Editor says... I often wonder how Karaka readers, who travel to the city for work, feel about the intersection at harbourside Drive and the subsequent entry to the Southern Motorway’s northbound lanes. this is where I access the motorway most days (having totally given up on Drury) and it is invariably a nightmare of backed up queues and traffic straddling the intersection from all directions. If I am queued back more than half a kilometre, I tend to go straight ahead and travel to Botany through Papakura then via routes off Clevedon Rd. that’s because I know that if I stay and queue, on reaching the traffic lights ahead of the on ramp it will be a mission to cross and actually enter the single occupant vehicle lane.
PLACE FOR PACE AT PUKEKOHE: Wrapped up in a fireproof suit and helmet with his engine idling, the heat of late spring will be on Andre heimgartner when the penultimate round of this year’s Supercars Series (November 2-4) beckons. Pictured on this month’s cover, the Nissan ‘pedaler’ recently spoke with South about the series, his passion for motor racing and expectations when returning to his old stomping ground of Pukekohe Park. See interview pg 38. Photo Nissan Motorsport
Agency would re-look at this area and make initial entry less of a trial. In my mind, a true three lane entry right at the start would be practical as would a double motorway access lane along hingaia Rd. But I feel this is wishful thinking. Motorway access aside, I do hope readers enjoy this month’s South which features a look at spring fashions, food, beauty products and home ideas too plus a couple of cracking interviews. Pet lovers are sure to smile at our parade of pet pictures sent in by readers.

That’s
entertainment!
Shatner’s World October 13, The Civic, Queen & Wellesley Streets, Auckland City When the crew of the USS Enterprise bravely went where no man had gone before, they encountered many strange beings. However, one might argue, those strange beings sure as heck encountered a rather strange being themselves. Now, William Shatner is set to land in New Zealand. Billed as a ‘pop culture icon, raconteur extraordinaire, philanthropist and horseman, this actor, director, and (yes, we know!) recording artist continues to sell out venues thanks to his extraordinary brand of entertainment. Q&A Signature Homes
am Into Reality With
es from $785,000
Signature Homes has been a major part of the New Zealand residential construction scene for more than 35 years. Karaka couple, Murray and Debbie Garland have owned the Papakura/Franklin franchise of Signature Homes for almost 10 years and have built an enviable reputation for experience combined with progressive ideas and sound building practices. Before embarking on the Signature Homes franchise what was Murray’s industry experience? Murray considers himself one of the lucky ones as he has known since he was 8 years old that he wanted to be a builder. He now has close to 40 years’ experience in the building industry. He started as an apprentice for a local Pukekohe builder in 1978 and began working for himself a short time after coming out of his apprenticeship. His passion for the building industry has continued throughout his working career. Franklin district has seen a huge surge in new building activity over the past five years, how significant has this been for Signature Homes?
What are some common inclusions in these homes; are they all House & Land packages and who are they best suited to?
Coromandel. We also build on client’s own land and offer a full design and build service with our in-house designer.
All of the homes in Paerata Rise include free specialist kitchen design, stone tops to the kitchen, carpets, building consent, and all landscaping, driveways and patios. The only thing not included are the window treatments as they are a personal thing. However, we do have an excellent contact for these. So, apart from that, there is nothing to do when you move in but enjoy the home.
Do each of these areas cater for different residential/client needs and, if so, in what way?
While we have house and land packages for all our sites, we can change the plans to suit the client’s needs.
Yes, all of the areas differ somewhat and we have areas and houses which will suit first home buyers, through to extensive design and build homes. Sites vary in size from smaller urban sites to larger rural sites. What role, if any, does Debbie play in the business? Debbie works full time in the business and is our financial controller.
Building a relationship of trust is of utmost importance as our clients are starting out on a journey that is a large investment for them, both financially and emotionally. They need to be able to trust the information and guidance that we offer to them. Often it will be the first time that they have built a home and they will have heard horror stories in the past; we will give them peace of mind that they are in trustworthy hands. If there was one piece of advice you would offer people considering building a new home what would it be? Select your builder on the relationship and trust, and what guarantees are on offer to provide you with security. Trust your gut.

You don’t have to be Mad to work there... Mad Butcher franchisees at Pukekohe and Takanini are delighted the brand has been reclaimed by Julie Leitch – daughter of the irrepressible founder and champion of the Auckland Warriors, Peter Leitch – and her partner Michael Morton. Having re-secured the business, the couple told HELEN PERRY they are now intent on restoring the chain’s community identity and carrying on Peter Leitch’s legacy. It’s Friday and I’m off to interview the co-owner of a multi-million dollar company; I should wear something fittingly corporate. What the heck, it’s casual Friday so I pull on dress jeans, a jacket and shoes which show a flash of style. I’m glad I did. I meet Julie Leitch for coffee at a cosy café. She is wearing jeans, a checked weekend shirt and her fair hair is brushed and loose; not at all what I imagined. She hugs me warmly and instantly cements my allegiance – Mad Butcher shopping list coming up! From that moment my preconception of a slick and scary businesswoman goes out the door. I am hopeful she doesn’t see me as the paparazzi set to catch her out. I’m not. However, I do start with a tough-ish question: You and Michael Morton [Julie’s partner in life and in the business] have now bought the company back in what could be described as a depleted state three years after it was sold to Veritas. During Veritas ownership, Michael was part of the management team. Do you think people will have confidence that he can now restore the company’s fortunes?’
Julie pauses. “I know in my head what I want to say but sometimes I find it hard to express my thoughts in words. But I can say Michael and I are committed to re-establishing strong relations with our suppliers, with the franchisees and the community itself. In the past, we had good working relationships which a large corporate can have difficulty maintaining. Does that make sense?”
And, suddenly we’re talking about the years my own children regularly relied on Mad Butcher sausages for fund-raising sausage sizzles outside The Warehouse.
It does! Especially when Julie re-iterates that building a rapport with franchisees such as Roy Green at Pukekohe and David Walsh at Takanini is high on her list and she hopes they will see this new direction as invigorating and good for business.
“I grew up on a street where there were loads of kids and you’d always find someone kicking a ball at the park or shooting goals at a friend’s [house]. Those were great times, and yes, fund-raising was a big part of most kids sports lives; part of the reason dad always saw community involvement integral to the way he did business.”
I then ask how difficult will it be to remain competitive in the marketplace now supermarkets have become more price-savvy. Julie has no difficulty answering. “It’s one of our jobs to keep them honest,” she smiles. “I am convinced if we weren’t in the market delivering low priced, quality meat, supermarket meat prices would rise. That’s one reason for re-establishing strong, trusting relationships with our suppliers. We want to regain that reputation for high quality, low prices.
Julie doesn’t hesitate: “Absolutely. Michael was actually part of our company before we sold to Veritas and was a key player in our success. However, under Veritas the company operated within a more restricted corporate structure, very different from in the past.
“Our success relies on that as well as on customer goodwill. I also believe we need to connect more with the 26 franchisees still with us and encourage them to build similar relationships with their customers.”
“Where we could make snap decisions if need be, and had the advantage of close team work, which made consultation easy, at Veritas everything had to go before the board and there was little connection between this big company and the community or even franchisees, in some cases.”
Julie explains that part of her past role was to work with suppliers – “I’m keen to do so again. I’m not really a front of house person, I like to get down to the business working behind the scenes especially when it comes to supporting the community.”
“We couldn’t have sent them on sports trips if it hadn’t been for your dad, I tell her.” We then talk about her years growing up in Pakuranga.
She then tells me about learning the business – helping out after school and during holidays, before finally joining the company proper in 1996. “I can still break down a forequarter,” she laughs, “and I do like to cook.” ‘Do you have a favourite cut?’ I ask. Again, that laugh – “Yes, two, and they’re at the opposite ends of the meat spectrum – corned silverside and scotch fillet.
for anything less that 100 percent commitment to the job. And, that will require some changes to her life. For several years she has been a stay at home mum and talks proudly of Kristin (27) William (15) and Matthew (12). “I’ve also had a penchant for buying and doing up houses but that will go for now although I do want to maintain the voluntary reading work I do with school children. It’s only once a week so I’m thinking that can still work. “However, the important thing now is to concentrate on revitalising the business and working with our franchisees. Dad’s name will always remain synonymous with the brand but its Michael and I who will take up this new challenge and we’re looking forward to it.” One last question: Do people think you’re Mad for buying back the enterprise and taking on that challenge?” “Not at all, friends know I’m passionate about the brand and have just said, ‘go for it’, and we are!” • See page 23 for the Mad Butcher’s take on Beef Ragout
While it’s unlikely Julie will be wielding a cleaver at the chopping block, she knows the coming months will leave no room

Discover dancing they had no time for during their working life and dancing is one of them. A wide variety of dance classes exist, including some specifically tailored to seniors.
Bruce Springsteen may prefer dancing in the dark but ‘twostepping’ can be enjoyed at almost any time of the day and at any age – its not just for young, in-shape, highly co-ordinated people. What’s more there are many dance genres for pairs or groups – ballroom, Latin, classic, country, modern or folk.
If you think you have two left feet, this could be the perfect chance to work on your balance and co-ordination and, like all physical activities, dancing is great for health and wellbeing.
Many retirees look for new interests or to take up hobbies
In addition to helping improve cardiovascular endurance,
muscle strength and flexibility, it also stimulates memory and provokes a positive emotional response. taking dance lessons or joining a dance group also provides a great opportunity for socialising and letting loose. Plus, there’s nothing quite like taking on the challenge of learning something new — and the feeling of accomplishment which comes when mastering a particular move or skill.
Finally, not only is dancing excellent exercise, but it’s also a form of artistic expression which can have therapeutic effects, such as alleviating isolation caused by illness. It may be especially beneficial for people with various neurological, psychological and musculoskeletal ailments and could help delay certain agerelated health problems. So what do you say: care to dance?

Feast of restaurants IN oNE PoRt! There is an appealing simplicity of life in Vanuatu. Even in busy Port Vila, HELEN PERRY was struck by the warmth shown to tourists. Yet despite this unpretentiousness, the town offered some upbeat places to dine. on setting out from New Zealand I had a list of recommendations and planned to eat somewhere different every night. But like most plans of men and over confident journalists, things didn’t quite work out that way. the in-house restaurant at Breakas Beach Resort took precedence on three occasions starting with our arrival just in time for Saturday’s seafood extravaganza – we shared a massive platter of seafood which made us boggle! Such an assortment but no way could we manage it all. then there was the French night; the chef’s French onion soup so, so good. Finally, we stayed in one evening when the heavens opened, the thunder really thundered and the lightning flashed. But, I was too enamoured with my delicious Santo beef dish to worry about the weather – best beef I’ve ever had. other top spots included...
VILA CHAUMIÈRES: I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t have the coconut crab at this lovely restaurant with its romantic setting right atop the water – we could watch tiny fish swimming just below us. We missed out on the crab but we couldn’t fault our meals or the lagoon location – apparently the chef has worked there for 40 years and doesn’t even like taking a short holiday! Soft lighting, soothing music and attractive table settings were lovely but I was especially intrigued by the Balinese- style gardens with gorgeous artworks, the latter all the work of owner, ursula Purdy.
www.southmagazine.co.nz
Even more surprising, I learned that ursula had been an art teacher at St Kentigern College in Pakuranga for 17 years. For the past six years, she and husband, Richard, have owned and operated Vila Chaumières, which only narrowly missed out on being our ‘stay place’ of preference! Also an adults-only resort (no children under 16 years of age), this boutique property was most appealing. “We’ve tried hard to make this place our own, embracing the natural beauty which surrounds us while also enhancing the landscaping to reflect something of ourselves,” ursula told me. Despite the demands of running a popular 7-day resort, she said long standing staff were so well trained and committed to ensuring guests comfort, she could slip away from time to time and everything would carry on like clockwork. their reliability meant ursula could also volunteer as a teacher at one of the local schools. “I teach everything not just art,” she explained. “though education is a priority, and there are a number of schools, both governmentsupported and private, there is still a lot of need and I’m keen to help where I can. It’s great that I now fulfil two roles that I really love.” I would like to have returned here for lunch but time ran out and, instead the next night took us to….
a chef who clearly knows his profession. Part of the Blue Marlin Lodge complex with self-contained waterfront accommodation and game fishing charters from its private wharf, it is in the heart of Port Vila with nothing between the deck and the sea. the restaurant overlooks a gorgeous pool where night lighting turns it cobalt! Rain meant we sat inside but our window seats still enjoyed an active waterfront outlook with the lights of Iririki Island Resort sparkling across the bay. the menu didn’t disappoint either; there were plenty of ‘stars’ to choose from including the cheese soufflé (entrée) and the crispy skin salmon (main), although we also gave the lamb rump and slow roasted shoulder (yes, both on the plate) the thumbs up. Just as impressive as the high standard of food were the immaculately turned out staff and their professional service as well quality décor and the general ambience. A ‘must’ for tourists keen on a night out. Visitors also enjoy….
THE BEACH BAR AT MELE BAY the Friday night fire show at this shoreline venue pulls in a crowd – us among the revellers. A few kilometres out of town, our regular van operator, Simeon tasso, ferried us back and forth. We guessed it would be packed so booked early. A laid back venue, pizza (good
pizza) was a popular choice for many including us. Be warned, it’s a queue, order and pay system at the counter with meals delivered to the table. Although queuing took a bit of time, the meals arrived fairly promptly. But this night was all about the show – plenty of daring fire acts and acrobatics too. A less than fine night, we had to shuffle around for viewing as diners stayed mostly undercover. the large group of performers braved the occasional shower which did nothing to inhibit their style or enthusiasm. A fun night and don’t ever think you’ve seen one fire act too many. this is a great show.
A HIT AND SOME MISSES: there’s never enough time on these holidays but we did manage to lunch at the top-rated, adults only havanna Beach Resort some way north of Port Vila but with a gorgeous setting and sea views. our light lunch – delicious. however, we missed out on a lot including the highly recommended L’houstalet, tamanu on the Beach, Chill and Eratap Beach Reseort – so sorry we didn’t manage to fit them in – next time. What’s more, L’houstalet will be top of our list. Apparently, it serves fruit bat (not sure about that) and wild pigeon (plenty of raves about this dish). Just talking about the ‘misses’ makes my mouth water. time to start planning, methinks!

Memorable Toledo When ROBYN YOUSEF drove into the Spanish medieval city of Toledo it was a perfect spring afternoon and the start to a memorable visit as she explains. Toledo’s beauty and dramatic setting, on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain, overlooking the Tagus River, had me totally transfixed within moments. Despite being packed with tourists and it taking us a long time to find our hotel among the narrow, winding, cobblestone streets, this stunning place had a strong immediate impact. I’m sure that first memory will linger in our minds for a lifetime. Entering the ancient walled city, known for its medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments, the sense of history was almost overwhelming.
14 | south | october 2018
In the Middle Ages, Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities coexisted peacefully so that today, it is often called the ‘city of three cultures’ reflected in the fact that ornate mosques, Sephardic synagogues and one of Spain’s best examples of a Gothic cathedral are all squeezed into its historical heart. On a work trip with my husband in Spain, we had driven from Zaragoza in the Aragon Province (where we’d been searching for the perfect olives to import here) for about four hours to an industrial area near Toledo. We were there to talk about the selection of fruit pastes
we’ve been purchasing for the New Zealand market over the past five years. After a good discussion, we were treated to a long and very substantial Spanish lunch.
With a population of 83,000, some 12,000 of these inhabitants live in the 120 hectares of the beautiful, historic city.
Our suppliers had also booked us into our Toledo hotel so, instead of the succumbing to a traditional siesta (best Spanish idea ever), we drove into the city, located some 74 kilometres south of Madrid.
Tourism plays a major role in the economy with two million visitors every year. Happily, locals give their amazing heritage the huge respect and protection it deserves via a Special Urban Plan directed by architect, Joan Busquets.
Toledo was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 1986. Along with an abundant architectural heritage, 100 buildings are listed as historicartistic monuments and 112 are classified as properties of cultural interest – there was so much to admire.
Because there are so many wonderful historical sites, it would take many days (perhaps even weeks) to visit them all (see the sidebar for a list of highly recommended sites) but we crammed in as much as we could in a short time. www.southmagazine.co.nz
I should mention that when our suppliers were describing how to reach our hotel, they were concerned about the amount of luggage we were carrying. Unfortunately, being in the food industry, we seldom travel light as we always carry a large number of food samples. However, it was only when we had parked and then dragged our huge swag down tiny, winding cobblestone streets that we discovered walking (without baggage) really is the best mode of transport in this beautiful city. Spanish hospitality was warm and welcoming and on the few occasions when we took a wrong turning, local people soon helped us out. Our hotel was an historic gem. The building of La Pasado de Manola was first noted in town
records in 1480. Currently owned by Almudena y Mando and her husband, it was bought by her father-in-law back in the 1970s when a huge renovation project was launched. Sadly, he died in the early 2000s, and although Almudena and her husband both worked as vets, they decided to carry on with his vision. All 14 rooms have all been tastefully decorated in Moorish style with wonderful antiques displayed throughout – it was most comfortable. Centrally located, the sunny, third floor terrace – perfect for breakfast – offered great views of the adjacent cathedral and central quarter of the city. Almudena was particularly helpful throughout our stay and when we decided to bring the car through those narrow streets
to pick up our luggage, she was out there on the cobblestones giving directions and ensuring everything was done properly. Like many tourists we didn’t stay long enough to visit even a quarter of the sites we planned to – locals blame the close proximity to Madrid for so many tourists staying just one night – but we’ll definitely go back. However, next time we’ll forget the rental car. Bus and train travel from Madrid is inexpensive and efficient, a good option which means visitors have no parking hassles and can enjoy exploring on foot. This way very little is missed and there is a real opportunity to appreciate Toledo’s magnificence. I can’t wait to return and advise those who can’t see beyond Spain’s coastline – to consider heading north where Toledo awaits.
hIStoRIC SItES there are some places in toledo that just shouldn’t be missed. Here are just a few: • Bab al Mardum Mosque • Frescos in San Roman Church • toledo Cathedral • City Walls and their Gates • Church of Saint tome where the Count of orgaz is buried • home & Museum of famous artist, El Greco • transito and Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogues • San Juan de los Reyes, San Martin and Alacantara Bridges

Healthy kids a burgeoning crop You’ve heard the news – according to studies this generation is less fit than their parents at the same age. today’s sedentary lifestyle is partially blamed together with diets too high in fast foods and excess sugar. one way to encourage children into the open air and to take part in physical activity is to start them on gardening. First help them choose a spot for their growing projects. this will be depend on available space, but even a couple of pots or foam boxes can be planted with small-growing edibles – try herbs, non-hearting lettuces, cherry tomatoes, baby beets and baby carrots. Gardening is not all hard graft;
it can be creative and enjoyable for youngsters. For example, encourage them to construct tepees to support climbing plants. tie the tops of five or six bamboo stakes together, spreading the bases out on the ground to make a stable wigwam. thread horizontal rows of string through the bamboo stakes at about 30cm spacing. Next, clear weeds, dig the soil and mix in some compost and fertiliser. When the soil is ready, sow seeds which will grow plants tall enough to climb up the tepee. Climbing beans or small cucumbers (such as Lebanese) are ideal. Also plant sunflowers seeds, such as Yates Yellow Empress. As they grow, tie the stems to the stakes; eventually
the tepee will be topped by the large, yellow flowers.
while the pollen can be seen in the male flower.
Growing zucchinis is another easy gardening activity. Start by building a mound of rich soil. Sow a couple of seeds into a shallow crater at the top of the mound and, after germination, allow the plants to tumble down the sides.
By picking a male flower and dabbing it gently into the centre of the female flower children will help to ensure pollination, and future zucchini development.
When the flowers appear, teach children to pollinate the plants by first identifying the male and female flowers. Female flowers have a tiny incipient zucchini at their base,
By growing their own vege, herbs and fruit, children are much more likely to be enthusiastic about eating them and it’s all good fun!

As ACG Strathallan principal Danny o’Connor heads into his second year leading the independent school in Karaka, his quiet impact on the school’s sport programme is starting to be felt. Mr o’Connor, a former national rugby representative, who has played and coached sports at national and international levels, says his vision is to use the power of sport to bring out the best in every student. “Sport is integral to New Zealand’s culture and way of life and it is a crucial part of the co-curricular programme at ACG Strathallan. It improves wellbeing, it helps students’ bodies and minds to develop, it develops resilience and it grows a sense of belonging and a positive school spirit,” he explains. this year, alongside the sports department, he has outlined a new strategy to provide a sustainable sports programme to give students more opportunities to participate in recreational and competitive sport. With clear outcomes to meet by 2019, the school has taken action, appointing professional coaches, providing more opportunities to compete, recognising staff involvement in coaching, and aligning sports with both the school’s PE programme and existing house competition. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Professional running coach and Drury local, James Kuegler came on board in February. he has initiated the school’s first running club, coaches the cross-country team and conducts fitness training for other games players.
Likewise, first XV coach Frank ulberg, appointed at the start of the season, is concentrating on laying the right foundations for the future. “I aspire for our school to be recognised as a competitive school within Counties rugby,” he says. “this year’s stellar growth means we’re in a good place and the contribution of our new players next
“We have a lot of students at our school who are great runners, but
season will be priceless.” For the school, participation, practising and being in a team are the aims. “If a team has respect, care, honesty, hard work, accountability, and humility, they are already winners, irrespective of results,” Mr ulberg says. Mr o’Connor agrees. “We’re quietly going about building a culture of sport here for everyone, regardless of level of achievement.” south | october 2018 |

pets on PARADE
thanks to all those readers who sent in photos of their pets in response to last month’s pet pages feature. From the cute to the cuddly, we loved them all and have displayed as many as possible. In addition, this month’s, South provides some tips for pet care over the upcoming summer and holiday season and reminds animal lovers that these special ‘friends’ deserve our best care and attention.
Canines Planning to bring your canine companion along with you on your next camping trip? here are four safety tips you should follow. 1. KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH
and camping
let him wade around to his heart’s content. Make sure he has access to abundant fresh water, and don’t let him drink from puddles, ponds or other stagnant sources. Stay near him at all times. 3. CHECK FOR PESTS
Keep Fido leashed at all times. If you don’t, he risks getting lost and he could also find himself face to face with another dog (or people) who may or may not be friendly. Also, depending on your campsite, there may be all sorts of hazards where your dog can get into trouble. 2. KEEP YOUR DOG COOL AND HYDRATED Leave your dog in the shade when it’s hot outside. If Fido likes to swim, and you have access to a body of water,
Carefully inspect your pet’s fur for any unwanted insects or foliage after a walk especially in bushy areas. 4. BE VIGILANT Never leave your dog alone, and keep a close eye on him when he’s near the campfire. If out walking on tarsealed areas ensure the pavement is not too hot for your pet’s paws and, wherever you walk, keep an eye out for sharp items such as glass. Happy camping!
Moving soon? GEt YouR CAt READY Cats hate change. If you’re moving soon, it’s a good idea to gradually prepare your feline companion for the transition. here are some tips to minimise your pet’s moving-day anxiety. Several days before the big move, get out your cat carrier and leave it somewhere in plain sight. open it and put a few of your cat’s favourite toys and treats inside. this will
help puss become accusomted to the carrier and associate it with positive feelings. on moving day, isolate your pet in a room with her litter box, food, water, toys and the carrier. this will keep her away from the stressful commotion of the move. once everything except your cat is packed into the moving van, put
her in the carrier and head straight to your new home. When you arrive, put puss in a room alone with all the same items as she had in your old home. Wait until things calm down then let him or her explore the new surroundings at leisure. Puss may seek out a high piece of furniture from which to observe the new environment without feeling
threatened – don’t discourage this. Finally, encourage your cat to roam around by leaving treats in every room. BEWARE OF ESCAPE ATTEMPTS: Your cat could take advantage of the moving-day chaos to attempt a daring escape. Make sure she’s micro-chipped or has an ID tag on her collar. Better safe than sorry!

Adopt a rat! Rug rats = cute kiddies; lab rats = poor mistreated rodents; smell a rat = something underhanded is going on but pet rats, well, pet rats can be cute, clean and even cuddly! here are three reasons rats make good pets: 1. THEY’RE DOCILE Rats are calm and enjoy receiving affection. they don’t mind being handled which makes them good pets for children. they even like taking walks atop a shoulder or tucked into a backpack.
3. THEY’RE SMART Rats, like dogs, are intelligent and inquisitive. Call them and they’ll come running — they’re able to recognise their own name. With a bit of patience and some treats, you can train your rat to perform all sorts of impressive tricks. If you are you ready to fall in love with your own pet rat, visit a local pet store to ask about a friendly rodent to bring home.
Hot doggety
keep canines cool heat Waves can be dangerous for both you and your four-legged friends. to ensure your pets’ comfort and safety throughout the summer, follow these three tips. Provide water and shade at all times. Don’t let your cat or dog become dehydrated during a heat wave. Always leave a bowl of fresh water at their disposal. outdoors, make sure your pet always has access to shade.
2. THEY’RE CLEAN Rats groom themselves and require very little maintenance. Just be sure to change your rat’s litter regularly, provide fresh food and water daily, and trim his claws as needed.
Avoid walking your dog when the sun is at its strongest. It’s highly recommended that you
cat hotel
leave your pet indoors between 11am and 4pm as this tends to be the hottest time of the day. Minimise your dog’s risk of heatstroke by taking walks early in the morning or later on in the evening when the weather is cooler. Never leave your pet in the car when it’s hot out. During the summer, the temperature inside your vehicle can get dangerously high in just a few minutes. Even if you’re parked in the shade, and even if you’ll only be gone a few minutes, never, never leave your dog in the car alone – its life may depend on it.

PEELING BACK LAYERS oF ChEMICAL PEEL MYthS She calmly talked me through the process, thoroughly assessing my skin as she guided me through the comprehensive Vivo 7-Step Skin Analysis.
this month tEREZE tABER debunks myths surrounding chemical peels. Say the words ‘chemical peel’ to any modern woman, and she might shudder while recalling the image of Samantha from Sex in the City arriving at a glam New York party looking like Freddie Krueger’s long-lost sister. Admittedly, I was in this (misinformed) camp for a long time. Despite working for Vivo hair & Beauty, which has 19 beauty salons nationwide, the idea of becoming what I assumed would resemble a disfigured lobster for an entire week, held little appeal.

As the peel was massaged into my skin, I almost immediately felt a prickling sensation across my forehead and flushing on my cheeks. “Is it supposed to feel like this?” I asked nervously, and was reassured that it was a completely normal reaction.
But then I attended a Vivo beauty conference to do a beauty write-up, and, when exposed to the clinical formulations and techniques used in modern day peels, my thinking around the procedure was transformed.
Sure enough, after a few minutes, my skin relaxed. the worst I should expect is some light, mostly unnoticeable flaking in a few days.
“We can now achieve amazing results without the downtime,” Siobhan Chant, beauty manager at Vivo explained. then why keep calling them peels and frightening everybody off? I enquired.
I learned that a chemical peel works by either disengaging the bonds that join skin cells together, which is the flaking process, or by stimulating collagen production in the skin cell, producing younger and fresher looking skin.
Paige, beauty therapist at Dixon St Vivo, chimed in. “Everybody has a layer of dead skin cells; what we as Vivo Beauty therapists can achieve in removing it simply can’t be done at home care level of exfoliation.”
The Denture and Denture Implant Clinics
After the consultation, she prepared for me for a CosMedix Pomegranate Peel – a peel which is totally safe, even for newbies like myself.
I booked my first appointment as soon as I left the conference. A few days later, my Vivo beauty therapist greeted me at the salon. “Will it hurt?” I asked.
Just a 30-minute lunch-break process later, and I’m done. Looking in the mirror I expected to see a ruddy complexion staring back but, instead, I absolutely glow – my skin feels smooth, fresh and young. Samantha Jones, times have changed: chemical peels are for everyone after all.

Frightfully DelightFull Halloween ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: Mysteriously spooky, it’s the DelightFull family! Scaring the bejesus out of kids begging for lollies while dressed as characters from Frozen and the likes – yes, folks, we do live in a very strange world! – has become a favourite part of halloween activities for many. Consequently, a Portuguese-based designer is ensuring decorations fulfil our dastardly designs by providing the right lighting.
Particularly useful in this regard is DelightFull’s Jackson Floor Lamp, which avoids shining light on some dark places while allowing others to be bathed in a ghoulish glow. Named after a certain Jackson – who shall remain infamous – this lamp accentuates scenes which are bound to creep out those kids! More lighting ideas (and products) are available via delightfull.eu. Products can be shipped to New Zealand by arrangement.

Natural and neutral colours were evident across most furniture and soft furnishings and this year the emphasis was on buying once and buying well – luxurious, handcrafted pieces with plenty of detail.
Buy once, buy well Interior designer and owner of Sojo Design, JuLIE REES was inspired by her recent visit to Australia’s prestigious DenFair furniture expo in Melbourne. Returning there a month later to hear international designers speak at the Décor & Design fair, she came back talking the latest trends. Yet again, the Australian design expos came up trumps, showcasing the latest styles and colours to keep visitors up with emerging trends across virtually every element of the home. Natural and neutral colours were evident across most furniture and soft furnishings and this year the emphasis was on buying once and buying well – luxurious, handcrafted pieces with plenty of detail. there was an abundance of inlay work – combinations of metal, wood and brass. Consoles and tables with metal legs were prominent with this marriage of hard materials making for some interesting design concepts. When it came to curtain and upholstery fabrics, emphasis was on texture and layering of textures resulting in very tactile interiors. Interestingly, both velvet and linen were still popular with a move

away from shiny or glossy finishes evident. Like here, but even more so in Australia, there was emphasis on the outdoors being very much another room of the house. Subsequently, there was an array of innovative ideas reminding designers to pay heed to such zones and not underestimate the need to dress them well. Again, shine had been superseded by matte finishes; for the likes of marble and stone, too. If Denfair provided much visual inspiration, speakers at Décor & Design’s Scarlet opus seminar on trend forecasting gave attendees plenty more to assimilate. Forecasters were looking ahead two to three years predicting colour, texture pattern and style trends. Importantly, there was much discussion on the way people will live – their wants, needs and desires.
Four trends which stood out were: CLARITY: Essentially about restoring simplicity into the home with a leaning towards soothing colours to create a sense of calm and well being. BIO-TECH: there was much talk about a collaboration between the evolving worlds of science and technology which is predicted to produce a mix of curious textures, innovative recycled materials and an environmentally-friendly colour palette focused on fresh greens and pastels. IMPERFECT BEAUTY: Designers suggested there will be a quest for authenticity, naturalness and realness in designs. the believe people will start thinking more about the things that have more than monetary value in their lives and also where ‘luxury’ fits into that search for values.
OUT OF THE ORDINARY: there was plenty of prompting to create daily moments of delight, a sense of wonder and to embrace fun and unexpected elements in the home. the challenge now is to embrace some of these ideas. throughout, designers were encouraged to respect the environment, consider sustainable practices and to re-use materials as well as creating furniture and home wares with zero waste outcomes. We were urged to create comfortable furniture pieces, which would one day tell a story, and to focus on a ‘less is more’ philosophy. As a result, it seems many designers will face the future asking, ‘whose hands made this item?’; ‘where have the materials come from?’; ‘what can be recycled?’ the ‘buy once, buy well’ theme is certain to impact. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Trudy Boyce
– rural real estatE SPECIALIST Looking to be on course to living a rural lifestyle? If so, rural sales expert, Trudy Boyce, has insight which few estate agents could ever... muster. A world silver medal-winning (or should that be whinnying?) equestrian rider, and former Olympian, Trudy is true to her word when it comes to finding the right rural property to suit her clients’ needs. “I’ve been in the real estate business for almost a decade and have helped find the perfect property for people keen to escape to the country for the first time, as well as for those who are veteran lifestylers,” she says. “Whether clients are looking for a cosy country cottage, a lifestyle block where they can grow extensive gardens and (perhaps) raise a few animals, or a more extensive property suited to horses, it’s my goal to find the right place at the right price.” With subdivisions criss-crossing the countryside of Auckland’s southern fringes, one may think an escape to the country could prove more a great escape these days. However, Trudy says the region still has much to offer those who prefer to be surrounded by country air. “Although Franklin has seen a fair bit of urbanisation over the past few years, there are still plenty of delightful rural properties – from country cottages to distinguished country homes – out there if you know where to look.” Born in Karaka, this driven rider has seen plenty from the back of many a mount. “When I was growing up I was fortunate to have an abundance of farmland and quiet roads to
32 | south | october 2018
ride on. Road riding around local towns is a pretty scary prospect these days but from the Awhitu peninsula to the Hunua Ranges, we are lucky to still have many picturesque places and trails to ride, or in which to simply set down roots.” Now back in Karaka, Trudy covers country which is still located within easy reach of the city’s bright lights. “And, it’s also a pretty short hop for me to reach the heart of Pukekohe where our offices are located,” she says. “And, we do like heading into the city now and then. Thanks to the rail network, it’s relatively easy to park & ride at Pukekohe and Papakura then zip into the city for a night on the town.” If the devil’s in the details when it comes to buying a new property, Trudy, it seems, is a veritable angel in helping clients achieve their lifestyle dreams. “Size, location and the nature of a property all come into play when choosing a lifestyle block. Often enough, those new to such areas need more than a little help to avoid headaches which can result later on. “By drawing on extensive knowledge of our local area, and experience living on and dealing with such properties, I’m all set to ensure such headaches never eventuate.” To take the first step towards owning your slice of Franklin paradise, contact the Barfoot Pukekohe team via barfoot. co.nz. Judging by her clients’ endorsements, it seems Trudy lives up to her reputation as an agent who will jump through hoops to help.

ARE YOU A TRUSTEE OF A FAMILY TRUST? KELLY JONES leads Franklin Law’s Personal Client team and is responsible for ensuring the firm’s high standards of legal services across a full range of personal asset protection matters. She has extensive expertise advising on Trusts, Estate Planning & Administration, Wills & Powers of Attorney, Elder Law and Relationship Property. The new Trusts Bill was introduced into New Zealand’s Parliament in August 2017 and significantly affects trust establishment and management. The bill, if enacted, will apply to ALL express trusts including those that existed before enactment.
Great reasons to consider tiles MURRAY AND DEBBIE GARLAND, Signature Homes Papakura/Franklin offer advice on choosing your style of home
As trends change and flooring types fall in and out of favour, tile remains one of the most trusted flooring solutions over time. With the evolution of modern printing and manufacturing, tile will continue to stay in the forefront of technology to offer versatility and design. As well as looking great there are other benefits that tile, and a tile finish, can add to your new home.
Healthy Home In recent years, we’ve become more conscious of our health, and that of our family members. At Signature Homes we are often asked about the sustainability and health impacts of the products we use and incorporate into our homes. Environmentally-friendly, ceramic
tile is manufactured using natural materials and does not retain toxic chemicals, odours, allergens or bacteria. It is fire-retardant and, in the case of a house fire, will not emit toxic fumes. Because of the base nature of the product – clay – tiles contain none of the chemicals that have been in the media associated with other flooring products and associated health issues. Because tiles, by nature, are inorganic and have a hard-fired surface, they do not absorb dust mites and are completely inhospitable to bacteria, fungi and mould- a critical plus for those with allergies.
An express trust is a trust which has been established by private individuals in which a trustee holds or deals with trust property for the benefit of the beneficiaries or for a permitted purpose. Most family trusts would be an express trust. One of the main features of the bill concerns trust management. Much trust management in New Zealand is abysmal. There are many trusts that have no guidance from a professional (lawyer or accountant) and, left to their own devices, trustees have managed trusts as if the trust’s assets are their own, which would weaken or defeat the purpose of the establishment of a trust and the protection of the trust owned assets. Not only may the assets of the trust be in jeopardy but also, as a trustee, by law you are accountable for the way you carry out your trustee duties.
For further information ensure you contact one of our team today on 0800 828822 or email garland@signature.co.nz.
The bill sets out mandatory and default trustee duties to help trustees understand their obligations. These are simple and amount to taking the trust seriously, for example: • A trustee must know and follow the terms of the trust which are set out in the Trust Deed;
HOUSE & LAND PACKAGES AVAILABLE NOW
• A trustee must act for the beneficiaries of the trust;
• A trustee is to act with reasonable care and skill, to invest prudently, not to do things for their own benefit, and to act impartially towards beneficiaries; and • A trustee must keep certain information and may be required to make this available to beneficiaries (including records of trust assets, trustee decisions, and changes to the trust). Being a trustee is an onerous task. Under the bill, record keeping and the proper exercise of the duties and powers of trustees becomes critical. The bill will strengthen the hand of beneficiaries by allowing them rights to trust information, so the beneficiaries can play a bigger role in keeping trustees honest and accountable. Now is the time for those involved in trusts, to review and consider the application of the bill to existing trusts. For some, decisions need to be made as to whether or not to continue with a trust – you may decide that you get little benefit from the trust and that this is the time to wind it up. On the other hand, for those who do find they still have a compelling reason for a trust, good management and record keeping systems will be essential.

harcourts Pukekohe real estate salesperson, Jo-ANN DAY-toWNSEND, gives an update on the real estate and market happenings.
hAVE A PLAN, StICK to It! Smith & Sons Pukekohe owners, LANE and MELISSA VAN DEN BRINK know how important it is for a home to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. their advice is designed to guide homeowners smoothly through the renovation process. how magical has the weather been for the start of spring? It has been amazing to get out and about with the family in the sun. We have also been busy making the final decisions about the finishing touches on our new home, such as which paint colours to go with. this had me thinking about how our clients pick from so many different shades of white! Whether it is your forever home or not, the finishing touches can make or break a project. Great finishes can bring the design together and set off the look perfectly, but poor choices can work against the overall style. here are some tips I found really helpful when making some tough decisions myself. • Decide on your style! Do you like modern clean lines, do you like Victorian era style, do you like boho chic? Coastal, minimalist, art deco? the list
goes on. once you choose a style, stick to it.
the regional property market slow down is definitely continuing. the easing of net migration will be impacting these markets and, in addition, tightening credit plus recent value increases affecting affordability, as well as the ban on foreign buyers, will all have had an impact. Some typical higher growth areas, such as Queenstown, have seen a decline of 1% in the past three months which is the worst for four years and annual growth peaked at 32.6% in November 2016. Regional areas have seen increases in the past three months but even these have been relatively inconsistent.
• hire a professional. Not everyone has the eye for interiors but if you have the budget for it, it’s worth thinking about. Interior designers can come up with ideas that you never considered but, even more importantly, they can make sure everything ties-in together. this can be important if you are trying to sell the property on. • Check out some Apps! houzz, now a worldwide website/App, allows you to search for ideas by room, by style and even by product. It’s a bit like Pinterest but just for interiors and exteriors. Pinterest is another great place for gathering ideas by making a design board. • If it’s your forever home don’t be afraid of colour! And, last but not least… make a plan and stick to it!

People’s inability to secure funding, especially at the higher end of the market, has seen less price pressure translate to minimal value growth. As we begin to approach spring, the question is whether or not the market will respond with increased listings. In most regions outside Auckland, listings are at near alltime lows. this is contributing to the controlled slow down in values, as active buyers still face competition for the few properties on the market. Auckland listings stand at 8.6% compared to 46.6% 2 years ago and Waikato 9.7% compared to 14.1% for the same periods. thinking of listing now is a great time to do so with lots of buyers in the market and fewer than expected seasonal listings – now is a good time to get your property sold.

Can Nissan crash Holden & Ford’s Pukekohe party? Every year, families and friends delight in a feud of Hatfield versus McCoy proportions as they cheer for Holdens or Fords. However, come this year’s Auckland SuperSprint, JON RAWLINSON will be cheering for a third party candidate in this ‘first past the post’ system, after chatting with Nissan driver, Andre Heimgartner.
hold on holden and back up Ford, Pukekohe Park doesn’t (necessarily) belong to you! these two makes may have dominated Supercars’ Auckland SuperSprint but there’s always a chance a dark horse could claim the chequered flag come November 2-4. “holdens and Fords have been developing for so many years, which makes it tough for teams with other cars, but the Nissan teams have been quite strong during this year’s series,” Nissan Plus Fitness Racing driver, Andre heimgartner says. “I used to go to Pukekohe with my family, camp out and watch Supercars. to race there now is very special because that’s where it all began. there doesn’t seem to be any real ‘home ground advantage’, but if there’s any place a Kiwi wants to win, that’s it.” Local fans may have only one chance each year to catch the Australian Supercars live on home soil but Andre is hopeful New Zealand could host more rounds in future. “Motorsport is very strong here, drawing a lot of interest from fans.

Supercars needs an event in New Zealand and I think they could use another one too. It’s all about getting young kids interested in the sport and, if you can get more of them to the track, that’s more likely to happen.” Despite now heading towards its home straight with four races to go, this year’s series will still have plenty more twists and turns to come. Next on the agenda is a marquee event, the Bathurst 1000, october 4-7. “Bathurst is one of the biggest and best-known races in the world drawing an awesome crowd. It has an amazing buzz; it’s a very special event. You always want to get on the podium especially there. If everything lines up, that shouldn’t be a drama, but (obviously) you’re up against a lot other drivers all trying to do the same thing. “A reasonable goal for me and [co-driver] Aaren Russell would be to finish with a better result than in the past.” Nissan last topped the Bathurst podium with back-to-back wins, courtesy of Mark Skaife and Jim Richards in 1991 and 1992.

Karts to Supercars However, since 1998, Fords and Holdens have shared all top honours at ‘the great race’. Last year, along with Tim Slade, Andre achieved his best result at the Mount Panorama circuit, finishing ninth behind the wheel of a Holden VF Commodore.
also in the firing line when results don’t go as planned. “You have to have a good car and I definitely think that the best car should win. In reality, motor racing is about 60-70 percent down to the car and the rest to the driver. And, yes, luck does play a big part.
While Andre is out of the running for the overall drivers’ championship (currently sitting 19th), fellow Kiwi, Shane van Gisbergen, is leading the charge with another Kiwi, Scott McLaughlin, in second. The series could be wrapped up in front of a home crowd at Pukekohe.
“The mechanics probably don’t get enough credit [from the fans] for what they do but they don’t tend to get chucked out if things go wrong either!” laughs Andre.
“The [driver’s] championship has gone for me now so I’m hoping to grab some good results from the remaining rounds and finish inside the top 15,” says Andre.
“I have a general understanding of how things work with my race car but nowhere near as much as the mechanics. It helps, to a certain extent, to understand how the car’s running underneath you and what it needs to go faster but, at the end of the day, you need to rely on your team’s expertise.
“Shane’s on form, his car’s going well and his team [Red Bull Holden Racing] is doing a great job. But it’s not over by any stretch of the imagination. We’ve seen [the lead] chop and change so much and the last rounds will be very interesting with a large amount of points on offer. However it turns out, I’d prefer a Kiwi won rather than an Aussie!” While Supercars’ drivers may pop corks from atop podiums, they’re
A little mechanical knowledge in the driver’s seat can go a long way too.
“We have about 60 in our team and a pit stop requires 15-20 crew. The cars have millions of moving parts and, even if a two dollar part isn’t done up properly or even designed right, it can ruin your race. There are so many areas where things can go wrong so it definitely takes a good team to make sure all those moving parts work as they should.”
Originally from rural Whitford, Andre Heimgartner first put ‘pedal to metal’ age six, racing karts with Mount Wellington KartSport. “I started young but didn’t do that much karting – some would have raced more in a year than I did in four. For me, it was just something cool and fun I could do with my dad. In saying that, starting a sport at a young age can only be helpful in the long run.”
with and against some of his boyhood idols. “I watched a fair bit of racing back in the day. I was a ‘Holden boy’ and Greg Murphy was probably my biggest hero,” he says. “I remember drivers like Rick Kelly, who’s my teammate now, [Mark] Skaife, all those guys; I’ve met them and raced against some of them, which is a pretty cool way to make a living.”
Starting his professional racing career with a hiss and a roar, Andre became the youngest driver to win the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship (2010-11); a title he successfully defended the following season. However, wins have been much harder to come by in Supercars. “It was good to get those championships under my belt. You do expect to keep winning but racing in Australia is a lot more difficult, it’s a different league.” A first Supercars’ drivers’ title may still be on his hit list but Andre is living a dream, having competed

Tearing along the jagged line Circuit de Charade in Clermont Ferrand, which included public road sections, hosted the French Grand Prix in 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. The 8km course fell out of favour as loose volcanic rock and the lack of any real run-off areas took their toll on cars and drivers alike.
Jaguar worked closely with the track owners and local authorities to re-establish the original Circuit de Charade layout for the 300 Sport’s flying lap.
The full, longer circuit was last used in 1988 so Jaguar returned to the historic track to mark the anniversary of its closure by completing the first flying lap of the circuit in three decades, and attempting to set a new lap record for a production saloon. With a roundabout and two narrow gateways not used in the original circuit to contend with, Vincent Radermecker lapped the demanding track in just 4 minutes 09 seconds at an average speed of 116km/h (72mph), to claim the lap record.
