Mother love Mother’s Day is almost here, a time when we formally stop to acknowledge our mother’s love and care while also expressing our own love and appreciation. My own mother passed away 23 years ago and there are few days when I don’t think of her. What’s more, as I age my appreciation keeps growing as does my regret that I never seemed to take as much time as I should to tell her how much she was loved. When young and busy, it’s all too easy to overlook the personal challenges our mums have faced. My mother came to NZ in 1931, a 19-year-old from Finland. She spoke no English, had no idea of what the sea journey would entail or that it would be 40 years before she saw her homeland again. She worked incredibly hard, learnt to read and write English well (although her accent could raise a few laughs), married late in life for those days – 35 – and was 40 when I was born. She was widowed when I was 14 and my sister 18. There was no insurance yet she paid off our home on a widow’s pension, ensured we had the latest fashion

on the cover COME FLY WITH US! Almost a century since the last shot was fired in ‘the war to end all wars’, there have been many more of ‘the few’ to whom we many owe so much. For this reason alone, the role Warbirds plays in ensuring the most catastrophic times past are not forgotten is to be applauded. She cooked, sewed, knitted bottled, cleaned, painted and maintained our weatherboard bungalow in pristine condition – at 75 she was still up a ladder painting the ceilings! I share this snapshot of my amazing mum in the hope that whatever life brings, readers will look at their own mums and take a moment to appreciate the roads they have travelled. Come, Mum’s Day, remember to say ‘thank-you’ for all the care provided. Furthermore, if you’re a mum too, reflect on the love you have for your children, then put your feet up, relax and enjoy SOUTH!

Warbirds At Ardmore

There was no sign of Snoopy (or the Red Baron for that matter!), but vintage aircraft enthusiasts a-plenty flocked to Ardmore recently for the ‘launch’ of a new exhibition. Featuring replicas of a British B.E.2 bi-plane and German Fokker (similar to the one flown by the infamous Baron Von Richthofen), the NZ Warbirds at Ardmore Heritage Centre looks set to preserve the history of those brave few who flew. By all accounts, the opening went ‘great guns’, as these photos by South’s ‘hot-shot’, photographer Wayne Martin, reveal.

A comic take on Dickensian Britain, this romantic musical is set in a time when gin palaces came close to drowning the poor. Named the Best Overall Show at the victoria Fringe Festival in Canada last year, this rollicking tale follows on from OSPA’s 10-year anniversary variety show (April 20 & 21). Arnet Law

Part of the Pukekohe legal scene since 2010, Arnet Law was started by Gavin Arnet as sole practitioner. He was joined by his first staff member in 2011 and in 2015 the firm took on its first additional lawyer. Essentially, it has taken on a new lawyer every year since. Four lawyers are now based in Pukekohe – Sayuree Ram and Gavin are the commercial/property and trust team while Miriam Arnet and Sarah Hagenson, make up the litigation team, practising mainly in the areas of relationship property, care of children, domestic violence and estate claims. Unlike many law firms, Arnet Law prefers to employ multiple lawyers with fewer support staff to ensure clients can always talk to the lawyer handling their matter, and that the client’s lawyer is always up to speed with their clients’ particular issue. SOUTH asked Gavin to explain more about his practice. Pukekohe and surrounds are growing fast with thousands of new residents expected to move into the area over the next five years or so. Is this population explosion putting pressure on you as a law firm or does it herald expansion on your part? The expansion of Pukekohe and surrounding areas is great for many local businesses. Our own growth has been exciting. This expansion does put pressure on us but we are making sure we use technology to the best of our ability and that we have the right staffing levels to keep our clients happy. With the surge in new building, do people need to seek legal advice before signing building contracts with reputable companies or are those issued by recognised building companies generally ‘fairly standard’ and ‘pretty safe’? Absolutely, and we encourage this. Building a new home is a big decision to make and, to be honest, it’s not for the faint hearted. There is a lot involved; it’s very time consuming and there is a lot to the contract. Most contracts are very standard yet there are always things that people say they don’t understand, or that they weren’t expecting. Knowledge is power, as they say, and it’s important that people take advice and ensure they understand what they are signing up to, particularly when a building a home is often the biggest investment they will ever make. How important is it for people to seek the services of a locallybased law firm, particularly with regards to property? What benefit

or family members, will often use family trusts as a way of ensuring their wishes are fulfilled on death.

We know Franklin. Using us means clients can benefit from local knowledge. We have an understanding of local projects, planned infrastructure, local conditions and more which firms outside Franklin don’t usually have. We also have relationships with other relevant local experts and can tap into their knowledge for the benefit of our clients. We know the questions to ask and who to ask.

Trusts established a long time ago can give some protection in retirement years however, it is unlikely that if you form a trust now you would not have to pay for your care in later years.

In light of the Government re-assessing family trusts in recent years is there any point in the average couple having a trust even when they might own say one investment property? And, if they do will a simple trust protect their assets in their retirement years? There were significant changes to trust law, particularly concerning gifting and the payment of rest home subsidies under the last National government. If someone is self employed, or one party to a relationship is self employed then we would almost always recommend having a trust as a form of asset protection. If neither party is self employed then they have very little or no risk to their daily lives and trusts are less likely to be beneficial for them. However, there are more reasons for having trusts than asset protection. Trusts are a very useful estate planning mechanism, people with strained relationships with children,

How important is it for young, single people, who are not in a relationship, to have a will and why? Making a will is very simple, and relatively cheap. Nowadays, with Kiwisaver and the like, most people have an asset on death that needs to be dealt with. Having a will means you have a say on what happens to your asset on your death. If you have assets when you die and no will, the tidying up of your affairs, once you are gone, is much more complicated. How important is it for couples intending to marry to have a property agreement? What about for couples who aren’t thinking about marriage but have moved in together but have few assets? Couples in these situations may not necessarily need a Contracting Out Agreement or “Prenup,” however, we recommend they carefully consider whether they should have one and seek advice. The Property (Relationships) Act 1976 provides in general terms that after a couple have been in a relationship for three years (whether they are married or de facto, gay or straight) all assets that are used for relationship

purposes become jointly owned. There are always exceptions to the general rule and specific advice is needed, case by case. However, if you want to ensure that upon a relationship not lasting the test of time, you can leave the relationship with the assets you came with, then you should have a Contracting Out Agreement. Some people think to buy a lifestyle block of several acres with the idea of subdividing in the future, sometimes just to accommodate family members. How important is it for them to seek proper advice before purchasing land for such purposes and why? Subdivision rules are very complicated, and subdivision is not easily done. If this is your intention it is imperative to seek the correct advice, not only from a lawyer, but from a planner or surveyor and an accountant. Your firm specialises in commercial, property and family law but can you help with other legal issues? Criminal, for example? If not, can you recommend other law firms who can handle matters outside your area of expertise? Absolutely! We have recently had a criminal barrister join us at our premises. He works for himself and is a few doors along the hallway. For civil litigation and other matters we have great relationships with a number of barristers so that we can ensure all our clients’ needs are met.

The phrase, ‘crowning glory’, could have been invented to describe the magnificence of 22-year-old Imogen Marshall’s hair. It’s rare to see such a natural, unadulterated mane which perfectly matches her creamy skin and bright blue eyes.

But even if Imogen isn’t crowned, she says taking part in the competition has been great fun and worth every minute.

Contestants are encouraged to volunteer, fundraise and involve themselves in their local

communities and charities not just for the duration of the competition but as a lifestyle. It’s something Imogen, who teaches swimming to youngsters at Franklin Leisure Centre while studying for a nursing degree (with aspirations to become a paediatric or neonatal nurse) has embraced wholeheartedly. “I entered Miss Auckland in 2016, mainly as a confidence booster; something a bit different, a different way of performing from dance. It was awesome to meet loads of new people and I ended up with the Friendship Award.”

The pageant gave Imogen the springboard to enter the glamorous Miss World New Zealand pageant, the final of which will be held at SkyCity Convention Centre on May 5. “The winner will go on to the Miss World final in China but there are 12 international titles also awarded on the night so we will all have an opportunity to represent New Zealand overseas. I’m hoping to win Miss Grand so I can compete in Myanmar in November.” A former student of ballet, jazz and contemporary dance at Pukekohe’s 8Count Dance Studio (formerly www.southmagazine.co.nz

Nickyâ€™s School of Dance), Imogen started dancing when she was six. â€œI worked through my grades as well as dancing and choreographing with Pukekohe Performing Arts at the Harrington Theatre,â€? she says â€œI had lessons four or five times a week after school but, hard as it was, I realised I didnâ€™t have what it takes to make a career from it.â€? However, her dance training should stand her in good stead for the Miss World NZ contest as dancing (in heels) plays a part in the spectacular grand final in May. Miss World New Zealand 2018 will be the 47th edition of the Miss World New Zealand pageant when the outgoing Miss World New Zealand, Annie Evans, will crown her successor as the next representative of her country to Miss World. Miss World New Zealand 2018 will then represent the country at Miss World 2018 hoping to succeed Manushi Chhillar as the next Miss World.

New Zealand has never won the Miss World crown yet, but came close to winning in 1997 when Lauralee Martinovich finished first runner-up.

The grand finale represents the culmination of a three-month long series of challenges for the contestants including making speeches, giving interviews, a talent event and a sports day. There was also a â€˜head to headâ€™ between teams who were given a topic to debate in front of a camera.

Imogen has staved off buying her cocktail and evening dresses to the last minute while she shapes up. Her fitness regime includes early morning spin classes and twice-daily visits to the gym at Counties Fitness in addition to one-on-one sessions with personal trainer, Nigel Fromm.

Judges have been awarding points to the women at each of the challenges but their final scores will be decided by public votes via Facebook. Imogen will have three special outfits for the final including a national-themed costume. Hers is being made by Tauranga designer, Jo Marie, who regularly competes in the World of Wearable Arts. She will also wear a cocktail dress and an evening dress. Whilst swimwear is not part of

â€œI canâ€™t wait till I can enjoy a pizza again and some chocolate instead of vegetables, vegetables and more vegetables,â€? she says with a laugh. Unlike beauty contests of old, Imogen stresses that todayâ€™s pageants are not so much about what contestants look like on the outside but about the beauty within. â€œItâ€™s so different now. Yes, it is important how you look, but that isnâ€™t going to get you far. Itâ€™s about how much effort youâ€™ve put

into your charity work and helping others.â€? Imogen and her fellow contestants have been raising money for â€˜Annieâ€™s Lifelineâ€™, the chosen charity for Miss World NZâ€™s Beauty with a Purpose. It was started by the current Miss World NZ, Annie Evans, and raises money for scholarships for suicide survivors. â€œI donâ€™t think there is anything negative about the competition. Although Iâ€™m obviously working hard towards winning, Iâ€™m not getting my hopes up. Itâ€™s been such an amazing experience meeting some wonderful people who will be friends for life.â€? The competition cut-off age is 25 so if she doesnâ€™t win this year, Imogen says sheâ€™ll have another couple of stabs at the title. â€œEvery year I change; Iâ€™m still finding myself. I know that sounds really clichĂŠd but itâ€™s true. The more friends you make the more experiences you have and Iâ€™m only 22, so I still have plenty of time.â€?

Mix together soy and honey, lemon, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and sesame oil. Marinate the Rangitikei chicken drumsticks for three hours. Place in a roasting tin, cover with foil and roast in the oven at 180 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and cook for a further 25 minutes or until the marinade has reduced and glazed the chicken drumsticks. Garnish with some toasted sesame seeds and chopped spring onion.

Cook the rice following packet instructions. To make the stir fry, combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil and garlic in a large frypan and sauté until slightly golden. Add the chicken and stir fry until cooked through. Add the beans, preserved olive, or black bean sauce, chilli flakes and pepper and stir fry for about 30 seconds until the beans are not raw but still crunchy. Add the rice wine, soy and pepper, and remove from the heat. Serve immediately with steamed rice. cR0095

Wildlife thrives in park Most city-siders in the heart of an urban environment such as Sydney, could expect to go a long way to see the kind of wildlife normally associated with the great outdoors including Kiwis familiar with this ‘neighbouring’ Australian metropolis. Yet, visitors to Sydney Park – a former industrial wasteland just eight kilometres from the Sydney Opera House – have spotted everything from owls to emeraldspotted tree frogs, peregrine falcons to blue-tongue lizards and migratory birds from Siberia. Made up of 40 hectares this fascinating park is now a thriving ecosystem off lush grass, landscaped gardens, rolling hills, streams, meandering pathways and picturesque wetlands, providing habitat for native bats, birds, bugs, fronts, turtles and plants. Last month the local community was asked to become citizen scientists for a weekend to help discover even more species of plants and animals living in the park.

Photos Gokay Gul One scientist who took part in the event, Associate Professor Dieter Hochuli from the Sydney University School of Life and Environmental Sciences, said cities tend to be pretty hostile environments for nature. “But there’s a really remarkable group of animals and plants that not only get past these [urban] pressures, but thrive in them.

“Here [Sydney Park] we have a park that gives native plants a space to grow, a habitat for animals to thrive and a place for locals and visitors to enjoy.” Although Sydney Park is known to be home to many species of birds, bats and reptiles, Professor Hochuli said there were many other creatures and insects in the park which hopefully would be

documented during the bioblitz. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the city had long aimed to strike the right balance in providing native habitat and recreation spaces for visitors in Sydney Park. “This kind of urban biodiversity is a vital part of creating a healthy city which is why the park is important”.

Developing talent opens doors Beyond the stereotypes, away from the politics and in spite of fears which too many encourage us all to perpetuate, there is art and there is community. Recently, JON RAWLINSON spoke with a local artist to whom community and photography are inextricably linked. William Blake wrote about them, Aldous Huxley ‘experimented’ with them and Jim Morrison encouraged us all to break on through to another side of them. In a world in which too many people close doors (and even build walls), it’s refreshing to find someone intent (albeit metaphorically) on knocking them down! Through her upcoming solo exhibition, Te Raki, Pukekohe North local, Raemon Matene (Nga Puhi, Waikato-Tainui), will share a documentary photographic collection spanning five years. In particular, her Doors of Potential series – which sees successful locals on their own front doorsteps – will reveal that there is much more to our community than a superficial glance may suggest. “The exhibition really comes down to ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’,” Raemon explains. “I went to Valley School [Pukekohe} but,

for the last 20 years, I’ve lived in Pukekohe North. I’ve seen some amazing talent come from this area, especially on the sports’ fields. “I get annoyed about the stigma associated with this area. At WINZ, they have an A4 picture of the Pukekohe Policing Unit and it outlines all of Pukekohe North! Is that how we’re meant to be represented? We’re much more than that.” With plenty of new houses dotting the landscape, Raemon believes it’s becoming even more important to preserve community while sharing the truth of its people with new arrivals. “I think there’s value in capturing a moment in time – whether it’s planned or not, there’s value. Especially with images I’ve taken on the [Nga Hau E Wha O] Marae of kaumatua who have passed on,” she says. “I never planned to do portraiture but people are just so interesting,

and that’s why I stay here; the people are awesome!”

Despite leaving school aged 14, Raemon studied photography at Manukau Institute of Technology, following a passion which stemmed from taking snaps with her dad’s old Polaroid as a youngster.

“A lot of my mahi [work] is in the [Pukekohe] community. I’m secretary here at the Marae, on the Pukekohe North School board of trustees and I’m communications manager for the Franklin Storm Rugby League team. It’s a busy life!

While she believes she hasn’t encountered any more obstacles in sharing her voice as a Maori woman, than perhaps she would otherwise, Raemon encourages all Maori creatives to stand up and be counted.

“I cover weddings, mostly for locals, because it’s so expensive to hire a photographer these days. Mostly, I just ask for a koha [donation]... [but] I’d love to be a professional one day, I really would.”

“The art world is pretty cool; they’ll judge you on [the quality of] your art rather than whether you’re a woman or a man, or if you’re Maori or not,” she says. “I think more [Maori artists] need to step forward because there is so much beautiful work out there which isn’t being shared as it should be.”

She hopes her upcoming exhibition will be the first of many. “Nansi [Thompson, gallery co-ordinator] has asked me to exhibit for a couple of years but I suppose I just wasn’t ready. It’s just worked out now is the right time.

Swinging in the rain! A childhood passion for designing and sewing Barbie doll clothes was probably the ﬁrst indication that some aspect of couture would likely ﬁgure in Camila Dixon’s future and, so it has, as HELEN PERRY explains. Fashion and clothing have always been a part of Camila dixon’s life – her father was a textile chemist and as a young girl she accompanied him to factories and laundries where she gained a solid education in fabrics and their wash capabilities. At 15 she was given her own sewing machine and quickly progressed from making doll’s clothes to designing and making her own clothes. Now, more than 20 years later, the Colombian-born, South African-raised creative is behind a range of water-proof rain jackets which scream ‘style!’ “My husband, a clothing performance designer, and I moved to New Zealand from durban in 2016 with our son and daughter, settling in Eastern Beach. We are very much into

garment design and he offered great advice when it came to the technical side of this venture.” Coming from South Africa where warm, dry weather is a given for much of the year, Camila says it was the many weeks of rain she experienced during her first Auckland winter that inspired her to think about the rainwear business. “I was a bit taken back by just how much it rained that first year just when we were loving the country and dying to get out and explore. Needing coats, I tried several styles but some left us hot and sweaty, some were uncomfortable and others just didn’t keep out the wet. “I thought I’d like to produce something that was fun, bright and did the job properly. Young Plummer plies his trade Some aspire to meet their heroes; others, to defeat them. Karakaraised, Harry Plummer, might still have a way to go but the plucky young fly-half is certainly heading in the right direction. “Following your idols is a good way to go,” he says. “Last year, playing [in the Mitre 10 Cup] against guys like Richie Mo’unga, Mitch Hunt and Mike Delany, made me realise I’m getting closer to my goal. There comes a point where, while you can still look up to your heroes, you need to see them as equals.” Achieving his goals (both literally and figuratively) led this former Te Hihi schoolboy to be selected as vice captain for the ‘Baby Blacks’ ahead of the Oceania Rugby Under 20 Championships. “It’s a huge vote of confidence. I co-captained the Blues’ Under 20s and, as a 10, you need solid leadership skills to lead a backline regardless,” he says. “You always have to be confident pulling on a black jersey. We have a good side so, if we play to our strengths, hopefully it’ll go our way.” Due to Under 20s’ selection criteria – which results in a regular turnover of players – it’s extremely difficult to know which team has the edge in any given season. However, the Kiwi up-and-comers have claimed top honours each year since the annual Oceania tournament began in 2015.

Afterwards, providing he makes the cut, Harry will then head to France for the World Rugby Under 20s Championships – New Zealand teams have won six of these 10 competitions to date. The squad will likely benefit from the experience of a few ‘old’ hands, who were part of last year’s winning run, Harry confirms. “It’ll definitely be very handy. They obviously did something right to win last year, and win so convincingly. But we won’t be trying to replicate [the efforts] of anyone else. We have our own world championship to win; if we do that, we’ll have done our job.” Now underway, Oceania concludes May 6; the World champs run May 30 – June 17.

Aspirations (All) Blacks & Blues Despite growing up in Counties Manukau and Chiefs’ territory, Harry donned Auckland’s blue and white hoops during the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup, claiming three caps. “As far back as I can remember, I cheered for Auckland, mainly because that’s where Dad’s from, but we did go to a lot of Steelers’ games too,” he says.

“Auckland’s last game against Canterbury was my first start. The guys had a bumpy season with a lot of injuries and had been through about seven first-fives. I wasn’t expecting [to start] but playing with, and against, a lot of Super Rugby players and All Blacks definitely motivated me to train harder, and it reminded me that the next step up is a pretty big one.” During this year’s cup campaign, the former NZ Schoolboys’ first-five hopes to develop his skills further, putting as much game time under his belt as possible. Since the halcyon days of Carlos Spencer’s tenure at 10, both Auckland’s provincial squad and the Blues have struggled to find a comparable successor; perhaps a young Plummer could become their ‘Mr fix-it’, I suggest. “Only time will tell, but I’m really excited about fulfilling that role one day; I’d be really happy to take that challenge on. The Blues have been a lot like Auckland, very supportive of me. Being in their environment for 10 weeks [during a training camp earlier this year] was very humbling. To be offered a spot with them would be quite a thrill.” A keen student of the game, Harry’s a fan of current and former All Blacks, Beauden Barrett and Daniel Carter. I suggest that if keeps tracking the way he is, one day, Barrett and Carter could become Plummer fans.

“That would be pretty cool!” He laughs. “Obviously Beauden’s changed the game in terms of his attacking style. He’s proven there’s no substitute for speed and the ability to find space using attacking kicks. I’ve learnt a lot from watching him in particular.” Of course, it’s a long way to the top if you want to foot it with footie’s best but it’s clear this young hopeful is on the right track. “[Becoming an All Black] is definitely the main goal,” he confirms. “Obviously, time will tell and situations may change. You definitely have to be [realistic] about it, but I hope to stay in New Zealand and live up to my aspirations.” Regardless of whether his ambitions to pass (in an All Black backline) are realised, a scholarship through Auckland rugby should help him pass his studies as he works towards securing a BCom at AUT. “Mum and Dad always said that, if I could get my education paid for through rugby, then I will have done pretty well,” he adds. “Having experienced a couple of injuries already, it’s pretty scary to think that it could be all over in the space of just one game. These days, rugby careers can be pretty short so you have to have something to fall back on.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

PLUMMERS IN UNION Pulling into a rural Karaka driveway about five years back, I wasn’t sure if I was in the right place, until I saw the goalposts in the front yard, that is. I was set to interview (then) Blues physio, Mark Plummer, but soon realised there was a good chance I’d be looking to chat with a younger member of his ‘team’ soon enough. Since then, Mark’s son, Harry, has been tackling rugby’s career milestones one by one. “Dad’s known the game inside out for 15 plus years so he’s been an awesome resource to draw on – and not just when I’ve been injured,” Harry says. “Both my parents have been really supportive. They’ve never pushed us into anything and backed us to the hilt. If we’re happy, they’re happy.” Mark (who is still physio for Auckland’s Mitre 10 Cup side) and Harry’s mother, Jo (a former New Zealand water polo rep’) are justifiably rapt with their lad’s accomplishments to date. They are also proud of his siblings, all of whom are active in sport. “My sister, Piper, is a bit of a superstar shooter in her intermediate netball team; my little brother, Ben, is vice captain of Saint Peter’s first eleven cricket team and my older brother, Josh, plays cricket for Papatoetoe.” I ask if there’s any chance the Plummers will become Auckland’s answer to old Smiley Barrett’s brood. “Hopefully, but probably not,” he laughs. “I’ve tried to persuade my brothers to focus on rugby but I don’t think that’ll happen!” The support of a partner who’s an accomplished sportsperson herself (showjumper, laura Inkster) has helped Harry secure a degree of ‘home ground advantage’, it seems. “laura understands the pressure involved with sport, dealing with time away from home, and that, however hard you work things can always go wrong on the day. Her support has been invaluable.”

The number of building consents issued in Auckland remains strong with the annual pace of growth accelerating to 15%. With population growth slowing, and building consents continuing to increase, the gap between the two is reducing, however, despite the high build-rates, the shortfall of housing will still take several years to be eroded. Mortgage lending rates have remained pretty flat and, as the retail banks remain in tight competition for market share, some early signs of offshore funding pressures may start to push up NZ domestic lending rates. This is something to watch for over an 18-24 month horizon as the vast majority of fixed mortgages come to an end and homeowners have to refinance. After holding steady in December, sales volumes fell in January and the decline continued into February (albeit at a slower pace than the previous month). Auckland’s downturn in sales

volumes continued last month, with high prices combining to dampen market activity levels. Indeed, properties are sitting on the market for longer now than they have for several years. New listings have gone through their seasonally typical lift over the past few weeks but listings in Auckland have not been as strong as around the rest of the country with year-on-year comparison in Auckland, 11% down. listings are showing signs of increasing both in Auckland and around the rest of the country, which tends to dampen price pressures. First home buyers have slightly reduced their share of the market in the first few months of 2018, but remain more active than they have been at any point in the past four to five years. It’s a Commodore, but not as we know it By motoring correspondent Alistair Davidson Whether on social media or standing around a barbecue with a beer in hand, whenever petrol heads have met together lately, the subject has been Holden’s new Commodore. “It ain’t no Commodore”… “They should have let Commodore die a dignified death”… “A Commodore has to be a V8 and rear-wheel drive”… Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone’s got one. But Marnie Samphier, Holden NZ’s general manager of marketing, made a valid point at a coffee stop during the ZB Commodore media launch in central Otago. “Most enthusiasts making negative comments about new Commodore and the end of V8 and rear-wheel drive won’t ever buy a new Commodore. They buy used, and often modify them. Holden NZ has made it perfectly clear that with new Commodore its basically abandoning buyers of its traditional V8 rear-wheel drive Commodore in favour of a younger, more tech-savvy demographic. Here’s a fact that true-blue Commodore lovers might find disturbing: Holden decided way back in 2011 that ZB Commodore would be the very car you see here, built in Australia on an Opel platform and front-drive, 2.0-litre, and no V8. Holden production ceased so ZB is imported fully built up instead, albeit with input from Holden Australian engineers to refine it for Australasian roads. This car was always the big plan, so whether it should have been

badged a Commodore is a moot point. This writer, who owns a bunch of rear-drive V8s with big noisy exhausts reckons, ‘no’, but hey, it’s just one opinion. The big hurdle facing Holden, regardless of what badge this car wears, is that this is a new entry into a competitive mid-size car market that’s facing some stiff competition from well-established European and Japanese brands. Holden is convinced that the new car is “everything that people know and love about Commodore, but better”, but Samphier added that the big challenge is getting bums on seats, to let people experience it and see for themselves. The range consists of three body styles: Liftback, Sportwagon and Tourer (no sedan); and three engines: a 2.0-litre turbo petrol (191kW and 350Nm), a new 3.6-litre V6 petrol (235kW and 381Nm), and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel that wasn’t available to drive at the launch. All come with a nine-speed automatic transmissions (no manual, even as an option) and all-wheel drive is fitted to the RS-V Liftback and Sportwagon, VXR Liftback, and range-topping Calais-V Tourer. Towing capacity is 750kg unbraked; and 1800 braked for the 2.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel variants, and 2100 for the V6. Obviously front-drive isn’t as well suited to towing a boat up a slippery boat ramp as the old reardrive Commodore, and conversely the new all-wheel drive will offer more grip. Pricing ranges from $45,990 for

the LT 2.0-litre Liftback ($4000 less than the previous entry level Commodore) to $65,990 for the Calais-V Tourer. South got its proverbial bum on the seats of 2.0-litre and V6 models during the back-roads media drive from Dunedin to Queenstown via Middlemarch, Ophir and Clyde. The 2.0-litre turbo was the big surprise. With just 31Nm less torque that than the V6 it gives the big engine a real run for its money and felt more balanced and agile. While neither engine will match the old V8 Commodore in straight line grunt and that great bent-eight thrust, handling and engine makes it equally quick from A to B, and feels much more refined.

While light, the steering has a good level of feel, and road holding is better than expected. As you’d imagine, the all-wheel drive variants were very well composed on tarseal and the drive route’s short gravel sections. Inside, fit and finish are first rate and the styling and execution is high-end European. Standard specification is comprehensive. Although new Commodore is very good, it’s unlikely that purists will ever be convinced. But don’t forget that the first Commodore, the 1978 VB, was also an Opel with updates for the Australasian market. Reality is that times have changed, and Commodore evolution has gone a full circle.

Airbag recall – a long and winding road denied the knowledge required to make an informed choice as to whether my partner (who was pregnant for part of this time) or I should use the vehicle or put it up on blocks.

In wake of a recent recall on (potentially) tens of thousands of cars sporting Takata airbags, JON RAWLINSON shares his experience being driven crazy by a similar recall issued in 2016. ‘They should recall Judith Collins,’ a social media wag by the name of ‘Rod Long’ opines, ‘She’s been an airbag for 15 years!’ I reply with the only fitting expression I can conjure up: ‘LOL!’ Fifteen years might not be a long time in politics but more than two years driving around in a car with a safety feature that could have (ironically) killed us is more than enough, I would venture. In October 2016, TV’s Fair Go raised questions about the length of time it was taking for (then, approximately) 300,000 cars to be recalled due to the possibility of a fault with their airbags. At the time, Mazda confirmed to me we would be advised as soon as possible if we needed to take our car in. During the next nine months, the All Blacks lost, ‘we’ won the America’s Cup, and a Prime Minister resigned. Then, we received our recall letter. I emailed Mazda asking why this

essential work took so long to process. The company’s GM of sales and marketing, Glenn Harris – it’s amazing how quick we journalists are kicked upstairs when asking thorny questions! – responded: “With respect to your case, while we were recalling similar vehicles to your own in late 2016; this was specific to a range within a prescribed VIN range which did not include your vehicle at that time. “We are working to resolve this matter as soon as information is provided to us. However, that doesn’t necessarily come through in a linear manner; such is the nature and scope of this recall and its application,” Mr Harris said.

Takata airbags have been linked to the deaths of just over 20 people worldwide. It is, as many of ‘Rod Long’s’ fellow social media types point out, a remarkably small butcher’s bill considering the sheer number of these parts out there. But that’s cold comfort to the families of those most unlucky motorists.

So, in wake of the recent round of recalls, my advice is that everyone should check rightcar.govt.nz/ takataalpha and keep checking it as the list is subject to change. If your vehicle is included, best assume that it is affected; contact the manufacturer and keep contacting them but be prepared to receive the same ‘creative’ definition of ‘asap’ as I did.
