new set of eyes is analysing serious crime incidents happening in the eastern suburbs, including a recent spate of bank robberies, after a role swap. Counties Manukau East CIB (criminal investigation branch) head, detective senior sergeant Darrell Harpur, recently exchanged titles with Counties Manukau Police’s head of adult sexual assault, detective senior sergeant Kevin Tiernan. Mr Tiernan and his team are now investigating a series of bank robberies occurring in just over a week, where in all cases an unarmed man entered a bank demanding cash from staff. ASB in Botany Junction was robbed last Monday, Kiwibank in Otara on Monday, and BNZ in Manukau on Tuesday. As a result, Mr Tiernan is urging bank staff and the public to

he felling of an ancient oak tree at a Howick address has riled a neighbour even though the axing was legal. A massive oak in the modest-sized front yard at 89 Bleakhouse Road was dropped last week, as parts of its enormous top were hanging perilously over the property and that of a neighbour. Homeowner Mike Henderson told the Times the move was purely down to safety reasons. He said it was a shame, but the old tree had become a significant hazard. An unknown neighbour, who alerted the Times last Thursday, said the oak was more than 100 years old. The Times tried unsuccessfully to get back in touch with the concerned neighbour. Benedict Ferguson, acting manager compliance, resource consenting at Auckland Council said there were no general tree protection rules in that part of Bleakhouse Road because it was located in the urban environment under the Resource Management Act (RMA). “No trees on the site are included in notable tree schedules. Because of this, resource consent is not required for the removal or

trimming of trees on this property,” Mr Ferguson said. “We do encourage homeowners to check before they chop to see if there are any protection rules for trees on their properties.”

‘Check before you chop’ is still the best advice following changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA) which sees the vast majority of trees on private ‘urban’ properties in the city no longer protected. The law change, which comes into effect on Friday, is a direct result of government amendments to the RMA in 2013, which lifted

Penny Pirrit, Auckland Council’s general manager of plans and places, says the changes to the RMA do not allow the council to reintroduce general tree protection rules. “Through changes to the RMA over the last few years, we are unable to include any general tree protection rules on most ‘urban’ sites. “Exceptions to this include notable or ‘scheduled’ trees (which are listed in the district plans),

trees within reserves, any area subject to a conservation management plan or conservation management strategy and trees within a Significant Ecological Area (SEA). These trees will continue to be protected under the Unitary Plan.” Aucklanders are being urged to ‘Check before you Chop’ and seek advice from the council before felling or damaging a protected tree to avoid possible enforcement action.

Blackmailers calling on Skype Six men have fallen victim to an online scam in the Counties Manukau District over the last month. Local donates $10 million to fund cancer research

hile his peers play golf and enjoy the finer things in life, one local self-made millionaire chose instead to donate his hard-earned wealth to cancer research. Bucklands Beach businessman Liangren Li, who was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year, has made a $10 million donation to cancer research at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The Li Family Fund will be set up as an endowment fund that will provide annual interest for investing in cancer research. Faculty dean Professor John Fraser says the faculty is delighted with the generous donation, the largest in its 50-year history and will help retain brilliant young research fellows in New Zealand. “By establishing a trust with the University, Mr Li will ensure that his name will live on in cancer research in New Zealand for many years to come and may just be responsible for the breakthroughs that I know will come with continued research. This is a wonderful legacy and a tribute to his generosity,” says Professor Fraser. Mr Li says he had been

thinking about ways to contribute to society long before the diagnosis. “For a business person, I have always thought that the biggest contribution you can make is through philanthropy. I want to set an example for my children to do good things and create a model for them to aspire to.” He chose the University of Auckland after discussion with his son, Zeyin, who is a doctor, because of the reputation of its cancer research programme. Having led a healthy, smokefree lifestyle, Mr Li’s diagnosis came as a shock. His wife Jenny Han says, “For the first couple of months we struggled to believe the

diagnosis, because it seemed so unlikely. He doesn’t smoke and his family back in China is very healthy and long-lived.” After 15 sessions of radiotherapy, over the course of three weeks, Mr Li’s tumour (initially 7.4cm) has more than halved in size and he is now on an anti-cancer drug that slows the spread of the cancer. The 61-year-old father of two has worked hard all his life and still goes to work each day at his offices in Sir William Ave, East Tamaki. The highly adaptable philanthropist, originally from China, moved to New Zealand in 1995 and started a business importing plumbing supplies from China in a home garage in

Christchurch, before moving to Union Road, Howick. Six months later, the business expanded to a commercial warehouse in East Tamaki’s Greenmount Drive. Today the qualified civil engineer has diversified his trade, with successful forays into property development and forestry. His 28-year-old son Zeyin left his job as house surgeon in Hawke’s Bay Hospital last year to help run the family business and his 11-year-old daughter, Chloe, attends Bucklands Beach Primary School. Mr Li admits he is starting to slow down. “I’ve always worked hard – there were no weekends, no holidays. But now I get tired easily and I want to push my son to do more.” He says he hasn’t thought yet about how to spend his spare time and wants to pass on his knowledge to the younger generation. “When you’ve worked so hard all your life, work turns into a hobby,” he says. “I hope [the donation] will not be my last if I am doing well.” The family is closely involved with how the money will be spent and are part of an advisory board to the fund.

Will the old crew let the ABs down? Obviously the main strength of the All Black’s Rugby World Cup team is the experience within it. There are a lot of guys that have come through from the 2011 World Cup, the winning cup, proving an advantage to our team. There are also a few boys in the team who have played over 100 tests for the All Blacks and that really shows experience is on their side. There are some new and exciting players adding strength to the team, especially Nehe Milner-Skudder and Waisake Naholo. These two players have got X-factor. They both have speed, great footwork and offloading abilities. They have played consistently throughout

the Super Season and the tests they have played so far and this reflects their significance in the team. In regards to Naholo, the fact that he is still recovering from an injury makes me wonder whether he will be able to capture the form he had in Super Rugby. It was a big disappointment to see Charles Piutau and Lima Sopoaga missing out on the team. Piutau especially, he played incredibly well in his tests this year but I think signing offshore early didn’t help his cause. I read an article that in his meeting with the All Blacks coaches on mis-selection, they said his move to Irish Club Ulster next season was not a factor in their decision but I

don’t agree. Sopoaga also had a very successful year with Super Rugby and then in the one and only test he played this year, he definitely proved a worthwhile selection. Sopoaga missing out, I think, is to do with management only wanting one specialist number 10 and right now that is Carter. The team really only has one weakness in my opinion. The team’s main and only weakness is the older players not performing; especially the ones that didn’t play so well in the Super Rugby season like Woodcock, Mealamu, Carter and the Franks brothers. If we don’t play the right combinations, the team may not perform to the best of their abilities so team selections will

aining recognition for massive business growth was rather unexpected for a local woman who launched her own business 18 months ago. Howick entrepreneur, Jo Mankelow, unassumingly sat at her very first New Zealand Bookkeepers Association conference when it was announced she had won the Emerging Bookkeeper of the Year award. “The association recognised what I have achieved during the past 18 months, which has seen my business grow from zero to 79 clients in 18 months,” says Mrs Mankelow. “I was gobsmacked and it was good attending the conference to learn more about the bookkeeping sector.” At a time when many Auckland businesses are frantically busy and struggling to find good staff Mrs Mankelow could have opted to stay employed in her secure bookkeeping job. The Damaging Effects of Forward Head Posture (FHP)

he effects of posture on health are becoming more evident. Spinal pain, headaches, moodiness, blood pressure, pulse rate and lung capacity are among the many functions most easily influenced by posture. Many symptoms, including pain, may be moderated or eliminated by improved posture. One of the most common postural problems is Forward Head Posture (FHP). Since we live in a forward facing world, the repetitive use of computers, TV, video games, trauma and even backpacks have forced the body to adapt to a forward head posture. Repetitive movements in a certain direction will strengthen nerve and muscle pathways to move that way more readily and cause postural changes over time. It is the repetition of forward head movements combined with poor postures and/or trauma that causes the body to adapt to a Forward Head Posture. ‘Text neck’ can also be a contributor of FHP. This is the term used to describe the injuries and pain sustained from looking down at mobile phones or other devices for too long. ‘Text neck’ does not occur only from texting, looking down to read also causes this. The symptoms associated with text neck include chronic headaches, upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and increased curvature of the spine. Ideally the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders,

like a golf ball sits on a tee. The weight of the head is more like a bowling ball than a golf ball, so holding it forward, out of alignment, puts a strain on your neck and upper back muscles. The result can be muscle fatigue, an aching neck, pain, burning sensations, jaw tension, headaches and bite problems. When spinal tissues are subjected to a significant load for sustained periods of time, they deform and undergo remodelling changes that could become permanent. Overtime FHP has been shown to flatten the normal neck curve, resulting in disc compression and damage, and early arthritis of the spine. Remember, long standing postural problems like FHP will cause spine and nerve damage, and symptoms rarely present early on but rather after several months or years. If you or anyone in your family has FHP, don’t wait until it’s too late!

ailure documented on national television may be a hard pill to swallow, but a former MasterChef contestant has not lost sight of her dream to open her own eatery one day. Real estate agent Victoria Koszegi of Howick’s Barfoot & Thompson branch, Picton Street, was booted out of MasterChef NZ in a shocking double elimination recently. The 27-year-old who made the top 16 says despite having watched previous seasons of MasterChef, she never expected the pressure to be so high. “You can’t describe how intense it is. People who let their emotions show, which was me at one point, can’t let it bother them. “It’s survival of the mentally and emotionally fittest. So if you have it right, then your food will shine and you need to have your head together.” Ms Koszegi says she was composed up until her final appearance where she served up a lamb shank dish and a berry cheesecake that was far from perfect. “I fell apart. That was frustrating.” If given the chance to do it all over again, she says she wouldn’t change anything, but she won’t “stuff up”. The confident, self-assured redhead returned to work, tightlipped about her performance. Since the episode has aired, Ms Koszegi says life is now back

to normal and she is focusing on real estate with the aim to open her own suburban, “healthy, rustic” cafe or bar. “I’m focused on real estate at the moment so I don’t have a specific timeframe. It’s more if I see the right opportunity, the right location or the right person to start it with, then I’ll seize it.” She says the dismal ratings of the TV show have not bothered her and she still would have entered the reality cooking competition. “I don’t really care about the ratings. I’m there to win a prize and follow a journey and a food dream.” The former local who has always loved food says her foray

So I came back and started working for dearest mother.” While she was away, her mother, real estate agent AnneMarie Koszegi had help, “but she missed me,” says Ms Koszegi. As for who she wants to win the competition, she likes the sound of butcher Richard Harris and pig farmer Leo Fernandez. “Leo really knows his stuff. It’s his heritage. Richard’s a real gentleman. for security after his family home was burgled in 2013. On August 4, 2014, his nine-month old dogs were seized by Auckland Council’s animal management due to a suspected sheep attack on a Whitford block and more recently, he was visited again by an animal management officer after another attack in Whitford on August 24 this year. He says a large ute shone spotlights into his property shortly after, with the driver shouting abuse about his dogs,

prompting him to call police. Last year, council impounded his dogs for two weeks while they investigated the incident. According to Whitford farm manager Lyall O’Brien, stool samples of the man’s dogs were taken to a laboratory for testing and came back negative for sheep’s wool. “There was no evidence of wool or anything like that so they basically had to let them go.” A long-time local, Mr O’Brien says he has seen

irresponsible dog owners and the man in question is not one of them. “They’re under good control. I seriously suspect that it wasn’t his dogs. I’ve never seen the dogs running loose. He’s a very responsible dog owner.” He says it could be an unfortunate mix-up. “I think what happened was the first time [the man] got pulled up on a knee-jerk reaction. [They thought] it was [German] shepherds and he’s got two shepherds up there.”

Everyone was visibly moved. Morning tea to celebrate Father’s Day at Owairoa School Primary School had some of the teachers trying hard to fight back the tears. The morning started off on the right note as Year two students holding up black and white portraits of them sang Ed Sheeran’s Photograph. The six-year-olds touched a deep chord as they sang, “we keep this love in this photograph; we made these memories for ourselves”. Principal Alan McIntyre asked everyone to observe 15 seconds of silence to remember their dads who were no more, following which teachers who had brought picture of their dads shared some meaningful memories. One of them said, “My father taught me what to look for in a man and I’m married to one with those qualities.” The emotionally charged mood was broken by some fun games and competitions, where the winners were awarded super dad capes and tools as prizes.

From members of Rotary and Lions Clubs to school principal, teachers, students and active members of the community, it was a full house at the speech competition hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. The idea behind the Botany Electorate Youth Parliament Speech Competition, held on September 2, at Howick Bowling Club, is to select a representative for the Youth Parliament next year. While the young MP joked, saying “he wasn’t going anywhere”, the event was held since MPs have been asked to select a young person from their area to participate in the Youth Parliament that sits at Parliament in Wellington next July. The lineup of students from Botany Downs Secondary College, Ormiston Senior College, Santa Maria College, Howick College and Elim Christian Col-

lege was impressive. Each speaker had very constructive suggestions on how important issues affecting the youth could be solved. However, it was Isaac Proctor of Elim Christian College that won everyone over with his speech delivery. The young public speaker had a natural sway over the audience as he spoke passionately about creating an inclusive society where different ethnicities that make up New Zealand should blend seamlessly into the Kiwi culture. The master of ceremonies for the evening, former Howick mayor Morrin Cooper kept everyone entertained as did the students of Somerville Intermediate with a soulful choir, while the public votes were being counted. Elim Christian College Murray Burton principal and assistant principal Carol Pottow both looked very pleased as Isaac Proctor won hands down.

Tennis fundraiser just a smash hit F undraising the best way they know how, with tennis, a tasty lunch and tempting auction items has resulted in a generous donation by the Howick Tennis Midweek Ladies group to Totara Hospice South Auckland. The $3800 donation was raised by members of the Howick club and supporters from several other clubs who came together for the fundraiser. On the first day of spring, members of the Midweek Ladies group presented a cheque which will contribute to a new project for a furnished unit to be built at the hospice. The unit will provide accommodation for hospice patients’ families, so they can be close by. The donation marked the opening of the new tennis season. The midweek session convenor, Donna Persson says it is special to be part of running a group who are

long-time friends, skilled players and who also have the desire to make a meaningful contribution to the wider community. “We enjoy our tennis mornings and our competitions. But we also plan ways to help out charities in our community. It is hard work at times, but is also rewarding and fun to work with such a great bunch of ladies,” she says. The Howick Tennis Midweek Ladies play weekly on Wednesday mornings. The new season is a good time to pick up a racket and learn to play or get back into the game. Coaching is available and experienced players are always happy to teach new members. The club plays at the Howick tennis courts, corner Howe and Wellington Streets, Howick. Cockle Bay School is bringing the magic back with its first carnival in 19 years on September 19, from 11am to 3pm. The most popular request from the Cockle Bay students was to have Unicorn rides, sparking the idea of magic and imagination and the theme Bringing the Magic Back. Cockle Bay School students were asked to help design the carnival mascot, a unicorn, with a purple creation by six-year-old Brooke Carpenter winning. There has been an outstanding response from parents with 69 volunteers having signed up from day one and more to come on the day. Businesses in the local community have helped donate products and services, and families will be busy making crafts and running stalls on the day. The carnival will be focused on family fun with rides, farmyard animals, crafts and baking, ensuring a truly magical day for everyone.

‘I’m overwhelmed’ By Marianne Kelly

krainian migrant Halyna Tsalko (pictured) is overwhelmed with the kindness and support she has received to raise $3016 for her sick sister from a Howick garage sale. The Times told Halyna’s story last month when she reluctantly turned to the Kiwi public to help her raise money for her sister Lidia Melnunchuk’s treatment. Diagnosed with lymphoma, Ms Melnunchuk is facing her sixth course of chemotherapy in Ukraine and, if it is successful, a course of 15 radiotherapy treatments will follow. Ms Tsalko is studying to be a vet nurse at Somerville Vet Centre. She met her friend Jessica Muehlauer, who is also training to be a vet nurse at the clinic, when they were both on a vet nursing extramural block course. Ms Muehlauer quickly adopted the Kiwi cando approach to help Ms Tsalko organise the garage sale, which was held outside the Somerville Vet Clinic in Howick on August 30. She put out the message on a social media network and the goods started pouring in – items such as prams, bibs, clothing and baby gear. Ms Muehlaur also phoned around to collect donated items for a pet hamper which was raffled at the garage sale. “We ended up raising $3016.

I can’t believe it, Ms Tsalko says. “I cried. I have no words to explain how thankful I am to be in this tough situation and surrounded by generous people like Jessica who collected all this stuff.” When the day arrived, staff at the vet clinic – vets and nurses on their day off – mustered to move all the goods into the clinic the night before and were back at 6am the next day to put it outside. It was raining and Ms Tsalko’s landlord erected a marquee. And then many of the vet clinic clients arrived with baking goods for the cake stall. “I am overwhelmed,” Ms Tsalko says. “I don’t believe it happened to me. I am so proud to have come to New Zealand. If I had been somewhere else, I may be in a different situation. “In Ukraine, they don’t do things like this.” Ms Tsalko has sent the

$ money to her sister which will cover the sixth round of chemotherapy. It’s hoped that no more chemotherapy will be needed and that Ms Melnunchuk will be able to start on the radiotherapy follow-up treatment. Ms Tsalko’s younger sister in Denmark has agreed to provide US$1000 ($1596) for a CT scan and another US$1000 for the radiotherapy. But if instead more chemotherapy is needed, Ms Muehlaur says she has other things up her sleeve for another fund-raiser. Ms Tsalko, who has already spent close to $20,000 on her sister’s treatment says, “Everyone has been amazing. I am impressed with how people can be so kind.”

His teammate Erika Whiteley, instantly corrects him saying, “It wasn’t a dead body, it was a dummy filled with sand we had to drag it. The dummy represents a dead body.” The fastest and fittest team of four Somerville Intermediate Year 8 students, Aiden Iqbal, Kaine Bradley, Isabella Widvey and Erika Whiteley have been declared the Auckland champions. They will be representing Auckland at the Blue Light national PCT Fear Factor in Wellington from November 13 to 15. New Zealand Blue Light is a registered charity and community policing youth program that, for over 30 years, has run programs and activities for young people in New Zealand. “There were around 24 schools competing at the Auckland championship held at the ASB school grounds and we won by a full 20 seconds which is a lot in real time,” says Aiden. Constable Heaven says the variety of challenges that test the mental and physical abilities of the students is the same as the ones that the police officers have to go through every two years. “A lot of times we find that kids of this age group are more agile and faster than us,” he laughs. The challenges that stress on teamwork and character building are a great opportunity for the students to take up policing as a career option at a later stage.

illy Loca of Va-VaVoom Productions promised a grand show and delivered just that. Held for the first time at the Uxbridge Creative Centre, BananaRama, the burlesque comedy was sold-out! The vaudeville-inspired show that was a study in the art of striptease had funny man Mark Scott cleverly string it together, making sure there was never a dull moment. A three-piece, live jazz band kept the fast-paced tempo of the evening that transported the audience back to a different era of vaudeville – a mixed bag of performing arts along with cabaret, singing and burlesque. Cheeky, stand-up comedy magician Logan Kitney had everyone fooled as a failed magician, until some pretty cool tricks left everyone openmouthed! Adding some more sizzle to vintage glamour was Fanciforia Foxglove’s Lucille Ball inspired act. In contrast, the svelte Lilly Loca, taking the persona of an awkward and geeky Gary, evoked a lot of laughter as did the big built Patty Hang, a natural on stage. Most of all, it was the dancing troupe from Lilly Loca’s Bambina Burlesque Academy that shimmied and seduced the audience with lots of oomph and sassy moves. The fun-loving audience had their eyes glued to the stage and were afraid to blink,

lest they miss a millisecond of the bodacious show, complete with feather fans, sultry glove removal, glitzy costumes, nipple tassels et al. A word with the Beachlands girl Miss Lilly Loca (aka Natalie Hugill), creator, producer, actress and principal teacher at the Bambina Burlesque Academy. What is the essence of a burlesque show? ■■ A burlesque derives from the Italian word “burlesco”, which means “to mock”. Burlesque is traditionally used to be a form of satirical performance, which dates back to the golden age of Greece. The striptease element only came into burlesque shows in the early 20th century, when the American style formed, incorporating “the tease” into their acts.

Are you worried about the moral police? ■■ Not really. I think it’s refreshing to push the boundaries with performing arts, and also of people’s preconceptions. Burlesque is a widely accepted form of entertainment nowadays and has been around for a very long time. What annoys me is when people make judgment when they don’t understand the history of what burlesque actually is. When I tell people that burlesque originally started off as a form of parody and was used by playwrights such as Aristophanes and Shakespeare, they get quite a shock! Was this your first show in Howick? ■■ My first time producing a show, yes. But certainly not my first performance! Back in my theatre days, I used to attend drama classes at Uxbridge. The first play I performed in was Oliver Twist when I was about eight years old.

A dead seal pup was found on Bucklands Beach on Monday morning, following reports of a number of sightings around East Auckland. Bucklands Beach local Jackie Miller spotted a dead faceless seal pup on the beach near Musick Point on Monday morning. After returning on Tuesday morning it had disappeared, Ms Miller suspecting it had been washed away by the tide. This wasn’t the first seal she has seen recently. Ms Miller, along with other locals who had stopped to watch, saw one swimming up the estuary a couple of weeks ago. However, she says it looked like a much bigger one and most likely not the pup she saw on Bucklands Beach. There have been numerous other seal sightings in recent months. In early August, two East Aucklanders spotted a seal pup while on a walk along Howick Beach. On September 3, two seals came ashore in Auckland, one of them a leopard seal on Kohimarama Beach and the other, a fur seal, turned up at Middlemore Hospital. The Department of Conservation has said although it is normal to see seals in and out of the water, it is unusual to see them in this area. Seal numbers in Auckland tend to increase in winter months and as mother seals often leave their pups alone while they find food, the pups can often find their way to shore.

The Howick and Eastern vehicles are among a fleet of 53 that will be introduced by the Super City’s main operators, including NZ Bus (23 buses) and Ritchies (15 buses). Each can carry more than 100 passengers compared with conventional buses that carry between 45 and 70 people. The Howick and Eastern buses will be manufactured

at Kiwi Bus Builders in Tauranga. New regulations have been introduced to allow the vehicles to operate on New Zealand roads. Double-deckers have already been pressed into service on the Northern Busway running between the North Shore and Central Auckland. Auckland Transport chairman Dr Lester Levy says an unprecedented increase in public transport patronage looks set to continue and the investment in the new fleet by the bus companies reinforces

that confidence. It’s one of the single biggest private investments in public transport infrastructure in Auckland ever. “There is only so much road widening we can do in some areas so we have to look at more innovative and different ways of using what is a limited space,” he says. “Double-deckers, along with increased frequency and reliability on buses and trains are a key to reducing the city’s number one problem, which is congestion.”

Elm Park School teacher Mehernaz Darukhanawalla and her daughter Persis are heading to Las Vegas. They are a part of the Greater Auckland Chorus (GAC) and are really excited about competing at the coveted Sweet Adelines International championship at the beginning of October. Sweet Adelines is one of the world’s largest singing organisations for women, boasting members from five continents. ANTHONY HOROWITZ is the latest writer in a list of luminaries to tackle a James Bond thriller and he makes the best job of it so far. I’ve enjoyed the offerings of Jefferey Deaver, Sebastian Faulks and William Boyd, but Horowitz’s style seems to be the closest to that of Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming. The fact that Horowitz had access to previously unpublished material written by Fleming no doubt helped him get the pace and the pitch right, and he has also featured one of the most infamous Bond girls, Pussy Galore, in Trigger Mortis. Pussy was last seen snogging Bond on a life raft, after escaping Goldfinger’s plane; now, she is ensconced in Bond’s flat, restless and ready to move on. Bond has been asked to drive in an infamous car race to protect a famous British driver from Russian sabotage.

SEPTEMBER means Father’s Day and the Rugby World Cup, so the Paper Plus bookshelves are heaving under the weight of biographies of current and former All Blacks. In the book, he says he knew he was going to be an All Black from the age of six and he is passionate about the black jersey. He had to work hard to get it and he values it. But in this entertaining memoir, nothing and nobody is sacred. Where is the vendor?

After purchasing a house with a 15-year warranty in Flat Bush a mere five months ago, the vendor seems to have disappeared under the radar. With the wooden floors bubbling on contact with water, I now have quite a bubbled ground floor! Steam mopping is a disaster and the vendor ignores all correspondence, albeit this fault being shown to her the day I moved in. With the prices of houses showing no signs of relaxing, it is nonchalantly attributed to the demands. It is however questionable as to whether this casual explanation is the opportunity property developers are seizing to blatantly hike their prices. A 300m2 house on a 400m2 section in Flat Bush sells for $ 1.3 million. Undeniably attractive homes for sure, but is this price justified? Surely the cost of the fittings or the labour will not consume the major slice of the price, especially as often inferior products or workmanship are used to complete the projects. After spending that much on a simple family home, it is no wonder one avoids

an expensive legal battle to seek rectification. However, it seems like this is the very reasoning the vendors hope for when the buyers are short-changed. Attractive promises are made prior to the sale to create a false sense of security which the vendor never plans to fulfil. I am not sure whether this is the modus operandi of all the vendors or just the one from whom I purchased. Neera Naidoo Flat Bush

Foreign ownership

A year ago, the amount of foreign ownership was put at two per cent. A year on with no sign of slow down in sales and, if you add the left out figures for Auckland (Nick Smith did not have this vital data), it would have to be around four per cent. When you consider half of New Zealand is uninhabitable and then add in Maori-owned land and national parks, you are left with only 40 per cent of New Zealand being habitable and productive. Now simple maths tells you four per cent of 40 per cent is 10 per cent, the realistic figure for the amount of productive land

in foreign ownership. In most countries that would be disgraceful. When you hear that in China they have whole schools dedicated to teaching students how to buy and sell real estate in New Zealand, the Government’s betrayal becomes clear. If I was a National Party politician, the above-mentioned would not be something I would be particularly proud of. Gary Hollis Howick

I strongly support the letter you published by John Champion (Times, August 27) in everything he states. I have lived through many amalgamations of local bodies, all of which are purported to be to our advantage. I have yet to see the good bits! Bigger has not always been seen to be better, and sooner the council and staff will wake up to the fact that many residents do not want to march to the drum they are playing. Is this national flag debate a diversion? I don't think in the final analysis the flag issue will be about the flag. Those with intelligence will be aware of the irresponsible way the taxpayer money was wasted in not having a simple yes/no referendum early on which could have saved the taxpayer the $28 million in costs and a further $20m or so probably more in its implementation (conveniently left out of the first estimate). The silent majority might see through the beefed up media campaign and might rightly or wrongly see the whole exercise as a diversion from the disgraceful sell-off of some of our most habitable and productive land to foreigners, Auckland’s housing bubble, and even - heaven forbid - as one individual’s ego trip. centage, and in dollars charged in the last five years against inflation percentage. This is a true measure, not just using the “fair” word to cover all the excesses of council spending. We notice that there are no reports which show the reduction in the number of employees which should have occurred with the amalgamation of all the cities. Until the council shows employee numbers reports comparison in their annual accounts they are continuing to hide their inefficiency. The government auditor should be ashamed to sign such an annual report which does not have vital ratepayer information available to it’s ratepayers. Both these items are needed NOW. Newmarket the key

Now is the time to make Newmarket the junction for the south and west lines, and run a continuous rail shuttle service between Newmarket and Britomart. Even if they go ahead with the CRL it will ease the present situation and cost the ratepayers nothing as the platforms and tracks are already in place. The CRL is years

More than a just a dog

Many dog/animal lovers will mourn the euthanasia of Karma. Animal “people” know that cruelty and death is part of nature, but should not be so from human to animal. Arriving in New Zealand from October, the new Ford Focus marks an evolution of the Focus nameplate, and introduces new and improved safety and driver assistance technologies. The Focus is also more economical, while maintaining the fun-to-drive Ford DNA. For added confidence, new Focus features Enhanced Transitional Stability, an industry-first technology that can predict when a car might skid, and steps in early to potentially prevent a loss of control. Revised front and rear styling incorporates displays a bold face of Ford with a new level of sophistication. A lower, wider stance that emphasizes width, and a new bonnet that sweeps elegantly toward the signature trapezoidal grille give the car a bolder, more muscular presence on the road. A sleek new rear fascia and tailgate features thinner taillights and a sculpted rear spoiler to enhance aerodynamics. Ford designers paid particular attention to customer feedback on the current generation Focus interior, which called for a simpler, more intuitive layout with fewer controls and switches. • ¼ large cabbage, washed and diced finely • 2 apples • 3 eggs • 1-2 packets Hellers meatballs • 2 potatoes, washed • 50g creamy blue cheese • 1 capsicum, sliced • 100ml Newman’s Own creamy Caesar dressing • 2 tbs Fragata capers (optional)

To make the fritter mix put the diced cabbage into a bowl. Grate 2 apples and add to the cabbage. Add the eggs, 1 heaped tbs of flour and ½ tsp baking powder and mix together. Next grate the potato and add to the fritter mixture. Season. Put 2 fry pans onto medium heat with just a little oil. Into one pan cook the meatballs. Halfway through the cooking time add the capsicum. Into the other pan add spoonfuls of the fritter mix. Cook one side till browned then flip over. You may need to cook a couple of batches. As each batch cooks remove from the pan and keep warm. When the meatballs are cooked remove any excess oil/fat from the pan with a paper towel and mix through 50-100ml of the caesar dressing (and the capers if using). Divide the fritters onto each plate, crumble with blue cheese and then add the meatballs.

eoff and Janet Philson have lived in their 1940s Kiwi bungalow for 24 years, and half of that time has been devoted to a stunning spruce-up. The dramatic transformation from a post World War II three-bedroom Huntly and clinker brick family dwelling to a 2015 plaster on brick and block five-bedroom entertainment dream has been a 12-year labour of love for the Philsons and their three children. And they’ve been rewarded with gold in the Builders Own Home category of the 2015 Auckland Registered Master Builders House of the Year. It hasn’t always been a straight-forward journey. When the GFC (global financial crisis) hit in 2007/2008, progress ground to a halt, leaving the family spending six years living in a partially finished home renovation. Bathroom hardware selected early in the piece lay in wait for 10 years before there was anywhere to install it. Then the family room, fitted with sink, cooking ring and a barbecue outside the door became home for six months, while the living areas at the other end of the house were completed. The nice thing is that the

2015 finished product in Point View Drive, semi-rural Howick, remains a true, albeit swept-up version of the original. A small extension at the front includes an entrance lobby and an office for Geoff, who is a director of Finesse Residential in Howick. It provides easy access for clients and opens onto a deck for outdoor business conversations. Two of the original bedrooms have been knocked into one guest room off the lobby, equipped with a bathroom and a powder room off the original hallway. The living room, complete with corner picture window,

is in the same place. It’s been incorporated into an open plan dining area, which used to be a tacked-on sunroom. Everything leads in turn to the kitchen, still where it always was but extending much further. Janet wanted a timber finish for the kitchen so that it blended seamlessly with the living area. It’s been achieved by devoting the living room end of the kitchen central island unit to Geoff’s bar, where he can dispense drinks. Opposite is a built-in unit, including a melteca top for pouring beverages, a place for glasses, a drawer for the best cutlery, “the crystal

cupboard” Janet calls it. And a folding door closes it all off. Clever use has been made of the kickboards under the cooking station bench with shallow drawers ideal for storing platters, and a special drawer is devoted to herbs and spices. “We like to have family occasions and entertain guests,” Janet says, “so I don’t have to pull stuff out from the back of cupboards. Because they’re easy to get at, we use more of our things.” At the other end of the kitchen is a mini scullery, which can be closed off with doors. It’s for breakfast and other prep ingredients and utensils, “everyday stuff that is probably not that attractive,” Janet says, while Geoff adds that incorporating the kitchen into the living space means it needs to be kept tidier. “This area is for stuff that works but not the greatest to look at,” Janet says, “for example, Geoff’s grandmother’s ancient Kenwood mixer that is ugly, but it works.” Around the front of the central island is more cupboard storage for the bone china and ‘good’ dinner sets. The laundry in the original house was in the bathroom and Janet says she found

it handy because it was near the kitchen. So the new laundry is also just off the kitchen and doubles as a scullery with a second pantry for bulky stuff and bench space useful for food platters when the Philsons are entertaining – a functional laundry with more than one use. The corridor room at the far end of the kitchen has been turned into a gallery using 70s dividing unit principles. “We enjoy our books and it is lovely to be able to have them on bookshelves at last to enjoy,” Janet says, and this area is perfect for bookshelves. Also incorporated into the builtin wall unit is a mini office space with computer desk, which can be closed off by doors. Geoff wanted to make the interface between the house and deck off the living areas more “barefoot friendly”, so he conducted a successful search finding a fabricator that made a door track sitting flush with the decking. An eight-metre bank of doors slide back on each other so that a five-metre gap can be created in the centre or at each end. Depending on where the breeze is coming from, one end can be left closed. It was a challenge to link the house, physically and visually with the swimming pool three-and-ahalf metres below. The answer is a dramatic sweep of sandstone steps descending in stages down the slope to the lawn and into the pool area.

The brand-new extension includes bedrooms, a master and two others upstairs, and a fourth bedroom downstairs next to a family entertainment room. Another bathroom servicing the downstairs bedroom also doubles for guests using the pool. The master bedroom sits at the extreme corner of the house to the living room, also with a corner set of doors and windows looking across the Mangemangeroa Valley to Shelly Park and Coromandel in the distance. A delightful feature of the master bedroom is the en suite, including a ‘shower with a view’. A large square window is threequarters frosted for privacy, but affording the same magnificent view across the valley. Tucked around the corner from the swimming pool and family room is a spa pool, “nice and private, and looking to the east away from the city, is lovely at night,” Geoff says. The footings and base of the original house have also yielded a treasure trove of storage areas and new rooms. One bonus room doubles as a comfortable place for fitness gear and a cool nook for storing wine. An old rumpus room, originally with no internal access, has been turned into a workshop leading onto the garage. “The cars were parked outside for 10 years,” Geoff and Janet say. “We got them back inside four months ago – what a luxury.”

he Olympic qualification of a men and women’s eight would have warmed the cockles of the late Don Rowlands heart, a champion rower himself and one of New Zealand’s finest sporting administrators. The sight of the men’s golden eight standing on the podium with tears in their eyes as the God Defend New Zealand national anthem was played at the 1972 Munich Olympics, remains one of my fondest sporting memories. It was the first time that anthem was played at an Olympic Games. Before that, ours was the same as Great Britain’s God Save The Queen. For the best part of a decade starting with success at the 1967 worlds and the gold medal won by the coxless four at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Oamaru builder ‘Rusty’ Robertson was New Zealand rowing’s master coach. That legacy has continued through to Steve Tonks and an outstanding coaching team that in France qualified nine of a possible 14 boats for next year’s Rio Olympics. It would have been 11 had world champion lightweight single scullers Zoe McBride and Adam Ling had an Olympic event to contest. As it is the remarkable McBride will make her bid for the lightweight double sculls, an event Julia Edward and Sophie MacKenzie

have won for the past two years. At 19 years of age and weighing just 61kg, McBride looks set for a magnificent international career and already holds the world record for the single sculls. With five gold, three silver and one bronze medal won at these championships the Kiwis can look forward to Rio with confidence following their outstanding effort at the 2012 London Olympics. Not only did my wife Sharron and I experience a plane, a train and an automobile on the first day of a recent Melbourne holiday, we threw in two bus trips for good measure. The first bus ride was from Park & Ride to Auckland Airport, the second from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross train station in Melbourne’s city centre. Both bus trips were effortless and trouble-free, a far cry from the one we experienced in Samoa last year. We took a tourist type trip into Apia for a day. The bus left at 9.30am, full of couples and parents with young kids. It was bad enough that the young Samoan driver was constantly texting, but what happened next was downright scary. He fell asleep at the wheel. The bus veered left off the road and on to the gravel shoulder. He woke up with a start, overcorrected and swerved on to the wrong side of the road. Fortunately, nothing was coming the other way. The driver shook himself and carried on, but mate Mike and I saw that his eye-

Obviously he didn’t because the same thing happened on the way home. I sat on the dashboard opposite the driver, making conversation to keep him awake. He spoke little English, we had nothing in common, and my desire to punch him in the head and take the wheel made it a very long and stressful trip back. Our Melbourne holiday was a lot less hazardous, unless you consider the cost of eating out to be life-threatening. If it was, Sharron and I would never have made it out alive.

TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Pakuranga teams make school history

Pakuranga College brought home not one trophy, but two from this year’s tournament week. The school’s 1st XI Boys Hockey claimed the Founders Cup in the first tournament hockey victory in Pakuranga College history. Up against a strong Hillcrest High School 1st XI, the boys took the early advantage and added another before the break. With a 2-0 lead, Pakuranga never looked in trouble. A second half goal by Hillcrest increased the intensity but there was no comeback. It was a hard-fought win, backed up by great performances throughout the week. The final score was 2-1, with goals scored by Sam Kinley and Stuart Pearson. The win ensures the school’s promotion to the Rankin/ India Premier Tournament for 2016. The 1st XI boys football team also won their tournament in a very tight game against Canterbury’s Lincoln College. Pakuranga took the lead in the last five minutes of the game, thanks to goals from Dale Phillips and David Hough. Pakuranga College sports director Clive Daniels commented, “It was a great end to the career of the Year 13 boys and a sign to show that these lads are family on and off the pitch. Congratulations boys! You did yourselves and the school proud.” With these great results and a brand-new $4 million gymnasium due for completion in 2016, Pakuranga College is rapidly making a reputation for itself as a school with a strong focus on sport.

Zane takes out AIMS Games cross-country Z

ane Powell is the king of age-group cross country. The 12-year old now has a winner’s medal from the NZCT AIMS Games to go with wins at the New Zealand and North Island championships. The Somerville Intermediate School student beat 129 other runners in the 3km event to claim the Year 7 title at the annual intermediate schools tournament in Tauranga on Sunday. “I thought I went pretty well,” Powell said. “I’ve been training throughout the whole season.” Going into the 1km mark, Powell was challenged by Tauranga Intermediate School competitor Corban Crowther. Powell said he had to push really hard to shake Crowther off. “I had to keep trying and not let him pass me,” Powell said. Tested for most of the race, Powell put some space between himself and his

onds behind Powell to claim second, and George Lambert of Hunterville Consolidated School finished 11 seconds behind in third place. Powell, who trains at the Pakuranga Athletic Club, takes his third winner’s medal in as many months. He won the B12 grade 2km race at the North Island Champs in July, and the under-13 boys’ 2km race at the New Zealand Champs in August. Powell’s mother Kim said, he’s had a good season. “He just wanted to finish it off today.” Somerville Intermediate School was also represented by Bodhi Driver and Joshua Brown in the Year 7 boys’ race, who finished 19th and 21st respectively. The AIMS Games is a week-long tournament featuring 19 different sports. This year‘s event sees the biggest turnout in its history with over 8000 athletes from 248 different schools signed up to compete.
