perhaps readers would too. Dinner – where does one start, and that’s the problem, too many wonderful places. However, some travellers will be driven by budget because Sydney’s five star restaurants can make a big dent in the wallet. Fortunately, there is great dining to be had across the price spectrum. Here are two: Meat & Wine Co (at the Intercontinental Hotel). Hugely popular and a real trend-setter when it comes to décor and ambience. If you’ve had your red
meat ration for the week, don’t be deterred by this menu. Yes, it’s all about steak (well almost) and some of it is expensive (wagyu for example). But you can dine more moderately especially on some of the on-trend ‘hung’ dishes e.g. kangaroo steak skewered on a hook. However, my pick was the shared entrée platters and shared dessert platters – creative, beautifully presented and so, so good. Little Snail (over on the Pyrmont side) A set price of $65 for three courses should make diners smile. As the name suggests – French dining with traditional favourites (e.g. escargots, boullaibaisse, paté maison (Armagnac flavoured duck liver pate with marinated champignons, date chutney and port vinaigrette) as well as a wonderful selection of mains and desserts – check out magret de canard (crispy skin duck breast) or perhaps cote de veau (veal tenderloin with champignon and chardonnay beurre blanc, served with potato croquette and seasonal greens), then finish off with handmade profiteroles or one of several other temptations. Whatever your Sydney plan, my suggestion is – do your restaurant research first; it takes time because there are so many appealing venues so don’t leave it until you arrive. Of course, if you do, then just wander and be prepared to take pot luck. www.southmagazine.co.nz

SUMMER
Holiday time is nearly here and avid readers will be looking forward to time out with a favourite author or a fresh book experience. So, why not check out this quartet of new titles – summer reading all wrapped up!
EAT YOUR HEART OUT
FROZEN SUMMER
BLUE MOON BY LEE CHILD
Whether we say liebe, lyublyu, amore, amour or even hkyithkyinnmayttar, love carries the same meaning in any language. From the sublime to the ridiculous, heart-warming and heart-rending to the passionate and poignant, the tales in this book are sure to appeal to anyone who’s hopelessly devoted or sworn that they’ll never love again. Told with Peta’s inimitable humour, Eat Your Heart Out is a feast of fancies with delicacies running both sweet and sour.
Some cases are colder than others but that doesn’t mean they are destined to remain forever unsolved. The concluding book in Ian Austin’s ripping Dan Caulder trilogy, Frozen Summer expects to see this dogged detective pushed to his limits. One way or another, it all ends here. To read more about Ian and his work, see EastLife’s October 2018 issue, accessible via eastlife.co.nz.
A chance encounter on a bus leads Lee Child’s indomitable character, Jack Reacher, into yet another exciting adventure. As two ruthless rival gangs compete for control of the city, only one man has the skills to mete out justice during the ensuing life and death struggle. Jack Reacher fans will surely put this on their holiday reading list.

THE GIRL WHO READS ON THE METRO While it may not be advisable to judge a person on their looks alone, it seems one can judge a book by its cover. By stepping off her regular train a few stops early, Juliette (aka The Girl Who Reads on the Metro) finds herself stepping into an interesting role at an enchanting bookshop. However, will her new job prove a pleasure or will she find that reading people is not always as straight-forward as she may have thought.

KIDS’ READS
Running out of gift ideas for kiddies is not an option when wonderful children’s books are available in abundance. Here, SOUTH highlights three new delightful titles to enhance Christmas stockings.
PEPPA’S CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY
STINK-O-SAURUS SAVES CHRISTMAS
There are few children’s books as widely known as those featuring the antics of Peppa Pig. In this board book, Peppa is preparing for the festive season but, when last year’s Christmas jumper won’t fit, Daddy Pig must step in and come up with a solution.
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, holly hanging from our doors – such aromas might be synonymous with this time of year but, unless Stan can save the day, a ‘stink’ Christmas is practically guaranteed! The latest addition to a series about a dinosaur with a nose for adventure, this book (which also includes a read-along CD) sees Stan heading to the North Pole to help Santa overcome a few logistical problems with innovative (yet odorous) solutions.

Here are a few activities to keep the whole family occupied throughout the break. Check out local tourism: Why not organise a family foot rally or treasure hunt and get to see your city in a fresh light. For a more educational experience, take the family on a heritage tour and introduce them to your district’s rich history Some ideas include the NZ Warbird Visitor Centre at Ardmore, Glenbrook Vintage Railway, Nikau Glow Worm Caves, the Pukekohe Pioneer Cottage and The Tuakau & District Museum or the Karaka Museum. The arts: Keep your kids’ creative juices flowing with fun activities such as, building a kite, creating
BLONG THE CAT’S COSTUME CAPER When Karen McMillan adopted a starving kitten from Vanuatu, little did she realise that her new-found feline friend would come to mean so much to so many. “I like Blong the Cat because he is cute like our cat Ziggy, but Ziggy only has three legs and Blong has four legs and beautiful big green eyes,” says Coco, a young fan of Karen’s books.
Unfortunately, his taste in clothes is not quite the cat’s whiskers. Will he find the right costume and become a sharp-dressed cat? There’s only one way to find out! Karen McMillan: Blong the Cat’s Costume Caper | RRP $19.99 | Duckling Publishing

labels for the garden, putting together a theatre skit, playing charades, collecting photos for a family album or keeping a diary of holiday activities – what they liked most and didn’t! Outdoor fun: Is there anything more symbolic of childhood summers than a day spent flying the kite they made themselves, throwing a Frisbee, blowing bubbles in the backyard, playing hide-and-seek, building sand castles at the beach or putting up a tent in the backyard? An all-out water balloon fight is sure to please or head out on one of the local walking tracks and do some bird spotting while you’re at it. Sports: There are a multitude of
parks to test soccer, rugby, cricket, softball and biking skills. Head for the local swimming pool or check out rock climbing destinations. Create an obstacle course in your backyard or host your own Olympics at a local park. Gourmet activities: There are many ways to tickle your kids’ taste buds. You could head off on a picnic, take them blueberry picking, have them whip up homemade frozen treats or get with the cake pans for baking. Special outings: As a treat try tenpin bowling, trampolining, movies, mini-golf, a horse-riding experience or kids’ shows. Do a bit of research followed by some good planning; that way the school holidays will be a ball! south | december 2019 | 19

‘KILLER’ DONUTS
gunning it!
Donuts with names such as The Innocent, the Shady, the Arrest and the Witness may well have a villainous ring to them but the founders of Deputy Donuts assured HELEN PERRY these luscious (and perfectly legal) treats, available every week at the Clevedon Farmers Market, are perhaps, better, described as ‘wicked’ or even, ‘wickedly decadent’. Deputies Smith and Luca may sound like they have police connections but it seems their only ‘arrests’ to date are a captive audience who would steal their donut recipe if they could. And, while most chefs are reluctant to spill the beans when it comes to culinary secrets, Beachlands mumtrepreneurs, Becks (Rebecca) Luca and Kahla Smith are happy to tell the world their lip-smacking donuts are all about good, old fashioned whole foods. “No preservatives, no powders and no additives just yeast, flour, eggs and sugar,” Beck says. “They are made on the day we deliver and nothing is held over. We even make all our own fillings – jams, curds and creams.” Furthermore, if picking up a mixed selection from Clevedon, it’s pretty easy to see why Deputy Donuts has lassoed a strong following – it takes some willpower to resist the Witness, a yeast donut filled with lemon curd and mascarpone mousse rolled in vanilla sugar and topped with meringue, or the www.southmagazine.co.nz
South December 2019.indd 21
Parole, filled with spiced apple and fresh cream topped with brown butter and toasted almonds. And, any jury would surely convict a ring donut – boasting of peanut butter frosting, salted nuts and Whittakers peanut butter chocolate pieces – for being just too enticing! Delectable, though they may be, the journey to perfect this range – and keep adding to it – is as much about elbow grease as it is about licking the tasting spoon. The two sisters-in-law live close to each other and both are semi stay-at-home mums. Whilst still dabbling in their original careers – Kahla is a makeup artist and Becks a graphic and interior designer – the idea of working together on a business idea ‘just seemed logical” Becks says. “Because we both enjoy cooking we started thinking about something we could make that would be a bit different and fit our criteria of luscious but wholesome too. We hit on the idea of donuts with that whole ‘are they the legal/
illegal?’ theme and it just went from there.” Devising a base recipe without using commercial mixes or any type of preservative was the first step, Kahla adds. “There was a fair bit of trial and error experimentation to come up with the first three varieties which we felt were just right. “Then we had to go through certification route with Auckland Council to ensure the kitchen [in Beck’s home] met health and safety standards and achieved it’s A rating. After that it was all go.” Having started their journey back in July last year, ‘Deputies Smith and Luca’ have now fine-tuned their baking pattern and their market. “We bake Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and carrying over one day’s donuts to the next is a ‘no-no’,” Beck says. “We make the fillings separately and at the moment we’re comfortable fulfilling corporate
orders (morning and afternoon teas), selling at Clevedon [Farmers Market] and Pine Harbour in the summer and meeting private orders for parties and social functions.” “We will bake for special events on other days but require a minimum order of 20 donuts; we’re not looking to do cafes or restaurants – for the time being at least.” Of course, like anyone working closely with one particular food product these donut queens confess there are days when they don’t want to look at another donut – “but our husbands and kids, seldom suffer that affliction,” they agree. And, neither do their regulars! These law-abiding cooks sells approximately 300 donuts every weekend at the market and now make more than seven varieties. “People are certainly starting to discover us and the best thing is hearing praise such as ‘so delicious’ ‘absolutely yummy’ and ‘I have to have another one! I guess we would say, business is sweet!” south | december 2019 | 21

GROW YOUNGER WITH GREAT FOOD When hitting the golden years more than a few people would like to turn back the clock and regain some of their youth. Perhaps that’s not as far-fetched as it sounds. Well-known holistic nutritionist, Jessica Giljam-Brown and Dr Catherine Stone, award-winning cosmetic doctor and founder of The Face Place MedSpa, have brought together principles of great health in their new book, Grow Younger with Great Food.
Much more than a cookbook, Grow Younger with Great Food is a compelling resource for people who want to learn how to live and eat for optimum health. It covers topics on hormones, sleep, mood, energy, libido and digestion as well as offering practical tips, advice and more than 90 recipes designed to preserve and improve health. This month SOUTH features this delicious recipe for Summer Tart taken from the book.
SUMMER TART Quinoa makes a nutty and flavourful crust for this tart. We have chosen to fill the crust with pesto and roast tomatoes, but you could fill it with anything you like. The fibre and protein-rich quinoa turns a simple tart into a filling and enjoyable meal. We like that this showstopper of a dish comes together with some very simple ingredients and little time. SERVES 8 PREP TIME 25 MINUTES COOKING TIME 30–40 MINUTES Quinoa crust • 1 cup dried quinoa • 1 1/2 cups water (or a homemade broth if you have been industrious) • 2 Tbsp ground flax meal • 1 tsp Himalayan salt • 1 tsp dried mixed herbs • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 2-6 tsp water • Olive oil for greasing the tin Roasted tomatoes • 15 cherry tomatoes • 2 large heirloom tomatoes • 6 medium tomatoes cut into half or large chunks • 5 sprigs of thyme • Himalayan salt and pepper • 1 Tbsp olive oil Filling • 1 cup classic pesto • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced • 2 handfuls of rocket • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar Place quinoa and water (or broth) in a pot, bring to a boil then simmer with lid on until the quinoa absorbs all the liquid. Once cooked, fluff with a fork and replace the lid on the pot to trap the steam. Preheat oven to 200ºC. Once the quinoa has cooled down www.southmagazine.co.nz
South December 2019.indd 23
enough to touch, mix through the ground flax meal, salt and herbs and beaten egg. Mix until a dough forms, add water one teaspoon at a time until the mixture forms a loose dough. You will usually need 2–6 teaspoons of water, depending on how much water is left in the cooked quinoa. Press the quinoa into a greased 30cm tart tin. Press evenly over the base and up the sides of the tin. Wet your fingertips so that the quinoa doesn’t stick to your hands as you press it in the tin. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden. Remove from oven and leave in tin to cool. While the base is cooking, place the tomatoes in a baking dish with the thyme, and salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 30–40 minutes, or until skins blister and juices start to leak out. Spoon the pesto into the cooled but still warm tart crust and smooth over the base. Carefully spoon the roast tomatoes into the tart crust, arranging evenly. Discard the thyme or use to garnish. Very finely slice the red onion into long rounds and mix with the rocket leaves. Heap the rocket and onion mini salad in a pile on top of the tart. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar over the whole tart.

METHOD To make the kiwifruit cream, blend or juice the kiwifruit and pour into a bowl. Whisk whipped cream, mascarpone and icing sugar together, add kiwifruit juice and store in the fridge to keep the green colour until ready to spread on roulade later. Next, make the golden chutney.
Juice or blend the kiwifruit and pour into a pot with vinegar and castor sugar. Bring to the boil then add to blender with raisins. Blend into a fine puree and set aside for use later.
transfer set pavlova sheet over for easier rolling. Spread the kiwifruit cream all over and roll the pavlova like a swiss roll. Set roulade in the freezer for 2-3 hours before slicing so it doesn’t fall to pieces.
To make the pavlova roulade, pre heat oven to 180c fan bake. Line a shallow baking tin with baking paper. Whisk egg whites until peaks start to form. Add half the castor sugar and continue to beat until mixture becomes shiny and glossy. Add cornflour and vinegar and fold gently, be careful not to lose too much of the volume. Spread mixture evenly onto prepared baking tin around 2cm thick and place into pre-heated oven and bake for 15 minutes. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes.
To make the mint soup, bring a pot of water to the boil. Add mint leaves and blanch for five seconds – refresh straight into ice water and pat dry once cooled. Add kiwifruit, mint and 1/2 cup of stock syrup to a blender. Blend slowly adding more stock syrup until mixture forms a thin soup-like consistency. Chill until use.
Sieve a little icing sugar onto another piece of baking paper and

Parintystyle End of year office parties and company outings will soon be in full swing but some firms may be seeking fun ways to celebrate other than the same old Christmas bash. So, why not shake things up with one of these unconventional party themes. MASQUERADE PARTY
SUSHI PARTY
Leave your jeans and ugly Christmas sweaters in your closet and have your guests come dressed in their finest formal wear for a masquerade ball. Encourage everyone to wear a mask, or have a mask-making station with plain masks and everything you can think of to decorate them including sequins. glitter, feathers, flowers and marker pens. Be sure to snap photos of everyone in their fancy outfits and masks.
Order a takeout platter of sushi, or better yet, make your own. Set up a sushi making station complete with bamboo rolling mats, cooked Japanese rice, sheets of nori (dried seaweed used to wrap sushi rolls) and a variety of sliced fish, veggies and even fruit. Be sure to serve strawberry shortcake for dessert — it’s the traditional Japanese Christmas cake.
TWELVE COURSES OF CHRISTMAS
Of course there are other possibilities for your uniquely themed Christmas get-together. You could go for a rock ‘n’ roll night, a step back in time eg. knights and ladies of old, or simply pick out a colour theme which everyone wears. Invoke your creativity and your Christmas shindig is sure to be unforgettable.
SC4073
This party is all about the food and is great for smaller companies. Create — or have your caterer make — a
twelve-course menu, complete with wine pairings. To avoid becoming absolutely stuffed, ensure each course is relatively small. Perhaps a staff member’s teenage children could act as waiters but, at the end of the night, ensure everyone has a sober driver to take them home.

WRINKLE AND THE SLEEP EFFECT! Beauty sleep isn’t just the stuff of fairy tales – according to research, how we sleep is key to helping prevent wrinkles and retaining youthful looks. It’s well know that a good night’s sleep is essential to feeling refreshed when the sun rises but it’s a lesser known fact that the way we sleep plays a part in how we age day to day. New research from mattress retailer, Ecosa found that as people age, they tend to move away from sleeping in positions such as on the back, stomach and freestyle (a variation in sleep position) in favour of sleeping on one’s side. The sleep position preference study which collected data from more than 730 Kiwis from around the country found that around a sixth (17%) preferred to sleep on their backs, a tenth (8%) slept on their
stomachs and a further quarter (27%) were freestyle sleepers. Sleep wrinkles typically form as we move around in our sleep and sleep with our faces down or pressed up against the pillow. Sleeping on a rough cotton surface can further irritate skin and compress the face for long hours at a time, resulting in wrinkles on the face and chest. It makes sense then that the position of the face when sleeping (one-third of the day!) is going to be a deal-breaker for one’s skin. Stomach or side sleepers create constant pressure on the face, which over time will produce deep, unwanted sleep lines on the forehead and cheeks.
“Researchers have suggested that the reason the side position preference increases with age is due to loss of flexibility of the spine and/or the extra effort required for breathing in the front position, says Mr Chan. “Side sleeping also helps to open our airways to allow for steady airflow to the lungs.
Typically, the loss of collagen and elasticity result in loss of skin volume. Applying repeated pressure (such as sleeping with the side of your face on a pillow) against the collagen will also trigger its breakdown, eventually leading to visible lines. Ecosa CEO Ringo Chan says understanding one’s sleep position is important as it can be associated with a wide range of health concerns – including premature wrinkles. He says while the reasons for our preferences in sleep position are not fully understood by scientists, a number of theories have been put forward.
“Lying on your back and assuming a neutral body position typically results in the least amount of strain on your head, neck and spine. “The New Zealand study results are in line with international data which showed one in every two adults prefer to sleep on their side, which correlated with an increase in age.”

It’s all about style French curve, wrap, slim, elite – are we talking dresses or perhaps handbags? Well, toilet seats actually! Yes, there is a look; there is a shape. And, there is a definite trend!
A global specialist in bathroom design, Kohler has released its latest take on the toilet seat styles now trending in New Zealand. Shape – read aesthetics – is a key consideration, as is hygiene. Kohler’s latest offering places these demands at the top of its features list. With models such as the Grande (back to the wall and wall hung configurations), Kohler offers a choice of three toilet seat options, all of which fit the same toilet pan. The Wrap, whereby the lid wraps over the seat, is a more conventional design, producing a seamless profile. The Slim is a low profile seat and lid which is an inspired choice for the contemporary bathroom. The third and most deluxe offering is the Elite – an identical profile to the Slim but has the added benefit of a concealed scent dispenser (activated when the user comes in contact with the seat) and a night light. The comfort of the seat is a vital aspect of seat design and Kohler
opts for high quality, non-stain resin in a smooth, contoured shape to ensure a comfortable, ergonomic fit on posteriors of many sizes. For those seeking a sense of opulence, Veil is the brand’s flagship intelligent toilet – a selfcleaning bidet and toilet in one appliance – featuring the French curve heated seat with a gently dished shape to minimise the pressure points and create extra comfort. The seat is made from an antibacterial material to enhance hygiene levels while its deodorising carbon filter and LED night light provide extra convenience. Such is the importance of superior design in the humble toilet seat that Modern Life, Kohler’s most recent addition, has won a prestigious international design award! The brand’s first truly rimless toilet, Modern Life is available as back to wall suite and wall faced configurations. It received the Red Dot Design Award for discreet design and outstanding practical cleaning features. It offers the choice of Slim or Elite seats for both pan configurations.
Toilet seats such as Kohler’s Grande, Reach, Modern Life and Parliament are quiet close with vertical quick release operation – the seat can be quickly detached with a ‘one-hand lift’ for fast and easy cleaning.

KITTENS ARE FOREVER
Smith & Sons Pukekohe owners, LANE and MELISSA VAN DEN BRINK know how important it is for a home to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Their advice is designed to guide homeowners smoothly through the renovation process.
DR NIKKI FROST, senior veterinarian at Franklin Vets Pukekohe, talks about kitten care as the season for burgeoning kitten numbers arrives. Yes, kittens are cute…BUT…Just remember adult cats can live for more than 20 years and in that time they will require lots of care to live happy, healthy lives. Here are the basics you need to know before you bring a kitten into your family.
FEEDING After weaning we recommend feeding specially formulated kitten food which is fully balanced to meet all a growing kitten’s nutritional requirements. Always provide fresh water and try to avoid feeding milk as it may cause diarrhoea.
TOILET TRAINING Most kittens will naturally use a litter tray by 4-6 weeks of age. It needs to be in a quiet area, not too close to where your kitten sleeps or eats. Placing your kitten near to or in the litter tray after eating or waking from sleep will help if toilet training seems a bit slow.
FLEAS & WORMING Fleas need to be treated as they can quickly cause serious health problems for kittens such as tapeworms, flea allergy dermatitis, and even anaemia if the flea infestation is severe enough. All kittens need to be treated for roundworms and, if fleas are
present, tapeworms too. Kittens are infected with worms from their mother early in life, so worming can start as early as three weeks of age.
DESEXING & MICROCHIPPING We strongly recommend the de-sexing of all cats which are not intended for breeding. Female kittens should be spayed at four to six months of age. Left any longer, pregnancy is almost a certainty. Males can also be neutered at this age. This will make them less likely to wander and fight. Desexing is also a great opportunity to inject a permanent identification chip under your pet’s skin.
VACCINATION Kittens need vaccinations to help protect them against both cat flu and enteritis. The first vaccination is at eight to nine weeks of age, with a booster three to four weeks later. It takes two weeks after the final injection for the vaccination to be fully effective. A third booster is given at six months and then every three years after that to ensure continued protection. However, an annual health check is recommended and is essential if the cat is be going into a boarding cattery – be sure to do this well ahead of your booked-in date.

With the silly season fast approaching, we are gearing up for a very busy final few weeks trying to complete projects in time for clients to enjoy their beautiful new spaces for Christmas. At this time of the year we often receive enquiries regarding bathroom updates. With family members visiting over Christmas it’s a time when clients normally think about sprucing up this personal area. So, after finishing a number of bathrooms ahead of Christmas here are a few tips for you to consider: • Be realistic about time frames and be aware about how much work actually goes into completing a bathroom – people don’t usually realise just how many trades may be involved when we do a complete gut and refit. Projects also go more smoothly if they are not booked on top of each other – most of the time it’s not a one-week turn around. In fact, some bathrooms can take up to four weeks to finish! • Do you have more than one bathroom? If you are without a bathroom for a few weeks do you have another bathroom you can use or do we need to hire a
portable shower and toilet for you to use during the renovation? • Layout – does the current layout work for you and your family? Is there a bath in your bathroom which just gathers dust and, perhaps, a tiny shower? Why not look at removing the bath and having a large, luxurious shower instead? • Consider relocating fixtures for better flow – separate toilet or all in the same room? The extra cost of moving things around can provide a more practical layout. • Quality bathroom products – select quality over price. If part of the product is in the wall and it fails, the damage can be extensive. Good quality will nearly always go the distance. So, if you are thinking of renovating a bathroom, give the team a call; we can walk you through the entire process.

SUPERMARKET’S FRESH TAKE! For months local residents have eagerly watched the redevelopment of the former Counties Inn site on Paerata Rd in anticipation of a new supermarket. Over the past few weeks they saw development rapidly escalate ahead of the December 3 opening and as SOUTH magazine hit the streets and letterboxes, the new flagship New World was set to officially open. The result of thoughtful planning, the introduction of new departmental services, and innovative layout, heralds a new era in the New World grocery shopping
experience – a first for Pukekohe and the country. Owner operator, Tim Wilson, says he’s keen for customers to discover the store’s fresh take on food-to-go – gourmet meals at their fingertips – out-catering, bakery products, seafood and much more. “This store is all about convenience and a unique customer service,” he says. “I hope shoppers will not only be surprised with our departure from what has been largely considered the norm in supermarkets but will be delighted with the changes initiated.”
