‘Syrians not refugees’ By MARIANNE KELLY

yrians should be labelled ‘economic migrants’, says John Roy, the prominent Howick businessman and former Honorary Polish Consul to New Zealand. The tidal wave of Syrian people flooding into European Community (EU) countries are not refugees, he says, and New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key should have stuck to his guns when he was initially reticent about Aotearoa upping its intake. Mr Roy is one of 1.7 million Polish people who were forced from their homes in Eastern Poland to labour camps throughout Siberia at the start of World War II. He was also one of 733 Polish children who were welcomed to New Zealand and started their lives at the Polish Children’s Camp in Pahiatua, Wairarapa. He went on

to pursue a successful business career and established the Polish Heritage Trust Museum in Howick. “We must distinguish between immigrants and people who are refugees,” he says. The Syrian migrants are not refugees, he says. “Many are young well-educated people who are running away from their homes. Many are young men who should be staying in their own country and fighting the enemy. “After World War II there were genuine refugees and New Zealand took 733 children and 105 adults who came here in 1944 as guests of New Zealand,” he says. Original plans were for them to return to Poland, but after Eastern Poland became part of the former USSR they had no homes to go back to, so the New Zealand Government gave them perma-

nent residence. “I didn’t run away from my home,” Mr Roy says. “I was deported to Russia and after the war had no country to go back to. Fortunately the New Zealand Government offered to take us and we became immigrants. But we never ran away or left our country [of our own volition].” John Key, he says, should not have been pushed into upping the country’s refugee quota. New Zealand will take in 750 Syrian people over the next three years including 600 above its annual quota. “They will come and live in their own groups,” Mr Roy says. “They will not become New Zealanders. It will just be a different place for them to live. “Anyone coming here as an immigrant should become a New Zealander, accept our way of life and live in a New Zealand society.

It should not be a place where they can swing from one to the other.” Some of the Syrian migrants have been quoted in international media saying they would return to their homes when the conflict in Syria is over. Mr Roy places much of the responsibility for the crisis on the head of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Germany, he says, is losing population and short of workers. “If they were genuine refugees we should take them. There are wars everywhere and if they were genuine refugees we should put our hands up and help them. “But the Syrians are not refugees. Of course they all want to go to Germany. It’s the richest country in Europe. They don’t want to be stuck on a Greek island. But we’ve seen the problems resulting in Austria and Hungary. It’s shocking.”

ponsorship for Pat and Paddy Smith doesn’t mean their name on a billboard at an event. Rather, they have just completed a 23-year hands-on financial relationship with a popular brass band. Over that time, wherever Howick Brass went, Pat and Paddy were along for the ride. Pat doesn’t play a musical instrument – “only the fool” says his wife Paddy. But the couple’s long-standing friendship with the now retired Howick Brass director of music, Graeme Brown, immersed them in the world of national and international competitions. Pat is a fourth generation Smith, running the family company Smiths Locksmith, established in 1880, for many years and only recently retired from its management. He and Graeme met 36 years ago through the business when Pat would drop off newly-cut keys to Graeme’s Pakuranga home on his way home to Bucklands Beach. Graeme, who now lives in Dannemora, has 42 years of brass banding under his belt, 30 of them with the Howick Brass Band which was established in 1959. He conducted the band for 12 years until his retirement in August last year. “I was president

When the Super City was formed, Manukau came out of the title and, now that the sponsorship has ended, full circle has been turned with the band known as Howick Brass. “We went everywhere with the band,” Pat says. “We supplied caps, a cornet for Graeme [which he still plays], percussion gear, music stands, a lot of items over and above the sponsorship. “It’s sad that the sponsorship has ended, but we can still enjoy the band. We are both life members and free to come and go. It was a great 23 years. But it was time for a change as I was retiring from the business.” Graeme says the band

members are full of appreciation for what the Smiths have done. “We’ve had a super 23 years and not many bands in C grade have that type of sponsorship. “It was fantastic and a large part of our success because it allowed us to go to competitions throughout New Zealand. A couple of times we went to Australia. For a competition in the South Island it would cost $45,000 to get the band to Invercargill. Without the sponsorship we would not have been able to participate.” The biggest thing, Graeme says, was having active sponsors. They were not just a name in a sponsor’s sign. “Everywhere the band went we used to go,” Pat and Paddy say. “We went to wherever they were competing in contests.” There are many happy memories, especially when the band would climb on board the back of a truck and play Christmas carols as they cruised around local streets. The Smiths put on a party every Christmas at which the band would play after the carols drive. Neighbours and local business people were invited. “We had people sitting out on our fence listening in,” Pat and Paddy say. “Even the police boat Deodar pulled up on the waterfront to listen one time.”

Girl now hears loud and clear By Rumer-Grace Archer Courtney Nairn, although a quiet 12-year-old, can certainly hear loudly now thanks to her cochlear implant. Courtney’s hearing loss was first discovered when she was 18 months old and was fitted with hearing aids in both ears. However Courtney’s hearing progressively became worse resulting in a complete hearing loss in her left ear. She was put forward for consideration for a cochlear implant through The Hearing House and received her implant four years ago. The positive effects were immediate, Courtney’s mum Catherine Nairn says. “Her marks went up at school and her speech became

incredible.” Courtney is in Year 8 at Mission Heights Junior College, attending mostly mainstream classes but is also part of the Kelston Deaf Education Unit within the school. The confident young girl has not been affected by the cochlear implant in her social life and her friends tend to stick up for her rather than stare and ask questions. I guess because she’s had it relatively young she’s grown up with it so to her it’s normal and because the deaf unit has been there since the school started, it’s a part of the day” Catherine says. “There’s not the stigma attached that there probably was a while ago. Even in public and family life and in church no one has ever

said anything, everyone’s very accepting.” Catherine cannot offer enough praise for The Hearing House and the support they have provided. “From our point of view they’ve been wonderful, they organised to get the implant done, they’ve done the follow up visits and assessments. They are a lovely bunch of people; they do amazing work for deaf kids,” Catherine says. The former owners of a local Indian restaurant could be jailed for up to seven years or fined $100,000 for flouting immigration law and exploiting workers. According to the New Zealand Herald Joti Jain and Rajwinder Singh Grewal who jointly owned the Masala restaurant chain, with branches in Bucklands Beach, Mission Bay and Takapuna, have admitted to paying as little as $2 an hour to a worker. Court documents show Jain significantly underpaid four employees and misled them with letters leading them to believe they would obtain a visa. She pleaded guilty to 15 charges of immigration and exploitation charges at the Auckland District Court earlier this week and name suppression for both the accused was lifted. Gagandeep Singh worked as a waiter at the Bucklands Beach and Mission Bay branches for nearly a year without a valid visa. He was offered an assistant manager position working 30-40 hours at $15 an hour but instead worked up to 11 hours a day, and was paid $250 after a week of unpaid “training”. Grewal, who managed the Bucklands Beach Masala, pleaded guilty to five charges, and like Jain, faces up to seven years imprisonment or a $100,000 fine. It is believed the prosecution will seek more than $58,000 in reparation from Jain. The pair is expected to appear in court next month for sentencing. Masala in Bucklands Beach was taken over by new owner Divyapreet Kour early this year and the restaurant has been renamed to Salt.

Award-winning nurse humbled by opportunities

ave Sevilleno says it was a bit of luck that got him his first start in the healthcare industry in New Zealand. Back in 2008 the then 23-year-old Philippines-trained nurse had moved to New Zealand but was finding the job market difficult. He was getting buses around to look for jobs, dropping his CV at retirement villages and resthomes around the city with no success. “I was desperate to get a job. I went everywhere to knock on doors and drop in my CV. Then my friend phoned to say she’d taken a job, but she knew there was one going at Anthony Wilding Retirement Village in Christchurch. I was interviewed and I got the job. It was pure luck.’’ It is precisely at this point that Liz Dilger, the Ryman Healthcare village manager who interviewed Dave back then, would step in and

say there is nothing lucky about Dave’s success as a nurse. From the start Dave was a bright, willing and impressive candidate whose hard work and skill have got him where he is today. Dave, now 30, started out as a caregiver but has taken every training and promotion opportunity that has come his way. His hard work and study has paid off. He has been steadily promoted through the ranks and is now the special care unit co-ordinator at Ryman’s Diana Isaac Retirement Village in Christchurch. He has 40 residents with Alzheimer’s and Dementia in his care, with 15 staff to manage. Not bad for 30! He has also just been awarded Ryman’s top accolade for 2015, winning the company’s outstanding nursing achievement award at a ceremony in Melbourne.

Dave’s mum was a nurse and he always felt that he was destined to join the profession. While he trained in general medicine he is happy to admit that his heart used to sink when he was rostered on to the special care unit. But the more he did, the more he found he had a genuine passion for caring for older people with dementia. “The challenge is to understand our residents’ frailties and to try and turn a negative into a positive. We’re not just here to help the residents but to help the families through it as well. It is like mentoring, it is hard for families to know what to expect with the disease. That’s also a challenge.’’ “Dementia is really tough on families. To see their loved one’s memories erased is hard.’’ A good day at work for him means going home knowing that

all the residents in his unit are happy, comfortable and content. An extra good day is when he or his staff get acknowledgement from the families they deal with. “A simple thank you can make you feel amazing. It means they appreciate and understand what we do.’’ He says he loves living in New Zealand and is here for good. “What’s great about New Zealand is the opportunities that are given to us by the company. I never thought they would give foreign-trained nurses like me management roles. I thought we would just be part of the labour force only. Ryman gives us great opportunities.’’ His wife is also a nurse and the couple have a three year old and another on the way. They have permanent residency in New Zealand and Dave says New Zealand is a great place to live and work.

Bullying story a ‘misrepresentation’ By NICK KRAUSE

local high school has defended its continued strong stance against bullying while raising questions over misrepresentation in a television news report targeting the school. TV3 reported on August 27 a story headed “Auckland school bullying persists despite ‘big stand’” in which it talks of images emerging of extremely threatening graffiti on bathroom stalls. The messages on Howick College walls, it reported, are allegedly aimed at a young teen. Photos of the abusive messages were sent anonymously to 3News with a message alleging the graffiti is rampant through the girls’ toilets at the school. Howick College principal Iva Ropati told the Times the photos showing graffiti threats were “deeply disturbing” The incident occurred more than two months ago and was treated seriously at the time of reporting, he said. An investigation was carried out by senior staff that involved consultation with parents and students. “Due to privacy issues, and our concern for the wellbeing of the student mentioned, we are unable to comment on the specifics of the case,” Mr Ropati said. “The student in question at the time was extensively sup-

ported and this has been ongoing. To date, the student has not reported any further incidents. “Since the matter has been raised again through social media, we again engaged with the student and can confirm that the child reported no further graffiti incidents and stated feeling safe at school.” Howick College continues to take a leading role in addressing the societal and nationwide issue of bullying, he said. “In both 2014 and 2015 we surveyed the whole school in relation to their experience of bullying and how, as a community, we could effectively respond,” he said. “We are proud of our proactive stance on this matter and believe no other secondary school in New Zealand would be so courageous as to seek this information and share it with the community.” In comparison to the recently released national ‘Census @ School’ data regarding ‘whether bullying is a problem in your school’ Howick College’s figures show it is nine per cent below the reported national average. Bullying is an issue that schools often feel hesitant to discuss, yet schools know that bullying has a significant impact on the wellbeing of New Zealand youth. The college’s event, The Big Stand, has evolved signifi-

cantly, Mr Ropati said. The Big Stand is a student-led initiative that gives students an opportunity to raise awareness, and discuss bullying related issues that directly impacts upon them. The TV3 online story came as the result of a TV3 online journalist’s post on the East Auckland Grapevine. “We note this post has subsequently been removed,” he said. “The printing of these photos [of the graffiti] out of their actual context puts the student mentioned at risk and is, at best, a misrepresentation of the situation regarding bullying at Howick College. “It was heartening to see the strong support from our parent and local community about our stand on this issue in response to the Grapevine post.”

I think, besides Argentina, the All Blacks are in a fairly easy pool, not to overlook the other teams. I know this is something everyone, especially the public, are a little concerned about. In the past, back in 2007 we were in a similar situation, we had a relatively easy pool leading up to the quarter final, and I think we meet France in the quarter final again this year. The management though, I’m sure, are well prepared and have made sure the boys are ready for the games ahead of them, whether the games prove to be easy or not. When the All Blacks meet Argentina for their first game this weekend, I think Argen-

tina are going to be tougher than we expect and are definitely looking to give us a good crack. They will be well prepared, wanting to start off strong for the first game of the Cup. On the other hand Australia have definitely been matched harder in their pool being up against England, Wales, Fiji, and Uruguay and so it’s hard to tell how they will perform as they will definitely be playing tougher games. This will give them a really good run so they will have to focus more on not slipping up. Another pool to look out for especially is Pool D with Ireland, they are ones to watch out for. I definitely think you could view the All Blacks as being at a disadvantage in an easier pool with not as much competition as other teams. But in saying that I’m sure management have done their homework, they know what the team needs to focus on and

Industries have been developed to cater for the water tightness issues focusing on the blanket-remedy approach of recladding and have lost sight of what the basic problem is – water tightness. “The belief is that a total replacement is easier than determining what the individual causes are and fixing them appropriately,” Terry says. LCS is the first process to

address this issue from a different perspective, allowing each and every individual house to be attended to independently.

After last year’s fantastic summer, Howick Sailing Club is building up for yet another shipshape season ahead. Our sailors enjoyed a number of stellar performances in 2014/2015, says Commodore Marc Frewin. “We’ve had some excellent results last season with a strong presence at local, regional, national and even international events!” Notably, Howick sailor Les Gallagher recently represented New Zealand at the Paper Tiger Catamaran International Championships in Sydney, Australia. However, Marc and the club’s enthusiastic committee are not resting on their laurels, with their eye on growing the junior and senior sailing fleets. “We’re keen to develop the next echelon of young sailors with robust learn-to-sail and coaching programmes for juniors, as well as Sunday Club sailing for the race fleets.” The investment in junior sailing is already paying off with young sailors Christopher Eaglen and Jack Frewin winning the Optimist Green and Optimist Open classes in the inaugural Ivan Raos Memorial Junior East Auckland Series. The Series is gaining momentum with its second season beginning on October 18 with Howick Sailing

Club hosting the first race. It has boosted camaraderie and interaction between local clubs including Bucklands Beach, Maraetai and Glendowie. October 18 also marks the start of the Learn to Sail programme, with participants graduating to ‘Rainbow Fleet’ development sailing on Sunday afternoons. Howick Sailing Club is one of the oldest and wellregarded sailing clubs in East Auckland with the 80-year-old organisation responsible for grooming some of New Zealand’s best, including America’s Cup stars Andrew Taylor and Joey Allan and International Match Racer William Tiller. The club’s core senior fleet consists of Laser sailors and mixed catamarans including Paper Tigers, A-Class, Nacras and Hobies – all classes are welcome. Offering a mix of double-handed and single-handed sailing, there’s something for every level. “We would like to extend an invite especially to any new Laser and Catamaran sailors to come sail with us on Sunday, September 27, with racing starting at 2pm,” says Marc. hey have one of the most inherently dangerous jobs in the world. With New York City being the number one target for terrorism the globe over, they deal with terror campaigns every day. Top brass from New York City Fire Department (NYFD) deputy assistant chief Robert Strong and battalion chief Steven Sanfilippo spoke to the students of Pakuranga College on 9/11 changing their lives forever. “It changed the way NYFD functions and it changed the entire world. “Anyone who travels by plane will know that,” said fire veteran, Mr Strong. In Auckland, to pay homage to the New Zealand fire fighters who gave up their lives whilst saving others and to remember the 343 fire fighters of 9/11 who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives, the fire chiefs with almost four decades of service each, were here on the invitation of fireman Tony Scott of Auckland Airport Rescue Fire Brigade. Mr Scott has been organising the 1103 Sky Tower Stair Challenge that has raised more than $25 million for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand since it began in 2005. Talking about the two pas-

senger airlines that were deliberately crashed into the Twin Towers, Mr Sanfilippo said that it is the city that just keeps on giving. “There are still people dying of 9/11 related illnesses.” However, out of extreme adversity comes a strong sense of unity. “Earlier, the NYFD used to function individually but now all the government agencies get together and pool resources, the minute anyone hears of any kind of terrorist situation, arson, chemical leak or natural calamities.” The NYFD that comprises of 16,000 personnel is responsible for the safety of

nine million people. In a city that has only grown vertically, Mr Strong says they have the keys to every apartment in New York City. Meaning an axe and whatever equipment they need to break into it. “There is a 98-storey building coming up and it’s up to us to figure out a strategy for every square inch, in case fire. “We are responsible for protecting the people of New York City.” Making light of it Mr Sanfilippo added saying: “Whenever my wife and I go to a big function she finds her way to the seat and I first look for the exit, in case of evacuation. It is force of habit.”

Young master feels the blues Lloyd Spiegel’s conquered his native Australia and the world, and New Zealand is next on his hit list By PJ TAYLOR

big man with a heavyweight reputation in the blues music arena is looking to grow his already substantial fan base. The master craftsman, vocalist, songwriter and guitarist is a blues legend across the Tasman at the relatively young age of 36, a talent deserving of all the praise and admiration he generates there. Spiegel has played in New Zealand before, but his upcoming tour is the first into the North Island, and Howick music fans are in for a genuine treat when he performs at Uxbridge Creative Centre on Friday, September 18. He’s been recognised with awards and accolades regularly over the past decade in Australia, including the coveted male blues artist of the year in 2005, and he’s produced eight critically acclaimed albums. Bluesmen tend to be stereotypically viewed as people in their dusty years, weatherbeaten by the endless touring and trials and tribulations of

everyday life. But Spiegel caught a dose at an early age, as he explains happily on the phone from his Melbourne home between shows. “I guess it was always going to happen, especially when I was exposed to the blues when I was young,” he says. “My dad was always playing records by [the late, great] Brownie McGhee, and Australian blues hero Dutch Tilders, the godfather of the Aussie blues, lived in a bungalow at the bottom of our gar-

den.” From that encouraging and nurturing environment, Spiegel set out on his now 25-year career of performing. By the time he was 13, he was out in the wider world, touring the blues and sharing bills with some of music’s greatest names. He’s played alongside the likes of blues kings McGhee, Buddy Guy and Luther Allison, supported the late geniuses Ray Charles and Etta James, the kings of Americana Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, and Brit guitar hero Peter Frampton. Yet, of the many long-lasting memories of being a bluesman on the road, Spiegel says his finest are the off-stage moments. “They’re the special connections you get from touching people through music. I’ve been so fortunate to have enjoyed people’s generous hospitality in so many places.” Spiegel is just completing a 32-show tour of Australia in 45 days to mark his 25th anniversary.

Spring has arrived! It’s a wonderful season when every keen gardener gets to see the fruits of their labours start to bloom. As the soil warms up and there is more daylight, spring bulbs and plants begin to flower and sprout their fresh new spring growth. Its nature’s planting time so it’s the perfect opportunity to get stuck in and plant all your favourite spring/summer flowers and get your vegetable garden underway. September is also Bee Aware Month, the National Beekeepers Association’s (NBA) national awareness month, aimed at highlighting the importance of the honey bee in New Zealand. If you live in warmer areas then early tomato, capsicum, courgette, cucumber, pumpkin and celery can be planted directly into your garden, but always use a protective cloche in cooler areas. Jerusha Naidoo’s fascination for science and the intricacies of the human brain was fostered by her teachers at Edgewater College. Ten years later, she is still in touch with Biology head of department, Terry Gordon, who has invited her to Edgewater College to talk to the students about the groundbreaking work she does. “I had a natural leaning towards genetics,” says the Pakuranga girl who has just submitted her PhD thesis on gene therapy. Jerusha has been selected as a Neurological Foundation Miller Scholar, a highly sought after scholarship amongst New Zealand’s neuroscientists. “I feel really privileged to have received this honour this early in my career,” she says. Her tryst with the neurological health began with a deeprooted interest in ‘the seat of human consciousness’. “All our cells have the same DNA, yet they all intrinsically know their functions,” she says with a sense of wonder and excitement. “The brain controls our emotions, thoughts and is responsible for so many functions like our breathing and movement. “When brain cells become diseased the effects can be detrimental.” Instead of taking up a job or travelling the world like any girl her age, Jerusha decided she wanted to work on a drug discovery for a diseased brain. The 29-year-old says working part time as a student at Howick Baptist Healthcare, where she came across residents suffering from Parkin-

sitting in a barn during a fierce thunder and lightning storm, on horseback cantering through sunny Canadian fields, then in the mud and filth of trench warfare and crossing no-man’s land as grotesquely-injured men tug on Charlie’s legs in their bid to get help. Canadian playwright Stephen Massicotte has set the play in a dream Mary has before she marries in 1920. The dream starts in 1914 when she and Charlie meet sheltering from a storm in a barn. My hobby is my job

Congratulations Jack, great achievement (“Is this NZ’s youngest pilot?” Times, September 10). Reading Jack’s story so far, read a lot like mine. I too took my first lesson at Ardmore aged 14 years. On my 16th birthday, before school started, my mum drove me out there to solo as I couldn’t drive a car by myself, yet, I could fly a plane. Another highlight was getting my private pilot licence in form 7 (year 13). It’s good Jack excels at his school studies. It is very easy to disregard school study for aviation theory but employers do look back at school marks

I may only be a second year university student but from the fundamental mathematical principles I was taught in high school, four percent of 40 per cent would actually be 1.6 per cent. Ignoring another contentious statement of how China supposedly has “whole schools dedicated to teaching students how to buy and sell real estate in NZ”, this somewhat poor lack of arithmetic manipulation does not add any weight to the argument which is already based on some questionable generalisations. All around were warm smiles as the delicious aroma of breakfast and freshly made coffee wafted across the deck. I reflected on the myth that the French are not friendly towards English speakers; if this was ever true, CroisiEurope has truly rewritten that story! CroisiEurope is a substantive French family owned cruise company, with more than 40 ships in their fleet. Although one of the largest and oldest cruise companies in Europe, the on-board atmosphere is relaxed, with a wonderful emphasis on experiencing the very best of French cuisine with fantastic table service for lunch and dinner – all served with a dazzling array of regional French wines or beer. I was on a cruise from the beautiful heritage city of Strasbourg in the Alsace region of France to cosmopolitan Amsterdam – six days of simple sailing along the waterways of the Rhine. Europe grew up along the rivers, so the ease of visiting historic cities and towns was made easy by the ship berthing in each of the historic centres we visited. The days were well designed with a mix of sailing lazily down the Rhine, with intriguing glimpses of history and daily life. There was always a great choice of indoor or places aboard from which to watch the world go by, depending if you were in a mood for a cappuccino or a wine. Marvon Downs homestead was built in 1931 for Archie and Gladys Millen on their 100acre town supply dairy farm. Designed by popular architect of the era, Norman Wade, the homestead was considered one of Auckland’s most modern homes. The farmhouse had a shell driveway, made from cockle shells from Eastern Beach. Two large phoenix palm trees dominated the front lawn. The farm was sold in 1971 for residential subdivision and when Pakuranga Road was widened in the 1970s one of the large phoenix palms was replanted opposite the Pakuranga Plaza shopping centre. The other palm remains at the site.

Creating a home away from home is an on-going project at Ambridge Rose Villa and the residents are enjoying the restoration of the homestead to its former glory. Early in 2015, Allan and Linda Sargeant were excited to take ownership of the historical property, Marvon Downs, that has been a rest home for more than 40 years. The couple have spent more than a decade caring for older people at Ambridge Rose Manor in Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga. To extend their family-oriented care they wanted a quaint home with character. “We were looking for a unique property that we could develop into a boutique-style rest home, where residents feel like they are in family-home surroundings,” says Allan. Formerly known as Marvon Downs Rest Home, the name was changed to Ambridge Rose Villa Rest Home to include it as part of the family of care facilities owned and operated by Allan and Linda. “The history of Marvon Downs homestead is important to us and we’ve included the story on our website,” says Allan. The décor makeover started in the original entrance, dining room, bathroom and lounge, and will continue throughout residents’ rooms and facilities. Family care As well as Linda and Allan at the helm of Ambridge Rose Villa, residents are cared for 24/7 by dedicated healthcare assistants who love their work.

Ambridge Rose Villa lifestyle The team at Ambridge Rose Villa plans fun activities that keep residents busy and involved with each other as well as community groups. “When musicians, toddlers, church groups and a tai chi instructor visit, it puts a sparkle in everyone’s eyes,” says Allan. “Families are encouraged to visit and we love putting on a barbecue every now and then to catch up with everyone.” Needs assessment for rest home care Families and guardians concerned about the lifestyle of an older person can request a needs assessment by their district health board and the care plan may recommend rest home care. Ambridge Rose Villa is an approved rest home care provider and is regularly audited. Residents are assisted with activities for daily living, some personal hygiene care and possibly mobility assistance. They would not require high levels of daily nursing and medical care.

Chicken drumsticks with kumara

Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

• 900g chicken drumsticks • 500g kumara • 3 spring onions, sliced • 1½ tsp Gregg’s garlic granules • 1 tsp Gregg’s sage • 1 cup living parsley, roughly chopped • 1 lemon, juice and zest • 100g sesame seeds, toasted • 200g De Winkle plain unsweetened yoghurt • 1 bag green beans, top and tail

Method:

Heat the oven to 180OC. Season the drumsticks and roast for 40 minutes or until cooked. In a large bowl, put the kumara, spring onion, 1 tsp garlic granules, sage, lemon juice, 1 tbs olive oil and ½ the parsley. Season well. Roast for 20 minutes, stirring a couple of times, until soft and glazed. Meanwhile make the sauce. Lightly toast the sesame seeds in a pan then grind/chop them with ½ tsp garlic granules until as close to a paste as you can get. In a medium bowl, whisk together the sesame seed mix, yoghurt, lemon zest and the remaining parsley (chopped more finely). Season well. Put some water onto boil and blanch the green beans. Serve altogether with a spoonful of yoghurt dressing each.

Rules for wastewater Everyone should be conscious of what they pour or flush down private drains so that the public network is not affected

Some basic rules are:

When storm water enters the wastewater network, it can cause overflows. ■■ Make sure your gully trap is raised off the ground to prevent rain water from entering the wastewater network. Gully traps also protect a family’s health by ensuring that, in the event of a blockage, wastewater will not overflow into a home. The wastewater network involves close to 8000 kilometres of pipes and 165,610 manholes. The wastewater treatment process is almost entirely chemical-free, relying on bacteria to break down organic materials which are then converted to biogas. Biogas produced in the wastewater treatment plants at Mangere and Rosedale generates more than twothirds of the plants’ electricity needs. Overall, the wastewater treatment plants generate 143,855kW of electricity a day. That’s enough to power 6563 households.

rate Australia and South Africa the main threats to the All Blacks’ hopes of retaining the Webb Ellis Trophy at the Rugby World Cup. Despite having smashed the Wallabies 41-13 to avenge their disappointing Sydney loss, the All Blacks will know their task was made easier by the inexplicable decision of Wallabies coach Michael Cheika in making six changes to the team that clinched the Rugby Championship against them on home soil. The most crucial was his decision not to start the brilliant David Pocock at No 8 after he and Michael Hooper cleaned out the All Blacks at the breakdown. Another was the decision to rest veteran second five Matt Giteau whose guiding hand was sorely missed. While Australia lacks New

Agnew’s Angle Zealand’s depth, their rushed defence in Sydney showed they could rattle the All Blacks into errors and their classy backs have the attacking class to capitalise on a much improved scrum. However, I believe Cheika made a mistake in failing to pick halfback Nic White for the World Cup after his injection from the bench and superb try sealed his team’s win in Sydney. Although Bernard Foley and Quade Cooper are his World Cup first fives, second five Matt Toomua may be a better choice in the pivot role for the crunch matches.

In Tevita Kuridrani, Adam Ashley Cooper, Henry Speight and the exciting Israel Folau, they have plenty of backs who can make breaks and score tries. Consequently, they should win their Pool of Death which includes England, Wales, Fiji and minnows Uruguay. Interestingly, South Africa’s fate could hinge on whether they sacrifice highly respected captain Jean de Villiers to allow exciting youngsters Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel to form the centre combination outside the gifted Handre Pollard. That combo proved a handful before the All Blacks again demonstrated their fighting spirit to win the Ellis Park classic and the return from injury of powerful No 8 Duane Vermeulen should strengthen their pack. While the All Blacks deserve

their favouritism tag, they won’t be taking Argentina lightly in Monday’s Pool C opener at Wembley following the Pumas’ upset of the Springboks in the Rugby Championship although the Boks reversed that result in a return match. As usual, Argentina have some strong forwards but not the back line to test the experienced All Blacks mettle. Easy wins should follow against Namibia and Georgia before a more bruising encounter against rugged Tonga who beat 2011 World Cup finalists France in pool play. With Daniel Carter having failed to survive the last two world cups, the hope is he will remain injury-free this time and repeat the form he showed in the last Bledisloe Cup test against Australia. Barrett and Colin Slade had the versatility factor to support their selection, I still feel Lima Sopoaga was an unlucky omission following his outstanding form in the Rugby Championship for the champion Highlanders. Just four Highlanders in the 31-man World Cup squad is poor reward for their effort. Still, it remains a strong squad with the welcome injection of electrifying test rookies Nehe Milner-Skudder and Waisake Naholo although an easy romp through their pool games is not ideal preparation for the tougher ones to follow. TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Sports bites Pakuranga swimmer’s glory Pakuranga College swam to victory at the New Zealand High School Swimming Championships in Hamilton over the weekend, with a total of five gold medals and six silvers, ranking the highest among local schools. The relay team of Tyron Henry, Rocky Mulinuu, Phoebe Harris and Yulia Pechorina, all 14, won the mixed 200m freestyle relay in the 15 and under age group and set a new record for distance, beating Stratford High School and Macleans College. In the 200m medley relay, Stratford High School overtook Pakuranga, pushing them into second place and Macleans finishing again in third. Individually, Tyron Henry won four gold medals and four silver medals and Phoebe Harris won one silver. Tyron was the youngest swimmer selected for the elite 50m freestyle “skins” race among the top eight swimmers across all ages in New Zealand. Pakuranga College finished up with a combined total of 315 points, 100 points ahead of their closest rival Kings College with 213 points, and well ahead of St Kents with 153 and Howick College with 93. Saint Kentigern College students, Hayden Church and Jonte Wright performed incredibly. Church won a gold medal in the 16-18 years 100m freestyle, winning by half a second in 53.67s. Wright placed second in the 15 years 100m breaststroke and third in the 15 years 50m and 200m breaststroke.

t Kentigern First XV Rugby captain Dalton Papalii has been selected for the NZ Schools representative team. Last week, Papalii was named in a 53-strong extended squad to attend a training camp in Palmerston North over the weekend. This week the open-side flanker was announced as one of four specialist loose forwards in the 26-player NZ Schools team. The players were chosen following a thorough viewing programme and selection process that took place over the course of the season, culminating at the National Top Four First XV Championship. It was at this showpiece tournament that the New Zealand Secondary Schools selection panel met to determine who would attend the development camp. said there was good reason to feel upbeat about this year’s group. “As with previous years, the panel is again happy with the level of talent and coverage across most positions.
