Editor says... Like many others I applaud PM’s Jacinda Adern’s decision to put MP’s pay rises on the back burner for a year. With so many industry sectors having gone without for a long time it seems a circumspect move. I can’t say the same for Auckland mayor, Phil Goff’s decision to take up his $5000 plus wage increase. You might say it’s in pretty poor taste after landing Aucklanders with hefty fuel tax while spending up large on a $260,000 mirror to hang above O’Connell Street in the city and possibly pitching in with a million dollars for a Bastion Point statue.

NEW ROUTE FOR SUMMER: Spring-Summer 2018 calls for confident dressing and audacious style – the kind Ketze-ke has all wrapped up in its daring new range. Sporting a spirited sense of adventure, the collection teams casual comfort with a dash of femininity – check out this Bohemian-esque Saltwater skirt paired effortlessly with a sketched Capiz tee. To complete the look a distinctive Wallis shirt and this season’s ‘must have’, the cap – Route 66 style – adds extra chic! See page 26.

costs have just gone up and up and up. Of course, Phil’s payout pales in comparison to that of some of Auckland local board deputy chairs who we understand are in line for hefty pay hikes some to the tune of $15,000. But enough said, why not forget the worries of councillors and instead take time out to enjoy this month’s SOUTH – I’m sure you’ll find it a good read and it doesn’t cost a cent!

Win!

He might have curried a lot of favour had he said, “look, many Aucklanders are doing it hard at present; I’m on a pretty good wicket and can do without the spare change so I’ll donate it to a worthy cause.”…there are still plenty of them around. What’s more it might have been a smart political move. I suppose, that’s a bit rich to expect but, really, I can think of a number of people who haven’t had a pay rise in years yet their household

Q&A Eastcliffe on Orakei Retirement Resort

Hazel Lanyon Is it possible to do some part time or voluntary work while living at Eastcliffe. If so, have you taken advantage of this and, if so, in what way?

Tony & Shirley Harvey

We can certainly continue doing whatever we did before moving here, as well as taking advantage of the great facilities here. Tiri, my Sheltie, and I have kept up our weekly visits to the care home of another

retirement village, and we have also been attending a school where I encourage children to read, by reading to a dog (Outreach Therapy Pets is organised by the SPCA and St John’s. We have to pass tests and be reassessed every two years). Tiri and I now visit people in our own hospital and care wings at Eastcliffe. The only limit to what we can do is how much we can fit into our own time.

Retirement resorts generally offer many opportunities to socialise. Is this true of Eastcliffe on Orakei and what are some of the social activities you enjoy? We attend Tai Chi twice each week and this helps to keep our minds and bodies healthy. Managing the residents’ bar is always interesting and rewarding. Taking part in The Residents’ Committee and the Entertainment Committee is also very worthwhile because, apart from the social side, it’s very gratifying to put something back rather than taking all the time. It’s a nice way to say thank you to the management and staff of Eastcliffe for the consistent efforts they put into making our lives easier and happy. Physical activities aside are there other hobbies or interests that you enjoy which Eastcliffe caters for. Perhaps you have taken up a new interest since moving there? Our situation is slightly different to most because we are still a couple. We use Eastcliffe as a base and nearly every day we travel out in the city and often visit Takapuna, Devonport, the museum and more. The real bonus is knowing that at the end of our trip(s) we can return to a clean, warm and dry apartment. The above mentioned makes our life interesting, but never boring.

8 | south | september 2018

South September 2018.indd 8

Di & Barry Mora What about the social life outside of the village – is there an opportunity to go to concerts, the theatre or to dine out at local restaurants or are you restricted in any way? There are daytime concerts which we attend, university and more. We often go privately in our own car to evening concerts in the city but we always enjoy coming home to our Eastcliffe apartment. We don’t feel restricted in any way.

Hazel Beale What is it about life at Eastcliffe that attracted you in the first place and has it lived up to your expectations, if so in what way?

How would you describe your apartment, and does it suit you your present lifestyle and time in life?

When we were considering going into a retirement village, Eastcliffe, its location locality and views, as well as the size and design of the townhouse available convinced us to come. We are very happy with our move to an apartment in the main building where we enjoy amazing views across the harbour.

I am so pleased I came to Eastcliffe more than 16 years ago. Life here has proved to be a wonderful experience for me. It is so comfortable, secure and warm, with great facilities and very caring staff. I never have to worry about anything. The harbour views are magnificent and it certainly is lovely to live in this apartment; rather like living in a 5-star hotel. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Retirement resort, Eastcliffe on Orakei enjoys one of the best locations in Auckland with stunning, northfacing views over Bastion Point to the Waitemata Harbour. Being close to the waterfront and Auckland’s CBD provides residents with many opportunities not available for retirees living far from attractive amenities such as Tamaki Drive, The Viaduct, Auckland Art Gallery, theatres and the War Memorial Museum. SOUTH asked residents what they especially loved about living at Eastcliffe.

Joan Macaulay As an active retiree who still enjoys exercise what does Eastcliffe offer in the way of physical activities and how do they meet your needs? • Athletic exercises on the TV screen to music • Aqua aerobics in the swimming pool • Well-equipped gymnasium • Tai Chi • Yoga I’m so lucky to have so much choice – it’s hard to decide which

to do. I finally opted for Tai Chi and the taped athletic exercises. They are both twice a week and I also spend 30 minutes in the pool and 10 minutes in the lovely hot spa one day a week. All these exercises take place here in the building and take only half an hour each. They are all most enjoyable and really do help to keep me fit and able to enjoy life in my mid-nineties! I’m so thankful that they are all available here at Eastcliffe on Orakei.

Going the tourist route You can’t go to Vanuatu and do nothing more than sunbathe at a resort especially if it’s raining, as it did on a few days when HELEN PERRY visited earlier this year. But rain or shine, she discovered that there was plenty to tempt Port Vila holidaymakers to explore the island of Efate. Sun, swimsuit, sarong was the plan. The reality? Rain, thunder, lightning. Did it spoil our Vanuatu holiday? Not a bit. Every day was full of surprises and if we were a little short on sunshine we weren’t short on warmth – the Ni-Vanuatu people showed us a great time. Before setting out from New Zealand I did my homework – talked to friends who have intimate knowledge of Vanuatu, read travel guides and went online for advice. Armed with a list of restaurants and attractions I planned to visit, this holiday timetable seemed a shoo-in. Did I manage it all? No. But what I did manage to see and sample has whet my appetite. On arrival we booked two major attractions, the first a personal driver to take four of us around the island of Efate’s ring road in his van (the most common form of transport in Port Vila – cheap and efficient). The second was a day with the crew of Congoola, a 23 metre timber ketch which I understand has been used by both the American and Australian TV series, Survivor. Our day included visiting Tranquillity Island Turtle Sanctuary on the nearby island of Moso followed by plenty of snorkelling plus a barbecue lunch on the other side of the island.

10 | south | september 2018

South September 2018.indd 10

It was also possible for nonswimmers to visit only the turtle sanctuary but we booked the day trip and fortunately struck one of two or three ‘fair weather’ days. Not sure what to expect of the Hawksbill Turtle Conservation Programme, I soon discovered any presumption of shiny stainless tanks, busy information centre and, perhaps, a café was way off mark. Operating on a shoestring (including donations from visitors) by a dedicated group, the set up was mostly simple concrete tanks combined with plenty of enthusiasm for saving the Hawksbill from extinction. We learned that 30-50 eggs are collected from each nest (leaving about 150 eggs to take nature’s course). The eggs are then hatched in the outdoor tanks where the young turtles are raised until they are about 15 months old before being released into the ocean. The water is kept fresh and clean; the turtles well fed. Hearing how much better their chances were of making it in the big wide ocean than that of their siblings left to their own defences, was heart-warming. What’s more, on this occasion Sydney-sider and keen conservationist, Nancy Sutton celebrated her birthday by paying 5000 vatu (about $NZ60) to release a turtle into the ocean – what a memory to treasure! Although too young for its sex to be determined, this little ‘ninja’ dubbed Nancy T, was carried gently by her sponsor to within metres of the water and set down. www.southmagazine.co.nz

30/08/2018 4:23:31 p.m.

WAKING UP TO

smell the coffee My morning caffeine kick is a highlight of the day. Before my eyes are fully open I’m shuffling to the kitchen for that first invigorating cuppa! Subsequently, while holidaying in Vanuatu, I was determined to visit the Tanna coffee roastery in Mele, a few kilometre outside central Port Vila – I found a small, basic operation, not what I expected but, boy, was the coffee good.

Sydney-sider, Nancy Sutton releases her ‘birthday girl’, Nancy T. The lapping of the sea apparently guides the turtle to the water, cementing a memory so, if it were a female, it would return to the same beach in a few years time to hatch her own eggs. There was no fanfare, just our small group applauding as brave little Nancy T, made her way into the ocean and swam into the deep. Now, we all hope that wasn’t the end of the story. All sanctuary turtles are tagged so if sighted, or should one return to the island, it will be monitored. Nancy (S) will also receive notification of any sightings of her ‘birthday girl’. The ketch then carried on to the other side of the island where we disembarked at a secluded cove. Confident swimmers were ferried out to the reef for snorkelling; others stayed closer to land either to spot sea life or just wallow in the water. A generous barbecue lunch completed the day.

ROUND THE ISLAND BY VAN The ring road around Efate might only be 122 kilometres, but prepare to spend a whole day exploring its treasures; there are plenty of reasons to stop and visitors often do more than one trip. On first stop was the Rarru Rentapao River falls and then to a nearby turtle farm where we saw examples of four shark species and also fed pawpaw, by hand, to some very big turtles – quite an experience. There was no real need to linger here for much more than 45 minutes although those stopping for a barbecue meal, needed more time. On the other hand, we could have spent several hours at the www.southmagazine.co.nz

South September 2018.indd 11

falls which were just beautiful. Wandering through the lush reserve (easy walking) we followed a series of small cascades, stopping to sample from the fresh fruit table – pawpaw, banana, melon, kiwifruit, mango, caramelised coconut (yum) and more. At the head of the falls walk was a large swimming hole, the water crystal clear and cold but ‘so refreshing’, said swimmers. We didn’t take the plunge which was such a pity but I’m determined to take my grandsons there; they would love it.

NO WINE JUST CHOCOLATE! So many people I spoke to had sung the praises of Vanuatu chocolate makers, Aelan so, on our ring road tour, this was a must for me. It wasn’t at all what I expected but, boy, that Aelan chocolate tasted good. At first, I thought this rural enterprise, run by a local Frenchwoman, was pretty much a cottage industry until I realised the chocolate produced was first class and going to a variety of markets. While our timing meant a full tour was not viable I did discover this fine, dark chocolate was crafted from native Vanuatu cacao beans, sourced from four different islands within the archipelago, using vintage grinding machinery. All the chocolate was 70 percent cacao beans but flavours definitely varied according to the beans used. What’s more it was very, very yummy with the coconut variety scoring big time. I brought home 10 cakes of chocolate and it didn’t last long! Continue on page 12

Located in what was more or less a huge shed with a café, and also a shop for the island’s famous Summit skin care products (I loaded up with those too), I wondered how successful this operation was. It turned out to be hugely successful. Without going into its history, Tanna has been a thriving business under the leadership of Australian, Terry Adlington since 1998. I learned that the beans come from Tanna Island where they are grown, picked and dry processed before the green beans are sent to Efate for roasting. At present, this is carried out by just a handful of staff (about eight) with production down because, in 2015, Cyclone Pam destroyed some 90 percent of Tanna’s coffee trees. It is a slow (but sure) job replanting and rebuilding. Compared to the 86 tonne of coffee beans produced in 2014 the eight tonne produced last year seems small but each year the team is driven to improve the output. I was so impressed by this whole enterprise and would love to visit the Tanna plantations when they start flourishing again. The resilience shown among workers everywhere since that catastrophic cyclone absolutely devastated much of Vanuatu, is something I saw everywhere and reminded me of Roy Ernst’s wise words. The Breakas Beach Resort food and beverage manager said: “Wealth to Ni Vans is life itself.” I felt impelled to help but also felt helpless as to what we could do. That’s why I am set on returning to Vanuatu – it has captured my heart and the coffee is so damn good!

Driving on As we journeyed along this road, funded, so I was given to understand, by the USA, we stopped briefly at various sites including the stunning Blue Lagoon, another favourite swimming spot and such a remarkable colour. No time to linger this trip but marked down for the future. We also passed small villages and saw remnants of former US military airfields as well as other indications of the Second World War presence of American troops. But I was aghast at how two plants, mikania micrantha (common names, mile-a-minute weed or American rope) and mirremia peltata (from the morning gory family, Convolvulaceae), introduced by the American army as camouflage, was so dense and widespread. It smothered native vegetation and I wondered how they could ever be eradicated for,

12 | south | september 2018

South September 2018.indd 12

indeed, these plants camouflaged everything. We had been urged to stop at the ‘WW2 Museum’ on route – I kept a keen lookout but had to laugh when we spotted a small roadside stall which, nevertheless, was packed with Second World War treasures including coke bottles galore from another era, each stamped with the State from where they originated – real collectables. I later learnt there was a ‘proper’ World War Museum (in a shed) on route which we missed altogether so more to see on our next trip…. and, yes, a next trip is in the pipeline. By time we reach The Havanna, a stunning adults-only resort at the high end of the tourist budget, it was well after 2pm and we were starving. Stopping for lunch, we all marvelled at the garden setting, elegant restaurant and water views. A satisfying lunch, served by waiters with impeccable manners, soon quelled the hunger pangs. Much as we would have lingered

longer, time was marching so we continued our journey, passing by the Tanna Coffee factory but there was no time to stop. Arriving back at our resort, it was 5pm. It had been a long but fascinating trip taking in one spectacular view after another. Our driver Tasso Simeon was an informative and cheerful tour guide who we continued to use for short

trips to town during our stay. I highly recommend taking a private van tour – cost around 15,000 Vatu for two people (roughly $160 for two) although this comes down per couple if sharing with others. The van was air conditioned (a must) and comfortable. I claimed front seat next to Tasso – such fun it was too and I’ve told him well be back. So, next trip, first stop Tasso’s van! www.southmagazine.co.nz

ELASTIC ISLAND ADVENTURES – PORT MUGALOO Port Mugaloo on MugaMuga Island may seem like a slice of paradise but there is more to this tropical destination that meets the eye. In the second book of her popular Elastic Island Adventures series, Karen McMillan’s intrepid heroes quickly discover that not everyone on this island is quite who they seem to be at first. Ideal for readers aged 8-12, the latest instalment in this series appears sure to entertain creative young minds.

SCHOOL READINESS AT FIRST STEPS WAIUKU Children’s curiosity about the world is boundless. BESTSTART EDUCARE is all about nurturing their capacity for learning. When children from First Steps Waiuku graduate and move on to primary school, their teachers know they leave with a wealth of knowledge and skills learnt in their preschool environment, and are ready to transition to their next stage of learning. First and foremost, children are prepared for school by being independent and confident with the fundamentals of looking after themselves. Preschool head teacher, Tanya Stevens, says a big part of being ready for school is understanding social and emotional behaviours and how to manage these by oneself. “We prepare the children with lessons that will help them in their future. We empower them through learning everyday skills such as looking after their belongings, treating each other with respect and encouraging self-help skills. As a

centre, this is what we foster.” Being familiar with routines such as mat time, and knowing how to relate to others, negotiating with others in group situations, sharing and taking turns are all skills which enable children to participate in group work.

All children learn in unique ways and develop at different ages. Teachers at First Steps Waiuku provide tailored, individual programmes to ensure each child learns in the way which is best for them, at their own pace and in their own time.

Time to party?

Put your finger on the ‘Pulse’ especially small gatherings, when it comes to a wedding, corporate affairs or a product launch, we can also set up the theme if required. It’s about working with clients to achieve an outstanding result.”

You don’t have to be rich and famous to have a great party but when a touch of glamour is called for, twin company, Pulse Party Hire and Themes by Design in Papakura can turn on something exceptional to make guest feel like stars.

Whether supplying the makings of a successful party – be it birthday, anniversary, Christmas social or New Year shindig – or going that step further to dress the theme too, Chris says the challenge is to be original and meet the client’s brief.

Chris Archibald and her team are skilled and experienced at creating events which simply dazzle – everything from weddings and corporate dinners to school balls, product launches, anniversaries, birthdays and more.

What’s more, when it comes to company events, Chris says corporate colours generally come into play with massed balloon displays popular for virtually any event.

“We’ve set the scene for hundreds of different events,” says Chris. “It’s all about creating unforgettable celebrations that embrace the hosts’ special interests and which put everyone in the party mood.”

Regardless of whether a client wants straight up party hire equipment or a commissioned theme, Pulse Party Hire and Themes by Design are up for it.

Now, with summer on its way, outdoor entertaining and the wedding season come to the fore and while there are a myriad of ways to celebrate, the New Zealand “do-it-yourself” attitude remains a force. “These days people look for something special – a theme, style of food, an activity, entertainment and fabulous decorations – to mark their party as different and personal,” Chris says. “This applies to small scale events in a suburban garden right up to marquee status on the 10-acre lifestyle block or hiring a venue to be personalised by family and friends. “That’s where our Pulse Party Hire arm comes into its own. It’s no longer a case of grabbing a couple of boxes of glasses, some extra cutlery and a folding table or two

In the celebration business since 1997, Chris was the original, longtime owner of PartyBiz in Manukau.

with a happy birthday banner. “People decorate in style; they want co-ordinated colours, serving dishes, punch bowls, greenery, flowers, balloons and all the extra trimmings to create a fun theme.” As to inventiveness, Chris says she is amazed at clients’ enthusiasm for “going the whole hog.” “The entrance to any event is always significant and we have created everything from a Lord of the Rings Hobbiton setting through to Avatar

fantasies while Hollywood red carpets and Rock ‘n’ Roll pizzazz are just a couple of our most popular themes.” Of course, when it comes to weddings, Pulse has everything from teaspoons to the marquees including stunning table settings, matching chair covers, centrepieces for the tables and accessories of every type. “Although clients will often decorate their own events,

“I still love this field of work and although every function is different, I’m passionate about delivering an unforgettable special occasion every time,” she says. “Seeing clients delight, if such a pleasure.”

Holiday care As summer advances, school and Christmas holidays will be on the mind of many people including those with pets. It may seem early days but it is important to book pets into catteries, kennels and pet hotels as soon as possible – space fills up fast with some people making Christmas bookings a year out.

appear content? Importantly do you ‘connect’ with the owners? Ensure special diets and medications can be accommodated and if your pet has a special toy or cuddly rug ask if it can stay with your pet.

Staff at most boarding facilities are accustomed to dealing with animals of all temperaments but it is important to point out any eccentricities or special behaviours to pet carers.

Boarding facilities may have single occupant accommodation, shared accommodation and/or communal space.

If you are placing a dog in kennels, ask if daily exercise is included in the care programme and if there are separate areas for large and small dogs – this is often preferred by both owners and carers.

The big advantage of using a boarding facility is peace of mind – your pet will receive regular meals, medication if required, have people (and sometimes other animal) contact and will be in a safe secure unit. Importantly there is no need to rely on help from family or neighbours.

Be sure the accommodation suits your pet and make sure the facility is close to home – cats in particular can find it stressful travelling in cars. If your pet takes medication place it in a container with the cats name, your phone number and clear instructions on its use.

Importantly, don’t forget to ensure pet vaccinations are up to date well in advance of your holiday – many places require annual vaccinations to have been done at least six weeks before a pet is admitted. De-flea and de-worm too.

Most pet boarding facilities welcome inspection so make an appointment to visit first, Once there, ask yourself is it clean, sweet-smelling and do the animals

The same applies if your pet requires a special diet. With very fragile pets, a boarding facility attached to a veterinary practice may be the best option.

So, if planning a holiday, book your pet into a boarding facility as soon as possible thus avoiding worries about their safety, care and well being while you are away.

LES DOG PARK RU

Dog parks are becoming more common in this country and are the perfect place for your loyal companion to exercise and socialise with other dogs off the leash. For the experience to be safe and enjoyable for everyone involved, it’s important to follow some basic rules. If you’d like to be a model dog park user during your next outing, here are some recommendations: • Make sure that your dog has been dewormed, is up to date on its vaccines and is wearing a valid ID tag. • Don’t enter the park if your dog seems nervous or overexcited. • Always stay in the section of the park where there are dogs the same size as yours (some parks keep large and small breeds separate). • Be aware of your surroundings and supervise your pet at all times to ensure he doesn’t attack another dog (or gets attacked). • Always pick up your dog’s droppings and dispose of them in the designated receptacle. If there is none, take with you, ensure it is securely wrapped and disposed of in a rubbish bin or at home. • Don’t throw a ball or other toy to your dog if other animals are nearby. • Leave the dog park immediately if your pet starts acting fearful or aggressive.

Unsafe food for pets

One little piggy may have gone to market and shopped up a storm but goodies meant for the human table are mostly a bad idea for pets. However, we all know pets can be devious and given the chance are likely to steal baking from the benchtop, meat from the table and even rummage through the rubbish for a tasty snack. These are behaviours to discourage as human food can cause pancreatitis and kidney disease in pets. If your pet does gobble down food meant for its owners, and shows signs of vomiting or weakness, call your vet immediately.

ODS TO AVOID O F E M O S E R A HERE excessive panting, vomiting, diarrhoea, abnormal heartbeat, seizures and even death. A standard 200g block of chocolate has the potential to cause death in a dog.

• Grapes and raisins – these can cause kidney failure and even small amounts can be fatally toxic. Watch for vomiting, diarrhoea or dehydration. • Nuts – such as macadamias and mouldy walnuts can cause toxic poisoning while almonds and pistachios can cause an upset stomach or an obstruction.

• Fatty foods and trimmings – can cause pancreatic inflammation while raw fish and meat can result in food poisoning such as salmonella.

• Onion and garlic – can result in diarrhoea and vomiting and, in severe cases, damage and loss of red blood cells. It only takes a small amount to poison a cat or a dog.

Remember, too, that bones can splinter and cause obstructions or lacerations and fruit stones can also result in obstructions. Corn cobs can cause gastrointestinal obstructions.

• Alcohol – can cause seizures and respiratory failures. Watch for small amounts of alcohol hidden in desserts, sauces and even yeast in raw dough.

So, be sure to keep rubbish bags/bins firmly sealed and away from pets; train pets to stay away from kitchen surfaces/benchtops where there may be food and, if you do have items such as pizza around, which a dog might be likely to snaffle, be sure it isn’t topped with onion and garlic.

• Chocolate – contains theobromine which can cause

Three benefits of

t a c a g n i t p o d a

Keen to expand your family by adopting a cat? Here are a few ways a feline companion could benefit your life. AFFECTION: Cats may be on the independent side, but that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy giving and receiving affection. Whenever you need a bit of love, your cat will be there for pets and scratches and purrs. A win-win for both of you! EDUCATION: Having a furry friend to take care of will teach your children about responsibility. Depending on their age, children could be in charge of feeding, grooming or litter box duties.

HAPPINESS: Studies have shown that having a pet cat increases dopamine and serotonin levels in all members of the household. Both of these hormones are associated with — you guessed it! — feelings of happiness and well being. There’s many an appealing mature puss in need of help so why not adopt an adult cat from a shelter. They’re much less popular than kittens but are often easy to settle, are already house trained and generally make wonderful companions. Remember, too, kittens grow up eventually anyway!

CHOOSING A CAT TREE Not every cat owner thinks about a cat tree but it could be the makings of your pet. In addition to letting puss climb and jump to his/her heart’s content, a cat tree provides a raised spot for puss to relax and watch over its territory in peace. There are many styles to choose from although a multi-level refuge

for your feline companion could be just the thing. Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect cat climbing tree. • Choose a model that’s tall enough — at least three feet — and includes different platforms and surfaces to climb. Your cat

will love being able to jump from level to level to reach the top! • Stability is another important factor. Choose a cat tree with a solid base which adequately supports the structure in a way that prevents it from tipping over.

• Choose a cat tree which doubles as a scratching post, and make sure the model you choose includes a cosy place where your pet can hide and snooze without being disturbed. Finally, if possible, place it near a window so your cat can see what’s going on in the outside world.

David Quinlan –

It’s a murky winter’s morning with a thick, grey fog hanging over rural Franklin. But the inside of David Quinlan’s studio is awash with vibrant, (almost) living, colour. Professionally, David made a name for himself in the architecture game before retiring in 2010. A University of Liverpool graduate, he moved to New Zealand after being head-hunted by notable firm, Opus. However, his career’s work has influenced his artistic style; in architectural design, as in art, even seemingly empty spaces need to add value or meaning.

the art of construction

“I think [my career] has benefited my art in terms of the way I look at space. In architecture I looked for simple solutions because they tended to work better; that applies to art, too. With both, I look for pattern and structure, with a lot of technique involved to achieve the effect I’m trying to create.”

and encouraging me to do the same,” he recalls. “I thought about going to art college fulltime when I was a teenager – I had been attending classes on Saturdays – but the family concern was that the only way I could make a living from art is if I became a teacher, and I didn’t want to be a teacher.”

Born in Suffolk, David grew up surrounded by art; his mother and grandfather were both keen painters.

A fan of the French impressionists – with a particular penchant for the works of Monet and Van Gogh – David draws using pencil and charcoal as well as watercolours (on occasion), most often finishing his paintings in oils.

“I remember holidays sitting on the beach with my mother sketching

“I have a gift, which I recognised at an early age, and I’ve always enjoyed using and exploiting it. It’s become so much a part of me that, whenever I look at anything, I’m thinking how it could come across in a painting,” he says.“I don’t like putting labels on my art as it’s a constantly evolving process. I think it’s really more important for others to look at my work and [decide for themselves] where they think inspiration is coming from for a particular piece.” Whether painting people or his surroundings, David faces similar www.southmagazine.co.nz

this is due to demand rather than a need to sustain his bank balance.

“With portraits, you’re trying to unwrap and present the subject’s personality. But I also enjoy the colours and the almost infinite variety that landscapes present – the same landscape will look different minute to minute as clouds move and the light changes.”

“The way the arts are today, I’d probably be starving in a garage – similar to the old impressionists – if I was trying to make a living from it! It’s so unpredictable, but I cover my costs and, from time to time, do a little better. I think it’s good that the arts are being talked about more these days. When we live in a very high tech world, art enriches life significantly [and] expands the mind.”

His paintings have featured in a number of solo exhibitions, primarily in Auckland, and although he produces prints of his work,

No stranger to accolades, David

says recognition by one’s peers can certainly prove beneficial in art as in architecture – in 2009, his team at Opus claimed the prestigious Architecture Gold Medal. “Professionally, such awards are hugely important for architects because they build credibility in the industry,” he says. “With art, it depends on how high profile the award is, but it certainly can [prove beneficial].” Although he did not enter this year’s Franklin Arts Festival (on until September 9), David has done

so in the past. “[Judging] is just such a hugely subjective process that no two people will have exactly the same view. When someone sees a painting they like, they’ll want to buy it, whether it’s won an award or not. An award is really a pleasant by-product of the work.”

and enjoy the flavour

The first bite of new Castello® Marquis is truly something to be savoured, its milky and buttery taste featuring notes of tropical fruit and green peppers derived from its natural, red smear on the rind and the albino blue mould inside. As Marquis matures, the taste and flavour of the red smear sharpens slightly, while the cheese itself gains more character. Its unique production method means the mould culture develops from the inside of the cheese, and the red smear does so from the outside, offering a creamy consistency. Castello® Marquis (RRP $11.99) pairs beautifully with grapes, a glass of red wine or beer but why not try this delicious recipe?

Preparation

Sole:

Ingredients

Cheese sauce:

Cheese Sauce: • 25g butter • 2 Tbsp plain flour • 3 cups milk • 100g Castello Marquis cut into small cubes • ½ tsp salt • freshly ground pepper • 300g cleaned fresh spinach leaves

Melt the butter in a pan over high heat, but without browning. Add in the flour and stir it for approx 2 minutes. Whisk the milk, adding it in little by little.

Clean the fish. Halve the fillets lengthwise and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Fold the fish fillets together, with the skin-sides facing inward. Arrange spinach and mushrooms mixture in the bottom of four small oven dishes (approx 20cm in diameter).

Mushrooms: • 25g butter • 2 finely chopped yellow onions (about 125g) • 300g of button or chopped Portobello mushrooms • 1 tsp salt • freshly ground pepper Sole: • 4 skinless sole fillets (approx 500g) • ¼ tsp salt • freshly ground pepper • 2 Tbsp breadcrumbs

Cook the sauce while stirring for approx 5 minutes. Add the Castello Marquis cheese, salt and pepper. Rinse spinach leaves in cold water and place them in a saucepan. Steam them over a high heat for approx two minutes. Put them in a sieve to drain any water. Mushrooms: Melt the butter over high heat, but without browning. Sauté the onions for about one minute. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper and fry over a high heat for about six minutes, stirring occasionally.

Place a fish in each over dish and pour the cheese sauce over it. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Set the small oven dishes on the oven tray and grill in the middle of the oven for approx seven minutes at 225°C. Turn on the top grill and move the oven tray up to the top of the oven for approx two minutes or until golden. Serve immediately. Note: A side of gourmet potatoes oven baked in their skins, then halved and tossed with butter and asparagus goes well with this dish.

Heart and craft reshapes lives Maree Kay’s business scrapbook dates back to 1985, many of the cuttings advertisements for lingerie brands and stores which have long disappeared. However, HELEN PERRY discovered Maree’s Papakura shop of the past 26 years is very much a presence attracting not only local custom but clients from all over New Zealand and Australia, too. Maree Louise Underfashions sits unobtrusively among a cluster of retailers in the heart of Papakura. It’s been there 26 years but is no ordinary underwear shop. That’s because for decades, owner and corsetiere, Maree Kay has specialised in catering for breast cancer patients fitting them with a prosthesis after a mastectomy. Her particular service requires understanding and sensitivity, compassion and encouragement. “When women come in for that first prosthesis six weeks after their operation they are pretty vulnerable,” Maree says. “But what joy when they leave with a well-made, properly fitted prosthesis; it’s a real confidence booster which also comes with some tears, usually of relief. We always have tissues and plenty of hugs handy.” Maree says for many years she was accustomed to clients saying, ‘you have no idea what it’s like’. “And, despite my cousin and my grandmother both having had mastectomies, I would think to myself, ‘they are so right, I don’t know’.” But then came the day when Maree did know. She was diagnosed with breast cancer 27 years ago at the age of 50. “Prior to that friends would say ‘and, what would you do if you found you had breast cancer?’ I’d reply, ‘well, they’re not cutting off my breast’. But, you know, when I did learn the bad news, I couldn’t get to hospital fast enough.” Like her clients Maree’s bras are fitted with prostheses and nobody would know. However, she is adamant there are few places that carry out the job like her staff, Robyn Haines, who has worked with her for the best part of 14 years and machinist, June Brown and part timer, Dianne French.

28 | south | september 2018

South September 2018.indd 28

“The easy way is to just slip the prosthesis into a specially designed pocket in the bra but if this isn’t stitched into place the prosthesis can ride up and become uncomfortable. “The weight difference on either side must also be taken into account; it requires bra straps to be at variable lengths. Failing to make the adjustment can result in sideways slip. “Fortunately, June is a wonderful machinist, and Robyn is highly skilled so every prosthesis fitted here goes out properly adjusted and stitched into place.” Maree says sadly, her trade is slipping away through lack of training and interest. “There’s no real training of the sort I had and young women today don’t see this as a career but if they did they would find it so rewarding. “On the other hand, my granddaughter has been working here with me on Saturdays and learning such a lot. It is lovely to see her genuine interest and her compassion for our clients.” In addition to her retail business, Maree also supplies the Manukau Super Clinic with temporary soft dacron prostheses free of charge. “When women leave the clinic after a mastectomy, the wound is still tender and a permanent prosthesis cannot be fitted for six weeks. But no one likes feeling lopsided – it does affect balance – or leaving with clothing that clearly shows the absence of a breast. These temporary prostheses, which we make here, just fit inside a regular bra to assist with balance and looks.” Despite still working six days a week Maree is reluctant to take time off – “I’ll just keep on going. I don’t think about the future. There are too many women who still need Maree Louise.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

corsetry career – no easy road Corsetieres aren’t what they used to be maintains Maree Kay, whose career in the lingerie business began in 1958.

“I also used my taxi, a black Valiant, for weddings and that was always a pleasant change.”

After growing up in Oratia, West Auckland, she left school and at 15 was working in the corsetry department at the former George Court department store in Karangahape Rd.

As time went by Maree and her family returned to Auckland and in 1978 bought a dairy in Rawhiti Road, One tree Hill. “Later we bought the shop next door and that was a mixed bag – books, haberdashery and woollens!”

“In those days there was corsetry and there was underwear; the departments were entirely separate. The word lingerie didn’t really come in until a few years later.” As part of her employment Maree attended an intensive two week training course as a corsetiere at the nearby Berlei School, Berlei being a leading lingerie company in its day with the brand still surviving today. But anyone who thought this would be the end of the story – corsetiere then, corsetiere now – has probably never known, or has forgotten, the whims that can take a young woman adventuring. Two years into her job Maree and friend “decided to leave home”. “When I say ‘home’ I mean Auckland. I was living at the YWCA hostel in Queen Street when my friend and I thought Wellington was the place for us. So, off we went. “My first job there was at Adams Bruce and what an eye opener it was; the girls just weren’t as genteel as those behind the counter at George Courts and it took some adjusting. As a result it wasn’t long before I was back in corsetry this time at long time Wellington department store, Kirkcaldie & Staines.”

“When women come in for that first prosthesis six weeks after their operation they are pretty vulnerable,” Maree says. “But what joy when they leave with a well-made, properly fitted prosthesis; it’s a real confidence booster which also comes with some tears, usually of relief. We always have tissues and plenty of hugs handy.”

The next few years brought marriage, children and a fresh career – driving taxis. “I had the opportunity to buy a Wellington taxi so I did, working it parttime while my two boys were young. It was very different from today. “Women weren’t allowed to work at night; we were restricted to the hours between 1 hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunsets. The problem was that at 8pm all the men knocked off for dinner and there was hardly a taxi on the road!” Although Maree soon moved into admin’ at the taxi company she says she enjoyed the driving especially in an era when there were few problem customers.

With the break-up of her first marriage, Maree started again returning to her stock and trade – corsetry, working first as underwear buyer at Milnes, Remuera, and then as buyer in the corsetry department of the former Rendells chain. “I then did a stint at Natural Wear, the company which initially brought in prostheses from the USA. This sparked an interest and in 1986 I set up my own shop in Onehunga Mall. “That was a time when truly beautiful lingerie was made here in New Zealand and there were shops such as the former Bennett & Bain dealing solely in underwear and nightwear; all very feminine and romantic. “I was doing okay until the local mayor turned the main street into a mall. Farmers [department store] left Onehunga and business generally died. Eventually I closed the shop.” Although she remained working in the industry, including for a time at Gardner Fashions in Pukekohe where she met her now assistant Robyn Haines, Maree was keen to have her own shop. In 1992 she found premises on Great South Rd in Papakura and the, two years later, moved into the shop next door. “I’ve been here ever since continuing to watch the evolving face of lingerie and underwear in New Zealand. Fabrics and styles have changed, mostly for the better and there is an ever-increasing variety or under garments. Night wear has become more practical and some pieces can even double as daywear.’ But Maree’s heart is in her work with breast cancer patients and survivors. Every element of her fitting service is focused on boosting their self-esteem and making them comfortable not only with their new prosthesis but with their body. “The best reward is seeing these women survive and take on life again with vigour and conviction. I wouldn’t swap that pleasure for anything.”

New season, new hair This month TEREZE TABER talks about how to bring back bounce to your hair this spring at Vivo Hair Manukau. Winter is finally over and spring is evident in yellow and white daffodils all around us! We are so excited to put cold, winter days behind us, so it’s safe to say we have a little ‘spring’ in our step. But, what’s the best way to celebrate? One word: shopping! A new season means new clothes, new tan and, of course, fresh, new hair. There’s only one place for all our spring needs, and that’s Westfield Manukau, a major shopping haven in South Auckland. That’s because all the brands we love are there, and wherever there’s buzz, there’s Vivo Hair Salon.

Vein specialists

In fact, we love Westfield Manukau so much that we have two salons in the mall, one on the ground level and one tucked up on the Level 1 Mezzanine.

Our Vivo Level 1 Mezzanine salon has recently welcomed some new talent giving South Auckland residents even more reason to visit Westfield Manukau. To celebrate its growth, the salon has an exclusive offer for new clients: our talented stylists will pamper them with a cut, Olaplex treatment and style finish for just $69.

have your hair looking fresher than a daisy. You might have heard that Olaplex is the latest miracle cure on the hair and beauty circuit. Lauded by celebs and hair professionals alike, it stands out against the myriad of other hair treatments for one big reason: Olaplex works, powerfully! That’s because it is a carefully developed formula, created by scientists to focus on the bond repair process, the main reason why hair will look either damaged or healthy. Hair which has been damaged through chemical process, environmental damage or heat styling must go through a laborious, natural process to repair itself. Olaplex steps in and move things along at a rapid pace, resulting in healthy, strong hair in no time at all. It’ll make your hair bouncier than a lamb in springtime! To see for yourself how Olaplex can help you take a spring break from bad hair, book your appointment with Vivo Manukau Level 1 by calling on 09 262 3191 and take advantage of this exclusive deal (offer available until the end of October 2018). Looking back on 80 years o Despite today’s talk of housing shortages and crises in the construction industry, one company has maintained a and eight decade tradition of providing sound homes for everyday families which, despite the founder’s name, haven’t be blown away by the occasional ‘wolf’ at the door!

It was the year 1938 – one year out from the outbreak of the Second World War and nearing the end of the decade-long 1930’s Depression – perhaps not the best time for people to be thinking about building a new home. Yet one enterprising man didn’t see it that way at all. A young Keith Hay – later hailed as an innovator in the home construction business – established Keith Hay Homes, pioneering a new era of low-cost, prefabricated, transportable housing in New Zealand. Today, as its celebrates its 80th anniversary, the company is still family-owned and operated with Keith Hay’s son, David Hay, managing director, and David’s daughter and son, Roseanne and Matthew, also working in the business. Matthew is general manager of Keith Hay Homes and directs the executive team which is focused on the development of the company and its product range. After 45 years with Keith Hay Homes, David says: “Looking back on the business as a whole

South September 2018.indd 32

Keith Hay leaves a rich legacy. I guess you can say it’s been 80 years of helping New Zealanders into homes, 80 years of innovation in the building industry, 80 years of employing Kiwis and working with local, regional and national sub-contractors/suppliers and, of course, 80 years of riding construction waves as a NZ-owned and operated family business.” “I believe this milestone is worthy of nostalgic reflection, plus represents an opportune time to consider the contribution we can make to the future of the New

Zealand building industry.”

several decades of going bigger.

And, indeed, Keith Hay has left a rich legacy – his homes (and many other buildings) can be found in suburbs across the country.

What’s more, the need for prefabricated homes is seen by some as a way to meet the current demand for affordable housing.

In particular, many of today’s baby boomers will have fond memories of their first home, perhaps in the 1960s or 70’s, being a Keith Hay home. They were often three bedrooms, one bathroom, lounge plus kitchen/dining and separate laundry – not too different from what is again in demand after

From the outset, prefabrication was key at Keith Hay Homes and David expects it will play an integral role in shaping the future of the New Zealand building industry. “Dad saw the sense of low-cost prefabricated houses which could be transported from the Keith Hay www.southmagazine.co.nz

rs of home building success of timber which could be nailed quickly,” David says. However, through the 1950s, Keith had to fight the conservatism of local councils and building societies to make building with pine permissible. He was also an innovator in speeding up production methods, cutting labour costs, and incorporating plastics and other new materials into home construction. “This was viewed favourably and, of course, the business also created jobs for Kiwis,” adds David. Currently operating in 10 locations across New Zealand, the company’s wide product range includes first homes, minor dwellings, farm accommodation, family homes, investment/rental properties, holiday/lifestyle homes, classrooms and commercial, tourism and office buildings. Its head office remains in Mt Roskill where it has been since 1953.

Today, these homes are as popular as ever and I believe even more relevant especially when the housing crises has seen many low and middle income families partially shut out of the market yet in dire need of affordable housing.” David says in the late 1940’s, his father won a tender to relocate an American army camp from the Auckland Domain to Panmure by using the novel method of shifting the buildings in large sections instead of dismantling them.

“New Zealand’s desperate housing shortage after the war [Second World War] provided an opening for an innovative approach,” he explains.

more affordable, especially in major cities, it stands to reason prefabricated homes would be a relatively quick and sensible housing solution for families.

“Keith Hay was at the fore of developing house shifting trailers and winches on rubber-tyred tractors. As a result, constructing houses in a central assembly yard then transporting them to suburban locations offered easy access to a new home.”

Keith Hay was also instrumental in transforming home construction through the use of native timbers, new materials and new production methods.

Keith Hay was honoured with a CBE. in 1977 and was posthumously inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame for his contribution to the building industry. He is also remembered for his staunch Christian principles, his contribution to local body politics – he was Mayor of Mt Roskill Borough from 1953 to 1974 and later served on the former Auckland Regional Council – and in helping form the Coalition of Concerned Citizens. He passed away in 1997.

What’s your

style? MURRAY AND DEBBIE GARLAND, Signature Homes Papakura/Franklin offer advice on choosing your style of home

Contemporary – If you love the look of modern materials, simple shapes and clean lines, a contemporary home is for you.

There are a number of considerations. If the business is purchased, then it is possible by agreement to have a clean ‘cut off’ point where the business assets become the unencumbered property of the purchaser and the vendor deals with the debts and liabilities of the business incurred up to the ‘cut off’ point.

Classic – This style of home has a heritage feel which will always be timeless. A classic home is also extremely versatile as it’s equally suitable for a lifestyle block, sleepy country town or an urban suburb.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT WHEN CHOOSING YOUR HOME STYLE?

Kevin House is the senior Commercial Partner at Franklin Law. Kevin has extensive expertise advising company directors, shareholders and partners in areas of business structures, trust and tax law, asset and business planning. When looking to buy a company’s business enterprise there are often two options: 1. B uy the business from the vendor company; or 2. Buy the shares from the vendor company owner.

Coastal – We Kiwis love our lakes, rivers and beaches and a home on the water is a dream for many of us. A durable, easy-care home with big, beautiful windows will be perfect.

European – The New Zealand landscape is so diverse that borrowing architectural ideas from around the world often makes sense. Our love affair with Tuscan and Spanish houses is ongoing and these styles can offer easy living with great connection to the outdoors.

Do you buy the business or buy the shares?

Your style – Think about your personal taste and how objects and furniture will fit your new home. What is your vision for the interior and which house will best suit it? Landscape – Consider what type of house suits your location and section, and also takes best advantage of the view, sun orientation and wind.

Size – What size home will best suit your family? Consider storage, bedrooms, bathrooms, room sizes and living areas.

The future – Think about how your family might change, grow or shrink and research what technologies are likely to be common in our homes. Prepare for tomorrow!

Function – Think about what you like to do in your home, e.g entertain, work, study, individual hobbies and family time.

For further information ensure you contact one of our team today on 0800 828822 or email garland@signature.co.nz.

Any variations such as collection and accounting for monies owed to the business prior to the ‘cut off’ point can be dealt with by the agreement. Likewise, there needs to be provisions dealing with termination or continuation of staff arrangements, use of names, web sites, telephone and communications used by the business, transfer of leases and long term supply contracts etc to ensure preservation of goodwill and continuity of the business. There is generally a need to change bank accounts, advise suppliers of the new ownership and enter into new supply agreements, deal with customers etc, so the process is reasonably intensive at and around the ‘cut off’ point. The principal advantage is that the purchaser starts off with a clean slate. If the decision is to buy the shares, the initial inconvenience is generally less. The company ownership of the business continues with new management but all the ongoing aspects of the business operation can largely be left in place, subject to any

HOUSE & LAND PACKAGES AVAILABLE NOW

necessary consents from suppliers and landlords. The real potential downside for a purchaser is that any company liabilities remain with the company and therefore indirectly may adversely affect the value of the shares benefit to the purchaser. Disclosed liabilities are not so much a problem as those which are unknown and which relate to previous trading but which surface after the change of share ownership. The usual way risk is covered is by comprehensive warranties by the share vendor in the agreement but those usually contain a maximum liability cap and a time limit on making claims. Any warranty is only as good as the substance of the party giving it so there are risks above those applying to a business purchase which always need to be weighed up against the convenience of leaving the existing business structure largely in place. The final decision is a matter of negotiation between the parties and then an agreement which adequately deals with the relevant issues, so there are no unexpected surprises for the purchaser. The information contained in this paper is necessarily of a generalised nature and specific advice should be sought in relation to any particular situation.

Filtering out allergens When former engineer John Wadsworth invented his Unovent® home ventilation system some four years ago, he wanted a simpler, less expensive system than those already on the market. The former Honeywell New Zealand managing director sat down and thought ‘we need a ventilation system but I’m not spending $4000 on one’. Subsequently, John came up with a small, all-in-one vent and fan operated by a 12 volt lightweight

power cable connecting a number of units in each living space, its installation no more complicated than fitting down lights. Pulling dry air from the roof cavity the system mixed it with the wetter air in the bedrooms, lounge and dining room, reducing the moisture content in the living areas. It also reduced condensation on the windows and the amount of moisture absorbed into wall coverings, drapes and carpets which can otherwise lead to mould

and mildew, key triggers for asthma and allergies.

performing New Zealand sheep wool fibres.

Now, the company has fitted the new more powerful Unovent® PollenGuard™ Helix™ Filter to the system in order to help fight allergies.

While air pollution is not a major concern in New Zealand, the number of people who suffer from respiratory allergies, such as hay fever and asthma, is high. The new filter helps reduce the effect of these by capturing invisible airborne particles entering the ventilation outlets in rooms.

Scientifically developed and tested, this industrial grade filter, developed and manufactured in New Zealand, captures smaller, potentially harmful particles in the air – pollen, dust mites, spores, pollution – through high-

The filter can be added to existing Unovent® ventilation systems, and to newly purchased kit sets.

1. People may not need your product or service today, but they may need it tomorrow. 2. Frequency builds trust. 3. Frequent advertising adds credibility to your message. 4. When an advert is seen frequently, it gets the consumer yearning for your service and they will take action to buy it. 5. Advertising frequently helps put your name out in front of the competition’s. 6. Frequency is the best way to get lower advertising rates. 7. Advertising frequently is a lot like repeatedly inviting a friend to come see you. One day, they are bound to visit! 8. Frequent advertising helps you build a steady source of incoming sales. 9. Out of sight, out of mind. 10. You make more money when you do! It’s plain and simple.

Moisture from shower steam will fog mirrors, and leave walls and ceilings damp, the perfect place for fungus and bacteria to grow. However, a dry, warm house is also a healthy house and Showerdome® can help control steam, reduce condensation and make the house healthier and warmer. Showerdome® is a clear acrylic dome that simply attaches to the shower cubicle top to prevent steam forming in the bathroom. Steam occurs when warm, moist air mixes with cold air, so the dome acts as a barrier between the two air masses, preventing steam from forming in the shower or bathroom. Mould and mildew are caused by humidity, and can result in a range of allergies, eczema, inflammations and respiratory discomfort. Mould and dust mites have been

identified as two common causes of allergies, and both can result from moisture and dampness. Of course, combating such problems can add to the household upkeep bill. According to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), the average shower releases 1.5 litres of moisture into the air. In a home of four people, this represents 6 litres being released into the air daily. To prevent this, the EECA recommends putting a lid on shower cubicles to avoid dampness. Another major safety concern related to moisture is slippery floors, as bathroom falls are among the leading causes of accidents at home. Apart from health benefits, safety and comfort, Showerdome® helps save on gas and electricity. It costs about $299 with a further $135 for installation. Visit www.showerdome.co.nz

Smith & Sons Pukekohe owners, LANE and MELISSA VAN DEN BRINK know how important it is for a home to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Their advice is designed to guide homeowners smoothly through the renovation process. Over the past few months we have been discussing what to think about before embarking on a renovation. A major consideration is always budget and what you want to spend. In some cases, it comes down to what you can get done on your wish list based on the money you have. Here, we share some examples of what can be achieved on different budgets, based on our past experiences with projects we have completed. Every renovation is different and a makeover of $10,000 at one house could cost $20,000 at another; it will depend on which fittings you choose and the size and age of the property. • $30,000 – you could get a full bathroom makeover, this would include stripping the entire bathroom back to the framing, new gib, new flooring, tiled walls, new bathroom fittings, painted and finished to a top quality finish. Or you could swap out the kitchen cabinets and all the appliances. • $50,000 – this could get you an entire new kitchen layout, maybe add a scullery, new floor coverings and appliances. You may want your kitchen more open plan so this could be achieved by knocking out a wall or two. If it is a buy and flip property you could

No shake, rattle or roll Motoring correspondent ALISTAIR DAVIDSON checks out ZB Commodore’s LT diesel offering. ZB Commodore would have to be one of the most controversial, polarising new vehicles launched this year. Front-wheel drive only, no V8, no manual gearbox, no sedan, and no Aussie build have fans of previous Commodores crying into their schooners of frosty XXXX. Holden reckons its Opel Insignia based ZB is targeting a new buyer: younger, more tech savvy, and wanting a premium product. ZB Commodore has a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane keep assist are standard on LT. Photo Alistair Davidson

This new Commodore is the right tool for that job as the entire range is refined, loaded with safety and comfort features, performs well, and handles safely and predictably. However, it’s competing in a small, tough market which is packed with excellent, well established players. That’s a tough road to hoe.

WHEN IT

GENCY

In another bold move, Holden NZ has just introduced a dieselpowered Commodore. Front-drive and now a diesel, that’s bordering on sacrilege. Or is it? Launching Commodore diesel at a time when its competitors are abandoning oil burners in passenger cars (as opposed to SUVs) is either a brilliant idea, or sheer folly.

SOUTH spent a week with a LT Liftback diesel which, at $48,990, commands a $3000 price premium over LT petrol. Holden also offers a diesel LT Sportwagon version at $50,990. Because LT is the entry level Commodore, Holden is hedging its bets with the diesel. There’s nothing ‘base model’ about the LT specification so it should appeal to private buyers, yet the price point and diesel engine also make it an attractive fleet proposition.

You know what? It might just be the

On the subject of frugality, Holden claims that the LT diesel is more economical that the petrol version by almost two-litres per 100km, 5.6 litres compared with 7.4 litres. SOUTH couldn’t match that, recording 7.9 average over a week of rural and city driving which is best described as ‘steady, with the occasional acceleration test’.

The diesel is remarkably quiet and refined; and with all that lovely torque available low in the engine’s rev range, it pulls like a locomotive. The diesel models have an eightspeed automatic, one gear less than the petrol equivalent. Does that really matter? Nope. What does matter is that the shifts are virtually seamless.
