undreds of grief-stricken friends and family of a popular young man paid tribute to him at his funeral yesterday. The funeral of Pakuranga College student Josh Martin (or O’Hanlon) held at St Columba Presbyterian Church in Botany saw everyone from infants to the elderly fill a packed auditorium with many left standing. Josh was just two months shy of his 18th birthday when he died last Thursday. Photos and tributes portrayed a talented, go-getting youth who

loved sports, the sea and the outdoors, had a sense of humour and was well-respected by his peers. He was a Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts member and cub leader as well as a founding member and captain of the Tamaki Lightning American Football Club. He played the tuba in the Pakuranga Concert Band, members of which were present at the service to perform Amazing Grace. The service was led by Josh’s scout leader Keith Nisbet who aimed to capture some of the “diversity” of Josh’s multi-faceted life. “Josh grabbed hold of life for what it was worth and he would want us to do the same,” Mr Nisbet said. Friend Nathan Wilson said Josh was a special person. “Whether it was the glint in his eye or his fantastic hair, he was one of those people who only came along once in a while.” Josh was confidently ambitious, loyal, warm and sincere and while he was a dreamer he had the ability to achieve his goals, said Nathan.

Josh brought everyone joy, said Nathan. “We know as Josh always said ‘our best days are ahead of us’ but with Josh’s passing, some very fine days are behind us, and that is worth our tears.” A founder of the Pakuranga College Young CEOs, Josh was actively involved in the school’s Young Enterprise Scheme. A keen hunter and fisher, Josh became a scout at the age of six. The scouts attended in uniform and representative Colin Horgan said he was an eager adventurer. “As a scout he sucked the soul out of our leaders for knowledge.” Mr Horgan then presented the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary silver award posthumously. Josh’s high school sweetheart Jade de Vries said he was her soulmate. “I couldn’t have asked anything more in a partner. He was my best friend. “He brought out the best in us all. His potential and energy was unmissable in everyone that we met.” Mother Clare White extended her “best wishes and best

thoughts” to the other family involved in the crash and a family spokesperson said there is no blame associated with the incident. Ms White described how excited Josh had been last week and had sent a text to Jade saying: “I’ve always loved you and now I am ready to follow you until the end of my time.” Ms White later added: “Your life has been bloody hard but it has also been bloody wonderful.” The service concluded with the song You Are My Sunshine, a song Josh would ask his mother and Jade to sing to him when he couldn’t sleep.

atch out, Jamie McDell – a local lass has released a new album and the charts are singing her praises. Accomplished equestrian and musician Kendall Lee, 22, has finally realised her dream of producing her own album after a year-anda-half of blood, sweat and tears. The singer-songwriter’s album entitled Black & White was recorded and produced at Qualified Sound Studio in Whitford. All four songs on the album are original, and include the single Tip Jar which was released last year. Produced by Gary Jackson who also plays bass and accompanied by Paul Lawrence on the keyboard, the album also features the drumming talents of Ken-

dall’s father, Graeme Scott, who was part of the Auckland music scene in bands such as Rated X and Satellite Spies. Kendall, who sings and plays guitar, says it’s been a traumatic year. “I had to have surgery on my throat and the recovery was six to eight weeks. I was in and out of hospital for one to two weeks more because my tonsils bled and I couldn’t eat or swallow anything.” At the time, she was also studying to become a primary school teacher and had to put her studies on hold at the University of Auckland, resulting in further drama when her exam results were not accepted on compassionate grounds. That’s when the former Botany Downs Secondary College student decided to put her head down and “go all out” with the music.

Describing the album as a mix of pop country and pop rock, Kendall says jokingly that the album was initially inspired by “boys being not very nice”. Inspiration was also drawn waitressing at Celsius Gastrobar in Botany Junction. “It was a really quiet day and I had my waitressing notepad in hand so I started writing.” The title track Black & White addresses the issue of religious beliefs which Kendall says has been a dilemma. “It’s a very honest song. It’s about me. If people who

know me listen to it they’ll go ‘oh [that’s Kendall]’.” Kendall has had to fork out $11,000 to produce the CD and is in the midst of saving up for new music equipment so she can start performing with the aim to tour the country. Pakuranga College students cope with grief

Many tributes flow for Josh

The deadly crash last week on Pakuranga highway that killed Josh Martin has left the students and staff of Pakuranga College in a state of shock. The school’s principal Michael Williams shared his thoughts

rincipal Michael Williams pays tribute to the 17-year-old: “Josh was very focussed and took all the opportunities that the college could offer. We often advise students when they join the college to be involved in all the activities and Josh did just that. “He was a house leader, part of the peer support group, concert band for five years, hockey team and the Wakarama as well as the business studies group. Josh was extremely popular, well connected and in a very good space.” Josh knew so many layers of people. Talking about the traumatic time that the college is going following the tragedy, Mr Williams says that even the teachers who have seen him grow up from a child to an adult in those five years were finding it hard to cope. “Mistakes happen,” he says solemnly. “One of the dan-

gers is that people look for someone to blame and blame doesn’t help. “There are so many different versions of the eyewitness accounts. It could be fate, an accident. “What we need to do is acknowledge it and ensure it

doesn’t happen again. There is no point in second-guessing the tragic circumstances which causes a lot of angst. Let the authorities do their job.” Even in the face of the tragedy, Mr Williams is touched by the unstinted support from the local school principals and businesses. “We have been inundated with flowers and messages and morning tea for the staff. I am really thankful for the support we have got from the neighbouring schools, businesses and the community.” Sadly, the terrible incident happened on the day the Post Primary Teachers’ Association of Secondary Schools were scheduled to have their paid union meeting. It was the fateful day when students from all secondary schools were dismissed at 12.30pm though a lot of students did stay back in school to work with teachers who were not part of the union. The shocking news reached Mr Williams when he was

mid-air, flying to Wellington for a meeting. He spent the next couple of hours going through the various processes as the deputy principals and staff members stepped up beyond the call of duty. “They were absolutely outstanding,” he says. “We went through the traumatic incident response plan, a document which you hope you never have to use. “That apart with the changing world of social media we had to be very responsive and use it as a tool to reach out to the community and the school parents.” Right now the biggest challenge the school faces is the NCEA exams which is just three weeks away. “Coping with the different stages of grieving, the college is giving counselling support as well as trying to delicately balance the grieving process with carrying on with what they have to do to pass the exams. I am sure even Josh would have wanted just that.”

The event was sparked by one of the church’s mothers who was new to the area and asked what people did around the Halloween tradition of trick or treating. She wasn’t sure it was safe and was looking for a good alternative, Brett Jones, chairman of the trust says. The Carboot Party was born out of the desire to have a fun but safe Halloween event that included trick or treating. Families from the “three day-a-week” playgroup and Cession Community Church, along with local businesses and charities, are currently getting involved by decorating their carboots to a non-

castle and sausage sizzling over an open fire. This year the Howick Local Board is supporting the event, Mr Jones says, providing community funding. Local businesses are also onboard. Nicola Upson of Dabble-do Crafts is taking up the challenge to decorate the business Mini car. “It’s such a great idea and based on last year’s turnout this event will continue to grow in 2015,” she says. “Dabble-do is thrilled to be supporting it.”

Annual community party More than 1000 children and their caregivers took advantage of a safe alternative to ‘trick or treating’ on Halloween last year and the opportunity is being offered again this month. Howick’s C3 Church is running another Glow Party on October 31 where fun, games and food will be provided for the family. Inside activities for the kids include a Minion Maze Room, Pitch Black Room, carnival games and disco with face painting, candyfloss and a goodie bag for each child. A teen and two young men have appeared in court facing charges related to a burglary in Howick. Police pursued a 17-year-old boy and two men, aged 22 and 23 following an alleged burglary in Cook Street, Howick last Tuesday. They were arrested and charged with burglary, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

ineteen existing alcohol bans will be retained in Howick Ward because they meet new higher statutory thresholds. But 167 bans will lapse. The Howick Local Board’s decision comes in the wake of a review of existing bans required by legislation. The board’s deputy chair, Adele White says given the evidence provided, the board has been able to keep some crucial alcohol bans in place and strike a sensible overall balance. “We thank the local community and police who worked with us to collect important

evidence of alcohol-related harm in our public places,” she says. Because submissions to the board’s hearings provided sufficient evidence of alcoholrelated crime or disorder, the ban areas at Bucklands Beach and Cockle Bay have been extended. Also 13 existing alcohol ban areas, including five children’s playgrounds, five public reserve car parks and three skate parks, have been subsumed into eight larger alcohol ban areas. They are on Barry Curtis, Blundell, Earnslaw, and Lloyd Elsmore active and passive parks; Bucklands Beach Hall

grounds; Howick and William Green Domains; and McCahill Views Reserve. The 19 bans retained are: Barry Curtis, Blundell, Lloyd Elsmore, Meadowland, and Earnslaw Parks; Bowscale Place Reserve Walkway and Tarnica Park; Bucklands, Eastern and Howick Beaches; Cascades Walkway; Cockle and Mellons Bays; Falstaff Place and Reserve; McCahill Views and Bleakhouse Reserves; Howick Village Town Centre; Marine Parade; William Green and Howick Domains. The bans will be operational 24 hours a day with the exception of Earnslaw Park and Howick Domain where the

Theresa Liebenberg, the Blind Foundation’s community fundraising executive visited Howick, with retired guide dog Frayser, to accept a $3300 cheque raised by the 45-strong local group. “Often we just see the money side of things,” Ms Liebenberg said. “As community fundraisers

we have to inspire people to donate. “I am in awe. “You are inspired and you inspire people.” The Howick Freemasons have been making donations to the Foundation’s puppy training scheme for several years, Lodge Howick almoner, Noel Ryan says. This year’s donation was assisted by the Howick Freemasons Charitable Trust and the Freemasons Charity which is the national charitable arm of Freemasons New Zealand.

Ms White says the board still has the authority to create new alcohol ban areas after October 31 but under current alcohol legislation needs strong proof showing they are necessary. “Reporting any alcoholrelated crime and disorder in a local park can help provide proof that an alcohol ban should be in place.” Alcohol bans prohibit the consumption of alcohol in public places and are enforced by the New Zealand Police using powers of search, seizure and arrest. Penalties include an infringement fee of $250. The Grand Lodge of New Zealand is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. Given that the Blind Foundation is also 125 years old this year, it chose the Foundation as the recipient of a national appeal to all its members and Lodges. An appeal to Freemasons Lodges nationally during the anniversary year has provided funding for 125 ‘Daisy’ disc players. The players are borrowed from the Blind Foundation which operates a national library of recorded books. Matthew was promoted to assistant dealer principal aged 25 and later seized the opportunity to buy into the business and partner with owner Andrew Simms. The result of their partnership is the Andrew Simms Experience Centre in Botany’s Te Irirangi Drive launched in 2013. Mammogram might be the life-changing difference This October, Breast Cancer Month, an emotional campaign by the NZ Breast Foundation will remind women that finding cancer early, through a mammogram, might mean the difference between relief and despair. The campaign is backed by new data showing significantly greater breast cancer survival for women within the free screening age group (45-69) when their tumour is found on a mammogram. Of women aged 45-69 whose cancer was found on a screening mammogram, 94 per cent were alive five years after diagnosis, and 86 per cent 10 years after diagnosis. For those women who found their cancer through a lump or other symptom, fiveyear survival was 80 per cent and 10-year survival just 68 per cent.

Bronwyn Rogerson never expected the call that came in May 2014, telling her that her mammogram looked suspicious. “This is the first time we’ve been able to analyse the survival numbers for the screening age group, and with 12 years of data now available, we think this information is highly significant,” said Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. “We sometimes hear people say, ‘Everyone

knows about mammograms.’ But the fact is 30 per cent of eligible women aren’t enrolled with the free screening programme, and every year another 30,000 women turn 45. So our message this October is, get your mammogram – do it for yourself, and for your family. Relief is so much better than despair.” The Despair or relief? campaign in print and on television features four women who have either had breast cancer, or been close to someone who has. Bronwyn Rogerson, of Tuakau, is one of them. She and her two sisters turned their regular mammograms into a special family ritual, after their mum had breast cancer. But Bronwyn says she never expected the call that came in May 2014, telling her that her mammogram looked suspicious.

hat would a social media sensation with more than 10 million Facebook likes and almost 1.4 million YouTube subscribers be doing visiting Botany Town Centre? After the Napier schoolgirl began posting goofy videos of herself from her bedroom in 2012, Jamie Curry’s Facebook page Jamie’s World blew up overnight. Jamie’s natural yet unique humour struck a chord with viewers all over the world and her Facebook and YouTube sights have since attracted an enormous global audience, reaching more than 60 million total views. This week Jamie is releasing her first book Jamie’s World: They let me write a book and will meet fans at Whitcoulls, Botany Town Centre on Monday. otany MP Jami-Lee Ross is strongly against a proposal by Auckland Grey Power to ban full superannuation – or pension payments – to people who have not lived in New Zealand for the past 40 years. Auckland Grey Power, a lobby group promoting the welfare and well-being of citizens in the 50+ age group, said it would take a remit from all seven Auckland Grey Power associations to the Grey Power Federation annual meeting to be considered by all the country’s associations. Arthur Moore, president of Grey Power Howick Pakuranga and Districts, told the Times that the remit reads: “That people over the age of 65 who have not resided in New Zealand for the past 40 years should not get full universal superannuation”. The remit explains that there is “talk” that superannuation to over-65s can’t be maintained and there is a need to raise eligibility to 67. “This imposes on those who have lived and worked here all their lives, a wait of 50 years or more of paying taxes before they are eligible,” the explanation says. “On the other hand, people from other countries can arrive here and, after 10 years, be eligible for superannuation having contributed nothing. What has happened to user pays?” It recognised, however, that

there would be exceptions like people who brought superannuation with them from the UK and other countries, and Kiwis returning from abroad. “The object of the remit is to prevent depletion of the superannuation fund by elderly immigrants who have not contributed to the New Zealand tax system,” it says. However, Mr Ross says the present arrangements for NZ superannuation are sustainable and costs for the foreseeable future have been budgeted for. “New Zealand’s current super costs are quite low at less than five per cent of GDP compared with the over nine

per cent average across the OECD,” he says. The Greypower Zone 2 (Auckland) remit is inconsistent with the New Zealand Superannuation principles of fairness and simplicity, says Mr Ross, and would disadvantage a large number of New Zealanders. “The remit would mean people who migrated to New Zealand after the age of 25 would never be entitled to full New Zealand Superannuation as they cannot accrue the required 40 years New Zealand residence prior to the age of 65,” Mr Ross says. “Likewise, New Zealanders that have resided offshore for a period of time and have not accrued 40 years’ residence in New Zealand would be disadvantaged.” The Prime Minister has promised that the National Party will maintain the married rate of superannuation at 66 per cent of the average wage. “On our watch, the age of eligibility will remain at 65,” Mr Ross says. “Migrants appear to be a target of the remit. “It is important to remember that migrants to this country, for the most part, are bringing much needed skills or capital, or they are marrying a New Zealander. “The current 10-year rule requires migrants to have demonstrated commitment to New Zealand before they are entitled to receive New Zealand Superannuation.”

Unwanted visitors Broomfields residents are worried about the proliferation of pests. MARIANNE KELLY takes a look at the problem in this second of a two-part series.

llan Riley, the chairman of Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM), has raised the issue with the council because of concerns about increased numbers of animal pests in the valley. “Possum damage is now obvious on ‘gourmet’ possum feed sources, like Carmine Rata vines. Howick Local Board (HLB) chairman David Collings says the pests are an issue for the HLB side of the Mangemangeroa Valley. The Whitford side is part of the Franklin Ward. “As Allan rightly points out, native species are being consumed and it is an issue for both boards. We [HLB] are trying to identify if what we are doing is enough.” However, he says, the council’s parks officers have advised that the board’s pest control programme included in the ecological restoration contract for Mangemangeroa Reserve is working. They say there is only funding to provide an agreed level of service in some of the parks and reserves. “In order to have total control of pest numbers we would need to create sanctuaries and these would require high levels of funding.” However, Mr Collings agrees that as the pest numbers increase in areas adjoining the reserve the question, when do the numbers of pests become a civic responsibility, must be asked. Auckland Council officers Biran Singh and Garrick McCarthy say the council’s biosecurity team can offer advice to private property owners about control, or the residents can contact commercial pest control companies. “Auckland Council will respond to all queries,” they say, “but it is not always possible to visit all householders who are having problems.” Franklin Local Board (FLB) chairman Andrew Baker says a biosecurity team at Auckland Council can offer some advice but he’s not aware of council parks staff visiting private property.

The contracted control of pests at present, he says, is only undertaken in council-owned ecological priority parks and reserves because of budget

constraints. “The owners of private properties need to undertake pest control themselves.” The number of pests on private rural and urban properties would only become a civic responsibility when the council or Government determined under the Regional Pest Strategy or Biosecurity Act that the pest needs to be contained, he says. “Again, private landowners have a responsibility to take steps to control pests on their properties.” Mr Singh and Mr McCarthy say there are many projects and initiatives that the council does in the pro-active space throughout the region, but it is difficult to predict where there will be an increase in pest densities. Mr Baker says he is happy to talk to the Howick Local Board if there is a real problem on the Broomfield Peninsula. “But with our area being so large and with the massive rural-urban interface in Franklin, we have to prioritise where we deal with things like this and it does not appear to have been raised as a priority by anyone there.”

Pest plan under review A review of the Super City’s Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP) is underway. The plan guides Auckland’s management of the plants, animals and diseases that adversely affect the environment, economy and health. Controlling them has benefits for native plants, animals and ecosystems. Auckland Council is seeking informal feedback to gauge community expectations and raise awareness of pest controls, plant pests and marine biosecurity. Councillor George Wood, who chairs and Regional Strategy and

Policy Committee, says the review is an ideal opportunity for Aucklanders to have their say over the future of pest management in the region. Specific topics up for discussion are: Bangalow palms; widespread weeds including moth plant and privet; red-eared slider turtles; feral goats; marine pest management in the Hauraki Gulf; the future of community pest control. his migration to the north is something that he has been doing annually for the last decade, leaving the winter behind and travelling to the high Arctic. Aaron’s role aboard the ship is leading and co-ordinating the voyage. He reports on his experiences in the Arctic during July and August 2015 while travelling aboard Le Boreal: “This past winter I headed north on two separate occasions to join expedition voyages in the Arctic; the first was in July to explore Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland. The expedition started with a private charter flight directly from Oslo to the only airport in Svalbard, Longyearbyn. “We spent the next four days immersed in all that Svalbard has to offer. Using the ships’ zodiacs we made twice daily excursions. On two occasions we used the zodiacs to cruise through the ice. Being close to the water offered an entirely new perspective on the size and scale of the glaciers flowing into the sea such as at Monaco Breen where we found amazing blue icebergs bobbing around in the water as the glacier behind continued to calve with a thunderous roar. “Venturing on land at Alkehornet we found reindeer grazing on the lush green mosses and small plants that survive in the Arctic. Completely unafraid of people, they wandered amongst the group quite unconcerned as the cameras clicked away. “At Poolepynten we quietly approached a group of walrus hauled out on the very end of the sandy spit of land. All clustered together they allowed us to get some great views. “Possibly the most exciting event on the expedition was when we ventured northwards into the Arctic Pack ice. Less than 600 miles from the North Pole the entire ocean surface was covered with

ice as we searched for Polar Bears. Navigating through the ice all were welcome to the bridge to watch the Captain and officers at work. “Then just when people were thinking we wouldn’t find a Polar Bear one appeared close to the ship having just climbed out on the ice. We were able to watch from the bow of the ship as the bear approached and investigated this large and colourful object that had appeared in its world (our ship). “Over the course of nearly an hour we were treated to some great views as the inquisitive bear explored and played about on the ice right in front of the ship! “Next stop was Greenland which took a couple of days sailing, giving a chance to recover from the activity and adventures of Svalbard.

Arriving off the coast of East Greenland the first thing that strikes you is the sheer size and scale of the landscape. “Along the shores of which we regularly spotted the shaggy brown coasted Musk Ox grazing and Arctic Hares, sitting perfectly still but standing out in their white coats against the golden brown landscape. “In Scoresby Sund, which happens to be the largest fjord system in the world, we visited the small community of Ittoqqortoormiit – where 300 people live year round with a relatively traditional lifestyle where hunting is a large feature! “Up next was Iceland where the first port of call was the island of Grimsey where there is a small fishing port and thousands of puffins. Our next stop was Husavik, home to a renowned

whaling museum and a base for exploring the hinterland of northern Iceland. “We had the opportunity to venture to Lake Mývatn, the spectacular waterfall at Godafoss and geothermal wonderland at Hevrir. “Our last stop before Reykavik was Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with spectacular coastal scenery and towering glaciated volcanic peaks. In just under two weeks we had three very different island archipelagos and viewed a great diversity of the wildlife that calls these remote shores home! “I returned to the Arctic again in late August for a voyage through the NW Passage sailing from Greenland to Alaska across the top of the North America, an epic journey in the footsteps of the early explorers. But more about that another time!”

Spring on the weekend! Safe as houses Labour Weekend and the beginning of the summer weather is often a time for tackling a gardening or renovation project, firing up the barbeque, doing a ‘spring’ clean or filling up the pool or spa.

The excitement is in the air – whether it’s sampling farmers’ markets, camping and hiking in the wilderness or going out on the boat and relaxing at the beach, this Labour Weekend is traditionally the first taste Kiwis have of summer.

➢➢ To headboard or not to headboard? Headboards can be easily created by painting a box on the wall to create the illusion of one, so if a bed doesn’t come with one, it can still be easily added on after. Alternatively, to make a style statement use a bookcase as a headboard – reaching for night time reading has never been easier.

But wait, what about decor? And while most people tend to pay more attention to the living, outdoor and visitor areas, the bedroom tends to be neglected. In fact, it should be the most important place for summer revellers to rest and recharge for the next adventure.

➢➢ High or low? If young children are in the equation, try going lower to reduce the risk of them falling from a great height. Low beds also tend to lend a unique aesthetic to rooms. However, those with back problems should definitely opt for a higher bed, plus the view tends to be better.

So, if a new bed is on the cards whether for the master bedroom, the teenagers or visitors, consider the following first: ➢➢ Wanting to declutter? Choose a storage bed and free up some space for summer essentials and clothing such as sunnies, hats, sunscreen, kaftans, beach towels and mosquito repellent.

➢➢ Heavy or light, thick or thin mattress? Pillow top mattresses tend to be heavier but they aren’t suitable for the very petite who don’t weigh enough to compress the foam. Heavier people need extra support and thickness which usually results in a heavy mattress. On the flipside, light

Vector shareholdings

Yes, Mr John Collinge has got it wrong but let us not forget it was he who let us know that Vector was going to be sold off 100 per cent. This was why only 25 per cent was sold and the other 75 per cent is still owned by the people of Auckland. Instead of having a yearly dividend (of $345), we could have a monthly reduction of about $28.75. After all, you are only getting your own money back after being overcharged. We used to have cheap electricity but in 1992, the then government had to find goodpaying jobs “for the boys” retiring from Parliament. So this is why the ‘lines’ and ‘power’ were split apart, making electricity more expensive (in my opinion). R Dickinson Howick

Chained dog’s condition is very poor

Re: It’s a dog’s life, (Times, October 15). Hello Natalie, thank you for writing this story up. I have walked this dog twice as a volunteer for Chained Dog Awareness NZ (CDANZ) and can tell you her condition is very poor. This poor girl has trouble walking after a half hour and has not been walked every day, as a neighbour claims. Another neighbour will tell you of the 17 months they have had her, they walked her only for the first six months. The remaining 11 months has seen her chained to this tree. Also please tell Christine, CDANZ needs volunteer walkers. Sometimes a knock on the owner’s door with an offer of walking the dog is all that is required to make an owner realise their shortcomings. Parents should have a choice re qualifications

In reply to Judy Lawry’s feedback (Times, October 15), yes, I agree with you there is nothing wrong with NCEA qualification and it probably gives a better rounded assess-

ment of the student’s ability than the Cambridge one. However, that was not my point and I base my argument on the case of one very bright pupil from Macleans College who was nominated for Harvard and Yale but his applications were declined, and he was referred to Pennsylvania University, which ranks in the top 10 universities in America. On his acceptance, he relayed back to his parents that he was extremely grateful he had the Cambridge qualification, for without it he would not have been accepted, and we are talking about one of the world’s greatest lands of opportunity for career advancement and business success. The French just couldn’t bounce back and finish off the opportunities like our boys did. We had that accuracy and intensity that France couldn’t keep up with and that’s how we made those breaks and got those tries.

These pictures were taken on Sunday morning at around 7.30am at Mooney’s Bridge underneath the Pakuranga Highway at the Bucklands Beach Rd intersection. This area is a regular dumping ground for unsavoury materials, from plastic to bottles and supermarket trolleys. One can often see residents cleaning this area but somehow it has become a magnet for those with filthy habits. How sad. Rodney Thorne

black Labrador featured on the front of your newspaper (Times, October 15) made me feel really angry. What on earth is the point of having a dog if it spends its life tethered to a tree? Ok, he looks well-fed and he is said to be walked every day but what about the other 23 hours of the day? Dogs are sociable creatures and thrive on companionship and being part of a family. The owners

don’t seem very “lovely” to me if they are prepared to keep their dog in such isolating circumstances with no proper shelter for the rest of his life! Dogs need to be exercised, socialised and trained, and this takes time and commitment (but is very rewarding). Obviously, the poor creature’s owners are not prepared to do this so perhaps they should consider re-homing him and give him

• 450g beef mince • 1 red onion, finely diced • 200ml Campbell’s real stock • 420g Wattie’s chilli beans, drained • 300g Doritos tortilla chips • 150g Rolling Meadow tasty cheese, grated • 1-2 avocados • 1-2 limes, zest and juice • 2 tomatoes, diced • 125g sour cream Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil

Method:

Heat the oven to 180oC. Put the mince in a pot on high heat. Cook until brown then add ½ of the diced onion. Add the stock and turn the heat down. Cook for 20 minutes until most of the liquid has gone. Mix through the chilli beans and season. Spread the tortilla chips over the base of a tray or oven dish. Spread the mince in the middle leaving the edges clear and sprinkle with grated cheese. Put into the oven to warm until the cheese melts. Mash the avocado with the lime. Season. Remove the nachos from the oven and top with the avocado, tomatoes, remaining red onion and the sour cream. ➤ AND MORE: • While nachos were invented in Mexico they weren’t a traditional dish but something originally made for visiting Americans. • Add jalapenos for more heat in your nachos. • Very quickly blanch some spinach. Drain, chop and add to the tomatoes along with some olives. • Substitute lemons for limes.

Overwhelming real passion for concrete

lose to 5000 masonry blocks and 556 pre-cast concrete scrolls went into a Howick house that, in the face of 21st century minimalistic lines, is testament to another generation’s painstaking eye for detail. Eight years ago, house hunters Tina Hackett and Richard Mason were shown a building in Somerville containing about 10 times the amount of concrete a normal house would be built of. It was built single-handedly over three years towards the end of last century by Philip Morris, a builder who loved what could be made with concrete. Richard is a former chippie and immediately appreciated what Philip had done. When they met, Philip explained that he had one concrete mould, which is why he ended up with so many concrete scrolls decorating the solid concrete boundary fence around the perimeter of the section, the upstairs deck and curved pathways. “I didn’t like them at first,”

Richard says, “and they were not hard to remove. But after hearing Philip’s story, we left them where they were.” The house is set on a concrete block basement, including a self-contained flat. The first floor is built in Hinuera stone and is finished with concrete roof tiles. Its open plan design rivals houses built today, and it demonstrates that Philip was a man ahead of his time. For example he installed a clear glass rail to contain the solid concrete balcony, cantilevered out, giving no visual obstructions. He was also a joiner and loved rimu. So Tina and Richard opted to retain the beautifully crafted kitchen and dining room cabinetry. “We debated about pulling down two ornate concrete pillars [between the kitchen and dining room] but decided we liked them,” Richard says. The concrete comes into its own in the garden which was designed around feng shui lines. Dominating one corner is an Easter Island moai. Philip sculpted the figure in a day

and then filled it with seven tonnes of scrap steel and concrete. A curving row of ornate concrete pillars follows a pathway. They are topped by cantilevered concrete beams which are cleverly supported by concrete plant pots acting as counterweights. In true feng shui style, the pathway extends over a pond featuring a 2.4-metre-high tower constructed of house bricks.

It includes a waterfall which is controlled from the house. The waterfall plays into two further ponds and a submersible pump sends the water back to the tower. A 400-litre holding tank collecting rainwater from the house roof tops up the ponds when needed, and the overflow runs into a storm water pipe. ➤➤Turn to page 29

The builder’s forward thinking also resulted in running irrigation lines inside the beams and the Mr Easter Island figure. The most impressive feature, in Richard’s builder’s eye, is stone engineered into outriggers forming a cartwheel-shaped canopy over the outdoor living area. The courtyard contains a built-in pizza oven and dog kennel, complete with inbuilt water bowl refreshed by the irrigation system, all constructed of concrete. “This 360-square-metre house would cost $3000 a square metre today to build

in concrete, and the labour content would be huge,” Richard says. “There would be $200,000 on landscaping alone. “I appreciate the workmanship that has gone into the property,” he says. “The nostalgia and the history appealed to me. And it enthuses me to take care of it.” However, a burgeoning classic car and caravan interest has left the five-car garage bursting at the seams, and the couple are planning to move on. So it would be worth a look for any tradie who shares Richard’s respect and admiration for the vision of another era.

Swimmers dominate, Party every day bring home medals D

own syndrome does not stop three determined 20-yearolds from achieving big things. The three swimmers dominated the 25m backstroke event, claiming first, second and third place at the Down syndrome national swimming championships in Melbourne last month. Patrick Holmes from Howick claimed a gold medal, followed by Max Cussell from Whitford in second place, and Laura Harkins from Beachlands placed third. Holmes also came away with a bronze medal for the 25m freestyle. His mum Adele Oldbury said it was a real eye-opener for the team who had never swum in a 50m pool and were up against incredibly athletic swimmers from every state in Australia. I haven’t spent as much time with our kids as I should, so last weekend I took our oldest son Ryan to a show. It was kind of a fundraiser for old people. There was live music, food, refreshments, dress-up, and some old fashioned clothing for sale that consisted mostly of T-shirts, singlets and jackets. They even had face painting, which Ryan thought was pretty neat. Although there were two people doing the faces, and they were only using black and white paint, there was a massive queue so I told Ryan we weren’t going to bother. Although he wouldn’t admit it, I think he was a bit disappointed as there were a lot of people walking around with it done, and you know what kids are like. They see one person with something, and they want it too. I probably shouldn’t have growled at him. We hadn’t hung out in a while, but I couldn’t help myself: “Look Ryan, will you just shut up! Go and get yourself another beer and stop complaining.” In hindsight, I can see why he was whinging. He was over from Aussie for the weekend, he’d turned 29 the day before, and it’s

swim four times a week, coached by Sue Godfrey and Helen Castles, as part of the Howick Pakuranga Special Olympic Squad. Ms Oldbury says although it has been small steps, the team have really stuck to it and know they can achieve anything. Not only has swimming given these talented young adults something to work hard for but is

also a way for them to overcome issues involved with their disabilities. For Holmes, who has trouble with speech, Ms Oldbury says swimming has helped him tackle his frustration. “There is nothing better than water for kids with disabilities” she says. The team are hoping to compete in the World Swimming Games in Florence in 2018.

Three trophies for three talented siblings The Kearns siblings are rising football stars. Braydon, Davina and Ryley Kearns each took home Player of the Year awards at the Bucklands Beach Football Club end of season awards on Sunday October 18. Braydon won the award for the 17th grade Gunners team, Davina for the 12th grade Firebolts team and Ryley for Premier 9/10 grade Brazil team. Who knows what this fiery football family will achieve next.

not often you go to a rock concert and see fans queuing up to have their faces painted. But that’s Kiss for ya. Auckland was the band’s only New Zealand show, and it wrapped up an extensive 40th Anniversary world tour. Kiss rocked, plain and simple. Bassist Gene Simmons is 66 years old. Yes, that’s right, 66. I hope I have as much energy as he does when I’m that age. A Kiss concert is as much about the stage show as it is the music, and for some of the bands younger fans, the spectacle has more appeal than the songs. Ryan’s a perfect example. He only knows a couple of Kiss songs (no prizes for guessing that they are ‘I was made for loving you’ and ‘Rock and roll all night’) yet he described the night as one of the best concerts he’s been too. Even if he didn’t get his face painted.

he sun shone on a fabulous fundraiser held recently at Pakuranga Golf Club. Winger Motors and Pakuranga Park Village’s golf day to raise funds for Totara Hospice South Auckland was a resounding success! The day could not have been any better: a cheque for $21,000 for Totara Hospice South Auckland, fantastic weather, the course in superb condition, a record field of 160 golfers, a record level of sponsorship and, to top it off, a hole in one with the very first shot of the day. Yes, David James holed his tee shot on hole six a few seconds after the starting hooter. What made it even more special was that he was in the Fleetline Distributors team who sponsored the hole and he was using a new Bridgestone ball that the club pro Sam Thomas had convinced him to try only moments earlier. Sadly, David picked the wrong hole to score his ace. If he or, in fact, any

of the field had holed out on hole 11 they would have won a 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i valued at $47990! The event was something of a passing of the guard with Alan Beale retiring as CEO of Totara Hospice South Auckland during the year and we took the opportunity to welcome the new CEO Tina McCafferty along with her team of Mel and Katherine. Rotary tees off fundraiser The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay raised more than $48,000 last year through fundraising events. Next month they hope to fundraise even more at their annual golf tournament at the MALCOLM SWEETMAN Pakuranga Golf Club Photo supplied on November 9. Under the leadership of president Malcolm Sweetman, the club has recently commenced its new Rotary year continuing to support a range of local community and charitable organisations, including the Life Education Trust who will benefit from the golf fundraiser. Currently, with 56 members, the club is looking to grow the next generation of membership to help make a difference in the local community. The club supports the community in a number of ways, including work with primary and secondary schools, parks and walkways, and sponsorship for students on Rotary’s International Youth Exchange Programme.The public are welcome to attend one of the club’s meetings or social events as a guest. aving bagged coach Steve ‘Shag’ Hansen for his blasé reaction to some mediocre Rugby World Cup wins in pool play, I applaud his masterminding of the All Blacks magnificent 62-13 quarter-final triumph against France at Cardiff. In scoring nine tries to one, their overall superiority was incredible, with the forwards laying a springboard for their speedy backs to demonstrate their class. Nowhere was the skill level of the forwards better illustrated than by the superb offloads of props Charlie Faumuina and Joe Moody to set up tries to replacement halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow. With Richie McCaw leading by example and locks Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock upping their work rate, Jerome Kaino revelled in the tough stuff just as he had against Tonga. Especially pleasing was the performance of Dan Carter in orchestrating the back attack with speedsters Julian Savea, Ben Smith and Nehe MilnerSkudder causing havoc. Three tries to the power-

Their improvement was evident when they
