HE students of Botany Downs Primary School were euphoric when they heard they’d won $5000. They were even more fuelled up when they saw Mrs Weet-Bix strut into the school assembly dressed in an ensemble created out of the Weet-Bix cartons. Mrs Weet-Bix who walked in with a paper skirt, handbag, a top hat and jandals all from the Weet-Bix packaging happens to be a devoted school parent. Melanie Nankivell, mother of Blake, 6, Connor, 8 and Rohnan, 10, played a big role in encouraging the Botany Downs Primary School students to win the New Zealand-wide Weet-Bix Kids TYRathlon Vote4-
Schools competition. Going from the excitement it had garnered it was obvious that the makers of the kids’ cereal since 1928 know how to get the children all buzzed up about the Kiwi breakfast. The challenge was open to small, medium and large schools. A look at the Botany Downs Primary School’s facebook page shows that momentum to the competition was steadily built up. It said: All you have to do when you buy a specially marked WeetBix cereal Triathlon 750g or one kilogramme box is to ďŹ nd the special code on the inside ap. Then go to their [Weet-Bix] website and enter school name, Botany Downs School, your name and contact number and the special code. The marketing ploy worked! As
far as the students are concerned it was all about winning hard cash for the school. A well-made power point presentation by the students was screened at the assembly conducted by the children. Interesting facts, such as Sir Edmund Hillary ate Weet-Bix during his historic climb up Mt Everest in 1953, were gleefully presented. An entertaining video ďŹ lm created by the talented students was also showcased. It had the ofďŹ cials from Sanitarium sit up and take notice. Plenty of spot prizes had the children beaming from ear to ear. The enthusiasm was infectious as they cheered so loud that Ms Nankivell was convinced “people at the Sanitarium ofďŹ ce could hear them!â€? The roar of victory was deafening!

Parents who bought enough stock of the breakfast cereal to last them for years had a big part to play in the competition win. Some of them said they would donate the packets to charity. “Every box counts,� said Ms Nankivell who was closely watching the score on the leader board. “We won in the large school category of 399-plus students by a narrow margin to Opaheke School, Papakura. We were just up by 16 codes.� The school retook the lead just 15 minutes before the competition closed at midnight! Principal Bruce Trezise said the money would go towards buying sports equipment for the school so that the children could keep active and healthy.

THE Beachlands community is grieving for the loss of a young man following a car crash on Whitford-Maraetai Road on Tuesday. A police ofďŹ cer on his way to work at around 6am was the ďŹ rst at the scene of the crash and alerted emergency services which included the Counties Manukau Police serious crash unit, the Beachlands volunteer ďŹ re brigade and St Johns Ambulance paramedics. Klay Huxtable, 28, who was driving a grey Toyota Starlet was conďŹ rmed dead at the scene. The other driver Nikki Retford (35) was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Mrs Retford was driving a black 4WD Dodge Journey, which received relatively minor damage in the crash. News media said the woman driving the Dodge was a motherof-three who described seeing headlights swerve on to her side of the road moments before the two cars collided. Counties Manukau Police Serious Crash Unit is continuing its investigation. Police are interested to hear from anyone who may have seen the two vehicles involved at any time prior to the crash, on the Whitford-Maraetai Road or surrounds. “The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but we will be considering speed and alcohol as possible factors,â€? says serious crash investigator, constable Amy Weston. “Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Huxtable at this difďŹ cult time.â€? The funeral for Mr Huxtable will be held at the Manukau Memorial Gardens at 11am this Saturday.

EETING some of the most outstanding students, teachers and school leaders in the last nine months has been a steep learning curve. Covering the education beat at the Times has opened doorways and given me an insight into the minds of powerful change-makers and high-achieving leaders who help shape destinies. The shifting dynamics of the student-teacher relationship has been an area of interest that continues to fascinate. The fact that a teacher is not anymore at the centre of the stage but at the side to assist the i-generation has been quite a revelation! But above all, I’ve discovered that the schools in the suburb have a sterling line-up of principals who relentlessly strive to achieve extremely high levels of excellence. Meeting some of the evolved heads of school has been an inspiring study in different leadership styles – from fostering a sense of a close-knit community, alternated by a family-oriented style of functioning to being

However, if there’s one thing that has got me a bit concerned lately is the number of principals resigning or playing musical chairs after a long and successful stint in their careers. I must admit, I’ve been out of breath catching up with interviewing the outgoing and incoming principals in local schools. Have you, like me wondered why so many devoted and dedicated principals are suddenly throwing in the towel? There’s too much compliance with ERO reports and paper work these days, recently conďŹ ded one of the school leaders who has just put in her resignation letter. She explained how when most principals in the area were appointed 12-15 years ago, their focus was mainly on teachers and children. It didn’t revolve around ďŹ ling heaps of reports. A new principal on the block revealed that three to four years ago there was not a single vacancy in the schools for the post of a principal but now there’s a choice! It may have something to do

with the downturn of economy and no one wanting to leave their jobs then, he pointed out. It takes ďŹ ve years to see the result of change that a school leader has initiated. And 10 years for the cycle to be complete.
Most retiring school heads probably belong to that category. They truly believe they’ve contributed everything they could to the school and it’s now time to move on. Or better still, go ďŹ shing!

NCREASING school children’s interest, coupled with generous sponsorship, is expected to make an annual fun walk and run bigger and better this year. And it’s not confined to the young and the fit. The annual Howick Fun Walk and Run, on March 22, lends itself to a chance for the kids to run and the oldies to take a leisurely hour-and-a-quarter walk around the 8.5-kilometre course starting and finishing at Stockade Hill. The event was born 10 years ago, thanks to the enthusiasm of Judy Pascoe of the Crawford Medical Centre who wanted to see people walk or run and keep fit. It was initially known as the Crawford Fun Run. Howick Rotary joined the effort and for the past four years has organised the event with continued assistance from Ms Pascoe and Shirley Curtiss, of Curtiss & Spence. Initially most of the funds came from Rotary Charitable Trusts. However, over the past two years the level of independent sponsorship has increased and has been boosted this year with a $2800 grant from the Howick Local Board. Local intermediate and primary schools have embraced the event over the past two years, says Colin Monk, of the Rotary organising committee. As a result this year a cup, sponsored by the Crawford Medical Centre, will be presented to the intermediate and primary school teams. Medallions will also be presented to all the primary and intermediate school entrants. Sponsors of the past two years, Mitre 10 Mega and Dilmah Tea, are joined this year by Les Mills,
A car taken for a high speed joyride from Maraetai to Dannemora has left its owner baffled. Maraetai resident Rhys Van der Waardt says his black Nissan Silvia S13 parked on his Te Pene Road driveway was stolen at 6.50am on Monday. “It was parked two metres from where my parents were sleeping and they heard it leave,” he told the Times. Despite having a reliable car alarm, the thieves were able to disarm it and there was no sound of them breaking into the car, he says. “My next door neighbour had been out for a run and he came back just as the car was leaving. Another next door neighbour who’d been filling his car with timber didn’t see the car until it was gunning it off from my house.” The car enthusiast immediately posted an appeal for sightings on facebook, and several online forums. Within a matter of hours, he received hundreds of responses. “Social media’s played a huge role in recovering the car. Especially when you’re dealing with a place like Auckland, a car could be anywhere within 20 minutes.” Half an hour later, Mr Van der Waardt’s vehicle was found by a resident in Kilkenny Drive, Dannemora, who saw three people in the car. Mr Van der Waardt says it was “half parked on his driveway and half in the middle of the road”. He says according to reports from police and an eyewitness, the thieves moved on, stealing a blue Subaru WRX in the same street, which is still missing. His car was forensically examined by police and released to him this week. Mr Van der Waardt says his newly refurbished car looked “pretty buggered” after the incident. “I literally finished a full restoration about a week ago.” People with information can phone senior sergeant Mike Schmidt on 250-2849, or the Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800-555-111.

Special deals in the lead-up to the event are being provided by Les Mills Howick fitness centre while Velca will be on site to provide warm-up exercises on the day. Coastguard Howick is again the recipient of proceeds from the event and about 15 Coastguard personnel, along with Rotary Club members and their partners, will assist the organising committee with marshalling duties around the course. One of the watering points will be manned by a team from Les Mills Howick. Coastguard will use the money raised to upgrade life jackets for its rescue craft. Coastguard Howick president,
Ian Gibson says proceeds from the event have become a regular contribution, “one that we rely on and we are very pleased to receive the funds. “It costs us a lot to run the organisation and it’s great to receive from Howick Rotary.” Having a presence at the event, he says, is a good way of making people more aware of Coastguard’s work on the water. “It’s good for our guys to be standing around talking to people. A lot don’t appreciate that we are volunteers, using our spare time to help out.” Mr Monk says the event is one of the club’s key events. “It provides fitness for the community and raises money for Coastguard. It’s a win win,” he says. “The support of all the sponsors is greatly appreciated.” Other Rotary events held throughout the year are its popular
Bookarama and the annual yacht regatta, run in conjunction with Half Moon Bay Rotary Club. This year’s regatta is tomorrow and, since its inception 29 years ago, has raised more than $1.5 million with the major beneficiary in recent years being the Child Cancer Foundation.

The Howick Fun Walk and Run will start at 9am on March 22 at Stockade Hill. The entry fee is $10 for adults, children $2 and school teams of four $5. Before the walk the MC will explain the order of proceedings and health and safety requirements. Accused spending tracked across town after killing

HE two men accused of Shalvin Prasad’s murder went on a “spending spree” which wasn’t limited to Auckland, but reached as far north as Waiwera, argued the Crown at the Auckland High Court this week. Early this week the jury at the trial of Shivneel Shahil Kumar (21) and Bryne Permal (22) heard that hundreds of transactions took place in the days after the burning and killing of Mr Prasad in 2013. Crown witness, detective Simon Taylor, detailed the bank records of the pair showing transactions at a variety of fast food joints, a massage parlour in Greenlane, Central Auckland, liquor stores and online game stores as well as the Waiwera Thermal Resort, north of Auckland. James Raju, a mutual friend of Mr Prasad and the duo, was called to the witness stand on Monday. Mr Raju said he bumped into Kumar two days after the alleged murder at the Bond and Bond store where the accused bought a computer, printer and several CDs. He said Kumar showed off a new tattoo and car stereo and mentioned buying a rental property in Piha. Mr Raju had no knowledge of Kumar having stable employment in the time he knew him. Texts were read out in court, including one alleged by the Crown as a “bogus” text sent by Kumar to Mr Prasad’s phone offering his condolences. The trial continues in front of Justice Geoffrey Venning and a jury of six men and six women at the Auckland High Court.

Busway a step closer D
ESIGN plans for a busway from Panmure to Pakuranga are nearing finalisation. Information has been sent to people in the project area to get feedback before consents are lodged in late April for the busway which is part of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI). Construction on the key project, the Panmure rail station to Pakuranga town centre section of the South Eastern Busway, is expected to start in 2017, Auckland Transport (AT) says. It’s due to open by 2021. AT also announced recently that it aimed to open the full busway to Botany by 2024, four years earlier than previously planned, and extend bus lanes to Highland Park. The Panmure to Pakuranga projects include replacing the Panmure roundabout with an intersection with traffic lights and more direct pedestrian crossings. The Panmure to Pakuranga busway will run in lanes separate from traffic congestion on Pakuranga Road and cycle and foot paths will also be separate from traffic. A second Panmure Bridge will be built for the busway and a shared cycle/foot path. Large numbers of new passengers will be attracted by buses travelling on congestion-free lanes every five to 10 minutes between Panmure and Pakuranga, says Peter King,

AT’s AMETI programme director. “Buses currently get caught in the same congestion as cars, meaning people have limited choice,� he says. “Providing a quicker, frequent and more reliable option is expected to shift large numbers out of cars to ease pressure on the roads for journeys that can’t be made by public transport.� Recent experience with the new Panmure rail station and electric trains, he says, shows significant growth comes with higher quality public transport. “Another feature is separated

Getting teens out in wild OUTDOOR recreation is one avenue Mike Turinksy uses to teach young men essential life skills. Mr Turinsky is the chief executive of youth work organisation Young Life NZ Trust based in East Auckland. Each year, the trust runs a wilderness camp, for college-age boys to attend. This time around, 15 pupils from Botany Downs Secondary and Pakuranga colleges headed to Kaipara Harbour in Northland for a five-day fishing, hunting and tramping excursion. “The camp is a life skills and mentoring programme designed to get teenagers out in the bush, develop positive relationships with their peers, healthy connections with adults and working on goals,� says Turinsky. “The boys learn how to prepare their own meals, handle boats, water safety, fishing, processing their catch, team building and more.� Turinsky is originally from Alaska, USA, which provided a vastly different upbringing to what teenagers are now exposed to. “I didn’t grow up with

two years running. The favourite part of his latest outing was shooting, and eating, his first deer. “One of the key things we try to instill is appreciation for the environment, and respect for the fish and animals we catch,� says Turinski. There is no criteria for a place on the camp, which is sponsored by Top Catch fishing shop in Half Moon Bay, by providing equipment and bait.

Song raises funds for violent crime victims I
N NOVEMBER last year the Times published a story about Malcolm Gordon’s support for the Guardian Angel campaign and his relationship with the children at Glen Innes School. As a result, the singer-songwriter donated $1375 from his song Hey Stranger to help the victims of family violence. The lead single on Gordon’s album The Cobbler’s Grandson was commissioned by Family Works, a charitable organisation which provides social services for at-risk children and families. Glen Innes School pupils joined in the final chorus of the song, which is written from the perspective of an abused child who feels
invisible. The album reached the top 10 of the NZ Album charts and number one on the iTunes charts in the week it was released. Gordon said he was really excited to see the way people responded to the songs, particularly Hey Stranger. “I’m profoundly grateful for the copies we’ve sold, the awareness we’ve raised, and the attitudes that have been changed. Family Works provides counselling and social services for more than 40 people a day and 15,200 a year. They help those who are dealing with violence, poverty, parenting issues and stress.
“It’s so important that we have kids growing up in safe families, and parents being given the kind of support to build those safe families. It’s been one of the biggest privileges of my careers as a musician to work on this appeal alongside Family Works,” he said. Apart from the album sales, Gordon said he was delighted with the way choirs around the country picked up on the song. It was sung in Dunedin, Blenheim and Hawke’s Bay at Christmas church services and concerts. “It was pretty humbling to see the song take on a life of its own,” he said. March 6, 1978: A 32-year old Howick lawyer, Mr Winston Peters, will be the National Party candidate for the Hunua Electorate in the forthcoming general election. Mr Peters stood as National candidate for the Northern Maori seat in 1975 against Mr Rata. He started out as a primary and secondary school teacher before studying law. March 6: Cycling fanatic Bob de Jong is a man on a mission. The 65 year old plans to cycle the length of the South Island raising money for developing countries. The Dutchman from Bucklands Beach plans to leave Picton in 10 days time, and arrive in Bluff 10 to 12 days later, travelling the 1000km on a brand new 21 speed cycle donated by the Howick Mower and Cycle Centre. The funds raised, through people giving money for every kilometre cycled, will go towards supporting churches and pioneer works in Vietnam and the African countries of Uganda and Ghana.

WO Howick College science teachers have been named Microsoft Innovative Educators, an award given to select educators using digital technology to improve learning outcomes. Steve Martin and Ruby Huang were considered visionary thought leaders as the result of a project they devised for Year 9 students. The exercise made use of technology to investigate and present the science of food nutrition. Microsoft Innovative Educators are chosen from about 30,000 applicants around the world, after they submit their learning activity and supporting documentation. The Howick teachers are now considered Global Experts and contribute to an international education community which shares ideas and innovations to advance teaching and learning. It’s the second time Mr Martin, who is head of science at the college, has received the award. The aim of the Food for Life project was to investigate and consider, in a scientific manner, the state of children going to school on an empty stomach. Students in the Year 9 Netbook classes were asked to create and develop a nutritious and balanced food parcel to donate to the Howick Salvation Army.

With a reputation for technical expertise, reliability and quality service in all facets of the marine electrical industry, their work covers trailer boats through to luxury launches and yachts. The company carries out installations, repairs, fitting and work on solar-charging units. In addition, the business deals with all types of cars from small Japanese models to the large and prestigious European marques, including BMW/Mini, Audi VW, Mercedes and others. Recently, a very classy purple 1970 Dodge Charger was attracting a lot of attention outside the workshop. This is another interesting arm of the business – the mechanics particularly enjoy working on classic cars and hot rods and have a solid reputation in this specialised work. The business also has its own special line of batteries under the brand of DMS Batteries, these being made to order for the Howick Auto Centre’s workshop. Howick Auto recommends service intervals
to clients and sends reminders. Dion heartily recommends clients should have their vehicles serviced regularly. For example, he says a car’s airconditioning system should be serviced every two years. Replacement of a receiver dryer filter will halt corrosion and damage to seals and this can prevent leaks and improve the cooling system. “Many people believe their airconditioning has stopped working because it has just run out of gas, but this may not be the case. An air-conditioning system should not need re-gassing because the system is factory sealed. If the gas has gone there is usually a leak in the system and fixing it could be as straightforward as replacing a small o-ring.” Craig says as car manufacturers find new and innovative ways to build
cars, the ability for people to fix their own cars is becoming a thing of the past and the need for an up-to-date workshop is becoming a must. “We understand that vehicle servicing is a necessary evil and we like to keep the stress out of it for all our customers,” Craig says. What’s more, when people get a WOF for their vehicle from this team, they can be sure they’re driving a safe car as the Howick Auto Centre team is meticulous about safety. “Howick Auto Centre has its own diagnostic brake rolling machine, which will always go on to check the wheel alignment and shock absorbers. We always do it properly and pride ourselves on our safety,” Craig says. “At Howick Auto it’s not just about getting the pass on the WOF, it’s about certifying a safe vehicle or advising the repairs to get your vehi-
cle up to the national standard.’ Both Craig and Dion are Howick locals, and they enjoy the friendships fostered by dealing with Howickians. “We provide a breakdown service and will happily pick up a local customer and deliver them back home if they are having work done on their cars.” All staff members are warm and welcoming. And that’s evident from the first phone call to the team’s bubbly receptionist, Tammy Leher. She’s adept at making customers feel totally at home. Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
• 2 egg whites • ½ red chilli, diced, no seeds, (optional) • 125g white button mushrooms, ďŹ nely diced • 2 Pam’s Fresh Express Courgettes, grated • 3-4 Greater Good Mini Carrots, grated • ½ Superb Herb Coriander, chopped • 400g Tarakihi ďŹ llets • 120gm Pam’s Fresh Express Baby Rocket • 125g Meadowfresh Sour Cream
Also need: olive oil, cornour/our, baking powder, cold water (ďŹ zzy if possible), salt and pepper.
Method:
Make the batter by mixing ½ cup water, 1 cup cornour/our, 2 egg whites, and ½ tsp baking powder. If too runny add 1 tb more of cornour. Season well. Add chilli, more if you like it hot. Mix batter with vegetables and the coriander. Heat the oil in a pan on medium/ high heat. Cook the fritters – 1 heaped tablespoon of mix which will spread to make a at pattie.
Drain on paper towel when cooked. Season the ďŹ sh and while the fritters are cooking either grill or pan fry the ďŹ sh. Serve the ďŹ sh on the patties layered with rocket and sour cream. ➤ AND MORE: You can use lettuce instead of rocket. Freeze the egg yolks to use another time. Write the quantity, on the container. To make a quick salad for dinner tomorrow ďŹ nely slice or grate the leftover vegetables. Make a dressing by mixing vinaigrette with the coriander, ½ tsp mustard and 1 tsp honey. Season.

HE popular Thursdays @ Seven concerts at All Saints Church, Howick, has a feast of talent in the latest series. The autumn series, coordinated by Katharine and Peter Watts, has been running for 15 years and each year offers 21 performances by outstanding classical musicians. Concerts between now and April 10 feature a string quartet, trumpet, piano solo, wind quintet and a newly-formed national brass ensemble, along with the Auckland Youth Orchestra. Italian pianist Matteo Napoli will perform Chopin’s First Piano Concerto on March 20. Concertgoers will also hear the rarelyheard string quintet version of the concerto. A bonus performance at 2pm on March 23 is the return of ScottishAustralian tenor David Hamilton

present Menagerie on March 27. The central work is a witty new setting by Bob Chilcott of favourite tales from Aesop’s Fables. The music of Beethoven’s pupil, Ferdinand Ries, features in a concert presented by Lisa Chung and Rosemary Barnes on cello and piano on April 3. It includes the Sonata for Cello and Piano. Husband and wife team Lilia Carpinelli and Matteo Napoli will conclude the series on April 10 with an evening of operatic music for voice and piano. The programme ranges from Vivaldi to Puccini, including favourites Piangero (Handel), O mio babbino caro and Un bel di (Puccini). Off to Hollywood and Disneyland UP-AND-COMING dancers are being offered the opportunity to perform in the USA. Auckland dancer/teacher/ choreographer, Kristie Mortimer is working with Kim Davey, of World Class Dance Tours, to organise a trip for dancers aged 12 years and over. They are also looking for parent chaperones to accompany them. The two-week tour to Los Angeles is currently planned for the 2016 school holidays in April, July or September. HAVE always found John Kirwan a good, honest bloke but he’s living in fantasy land if he believes he’s going to remain the Blues Super 15 rugby coach “for the long haulâ€?. Coaches, like players, should be judged by results and JK’s record of two 10ths in his ďŹ rst two years as the Blues mentor is inacceptable. Starting his third season with four losses to extend his record to just 13 wins in 36 games does not justify his conďŹ dence in himself or the team he coaches. He was a great player but great players don’t necessarily make great coaches. The late Fred “The Needleâ€? Allen was an exception and Alex Wyllie served Canterbury and the All Blacks with distinction. Laurie Mains wasn’t a great All Black fullback but he was an outstanding coach and conďŹ ded to me that he was a better forward coach than a back coach, having been steeped in the tradition of Otago legend Vic Cavanagh. John Hart, Graham Henry and Hansen were not All Blacks but all three proved themselves to be bril-

But only one, Piutau, belongs among a backline that has too few ball distributors who can draw in two or more defenders and put a teammate through a gap for a try with a sweetly-timed pass. Picking the right men for the job and teaching them to hone that skill is the job of the selectorcoach. As such, JK must accept responsibility. That is his challenge. Failure to do so means he can expect the same fate as players who get axed when they fail to perform up to expectations. Converting a failed team into a champion one is the mark of a great coach, just as Dave Rennie did with the Chiefs. Admittedly it helped that the brilliant Wayne Smith is on his coaching staff. However, Kirwan also had Graham Henry over the past two years before he resigned. No one doubts JK’s loyalty or passion. But his inability to produce a cohesive backline that makes smart decisions continues to be a major concern for a worried franchise that struggles to put bums on seats.

LAIMS for Cameron Brown to be considered New Zealand’s greatest ever athlete have been given another boost. Brown, of Dannemora, won the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo on Saturday. It was his 11th win in the race, the most by any Ironman athlete in one event. The 42-year-old also broke his own record for being the oldest competitor to win an Ironman. “My first victory in 2001 was pretty cool, but when you win when you are nearly 43 it is right up there,� he says. “I never thought I’d be winning this race at 42.� In the 3.8-kilometre swim leg, Christchurch’s Dylan McNiece made the most of idyllic conditions to create a new course record, exiting the water in 44 minutes 26 seconds. The previous mark was 44m 47s, set by Kiwi Brent Foster in 2004. Brown was in eighth place going into the swim-bike transition, 5m 30s back from the lead. Perennial podium-getter Terenzo Bozzone hit the front on the 180km cycle, with the gap back to Brown getting out to six minutes at one point. “When you give a lead like that to Terenzo... I was pretty worried,� says Brown. “I felt strong throughout the bike and managed to slowly catch up. The wind was getting pretty strong and I rode pretty solidly.� Brown put the hammer down in the final 90km of the bike, posting the race’s best split of 4h 37m to be neck and neck with Bozzone heading

out on the run. “I felt bloody good coming into town with the wind behind me and managed to catch Terenzo in the last 10km,� he says. “I think I needed to as he would have felt much better
with a lead going into the run.� The marathon along the shores of Lake Taupo and through the town’s centre is Brown’s stomping ground. He established a nearly 20-second advantage over Bozzone, 12 years his
junior, after just 4km. “Last year we started the run together and it was pretty consistent at 3m 50s [per km] pace,� says Bozzone. “This year I saw him knocking off 3m 30s. I thought, ‘yeah there is a
tail wind but we still have 42km to go.� Brown maintained his relentless push to clock the fastest run time of 2h 49m, crossing the line in 8h 22m 13s. Bozzone was six minutes back, with 29-year-old McNiece in third. “The crowd was amazing the whole run,� says Brown. “They’re all telling me, ‘you’re gonna win it’, but you never believe that because you’ve got these guys so close behind you. “It’s not until 2km to go that you believe you can actually win. “It’s amazing the atmosphere down here. It’s my 18th year doing Ironman New Zealand and that’s why I keep coming back.� It was Bozzone’s fourth-time finishing behind Brown, while McNiece had the privilege for the first time in his race debut. “Ironman is all about the second half of the race,� says Bozzone. “You’d think I would have learnt my lesson, this is my seventh year here. I should have backed off an extra few per cent [on the bike] and I would have been able to use that tail wind a bit more coming home. “It wouldn’t be a hollow victory without Cameron here, but I’d like to take it away from him before he retires.� McNiece says: “I remember watching Brownie when I first started out in 2005. I’ve always wanted Brownie to win [in the past], so I would have felt pretty bad if I’d taken it off him [on Saturday].�
