Editor says... Listening to The Breeze, I was moved and impressed by ‘Ruth;’ whose two sons, now young adults, suffer from autism. As radio hosts, Robert Rakete and Jeannette Thomas pointed out, parenting paths can take many unexpected turns, some never imagined by couples when embarking on parenthood. The first lesson I took from the chat between The Breeze hosts and Ruth, came from Robert. He said on seeing young people with a disability our instinct is to often think how fortunate we are that our children are well and healthy, the implication being that the other parents are unfortunate when their children may be living fulfilled, happy lives and their parents feel both fortunate and rewarded. From Ruth’s words, I learned that despite the challenges of raising two sons with such a severe disability, there have been many rewards and both lads were in a caring, active environment with their futures well secured. I was also reminded that it is easy to be judgmental about the decisions of others when we have no inkling of the circumstances

I am always full of admiration for Robert and Jeanette’s on air wisdom (and their humour) and, on this particular day, their turn of talk made me want to hug Ruth – it seemed to me she had a warm and supportive family unit, that her sons were greatly loved and, that she had a great deal of tolerance for those who display little understanding of both the weight and joys which can result from managing intellectual, physical or behavioral disabilities. So, be thankful for what we have in life, have patience with those who may not be as able as ourselves and support for those whose journey in life contains many hurdles.

Q&A Brother and sister duo, Mike Potter and Lisa Stone combined their talents with builder father, Mark Potter in 2010 to create Emandee Homes. Bringing a fresh concept to building in Franklin, with a commitment to creating opportunities for all buyers and all budgets, it’s been a busy time. While Mark retired last year, Mike and Lisa continue full steam ahead to grow the business which has evolved considerably since start up.
q: Your catch phrase is, “building homes in an enjoyable and collaborative way,” what does that mean for you Lisa? I want people to have the same experience as we do when it comes to building homes. I often hear negative feedback about a building process – stress, over runs, lack of communication and a general feeling of detachment from the project. That’s not what building your home should be about. Mike and I have built many homes for ourselves and our experiences have been satisfying, fun and the end product has been a real reflection of us. That’s what we want for our clients. We want new home owners to be fully involved in their build from conception to completion and we want to do it in an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, putting forward ideas and working with us to create the perfect home. q: mike, you grew up in franklin, completed your apprenticeship here and live locally with your wife and daughter how do you see the future for building in franklin as it navigates the demands and changes of a growing population? Franklin has grown so much in the past 10 years and I think this will only intensify over the next 10. As a family we had extensive careers in the building industry and developed a wide range of complementary skills so creating our own building company was a natural progression. our vision was to offer clients affordably priced homes which provide all the benefits of a design and build. collaborative decision making, design meetings and involvement throughout the build with experienced and knowledgeable staff was the goal. We feel we have achieved this by designing in-house and keeping our team small and upskilled. We try to keep business relationships within Franklin. q: How do you feel clients benefit from you having the ability to offer in-house design, pricing, interior selections and your own building team all under one umbrella?
Being a one-stop-shop has many benefits to clients but the most significant would be cost and time savings. To build a bespoke home, clients would usually engage an architect, source a builder and an interior designer, then navigate their own way around product selection which is a very time-consuming process – and costly! At emandee Homes clients visit one place for design, price, product selection and anything outside the box. We organise and guide them through the process. Significantly, the project is more cohesive when working with one team. A build can become quite disjointed when there are many independent groups working together. q: What do you see as the top three components to a successful build? First, you need a great team of support staff and contractors. We are so lucky to have an in-house building team; our staff are a mad bunch but they give us 100% and we love that we can provide apprenticeship opportunities and grow their roles in the business. our contractors are the backbone of our business; they carry our reputation as much as we do so we value them and want to show our loyalty. It’s not always about saving a few dollars; if you have good people, pay them well and keep them. Secondly, communication is critical between us, the client, the staff and the contractors. Keeping everyone informed, updated and supported
is key to achieving great results. Lastly, it’s about being flexible and determined. The goal posts can move in this business, you hit hurdles and outcomes you don’t expect but you push through to achieve the best outcome. you try to be the best version of yourself every day; that makes the difference for you, your client and all involved. q: Rural design and build projects feature strongly in your portfolio – how do these come about? Building on rural sites is an entirely different ball game, one with which Mike and I are very comfortable given our country upbringing. clients are reassured by our knowledge and understanding of all things rural and the backing we have from a great group of ‘subbies’ who are also well versed in rural projects. An initial meeting on a rural site will usually see us excited by the challenges and we often foresee issues not always perceived at that early stage. I think these attributes are what make us stand out from other builders when it comes to rural builds! q: What’s ahead? We are excited about the imminent move to our new showhome in Paerata Rise. The ancient Eygptians are credited with inventing the art of wood turning and thanks to the skill and craftsmanship of modern woodturning masters such as Terry Scott, its popularity shows no signs of waning as ANGELA KEMP discovered. Back in the day when Terry Scott and his wife Michelle were looking for a block on which to build a family home, it was a large, gnarled and very old puriri tree which sealed the deal. Unlike many builders who wouldn’t welcome such an inconvenience on a building site, for Terry it was a sign that this piece of paradise in Hunua was the place to set down his roots. A builder by trade, he soon built a beautiful home, Timberly, with plenty of room for a workshop to indulge in his favourite hobby. Later he added a showroom to exhibit his work and a wood turners’ emporium where he stocks and sells everything needed to transform timber into a piece of art.
“I sell a lot to overseas buyers but a great deal is bought by other woodturners because they see a piece of my work and think they’ll never be able to do that so they take it away for inspiration. “I do a lot of commissions and I’m currently working on one for an Alfriston vineyard. The family planted macrocarpa trees 100 years ago but have now sold. I milled the timber and I’m making pieces for the family’s 120th re-union.” Public works by Terry include The Birds turned from the infamous Monterey pine which had to be felled on one Tree Hill. Soon after its installation in 2001 in the cornwall Park visitor’s centre, the work was stolen but later returned.
on the day I called around, Terry was bidding farewell to a group of international visitors. They included a family from Thailand who have collected his work for 15 years – Terry’s skill and unique artistic interpretation has earned him worldwide recognition as one of the craft’s greatest practitioners.
Terry has also donated a large piece of work to the Pulman centre. It was created from kauri which had been excavated from the site during the centre’s construction. Recently, he also sold a bowl made from an olive tree planted by Sir Logan campbell.
He says he finds inspiration all around him – “I look at nature, get a picture in my mind them come back and recreate what I see.” He has a list of awards as long as your arm – if you have exceedingly long arms; the awards number in the hundreds.
Terry says he was ‘hatched’ and grew up on a poultry farm in Takanini and had his first experience of woodturning at high school (he still has the bowl and goblet he made). A few years later he started a building apprenticeship and decided to give woodturning another try.
“If you said I had an artistic bent 10 years ago I would have laughed, but I use wood like a canvas and have a lot of diverse styles. A lot of my work goes into private collections, museums and as heirlooms. I like pushing the boundaries and I put a lot of myself into the work.
“I was still living on the poultry farm and had access to an abundance of sheds so I set up my first workshop with a very old combination eight inch saw buzzer, a belt sander and a very old Black and decker drill. My first lathe was a washing machine motor which I mounted on a plank.”
Terry teaches and demonstrates his skills across the world but is best known for his ‘Mantaray’ bowls and boxes and his ‘Midas’ vessels. ever willing to encourage other woodturners, he has produced detailed dvds showing how to complete these items. He says wood art is undervalued compared with other disciplines such as glass making and ceramics. A basic bowl takes him three or four hours to make but a more detailed work can be 40 hours, time that can never be recovered pecuniarily. “People don’t realise how large the craft of wood turning is in new Zealand, it’s huge. I enjoy entering them and I’m proud that having my work there has lifted the level as well.” A member of South Auckland Wood Turners’ Guild, which has more than 130 members, Terry says they meet once a week but have difficulty attracting younger members. “It’s a shame they [youth] don’t learn any of these
hands-on skills in school anymore because that’s where I learned.” Much of Terry’s work has the appearance of filigree or very fine metal work and he is often asked if it is made of timber. “even though I love timber I know I must be doing something right if people think it’s metal.” It’s his attention to detail that makes Terry’s work so exceptional, like a rimu bowl on display in his showroom decorated with 1200 miniature frangipani flowers. He likes working with ancient kauri or, in particular, any wood that has plenty of movement in the timber and burl (a scab-like growth on the trunk). “I love all things wood,” he affirms. Students are encouraged to become involved in something they are passionate about and to continue once they leave school, because it’s recognised that
participation in any activity outside the classroom will bring benefits. House leader, Nikita Horan, and head of the student council, Mckenzie Northcott, personify the ethos. Mckenzie is a national referee for netball, captain of the premier netball team and regularly helps out with community service projects. She was a driving force behind the Hingaia Gardens development in Karaka and has recently been awarded the Manu Kaewa School Leavers Scholarship from Waikato University. Nikita is a competitive hip-hop dancer, premier netball player and qualified New Zealand surf lifesaver. In August she competed in the final of her first pageant – Miss Auckland – raising money for Youthline. She also has two part-time jobs: teaching children to swim, and working at a retirement village in Pukekohe. She is currently studying for her final exams and hopes to study communication design at university next year. “Traditional assumptions about the inter-relationship between extracurricular activities and learning are now being supported by research showing there is indeed a link with student achievement and gains in maths, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking and verbal skills,” Mr O’Connor says. “Participation can improve motivation, concentration, confidence and teamwork. Whatever makes students feel good – and some get it from rugby, others from maths – will help them to learn well.”
When children at an early childhood centre use their imagination to create their own adventures, they absorb information through their senses. Developing curiosity helps them try new things, take risks and increases confidence. Early childhood education teachers are knowledgeable sources of information on child development and education. They put passion and time into planning and executing magical learning experiences which give children an opportunity to problem solve, express themselves, work as a team, ask questions and enhance their language skills. For children under two, engaging with a responsive and caring person is essential. It makes littles ones feel loved and happy, nurturing curiosity about the world and showing them how they fit in. It also helps them learn about emotions. Learning to share and control emotion at a young age gives an incredible head-start in life.
Three-year-olds won’t understand what firefighters do unless they meet one. Then, they can put out an imaginary fire with their teachers and friends. Children won’t remember to phone 111 unless they have playfully practiced it a few times. The same goes for literacy and numeracy skills – play prepares children for a lifetime of learning. If children are ready to write their name at age four, that’s great. But they might not be ready and that’s also great because children learn at different speeds. If your child is an amazing storyteller, that’s as important as being able to write his or her name. Why? Oral language is literacy. We want our children to leave our centres loving to learn, having confidence, asking questions, following instructions, concentrating, making friends, regulating their emotions, compromising and problemsolving. celebrity! Self confessed landlubber HELEN PERRY recently spent an afternoon on board luxury cruise ship the Celebrity Solstice and quickly decided this floating resort was just the thing to tempt her into enjoying a week or two on the ocean waves.
Passengers on board the cruise ship, celebrity Solstice sip some 188,100 martinis and 402,116 pina coladas during a typical season and I can see why – with temptations such as Blueberry Breeze or Smoke and Ginger at $US8.50 a pop, it would be all too easy to demolish one or two in a sitting. I’ve always had a taste for R&R, which features great food and wine and with celebrity Solstice offering both via a diverse range of restaurants, bars and cocktail lounges, there is surely something to satisfy every flavour penchant. In fact, readers hankering after a luxury holiday in a foodie’s paradise, where entertainment abounds, will find on-board facilities impressive. The list of fun activities is as long as my arm. However, I had to laugh when our ‘cruise director’ for the day regional manager nZ, Mark Kinchley indicated that a win in the

sumptuous casino often results in a shopping spree in the adjacent gallery of duty free stores. How I wished I could have shopped during my visit – I spotted at least three handbags which would go very nicely in my wardrobe. As a visitor, retail therapy wasn’t available but this was just one of the attractions that convinced me a few days at sea would be just the tonic and while the sunny climes of Tahiti, for example, would be most welcome, I began thinking a slow boat around Aotearoa, would be a great alternative. I was especially impressed by The Lawn club, a half-acre of freshly manicured lawn – yes, real lawn – on the top deck of the ship where intimate cabanas suggested this was the place to recline, (perhaps with one of those decadent cocktails in hand) and enjoy a feast of entertainment – an early evening movie, a little light jazz, or even a live glass-blowing demonstration.

Yes, this winter break worked a treat although one week just wasn’t enough. We have now decided to return and stay longer next year, something I can heartily recommend to others who, when winter takes its toll, need a cocktail of sun, heated swimming pool, beach walks, gastronomic delights, lazy ferry cruising and, naturally, a little shopping too!

Noosaville
Like always the arrival of summer feels so good but three months ago sun and surf seemed a million miles away to HELEN PERRY. Like many others she was dreaming of a holiday far from Auckland’s rain and looked to Australia for an answer.
I always manage to romp through June, start struggling with the weather as July sets in and then moan throughout August. By the beginning of September it may officially be spring, but biting winds, still more rain, and even last minute frosts leave me wanting out. So, this year, man about the house, sister-in-law and I headed for noosaville on Australia’s Sunshine coast where we expected to enjoy warmer climes, a laid back lifestyle and many foodie experiences whilst also catching up with old friends who go back to school and early working days. now, I’ve been to these parts several times. In fact, I was there just 18 months ago so this was not a sightseeing trip; it was all about relaxation and recharging my journo brain and keyboard fingers. With that in mind we were fussy about where we stayed. We wanted a two bedroom apartment, heated pool and a central location, handy to cafes and shops. Luckily, we found everything we wanted at The colonial Resort where accommodation overlooked either the lovely lagoon style, heated pool or the river front.

on Gympie Terrrace (with rear vehicle access from elizabeth Street) it was pretty well in the heart of noosaville, flanked by restaurants, shops and other local amenities. It was also managed by Kiwis, Kathie and Malcolm who went out of their way to make us welcome. Their background was intriguing “I grew up in Gisborne and was working in real estate when Malc, who was in banking, was sent from christchurch to our region for a few months. I helped organise his accommodation and things went from there. When Malc headed back to christchurch, I wasn’t far behind.” The couple married and had 13 years in the garden city, their idyllic life partially brought to an end by the devastating earthquake of February 2011. “While our house wasn’t badly damaged in did crack and there were months of uncertainty as insurances and the like were resolved. “We had been planning to move to noosa for several years but the earthquake prompted us
to put our plans on hold and remain in christchurch – we felt it was important to maintain our commitment to the city. However, after a time we were ready to pursue our long-held dream of relocating to noosaville, to take up resort management rights. We’re both keen on the outdoor life and everything was here to tempt us; we knew the lifestyle would suit us.” It was clear to me that noosaville did indeed suit this fit, healthy and extremely energetic couple. They now balance running the resort with an active lifestyle which includes triathlons and sailing but at no time are guests forgotten. Rather, they have made such an impact on visitors that many return year after year. With an elevator serving the river view units I can see the appeal for those not able to tackle stairs. However, we had no trouble with the very short flight to our family-sized apartment looking northwards over the pool. We had no trouble, either, making the most of our apartment’s facilities – two bathrooms served us well and I’m a stickler for comfy
beds; ours easily passed the test. The large, open plan kitchen, dining, lounge was attractively furnished and equipped. I loved that there were board games, playing cards and other items left for the use of guests – ideal when children are in tow and children are very welcome. Most days we took advantage of the covered deck either to lounge in the sun and read or to enjoy an early evening wine and antipasto platter before heading out for dinner later. yes, this winter break worked a treat although one week just wasn’t enough. Go WITH THe FLoW vARIeTy GALoRe Eating out is no hardship in Noosa – whether staying in the vicinity of Hastings Street, Noosaville, Noosa Junction or anywhere in between, cafes and restaurants abound but one in particular has HELEN PERRY wishing she had FLUX on her back doorstep. While noosa’s restaurant prices are pretty much on a par with new Zealand, even a tad dearer in many cases, the plethora of options from super causal to fine dining means there is pretty well something to suit most people and budgets. on my recent visit, staying in noosaville, the firm favourite was Flux, just a few strides from our colonial Resort accommodation on Gympie Terrace. decidedly casual with a tapas-style menu, it was right up my alley! on the first night we called at Flux, man about the house just wasn’t in the mood for tapas and after a pre-dinner drink we intended to move on! We were persuaded by a charming waiter to change our minds. So glad we did.

Second time round we repeated some dishes (crispy aubergine for sure) but added ti the mix fried chicken wings with go chu jang caramel and pan roasted duck breast with a confit of golden shallots, strawberries, aged balsamic and pink peppercorns. With the exception of the duck at $29.50, all our choices were between $7 and $15 and of ample sufficiency! Since returning home I’ve hankered after Flux…a lot. now, I’m full of optimism that some entrepreneurial chef might start up locally and bring to Franklin such innovative dishes instead of the same old, same old! I can but hope.

WITH JULIenne cRoUTon As Franklin grows, so too does the number of foodies making the district home. Table Talk is here to tell readers about happenings, and non-happenings, on the local dining scene.
foRE-sHoRE YoU’LL LoVE THIs IndIAn cHARmER It’s easy to forget that the Franklin district (as it was) also encompassed Maraetai so a week or so back I accompanied friends to this lovely seaside village to dine at Foreshore Indian Restaurant & Bar – yum-yum! now I’m a bit of a puss when it comes to the real flavours of India – yes, I’m guilty of loving all the street-style entrees and the milder dishes – the other half will gladly gobble up the hot and spicy! However, Foreshore, really took my fancy with its mix of traditional and modern Indian dishes. We shared, mixed entrees for two – big enough to be a meal! Followed by saagwalla, butter prawns, Goan fish curry and Foreshore’s secret chicken dish – so, so good and, we were told, not available elsewhere. There were many other temptations on this menu – chilli prawns and the button mushrooms sautéed with garlic and herbs appealed. The Indo-china selection looked interesting, too – next time,
perhaps. Fresh, attractive décor, glorious sea views, charming staff and, of course, a diverse menu… what more can one ask for?
APPLE oRcHARd dInInG KoREAn-sTYLE Having driven past this rural hideaway on several occasions in a bid to avoid the motorway crawl, I finally decided it was time to visit Apple orchard Korean Restaurant in drury’s, Fitzgerald Rd. open Friday to Sunday night only with two sittings (5.30pm to 7.30pm and 7.30pm to 9.30pm), I only realised this after booking a time smack bang in the middle of the early sitting. Thankfully, no one moved us on when the official time was up! Packed to the gunwales with mostly Asian diners, (we were almost shoulder to shoulder, but such a cheerful atmosphere), the large venue was simply furnished, comfortably warm and had great outside space which is sure to be popular in summer.
As it was, this buffet gave me no time to think of anything but the delicious array of food. I was familiar with some dishes, others were new to me. I’ve never been a fan of kimchi but, oh boy, those kimchi pancakes were something else! I could have eaten the lot (well, not really, but they sure were good). catering for a wide range of tastes, I didn’t see anyone missing out – soup, salads, seafood, sushi and seaweed (loved the latter); chicken pieces, yummy tempurastyle vegetables and, of course, fresh off the barbecue, succulent galbi (this time mini beef slices not short ribs) which everyone was tucking into. Service was efficient with tables cleared quickly when patrons departed. At $30 a head with reduced children’s prices, I’m going back. But, be warned, if it weren’t for the roadside sign, this gem could be easily missed. Located down a longish drive, there is plenty of parking out back but such is the crowd, it is in hot demand.
THAT’s VoLARE! This has to be one of my favs and not too far from home. Just love maitre d’, eddy, who seems to know everyone, and if he doesn’t, you’d never know. Located in The Gardens estate, Manurewa, volare is often heavily booked as was the case when friend and I met up there a week or so back at 6pm and were among the last to leave. That’s because there’s so much I like about this venue – dean Martin (but, of course, he’s in the mix), generous pizza-size garlic bread, the best caparccio (also substantial,) Trio del Mare (fish of the day, king prawns and calamari with salad), desserts which make me want the lot and, hoorah, Italian wines alongside local gems. Big enough for a crowd, intimate enough for two… that’s volare or if you will have it, amore, and you could say, ‘memories are made from this!”
WIne neAR THe vIneS: Who could resist that gorgeous Labour Weekend weather? It was the perfect time to be out and about and where better than John Hill estate for lunch? A leisurely and picturesque drive whichever way patrons motor, this venue is still little known to many folk yet, it offers a lovely vineyard setting, serves its own boutique wines and provides a easy-on-thepalate menu. Sauntering out there on Labour Weekend Sunday we three arrived soon after noon and were glad of our reservation – the restaurant

was fully booked. Service was prompt and genial, the hostess extremely obliging despite being busy. Two of us opted for the burger ($23) and what a pleasant surprise. no mince patty here, rather succulent pulled beef with a tasty selection of salads items (cheese, beetroot, greens, tomato) served on a ciabatta bun with a side of fries; very yum. But, oh my, did our guest ever have his hands full with a massive, slow roasted pork hock wrapped in crispy crackling ($29). Guest accessed
enough to keep him happy until dinner time but he wasn’t leaving that hock behind. It came home with us so it could be tackled less delicately later on. There’s plenty of this menu to please – perhaps it’s your time to try John Hill estate – including a bottle of their own wine.

Chocolate Nut & Seed Clusters Try these chocolatey nut and seed clusters; the perfect snack for indulging that sweet tooth.
Parmesan Seed Crackers
InGREdIEnTs • • • • • • •
1 cup Fresh Life sunflower seeds 1 cup Fresh Life pumpkin seeds 1 & 1/4 cup Fresh Life pecans 1 cup Fresh Life natural almonds 500g dark chocolate 1-2 Tbsp honey (optional) Pinch of sea salt
mETHod Roughly chop nuts and place them in a large non-stick frying pan with seeds. dry roast over a low heat until pumpkin seeds start to pop, continuously stirring with a wooden spoon to ensure no burning. Place in a mixing bowl and add a pinch of salt and honey if using. Reserve 1/4 cup of nut and seed mixture. Using the bain-marie method, gradually melt the chocolate. When fully melted, add the chocolate to the bowl of nuts and seeds and stir until all are evenly coated. on a lined baking tray, spoon the mixture into clusters. Sprinkle the remaining mixture over clusters to decorate and leave to set in the fridge for at least one hour. Store in an airtight container in the fridge, freezer or a cool pantry. www.southmagazine.co.nz

1/2 cup Fresh Life pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup Fresh Life sunflower seeds 1/3 cup Fresh Life sesame seeds 1/3 cup Fresh Life black chia seeds 1/3 cup linseed (flaxseed) 1 cup rolled oats 3/4 cup all purpose white flour 2 tsp salt 1 cup parmesan cheese, grated 1/2 cup rice bran oil 1 cup cold water
mETHod Preheat oven to 170°c. Mix all seeds, oats, sifted flour, salt and parmesan cheese in a bowl, then add the oil and
water and mix together well. cut two sheets of baking paper, each the length of your baking tray. Tip 1/3 of the mixture onto one of the sheets. Place the second sheet on top of the mixture and using a rolling pin, roll out as thinly as possible (to around 3 – 4mm thickness). Remove top layer of baking paper and trim the edges of the mixture to form a large rectangle. Repeat with the remaining mixture as required. Place on baking tray (with baking paper underneath) and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until crisp and golden. Remove from oven and slice into 5cm squares. Place on wire rack to cool. Serve as soon as they are cool or store in an airtight container. If some of the crackers are still a little soft return them to the oven to crisp up. Any excess mixture can be wrapped and frozen until needed. south | november 2018 |

garden project
children may sing ‘ring a ring of roses, a pocketful of posies’ but, beyond that, gardening is not usually an avid interest especially among teenagers although a college horticulture course was the catalyst for one young local woman embarking on a career path she never imagined. HeLen PeRRy talked to Zara Hill, who hopes her entry into the nZ Flower and Garden Show (nov 28-dec 2) will impress judges.
Unitec student Zara Hill surprised herself last year when construction leftovers to planters – her entry in the upcycle category of the nZ Flower and Garden Show – scored a bronze medal. Spurred by that success, this year friends and family have been pressed to help the former Pukekohe christian college student gather hundreds of bottle tops and a good many Pringle potato chip cylinders for her 2018 show entry in the same category. “It was all a bit rushed last year I found out about the event quite late and only entered because in my landscape architecture course most things are done as a group; I wanted to design something that was all mine and see how it would go. I was stunned when I won bronze in the student class.” chatting over coffee it is evident the 22-year-old, who was raised in Tuakau, is not one to grandstand – but gradually she reveals herself as a quiet achiever, someone determined to follow her own path. “My family keep the lawns mowed but none of them are gardeners so I’ve taken it upon myself to do what needs to be done and I really enjoy it. The same goes for friends; talking about gardens isn’t quite the same as computer games or chat apps.” originally Zara’s heart was with animals. “I really wanted to be a vet but at college in Pukekohe I did a home study horticulture course and was then involved in a project building a model home. That’s when I became interested in the way we plan spaces and rooms.”

Zara went on to complete a Bachelor or Architecture but when her papers included elements of landscaping it satisfied her appreciation of plants and she became keen on planning different spaces and rooms, ‘outdoor rooms.’ “After finished my degree [two years at Auckland University and one at Unitec] I decided to carry on with landscape architecture. I’ve been able to cross credit some papers so it’s only taking another six months.” entering the upcycle category at the nZ Flower and Garden Show was a “no brainer” for the green-fingered student who says when it comes to recycling and conservation she likes to do things properly. “I get annoyed when plastic containers aren’t washed or are put in the wrong rubbish bin,” she says. “The category at the show seems to suit me.” And doing things ‘properly’ also translates to her interest in gardening. “Most landscape designers just want to design the garden but I like the weeding and maintenance side too. I don’t mind taking on that responsibility; I’ve been doing a bit of gardening for friends to help pay for my studies and I’ve even designed a garden for an omaha beach property. “There were quite strict rules to what I could do but I liked the challenge of coastal planting. However, the house isn’t built yet so it’ll be quite a while before it’s [the garden plan] actioned…if at all!”
now, with the flower and garden show growing closer, Zara’s design is well underway. Smaller than last year, she’s finding it more manageable. “Last year was a bit of an undertaking for someone new to it like me. In fact, they [the organisers] started to worry I wouldn’t make it; even thought I’d
pulled out at one stage but I got there in the end.” This year Zara is creating a fairy garden reusing such materials as a wire sprung bed frame, pallets, an old wheelbarrow, a birdcage, saucepans and, of course, all those bottle caps for a pathway and the Pringle cyclinders – “they’ll make great mushrooms; I can just see it.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

GARdeneR on RoLL A musician, dean Saunders once played bass for ‘Plain Jane’; his work these days is anything but plain, as Jon RAWLInSon reveals.
When the music stops, whose gardens will be good as gold? We’ll have to wait until judges at the nZ flower & Garden show reach their decision, during which landscape designer, dean saunders, hopes his efforts will prove to be music to their ears. “I was a musician before I became a designer,” the outlook Landscapes’ owner says. “This year, our brief ties into my musical background. We’ve taken design elements (the look and sound) from the guitar and tried to encapsulate them in the garden.” Inspired by the 1962 fender jaguar guitar, the mIT graduate’s garden is expected to resonate sophistication and style. named Risonanza sonora (translates as: sonic Resonance), the design is typical of dean’s style. “A lot of our designs are very European – you don’t see a lot of that in the market these days. If I had my own dream garden, it would be like something more common to the fringes of Italy or outskirts of Paris – very formal, traditional and symmetrical.” He may not have a gold record but dean does have a bronze award to his name, awarded at last year’s flower & Garden show where, up against tight competition, every detail counts.

While hoping for second time success, Zara is modest about her chances. “Who knows what I’ll be up against? I’m just enjoying the chance to be creative. It would be lovely to do well and next year it could help get me a job which will grow my experience and skill. Who knows?” www.southmagazine.co.nz
“It was quite surreal. All last year’s judges had won gold at chelsea [flower show] so the standard was tremendously high and the competition extremely tough. You’re up against seasoned pros, people who travel the world competing,” he says. “I learnt plenty from it, being our first event. fundamentally, the exhibit was focused on overall look – it was a small, European courtyard with a fireplace at its
centre – so our planting wasn’t as elaborate as it will be this time.” While some designers have large teams to assist, to those (such as dean) with fewer pairs of hands, time management during setup is crucial; especially considering Risonanza sonora will cover a larger space than his 2017 entry. dean’s growing enthusiasm began in a city renowned for its gardens. “Long before I wanted to do design as a career, I loved the aesthetics of melbourne, which are amazing – the architecture and the gardens. seeing that every day was very inspiring. “my nana was a very keen gardener with an absolutely gorgeous garden. she taught me a lot about plants. I guess that’s where my love of gardening grew from. she grew a lot of flowers but it wasn’t a typical ‘nana-ry garden’, everything was in its place, it was pristine, wellplanned and ordered.” After moving to Auckland (aged 15) dean completed a landscape design course at manukau Institute of Technology (mIT). He has since designed and maintained gardens throughout the super city – from residential gardens to school, business and industrial grounds.

I’m lucky that, these days, I can pick and choose which projects I take on but I secured plenty of work as a result of last year’s show, it was very good for business.”
“I started maintaining the grounds at mIT’s campuses after I graduated and, later, redesigned all the gardens as well. One of the things an employer can do is to include in their policies, guidelines on the parties’ health and safety obligations when working from home. This may include a requirement that the employee makes ensures the home workspace is comfortable and ergonomically sound, that they take regular breaks, and that their workspace is free from hazards. Working remotely also has an additional risk of data security. An employer’s policies should take into account how communications, whether through email or otherwise, are kept secure.

‘Fleet’ Jane – Rutherford splits the water The dragons are coming and they’re not just any other bunch of ‘something-or-other’ Aucklanders either. Through raw grit and skill, the Jaffettes dragon boat team is all fired up about the season ahead, as JON RAWLINSON discovered when chatting to team treasurer, Jane Rutherford.
you’d have to be deeply dippy to be up at the crack of dawn to brave the Southern Motorway from Pokeno to Westhaven only to sweat bullets despite the morning chill. And yet, Jane Rutherford is far from wet behind the ears. “I first heard about dragon boat racing roughly seven years ago. I had a go and just loved it! It’s really nice to be out on the water, focused on your technique and keeping in time; it’s quite meditative,” the experienced paddler says. “you meet so many wonderful people, not just in your own team but across the dragon boat community. There’s an amazing mix of people involved from a wide range of ages and backgrounds.” originally from dunedin, Jane moved to Auckland 15 years ago, at last laying anchor in Pokeno in March. Today, this Southern girl is a proud Jaffette. Although it is an amateur sport, dragon boat racing requires professional efforts to ensure crew are in top shape and Bristol fashion; to claim a spot on the podium, it’s a case of: ‘no train, no gain’. “our hard work really paid off earlier this year. We won all golds in our standard 20-man boat [200m, 500m and 2km events of the Women’s Premier A division] at regionals and nationals,” Jane confirms. “We’d never won a gold medal before so it was pretty shocking and amazing to claim a clean sweep.” With the 2018-19 season underway, all strokes lead to Lake Pupuke (new Zealand dragon Boat regional finals) and Lake Karapiro (national champs) where the Jaffettes hope to defend all three of their titles. “Karapiro is a great venue and cheaper to get to than the South Island where last year’s national were held,” says Jane. “We’re definitely aiming to do the same again; we’ll work hard to keep our title and we’d love to win more golds.”

While it may be just another step along the way, the Auckland Anniversary Regatta (January 28) will give plenty of Super city landlubbers the chance to check out dragon boats in action. “Anniversary Weekend definitely is [a showpiece event]. We race from Auckland viaduct, which is really cool because there will be plenty of people watching. It’s a great way to promote the sport.” Any promotion comes in handy, particularly when simply reaching the start line can depend on supporters and participants digging deep into their pockets. Fortunately, as a financial analyst for Spark, Jane is used to playing by the numbers. “It’s a good fit, managing the budgets, the money. We’re focused on fundraising for the current season – and some new equipment – but we’d love to take the Jaffettes overseas a bit more; we have no solid plans but that would be our next goal,” the Jaffettes’ treasurer says. “We’d have to sizzle a lot of sausages to get to Hong Kong [for June’s International dragon Boat Festival), for sure! It’ll come down to how much (if anything) is left at the end of the season and how much we can all put in ourselves.” Although Jane didn’t make the trip herself, the Jaffettes competed across the ditch at 2016’s club crew World championships. Should they take their onboard skills abroad again next year, the crew will face top cut competition. “I have been to a couple of international events in the past, with the [mixed crew] Random Jaffas to Hong Kong and Hawaii. Hong Kong was very well organised; it was amazing competing against teams from all over the world. It’s definitely a step up.”

dRAGon BoATInG – nAUTIcAL By nATURe Just as rugby isn’t as simple as ‘catch and pass’, dragon boat racing has more depth to it than first meets the eye. Jockeying for position over 200, 500 metre and 2 kilometre courses, crews of 20 (plus a drummer setting the pace and a sweep, steering) requires all hands to the paddle (well, almost) to claim the ‘gong’. Small boats (10 paddlers plus drummer and sweep) also compete. However, providing they’re committed to the sport, even novice crew members can quickly learn the ropes, reaching a level where they can ‘pull their own water,’ Pokeno competitor, Jane Rutherford, says. “It’s not a motion that comes naturally to people who have experience rowing or kayaking, it’s very different. In general, it takes a few months to get up to speed but, in saying that, even now I’m still perfecting my technique – each season you pick up a little more.” Initially taking her place near the front of her boat, Jane now puts in a stern effort as part of the Aucklandbased Jaffettes’ aft-ter burners. “I’m probably a bit stronger on the right side of the boat but I can do both. go up front where the focus is all on timing, setting the pace. now, I’m down the back, which we call the powerhouse. The water’s a lot messier back there so we do need to work harder.”

Similar to cricket, differing mixtures of raw power and tactics are required in the sport.
“I started waka racing earlier this year. our dragon boat team did some training at a gym where the owner was involved so I ended up joining the Pineula team,” she says.
“Two hundred metre races are fast and furious and over before you know it. It’s harder to keep up such a fast pace over 500 metres and there are more technical aspects involved,” Jane explains. Set over a circular course, with teams starting at five second intervals, the two kilometre races demand more endurance and adaptability. “The 2km is very different. There are a lot of rules covering when and how you can pass and penalties if you break them. We have to adapt to how the race is progressing a lot more and the drummer is critical in relaying instructions so the whole crew knows what to do.” The Jaffettes usually train on salt water but a little fresh thinking can prove essential. “In salt water the boats are more buoyant so it is easier to get the boat up and moving than in fresh water. Sometimes we drag a weight out the back for extra resistance and we do extra trainings at Lake

“Waka ama (outrigger canoes) are quite different. For one thing, we change sides when paddling because we’re in single file, whereas it’s two to a seat in dragon boats. While there are sprints as well, waka races can cover much longer distances – sometimes more than 30km – so there’s a lot of hard work but a lot of fun.” despite being a relatively new waka ama recruit, Jane hopes to be part of the team at March’s sprint nationals.

By Alistair Davidson All the action was off the track at Pukekohe Park Raceway on Sunday, October 21, when several hundred hot rods, classic cars and motorcycles rolled into town for the inaugural NZ Petrolhead Kruize to the Park. This monthly breakfast gathering attracted a fascinating mix of special interest vehicles from Whangarei and Rotorua, including the latest Chevy Camaro to a classic Anglia estate and everything in between. The car display area also featured a vintage market, a swap meet, and cars for sale area. Food trucks and coffee carts did a roaring trade, with families sitting under the trees enjoying their breakfasts. Kruize to the Park returns to Pukekohe Park Raceway on Sunday, November 18, from 8.00am to noon. All special interest vehicles are welcome, no pre-entry required, just roll up on the day. Participant and public entry is $5, under 15s free. Market and swap sites are $20.
