ake is an ordinary teen who tolerates school and hopes to hold down a good job one day. Sport is a bit of a mission because he wears glasses, otherwise his aspirations are really not that much different from those of many other 15-year-olds. Studying and school attendance and all the attendant teen stuff is more than enough to occupy a student’s life. Jake (he wanted us to use his real name), though, has had to put up with constant bullying since his days at Somerville Intermediate. He contends he has been the target of bullying from one particular guy – Boy X – for more than four years now. The hounding persisted even after he changed suburbs and school two years ago. This former school colleague just wanted to bash him, apparently for standing up for himself. “I have no idea what for. He also messages me from Facebook
saying that he is going to smash me,” Jake told the Times. “I recently moved schools to Rosehill (College, Papakura). My first day there I got a message from (Boy X) saying: ‘Good luck at Rosehill. I gt (sic) a few connections there (signed with emoticons including a fist).’ ” Jakes adds: “I feel unsafe every time I walk around school and I shouldn’t have to feel that way in a safe environment.” It turns out Boy X is – or was – part of the so-called Green Gang, a group which really only became known to many of us last week after a concerned mum posted allegations online. She claimed drunk teens knocked at their door last Thursday night in Northpark demanding to know where their 15-year-old son (not Jake). Her son “is constantly being harassed by them”. She said: “Four of them stood at the door with bandanas around
their faces asking to see my son. When my husband asked for them to remove themselves, they kept asking for my son.” The concerned mum said a girl (Girl Y) with the group allegedly said: “He is gonna die tonight,”referring to the son. Our story created an enormous stir and generated much feedback on our Facebook page. The post reached almost 10,600 people. Some of the feedback apparently identified a number of the culprits, their schools, interests and friends. Girl Y even made comments confirming the ‘gang’ did turn up, although she and others contested some of the accusations. She suggested just two were at the family’s door and that Boy X – suggested by some online to be the gang’s leader – was not there for the altercation but did arrive later. Boy X, Jake’s alleged tormen-
tor, is thought to be 15 or 16, and lists his school as Botany Downs Secondary College but seems to have left there. The girl’s school is listed as Green Bay High School and the photo above is from her Facebook profile. She said she too has left school. There were indications online this week that the Green Gang was disbanding however a woman on a closed social media website posted this yesterday: “So have just heard there’s been another incident at Pakuranga College involving the green gang. A bunch of girls in the “gang” waited outside the college with wrenches up their sleeves in an attempt to attack a young girl. Luckily other students got to the girl and got her to the office before the gang got her.” The post has attracted dozens of comments however the Times understands this incident to be fictitious. ➤ Turn to Page 2

Nathan Hey directs the stage production of Peter James’ thriller The Perfect Murder. The book has been adapted for the stage by Shaun McKenna who takes us from droll one-liners,

exits through five different doors drives the momentum at a heady pace. Fiona Hall is dynamic as she morphs from the downtrodden wife to a sexy siren. She also delivers an eloquent peek into the foils of human nature as fact is dismissed in the desire for self preservation. Her final part in the plot is all too believable. Where there is murder there is a need to get rid of the evidence, efficiently delivered by the cast as they undertake the heart-stopping yet hilarious disposal of a body on stage. But is it a perfect murder or not? MPs call for arterial takeover L
ocal MPs are pushing Transport Minister Simon Bridges to designate the locally owned South Eastern Arterial as a state highway. If successful, the busy arterial road that is the main route to and from Howick, Pakuranga and Botany, would come under the control of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). It would mean the arterial’s management and future development would be taken from council control and become the responsibility of the taxpayerfunded government agency. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson believe it is in the best interests of the local community and have met with Mr Bridges to
press the matter. “We’re lobbying to have the South Eastern Arterial designated as a state highway,” says Mr Ross. “It’s at motorway standard, everyone thinks it’s a motorway, and it carries 45,000 vehicle trips a day. “That’s strong justification for it to be classed as a state highway; as a motorway. Mr Ross and Mr Williamson are not stopping at a change of ownership of the road. The pair are also advocates of a wider plan to integrate South Eastern Arterial into the work underway planning for the East-West Link. “The East-West Link is designed to connect from the west and State Highway 20

through Onehunga, Penrose and Mt Wellington to the Southern Motorway”, says Mr Ross. “But it needs to have a direct connection to the east to truly be an East-West connection. That’s why Maurice and I think it’s important for NZTA to work on linking the new project directly through to Howick via the South Eastern Arterial.” The idea supported by the two MPs would see the East-West Link project create an additional connection from the Onehunga foreshore, through Hamblins Hill, direct to South Eastern Arterial and on to Pakuranga. Mr Ross and Mr Williamson are going a step further than seeking state highway designation for South Eastern Arterial,
calling for the scheduled Reeves Road Flyover – part of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) – to also be considered in their bid for state highway status and NZTA management. “The Government is currently streamlining the consent process for the East-West Link to bring forward its construction,” says Mr Williamson. “It makes sense that the EastWest Link includes the South Eastern Arterial through to the proposed Reeves Road flyover in Pakuranga.” The Reeves Road Flyover was controversially deferred by a decade by Auckland Transport last year, only to be later revived after local protest.

Tom Brown, father of Auckland Mayor Len Brown, has died at the age of 90. Mr Brown says his father was well-known in the eastern communities. At one time he attended the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Howick and sang in its choir. “He had extraordinary networks in the community and was universally loved and respected,” Mr Brown says. “He stood by himself with his mana. He lived a great life, was a great man and highly loved by his family.” Mr Brown senior was living

Buddha’s Birthday Times photos by Wayne Martin A kaleidoscope of colour, cultural activities, entertainment and food galore filled the sprawling grounds of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple on Sunday as young ladies in beautiful, traditional Chinese regalia from different dynasties walked around with ornate head gears and flowing gowns. More than 6000 people paid a visit to the temple in Flat Bush to mark the grand Buddha’s Day Multicultural Festival. The baby blessing ceremony was another big draw with a long line-up of strollers filling up a huge corner of the temple as mothers waited with their babies in arms to receive blessings. From Spanish dancing to tai chi, Indian dancing and Chinese dancing, the celebration was an absolute feast for the senses.

Views wanted on beach pathway The Eastern Beach pathway seems to be working well, so why couldn’t it do so at Bucklands Beach?
A
mirror image of the pathway installed at Eastern Beach which is working well could be achieved along the foreshore of Bucklands Beach, according to Howick Local Board chairman David Collings and elected member Gary Boles who is on the board’s parks and esplanade reserves portfolio committee. The board is calling for feedback on initial plans for a new and upgraded Bucklands Beach pathway and will hold a public meeting this Monday. Mr Boles says the proposal is a pathway, not a cycleway. “It’s planned as a continuation of the Warren boardwalk which links to the Rotary Walkway and the Panmure Bridge,” he says. “But there is no connectivity because it stops here at Little Bucklands Beach.” Mr Boles, who is a local resident, says his main concern is about safety. Where the walking area along the beachfront narrows and there is no footpath, people still like to walk on the seaward side. But it means they must walk on the road. “One night I came upon walkers two abreast on the road and I
had to do an evasive swerve. The reality for this part of the foreshore is that it’s a safety issue.” The Rotary walkway is wide enough for people on foot or bicycles, he and Mr Collings say. “There is no demand from high-speed bikers along here.” Mr Collings says members of the board don’t want to lose the beach front or parking, so the options may involve crimping the road which would also slow traffic. “We want to keep as much green as possible and as much parking as we can, but we need a safe pathway.” Mr Collings says the plans and decisions made at this stage cover only the section from the Warren Boardwalk to Grangers Point. “But let’s look at the full beach for the long-term. There are times when we have unallocated money which could be used to go further if we have a plan. “We are encouraging people to come and have input, including those who are not residents but who use the beach regularly.” ■■ A public meeting is at 6pm this Monday, May 16, at Bucklands Beach Memorial Hall, 1 Wharf Road, Bucklands Beach.

F
or someone who retired three years ago, Dyann Calverley’s community work CV reads like a telephone directory of different posts she has held within community organisations. Current chair of Manukau East Council of Social Services (Mecoss), an umbrella organisation that hosts the Howick and Pakuranga as well as Botany, Flatbush and Ormiston Safety Network group bi-monthly meetings, has everyone in a tizzy, as she has resigned from the post. After bringing the organisation up to speed, injecting it with vibrancy – by introducing the concept of Community Safety Networking Breakfasts at the Howick Club and inviting high profile speakers to share their experiences – Ms Calverley is on the lookout for someone to take over as chair. “I have been working furiously in the community for the last three years and last Christmas I thought I need time out!” says the lady who was on the former Botany Community Board, and is currently chairperson Race Relations Day. Most people who have been asked to join the party say those are big shoes to fill. But Ms Calverley is certain that each candidate will bring along a different set of skills. Having lived and worked as a fashion buyer with topof-the-line apparel stores in Singapore, Italy, London and Australia, it’s the wander lust that has taken over the lady with a zest for life.

Excitement and anticipation is building as the opening nears for the newly redeveloped Uxbridge Arts and Culture centre. More than a decade in the wanting, almost the same in the planning, and two years in the building, the long-awaited modernera public arts and culture centre is about to be unveiled to Howickians – in part. The first stage of the more than $6 million redevelopment, including the brand new Uxbridge Road-facing café, Malcolm Smith Gallery, rooms and studios for public arts programmes, workshops and classes, and offices, will be officially opened on Saturday, June 11. I, however, have a very wellmannered Staffy who I spent over $400 on manners/training classes – but reading Ian’s letter it is saying that because my dog does treat me as the leader, it will be dangerous to younger children? My dog has been around lots of people, including young toddlers, and is very gentle. Often she will remove herself from children as she doesn’t enjoy being poked in the eyes, smothered, or have her tail pulled, etc. I have brought up my dog very similar to bringing up my children. Be firm, be fair, respect others and be consistent. And I’m proud to say I think my dog has turned out really nice (and that’s not just my opinion), and my

Re Big fireball mystery (Times, May 5). Really? Is news so slow or people so silly? How many times are we to see photos of an airliner flying away into the setting sun being labelled as ‘Fireballs’ or ‘UFOs’ or what not? The explanation once and for all... aeroplane climbs through or into air where it starts to leave a contrail – the line of water vapour-forming cloud behind it setting sun shines and reflects off said ‘cloud’ and makes pretty line in sky. Aeroplane flies away, as
aeroplanes tend to do at least half of the time, and contrail descends toward horizon. Sometimes this happens in reverse, the contrail climbs into the sky i.e. it is ‘arriving’, this is usually accompanied by stories of strange rocket tests or UFO launches. What causes this strange ‘climbing and descending’ behaviour? It is caused by a phenomenon evidently outside the understanding of some readers (and reporters!) - THE WORLD IS ROUND! Name withheld

Re Orchestral change of guard (Times, February 11), I am so pleased to hear that MSO has a wide age range of players. I am 65 and for many years I played in the Howick Orchestra,
Papatoetoe and Papakura orchestras, Pukekohe Light Opera, and even St Mathews in Parnell. I play clarinet. I have also played on the worship team at our church, and recently have started doing this again. Due to several spinal ops, I needed to temporarily stop going to practice, but then business commitments ended up taking a lot of time. But my heart aches to play in a group again as I love music so much and enjoy being in an orchestra and having that commitment to practice, and have something to work for. I fear, sadly, it is difficult, if not impossible to get back in. I would be keen to know if there is a group in south Auckland that meets for the enjoyment of playing. Dianne Appleton
Footpaths are getting there
I would like to share with you the frustration I feel about the footpath restoration project in Kilkenny Drive. In early April work commenced on the restoration of the length of Kilkenny Drive. When only about two thirds of the job was completed, the workers left around two weeks ago and left many sections of the footpath in various stages of repair. Some repaired sections are still waiting to have top soil filling along the edges and have left large gaps along the edge. Some are excavated with boxing in place for concreting but stakes protrude from the boxing and I class them as a hazard. I am sure that the workers went to Gossamer Drive and started another similar project there leaving Kilkenny Drive unfinished. I have tried the council to find out why but cannot get past the call centre. Tug of love SOLUTIONS, with the Citizens Advice Bureau
Y
ou may have recently followed the child abduction case involving Channel 9 News and asked yourself the question, ‘how do the rules apply here in New Zealand’? If you believe someone is about to take your child overseas you can ask the Family Court to make an order to prevent this. This is called an Order Preventing Removal. You will also need to ask for a Border Alert so Customs can stop your child from boarding an aircraft or ship leaving New Zealand. This order can be applied for if taking the child out of New Zealand would be in breach of a parenting order, or would defeat a person’s intention to apply for day-to-day contact with the child. ‘My child has been taken overseas without my permission – what do I do’? Take action as soon as possible, report the child missing to the Police and contact the Ministry of Justice or a lawyer for help applying for the return of the child. The options for getting your child back depend on the country they have been removed to. If the country that the child has been abducted to is covered by the Hague Convention, then the following applies. The child must be under 16 years old; the child was living in New Zealand at the time he/
she was taken overseas; you have the ‘rights of custody’ to the child (legal guardianship); the child was taken or kept overseas without your consent or the consent of the Court. The Court may for various reasons decide not to return the child to the country where they normally live. One of the main reasons is if the Court considers there is a grave risk that the return of the child would expose him/ her to physical or psychological harm. What to do if you are asked to return a child? You may be served with an application for return of the child and given time to respond to the application. It would be advisable to talk to a lawyer and check if you are entitled to legal aid. The Citizens Advice Bureau will also be able to help guide you with this. ■■ Children abducted to nonHague Convention countries: Different laws apply and you will need to talk to a specialist
lawyer if you are in this situation. In the majority of cases you will need to engage a lawyer in the overseas country to take legal proceedings to help you get your child back. To take a person overseas, you need to get the agreement of anyone who has the day-today care of, or contact with, your child. Endocrinology is the science of hormones. Hormones are chemicals produced by one part of the body and act upon another part. An endocrinologist is a specialist doctor interested in diseases that affect your hormones. Dr Jovina Goh is a New Zealand trained Endocrinologist, Diabetes Specialist and Specialist Physician of Chinese descent who was born in Malaysia. Most of her earlier years were spent in Malaysia but she has lived in New Zealand for 17 years, giving her a unique perspective on the cultural aspects of both societies. She speaks fluent English and conversational Mandarin, Hokkien and Bahasa Malaysia (Malay). Dr Goh attended the Auckland School of Medicine and graduated in 2002 with her MBChB degree. She then completed her specialist training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Internal Medicine in the Auckland region and was awarded fellowship (FRACP) of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2011. Since 2011, Dr Goh has been practising at Middlemore Hospital as a Consultant Endocrinologist, Diabetes specialist and Specialist Physician. ue and Charles Miller have been part of the Howick and Pakuranga community for close to 25 years and, with their Driving Miss Daisy franchise for Howick and Pakuranga, are committed to serving the community. Providing exceptional service, they say, is about giving people independence and empowering them to live life to the full. Book a car to go to the airport and the journey doesn’t necessarily stop at the terminal entrance. If a passenger is in need of more assistance, Sue, Charles or one of their four drivers will see them through the checkin and baggage process, leaving only once they are safely through the departure doors. However, people of all ages use the service and even if you are hale and hearty they provide extremely pleasant and personable transport. “We are not taxis,” Charles says. “Technically we are a private hire driving service which is pre-booked and pre-quoted so that people know what the cost is before they start out. The service is also available in the evenings and over weekends, which makes it an ideal option for trips to and from the city, theatres, weddings and family functions. It is important to pre-book evening and weekend events well in advance. “Weekends and evenings are an opportunity for people to
club together to go to a show, the Botanic Gardens or a tour of the wineries,” Charles says. “If they club together it’s more affordable because the cost is by the car, not the person.” Sue and Charles are sensitive to the cost pressures facing everyone these days and Charles says: “We work very hard on keeping Driving Miss Daisy affordable”. About a fifth of all their drives are taking people to medical appointments, and a similar amount is taking people of all ages to special programmes. Going to the hair dresser and shopping trips is also a big part of the business. Delivering children and young adults to and from school, university or polytechnics or children to and from after-school activities can be done when mums and dads are working. Working with people who have suffered accident and trauma and are undergoing rehabilitation is also an important activity they support. The service is an accredited ACC and Total Mobility provider. This extends not only to the rehabilitation but also the maintenance of family life while it takes place, for example getting to and from day-care. The business is also about supporting clients to be independent and active. “Sometimes we will pick up a shopping list and deliver the
goods to the client,” Charles says. “Sue has been out with clients to help buy furniture, appliances and clothing. We’ll undertake any task we can to help a client solve a problem.” The Driving Miss Daisy service is an end-to-end experience. “If clients live on their own we will make sure their house is locked before leaving and assist them with unlocking and getting them settled on their return.” “We give people independence, friendship and an ear,” he says. On one occasion Charles took a gentleman client from Howick to Maraetai to share a meal of fish and chips on the beach. “It’s a way for people to get out and enjoy life’s experiences,” he says. “Many of our clients are regulars and we get a great deal of joy from providing people with independence, seeing them live life to the full and remain an integral part of the community.” The Millers became aware of the Driving Miss Daisy franchise in the Howick and Pakuranga Times and have used the newspaper to advertise their driving business since it started. However the links go back to 1995 when, as an executive in the print and paper industry, Charles established his longstanding relationship with Times owners Reay and Brian Neben.

Younger people, they say, express things quickly, screaming and shouting a lot, compared with older people where a build-up is more subtle, refined and more body language is used. They say they have also learned how it is important to have a relationship with other cast members rather than being on the stage for themselves. In this play, they say, it is important to make everyone else look good. With most scenes one on one, they say they’ve learned to appreciate the importance of projecting their voices and acting realistically. nippets of life in a contemporary setting will be canvassed in Botany Downs College production of a contemporary play Love and Information. Director Jacqui Hood took on the challenging job of spreading 100 different characters between 17 performers over more than 56 scenes. Working from the author’s blueprint, Ms Hood has worked on the context of seven sections where the scenes can be played in any order and the other optional scenes which can be random and as few as three or four lines. “In pre-planning I considered the text and the characters and then looked at the cast,” she says. “The themes are extremely relevant, about how we deal with each other in relationships, in love and loss and in everyday situations. “Some scenes are only four lines long, for example a doctor telling someone they are about to die and what relationships come out of that,” she says. “Depression scenes are an essential part of the play; aspects of human experience. We are not always on top of the world so the play

There’s no shortage of great ideas for decorating a home using salvaged or recycled objects. Here are three simple projects that are sure to add an original touch to your decor. ■■ Well-dressed cushions Do you have some fabric cushions that are faded or have outdated patterns or colours? Cover them with fabric from clothes you no longer wear, whether it’s because of a broken zipper, an unsightly tear or a small stain that’s impossible to remove. It’s a great way to breathe new life into cushions and clothes. ■■ A wok in the garden Don’t throw away an old, badly scratched wok. In a few easy steps it can be turned into
a great planter. After painting, line the bottom with dried moss. Place some small stones upon the moss for drainage and then fill the wok with soil. Now plant whatever you want; put it somewhere in the yard and sit back and listen to visitors’ surprised comments. ■■ Door handles Redundant doorknobs have many uses. Screw a few into an attractive wooden plank and attach it to a wall in the entrance hall. It can be used for hanging things such as coats, bags, scarves and umbrellas. Door handles can also be used as curtain hooks. Hang necklaces and bracelets on some door handles attached to a wall.

EECA Energywise technical expert Christian Hoerning says spending a bit more upfront on a modern wood burner, heat pump or flued gas heater works best for larger rooms that need to be heated regularly, such as living areas. For other rooms used infrequently, a portable heater may work well. They are cheap to buy but more expensive to run than fixed heaters. ■■ Heat pumps When used properly heat pumps have low running costs and produce instant heat. The temperature can be controlled with the thermostat and the timer. They must be sized correctly for the space and the climate to work well. Some are more efficient than others. They won’t work during a power cut. And for houses near corrosive environments like the coast, householders should check with the supplier for applicable warranties. ■■ Modern wood burners If there is access to free or cheap fire wood they have low running costs. They produce little pollution and use renewable wood energy. They are good for heating large spaces and heating hot water in winter through a wetback system. Firewood must be dry to burn cleanly and efficiently, so householders need to plan ahead and store the wood under cover ideally for at least 12 months. A building consent is needed to install one and, unless the property is larger than two hectares, an

Different types all have the same efficiency; that is the same amount of heat output per unit of electricity used. Many have built-in thermostats but generally are not very accurate. ■■ Central heating Heating for the entire house is provided and the temperature can be controlled with the thermostat and timer. Many are zone-controlled so the temperature can be controlled in different parts of the house. However the system can be expensive to install. Heat can be supplied by a range of heating systems, including gas, wood pellet or a hot water heat pump. It’s worth choosing a system that has an individual thermostat for each room. Central heating can be extremely expensive to run if the house isn’t well insulated or is draughty. Some systems are more efficient than others so look for the Energy Star. ■■ Unflued gas (natural or LPG) If normal heating relies on electricity, these are useful for backup heating during power cuts. But unflued LPG heaters are the most expensive form of heating and carry health risks. The air will be polluted with toxic gases and large amounts of water vapour so at least one window should be kept open when in use and the heaters should never be used in bedrooms. They can make a house damp and mouldy. Portable LPG heaters can be a fire risk, as anything too close can quickly catch alight.

Heat control produced is better than a wood burner, they will heat large spaces and hot water in winter through a wetback system. Check local pellet prices before getting a wood pellet burner which will not burn fire wood, only pellets. ■■ Flued gas (natural or LPG) heaters or fireplaces The temperature can be controlled with the thermostat and timer. Larger areas will be heated for longer periods. A fixed charge will probably have to be paid for reticulated gas supply if it is not already onstream and the gas heater must be installed by a registered gas fitter. Some gas space heaters are more efficient than others so look for the Energy Star. ■■ Electric heaters Electric heaters are good for heating a small room infrequently and for short periods. They are also very cheap to buy. However they are more expensive to run than most other heating options. Different types, such as radiant, convection, or fan, deliver heat in various ways.

Caution over price-toincome cap I
ntroduction of a priceto-income cap to address house price inflation is being mooted by the Government. But Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive, Ashley Church says the cap controlled by local councils would “almost certainly” have the opposite effect from that intended. Finance Minister Bill English has floated the idea that the Government could set a house price-to-income ratio for local bodies to “ensure councils release the right amount of land to keep housing affordable”. It’s different from a similar idea floated last year, where the cap would have applied to banks and would have restricted the amount they could lend to a multiple of the borrower’s income. Under the new proposal the cap would require councils to open up more land for development in a given area if the average price of houses in that area exceeded an as-yet unspecified multiple of the average income in the same area. The theory is based on the expectation that land prices would drop as more land was freed up. There is
also an implicit expectation that relative building costs would reduce over time. However, Mr Church cautions that both assumptions are tenuous and a price-to-income cap controlled by councils would have the opposite effect from that intended. “Councils would inevitably use such a cap as an excuse to constrain growth, rather than allowing the market to find its own balance,” Mr Church says. Councils would have a ready-made excuse to limit greenfields development to only those areas required by legislation, rather than a need to open up large new areas as is currently the case. “Auckland Council has been resistant to opening up large tracts of land for new residential development for ideological and economic reasons,” he says. “This proposal would actually reinforce its ability to drag the chain.” Other unintended consequences of such a policy would be a lack of interest by private developers and the creation of ‘pop-up slums’. “Few developers are

likely to be interested in projects where the potential for profit is marginal, at best, so the very nature of low-cost housing means that houses would need to be built cheaply to be commercially profitable. “That has consequences for the style of the homes that would be built and the nature of the communities that would emerge.” “There’s every likelihood,” he says, “that land prices in the newly opened-
up areas would simply rise to the levels of other parts of the city. “The best way to address house price inflation in the Auckland housing market is to back measures which quickly increase supply rather than trying to find ever more bizarre ways to artificially reduce prices. “Prices will stabilise when the market finds its own equilibrium. House prices will level off when supply matches demand.”
Efficient bulbs catching on Kiwis have switched on to the benefits of energy efficient light bulbs, with supermarkets selling twice as many as they did five years ago. A quarter of all bulbs sold in supermarkets are now energy efficient varieties, such as LED, CFLs and new generation halogen globes, according to IRI-Aztec MarketEdge. This has trended up steadily from 13 per cent in 2010. LED uptake has been particularly strong, with supermarket sales more than doubling since the same time last year. Energy efficient light bulbs use up to 80 per cent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. These results show that people are now seeing the wisdom of paying a little bit more for a product that will last for several years and save them money over the long term, says Paul Cording, marketing manager at the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). EECA has encouraged people to make the switch since 2009 as part of its goal to help more New Zealanders enjoy the benefits of homes that are warm, dry and energy efficient. Supermarket sales are the tip of the iceberg, he says, with DIY stores anecdotally reporting that sales of energy-efficient LEDs have shot through the roof. “They’re getting great results by focusing on the home building and renovation market, which makes sense when a new house might require at least 40 bulbs.” Having DIY staff on hand to explain the difference also makes a difference as energy efficient lighting is a difficult category to shop for. “People used to think in watts, which measures energy output,” he says. “We now have to think in lumens, which measure the light output or brightness. The EECA reminds shoppers that when switching to an energy efficient bulb, they need to remember the type of base (screw or bayonet), brightness (light output or lumens) and bulb colour (warm or cool white).

TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Parker’s punching power a real knockout I
believe exciting professional boxer Joseph Parker will overcome the biggest challenge of his life and earn a crack at the IBF world heavyweight title held by Anthony Joshua. Tough French-Cameroon fighter Carlos Takam will represent the final hurdle to the 24-year-old Parker’s dream when they clash at Manukau’s Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday week for a purse exceeding $1 million. The winner will challenge Britain’s former Olympic super heavyweight champion Joshua if he successfully defends his recently won IBF title against Dominic Breazeale in London on June 25. The heavily muscled 35-year-old Takam has lost just two of 36 pro fights in an 11-year career and represents a big step up for the exciting Parker who has made a habit of knocking out opponents in quick time. With a 16-0 unbeaten record, Parker has built a

Jodie believes in her new studio Jodie Troughton believes her new dance studio in Pakuranga will stand out from the rest. The South African-born dancer admits that her teaching style is very different from other studios. “I have a lot of fun in all my classes and I make sure that every child is getting the most out of their class,” she says. After selling her first studio in East Auckland and a few years of hunting, Troughton has found her own jewel, Believe Dance Studio, which officially opened on May 4, 2016. “It was a hard call as there are so many dance studios around, however this is my passion and I couldn’t wait any longer,” she says. Although Troughton started dancing later than other dancers, at the age of 15, she sped through with distinction grades and joined the Roodepoort Youth Ballet under the then director of the South African Ballet Theatre, Dirk Badenhorst. “My very first audition as an amateur performer, I was invited back to audition with the professionals, it was the most exciting event of my life up until that point.” After dancing in the opening ceremony for a world summit attended by the South African president and performing as a freelance dancer, a back injury suddenly ended Troughton’s dancing career. It was in the UK, after meeting her husband and having her daughter, that Troughton finally got her ballet teaching certificate. The enthusiastic teacher hopes to inspire young dancers as much as her teacher did. “I know from personal experience that if someone can inspire you as my dance teacher did when I was 15 years old (a late start for someone who wants a dance career), then anything is possible. Long-time Masters athlete Ron Johnson (pictured) has collected another swag of medals from the recent Australian masters Track and Field Championships in Adelaide. Johnson, who turns 84 this month, won six in all with a first in the 1500m walk, first in the javelin and second in the long jump, weight pentathlon, shot put and hammer throw. He was this year named the 2015 NZMA Athlete of the Year in two categories – throws (hammer and javelin) and combined events (throws pentathlon).
Trio off to World Series Howick Pakuranga Baseball players Traye Wildbore, Tui Amosa, and Taylor Irwin will have a taste of international baseball when they head to the 2016 Cal Ripken World Series in Maryland, USA in July. Baseball New Zealand’s National selection panel named a 15-man team for the series as well as seven reserves including William Keal, Hunter Southee, and Cole Joyce from HowickPakuranga. Head Coach Randy Yard (Diamondblacks and former Cincinnati Reds Minor Leaguer) is joined by Diamondblacks pitcher Andrew Marck and former Major League Pitcher and Diamondblacks Bullpen Coach D J Carrasco on the coaching staff. Heimgartner loses clutch Following further development of his new engine, Botany’s Andre Heimgartner was looking forward to applying some new-found speed at Barbagallo Raceway’s Woodstock SuperSprint at the weekend - unfortunately, the racing gods had other ideas. The young Kiwi felt the bite of the notoriously hard-ontyres Barbagallo Raceway during Saturday’s 120km race. Tyre degradation was an issue for a large portion of the field, and with a onestop strategy in play for the 20-year-old Kiwi, the final stages of the race saw the Melbourne resident struggling for control while those with fresher rubber loomed. He held on to be 17th with just five laps remaining and would finish 21st. Fine-tuning to the chassis to help the car look after its tyres better was undertaken overnight, and come Sunday the team were feeling confident of better results on Sunday. However as so often happens in racing, things did not go to plan - Heimgartner would lose the clutch and first gear on the warm-up lap - leaving him stranded on the start-line and hampered throughout the race, most obviously during his three scheduled pit stops. bring the car home straight in 25th. “It was a pretty crazy weekend, but that’s racing and we never give up,” Heimgartner said. ”On both Friday and Saturday the weather was just all over the place, every time we were preparing to go out it seemed to just bucket down. For the race start, for instance, the sun was shining but there we all were on wet tyres racing through puddles because it had poured down as we got ready to go out to the grid,” laughed the young Kiwi. “We played a one-stop strategy on Saturday and we were running pretty well in the final stages, but unfortunately the tyre life really caught up with me and the final five laps in particular
were very tough. “Those who were on a two-stop strategy and therefore had newer tyres were able to take advantage of that.” “I wasn’t too discouraged though, as the car was feeling pretty speedy and I was confident that with some fine-tuning to look after the tyres there was something to be made of it come Sunday.” Sunday’s action kicked off with an incredibly intense qualifying session, with 25 of the 26 entrants covered by just 0.62 of a second. “To have so many cars covered by such a small slice of time really shows how competitive this field is,” said Heimgartner, who qualified 24th. “As far as the race - I lost
the clutch and first gear on warm up and so by the time I actually got going, I was a long way behind the closest car on the track and had a lot of work to do. “Not having first gear really hampered my efforts, but the car still had speed so I pushed on as best as I could. Unfortunately every time I went to the pits it was a bit of an issue, as it was really hard to get out of the pit box without first gear. “We did what we could and brought it home while logging some data and some more experience with the car, with the track, and for me and the crew. This is the way racing goes sometimes so you just have to take away the lessons and look forward - onwards and upwards as they say!”

aint Kentigern College 1st XV launched their title defence against at the weekend with a comfortable 20-3 win over Aorere College.
1st XV rugby kicked off across Auckland at the weekend. Team captains, coaches and principals attended the official launch at Eden Park on Wednesday. Onehunga High School, who won their promotion to the top grade, had a tough first up assignment against Auckland Grammar School, going down 61-0. Macleans went down 12-10 against Avondale, Edgewater beat Southern Cross 15-12 and Howick were crushed 36-7 against Tamaki. 1B teams will play in two pools before splitting into championship and plate grades, while six teams play in the 1C grade. The school girls competition starts on Monday.
