Mythical creatures loved By Marianne Kelly
T
HE STAGE version of a much-loved high fantasy novel is transporting a large cast of children into another magical world. Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre (HCYT) has brought together a cast of 31 to present The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. It is director, Alex Gleed’s, fourth production for HCYT and he says the children, aged from eight to 14, are relishing the portrayal of fantasy animals, mythical creatures such as Centaurs and unicorns. “There is also a combination of animal and human qualities which contribute to the overall cast enjoyment,� he says. “I acted as the Lion, Aslan, about five years ago, so it is interesting seeing it from the other side now. “The kids have really taken to the concept, as they did last year in 101 Dalmations. These plays give an extra level of excitement.� The story revolves around four children, evacuated to a
country mansion from London during World War II. It’s summer when they venture through a wardrobe, only to find the winter wonderland of Narnia on the other side. The wardrobe, Mr Gleed says, is ‘implied offstage� while the set features large trees and dynamic lighting, including lamp lights that work. “The thing that helps the play is the fact that the cast gets along well. “The older ones have been attending classes for a number of years and it comes across on the stage; the chemistry and friendships established offstage.� Carrie Hood, 14, plays one of the children, Susan and says she likes the character “because she’s similar to my own personality. She’s easy to play, she’s responsible and sensible.� The Year 10 Pakuranga College student has been a member of HCYT since she was six and says she has seen the movies and read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe book. “I like the sense of adven-
ture, a land through a wardrobe,� she says. “I am naturally not nervous or scared, but with Susan being so unsure of things, it’s quite a flip in character for me.� Pakuranga College Year 9 student, Juliet Schulz, says she likes Lucy, the character she is playing. “She is very excited all the time and happy to see people. “She’s always so happy and it’s nice to play a happy character. I find it hard when she is sad.� Juliet has been taking HCYT classes since she was six and was eight when she played her first part on the HCYT stage: “I just like acting,� she says. ■■The Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre production of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe is at 7.30pm on March 26 and 27 and at 1pm and 4pm on March 28 and 29, at Harlequin Theatre, 563 Pakuranga Road. ACES light up when she enters the room. Diana Spencer, support teacher at Buckland’s Beach Primary School (BBPS), has noticed a special sparkle in the children’s eyes, the minute Minxue Zhang walks into a class. Ms Zhang is a new Mandarin Language Assistant (MLA) from the award-winning Confucius Institute partnered by the University of Auckland. “We have 57 Mandarin speaking children in our school who have come from China and the way their faces light up on seeing our new MLA is fantastic,” says Ms Spencer, the mentor teacher who assists Minxue in planning her lessons, helping her settle down in a different environment. Confucius Institutes all over the world are non-profit public institutions affiliated with the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Education. Their aim is to promote the Chinese language, as they support Chinese teaching internationally and facilitate a cultural exchange. A month into her New Zealand experience, the 22-year-old language assistant at BBPS and Howick Primary will be staying with Dorothy Bigwood and her husband Ginty Bigwood for an entire year. Minxue is gradually beginning to settle into her new life in a country she has always been enchanted with. There is already a sense of familiarity as both Ms Bigwood and Minxue laugh about the things they don’t have in common. Listening to them share notes about their diametrically opposite food habits, it’s obvious there have been plenty of funny and awkward moments in the past three weeks. “If it’s taught me anything, it is that cultural differences are fascinating and should not be underestimated. “So many world problems can be solved if you can understand it,”

Minxue will first start teaching basic Chinese greetings to the students, followed by activities like craft, drama and songs. “Considering our children will grow up to do trade with China, it is important that they understand and respect the cultural differences,” says Ms Bigwood. “The aim of the programme is for children to learn about Mandarin and Chinese culture. I am thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity of learning a second language to all the students of BBPS. “It will be good for the staff to
gain more cultural understanding as well.” Minxue says that out of 10,000 people who apply, 200 are selected for the Confucius programme that is run in several countries including New Zealand, Australia,

All applicants must have a major in Chinese language and after a year go back to teach in China,” she says. “When I was young, my teacher in China used to say ‘New Zealand is a very beautiful place’. And that’s the reason I’m here. “If I tell the children here about China, they may want to visit the country when they grow up and discover things for themselves — just like I did,” she says.
LOCAL Asian businesses are receiving a helping hand from the police to fight crime. This week sees the fourth and final week of police educational programme Operation Ping’An (Chinese for peace and safety) carried out across the SouthEast Auckland district. Targeted at small businesses, predominantly Asian owned and operated to help deter thefts and robberies, the programme is spearheaded by Counties Manukau Police Asian liaison officer Justin Zeng in tandem with the Asian Council on Reducing Crime (ARC) and the Pakuranga Chinese Association patrol team. A team of officers including constables Martin Kwong, Michael La, Frank Wong and Kevin Son, were deployed to around 300 retail businesses covering areas from Somerville to Manurewa. They collected data from the businesses, held educational seminars, gathered feedback and evaluated the stores for security. Mr Son told the Times that the operation was essentially to equip staff and businesses with tools that help prevent crime. “We’ve distributed things such as a height chart that can help police identify offenders and pamphlets about ways to prevent crime,” he says. “We also educate people on robbery and theft and what they can and cannot do in those situations.” A seminar was held last week at the Counties Manukau East Police headquarters in Ormiston Road, Flat Bush, to help business owners gain a better understanding and overview about New Zealand law and the role of the police. Youths finding their roots A
CHANCE for the youth of one of the oldest religions in the world to find their roots will be on offer in the SuperCity later this year. A turn-out of 300-400 delegates are expected from around the world to attend the 6th World Zoroastrian Youth Congress (WZYC) at Kings College, Otahuhu from next December 28-January 2.
About 1500 Zoroastrians have settled in Auckland with most of them living in the Howick, Pakuranga and Botany area. Their religion is based on the tenets of good thoughts, good words and good deeds. The first known Zoroastrian who migrated to Auckland in 1877 was a businessman who arrived with a Master’s degree from Oxford University, England. Few may be aware of the Zoro-
astrian Diaspora in New Zealand, but its youth have been working tirelessly to organise the WZYC. On the last count, 115 delegates from Australia, UK, USA, Canada, Iran, India and New Zealand had registered for the congress. “This is a first for New Zealand,” says Tinaz Karbahri, president of the Zoroastrian Youth of New Zealand. “It’s overwhelming that despite being such a small community, the
youth are on the brink of pulling off an event of this magnitude. “It’s really exciting that international delegates will arrive here not only for those five days of the congress but will stay back to tour the country.” There will be debates, discussions, professional and social networking and as Tinaz says, “it’s also a great opportunity to find a spouse or partner, also help the youth to find their roots.”

HOWICK and Edgewater colleges are among the 64 schools taking part in the ASB Polyfest this week. Edgewater is performing in division two on the Maori stage tomorrow at 1.05pm, as well as in the Niuean category on Saturday at 1.30pm. Howick competed in the division three Maori group today. There are also Samoan, Tongan, and Cook Islands stages, and 19 cultures will be represented on the diversity stage, including Chinese, Filipino, Korean and Indian. More than 10,000 students will perform over the four days, and it is expected more than 80,000 people will attend the festival, which is the largest Maori and Pacific Island celebration in the world. Event director Theresa Howard says: “The ASB Polyfest provides the opportunity for students and their school communities to come together early in the school year, to learn and share their ideas on interpretation of culture through song, speech and dance.” Polyfest, which costs $5 for adults to enter, runs until Saturday at Manukau Sports Bowl.

NE of the men accused of killing Shalvin Prasad admitted he lied in an interview with police, which was played at the Auckland High Court this week. Shivneel Shahil Kumar (21) and Bryne Permal (22) went on trial early this month charged with the 2013 murder of the Botany Pak’nSave worker. On the day of his death, the Dannemora resident was seen withdrawing $30,050, his life savings, as Kumar looked on. Mr Prasad’s smouldering body was found in McRobbie Road, Franklin. Permal was interrogated by police two weeks after by Detective Warrick Adkin. The jury viewed several hours of the interview video in which Permal said he did not murder Mr Prasad but he held Kumar responsible. He said he had never seen or known Mr Prasad until he saw the news of his death on television. When Mr Prasad’s identity was released to the media, phone records show text messages between the co-accused discussing the news and asking if they were “good�. Questioned by what was meant in the texts, Permal in the interview spent minutes in silence and said he couldn’t recall. He again remained silent when Mr Adkin asked him about the conversation recorded by police in Kumar’s car in which they said there was no proof of burning and

Air quality law review
A review of regulations governing the management of air quality in New Zealand has been welcomed by Auckland Council. Dr Jan Wright, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, says the country’s air quality is generally good, but the regulations need to be updated because of recent scientific advances. This includes the need to measure particulate matter in the air that is more harmful to human health in the long-term. The update may affect the need for an air quality bylaw to meet the Government’s current national air standards which monitors short-term effects of particulate matter only. Last year the council proposed an air quality bylaw as a way of meeting the national standards, as all councils are required to do. Since that time, members of its staff have met government officials in Wellington to discuss the nature and scale of air pollution in Auckland and the effect of the current national standards. Councillor Calum Penrose, who chairs the Regulatory and Bylaws Committee, says a key issue raised by the Commissioner is that the New Zealand standard for air pollution is based on short-term exposure to particulate matter. But longterm exposure needs to be considered because of its greater health effects. Monitoring from man-made sources will give a clearer understanding of the long-term effects on public health. “Auckland Council has also raised this same issue and welcomes the Commissioner’s recommendation to Parliament to review the current air quality rules,� he says. The council monitors natural and manmade sources of particulate matter, but also long-term exposure which gives a clearer picture of the pollution caused by man-made sources, such as combustion in domestic heating appliances, motor vehicles and industrial processes. Implications of the report will be presented to the council’s Regulatory and Bylaws Committee on April 1.

SKILLED Migrant Category (SMC) residence approvals increased by 12 per cent in the 2013/2014 year after showing decreases for the previous four years, according to the 14th annual Migration Trends and Outlook report. More than 20,000 people were approved residence under SMC last year. Meanwhile there was an 18 per cent increase in the number of Essential Skills workers, the second consecutive increase since the start of the GFC (global ďŹ nancial crisis). Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse is also encouraged to see a 15 per cent increase in the number of international students approved to study in New Zealand. March 16: Howick will have a chance to see a lasting legacy of the old borough council when the squadron bestowed with the “Freedom of Howick� marches through town on March 25. The charter was given to the 4th Main Headquarters Signal Squadron in 1982 in recognition of its close association with the Howick RSA. The squadron has attended Howick’s Anzac Day Parade since 1967. Since being granted the charter, the 4th squadron has been renamed 5 Signal Squadron and has been relocated several times, but has still exercised its right to march through Howick on a number of occasions. It is now located at the RNZAF Base at Whenuapai and provides specialist communications support to New Zealand Defence Forces.

THE months of training competitors have spent preparing for the Auckland Half Iron multisport event is put to the test this Saturday. Starting at Maraetai Beach for a 2-kilometre swim, the entrants then set off on a 90km cycle through Clevedon to Kaiaua on the Firth of Thames, and back to Kawakawa Bay. From there, the 21km run heads to the northern-most point of the picturesque coast road and back along the foreshore of the Hauraki Gulf for three laps. The race gets under way at 8.30am, with the first cyclists expected at Kawakawa Bay for the run at 10.45am. The leaders will finish around 12.15pm and race cut-off is at 5pm.

secured the lucrative contract to supply our coppers with new Australian-type wide-brimmed felt hats. “We’re very proud of the new hats,� says Mr Dalton of the headgear which replaces the service caps and helmets the police have worn for many years. “We hand-styled the design especially for the police. I had to send overseas to have the manufacturing blocks made and the fur felt comes all the way from Czechoslovakia.� Mr Dalton’s firm, The Hat Factory Ltd, with manufacturing plants in Mt Wellington and Lower Hutt and a product range including Air New Zealand and New Zealand Army headgear, fashion millinery and baseball caps, also secured a refurbishment contract. The name Mr Dalton has coined for the hats, which provide better protection from sun and rain than the service caps his company and another hat firm used to supply, is Peelers, after the founder of the British police form Robert Peel. But Mr Dalton admits to feeling a little miffed that some of the publicity surrounding the changeover to the new-style
headgear referred to them as Akubra hats. Akubra is a rival manufacturer and played no part in the newly secured contract.

Apparently the society is keen to bowl other entrants in a national “most improved toilet� competition! The society with links to Manukau City Council’s chain of office, wants to splash out on a public toilet block with the potential to pick up a good odour prize – after a bit of a spruce up. Cockle Bay’s toilets were the initial pick of the society. But the entry was blocked when it was learned they were in the running to be replaced with a brand new facility in the next financial year (subject to public consultation and full council approval). Who said it couldn’t be luxurious and comfortable? Sue Fairbairn shares her experience on a Globus Tour which revealed a new perspective to coach touring

HAD always assumed that travelling around Europe on a bus would entail being uncomfortable, cramped and having to drag my bags on and off the bus at each destination. However my travel consultant at Harvey World Travel assured me that this was not the case and encouraged me to take the tour. So it transpired that Harvey World Travel was right again and I was wrong. When my daughter (23) and I embarked on a Globus Tour, right from the start everything was easy. With the details taken care of before we set off, and the first steps onto our luxury coach confirmed, with the help of Harvey World Travel, we had made the perfect choice.
1. Rome
Harvey World Travel told me that Globus was first-class in touring and the service was impeccable; this was made apparent as soon as we arrived in Rome, the departure city for our tour. We were taken to our hotel, Star Hotels Michelangelo, which was a great prelude to the high quality accommodation that would make up the entire journey. Staying in a beautiful place located just moments from the magnificent Vatican City set our expectations for what was to come. Sightseeing and a local guide were included at each stop, and in Rome this provided VIP access into the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Colosseum and much more. The following day when we boarded our luxury coach we met our very experienced and welcoming tour director and also our driver who both made us feel we were in safe hands. This was quickly proven true as we made our way through the chaotic traffic of Rome at peak hour – Mamma Mia!!
2. Florence
With the traffic a distant memory, the coach journey from Rome to Florence was a true highlight,

FLORENCE
After bidding farewell to our luxury coach we prepared to travel on the high-speed Eurostar train. It was a quick way to change continents and gave us time to plan for the final stop of our tour – London! With two nights there we had so much to see... the London Eye, West End shows, Big Ben as well as experiencing the London Black Cabs and famous London underground. Globus even had local hosts in a dedicated Globus area of the hotel to help with all the elements of our stay. Globus were a fantastic tour company to travel with. They had covered everything we needed to take the hassle out of travel. Arriving at each destination with nothing to think about except what to see, do and explore first made it a real holiday. Memo to self – trust your travel agent.

Our tour director kept us informed as we sat back in our spacious seats with plenty of room to stretch our legs and lap up the magnificent scenery in total comfort. Florence was full of historic highlights which we discovered on a walking tour with our local guide. The most amazing experience on this particular tour was visiting The Academy of Fine Arts. We didn’t have to wait in any lines for tickets and were taken straight inside to view the works of some of the world’s greatest artists, including the original David by Michelangelo.
3. Venice
The journey to Venice was yet another pleasant and relaxing experience thanks to regular stops for refreshments and photo opportunities. Upon arrival our tour director once again handled everything and our luggage was already in our room when we arrived. Not having to carry a single thing had already made such a difference to our tour and after several days spent on our feet it was an even more priceless service! After enjoying sightseeing and gliding through the canals on an optional Gondola ride we had time to find the best pizzeria in town, a must do for any Italian holiday. It was also a real benefit that breakfast was included daily as well as some evening meals. We also had the flexibility to venture out alone on other evenings to sample local cuisine.
4. Lucerne
At this stage our expectations of coach touring had been blown out of the water. We were very impressed and always looked forward to embarking on our next adventure. On arrival in the stunning Swiss city of Lucerne we were in awe of its beauty. After completing our walking tour and gathering our bearings we set off to make the most of our free time. We took a stroll along the lake-side promenade and meandered through the cobbled streets and markets. The one thing we will always remember is joining the optional excursion to take a cable car ride up Mt Pilatus to embrace the unbelievable Swiss Alps and city below – a must-do!

5. Paris
Paris Je t’aime! I had always dreamed of visiting the Eiffel Tower by day and watching it sparkle at night but had heard that queues were a guaranteed problem; not with Globus! When we arrived at the Eiffel Tower on our included Paris sightseeing tour, sure enough there was a huge queue. Thanks to our local guide we went straight to the front. I will never forget this lifelong dream coming true with no stress at all. We also enjoyed free time in Paris which allowed us to explore parks, cafes, shops and the French way of life, before making our way back to our hotel with a baguette and bottle of wine in hand.

School is 10 years old! School community celebrates

A real feature of our school is the creation of a truly shared vision, with the staff, students and parents involved while I stepped away.� Ms Wilson is also surprised to find that in creating a baby wall, 40-50 photos of babies born to staff members in the time the school has been open have been mounted.

TEN years of a shared community vision will be celebrated when Baverstock Oaks School marks a special anniversary. Establishment and current principal, Mary Wilson says the school has always been “very much a family place with a lot of enthusiasm�. “A lot of people have left and come back.� Numbers attending the 10th birthday celebrations next Friday, March 27, Include 720 past students, with staff members bringing the total to 800. “So we could have upwards of 2000 people coming; there is a lot of interest,� Ms Wilson says. Past board members, including those from the school’s establishment board will attend. A filmed message from one of the establishment board members, former Botany Downs Secondary Col-
lege principal, Mike Leach, now principal at King’s College, will be shown. He says it’s rare to find a school organisation based around a vision and core values which encompass the entire community. Two of the three original fiveyear-old new entrants, Ethan de Lacey-Thompson and Jeri Law have been tracked down and will cut the birthday cake. Each of the school’s seven whanau will present an item on one or more of the school’s core values and their artworks will be on display. An archive in the school hall will

Autumn series runs A
UDIENCES have been building in what promises to be an exciting run of concerts in the autumn series of Thursdays @ Steven at All Saints Church, Howick. The series, coordinated by Katharine and Peter Watts, has been running for 15 years and each year offers 21 performances by outstanding classical musicians. Last week the Times inadvertently published details of the wrong autumn programme. Here is the current one starting with tonight. One of New Zealand’s leading trumpet soloists, Bill Stoneham, will join with Timothy Noon, director of music at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral, on piano. Their programme, Carnival includes music by Mozart, Faure and Gershwin, a showcase of the glories of the trumpet repertoire. Pianist, Matteo Napoli returns on March 26 with regular performers EkleKKtika. He will perform

Icelandic soprano, Hrafnhildur Bjornsdottir, and English pianist, Martyn Parkes are currently touring Australia and New Zealand. They will give a recital on April 9 featuring works of Debussy and Strauss. The newly-formed New Zealand Youth Brass Ensemble, bringing together leading young brass players from around the country, will perform on April 16. Their youthful enthusiasm is sure to captivate as they tackle Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Shostakovich’s Festive Overture in arrangements for brass ensemble. A bonus concert will be held on May 9 when the Auckland Youth Orchestra performs Dvorak’s Symphony No 9 (From the New World). Concerts are at 7-8pm and admission is by donation at the door. More than a magical fairytale THE bubbly, bright music of Rossini’s classic Cinderella fantasy story is on its way to opera lovers. New Zealand Opera’s upcoming production of the beloved fairytale-opera, La cenerentola, is based on the original Grimm brothers’ fairytale which ran the gamut from cruelty to candy. Designer Dan Potra has created a Dickensian chocolate box set for the production that reects the romantic side of La cenerentola. There’s an Olde Curiosity Shoppe, allusions to the gardens of Brideshead Revisited’s Castle Howard, and a nod towards Downton Abbey, where the servants are not always what they seem. Director Lindy Hume says Charles Dickens, with his themes of social justice, was popular shortly after Rossini wrote Cinderella, “so it’s fairly easy to stay in that world; there’s some politics in

Rossini’s magically mischievous music tells a human story of kindness, forgiveness and generosity, while Ms Hume does not shy away from the ďŹ rmer themes of fairness, and cruelty against goodness. My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. Differences in coaching A UNIVERSITY research project has explored the different visions among rugby coaches from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The comparative research study by sports and physical education doctoral student RĂŠmy Hassanin and supervised by University of Canterbury’s Professor Richard Light investigated how coaches foster players, succeed in coaching and develop values among their players. Hassanin says New Zealand coaches felt they cared about their players, both on and off the ďŹ eld. They viewed them as people and rugby players. “The Australians felt that they needed to empower the players to think for themselves. They saw themselves as teachers who were personable yet responsible for setting the direction of the team. “However, the South African coaches felt they needed to be strong leaders. “They established a position of authority and felt, more importantly, that they needed to be respected, not liked, by the players. “The New Zealanders believed that coaching required many different hats and often referred to good cop - bad cop scenarios. “While they viewed their relationships and players as equals, they clearly set boundaries to be effective leaders. “Also speciďŹ c to New Zealand was the importance placed on rituals such as the pre and post-game processes and, more importantly, fostering a belonging as a club and at the clubhouse. “The Australians viewed themselves as man-managers, selling their ideas to the players which results in more managerial attitudes to the practice of coaching. “The South Africans felt that harnessing respect and instilling discipline was the most important role of the coach. “Due to professionalism, club rugby is bypassed in South Africa as a potential pathway to higher representative honours. As a result, they felt that players who were subservient and loyal to the coach and club would be more successful.â€?

Fight to stave off relegation HOWICK Pakuranga Cricket Club’s last-ditch effort to stay in the top flight of Auckland’s premier two-day competition starts on Saturday. With two wins and seven losses this season, Howick Pakuranga is at the bottom of the Hedley Howarth Trophy two-day major championship. Against East Coast Bays in the penultimate round, Howick Pakuranga lost on first innings after being unable to chase 282 on the second day. Shawn Hicks top-scored for Howick Pakuranga with 68. On day one, Jamie Brown was the pick of Howick Pakuranga’s bowlers with figures of 4-46 from 20 overs. In the final round, Howick Pakuranga face Papatoetoe, who are more than 10 points ahead in secondlast place. There are a number of outcomes which would see Howick Pakuranga make up the deficit, and avoid relegation to the Tom Hellaby minor championship. A first-innings lead provides 12 competition points and an outright win is worth eight. Each run accumulates 0.02 points and each wicket gives 0.5. “I had a reality check. I had a moment where I acknowledged all the adrenaline and energy and really embraced it as my most loved feeling. I told my coach, Hamish Robertson, ‘I got this’ and went out there and changed up my tempo.” In the second minute of round two, Ting seized his chance to end the bout with a guillotine choke. The manoeuvre involves using the arms to encircle the opponent’s neck in a fashion similar to a guillotine, restricting air flow to the lungs and blood flow to the head. “I approached the second round with a higher intensity which caused an early scramble and exposed Cary’s neck while he was trying to stand up. “From there I locked on to a high percentage submission move and was able to lock it on tight and finish it.” It was the first time Ting has used the tactic to make an opponent submit. “I would’ve preferred to finish the fight standing up but the opportunity came for the choke and I had to go for it. I could’ve and should’ve done better and finished it in the first round.” The result improves Ting’s professional record to 9-2, with three wins in the One Championship, Asia’s largest MMA promoter. “I would love to have a good honest run at the title. I feel I am two to three fights away from that shot so it is just a matter of going back into the gym and not bloat up to a heavyweight like I have in the past.”

AKURANGA’S Ev Ting is one step closer to his dream of fighting for a mixed martial arts (MMA) championship. Ting, who trains at Auckland MMA, triumphed in his featherweight battle with Filipino Cary Bullos in the Age of Champions event in Malaysia last Friday. “Going into this fight, I knew I would be in heavy transactions of leather and bones,” Ting told the Times. “I knew I had to stand my ground and show no weakness.” Bullos, with seven wins and two losses prior to the match-up, is renowned as a fierce stand-up fighter whose punching power has led to three of his victories. “Cary Bullos is very underrated and I still consider him as one of the most dangerous fighters in the division,” says Ting. “My fight plan is always the same, which is to set up finishing combos or strikes through good timing, ideally causing them to be off-beat which will allow me to capitalise.” In the opening five-minute round, Ting was more aggressive, but Bullos got the upper hand with sharp counter-attacking. “The feeling out process did not last very long,” says Ting. “We were both loading up one-two strike combos to knock each other out. I feel although I was dominating the cage, Cary was landing more significant shots.” Ting made the necessary adjustments in his corner between rounds.
