Editor says... Unimpressed by our mayoral candidates, and totally out of sorts over the lack of any real moves to protect our prime horticultural land (other than the Government’s recent announcement and we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out), I’m feeling uninspired by the upcoming elections. Nevertheless, I’ll try to do my duty by God and the council although only the Almighty knows who I will vote for because I certainly don’t. And, with that I’ll leave the bluster to the candidates and the politicians; they’re good at that. In the meantime, October has heralded in daylight saving and I’m delighted. I know the mornings will be darker for a while but I do love the extended daylight hours at night – although higher temperatures and sunny days are still spasmodic, I’m sure we’ll be barbecuing for dinner in no time. With the better weather I’m also thinking of small escapes – Sydney first – hurrah! I love a wine down on the harbour at the Opera Bar and I’m off to my favourite jewellery shop for silver earrings – clip style; you just can’t find them here.

I also have a weekend coming up in Christchurch – making good on my promise to return there in the spring after a quick visit back in June gave me a taste for the city’s renewal. Very excited! Then, finally, after the festive season it’s Queenstown, here I come – I never tire of just kicking back, dining out and visiting some of my favourite beauty spots. Last time we even caught the bus to Wanaka, enjoying the magnificent scenery when crossing the Crown Range. We spent the day there then returned the same way – quite a trek but loads of fun. Well, I’ve rambled on enough – that’s what the prospect of summer does to me. But, now it’s time for readers to grab a cuppa and settle down to reading this month’s SOUTH, enjoy!

Q&A Wenny Lubbers

With versatile homes PUKEKOHE new owner

Versatile is a name synonymous with garages, sheds and farm buildings but it has also built hundreds of quality residential homes and commercial projects. Part of the Pukekohe building scene for the past 25 years there is now a change at the helm and from this month the local franchise will be fully owned by Franklin Construction. SOUTH magazine talked to new owner and managing director, Wenny Lubbers about what the future holds for Versatile.

Taking over a large company such as Versatile Pukekohe is major move; do you have an industry background? I have worked in the building industry for more than 30 years now and have about 26 years experience in operations management. What’s more, I was operations manager at Versatile Pukekohe from 2010 and I’ve worked with long time owners, Dave and Bridget Sutton since then so I know the company well. Naturally, I’ve been involved with the building of many new homes, commercial buildings, garages and farm buildings throughout the district. How did you make your start in the building industry? I started as an assistant site manager when I was 19 and did my engineering degree in the evening hours. I finished it just before I reached 40. What prompted you to make an offer for Versatile Pukekohe? A few years ago my wife, Arean, and I decided we would like to own our own building company and we deemed it prudent to take over a well established firm rather than starting from scratch. Because I knew the company well, Versatile was the perfect choice. SOUTH understands Versatile is now under the auspices of Franklin Construction. Will Versatile still be the trading name and, if so, will the previous owners have any involvement and will Arean work in the business too? We have been, and always will

be, trading as Versatile. Versatile is a well-known New Zealand brand which has been voted New Zealand’s Most Trusted garage and sleepout brand in NZ for three years running. Locally we have also won Master Builder awards for our homes. We couldn’t be prouder to trade as Versatile. I’ve always had a good relationship with Dave and Bridget and Bridget will remain working for the company as a homes sales consultant which augers well for customers as she knows the ropes perfectly. Arean works as a portfolio manager at Barfoot and Thompson and helps with Versatile where needed. The knowledge she has about the rental market helps us when people want to build a potential investment home. We can give them some guidance on what returns can be expected and this works well. When it comes to the day to day operation, will Versatile carry on as it has or is a new direction planned? Versatile has been a great business for the past 15 years under Dave and Bridget and it will continue to develop as market and trading conditions change. However, there will be no major direction change in the near future. Is the public perception of the company all about its garages and sheds or are people aware that you build residential houses too? It’s true, some people still think of Versatile as a garage building company and we are, of course, proud to be associated with that arm of the industry which includes

all manner of farm and commercial buildings. However we have been in the new home market for more than 30 years and, as the ‘Versatile’ name suggests, our talented construction team can build virtually anything and build it well. In recent years we have impressed clients with our contemporary designs and well built homes which cover a range of styles and budgets. Our show home at Pokeno as won high praise from its many visitors and clients have been delighted with the versatility of the company when it comes to adapting to varied lifestyle needs. We are uncompromising when it comes to delivering quality and service and commend both our team and sub-contractors for the skill and pride they show when producing our product. While this must be an exciting time for you and your wife, the lack of affordable housing has be under scrutiny for months, is this tiring, annoying or challenging? I still am utterly passionate about building, and building well –

anything from small to big projects – and I’m glad to say our range of standard designs contain options for those on tighter budgets. However, regardless of budget, we deliver the best possible experience to our customers from the first enquiry through to handing them the keys to their new home or building. We are honest enough to say sometimes there are hitches but the difference with us is in the way we handle them – efficiently, with professionalism and in ways that ensure our clients are delighted with the final outcome. Stress free- and the right result is what we expect to achieve every time. It is always a challenge to design and build the ideal home for a client but that’s a challenge I (and the rest of the team) love. We take great pride when we are told, ‘it’s perfect!” Finally, where to for the local Versatile now? Franklin Film Festival in the Cannes

“It’s amazing to see a project come to life,” Amanda says. “It’s like building a house because it’s a team effort. I have a lot of respect for what other people bring both in skill and time.”

Local filmmaker, Amanda Phillips, has been to the Cannes Film Festival three times and is now using her savoir faire to put on a homegrown version. She talks to ANGELA KEMP about her passion for film and her vision for the forthcoming Franklin Film Festival. Growing up in Nelson, Amanda Phillips’ love affair with the moving image began more than 30 years ago when she was still a toddler. “I remember being fascinated with the TV and by the time I was five I became fascinated with a camera,” says the Tuakau mother of two. “I love all the arts but the reason I love films so much is because it brings all the art forms together.” Fast forwarding a few years saw Amanda move to Auckland to study directing and script writing at South Seas Film and Television School. This led to her first feature film, Desired which was produced by her production company, The Loft Collective. The film premiered at Cannes, Marche Du Film, in 2011. “Making my own film was something I wanted to tick off my bucket list and something I was able to do after coming into an inheritance,” says Amanda who has since made two more feature films and a short film, Date Night which will screen at this month’s inaugural Franklin Film Festival which she has organised. She hopes the festival will have drawn out hitherto undiscovered local talent as well as showing

international films of all genres including documentaries.

industry, Amanda says Cannes is the place to go to.

Amanda moved to Franklin five years ago so her children Gabe (10) and seven-year-old Armani could have a rural upbringing and enjoy a great sense of community similar to the one she had in Nelson.

“It’s like film on steroids. Everyone is there at one time in one place, it’s just incredible. It’s the largest film industry meet up in the world and provides an opportunity to meet face to face with filmmakers and industry representatives. That’s really important and allows for building relationships and identifying new trends.

She works as a teacher aid and is also studying part time to become a teacher but films are her passion. “The children have been involved with films since they were really little and they love it. They are just starting to reach that age when they are doing their first auditions for a school play and becoming interested in a camera. “It’s really nice to see that passion pass on. They have been to Cannes twice – the first time I went, Gabe was a baby and I was pregnant with Armani, the second time was when Gabe was a toddler and Armani was under six months.” Amanda’s third visit to the glamorous French event was in 2017 – but this time without the children, just with her production team. For anyone who is into the film

“When looking for inspiration as a filmmaker, that’s where you want to be. It’s the peak, it’s about people who have dedicated their lives to their craft and as a team they are receiving recognition.” But, right now, Amanda is exploring new ground by organising the Franklin Arts Festival set to open on October 5; it’s a first for her (see side panel). But, once the festival is over she’ll be on to her next film project which she says is in the early development stage and for which she is hoping to get funding. “It’s amazing to see a project come to life. FILM FESTIVAL While not in the same league as Cannes, Amanda Phillips recognised a fabulous opportunity when earlier this year she was invited to show her films at the Franklin Arts Centre. Audiences were treated to her second film Bowie and her most recent, Wake. Bowie is about a single mother trying to find the balance between taking care of her autistic daughter and taking care of herself while Wake is about a rural family navigating life after disaster. Then, when centre manager, Nancy Thompson asked if she’d consider organising a film festival, Amanda jumped at the chance. Now it’s coming together this month. “It was something I had been thinking about for some time. I’m a big fan of film festivals as a way to bring artists together and I think it’s pretty unique to do it through the local arts centre in our area. “We invited entries through a Facebook page with no real special criteria other than that we wanted a 50/50 split between local films and those that weren’t connected to the Franklin area. “We were also keen that the festival had diversity as well as a home-grown feel and we were keen to see a fair share of films directed by women who are disproportionately represented in the film industry in general.” The festival, which opens on Saturday, October 5 at the Franklin Centre, will feature about 10 films, most of them shorts of up to 30 minutes long. The week-long festival will also feature a gala awards night, a live Q + A with a panel of film makers and an interactive multimedia installation in the Franklin Centre gallery. There will be the equivalent of ‘Palme d’Ors’ prizes (or should that be Oignons d’Or?) including for the best actor, best actress, best director, best first-time filmmaker and best young talent, innovative and original work. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Bali calls me! Well known local photographer, CARMEN BIRD, has visited Bali on more than one occasion of late. After her first ‘working’ holiday she returned on a family holiday with husband and children and came away full of praise for the tropical tourist spot. Exploring a new destination for the first time is always exciting so watching my children discover Bali with all its chaos, colour, amazing food, energy and charm, was a delight. With so much to do, and each village having its own unique vibe, many visitors stay at two or three locations during a holiday. We started our journey in busy Seminyak. The streets tourist villas, resorts, cafes and restaurants bustled with locals going about their business while visitors lapped up the Balinese lifestyle. Our rented villa was smack bang in the middle of town, down a driveway, off a main road where the gate opened up to a hidden oasis – a four-bedroom mansion (with en suites for everyone) complete with tropical, landscaped gardens, outdoor living and a pool. The kids couldn’t quite believe it was all ours but quickly embraced their new space by leaping into the pool. The weather was on point with blue skies and temperatures of about 30 degrees Celsius most

days; the low was 25. In our two and a half weeks we barely saw the rain. With the weather near perfect, beach clubs were a must – day or night, long lunch or cocktail in hand to watch the sun go down! Bali sunsets were magical. Most clubs had pools and we spent several leisurely afternoons and evenings with friends, alternating between swimming, sampling the cocktail menu, enjoying the DJs and live bands and sampling delicious food. Kuta De Ta and The W Resort were two of favourite Seminyak hotspots. Of course, the food in Bali was worthy of an article of its own – fresh, healthy, bursting with flavour and, oh so, cheap. Smoothie bowls, fresh raw juices, kombucha, avocado everything and fruit bowls were daily temptations. For the kids, freshly made pizzas and burgers came with a dash of Balinese flair. Cafes, restaurants, beach clubs and eating spots all sported beautiful

Being a very spiritual place, Bali is known for its temples and shrines on every corner and a daily routine for most Balinese people is to make offerings to the gods. Little flax baskets, filled with flowers, cigarettes and candy, placed on the footpaths, as well as little mini temples on poles were a familiar sight around the streets. Burning incense filled the air with the warm smoky waft of Asia. As one of our local drivers explained, culture is very important to the Balinese, just one reason why Western tourists love to visit.

With swimming top of the list for the kids, the family decided on a day at Kuta’s water park and hired scooters to get there. I wasn’t so keen on this ‘fun’ idea but was out-voted.

why it took more than a few deep breaths before we finally made it to Waterbom where the kids hit the slides and I de-stressed with a blissful massage amongst beautiful gardens. After a few days in Seminyak we headed to Canggu, just 30-minutes or so up the road where we encountered a completely different vibe. This area was more laidback and was a favourite stop for surfers, families, foodies, yogis and back packers. The roads were more broken and narrow and the streets surrounded by rice paddies. The two infamous shortcut routes which connect to Canggu, were meant to be a one way but, yet again, this rule was seldom adhered to. With the roads winding through rice fields and sitting a metre or so off the ground, we were told tourists and locals, in cars and on scooters, regularly tip over the edge into the paddy fields – luck was with us. Boasting some of the best surfing in Bali, Canggu was packed with www.southmagazine.co.nz

surfers and our kids enjoyed a couple of sessions on boards catching the perfect waves. Once again, there were many gorgeous eating and drinking places tucked away in all sorts of corners and side streets. Vegetarian options, tantalising tropical fruits and raw foods galore were a great way to balance out those sunset cocktails.

Here, our favourite café was Shady Shack set in a lush garden with smoothie bowls and coffees to write home about.

For tourists, there is nothing like a Balinese massage. Go for the luxury of the beautiful Spring Spa (owned by a Kiwi woman) or pop into one of the many cheap and cheerful roadside spots which will set you back about $8 for a full hour.

When it comes to homewares, Bali has a reputation and a style all of its own – Boho chic with feathers, beads, loads of black and white with lots of cane thrown in the mix. Kim Soo in Seminyak and Bungalow Living in Canguu are worth a visit.

Our final destination was Nusa Dua, oft described as the Denarau (Fiji mainland resorts) of Bali. Hotels and resorts lined the beach with a boardwalk along the front – great fun when hiring bikes and cycling but when cycling in the heat be sure to rehydrate along the way.

Yoga is also big in Bali and thousands flock to the retreats every year. Bella and I tried a few different yoga spots; a Seminyak favourite was down a side road, set in a tropical garden. Classes were in

Once again, eating out was never a challenge – we enjoyed so many different venues including a themed beach restaurant at Pirate’s Bay where there were treehouses, ships, swings and loads of

places to explore. Of course, there were so many more tempting venues but we settled for day trips to Ubud. Set in the mountains surrounded by terraced rice paddies, rain forest, waterfalls and a sacred monkey forest, it was idyllic – if you don’t mind the monkey business! Those cheeky little critters were apt to pilfer handbags and sunglasses if we didn’t watch them. Another day was spent exploring Uluwatu, at the southern end of Bali with resorts and beaches surrounded by limestone cliffs, iconic temples, views out across the ocean and, possibly, the best sunset viewing we experienced. As readers will realise, it’s difficult to condense Bali into a few words; there was so much to see and do. Its chaotic streets might not be everyone’s choice – especially those who long for quieter surrounds – but who could deny its unique qualities? Bali has certainly captured a little piece of my heart and I am already dreaming of another visit. south | october 2019 |

In a ﬁt about ﬂeas? With such a mild winter this year, we are sure to be in for large numbers of fleas and ticks this spring and summer. DR NIKKI FROST, senior Veterinarian at Franklin Vets Pukekohe talks to readers about these pesky critters.

HEY GRANDUDE!

Fleas have a very flexible life cycle and will wait until conditions are optimal to move from one stage to another. The warmer and moister it is, the faster the life cycle will progress. The fleas you actually see jumping and biting represent only 5% of a flea infestation in a home. Flea eggs make up around 50%, while flea larvae and pupae make up 45%. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, which means that a single prolific female flea can cause a major infestation in less than two months. In just 60 days, with one female flea at maximum egg production (and assuming that half of the eggs are breeding females), you could have more than 20,000 fleas on your hands. Scary stuff! Flea eggs aren’t sticky so after being laid on the host, they drop onto the carpet, your pet’s bed, your bed, etc. During the pupae stage, fleas are wrapped in a silken cocoon which is resistant to insecticides and is often spun around the base of the fabric fibres they’re on, making them very difficult to kill or remove.

Using flea bombs or foggers will help to kill eggs and larvae in the environment. Vacuuming first helps the pupae to emerge from their cocoon where they are no longer protected from these products. Fleas can also transmit parasites such as tapeworms. When dogs and cats groom fleas off their bodies, they often swallow them. If the flea is carrying tapeworms, they’ll then be released into their intestinal tract. Nowadays we have a lot of excellent flea control products and some will also do ticks and worms. For advice on which product is best for your pet, talk to your local vets.

I definitely think it will help give people a much better understanding of what steampunk is all about.” Steampunk may be tricky to define but it could be classified

as a reinterpretation of the steam-powered Victorian era, drawing inspiration from history and science fiction. In a way, it’s a little like one might expect ‘art’ (personified) to perceive science. “I suppose steampunk is a bit like cosplay but rather than dress up as existing characters [from books or movies], you tend to invent your own,” the Drury local confirms. “It offers a creative spin on technology. The imagination involved is what really draws me to it; steampunk provides a sense of escapism and I think we can all benefit from a little of that.”

Hands-on skills can prove useful too. Nickie works for Counties Manukau District Health Board but it’s her studies in visual arts at MIT, as well as sewing and millinery skills, which tend to come in handy when helping flesh out her family’s characters – so too does the family’s flair www.southmagazine.co.nz

for theatre. “Both Grant and I have creative, performance backgrounds,” the former Papakura High student says. “We met in 2001 while we were involved with a performance of Little Shop of Horrors. Grant was the voice of Audrey and I was working on the sets.” While Grant teaches drama at De La Salle, Bailey and Ruby are both involved with Hawkins Youth Theatre – Bailey played the title role in Bugsy Malone earlier this year and Ruby is currently appearing in Aladdin. Since attending their first steampunk festival, the Waugh family has found their passion for creativity to be further fuelled. “My aunty was on the organising committee for Steampunk the Thames, which is massive. We went along to support her and see what it

Today, the Waughs have become part of a burgeoning community which has expanded due to electronic (as opposed to steampowered) technology. “I think it’s much easier for people with shared interests to find each other and get together, thanks to the internet. It’s also very easy to find and share inspiration, through pictures and stories.” Steampunk the Thames (next on in November) and Oamaru’s Steampunk Festival NZ are,

perhaps, the best-known annual events, but there are plenty more occasions for enthusiasts to get together. Last year, the family appeared at the Auckland Santa Parade and, this year, expects to take part in Pukekohe Christmas Parade. Other local events where one would be likely to run into Sapphire Sinensis, Doctor Foster, Professor Cogsen and Ruby Firefly include the Franklin Vintage Harvest Festival and Karaka Vintage Day. “We were at the Harvest Festival at Glenbrook Vintage Railway earlier this year – it was a lot of fun. The vintage machinery people seem to like what we do and we really appreciate the time and effort they put into maintaining their machines, which helps preserve the history that’s associated with them. I think, in a way, we help liven up their events and add an extra element to them.” south | october 2019 |

CITRUS CURED PRAWNS Serves two as sharing plate

INGREDIENTS Prawn marinade • 6 peeled and shelled raw prawns – as large as possible • 1 whole lemon juiced and zested • 1/2 ruby grapefruit juiced and zested • 1 garlic clove crushed to a paste • 4 Tbsp good quality olive oil • 1 pinch mild chilli flakes • Pinch of sea salt and cracked black pepper For cos hearts and wrapping • 1 whole cos lettuce (to be divided into 6 hearts) • 2 toasted nori seaweed sheets cut into 8 rectangles or a small packet of pre-cut rectangles • 12 long fresh sprigs of coriander For hot pepper roasted peanut sesame dressing • 1 tsp hot pepper paste (Gochu Jang – available from most Asian and deli grocers or 1/2 tsp of Sriracha sauce) • 3 Tbsp wasabi peas chopped • 3 Tbsp roasted peanuts, roughly chopped • 6 Tbsp deep roasted sesame dressing (available in most supermarkets) • 2 Tbsp lemon juice

METHOD Gently score the underside of each prawn to cut the tendon and prevent prawns from curling when cooking. www.southmagazine.co.nz

In a medium bowl, combine the lemon juice and zest, grapefruit juice and zest, garlic, olive oil and chilli. Stir to mix ingredients. Add the prawns and gently cover with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before cooking. To divide the whole cos lettuce into six hearts, wash and keep the base intact, cut in half then split the halves into thirds, keeping the base intact to hold the heart together. Finely chop the coriander. Keep covered in the fridge until ready. Have the Nori on hand. In a small bowl, mix the hot pepper paste, wasabi peas, roasted peanuts, sesame dressing and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside ready to serve. To serve: Heat a medium sized pan to near smoking point, add all the prawns directly into the pan (there is enough oil to coat and allow the prawns to be lubricated while cooking). Cook at a high heat for 3 minutes, flipping the prawns over twice to ensure even cooking on both sides. To eat: place a cos leaf into your palm, add a nori sheet, a prawn, a spoon of dressing, finish with the coriander and roll like a juicy prawn log. Enjoy! south | october 2019 |

For many Kiwis the poppy is synonymous with Anzac Day commemorations and the poppy fields of Flanders which inspired the moving First World War poem, In Flanders Fields, by Canadian doctor John McCrae who served as a surgeon in that conflict, dying of pneumonia in France in 1918. Even today, poppies flourish in fields throughout Europe, often considered a weed although in gardens around the world they are also regarded as a summer beauty. This lovely flower has many uses including in cooking, (its oil being used in cake and bread making), in salad dressings and in margarine. One species is well known for its association with the opium trade although because poppy seeds contain small amounts of opiates, such as morphine and codeine, they have, for many centuries been sought after in medicine for their pain-relieving properties. Also symbolic of sleep, peace and death, it’s easy to see why – sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative and death because of the common blood-red colour of the red poppy, in particular. Dating back many centuries BC, poppies come in a host of varieties and colours. For many of us, it is the familiar red,

orange of deep yellow shades which are often seen creating a sunny garden display during spring and summer. However, for those seeking a distinctive and different poppy, why not look to the Yates California Poppy ‘Thai Silk’ which produces exquisite ruffled double and semi-double blooms with lustrous, silky rosy pink petals with touches of cranberry and lemon. ‘Thai Silk’ California poppies are easy to grow, drought tolerant and will bloom all summer. Growing to around 20 cm tall with attractive ferny bluegreen foliage, they are ideal for planting in shimmering drifts at the front of a garden border. They’re quick to flower, taking only 8-10 weeks to bloom after sowing. It’s easy to sow Yates California Poppy ‘Thai Silk’ seeds directly where they are to grow, in a sunny garden bed. Scatter seed thinly and rake into the surface lightly. Firm down, keep moist and seedlings will emerge in 10 – 14 days. These plants will tolerate sandy or poor soil but don’t like over-moist conditions or poorly drained soil. Keep weeds under control around California poppies but avoid disturbing the soil around their roots.

Feed poppies each week with Yates Thrive® Flower & Fruit Soluble Fertiliser, which is a complete and balanced plant fertiliser boosted with additional potassium to promote lots of flowers. Removing spent flowers will encourage more blooms. They also make a beautiful cut flower and are wonderful for attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects into the garden.
