on the cover IN FASHION: Haute couture Franklin-style was in the spotlight at last month’s Ssangyong Counties Cup Day with Fashions in the Field attracting strong interest. Milliner, Belinda Green of Pokeno was the supreme winner, but the eye-catching style of SOUTH’s ‘cover girl’ Pukekohe resident, Jo White was snapped by photographer WAYNE MARTIN. Jo, who owns FMK Hair Design, is a Fashions in the Field regular and was also looking forward to competing at Te Rapa and Ellerslie races later in the month.

Here’s hoping our first monthly edition will give readers a thirst for more because the SOUTH team is full of enthusiasm for this new, complimentary, monthly magazine which puts lifestyle to the fore. We have tried to cover as many bases as possible offering readers a taste of fashion, travel, health and beauty, books, social events and a little motoring too. Our profile on Mauku water colourist Claudia Slaney is a hint at things to come – a look at the arts, in general, with a focus on people who have made their mark, locally, nationally and internationally but have special links to our wider district – Franklin and beyond. SOUTH is all about the good life which I know local residents can attest to – after all that’s why we chose to make our home in this wonderful locality – gateway to Waikato and southern regions, yet a place where urban style and country attributes are a match.
SOUTH will be delivered to letterboxes in selected areas and will also be available from dropboxes within local townships and businesses. Alternatively visit www.southmagazine.co.nz or request a postal subscription ($45 annually). In the meantime, I hope this very first SOUTH provides ample reading and gives you all a great deal of pleasure. Our team has had loads of fun bringing it together and we’ve met some great people in the process. So, a big thanks to everyone for their support. Now, just enjoy!

Q&A
with former retailer
John & Peggy Lovell
For 25 years former Auckland retailer John Lovell was the face of Silks Jewellers, a store renowned for its diamonds, watches and fine jewellery as well as branded costume jewellery, crystal, gifts and beautiful homewares. When opting for retirement after a full and active business life, John and his wife Peggy, swapped suburban living in east Auckland for the beachside suburb of Orewa so SOUTH asked him about his new life.
ages and the appeal of the lock and up leave idea is not limited to retirees. The coastal location, design and structure of the park has attracted a large cross section of people, some of whom I know as they have come from Howick and other widespread areas.
Since selling your Pakuranga home of 39 years and moving to Kensington Park in Orewa, have you missed your former neighbourhood? We have wonderful memories of that time, but we wanted to downsize within Auckland and as Orewa is only 45 mins away, we can still see our friends regularly. Life is a book with many chapters, and we have started a new chapter a short stroll from the beach.
Have you taken up new interests?
You were a well-known retail identity, do you miss the buzz of business, the regular customers and main street environment? Yes, after so many years in business we do miss the interaction of our regular customers and the stimulation of the trading, but not the long retail hours on our feet, and the never-ending dusting, cleaning and polishing of stock. Howick Village where we had the store, was the Jewel of the East… now, Orewa is our Jewel by the Sea. What type of home have you and Peggy moved into? Is it an apartment or stand-alone villa? Kensington Park has both but we chose a sunny, two-bedroom apartment with generous living. As it was brand new, Peggy was able to decorate it in a fabulous modern, light and airy coastal style which we love. It was easier to downsize than we expected.
r s. us
What is it that you like about life in Kensington Park? How liberal is your lifestyle? Are there any restrictions on what you can do?
ve or
With more than 600 residents already living here there’s a real sense of community. Being freehold there is a good mix of residents from all walks of life and ages who take pride in their
Joan and Peggy Lovell – living the good life. properties and have a vested interest in ensuring the place always looks great. A quarter of the 40 acres has been allocated to beautiful landscaping and recreation areas and a residents’ association is responsible for the upkeep. This is great as it means the stunning gardens are cared for. When it comes to the social side of things, it’s like living in a resort really – no time restrictions – where everyone is having fun. We like Orewa beach, just a six-minute stroll away, and the town centre which is also an easy walk – nice shops, lots of cafes, restaurants, pubs and two supermarkets. Alice Eaves Reserve is on our doorstep with many walking tracks; great for those with dogs.

Do you still do work within your own profession? Of course, having been in jewellery all my life it is part of me and I am always interested in new developments and design. I’m still able to assist family and friends but I find myself fully occupied with other interests now. How active are you in the Kensington Park community? Quite active within my own building as I am on the Body Corp committee and I’m also busy organising social activities within our group. It’s easy to become involved with all sorts of things if you want to and it’s fun!
Is there anything you would like initiated at Kensington Park?
These days people live longer so are retirement resorts/villages attracting younger retirees?
They’ve already have a heated pool, gym and sauna – there are veggie gardens and orchards, too. Perhaps a community hall, which could be used by residents for hobbies, music, pilates and family functions, would be a great asset.
There are no age restrictions at Kensington Park as it’s not a retirement village, but it has all the great lifestyle benefits of being one i.e. it’s safe, secure and well maintained. I’m not sure of the breakdown but there is a mix of
Yes, keeping fit, playing Mah Jong and planning our next trip – we just lock up and go. I have also started helping in the Kensington Park office to promote the park from a resident’s perspective, so most weekends I can be found in the sales suite talking to people about life here…it’s exciting describing all the good things on offer. What about Peggy – has she taken found new interests; do you share the same hobbies? Peg and I worked together for more than 50 years so we are used to doing things together. For Peg it was an easy transition to have me around. We still share a lot of activities, but Peg now has time for singing, cooking, reading, meeting friends, walking on the beach and she’s also making new friends. We both enjoy shows and travel. If you were chairman of Greypower for a day what would you do? I would encourage retirees to keep busy, explore new opportunities, live for the moment, be eccentric now, don’t wait for old age to wear purple – live bold! If you could ask any three people to dinner living or dead who would they be and why? Richard Branson – I like his entrepreneurial success. Ari Seth Cohen – for his outlook on fashion. Tony Bennett – for his art and singing experiences.

Applauding Claudia Franklin region never fails to produce a raft of talented and fascinating people and in an area renowned for its horticulture, it seems appropriate that HELEN PERRY should unearth an artist whose floral compositions must surely rival that in any local garden. I sit down to talk art with Mauku water colourist, Claudia Slaney. Somewhere along the line we are talking food but I guess there’s a goodly element of artistic creativity in food so we agree it’s okay to digress. However, it isn’t long before we are back on track and Claudia’s personal passion for her work, in particular her most recent exploration of floral themes, has me equally enthused. So much so, that then and there, I buy one of her paintings on display at the New Zealand Steel Gallery in Pukekohe. I love Freesias in Spring Rain, it is beautiful and delicate yet incorporates bold, vibrant fuchsia

would I visit and stay with her so we could paint together!
But now I digress. Let’s learn more about Claudia Slaney, an artist whose work has sold to clients as far away as the UK and whose talent for teaching recently saw her whisked off to New Caledonia for six days by an artist keen to learn more about painting with water colours.
“I had six wonderful days with my client who really was very good. We painted at a different location every afternoon – on the beach, high on a hill, in a historic coconut plantation, by the side of a river and more. While I may have been the teacher, I learnt a lot too, especially from the type of flowers and flora we were painting – so different from here.”
“That was amazing. I first met this lady two years ago when she travelled here for a private art session with me. On leaving she said something like, “I’ll see you again”. I thought that unlikely but you could have knocked me over when this year she emailed and asked if she arranged plane tickets
Although Claudia has always favoured water colours, when she travelled to the UK 11 years ago and spent six years in London, she explored various media. “There were so many first rate
workshops, courses and life drawing classes available. I attended as many as I could but eventually it came down to me loving water colours and not wanting to depart from this medium – the colours are so alive and the stunning effects produced by the interactions of the different pigments with water, paper and each other are impossible to resist. “Ideally, I want to produce expressive paintings, something evocative; even a bit mysterious. I want it to enhance the owners’ surroundings and draw them in.” As a novice artist, Claudia started out on landscapes but her interest shifted especially when she

returned to New Zealand from the UK and settled in Mauku with her partner and son. I moved on to urban and village scenes with small buildings and people – Mt Eden, K Rd, inner Auckland – the kind of places which are meaningful. People are much more likely to connect with a painting if the location is meaningful or familiar to them.” More recently she has been exploring floral themes and loving the direction her work has taken. “Painting flowers in the way I do is very expressive and I’m now consumed by them. Two years ago I had no interest in flowers as a subject; now I’m obsessed.” Despite this relatively new fixation, Claudia acknowledges she may move on to a new series as she continues to develop – ‘as an artist you’re always developing; you can’t possibly learn everything at once, there’s always more!” Although her work, at between $500 and $1200, sometimes less, is generally deemed ‘affordable’ by art lovers, Claudia says it’s not easy to make a living as an artist. Therefore, she also teaches and runs workshops across Auckland, including at the Franklin Arts Centre (at the NZ Steel Gallery) in Pukekohe every Tuesday. Four of her own works also featured in the recent Flora exhibition in Pukekohe during which she conducted a free session in still life drawing. “While you can never predict how sales will go I’ve been lucky. I do receive orders from overseas and I sell a lot through my website and Facebook page as well as at exhibitions. Really, it’s amazing how many people come out of the woodwork to support you and purchase works. “However, the one thing I would say to emerging artists is to realise there is more to being an artist than producing, exhibiting and selling one’s work. At art school they don’t teach you about marketing, spread sheets, stock inventories, paperwork, packaging, hanging, storage and so on.” “Life as an artist can be a very physical thing, too. I spend a lot of time sourcing paints and packaging, wrapping and unwrapping, hanging my paintings in galleries, carrying them from site to site. On top of all the administration, you have to be prepared for some time-consuming jobs.” Despite Claudia providing this reality check on being a working artist, I can’t help but think how lucky this lovely lady is – she has talent, yet remains humble about her work and so willing to share her knowledge...including about restaurants! I sense a common bond perhaps there’ll be a chance to explore the art of dining together. Who knows what inspiration will be found. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Tricky Rotorua gallery
in the frame The long summer school holidays are sometimes a challenge for parents who can’t take a long break but would still like a getaway with the children. SARAH ELLIS recommends Rotorua as a handy destination offering many options. Here she focuses on one attraction she thinks young and old would enjoy.
Caught on camera took on a whole new meaning when we discovered the not long opened 3D Trick Art Gallery in Rotorua. Having seen some great photos from a similar gallery in Melbourne, we made a beeline for this attraction – camera phones charged. The gallery was on Fairy Springs Road just as we drove into the outskirts of Rotorua from Auckland. On arrival, staff members were very friendly and carefully explained the concept and the tricks behind capturing the best photos. So, with the affordable entry fee paid (a family pass can range from $60$85 depending on specials available) we headed on in to have some fun and see how we were transposed into some amazing places. We all had our favourite scenes and
even retraced our steps to take more photographs of those we liked best. However, we agreed the final epic scene resulted in the best picture and it also had a great response on Facebook and Instagram. Most of us know Rotorua has some amazing places to visit. While there we took in the gondola and luge and also headed to the Polynesian thermal pools for a therapeutic soak – just divine! But, because our trip was relatively short, we weren’t there to try everything on offer; some we’ve saved for next time. However, whether visitors want thrills and spills or a more sedate wander around the thermal attractions, parks and the lake, Rotorua seems to have that ability to surprise. The 3D Trick Art Gallery certainly surprised up – it’s definitely one for holiday viewing.

e s i d a r a In the mood for p Most of us have heard of ‘island time’ and take it to mean ‘taking life slowly’ but for KATE OCKELFORD-GREEN island time is synonymous with sun, sea and sand, warm welcoming smiles, tropical cocktails and an escape from her busy work day. Given the chance of a five day break in Rarotonga I was never going to say, ‘No!” And it couldn’t have come at a better time especially as husband and I needed some real R&R away from the pressures of our small Franklin farm. We arrived to beautiful weather – 28 degrees celsius with the warm, salt-laden air tinged with the smell of frangipani from our welcome leis. For Kiwis, Rarotonga is such an easy place to holiday – just a three to four hour flight from Auckland and no need to pack anything more than swimwear, sarongs, and sunglasses. Okay, maybe a couple of pairs of shorts, with Ts and something a little more dressy for dining out. But, really, you don’t need a lot, especially if you spend most of the day under the sun umbrella, next to the pool with a book in hand. Of course, we did get out. Everyone should do the short 32km drive around the island – whether you opt to sit for your scooter licence, take the island bus or just hire a car for a day or two is up to you... and your age! If you’re there on a Saturday, the morning market at Avarua is a convivial mix of friendly locals and

tourists wandering the open-air stands and small huts selling handicrafts, bright pareu (sarongs), tropical fruits, veges, seafood and great coffee! Visitors also flock to Muri Beach for a chance to enjoy a whirl in glass bottomed boats or try their hand at snorkelling in the Tikioki Lagoon Marine Reserve. But if you’re after somewhere away from the madding crowd and a busy public beach, then opt for the privacy and seclusion of The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa

(where we stayed) and sister resort next door, Sanctuary Rarotonga – On the Beach, for adults-only aged 16 and over. These resorts sit on a truly white, sandy beach (some places are on rocky coral shorelines) and the lagoon out front offers arguably the island’s best snorkelling in the sheltered Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve. The resort offers guests guided snorkelling tours, and even night snorkelling, a unique experience – imagine seeing a parrot fish tucked up in its jelly-like sleeping bag for the night! This is a lovely place to holiday or celebrate something special, such as saying ‘I do’! At such resorts you can expect air conditioning, flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, insect screens and other amenities
such as hair dryer, mini-fridge, tea and coffee making, plus on-site restaurants, bars, swimming pools, gym, spa and possibly a kids’ club – creature comforts to make a short getaway truly relaxing. Off-site there’s a huge variety of tours, dining and entertainment options – possibly the widest range in the South Pacific. But, perhaps, Rarotonga’s greatest asset is its friendly, warm-hearted people, who happily share their paradise. The sun may have set on my recent Rarotongan holiday but there are still stars in my eyes after vacationing in what so many folk call paradise. I racked my brains for a way to stay longer. Now I’ll settle for a visit next year. It is the place to escape winter. www.southmagazine.co.nz

CHRISTMAS HITS FATHER CHRISTMAS’S FAKE BEARD
THE CHRISTMAS TREE TANGLE
Featuring ten fantastical tales from the furiously funny mind of Terry Pratchett, this book flips the Christmas script. From a huge exploding mince pie and a pet abominable snowman, to jolly old Saint Nick being arrested for burglary, the subject matter in this book is bound to have little ones (and parents too) laughing right through the holidays.
Margaret Mahy is simply one of the best children’s authors New Zealand has ever produced... no maybe about it! And it’s great to see her stories still live on. When an adventurous kitten becomes stuck high up on a town’s Christmas tree, who will save this feline’s bacon? From a cat and a dog to a goat and pigs, many a helpful animal also becomes stuck during their rescue attempts. Will they all manage to escape in time for Christmas? There’s only one way to know for sure!

BEST HAIRCUTS WITH VIVO
A year in hair It has been a remarkable year for Vivo Hair and Beauty from winning Best Hair Salon at the Best in Beauty Bauer Awards to sending two Vivo stylists to Barcelona, Spain to compete at a global, live, hands-on hair competition. Here we reflect on what’s been hot and what’s to come.
With all that Vivo has accomplished this year, and more in the pipeline for 2018, it really was the stunning hair styles which came out of our salons – created by professional Vivo stylists with magic flair – which made 2017 so memorable.
one tone colour and uniformity in style. “All-over colour is making a definite come back with popular shades being reds and browns!” says senior stylist Veronique from Vivo Pukekohe.
Here are some of our top trends from the year that’s been.
Both colours were fashionable throughout the year and with the right stylist, colour and look can easily be maintained.
THE LOB
PASTELS HOT FOR 2018
Known for its versatility, the lob looks lovely on any face shape. Marrying a ‘short bob’ with long to medium length hair, this hair cut strikes the perfect balance between short and long – it wears as an ideal accessory for any occasion.
Vivo carries one of the world’s leading colour brands; Goldwell which has just released a gorgeous line of pastel hair colours. These are poised to be a big hit in 2018 and are already in high demand for the 2017 holiday season.
“The Lob was also one of our most asked for salon looks in 2017 and is a style that just keeps on giving,” says senior stylist Jeffrey from Vivo Hair & Beauty, Takanini.
“Extremely chic, this stunning wave effect can take you from day to night without much fuss especially when set in place with KMS Sea Salt Spray – you’ll be amazed at the staying power!” says senior stylist Dove from Vivo Manukau.
HAIR WAVES
ALL OVER COLOUR
Not so much a cut but more of a style, hair waves are easily achieved with a hot styler. They were one of the most sought after looks this year and popular throughout all the seasons.
While the effectiveness of highlights may have an everlasting place in our 2017 book of style, this year also saw all-over hair colour take a prominent front seat. It was, and still is, all about shine,

Inspired by the 80’s trend which has been ruling the runways, the pastel range comes in Mint, Indigo, Peach, Rose and Lavender. Rose is a subtle, head-turning shade that is perfect for a fresh hit of colour to your locks. Be sure to try it! That marks another fantastic year in the hair industry for Vivo which now has three salons in South Auckland. The team can’t wait to meet you so be sure to check out the Vivo website for great new client offers and packages.

Sweet enough
to make a man-go crazy! In the summertime when the weather is fine it’s time to enjoy the sweet taste of mangoes and right now our supermarkets are full of succulent, delicious, mangoes from Australia, bringing an aromatic magic to the season. The national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines and also the national tree of Bangladesh, these luscious fruit originated in south Asia where they were grown for thousands of years before making their way around the world. Today mangoes are commonly grown in most tropical countries.
So, while it has multiple cooking uses, mangoes also feature in various beauty treatments for the skin (masks, scrubs, blackhead removal and cleansing being just a few) and the hair (promoting hair growth and treating dry hair). In the kitchen mangoes are popular in smoothies, icecream, pies
The mango tree produces fragrant flowers bringing a light, sweet aroma which contributes wonderfully to the atmosphere of summer evenings in the garden. Plant in late spring to early summer but should it be chilly, mango trees will always develop cold feet! They like areas where evening
temperatures will not drop below 10°C and only after frosts and spring rains have past. While in New Zealand the sun is only now making itself felt, sinking your teeth into a mango is a sure way to bring summer flooding in – add to summer salads, dessert and breakfast cereals – it’s a winner. On the other hand, if your skin needs a boost you could try this exfoliating mask using one tablespoon of natural yoghurt, two tablespoons of honey and one tablespoon of mango pulp. Rub onto the face, leave for half an hour then wash clean.
SC3786
However, ideally they like it hot! That said, in India the juicy, juicy mango is representative of fertility, love, abundance and good fortune and, along with the leaves and flowers of the mango tree, plays an important part in many religious ceremonies and celebrations.
The fruit of the mango tree is also classed as a superfruit as it is loaded with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidants.
and as fruit juice but are equally at home in a curry, preserves, pickles, chutney and in sauces. Interestingly, they belong to the same family as cashew nuts but with their soft flesh and skin, they should be handled with care – store at room temperature.

Entertaining
has never been so easy Hooray – it’s that time of the year when Kiwis can relax, entertain and indulge themselves. Of course, Christmas and holidays are when you need something in the freezer to make celebrating with others that little bit easier and you could say when it comes to sweet treats the proof is in the pudding. Yes, just by storing a few packs of Marcel’s crêpes and blinis to pull out when needs must, makes it easy to whip up nibbles or desserts fit for the best of Kiwi tables. Marcel’s freezer range includes Fancy Blinis (RRP $4.99) and Ooh La La Crêpes Gluten Free (RRP $5.99) – both easily defrosted and ideal for home or at the bach. So, to take the hassle out of planning here’s a great recipe from Marcel to share.
Ingredients • 3 x Marcel’s Ooh La La GlutenFree Crepes Filling: • 1 cup lemon curd (store bought or home-made) • 200g mascarpone • ¾ cup cream • 2 Tbs icing sugar • 2 Tbs sugar Toppings: • Extra whipped cream • Fresh strawberries • 50g grated chocolate/crumbled Flake bar • Handful freeze dried strawberries • 1 small meringue, crushed
• 100g dark chocolate, melted with a teaspoon of coconut oil
method: In a large bowl, beat all the ingredients for the filling until it’s light and fluffy. Heat crepes stacked on a plate (in three lots) for one minute in the microwave and then allow to cool until they’re only just warm. Leave in fridge until ready for use. You won’t be able to move the crepe cake once it’s completed, so assemble it on the plate you wish to serve it on! It can help to place pieces of baking paper just under the edge of the first crepe, to catch any drips as you’re layering it up with fillings. You can then easily pull the baking paper out when you’re finished, leaving a clean plate, ready to serve!
Sugar typically found in fruit is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. It is easily broken down in the body which can lead to a surge of blood glucose. Unfortunately, what your body doesn’t immediately use right then is stored as fat. While honey consists mostly of sugar, the glucose amount is only about 30% and the fructose less than 40%. What’s more, there are some 20 different sugars in the mix, many of which are somewhat complex. This means the body expends more energy breaking them down into glucose and fewer calories are therefore accumulated. Remember too, honey contains various trace elements picked up by bees travelling from plant to plant. These will probably depend on the honey’s source region. For example, your honey may contain small amounts of minerals such as zinc and selenium, as well as some vitamins. The good news is because honey doesn’t break down in nature, it doesn’t contain preservatives or other additives. But, as with anything sweet, you can overdo it when adding to a drink or dish so
be circumspect in the amount you use. Useful tips for using honey instead of sugar in cooking: 1. Use equal amounts of honey for sugar up to one cup. More than one cup, replace each cup of sugar with 2/3 to 3/4 cup of honey according to desired sweetness. 2. L ower the baking temperature 25 degrees and watch the time carefully; products with honey brown faster. 3. I n recipes using more than one cup honey for sugar, it may be necessary to reduce liquids by 1/4 cup per cup of honey. Honey has a multitude of uses and is a common ingredient in treatments to ease cold symptoms and sore throats. It is an ideal sugar substitute. So, stop in at Happy Valley with your own jar and fill it with liquid honey – perfect for use in recipes and for your Christmas ham glaze. See www.happyvalley.co.nz or visit us at 520 Great South Road, Rosehill, Papakura.
To assemble, start with a crepe laid flat on your cake serving plate. Top crepe with a heaped dessert spoon of the mascarpone mixture; spread it right out to the edges. Top with another crepe then repeat until you’ve used all of the mixture. Cover with cling film and chill in the fridge for 3–4 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, top your cake with whipped cream, sliced fresh strawberries, freeze dried strawberry slices, crushed meringue and grated chocolate or crumbled flake bar. Drizzle it with the melted dark chocolate just before serving. Slice with a large sharp knife.

All’s Fare...
Try our latest flavours of the month and experience a range of new products with a real taste difference.
A LITTLE DASH ‘LL DO YA Fancy an organic blonde? Soda Press has the answer. Certified organic and low in sugar – compared to some colas – Soda Press Co’s Blonde Cola syrup – an exotic blend of cola nuts, ginger, lemon, cinnamon, rosemary and lavender – allows us to mix and match its flavour with any number of beverages, from soda water to something a little stronger. As with other varieties in this range, Blonde Cola comes in 500ml recyclable glass bottles (RRP $14.95 from selected retailers, cafes, and bars) so no bottles should end up in landfills.
CHIA SEEDS – UN-FOR-PETABLE Once a favourite of people who loved animals but not so much that they’d get a real, living pet, chia seeds have come a long way. Now, often enjoyed in salads, smoothies and cereals (rather than to sprout ‘hair’ or ‘fur’ from terracotta figures) these seeds provide a natural, nutritional kick. After being soaked in liquid they can even act as an egg substitute in vegan baking. The Chia Co’s range (which includes black or white seeds as well as other tasty products) is now available via naturalthings.co.nz or from selected health stores nationwide.
LABNEH – DIPPING GOOD DUNK!
DRINK ON THE BAT... We might require a Red Bull to give us wings but to truly take off we could consider a Fruit Bat Passionfruit instead. The latest in Mac’s range of craft beers, this fruity little brew boasts a robust 7% ABV – it may send you flying, but set it aside if driving! – with the tart taste of passionfruit. Available in four-packs of 330ml bottles (RRP $14.99), Mac’s Fruit Bat Passionfruit IPA is available only until March 1, so we’d best drink up before the summer sets!
Now’s the time to go dippy over a new range Labneh ‘dunkers’ from The Collective which offer some seriously great flavours. Labneh (pronounced lab-neigh), originates from The Mediterranean and is a natural, strained yoghurt – silky ‘n’ spreadable thick. Now, chefs from the Collective have created a delicious texture that’s similar to that of soft cheese and paired it with delicious flavours, perfect for dipping. Theses labneh dips come in 150g tubs (RRP $3.99) with five Middle Eastern inspired flavours – capsicum pesto; harissa; sweet chilli; smoked tomato; and Moroccan relish. Gluten free, they are suitable for vegetarians and are free of artificial colours, flavours and preservatives – just right for summer entertaining.
WISE UP, SUCKERS! Careening around the supermarket with little ones hanging off the trolley is enough for many parents to think ‘it sucks to be me!’ And, trying to translate ad’ jargon on product labels in efforts to keep said offspring suitably well fuelled, doesn’t make life any easier. Fortunately, The Collective has at least one simple solution, Organic Li’l Suckies, fresh yoghurt pouches with all natural ingredients. Available in a range of flavours (RRP $1.89 from supermarkets nationwide) these 70g pouches are great lunchbox snacks and can even be frozen.

Colour schemes
set the mood Moody blues or sunny disposition may well be recognised personality traits but the way we use colour in the home can create similar feelings when it comes to interior ambience.
s
In fact, understanding colour psychology may help homeowners choose paint colours that set the right tones throughout. It has been said that colours can influence our feelings. For example, blue has been shown to slow the pulse rate and lower body temperature. It might be the perfect colour choice for a bedroom but less so for dining rooms. Green is seen as a little more versatile. While it, too, has a soothing effect, it also represents renewal, youth and vigour. Said to be calming, green paint is a good choice for bedrooms and can work in dining rooms, too.
Muddy shades are useful in many areas but vivid tones may appear raw and flamboyant. Orange is clearly not a calming colour so bypass it when painting a bedroom or relaxation area. Purple is a tricky paint colour but is an overwhelming favourite of young girls. Reserve it for a daughter’s room to create a win-win situation. Odds are, she’ll love it and you can take comfort in purple’s ability to stimulate brain activity! Then there are the ‘non-colours’, black (the absence of light and colour) and white (the confluence of all the colours in the spectrum). Black is a great accent colour indoors or out. It imparts elegance, formality, and sophistication to a colour scheme. But don’t get carried away; too much can be depressing.
Red creates energy and excitement, actually raising the blood pressure and making the heart beat faster. Associated with desire and passion, it will work in bedrooms for some and dining rooms too. Ironically, pink – a very light tint of red – is one of the most calming colours and a fine nursery choice. Yellow is recognised as generating happiness, hope and optimism. It may even stir the creative juices so what better colour to use in a master bathroom or kitchen to start the day on the right foot? Orange is a radiant colour, too. More attention-getting than yellow, it exudes energy.
d
White conveys peace, simplicity, and spaciousness. It can provide a crisp finish to almost any paint job by adding sharp contrast. It is often used to give an illusion of added space.
Creating an impression Set within the historic Karaka Church at 458 Karaka Road, is Rachael Buxton’s bustling boutique fashion, homeware and gift store, ‘interiors.etc’. Rachael’s store offers an extensive collection of exotic treats including NZ and overseas manufactured soy candles, casual and after five fashions (one of which Rachael is modelling), jewellery, handbags, scarves, lamps, laptop bags, vases, cushions, mirrors, clocks, throws and cards. ‘My store is bursting with goodies for Christmas, so do pop in and say, ‘hi’,” she says. A recognised, experienced and qualified interior designer who trained in London achieving a distinction in the London City and Guilds Certificate of Interior Design, Rachael has 20 years experience as a professional interior designer. Her specialty areas are soft furnishings, window treatments, furniture and colour specification. “Fashions and furnishing trends are forever changing and new
products and materials flow into the market. I thrive on the challenge of keeping up with the continual changes but I must always consider the direction of the market too, particularly when specifying furnishings my clients will live with for years to come.” “I am a Cantabrian by birth and was raised on a farm. I love living in Franklin with the juxtaposition of town and country. The Franklin community has been very supportive of me and I am very grateful for that. “Work aside, my daughter Olivia and I play hockey for the Waiau Pa Club and I am a supporter of Counties Fitness. I also like to paint when I find the time.” The interiors.etc retail store in the Karaka Church is open from 10am to 4pm, seven days a week. The church is located along State Highway 22, which runs between Drury and Pukekohe, and is 50 metres from the Blackbridge and Karaka Roads intersection.
So, when you’re in the mood to redecorate, take careful stock of your colour scheme – choose colours that are in sync with your character.

Weihnacht, holy night... PYRAMID DESIGN SCHEMES: Some sceptics may still question who built the pyramids but, at SOUTH we would never question this; it was the Germans, of course! Weihnachtspyramide (or Christmas pyramids) have been erected in homes throughout Germany – often hung from ceilings – since the Middle Ages. Thought to have originated from the Ore Mountain region, these ingenious decorations (also known as carousels) feature decorated frames and candle
holders. Warm air from the candles turns a rotor at the top. While these decorations may still be quite common in Germany, they are harder to come by here in New Zealand. Fortunately, Erzgebirge-Palace has Christmas pyramids from its Ore Mountain range (and other festive decorations) which can be purchased online and delivered here. See erzgebirgepalace.com for details.
Edge RE/MAX EDGE TEAM EXPANDS WITH PAPAKURA OFFICE The expansion of the successful Clevedon based RE/MAX Edge business means home owners and property investors in Papakura have a re-energized service with the global real estate brand RE/MAX. Michelle Goodman and Richard Sumner opened RE/MAX Edge in March this year with every intention to grow their business. Now, in a strategic expansion move, they have taken the opportunity to fill the RE/MAX niche being left. “Our plan was to grow through expanding our territory and Papakura was a jewel in our sights, but RE/MAX already had a presence. When this wonderful opportunity presented itself we didn’t hesitate. Papakura is a huge base for expansion in both in residential and lifestyle sectors; and through towns such as Takanini, Drury and Karaka, the market is already there and deserves the exceptional real estate services we intend to provide”. With the addition of the Papakura office, RE/MAX Edge will also focus on property management in order to provide a full suite of options for their clients. Two sales associates from RE/MAX Countryside Citywide will join the RE/MAX Edge team, Roger Matheson and Viren Jhagroo. Both Roger and Viren are successful real estate salespeople who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the RE/MAX Edge team.

It seems 2018 homes will be in the pink – and the yellow, berry colours too plus a dash of turquoise. These are the hues you can expect to see in next year’s Pantone range. In fact, Pantone has revealed eight palettes with a mix of cool and warm tones.
Discretion offers subtle hues such as Elderberry and Hawthorne Rose but for warm, earthy hues such as Cornsilk Yellow blending with rosy tones, then look to the Far-fetched palette which embraces many different cultures.
First up is Resourceful, made up of complementary shades of blue and orange. Then there’s Verdure featuring vegetal colours such as celery combined with berry-infused purples and eggshell blue all symbolic of health.
Intricacy focuses on neutral metallics with accents of Holly Berry Red and Yellow Sulfur while Intensity’s eclectic mix of colours evokes a sense of strength, power and sophistication balanced with black and gold.
For a sunny effect check out Playful. Think ‘Minions’ – bright yellow, lime popsicle, and all things that will make you smile. Playful’s alter ego
Finally, in contrast, TECH-nique with its bright turquoise, pink and purple colours is anchored by its nod to Brilliant White and Frosted Almond.

Teacher, Tanya Davis – who runs the school’s Enviro Group – says the design was based on an outdoor learning space and it includes edible and sensory gardens. “We are delighted with the gold award, it recognises huge efforts by all the students and parents involved,” she says. “They’re keen to replicate the garden back at school so that all our students can enjoy it.” New Zealand has been without a major annual garden show since the Ellerslie Flower Show (then based in Christchurch) wowed crowds for the final time in 2014. Although this new incarnation began with a somewhat rocky start – its first show, scheduled to run last year at Bastion Point was
cancelled – the NZ Flower & Garden Show now appears to have found fertile ground in Henderson. Overall, Convenor of Judges and award-winning designer, Pascal Garbe, says entries were of a high standard. “The range of award-winners is a testament to the strength of the New Zealand horticultural community,” he adds. “With this show, I am convinced that New Zealand will attract the attention of all garden experts around the world.” For more details regarding this year’s winning garden designs, visit nzflowergardenshow.co.nz. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Government SIGNALS CHANGE
Harcourts Pukekohe real estate agent, JO-ANN DAY-TOWNSEND, gives an update on the real estate and market happenings.
It seems there is an interesting time ahead for the New Zealand property market with strong signals for change. Firstly, the Labour-led Government has modified the Overseas Investment Act to classify residential property as “sensitive”.
ol grows gold
In addition, the Healthy Homes Act, which recently passed its final reading, will impact on rental property standards. The Bill aims to ensure that rental properties meet minimum healthy home criteria including heating, insulation, moisture, ventilation and drainage. The law requires landlords to guarantee any new tenancies from July 1, 2019 are either properly insulated or contain a heating source capable of making the home warm and dry.
A new announcement on changes by the Reserve Bank to LVR means that from January 1, banks will be able to offer 15% percent of mortgages (currently 10%) to owner/occupier purchasers with less than 20% deposit. For investors the minimum deposit [with 5% of loans exempted] falls from 40% to 35%. New listings are back to where they should be for November – up 2.3% (13,447) nationally, compared to November 2016. Sale volumes are down but, at this stage, prices in the region remain relatively stable although the days to sell have increased for most areas. Despite all the changes coming, people are still in the market to buy and sell their properties and I’m the one to call if that’s the case!

Rocking good landscapes Homeowners keen to stay in touch with Mother Nature should look to natural stone as a beautiful and timeless addition to both the indoors and out. A versatile aspect of architecture since building began, natural stone is more sought after than ever being incorporated into such rooms as kitchens, bathrooms and living while remaining one of the most popular landscaping materials for walls and garden features. And, no one knows better how to use the distinctive qualities of natural stone to accentuate prestigious residential or commercial projects than Joshua O’Connor from Stone Creations. A talented stonemason who has operated Stone Creations for 20 years, Joshua says stone is especially suitable for interior walls and floors, exterior cladding, steps, columns, pilasters, roundels, paving, hearths and more. “The look of stone expresses solidity with a sense of permanence and exudes a sense of nobility – there’s nothing like it to give a property timeless appeal,” he says. “Of course, today, modern refinement and design vision
has made stone suitable not just for traditional homes but all contemporary styling. The beauty of stone is that there are so many choices offering diversity of colour and texture.” Heading an experienced, skilled and creative team, Joshua has gathered knowledge from around the world including Italy – the heart of beautiful sculpture and stonework. Working from a five-acre Ramarama property – big enough for a business that needs space for the large range of boulders, rocks and stones – Joshua has formed strong ties with builders, developers, architects and landscapers. “I love the permanence of stone and the character it adds to almost any project,’ he says. “What’s more it’s great for new builds, existing houses and upgrading properties of all types. “Stone can be used to create an

sport
Ace of Hearts To reach the pinnacle in any sport, one needs drive and devotion. These qualities have been exemplified by one Auckland Hearts’ and White Ferns’ cricketer, in particular, over and over again. But, just as money makes the world go ‘round, it also keeps international sport in spin. JON RAWLINSON explains. Good sports don’t necessarily make great money. While Rugby’s Black Ferns – who claimed their fifth Women’s World Cup earlier this year – may still be battling for professional contracts, their cricket counterparts are somewhat better off. White Fern, and Auckland Hearts’ all-rounder, Holly Huddleston, says a deal secured last year has made her (for one) better prepared to compete on the international stage. “It’s a weight off my shoulders. I don’t need to worry about having only a few hours [to train] after or before work; I can just get on with it,” the former Papakura local explains. “It’s important we get enough so we can really put good performances on the park and help grow the game.” Following last year’s increase for contracted players, White Ferns receive somewhere in the 20-40k per annum ball park. I don’t ask Holly exactly how much she receives – my mum always said that was vulgar – but at least she can keep her bank balance in the black while pursuing her passion fulltime. To put this into some perspective, a former Rosehill College schoolmate of Holly’s who’s reached an equivalent level in his sport benefited from a pay rise last year. However, as All Black captain, Kieran Read is thought to earn more than Holly per annum; about a million dollars more. “To be honest, I don’t think I ever said more than one or two words to him back then; he was head boy and I was just a little fifth former,” she laughs. “Kieran was always good at cricket too so I actually thought he could’ve gone on to be a Black Cap.” Okay, so achieving pay parity may still be some way off, but Holly remains philosophical; ultimately it’s the number of fans in the stands which determines whether cricket’s women receive a fair amount of money for their runs. “Women’s sport (in general) is more in the spotlight these days, which is awesome, and with the contracts we have now, it’s looking up,” she adds. “More people are taking notice, which means more games, more sponsors and that’s where the money comes in.” Having grown up in Papakura watching cricket with her mum, Holly was always keen on the www.southmagazine.co.nz

sport, but the decision to leave a solid day job behind her in 2015 wasn’t taken lightly. “After my first year [playing for the White Ferns], my fitness let me down. I felt I couldn’t really progress in cricket because I couldn’t give as much time to it as it needed,” she says. “I wanted to play in England [Middlesex] which meant I’d need to stop working. It was very scary. My parents were awesome, really supportive. They said, as it was my dream and I only had a short time when I’d be able to do it, they would help me out.” While playing English County Cricket can result in quite the windfall for batsmen, its batswomen are not paid to play, although Holly confirms her accommodation was provided and she secured some paid coaching gigs. Originally a keeper, Holly set aside the gloves to focus on bowling when playing with the Northern Districts Spirit. It would prove an important step in her career. Since her debut for New Zealand in early 2014, the fast-medium has become a spearhead of the Ferns’ bowling attack in T20 and One Day formats. Although she considers test cricket to be the pinnacle of the old leather on willow code, this wily wicket-taker is unlikely to doff a test cap. “Unfortunately, we don’t [play tests] anymore,” she explains. “I think it just comes down to time and scheduling. I would love to play one; as a bowler there’s more strategy, more overs and plenty more opportunities to give it your best. “I feel the women’s game needs a return to test cricket. To be fair, though, I really think T20 is the way to go when it comes to promoting women’s cricket. Hopefully, the fan base that could build up as a result may allow the funding for tests to return.” Maintaining match fitness can also prove problematic for New Zealand’s finest female cricketers who play far fewer fixtures at the top level than the Black Caps. “We don’t play as often as the men but the amount [of international cricket] we’re playing is on the increase,” she confirms. “We’re also getting to play overseas against different opposition more often too, which is important.”
SETTLING SCORES... During this summer’s women’s One Day and T20 competitions, the Auckland Hearts will be hoping a return to title fame is on the cards. Papakura-raised all-rounder, Holly Huddleston, will likely prove a particularly thorny customer for batters to manage. “Batting is still a massive ‘work on’ for me; bowling is my biggest strength. I’ve been working on changing up the ball at the death in T20s and that’s when my ability to swing the ball really comes into its own,” she reveals. “I’ve probably taken a few more wickets than I’ve hit sixes. Hitting a six is just unbelievable but you can’t beat the feeling from taking a wicket; it’s such a rush, especially when you bowl an absolute jaffa and the batter has no hope of even getting close to it, that feels fantastic!” Fresh laurels during the domestic season could go some way to soothing the agony which resulted in more than just one ‘broken Heart’ during the Women’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year. “We were all very disappointed. [White Ferns’ captain] Suzie Bates hit the nail by saying we just didn’t perform as we should have against the best teams; it just didn’t happen,” the fast-medium says. The team’s bid for a second World Cup ran as short as their run chase, managing a mere 79 in response to India’s 265. “India turned up to the park and we didn’t. We bowled really well to keep them to an average score but we just didn’t back it up with the bat. I didn’t play that game. It’s not the best to be dropped, first and foremost, but then for the game to go the way it did was just awful! I felt helpless because with no control over the situation; the best I could do was run on drinks.” I suggest a few drinks afterward may have helped too; she laughs. She’s right to remain positive because, in sport, there’s always another cup around the corner. Come next November, Holly hopes she and her team can deliver some sweet revenge during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. Recently, the Ferns made some impressive progress on the road to retribution, picking up two wins from three ODIs followed by a clean sweep of the four-match T20 series against Pakistan during a short tour of the UAE. Their next campaign will be a home series against the ‘Windies’ early next year. “Playing at home is massive for us. It’s a little bit chillier here than in the West Indies, so they might not like it too much,” Holly laughs. “But they are a force to be reckoned with. We’d be confident, but it all comes down to what happens on the day.” south | december 2017 / january 2018 |

Dawn of a new era The last Holden manufactured in Australia rolled of the production line in Melbourne in October but the Holden name is set to remain very much in motoring focus as a new era of models drives forward. Today ALISTAIR DAVIDSON looks over Holden’s new mid-size SUV, the Equinox. Holden NZ first revealed its new Equinox mid-size SUV at a druidthemed event last September, which kinda made sense. Druids and other pagans gather at Stonehenge to celebrate the spring equinox, when day and night are equal length and life begins anew. “Holden as a brand has moved from the Stone Age,” explained Kristian Aquilina, managing director Holden New Zealand. “Holden became Commodore, Commodore became Holden, and Commodore overshadowed all other products.” Belittling almost four decades of Commodore as ‘the Stone Age’ probably offended a chunk of Holden’s customer base, but the company isn’t fazed. Equinox is part of a 24-vehicle launch programme that started in 2016, runs through until 2020, and is planned to attract a far wider demographic than your typical large-car buyer.
Kiwi-spec Equinox has a different damper tune as well as EPS steering calibration compared to the North American version, which helps deliver a more connected and engaging drive.

South December 2017.indd 40
Equinox is set not to just plug that gap; Holden reckons it has the specification, price and performance to really take it to its competition. Chevrolet Equinox is General Motors’ best-selling SUV in the US and second overall behind Silverado pick-up, and is sold in 116 markets around the world. The Mexico-built Equinox we see here isn’t simply a rebadged Chevrolet. Suspension hardware and tune has been specifically developed for Australasian conditions. But has this Holden version got what it takes to earn a slice of the SUV-flavoured pie? Based on a 300km drive route that started in New Plymouth’s city centre, went through some remote King Country back roads, and included a stop for lunch in the republic of Whangamomona, you’d have to say, yes.
Aquilina describes the programme as ‘Holden’s rejuvenation’, and like the spring equinox, life has indeed begun anew for the lion-badged brand.
Holden might be busy dragging itself out of the dark ages, but it felt like we’d stepped right back in time as we drove through Ohura which is all but a ghost town and along the Forgotten World Highway to Whangamomona.
Equinox plays a critical role in Holden’s future. Mid-size SUVs are the biggest selling vehicles in New Zealand, and Holden’s been out of the segment since Captiva kicked the bucket two years ago.
With its narrow rough gravel roads, dense bush and lack of civilisation, the route felt like a scene from Jurassic Park. The mixed weather and variety of road surfaces didn’t challenge Equinox. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Spot LTZ by its 19” alloys, and LED headlights and taillights, plus it boasts hands-free power tailgate.
The three base models are all frontwheel drive, while all-wheel drive is standard on the two LTZ and the two higher specification LTZ-V models.
As you’d expect, the two-wheel drive version was a little jittery in loose gravel, whereas the all-wheel drive LTZ-V was surefooted and predictable.
A lengthy section of rough gravel provided an opportunity to evaluate both the entry level twowheel drive 1.5-litre LS ($35,990) and range-topping all-wheel drive LTZ-V ($56,990 2.0-litre).
On better roads both vehicles acquitted themselves well. Although the turbocharged 127kW, 275Nm 1.5-litre was a willing performer, the 2.0-litre turbo with a class-leading 186kW of power and 350Nm of torque is impressively

smooth and responsive. The 1.6-litre diesel and 1.5-litre petrol have a six-speed auto, whereas the 2.0 has a slick ninespeed auto, a first for Holden. All Equinox variants come highly specified; the entry level LS has six airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Passive Entry Push Button Start, Rear Park
Equinox has the potential to breathe new life into the crowded mid-size SUV market with its keen pricing, high spec and excellent performance, ride and handling. But it’s a new badge that’s going up against well-established competition, so only time will tell.

parting shot
Paper or plastic? Earlier this year, there was plenty of talk about how we were all going to vote. And, after a hard fought campaign, there was a clear winner... our planet, apparently, as JON RAWLINSON explains. Unlike the general election, the majority will have its way as a result of customers from one of our major supermarkets voting to (effectively) ban the bag. From February, a 10c voluntary donation will be introduced per single-use plastic bag at New World before a moratorium by the end of 2018. But, at SOUTH we can’t help wonder whether there could be an alternative, ‘environmentallyfriendly’ option which wouldn’t leave shoppers having to fork out extra at the checkout by purchasing ‘long life’ material bags instead. Why didn’t New World’s parent company, the mighty Foodstuffs, include an option in its BagVote for the re-introduction of those free
paper bags of yesteryear while wearing the cost itself? After all, paper does still grow on trees! “While paper bags seem like a great alternative, they are very water and energy hungry to produce,” Foodstuffs’ Antoinette Laird explains. “We’re constantly researching the alternatives to single-use plastic bags to see if we can find something that meets our customers’ needs, while also being environmentally friendly.” While I’m no expert on recycling this does make sense to me, and I’m actually quite surprised to have received such a succinct and (seemingly at least) commonsense response from a media spokesperson.
LET THE AUTOMOWER DO ALL THE WORK Keeping your lawn healthy can be a lot of hard work. The Husqvarna Automower® isn’t just a lawn mower. It’s a robotic concept that does the work for you — without your supervision, around the clock.
Progressive Enterprises (operator of Countdown) is also looking to ditch plastic. While it may not have been quite as ‘progressive’ in offering customers the opportunity to vote, Countdown spokesperson, James Walker, says extensive research was undertaken before a decision was made. “We saw customer support for a phase-out increase to the point where 83 percent supported [it]. Customers were already changing their behaviour; more and more were bringing their own bags.” As with New World, Countdown is also working towards providing other alternatives in addition to re-useable material bags. Similarly, paper is unlikely to make the cut. “Paper bags are probably not the answer... their production is
worse for the environment. The energy/carbon that goes into their manufacture means they have a larger environmental input. Bringing reusable bags into store is the best environmental outcome,” Mr Walker says. These moves alone may not make a great deal of difference in staving off the global warming apocalypse, but at least we won’t be left holding the bag! Two of our supermarkets’ gigantic ecological footprints have now been reduced... slightly. Welcome to our (Brave) New World, but unlike Aldous Huxley’s ‘utopia’, it’s one in which ‘ending’ may not be better than re-using, and the Countdown for plastic begins.
