wo men have been arrested after a month-long robbery spree targeting banks and a petrol station in South and East Auckland. A 35-year-old man was arrested yesterday and appeared at the Manukau District Court facing six robbery charges, and one of aggravated robbery, for various

here are some raised eyebrows in the basement of the Howick RSA building as Rotary Club of Howick volunteers sift through hundreds of books. Reason being, they’ve already accumulated a box full of the erotic romance novel, Fifty Shades of Grey. “It must be past its prime,” Bookarama coordinator Colin Monk says. “Last year, it was the [2003 mystery] The Da Vinci Code.” But treasurer of the club’s Charitable Trust John Sanders is ruminating on the fact that New Zealanders should never starve, judging by the number of cookbooks that have been donated to the annual fundraising event. “It’s the largest category. I wish Alison Holst would stop writing.” It’s all in jest because Bookarama is now Howick Rotary’s biggest fundraiser, earning about $30,000 annually over the past several years. All the funds raised goes back to local community charities.

For the past four months, Rotary volunteers have been sorting the books in the basement of the RSA’s Wellington Street club premises and the increased response this year has resulted in the sorting days being increased from two a week to close to every morning. However, they are also faced with a dilemma many charity organisations are experiencing – having to dump products which, because of age or general wear and tear, are unsaleable. So a row

of green recycling bins have been installed this year. It’s the second year Bookarama has been held at the RSA site. It’s convenient, Mr Monk says, because the books only need to be shifted from the sorting area to an adjoining room next door. Children’s books account for one of the largest categories – 17 boxes were delivered from one household. Other goods include CDs, DVDs, some old vinyl long-play records, games, puzzles, jigsaws and even a

brand-new modem router. All will go on the sale tables. But Mr Monk says about 200 computer books have had to be dumped because they are out of date. Most of the books are sold for $3 but the volunteers place a higher charge on higher-value books. Bookarama is always preceded by an Early Bird night, which carries a $20 admission tag, and Mr Monk says it attracts dealers from far and wide. A regular has come from Napier in Hawke’s Bay for a few years. Last year, he arrived with eight travel bags, picked the eyes out of the collection and paid $1500 all up. “Some elderly people,” Mr Monk says, “buy a year’s supply of books and bring them back the following year for resale.” ■■ Bookarama runs on October 6-11, at the RSA, 25 Wellington Street, Howick (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 9am-5pm; Thursday, 9am-9pm; Sunday, 9am3pm. Community voice through art By Marianne Kelly Students at Somerville Intermediate School have been revelling in the opportunity to work with an internationallyacclaimed artist and to see their work on the walls of a public art gallery. Last term the year 7 and 8 classes learned from artist Tiffany Singh, creating art works to go on the wall in the Malcolm Smith Art Gallery at the Uxbridge Centre for Arts and Culture in Howick. Uxbridge is hosting the Mahabhuta: The Great Element exhibition which will also run at the Fo Guang Shan Buddist Temple Art Gallery. The exhibition title is a Sanskrit term translating to “the great [natural] element”. Ms Singh says the exhibition

is art with a socio/political agenda and the community is an active part of the end product. It’s multi-sensory reflecting on the natural environment. Since last March the Uxbridge team has been inviting community groups, local iwi, individuals and local schools to provide quotes or text which reflect on the natural elements of earth, air, fire and water. Somerville and Howick Intermediate Schools and Howick and Pakuranga Colleges responded. Somerville students transferred the many messages which came in a variety of languages to tin-embossed art works and cardboard strips with the messages drawn in hot glue on the cardboard followed

by silver plumbers tape pressed over the top to provide bright lines of text. All are now mounted on the Malcolm Smith Gallery walls along with other messages directly painted by students from the other schools and the community groups. The project is titled ‘The River of Verses’ reflected on the gallery walls as the messages run into each other in a continuous stream. Somerville art teacher Ros Craw says it is a unique opportunity for the students to have their work exhibited with someone like Ms Singh. “It doesn’t happen every day and they have chosen to have a say on how they feel. “To take part in an exhibition is an amazing experience for them. A lot had never been to an art gallery before and were

Bunnings workers strike in Botany By Rumer-Grace Archer

unnings have responded to claims made by workers on strike last week that they have no intention to change employee’s work hours without their agreement. Bunnings delegate Mike Hikuroa said they were bargaining with the company about changing their rosters but they walked away during mediation. “We were bargaining with the company and mediating and they walked away from the table.

“They say they sat down and talked for five days which is true, but we were still in mediation when they stopped,” Mr Hikuroa says. Dave Cooney from First Union who was taking part in the strike says they have been trying to negotiate with the company on behalf of Bunnings workers about the loss of security in employee’s work hours. “The main issue here is about security of hours and people worrying about their hours being chopped and changed every cou-

ple of weeks,” he says. Sue Johns, a meet and greet employee, was concerned that Bunnings were able to make drastic changes to rosters without employees’ agreement. “Whenever they wanted to they could employ people and within 24 hours change the whole roster. They’re wanting to take the agreement out of roster changes,” she says. First Union Retail and Finance Secretary Maxine Gay says workers are beginning to feel insecure in their job as they don’t have the

certainty to plan their lives and want to continue mediation with Bunnings. Strikes also took place outside Bunnings head office on Thursday and were expected to spread around the country. In a media statement released by Bunnings on Friday they said they are not intending to change rosters without agreement. Bunnings has no intention to make wholesale changes to teams’ roster patterns. And all changes that take place do so in full consultation with

Karma pup’s happy ending

arma – the dog whose plight touched many readers – lives on through one of her puppies. Reader Janka Wade said she read the Times story last month about Karma who came to be known for her frantic howling when she misplaced her pups in the wild where she was trying to raise them. Karma was eventually picked up by Animal Control after a heroic swim across the Tamaki River after hearing a dog howling on the other side. It was not one of her pups. Readers began to rally to try and save Karma however investigations found she had been euthanised. “I would like to follow up about the one puppy that got lost last from mommy Karma,” said Janka. “The puppy is with us. We got him from the lady who found him in her garden. We named him Maximus and he’s doing great. He has one very happy home and very loving family. “Maximus has a big ‘brother’ to play with. Our dog is such a loving teacher to him.” The older dog is a threeyear-old Jack Russell-Shih Tzu cross named Tiger. “Maximus is in so much love with him. You can tell he was born as ‘wild dog’. He doesn’t trust just anyone. He’s still very scared of cars, people and animals. But he loves and adores our dog,” said Janka.

But four puppies soon became one puppy. “They were lost and each time a puppy was lost she would howl all night and rush around frantically looking for it,” said Maria. “Karma had some happiness though with food in her tummy. We got glimpses of her playing with her remaining puppy. She was an excellent mum.”

School carnival a hit After a 19-year carnival drought, Cockle Bay School’s five months’ of hard work culminated in a magical feelgood day for hundreds of families. The recent Cockle Bay School Carnival drew a crowd of thousands, featuring 100 attractions including unicorn and Harley Davidson rides, water rollers, photography, art, bouncy castles, ferris wheel, petting zoo, treasure hunt, haunted house, performances as well as myriad food and clothing stalls. Celebrities also made an appearance including resident builder Peter Wolfkamp, also known as site foreman on The Block NZ, who played some building games with the guests,

then proceeded to get dunked! Parents, teachers and all involved were thrilled with the outcome of the carnival which raised $65,000 for the school.

e’ve heard the people’s frustrations, acknowledged what they’ve said and are responding with action. Many of us know the difficulties and irritations of dealing with local government bureaucracy and especially in regards to rules involving the Resource Management Act and the Building Act. We set up a Rules Reduction Taskforce and its conclusions in its new publication, The Loopy Rules Report: New Zealanders Tell Their Stories, outline plenty of practical opportunities for local councils and government departments to improve the service they offer and clarify their requirements of the people they serve. Information that formed much of the Loopy Rules Report came from you, members of the public, and we’re very grateful for it. The Taskforce staged 50 public meetings and received almost 2000 submissions. People’s frustrations revol-

ved around many rules that were described to be out of date, inconsistent, petty, inefficient, pointless and onerous, and that there are too many of them. Rules are also perceived to be causing delays, unnecessary costs, complexity and annoyance. The public also pointed out plenty of loopy rules in local government areas such as for dog control, tree cutting, health and safety, building and DIY work. Three-quarters of the issues raised by the public are to do with the responsibilities and actions of local councils, while two-thirds of the submissions related to the rules in the Resource Management Act and the Building Act. It was amazing to see what an exercise such as this uncovers in relation to the public’s understanding of what’s allowed. For example, myths to be dispelled are lolly scrambles are not banned and people can indeed use three-step ladders. The Taskforce is recom-

group of students have contributed their knowledge and skills to a project restoring native bush in a protected valley. Four of the eight Howick College Trades Pathway team assembled a plant propagation unit at Craig Brebner’s property in Point View Drive. The unit is one of a number operated by the Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM) which is the key group working on a native bush restoration project in the Mangemangeroa Valley Reserve in Somerville Road, Howick. One already commissioned was funded from the Howick Local Board’s operational expenditure budget while the new one was funded by Auckland Council through its Environmental Initiatives Fund, a contestable fund that allocates grants annually. FOM chairman Allan Riley says the ‘Friends’ appreciate very much this support. “It allows us to take our native bush restoration within the reserve confidently into the larger canopy tree species planting stage.” Work on the planting unit was part of the students’ unit standards for their engineering and fabrication course. Willem Du Toit who supervised the installation says the students applied the theoretical knowledge they had learned into a practical project. Part of the course criteria requires the work quality to be as

high as if they were working for a real-life commercial client. “Therefore the planting unit was a very appropriate project,” he says. “Before they assembled the unit at the property, they assembled it at school to ensure all parts were there and that all fitted. They also had to clean the threads of the holes after it was galvanised,” Mr Du Toit says. It’s a first for Craig Brebner, on whose property, overlooking the upper reaches of the reserve, the unit has been installed. He recently retired from fulltime work and saw an advertisement for someone to accommodate it. “I’ve not been involved in anything like this before. I love gardening, but I’ve never done any propagation before. “I will help out the FOM people. Now I have more time I can get involved in something like this.” FOM requires more planting units now that more mid to high canopy trees are being planted. Over the past 12 years plantings have included pioneer species such as manuka and karamu which will provide shelter for the canopy trees, Mr Riley says. “Since the first 2003 planting we have successfully established the wind protection in former barren areas of paddock. Now greater numbers of larger tree species need to be planted within those sheltered areas.”

HMB crash hotspot causing problems T

wo crashes have occurred at a Half Moon Bay intersection in over a week, prompting locals to call for change. The first accident was on Pigeon Mountain Road, at the Prince Regent Drive intersection at about 7.20am last Monday according to police. Police said two people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries. There were no further details available. Keith Ingram, who lives near the spot, says there is an “average one nudge nose-to-tail or minor” every week to 10 days. “The grey car (was) coming down the hill far too fast,” said Mr Ingram, who is chairman of the Half Moon Bay Residents & Ratepayers Association. “(The) dark car (carrying a) young fella came across the intersection from Sunderlands (Road) did not see (the) grey car until too late. “He received chest and head injuries, from crushing the steering wheel and head into windscreen. (The) woman in (the) grey car was in shock. Both her air bags went off. (A) witness said she was going far too fast. May have been racing for ferry don’t know. “ On Thursday, Mr Ingram shot more photos of another accident, this time involv-

ing a 4x4 “coming up the hill too fast”. He said there were minor injuries and a trip to A&E. His greatest worry however is school children who walk in groups to school. “We still have the walking bus and the new trip crossing to get to the other side is a crock,” Mr Ingram said. “Like they now have to cross Prince Regent then Pigeon Mountain and then Sunderlands Road to get to the side they want and need to walk on, increasing the period of risk three-fold.” He claims very few drivers come down Pigeon Mountain Rd side doing the speed limit 50km/h. “Problem is they have the power on coming up the other

side. While they ease the power is still on 60-70km/h and they do not have a good view of the Sunderlands Road entry,” he said. Likewise from Sunderlands Road, drivers did not have a good view of the intersection. “The intersection needs some form of positive control as in lights or a roundabout to slow everyone to give way to the right,” Mr Ingram said. Half Moon Bay resident Lindsay Upton said she contacted Auckland Council about the intersection initially for parking issues. Mrs Upton said she met with a road engineer from Auckland Transport last Wednesday. “He told me they are well aware of the problems and are working to solve them.”

If you are still not convinced, draw two columns - one 10cm tall, beside it one 4cm tall. Now draw a line across at the 4mm mark. The left hand column clearly shows 4/100 or 4 per cent. Long may the kids enjoy it, and I hope my fears are proved groundless, but will this be another feature of the park that will soon fall into disuse for lack of maintenance? Some years ago, we local walkers all appreciated the construction of the first track through the park, which opened up a wonderful natural resource. However, within a year or so, most of the drains were blocked and the tracks scoured out by heavy rains. After some agitation by yours truly, and probably many other users, another track was laid with a better drainage system. These drains didn’t block so easily but nevertheless needed some periodic attention to remain serviceable. This did not happen, and within a couple of years the track was damaged again. Does the council not realise that, as well as creating a structure, maintenance is required to keep it in working order? Would we build a house or buy a car and not maintain them?

All it would take to keep the tracks in good condition would be a few hours work as required occasionally. Living in peace and harmony One of the most important issues that have been left out of the flags debate and one which all New Zealanders can feel justifiably proud is that we are a country where all races and creeds are living in peace and harmony. My wife, who has extensively travelled throughout the world, including many Third World countries, has noted that no other country has treated its indigenous people better than New Zealand, and that is not just onesided. A great number of Maori welcomed and were of great assistance to the early settlers and today in much of the wider community. My father witnessed Maori and pakeha together being led to their slaughter at Monte Casino, fighting for what they believed might end up in a foreign takeover of their homeland (Nats please take note). Maori in co-operation with pakeha have made great strides in becoming competitive in the modern world. All of which makes it very important the flag represents the peaceful and harmonious blending of the many different cultures that exist in

New Zealand today, which strongly suggests the new flag should wait until we collectively mature as a nation. And for the national anthem knockers, that makes our national anthem even more relevant. “Men of every creed and race”...“peace not war shall be our boast”...“may our mountains ever be freedom’s ramparts on the sea”. Key must act on refugee crisis Re John Key and the refugee crisis. Surely, John Key could perhaps do a bit more to show a little more empathy towards the whole refugee crisis. His leadership ought to show where his weaknesses lie with the rejection of raising the Syrian refugee quota to more than 750. Yes, his reasoning provides that we as a country have been allowing refugee immigration for quite a long period of time. However, New Zealand has not increased its refugee quota since it was first set at 800 almost 30 years ago, in 1987.

This data only fuels the idea that it is not in John Key’s best inte-rests to support refugees. In addition, Key’s belief that if New Zealand were to encourage the influx of refugee immigrants into this country, then it would need to better its services before increasing the intake. To make matters worse, these Syrian refugees must face much harsher plights as human beings fighting for a means of survival. While we citizens might also fight for a means of survival in differing contexts, such as working to pay bills to say the very least, what must be noted is that refugees fleeing these war zones in particular must now fight twice as hard to maintain basic necessities which we are privileged to. Things like security, shelter, food and emotional understan-ding are all jeopardised due to warring zones. Yet even its bordering countries are unwilling to accept them to the extent that Hungary vows to arrest refugees who come into contact. With a crisis like this, the most humane thing that could be done is look into the issues and do something

about it. After all, these are humans who, just like us, have a right to the basic needs in life. And thus, the quota of the Syrian refugee intake should be doubled. This begs a clear cut but evocative question; what if we were in the refugee’s shoes? or most people, work is their main activity and interest throughout their lives. They dread the thought of retirement out of fear of boredom. And for good reason; when you leave the working world, you lose your established routines, your social network, and a sense of belonging. You lose the pleasure of having found your very own niche somewhere in society. Suddenly, you’re deprived of all your reference points, and you’re just not sure who you are anymore. You might feel useless with all that free time on your hands. And you know that in order to adapt to this new reality, you’ll have to learn to restructure your life somehow. To fully appreciate this new stage of your life rather than dreading it, you just have to be well prepared. So take stock of your interests, and take control of the situation now by listing all the activities you would like to indulge in when you’re well rested. When you’ve figured out what’s important to you and what your real values are, it will be easier to find activities, causes, and

You never had time to pursue your passions? The time has come to remedy the situation; take a class in music, art, sports, computers, language, cooking, or sewing. Take classes to develop a long-neglected talent, to perfect an art that you’re already familiar with, or to get acquainted with a new discipline. Will you miss all those discussions with your work colleagues? Join a group to share your passions or just to meet people and exchange ideas and opinions. You might want to join a book or bridge club, a bowling or hockey league, or do lawn bowling or sing in a choir. Becoming involved in hobbies and activities like these ensures you make the most of your retirement and planning in advance means you can look forward to a happy and fulfilling retirement.

egardless of what you’re called when you reach your retirement age (empty nester, middleaged, baby boomer or just plain retiree), it all means the same thing. You have progressed to a stage in life where you have time to do whatever you want. No longer do you need to worry with raising a family, or running a business, working for a boss, or any other obligation that kept you from doing the things you wanted to as a younger adult. The hard work of your younger adult life has passed and now you need something that will keep your retirement age jumping and hopping. You and your partner don’t have to sit back in your rocker recliners thinking about those good ole’ days. Instead, you can get up and do the things that you only dreamed you could when you were younger. Still not real sure how to enjoy your retirement phrase of life? Here are seven ideas you’re sure to like.

Activity 1 – Stay active

One of the first things you may want to do after you retire is rest. The problem with this idea is that you

Consider picking up a musical instrument and learning how to play. Learn a new language; something you may have wanted to learn for some time but never had the chance. If you’re in the mood for something creative, consider joining an art class. The options are endless!

Activity 3 - Stay social

Now that you’re not near as busy it’s a great time to get out and see old friends

awwww: Why not adopt an animal of your choice? If you love cats or dogs, you can visit your local animal shelter. and make some new ones. It’s a proven fact that when people are more socially active, they tend to be happier. Consider getting involved with a club where you can meet people who share a similar interest as you. You may find that you have more in common than you think with these folks. If you’re unsure of the kind of clubs that are available in your area, do a search on the Internet to find them or local newspapers usually have volunteer opportunities. You can even check your local chamber of commerce for some ideas.

You don’t have to just make a human friend to have social interaction. Why not adopt an animal of your choice? If you love cats or dogs, you can visit your local animal shelter. These animals will love you unconditionally and give you some real purpose. For whatever reason you may not be able to adopt a pet; why not do some volunteering at the shelter? This allows you to be around animals, taking care of them. If you have a neighbor that owns an animal, consider helping them take care of their pet. If you don’t know them very well, you may end up making a new friend and helping them at the same time.

Activity 5 – Mentor young minds

As a baby boomer, you have lots to give the younger generation. If you’ve got grandkids, share with them your knowledge and experience. If you can’t see your grandkids (for whatever reason), consider asking your neighbours if you can be a mentor to their children. Many parents would be glad to have you be a part of their children’s lives. You can

always volunteer at the local schools, coach a sports team or teach a knitting class and so much more.

Activity 6 – Travel

Have you always wanted to visit somewhere but never had the time? It can be across the International Dateline or right in your own backyard but traveling is a wonderful way to spend your time and expand your mind. Practice the new language you are learning and travel to the country that uses it. You don’t have to travel alone especially if you feel apprehensive about it. Ease your mind by going with a tour group that also offers opportunities to make new lifelong friends.

Activity 7 – Join a cause

If you have a particular cause you’re interested in, this is the time to get involved (if you’re not already). Working together with a group of people who share a common goal and purpose can be very fulfilling and gratifying to know that you are making a difference. On top of that, this type of work can help take your mind off of your own problems and oftentimes make your challenges seem smaller.

Allan and Linda Sargeant, owners of Ambridge Rose Manor Private Hospital, have taken the former Marvon Downs Rest Home at 369 Pakuranga Road, under their wing renaming it Ambridge Rose Villa Rest Home. 4. Keep your mind sharp – “Use it or lose it” applies to your brain. If you feel the need to replace the intellectual stimulation you found at work, try learning a foreign language or a musical instrument, or join a book club. Lifelong learning offers many opportunities to keep your mind sharp. How about checking out the lifelong learning classes offered by your local community centre or college?

5. Volunteer – Getting involved in your community is a great way to give back, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to interact with people and make new friends. Many organisations offer volunteer opportunities tailored for older adults. 6. Develop new friendships – A measurement of whether people are successful at retirement living is the strength of their social network—that includes family and friends. Check out groups that help you meet new people or join community or religious organisations that have members who share your interests. It’s possible to meet people and make new friends even if it’s difficult to get around. Did you know that friendship helps to increase longevity? 7. Ask your spouse or partner – If you live with someone or have a close partner, retirement living becomes a shared experience. It’s important to make time for you and your partner to both share your dreams—you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that your partner wants to join you on that Mt Cook climb, and he or she may have ideas you’ll enjoy. 8 Increase your financial stability – If you can’t afford to retire yet, what about partial retirement? This can include working part-time in your current job or finding a retirement job that’s new and interesting—and will also help you earn money. 9. Keep your spirits up – The life changes that come with retirement living can be very challenging, but your attitude plays a big part in whether you’ll find happiness in retirement living or not. Keep checking in with yourself to assess your mood; if you feel sad or hopeless it’s important to see your doctor or a professional counsellor. Learn the signs of senior depression (or ask a friend or family member to assess your mood) and don’t be afraid to ask for help. 10. Remain healthy – Carter brought up an old adage: A lean horse for a long race. With increasing life spans, retirement living can be a long race, so get yourself in shape. That means eating well, watching your weight and staying active. When you feel good, it’s easier to stay positive and open to new experiences. The pressure is already at its peak for our boys so you’d think, rather than the constant critiquing, we would back our team and show them genuine support. Ingredients:

• 70g walnut pieces, finely chopped • 2 lemons juice and zest • 1½ cups panko breadcrumbs • 500g chicken breast, skin removed • 2 egg whites • 3 celery sticks • 2-3 avocados • ¾ telegraph cucumber • 1 pkt pita bread Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil

Mix together the nuts, lemon zest and the breadcrumbs. Put onto a dinner plate. Slice the chicken breast into finger thick slices. Season well, with plenty of pepper. Whisk egg whites and 2 tbs of water in a shallow dish until mixed. Dip the chicken pieces in the egg white mixture and then roll in the crumb mixture. Heat a little oil in a fry pan on medium heat and fry the chicken until well cooked. While the chicken is cooking finely slice the cucumber and celery into skinny strips. Scoop out the avocado, slice and tip the lemon juice over the slices. Season well. Cut each pita bread in half to create a pocket. Mash a 1/3 of the avocado and spread some inside each pita. Add the celery, cucumber and chicken. Serve with a spoonful of avocado on top.

hile residential real estate values have plateaued in parts of the Super City, the rate in the old districts of Manukau, Franklin, Papakura and Rodney is faster than ever in the last three months, according to QV New Zealand figures. Latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures show the Eastern Beaches dwelling median price in August is up 29 per cent at $977,500 compared with $757,750 the same time last year. Dwelling numbers sold in

Eastern Beaches in August were up 16 per cent to 184 compared with 158 in August last year, while the median days to sell were down six per cent to 34 from 36. Half Moon Bay was the only Eastern Beaches area among the top 20 on Barfoot & Thompson’s Auckland ‘hot spots’ list, coming in eighth. Jonno Ingerson, director of research for CoreLogic NZ, says the main driver for Auckland is a shortage of property along with speculative behaviour. However many proper-

ties sold have been held less than three years before being re-sold as a result of rapidly increasing property values. “The changes introduced by the Government are designed to curb this speculative behaviour and they are likely to be partly successful. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the bubble will burst. There remains a housing shortage that is a long-term, not short-term, problem.” REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne says listings remain in short supply, and even though the number of

listings is up over 35 per cent compared with 12 months ago, the number of sales is up 40 per cent, continuing the shortage. Harcourts chief executive Hayden Duncan says the northern market showed no sign of a winter slowdown. “The high demand, low supply equation in Auckland continues to fuel rising prices and fast sales,” he says. “With spring, the typical ‘waking up’ period for the market, upon us it doesn’t seem as though things are due to slow down.”

Pool fencing law rules simplified

hanges to current swimming pools fencing legislation are expected to improve safety by further reducing numbers of children drowning by six per decade, while also reducing compliance costs by $17 million. A more consistent and practical approach is expected as the result of the Building (Pools) Amendment Bill introduced to Parliament to replace the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987. Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith says the law on fencing swimming pools needs updating because the current law is excessively prescriptive with inconsistent and cumbersome requirements that contribute little to children’s safety. “These changes will reduce the bureaucracy and compliance costs of the current regime, while also saving more lives by ensuring more consistent compliance,” he says.

Some local authorities require three-yearly inspections and others not at all. ■■ Retailers and manufacturers will be required to inform buyers of their

obligations under the Act when they buy pools to ensure children’s access is restricted. ■■ Garden ponds and storm water retention ponds will not need to meet the swimming pool fencing requirements, clarifying the differing interpretations currently made by councils. ■■ Performance-based standards in the Building Code will be used to specify fencing requirements, rather than the current duplicate and inconsistent requirements. ■■ A graduated enforcement regime will be introduced with infringement notices as the preferred tool for compliance, while court prosecutions will only be pursued in the case of serious breaches. Dr Smith says the Act has been

successful in reducing child fatalities in pool accidents, from about 10 per cent to three per cent annually. But it has also been a source of frustration for many councils and homeowners. “This Bill is a refinement on proposed changes announced in 2013,” he says. “It was proposed then to reduce the depth from 400 millimetres to 300 millimetres for triggering fencing requirements. But this has now been dropped. “The change to incorporate fencing requirements for swimming pools into the Building Act is to provide for simpler compliance and better enforcement. We also want a performance-based approach rather than a prescriptive approach to keeping young children safe from pools.”

Bucklands Beach takes third place Bucklands Beach Intermediate had an incredible run at the AIMS Games in Tauranga, placing third overall with a total of 10 gold, silver and bronze medals last month The boys’ tennis team placed first beating close rivals Somerville Intermediate and St Kentigern College. The girls’ cheerleading team convincingly cheered their way to victory, winning a gold medal. Although the girls and boys hockey teams didn’t place, the mixed six-a-side hockey team reigned supreme winning gold. Rose Zheng took out first place for individual golf, closely followed by school mate Jessica Huang in second place. The school also stole the show in badminton, with two gold medals and three silvers.The talent didn’t stop there with gym-sport and cross country earning silver medals as well as table tennis and aerobics placing third.

he exceptionally talented 11-year-old, Brandon Meyer, has become the national champion in both wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Brandon competed in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Nationals, held at the Trust Arena in Auckland recently, in a division of six boys, beating all his opponents by submission. The year six Wakaaranga Primary School student joined a children’s class at the Auckland Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) academy in Pakuranga in 2012 and was quickly invited by his coach to join his dad

Brandon was an eager student and, wanting to improve, decided to learn wrestling as well, going on to compete in four competitions, winning gold in all of them including the national championships. He trains at Club Physical under Clinton Davies, a wellknown blind wrestler and for BJJ at Auckland MMA under brown belt Van Robertson; and at Tu Kaha under third degree black belt Pedro Fernandes. This young prodigy enjoys BJJ and wrestling because it is

as much about using your mind as well as your body. “I like how you’re not using strength completely, you are also thinking about the next move, it’s all kind of like playing chess but you’re using your whole body,” Brandon says. Brandon is currently training five to six days per week in preparation for the Pan Pacific BJJ Championships in Melbourne next month. On top of that, Brandon will also be attending an advanced BJJ training camp hosted by Auckland MMA in the school holidays.

Time taken in setting scrums has long been an eyesore and I agree with those who question the legality of the maul when the ball carrier is protected from would be tacklers by team-mates in front of him. This time Namibians spent an awful long time being treated for injuries and making replacements off the reserves bench. When you add the time wasted on calls made to the TMO, watching grass grow can be more excit-

ing. Failure to speed the game up so that players and spectators can enjoy constant action rather than repeated stoppages is an indictment on the intelligence of the lawmakers. For me the other disappointment to come from this match was the failure of Daniel Carter to attempt breaks. His kicking and tackling is spot on but some incisive attack will be required of him when it gets down to the nitty gritty. Want dream job but can’t deal with traffic I’ve been into cars since before I was born. No, actually it’s been longer than that. After getting kicked out of home at 17, I spent some time looking at ladies’ underwear. And stockings. Kinky, but don’t get all excited. It was my first job, walking the floor at Manukau Knitting Mills watching for runs in fabric. If I spotted a run, I had to push the machine’s big red ‘stop’ button. That was it. Makeover at Whitford Tennis Club

Tootill comes back to take the win

Long-overdue renovations on Whitford Tennis Club tennis courts have finally begun. The courts will be closed while work is in progress which is expected to take two to three weeks, depending on the weather. The club has been granted a lease of the pavilion and the shelter outside the courts which they also plan to renovate when they have more funds and support. Memberships to the club are currently being updated so all club members need to rejoin and new members are encouraged to join too. ormer blokart world champion Sarah Tootill from Botany Downs dominated the light weight performance division with a win at the 2015 NZ Open Blokart Championships. She won in a very close event, having only recently returned to the sport after a few years off due to injury. The heavy weight division went to local racer Russell Harray who held the lead throughout, maintaining a slender margin on the last day with Matt Murray sailing production for the first time and taking second place. For Saint Kentigern College student Murray, 14, the youngest sailor at the championships, it was a major achievement after moving from the entry level C division last year, which he won, into the open production division against all competitors from throughout New Zealand. The competitors are divided into two classes - production where there are no modifications to the blokart and performance with modifications allowed within strict one design rules. The performance class races in four weight divisions. The Auckland Blokart Club had 29 individuals competing with nine from east Auckland competing at the Blokart Recreational Park in Papamoa from September 17-20.The event was held in a variety of conditions with predominantly light wind however heavy rain on Saturday flooded the track for Sunday’s final races, with deep puddles proving hazardous.
