ebruary 24 is a day that will haunt Martin MacKenzie forever. Standing on the side of Chapel Road with a white cross on that very day this year, Martin remembers his son Luke who died in a car crash in the same spot two years ago. Luke MacKenzie was on his way to work when he was killed in a head-on collision caused by 27-year-old drink-driver Xingyu Shang in the early morning of February 24, 2014. Mr MacKenzie stands at the crash site in Flat Bush every year to remember his son with a cross made by Luke’s friends. He not only does it as a sign of respect for his boy but also to encourage others to be more conscious drivers. “If people see me they might remember ‘oh yeah, somebody was killed there, maybe I should drive a little better’.” The last two years have been turmoil for the MacKenzie family, not only because they lost their son but also because of mis-

understanding that arose after the crash. The court has heard that after colliding head-on with Luke’s car, Mr Shang searched for his phone, got out of his car and hailed down another driver to take him home. Not once did he check on the other driver or make any attempt to call for help. “That part of the story has never really been truly told and a lot of people just don’t understand it,” Mr MacKenzie says. “He actually consciously made the decision in his own mind, whether he had a head injury or not, he consciously made the decision to not offer help, he made a conscious decision to leave the scene of the crash. “That’s something that we personally have to struggle with for the rest of our lives.” Seven months after the crash, charges were laid against Shang of careless driving causing death, while under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop after a crash. Mr Shang offered only one reason for leaving the scene – he was “dazed.” ➤ Turn to Page 3

By NATALIE BRITTAN The former wife of an imprisoned Chinese drug lord is facing tax evasion charges in court. Haiyan Luo (Sherley), the former owner of Kanda Sushi in Burswood, is being prosecuted by the IRD for tax evasion amounting up to $1.2 million. Luo was married to highprofile drug dealer Xianghua Zeng who had multiple identities and was also known as Guoming Chen. Zeng had managed to evade

authorities in Fiji, Hong Kong, Malaysia and New Zealand before being arrested in Fiji in 2013 exposing a meth operation worth $700 million. He is currently serving a 15-year jail sentence in China. In a signed affidavit sighted by the Times, Luo said she first moved to New Zealand in 1999 and met Zeng in 2006. He later moved to New Zealand to be with Luo in 2008. She described being unaware of her husband’s illicit activities and her suspicions were raised when encountering resistance

at immigration borders. Luo then said she discovered her husband’s real identity through Chinese police and the media in July 2013 and subsequently divorced him, alleging she was “like a cover for him and his devious activities”. Her business was registered under Ever Win Trading which was liquidated in March last year, owing more than $780,000 to creditors. The company had multiple directors with Luo listed as a director from 2010 to 2013.

Insolvency officer Daniel Yee of Waterstone Insolvency says investigations into the business showed that Haiyan Luo remained in full control of the business as a shadow director until its sale in February 2014. “It also appears that little to no financial records were kept for the business, which we suspect contributed to the huge debts incurred. “The liquidators are continuing to investigate and may commence proceedings against Luo.”

He’s talking about the long convoluted trail he and the chairman of Counties Manukau Pacific Trust (now renamed Second Nature Charitable Trust), Sir Noel Robinson, have followed through the bureaucracy and politics of local government to the halls of commerce where the money has been raised for the $35 million project. says he has driven past the site often and watched its progress with interest. “We are always looking for the latest innovation and technology,” he says. “This is very much about us going into a new energy future and also giving back to the Auckland community. It will put New Zealand on the map.” The Wero project, he

says, is up there with the energy company’s other investments, for example the Vector Arena. “It is operated successfully and it is all about international shows. We see this project fitting the same philosophy.” Kiwi Olympic kayaking champion Ian Ferguson is general manager of Wero. He says kayakers through-

out the world know about Wero. “We are famous before it has opened. But Auckland is yet to realise how fortunate the city is when people see the water flushing down. “The opportunity for me is to mould it to how I want it to run, to employ the right people, introduce the right rides and get into the schools, doing what I feel is good for the sport and the country. “With my background I have a handle on how it should be.” Mr Ferguson will test the rapids with experienced rafters and kayakers before the park opens to the public late next month. The venue already has the kayaking contract for the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland. And, in what Mr Ferguson calls “the pointy end” the word has gone out to Olympian kayak-

ers throughout the world for an international invitational regatta next November. And kayaking teams in Europe want to be based at the park next New Zealand summer. Local schools have started booking in for three white water activities courses on offer. Mr Jeffery says schools will get a 50 per cent subsidy for entry at $18.50 per student (Years 7-13) with some schools qualifying for full sponsorship. ■■ Wero Whitewater Park includes the world’s first man-made 4.5-metre waterfall, modelled after the popular Okere Falls in Bay of Plenty. The grade 3 to 4 white water course is an Olympic standard run that will challenge the world’s top kayakers and rafters. Scientist takes up baton By Natalie Brittan

team of researchers will be swapping their lab coats for running gear for a cause they work for each day. This year, Pakuranga local Amy Tong will be one of them. The research chemist at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre (ACSRC) in Grafton will be taking part in the Cancer Society Relay for Life happening at the Bruce Pulman Park in Takanini on April 2 and 3. While finding an effective drug for cancer and other diseases is part of her job, Ms Tong has her own personal motivations for choosing her career path. “What first sparked my interest in the programme was the passing away of my dad a few months after he was diagnosed during my first year at uni in 2002.” Primarily suffering from lung cancer, the cancer spread rapidly to the brain which rendered her father unable to recognise loved ones.

Ms Tong says it’s one of the hardest things she sees in cancer sufferers. “Sometimes it’s not just the pain but if you can’t communicate with your loved ones it’s quite sad and the loss of dignity as well.” Cancer history remains strong in her father’s side of the family. A few years after her father’s death, her uncle died from late stage liver cancer. His daughter is now in remission having been diagnosed with more than one

cancer. A first-timer in the two-day relay, Ms Tong admits she is not usually the sporty kind, but says she felt she had to do something for her own health and to make a public statement. “People often think we’re hidden in the labs but I believe that cancer research is a collaborative effort between the public and researchers. “We can’t do everything on our own and without donations from the public there would be fewer advances in

research, so the public play a very important role.” The former Pakuranga College student with a PhD in organic and medicinal chemistry says it’s also about creating awareness not just about donations. “I want to reach out to people, connect with them and let them know that what they do in terms of donation or encouragement to us is a big support that makes a difference to us [the scientific community] and eventually the world. After an emotional restorative justice meeting with the Shang family, the Mackenzies were asked to give a suggestion to the court about the defendant’s punishment. However, this is what the MacKenzies believe has been misconstrued the most. “We knew all along, because of our dealings with the police, that because Mr Shang was young and hadn’t had any previous convictions that it was unlikely that he was going to go to jail,” Mr MacKenzie says. “We got into our mind that whatever happens to him doesn’t change anything for us. Luke will never be brought back.” The MacKenzies believe their suggestion for home detention rather than jail has been mistaken for forgiveness. This is far from the case. “On our part there is never going to be any forgiveness towards him. The punishment he gets is never going to be enough for us,” says Luke’s mum Tania. Last month Shang was sentenced in the Manukau District Court to nine months’ home detention after pleading guilty to his charges. He will then be deported back to China. For the MacKenzies, this is one of the smaller victories. They are relieved they will no longer have to worry about bumping into Mr Shang who, at the time of the accident, lived only four streets away. “One of the more difficult things for us was at the time we had found out where he lived. We were constantly seeing their vehicles,” Mr MacKenzie says. While the last two years have been an uphill battle for the couple, they admit those who have particularly been affected are their two younger sons, Tyler and Ryan. “It threw their lives into turmoil,” Mrs MacKenzie says. “Luke, being the oldest, was the strongest and the biggest but he had that role of being the big brother. He was just THE big brother and the two boys just looked up to him and they knew if they ever needed anything, Luke was going to be there to look after them.” Now that their dealings with Mr Shang are finally over, the MacKenzies agree that while things may start to get easier, there will never be an end to their heartache. “There is no closure. Time makes it a little bit easier but that’s about all it does. Two years ago the memories were picture perfect, now they’re a little bit fuzzy.” Mr MacKenzie says. As far as looking to the future, the MacKenzie’s say the death of their eldest son has given them a new outlook on life. “I look it as everyday is a gift. It changes your aspect on everything,” says Mr MacKenzie. “Up until Luke’s passing I always liked the possessions, the nice car, the nice boat, the nice house, you know everything. “Whereas now for us and for the boys and even for our friends their lives have changed and as far as what’s important to them now was not important to them two years ago. Mrs MacKenzie replies: “Why wait for a holiday? Let’s enjoy life now. You never know what’s around the corner.”

Luo had owned the property strip which housed the restaurant at 295 Ti Rakau Drive since 2009 and formed a company called Full Module Properties to manage the tenancies. According to liquidator Grant Reynolds of Reynolds & Associates, the property was refinanced to repay debt to numerous parties including to the IRD, but the company defaulted and the property was eventually sold by mortgagee sale in 2014. Full Module Properties was liquidated last year, owing more than $1m to creditors. In 2014, Luo launched another branch of Kanda, registered under the names Kanda Central and Ever Wealth, which operated in the CBD on Elliot Street.

Both Kanda Central and Ever Wealth went into liquidation in July last year, owing more than $30,000 to creditors. Allegations of exploitation have emerged from former employees against Luo, including unpaid wages and financial extortion in exchange for work visas. Former employee Jiazhou Zou (Nero) lodged

a complaint against Luo to the Employee Relations Authority. In documents released to the Times, bank records show payments from Kanda Group being made into Mr Zou’s account that were reversed the next day. Mr Zou alleged that Luo owed him more than $20,000 including a $15,000 security bond which he paid at the start

of his employment. Mr Zou attempted to take the matter to the Employment Court but the complaint lapsed due to lack of evidence and he has since left the country. The Times attempted to contact Luo but calls to her mobiles went straight to voicemail. Luo is set to go on trial at the Waitakere District Court in April.

n important new and popular event for all ages and cultures has been established with the inaugural Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show. Chairman of the event’s organising committee, Reverend Dr Richard Waugh says while the show is an Auckland regional event, many people commented on the ideal location at Lloyd Elsmore Park, with three entrances, and the nearby ambience of the Howick Historical Village. “We have every reason to stay at the venue and the wonderful support of people and organisations from the Howick Ward certainly helped make for a very successful first event,” he says. An estimated 5000 people attended the show which was held last Sunday. Close to 500 cars and motorcycles were attracted, by far the largest such gathering in the Howick district, Mr Waugh says Cars of many ages, makes and models lined up on more than 40 sites. Among the quirky was a Kubelwagen Type 82 Volkswagen, a light military vehicle used by the German military in

World War II. A 1933 Morgan 3-wheeler made its appearance - a cycle car which originally avoided British tax on cars by being classified as a motorcycle. And memories of the Russian Lada’s introduction to New Zealand were revived at the sight of a Cossack Lada SUV. Mr Waugh says the organising committee is working to make the show an annual event and will be doing a thorough evaluation of last Sunday’s show as it plans for future years. “Our committee worked hard to ensure the event was free to all participants and the public,” he says. “We were absolutely clear the event had to be accessible to everyone. “The support from Auckland car clubs and classic car owners was superb.” Important sponsorship support came from the Howick Local Board, Protecta Insurance, Times Newspapers and Jo Clements Freelance Designer. And, with many other supporters, like Menz Shed and East Auckland Scouts, Mr Waugh says an important new and popular event for all ages and all cultures has been established. Howick Local Board chairman David Collings says he

jumped at supporting the idea when it was mooted. “However the day was well beyond my expectations. They have done an incredible job to attract 440 cars and so many people. It was a great thing to make it free and it’s the kind of event we want,” he says. “Having the Historical Village get in alongside with a gold coin donation was great exposure for them. It was a win-win for everyone and a great venue.” Charmaine Chapman, events and marketing team leader at the Historical Village says the well-organised day was a great example of how community groups can work together. Offering a gold coin donation as entry to the village, close to 1000 visitors came through, she says, with people coming from all over Auckland and many first-time visitors. “The Howick Village radio station was great in giving us air time and the video of our interview is still gaining publicity on You Tube which is a winwin situation for both of us,” she says. “The [village] board, manager, staff and volunteers all agree that it was a successful day for all concerned and we definitely hope to work with everyone again.”

Crime prevention technology has come up with the goods for a school that has lost its loudspeakers multiple times. The public announcement tools belonging to Owairoa Primary School were found by police recently thanks to SelectaDNA technology, an invisible ink with a unique serial number that can be used to track down owners. Principal Alan McIntyre says the school’s outdoor speakers had been stolen three or four times within the past nine months and have had to be replaced. “We’ve spent over $5000 on speakers which we’re not very happy about,” Mr McIntyre says. However, the school has now decided not to replace the audio equipment. “We put cages around them but they [the thieves] unscrewed them and took the cages out. They’ve obviously got spanners that can undo them,” Mr McIntyre says. “We decided we’re not going to have an outside speaker and will investigate new technology instead of speakers such as upgrading the speakers in our classroom.” Mr McIntyre says the brazen nature of the thefts is concerning. “They do it in broad daylight. A parent complained after seeing kids on the roof in the middle of the day. They have no fear of being seen, are antisocial and have no respect for

people’s property.” Last week, the Times reported the rise of such thefts in East Auckland with youths placing the stolen items on bicycles to form makeshift stereos. Counties Manukau East Police crime prevention manager Jared Pirrett says the trend began in West Auckland and spread through social media. “Although we haven’t seen anything [of that nature] in the east we have stopped vehicles with them and are following these inquiries.” Mr Pirrett says a handful of youth have been apprehended in relation to the thefts. t’s not often doctors go from saving lives to saving face (literally!), but that’s exactly what Dr Mark Morunga did more than six years ago. The founder of Face Doctors, a leading appearance medicine clinic, first started out in primary health care more than 20 years ago and has been based at the East Care Accident & Medical Centre on Botany Road for 18 years. CAB provides human touch As more services are provided online, the Citizens Advice Bureau remains committed to providing a person-to-person service. Louise Boswell, manager at the CAB Pakuranga says being able to talk to a real person is a rarity these days and is a key part of what makes the CAB service unique. “People really appreciate the chance to talk to someone in person about their problems,” she says.”Although there’s now a wealth of information available online, a lot of people want help to work out how that information relates to them, and that’s where we

can help.” She says the bureau provides a person-toperson advice service that is independent, confidential and free of charge. “We have been lucky to open a new office at the Botany Town Centre to help meet the needs of the Botany/Flat Bush community and during March 15-17 we will have a small stand manned by volunteers in the Atrium.” Last year CAB volunteers nationally received more than 535,000 enquiries on issues ranging from immigration, housing and employment to consumer rights, health and family

issues. CAB Pakuranga had 12,656 enquiries last year. Some of the most common types of enquiries dealt with included housing, consumer and employment issues, relationship and neighbourhood matters, immigration difficulties and disputes. Thieves reel in fishing equipment By Natalie Brittan

oaties are coming home empty-handed from their fishing trips thanks to some slippery suspects stealing their gear. Counties Manukau East Police crime prevention manager, inspector Jared Pirrett, says there has been a “real spike” in boat-related crime. “They [the offenders] are opening the covers, taking fishing equipment such as rods, electronic equipment, gps trackers and fish finders, which sometimes cost thousands of dollars and then they replace the cover and disappear. “Often it’s not until the victim goes fishing and takes the cover off that they realise that their things are gone.” Mr Pirrett says there have been around 10 incidents in the last month. “They’re happening right around the coast. Most boats are parked up next to the

garage and the offenders are walking on the property targeting the boat looking for fishing equipment.” Most items taken do not possess serial numbers and making it difficult for owners to recover them, Mr Pirrett says. Police are monitoring trading sites regularly to identify potentially stolen items. “There’s obviously a market for it, there’s a little bit more than one or two opportunistic thefts,” Mr Pirrett says. Mr Pirrett says police are following positive lines of inquiry and urge boat owners

to remain vigilant. “Take responsibility, secure your boat, and put it somewhere not easily accessible from the road. “People should also be securing items that are highly sought after such as the lines, the tackle, electronic equipment that goes with the fishing, keeping an eye on it and recording serial numbers.” If people notice any suspicious behaviour around boats, they can call Counties Manukau Police on 261-1300 or the anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800-555-111.

Tradies, protect your property Police are urging tradies to take just five minutes out of their day to photograph their tools and serial numbers with their phones. Sergeant John Roberts of the Counties Manukau East Tactical Crime unit says that the simple task of taking a quick photo with a mobile phone of tools and their serial numbers would help police greatly in returning stolen property to their owners and holding the offenders to account. “Often tradesmen aren’t insured as the cost can be too great and we would love to be able to return property

to the rightful owners,” Mr Roberts says. “Often police recover scores of tools which we know are stolen but we cannot locate an owner, which is hugely disappointing.” Police are encouraging everyone to record the serial numbers of their property. The Serial Number Asset Partnership is an initiative of the New Zealand Police which allows an online asset list and is only accessible to the individual. It is free to use and available at www. snap.co.nz. “Ideally, it would be best

if the public used SNAP but even taking five minutes to photograph your property and serial numbers with your phone would help us out a lot,” Mr Roberts says. Recovered items which cannot be returned to their owners are eventually sold at auction with the money going to the Government. “I would prefer to give it back to the people who have worked hard to buy it,” Mr Roberts says. t could have been an episode of The Block, as Riverhills School officially revealed the transformation of a neglected dental clinic into a bright, cheerful space. Thanks to the Pakuranga Rotary Club, the school in Waikaremoana Place received a cosy, new whanau room last month where parents, families and children can mingle freely. Pakuranga Rotarian Sylvie Wilkinson, who was instrumental in the project, says the club was inspired by the principal’s vision for the school since taking over last year. “We thought ‘let’s change an absolute dumping ground into something that will bring parents into the school’,” says Mrs Wilkinson. “And when we asked who would help, 36 members put their hands up!” They included builders, electricians and other handy people who all contributed in some way, painting, laying carpet, sourcing furniture and cleaning, says Mrs Wilkinson.

illiam Shakespeare’s love story Romeo & Juliet is appropriately this year’s opening production for the Howick Childrens and Youth Theatre (HCYT), more so that it will be performed outside the theatre’s character building in Granger Road. Director Kelly Scott says the play was chosen because of the building and its adaption to the outdoor setting. “As a youth theatre, it’s also appropriate having teenagers playing the parts of Romeo and Juliet,” she says. “They are taking to the language and finding meaning within it. They are bringing the pages to life.” In fact the two key characters have been “in love” before. Hamish Regan playing Romeo and Nadia Stopforth, as Juliet, took the key roles in a previous production of Our Town which was worked around the innocence of love. Hamish, 15, says he hasn’t played Romeo before, but the Macleans College student studied the play in Year 9. “I am familiar with the text but not the nitty gritty of the lines,” he says. “There is so much more to it. He’s a versatile character involving a bit of all the emotions, depending on where in the scene. It involves spur of the moment and quick changes. He can be completely excitable and over the top and then to tragedy.” “I’ve enjoyed the challenge of learning new things, especially the sword fighting and being able to get the versatility of Romeo. Nadia, 16, says she is enjoying playing a grown-up part.

Athletics victory Pakuranga Athletic Club member Nneka Okpala had an impressive victory along with two other Kiwi athletes at the IAAF Challenge in Melbourne on Saturday March 5. Okpala added a huge 0.24m to her national triple jump record, winning at 13.89m and defeating the leading Australians. John Brooks Industrial Automation Supplies were invited to the school to show off some of their electronic and robotic ‘toys’ to the budding engineers. The aim of the workshop, Pakuranga College Principal Michael Williams says, was for the students to get some real-world experience in the field of mechatronics and is the first stage of a work experience programme the school is organising with John Brooks. “We’re talking about how we can set up some work experience and gateway programmes for some students so we give the kids a bit more of an idea of what the mechatronics industry is like,” he said. The electronics programme at Pakuranga College, which starts in year 10, is growing in popularity and works closely with Howick College. Tim Brichau, a year 13 Pakuranga College student, said the workshop gave the students valuable insight into what the future holds. “We’re using a lot of stuff that we will be either using this year or at university. If we choose to go on to engineering, we’ve got actual experience within the field,” he said.

It is an indisputable fact that generally the public are quite quick to rush to criticise the services provided by various institutions that have been established essentially to provide various services to the public. The adverse observations are often given wide publicity in the print and electronic media. Regrettably, however, the public are reluctant to commend or express their appreciation of efficient admirable services. Recently my wife and myself were required to seek the assistance of the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), had to visit its office at Highland Park. Experiencing some rare, courteous friendly and expeditious service, I am obliged to convey my appreciation of such admirable and exemplary service. We visited the Highland Park office and from the point of entry we were afforded a friendly and encouraging reception from the security point, the reception and up to the interview by a young lady officer we experienced a rare, courteous, friendly service, apparently with a sense of empathy and care. We were thoroughly impressed by the infrastructure and administration, so set us to serve the public so efficiently and expeditiously and the staff are so highly-motivated and dedicated, this institution is definitely a pride to the MSD and the state. Carpark rage

On Monday, February 29, around 5pm I’m coming out of Cascades Fruit & Vege. It’s raining, I have 2 big bags of fruit and veg and my handbag. In the almost empty carpark there was a car parked right next to mine in the opposite direction to mine so our driver’s doors were almost next to each other, and in it was an older lady with a young toddler in the back seat. Her light blue metallic car was parked quite close to mine, so to make it easy for me to open my door without opening it onto her car I tapped on her window and asked very nicely if she could please move her car so I can get into mine without damaging hers. She told me to hop in the other side of the car (the passenger’s side)? I replied no, and once again asked her if she could just move forward please (remembering the carpark was almost empty). This slimly built 60 something lady, holding no bags of fruit and veg and no handbag got out of her car and told me to unlock my car (she was trying to show me that there was plenty of room I think). By now I’m getting really angry and wet and replied that I wouldn’t unlock my car for her. She then hopped back in her car and told me in no uncertain terms that she wouldn’t move her car and that I needed to get a life! So here’s me, not so slimly built, angry, wet, hands full and having to get into my car. I

had to slide along the wet car, throw my bags across the seat and do the get-one-leg-in and then drop into my car. Was I really being unreasonable by asking this woman to move? Why do some people have to be so inconsiderate? And why did she have to park right next to my car anyway when the whole carpark only had 2 other cars in it? I hope no one else has to deal with this woman and what sort of behaviour is that teaching the little toddler in the back seat? She turned my good day into a bad one. Diane Andrew Howick

This beach is unique

RE ‘No, to beach plans’ (Times, November 2015 - Local residents are at odds with Auckland Council plans to spend between $1.6 and $2.9 million on a walking/cycleway along the Bucklands Beach foreshore). We can’t lose the car parks or grassed areas. This is a unique little beach for families and the elderly that have to be able to park next to the beach. Many families with children, barbeques and picnics, school yachting groups, church baptisms, yoga health groups, paddle boards, wind surfing and many more use this beach because of its grassed area and car parking close to a very safe swimming beach. rom being a medical receptionist and a single mother of two with just one pair of shoes to meeting a billionaire businessman for lunch in Hawaii, travelling the world and being appointed the CEO of a large business conglomerate is a story worth sharing. Leading businesswoman Diane Foreman captivated the audience with her journey of spectacular failures and wins during a speech at the International Women’s Day Celebration hosted by the Rotary Club of Pakuranga at the Waipuna Conference Centre. More than 140 people attended the evening, to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. A merry mix of CEOs, corpo-

rate head honchos, educationists, Rotarians and prominent community members attended the well orchestrated event. Sylvie Wilkinson, Pakuranga Rotary’s community director, with the help of the Rotaract Club of Pakuranga, named every table after significant women of the world like Helen Keller, Harper Lee, Florence Nightingale and Marie Curie. Radio host Helen Jackson, MC for the event, spoke about the Guardian Angel story, a charity close to her heat. The charitable trust looks after the needs of terminally-ill children and their families. By the end of the evening, guests had contributed around $3000 to be donated to the charity. It’s appropriate that Howick Little Theatre should open its 2016 season with things distinctly rural, given that the iconic Country Calendar television programme is celebrating 50 years. In conjunction with the milestone, the classic rural comedian Fred Dagg has been revived in nostalgic television

programmes. But anyone expecting Fred Dagg slapstick in Justin Eade’s Central Otago Man will be disappointed. The play is based around Tryfen Gribilco, a Central Otago farmer who has an opinion on just about everything. The farmer is played with gusto by David Jaunay who makes a colourful transition from the screen to theatre boards and vigorously dominates the performance. The opening repartee between him and his off-sider Marty Wellings, played by James Adlam, who is helping him run a bungy jumping business, sets the plot. But because of its length,

the debate leaves the audience waiting for the play to ‘get going’. Hitting the boards from the outset with more urgency, or in rural parlance ‘rattle your dags’, may help. Hamish Stevens, playing Australian politician Robert Pilditch, adroitly combines a pompous attitude with an Ozzie drawl while Mazarine Ford, playing his daughter Amanda, is suitably withdrawn and then demure as she and Marty hit it off. But the set dynamics come to life when the German United Nations delegate Mariane Rystyg, played by a feisty Sabine Melese, hits the stage with her pre-conceived

Students delve into water systems W

ater now has a deeper meaning for some Bucklands Beach Primary School students who recently completed a water quality programme with Watercare’s education coordinator Sally Smith. Ms Smith has been working with the school’s Year 6 students to shed light on the journey water makes from river to tap, and then out to the wastewater system. Lessons took place over one week and began in class with a drinking water drama session where the students became water drops and went on a water cycle journey. They were also the first students to be shown Watercare’s new educational video

describing the water treatment process. The importance of a sound water filtration system was reinforced with an experiment in which the children created their own filters using any combination of paper towels, cotton balls, bark and sand. Following an in-class water-sampling session, a field trip to nearby Macleans Reserve gave the classes a chance to put the theory to the test. Students collected water samples from the waterway and recorded the turbidity, pH and nitrate levels. They also identified bugs living in the water. For Jocelyn Ironside, 9, Zoe Barrett, 9, Alessan-

The water treatment process, particularly the step where Watercare uses strands of membranes to filter out pathogenic organ-

isms, also resonated with the group. Teacher Lynn Corderoy says Watercare’s education programme has helped her students understand the importance of water in their day-to-day lives. “We are covering the water cycle throughout the term and Sally has really helped increase their awareness of water and the fact that it is not an endless resource. “These children are the ones who will buy houses and use water in the future. Hopefully they’ll take Sally’s little tips home, like turning off the taps when you brush your teeth.”

Sculpture exhibition a delight The 92 pods and pitchers that make up Khulu were hand cast, celebrating John Ferguson’s ability to see hints of nature in man-made forms

ore than 320,000 people visited Sculpture in the Gardens this summer and were delighted by the array of outstanding artworks, free activities and beautiful gardens. The exhibition closed with a festive celebration and the announcement of the Friends of Auckland Botanic Gardens People’s Choice Award, won by sculptor John Ferguson for his botanically inspired sculpture, Khula. Outgoing president of the Friends of the Auckland Botanic Gardens Bill Burrill closed the exhibition and, together with new president Dianne Glenn, announced the People’s Choice Award winner. “Once again Sculpture in the Gardens has delighted visitors and celebrated great art in a beautiful setting,” Mr Burrill said.

Both the Friends and the sculptors are delighted with sales from the exhibition.” Auckland Council parks, recreation and sports committee chair, Christine Fletcher acknowledged the ongoing support of the Friends and the exhibition’s enthusiastic volunteers. “This is a special partnership for the council which sees the Gardens’ supporters driving its single-biggest event and one that brings the most visitors through the gates. “The Friends’ support and the generous contribution of all the volunteers that join us for Sculpture in the Gardens guarantee its success and have helped place this event on Auckland’s ‘essential must-see’ calendar, Ms Fletcher said. Auckland Botanic Gardens manager Jack Hobbs says attendance at this summer’s exhibition was down a little on the last one but made for a very busy summer. “We are delighted with the numbers and with the feedback we’ve received from visitors,” he said. “This exhibition continues to draw people deeper into our gardens than they have ever been

before and learning about the collections on the way. “As with each exhibition, we are thrilled to provide the public with a free opportunity to experience art in a very accessible way,” he said. Sculpture in the Gardens ran from last November 29 to March 6 where 20 sculptures by 21 artists were exhibited on a two-kilometre trail through the Auckland Botanic Gardens. Sculpture in the Gardens is organised by the Friends of the Auckland Botanic Gardens, the Auckland Botanic Gardens and Auckland Council with support from the Manurewa Local Board, along with other sponsors and volunteers. The next exhibition will start in November 2017. More information is online at www.sculptureinthegardens.nz. ■ Located just off the Southern Motorway in Manurewa, the Auckland Botanic Gardens are spread across 64 hectares and feature more than 10,000 plants. The property is owned and managed by Auckland Council and entry is free. The Gardens are open every day from 8am8pm. The visitor centre closes at 4.30pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends and the cafe closes at 4pm every day. Both are closed on Christmas Day.

on’t blame coach Tana Umaga for making six changes to a Blues Super Rugby team beaten 28-13 by the Crusaders at Christchurch. While it is true that pivots Bryn Hall and Ihaia West performed better in helping the team win the previous week against the champion Highlanders, the main reason the Blues lost in Christchurch was not because they were replaced by Billy Guyton and Matt McGahan but because they couldn’t get their hands on the ball. The Crusaders forwards were much too good in every phase from scrum, lineouts to breakdowns. Which, given the fact that pack had five starting All Blacks in Joe Moody, Codie Taylor, Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock and Kieran Read, was hardly surprising. With the Crusaders making five lineout steals and their fearsome front row dominating scrums, the back pedalling Blues never recovered. However the scrum did

Newman into Black Sticks Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club’s Dominic Newman has made the cut as the only debutant named in the 2016 New Zealand Black Sticks squad last week. The 19-year-old had an impressive 2015 season playing for the under 21s and the Ford National Hockey League. The striker said he was surprised to get the call-up but is excited about the prospect of playing for his country at the highest level. “I was stunned to get the call from Colin to make the big jump, but I’m really humbled and looking forward to doing my absolute best for the squad,” he said. “I’m really excited to be part of the group. There are guys in the team that have been there a long time and players like Ryan and Simon who I looked up to as a kid.” Newman will join fellow Howick Pakuranga players Devon Manchester, Hugo Inglis, Blair Tarrant and Kane Russell in the New Zealand squad. Black Sticks Men’s head coach Colin Batch named the 25 man squad combining experience and young talent in the lead up to this year’s Rio Olympic Games. Batch said selections for the national squad were extremely tough given the growing depth and quality of players within the wider group. “The 25 players we have named in the national squad have the best opportunity to be selected for Rio, and we have seen a lot of pressure from within the group to further the development of each individual which is pleasing,” he said. “While we still look to leadership from the more experienced players like Ryan, Brad and Kyle, it’s the younger group who are taking on more and more responsibility. The incomparable Cameron Brown, from Dannemora, once again defied the sands of time as the 43-year-old bagged his 12th victory in the Kellogg’s NutriGrain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo on Saturday. He extended his own world record as the oldest winner of any Ironman race and also became the first professional man to win the same Ironman race on 12 occasions. It proved a day of double triumph with American Meredith Kessler, who won for the fifth straight time in Taupo, and Brown both establishing new course records. Brown delivered a trademark patient and perfectly judged physical effort, to stop the clock in a time of 8:07:57 to clinch victory at the Taupo venue he has come to regard as his second home. He was more than seven minutes inside the record set by Bevan Docherty in 2013, while Kessler’s winning effort of 8:56.07 smashed her own record which she has bettered in each of the last three years.

By Rumer-Grace Archer akuranga College have a gifted cricketer in their midst who recently took on some of the world’s top juniors in the ICC under 19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh. Year 13 student, Dale Phillips was selected for the New Zealand U19 squad after his performance at the men’s under 19 district tournament at Lincoln University in December. Playing against international teams in the World Cup, Dale says, was eye-opening to the talent that lies outside New Zealand. “It was an interesting experience; obviously a lot different to playing in New Zealand, different conditions, (versus) international teams instead of club teams or school teams so the standard of cricket is much higher.” Prior to the World Cup, the New Zealand junior squad had their first taste of international cricket in a two week tri-series against Australia and Pakistan in Dubai. “We definitely got a kick up the butt, it forced us to work harder and work as a team more and we started to come together more in Dubai but the

World Cup we dropped off a bit,” Dale says. Despite a disappointing twelfth placing, it was a valuable learning experience for the New Zealand team. “I think we got a bit too ahead of ourselves because we thought it was going to be easy (playing) teams like Nepal and then they came and beat us.” Dale’s cricket talent runs in the Phillips’ family with his older brother Glenn playing for the Mondiale Auckland Aces. “My brother is cricketcrazy. He is currently playing for the Aces so he used to be cricket, cricket, cricket so it got passed down to me as well I guess.” Dale’s talent was picked up early - from the age of five. Since then he has played in teams above his age grade and for some time in the same team as his brother. At the age of 15, Dale debuted for the Howick Pakuranga senior premier team scoring an unbeaten 49. The all-rounder was this season selected for Auckland Cricket’s Developing Future Aces programme that aims to better young players who have the right attributes for

the Mondiale Auckland Aces in the future. Although the Phillips family are from South Africa, the 17-yearold says his heart lies in New Zealand with the Black Caps. “I used to always

say ‘I’m gonna go back to South Africa and play for them ‘cos it’s my home country’ but I got over that and realised this is my country now.” Looking up to Black Cap Kane Williamson for inspiration, Dale says being selected for the Black Caps in the future would be “a dream.”
