evere localised flooding killed stock, caused damage and brought major disruption to areas of Auckland’s south eastern coast and inland Papakura yesterday. The flooding affected Beachlands, Maraetai, Kawakawa Bay, Papakura and surrounding areas. Several Times staff members were caught in diversions forcing them around flooding along Mill Road, Alfriston. Auckland Council’s head of emergency operations Adam Davis was in the affected areas throughout the night and said many properties in the Papakura, Kawakawa Bay, Beach-

lands and Maraetai areas were directly affected by flooding and some local roads were closed or affected by slips. A Clevedon family was also evacuated from their home as heavy rain causes flooding on Wairoa River. Grant Henson yesterday just wanted he and his wife, four children and two dogs to get to dry land. He said sheep on the property were drowning while their cars were almost fully submerged in water. Mr Henson said their driveway was like the ocean and he and his family will take what

possessions they could and get out. The following is a summary of affected areas: Papakura and Clevedon – severe inland flooding closing roads with stormwater mains affected. Fire Service and Auckland Council Stormwater responding with at least one property evacuated with assistance of fire service. Kawakawa Bay – 15 houses affected by flooding; slips on Turei Hill are preventing people getting out of Kawakawa Bay. Fire Service is door knocking to ensure residents are ok. Beachlands – significant flood-

ing around Beachlands with slips making some roads impassable. Some properties have been affected by flooding. People are attempting to drive through floodwaters and are getting stuck (two vehicles have been rescued so far). Maraetai – one house significantly affected by flooding. Hunua – Upwards of 200 children and adults were evacuated from YMCA Camp Adair in the Hunua Ranges. Those stranded were evacuated by bus from Camp Adair to a community-led centre which was opened at Hunua School.

remember how the smallest mention of “chores” could send our household into a frenzy. Firstly, the chore would be announced. Moments later, the voting would begin. We fought, we argued and we brought out every excuse in the book, but when it came time to vote, everyone participated until one sibling was inevitably nominated to do that particular chore. Everyone participated because each one of us knew our opinion could make a significant difference to the outcome. Yet, isn’t it interesting that when it comes to an issue of far greater importance – electing the leadership of our community – it’s clear we believe the opposite. We believe our vote won’t make a difference, that we can’t sway the tide, and that our vote doesn’t count.

We seem to believe that our vote doesn’t hold any power to influence change, and when elections roll around, our deep-seated apathy becomes clearer than ever. Let’s talk about the recent byelection for the Botany subdivision of the Howick Local Board, held on February 17. Following the resignation of Lucy Schwaner in November, the by-election was estimated to cost up to $104,000, and encompassed Flat Bush, East Tamaki, East Tamaki Heights and Ormiston. Of the 36,333 electors issued a voting document, only 8771 electors voted, placing participation levels at a shockingly low 24.14 per cent. That’s less of a turnout than the October 2016 election, when 36.9 per cent of eligible voters in the Botany subdivision submitted their vote – the lowest of the three Howick Local Board subdivisions. Mount Albert’s latest by-election proved a similar trend, when 13,715

Aucamp competed in ten events over the two-day championship held at Caledonian Ground, Dunedin, from February

18-19 and gained personal bests in five of these. Of the events he competed in, which included long jump, shot put, running, hurdles and pole vault, Aucamp said competing in 110 metre hurdles was the highlight. “It’s one of my best events, but it’s also the most fun.” The Year 13 Elim Christian College student flew back to Auckland late Monday morning,

We’ve got problems, Auckland – and this is one of them. When it comes to electing our leaders, we can’t afford to sit back pretending democracy is a spectator sport, because it isn’t. We may think politics is nothing but bickering, bad-mouthing and bureaucracy, but politicians and the decisions they make affect our everyday lives. The people who sit on your local board affect your local beaches, playgrounds, parks, businesses, community events, services, bylaws and more. It’s about time we started to value the opportunity we have to vote for who those people are. When we choose to not vote because we don’t like the options,

the chances of our favourite winning look slim, or we disagree with the reason behind the election itself, we forget that when some of us don’t play ball, we all lose out. We forget that any team’s greatest strength is the participation of its players. Now, this doesn’t mean we’re all going to agree, but it does mean that our vote counts toward us being represented. In the words of Martin Luther King, “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter”. On Saturday, September 23, voting will take place for the general election, and with the opportunity to elect the ruling governing body of our nation for the next four years, I encourage you to talk with your vote, to participate, and to make your voice count for the team. Fury over freedom campers A pilot programme run by Auckland Council is already meeting resistance By Kelly Teed

Howick resident is furious over a freedom camping site being trialled near his property. Paul Venter first noticed the council signs giving freedom campers permission to park in the Fencible Drive carpark on Sunday morning – and says that was the first he’d heard of it. It’s part of a freedom camping pilot programme run by Auckland Council which is currently underway at 27 sites across the Auckland region. Auckland Council said the trial will run for a two-month period from February until the end of March, with all sites being closely monitored. Mr Venter said he’s angry no one consulted him or his neighbours before the trial site was decided on. “Not one person came and spoke to anybody who was affected by it – nobody – we have about 10 properties down our driveway – none of us would have consented to it.” Mr Venter said although the signs stated only self-contained campervans were permitted, a campervan which was parked there was not. He said he doesn’t understand why the site was created so close to people’s properties and where he said “there are no toilet facilities around”. When the Times visited the site

Manager of Bylaws and Compliance at Auckland Council Max Wilde said Council staff visited the Fencible Drive site on Saturday and found no freedom camping taking place. He said the Council is frequently monitoring the site and to date no breach of the conditions has been found, nor rubbish or human waste. Howick Local Board chairperson David Collings said residents had reported “rubbish, human and animal feces, fireworks and

bottles being left and dumped around”. He visited the site on Monday night after concerns raised by “a number of residents” and found no issues. Mr Wilde said all the proposed campsites were approved by the relevant local board and after consultation with the Howick Local Board, the location of the trial site was moved to the other side of the carpark so there would be less impact on the neighbouring residential properties. However Mr Venter wants them gone for good. “I am incredulous anyone could

think it was a good idea. Who in their right mind would want up to 20 campervans parked next to their property doing who knows what? “We bought our house next to a public carpark not a campsite. I challenge anyone to say they would want that to happen [to them].” Mr Venter raised his concerns in an email with local councillors over the weekend and had received responses from Councillor Gary Boles and David Collings who said they would keep an eye on the matter. Mr Venter is also concerned about how the nearby campsite may affect property values in the area. “If someone tried to sell their house – as a prospective buyer – would you like that?” He’s calling for the signs allowing campervans to park to be removed and is worried about how long it will take people to realise if the campsites do not continue after the trial period. “This is now all over freedom camping websites informing people [they can park here]. It’s supposed to be a two month pilot project but how long until those websites take the information down?” Auckland Council says it will continue to closely monitor all of the sites taking place in the trial and will remove any site that has “major issues” from the programme.

News bites Stormwater overflow a one-off Howick Ward Councillor Dick Quax has clarified the stormwater waste spillage at Mellons Bay was a oneoff event - the first of its kind in more than 15 years. On September 25, 2016, a severe storm hit Auckland and caused a major spillage of sewerage, waste and rubbish at Mellons Bay. Mr Quax made the comment at a Howick Local Board meeting on February 20 and said Auckland Council would like to bring “a little bit of context” around the issue.

ast weekend’s Auckland Brit and Euro Car Show was a massive success story - thanks to remarkable weather, a great turnout and enthusiastic participants. Around 7000 to 8000 people attended the free event held at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday and organiser Rev Dr Richard Waugh said he was thrilled with the crowds. “It’s the second year of developing one of east Auckland’s biggest events, and we had overwhelmingly positive feedback.” This year’s non-competitive public event featured around 650 registered cars and motorcycles. Dannemora resident and

president of the Alvis Car Club of New Zealand, Clive Butler, had two cars on display at the show – a 1963 Alvis TD21 coupe and a 1923 Alvis 12/40. “Most people have never sat in a car of this age, so I’m always willing to let people have a seat to see what it was like to drive a car 94 years ago... at the other end of the scale, I had a gentleman who was two years older than the car, so he was most interested but unable to climb up into the car! “A large number of families were enjoying the walk about the park and seeing cars they haven’t seen before. Because there is no competition between the cars, it becomes a very relaxing day.”

DeLorean car owner Mathew Bedogni was displaying a movie version of the car he built himself, reminiscent of the car featured in the 1985 Back to the Future time travelling film. Mr Bedogni built the car for his own satisfaction and didn’t have any plans to share it, but after constant feedback from people wanting rides, he started Hero Car Hire, a business that supplies unique vehicles mainly to PR, marketing and events industries. At the show, he was next to Gary Maitland, the owner of a standard DeLorean, and said it’s the first time in New Zealand the two cars have been side-by-side for people to see the difference. “It was quite entertaining

sometimes. There were interesting comments made as people tried to work out what was what with the two cars.” It still amazes Mr Bedogni that 30 years on, people remember the car from the movie so well. “Most kids stood in amazement that they were actually seeing the time machine.” The Howick resident said he received comments from people who didn’t know the DeLorean was a real production car, and thought it was simply made up for the movie, as well as the commonlyasked question of whether he can actually drive it. “People are amazed that I drive it on the road like a normal car. It certainly gets a lot of attention on the road too.”

The National Party has confirmed five people will contest the Pakuranga electorate seat which will this year be vacated by National MP Maurice Williamson. Mr Williamson is to take a diplomatic posting in Los Angeles. In July last year he announced he would not seek re-election at the General Election in September. To avoid triggering an expensive and disruptive by-election, the MP agreed to remain in Parliament until at least six months before the election. Mr Williamson, an MP for 30 years, will replace Leon Grice, the current Consul General. His start date is unknown however the Times understands he may leave New Zealand in early July. A spokesman for the National Party told the Times that National doesn’t comment on the specifics of local selections. “But we can confirm that several nominations have been received for Pakuranga,” the spokesman said. “Local Pakuranga National Party members will choose delegates who will vote for their preferred candidate at a final selection meeting on March 23.” It is also understood that the party allows no more than five to contest the seat. Howick Local Board deputy chair Katrina Bungard is one of the five National Party candidates nominated. Also throwing their hats into the ring are Harvard-educated economist Dan Bidois, former Bucklands Beach local Sang Cho, Highbrook banker and Manurewa Local Board member Simeon Brown and award-winning chief executive Rahul Sirigiri. In an exclusive interview with the Times’ Marianne Kelly in September, Mr Williamson said the new job was initially a three-year posting but it could be extended.“I concluded after the last election that things were changing. It was likely I would not be so comfortable at Parliament anymore...”

n the late 1800s there was an old tradition of the Police Pay Parade that involved police marching up to the magistrate every month to receive their pay packet in a brown envelope. The men in dress uniform had to pass inspection. Their attire was inspected and the scruffy ones were sent back. Auckland Council has approved a request by Auckland Transport to extend the Notice of Requirement submission period for AMETI Eastern Busway (Panmure to Pakuranga stage) by two weeks to March 20. The decision to extend the period for submissions is due to requests by the local community for more time. “This is an important project for Auckland and local communities in the

South East of the region,” says Duncan Humphrey, project director of AMETI Eastern Busway. “It is great to see people engaged with the decision making process and we welcome the extension of the period.” This stage of the AMETI Eastern Busway project will deliver the initial phase of New Zealand’s first urban busway, allowing bus travel on congestion free lanes

between Panmure and Pakuranga. Chch quake memorial spurs push for Mt Erebus air crash monument A

dvocates for a national memorial for the 257 people who lost their lives in the 1979 Mt Erebus air accident have commended the organisation and work for the recently unveiled Christchurch Earthquake National Memorial. They believe it is an “excellent example” of what can be done with hard work, creativity, national and local Government endorsement, and wide public support, and look forward to similar support for the planning of the Mt Erebus air accident national memorial for the 40th anniversary on November 28, 2019. Erebus National Memorial spokesperson, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, of Howick, said the Christchurch earth-

quake memorial is an attractive design, accessible, not in a cemetery, and a special place to display all the names of the earthquake victims. “I have had many Erebus families contact me saying, “Did you see the Christchurch memorial. That’s what we can do to have all names together, in such a special way”. There is presently no public memorial to the Erebus accident where all 257 names are displayed together. The Mt Erebus air accident with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is still New Zealand’s worst civil disaster and the worst aviation accident in the Southern Hemisphere. Historical Village calls for volunteers The Howick Historical Village is putting out the call for more volunteers. Currently, the village has more than 100 active volunteers – with the youngest just one year old. Events team leader Charmaine Chapman says volunteers are the heart and soul of things at the village. “Without our wonderful volunteers...we would not be able to provide the service we do.” As a thank you, the Howick Historical Village recently hired out a cinema at the Monterey in Howick for volunteers to watch the film Moana. Burglar pleads guilty By Farida Master

26-year-old man has admitted a string of burglaries in the area. The man, facing 25 charges in relation to burglaries in Pakuranga, Howick and Golflands, pleaded guilty when he appeared in the Manukau District Court last Thursday. The sentencing for the first time offender is on May 9. Constable Jasmine HornerPascoe says the offender was arrested twice. He was taken into custody on October 31. “He then went on bail and there was a breach of bail. He was arrested again on November 14 and has been in custody since,” she says. “A member of the public

had taken the car registration down which helped us.” The Times reported in November last year about the man committing a spate of burglaries, breaking into homes and fleeing on his bicycle with small, valuable items. His stealing spree came to an end after an electronic item taken during a burglary was tracked down to a local second-hand dealer. This was enough for police to secure a search warrant. They went to the man’s Pakuranga address on October 31 to search for property taken during a Golflands Drive burglary, only to find $50,000 worth of stolen property at the man’s house. Stolen pearl necklaces, rings, gold bracelets, earrings and

other jewellery as well as souvenir coins, medals, stamp collection and what appears to be a World War II-era bayonet was found. Constable Pascoe says the Times report evoked a great response from readers and helped the team reunite victims with the stolen property. “After the Times reported it, we had a lot of emails from the public which helped us to contact victims and reunite people with their stolen property,” she says. While all the jewellery items have been claimed there is a World War II bayonet that is still unclaimed, she says. “We thought it would get identified but no one has come forward as yet.”

For those who don’t know what that means, Active in Hell is a programme run by Hell pizza that gives young people with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to work in a commercial kitchen. The idea behind it is to empower them with paidtraining and prepare them for a job in a professional set-up. In the pursuit of being a champion of the underdog, Hell has teamed up with IHC/ IDEA (Intellectual Disability Empowerment in Action) Services. They put more than 50 youths with intellectual disabilities through it’s paid training programme with at least seven gaining permanent employment.” Dene Kendall, franchisee owner of Hell, on Botany Road, says he found the experience of training Vincent Choi, a young lad with intellectual disability, very rewarding. “When the opportunity arose to train Vincent, I grabbed it,” he says. “Training reminds you of the skills you have and it’s important to pass it on,” says Mr Kendall, a resident of Golflands who has been part of the hospitality business for more than three decades. He says he enjoyed spending one-on-one time with the young recruit. “I’d call him an hour early, before we opened shop,” he says. “That’s the time the dough is prepared — and a pizza is all about getting the dough right. I would take him through the paces — involving hygiene, preparation of vegetables, turning on the oven, getting prepared for service to the customer and cutting the pizza,” he enthuses. “I spent time solely with him and even taught him how to take his own order, learn the computer system and operate the till.” Mr Kendall says this is an experience he’d like to repeat and is keen to take on another young recruit with special needs in the area. of a full-time role at the end of the training is not a stated goal of the programme, it’s great to see trainees who have proven to be valuable members of the

workforce.” Krissy Gain, supported employment coordinator for IHC’s IDEA Services and national coordinator of Active in Hell, says that paid training is ‘an amazing and exciting opportunity’. “It provides participants with much-needed independence and a sense of being valued for the work they do,” she says. Comprising of two two-hour sessions per week, the paid training is tailored to each participant and covers everything from mandatory health and safety education to preparing food for sale. “Like any other teenager, those with an intellectual disability need some support to transition from school or college to the workforce. Participants also gain skills that many of us take for granted, such as time management, planning travel, keeping uniforms clean and overall personal responsibility,” Ms Gain says.

The school was established in 1875 and has a rich history in the Mt Wellington, Pakuranga area. The board of trustees is asking all former pupils, and staff members to contact the school direct, or on the schools face book page, and spread the word. Historical day organiser and ex-pupil John Lehmann says: “The school has so much history to it, its natural we save it. “Even now it’s very much like a country school with a small roll, and small classes. It’s one of the area’s best kept secrets although many from

Pakuranga and Howick will have attended.’’ Plans are underway to have some classes done out in the late 1800s, early 1920s and 1950s eras with period dress and story tellers to help deliver more authenticity. Garth Barfoot, a director of estate agency Barfoot & Thompson, was a pupil in the 1940s and is strong supporter of the school and will be a guest speaker. Sailing legend Brad Butterworth, of America’s Cup fame, is also ex-pupil and says he has “very fond memories of that school’’. The school is asking anyone that has any old photos, history, or any information on the school too contact them. The school is also seeking people to assist in running the reunion.

ne person was injured following an accidient in Whitford on Monday night which knocked power out for around an 90 minutes in one area. Police were alerted to a vehicle crash on Sandstone Road at around 6.50pm on Monday. A power line has come down in the crash causing power outages in the area. A person was injured in the crash and suffered minor injuries. The road was blocked due to the power line coming down. Meanwhile energy company Vector said power pole accidents are a common occurrence. Vehicles crashed into its Auckland electricity equipment 541 times last year, resulting in power outages across the region. Drivers hit Vector’s power poles 268 times, pillars 253 times (small green boxes) and transformers 20 times in 2016. This compares with a total of 486 in 2015. These numbers don’t include light posts, sign posts, or telecommunication poles managed by other entities. Vector’s chief networks officer, Andre Botha, says August last year was the toughest month with 60 vehicles striking its network, over half of them crashing into power poles. “Power pole accidents are more common than people think. Yesterday alone we had three, with one in Whitford being particularly bad. The average over the last few weeks has been eight a week and this Waitangi weekend alone there were six,” says Mr Botha. “These incidents always mean we have to treat the site as a safety risk to the public and our crews. There is a serious risk of electrocution for passengers and emergency teams which is why we shut off power remotely and then physically disconnect lines at the site for extra safety. “Our message is simple - be careful. We can replace power poles but we can’t replace lives.” Yesterday’s accidents hap-

As part of New Zealand’s National Sea Week 2017, students, parents and teachers of Howick Intermediate School took part in a two-hour long beach clean-up at Eastern Beach on Sunday, February 26. Principal of Howick Intermediate, Yolande Franke led the group as they walked the length and breadth of the Eastern Bays’ treasure. Children received words of praise and gratitude from the Sunday beachgoers for their efforts as they collected rubbish - including plastic bottles, bottle tops, cigarette butts, kid’s toys, lollipop sticks, wrappers, bread

bag ties and other unmentionable items. In addition to giving back to the community, the exercise was also an educational one. The children investigated and identified sea creatures on the beach and foreshore in a square metre area. A number of creatures were spotted through the magnifying glass, including, sand hoppers, sea snails and crabs. Around 200,000 young people to vote Enrolment teams will be at orientation events around the country helping students get enrolled and ready to vote in this year’s General Election. Around 65 per cent of 18 – 24 year olds are already enrolled and the Electoral Commission is working to increase that number. “For almost 200,000 young people, this will be first time they’ve had the chance to vote in a General Election and have their say on issues that affect them,” says Alicia Wright, chief electoral officer. “It’s exciting, but it can be a bit daunting too, so we’ll be at orientation events to make enrolling as easy as possible,” says Ms Wright. Students living away from home can choose to enrol in the electorate where their family home is located or in the electorate where they are studying. “If you’re a student, you can enrol at your family’s home address if you want to,” says Ms Wright. “It just means you’ll need to cast a special vote if you’re away from home at voting time,” says Ms Wright. The Electoral Commission is also working with schools, youth and other community organisations to reach other young voters. “Voting is a lifelong habit. The earlier young people start to vote, the more likely they are to keep voting,” says Ms Wright. Some years ago, Len Brown was mayor of Manukau City. His statements that as the children of South Auckland were the most illiterate in New Zealand, he intended to educate them in our libraries. To the dismay and overruled objections of many library users, the noisy kindergartens were commenced. When Len Brown became Mayor of Auckland, I warned Aucklanders (letter to NZ Herald) to be very aware now that he had access to the much larger public purse. On Friday, February 24 during a 6pm newscast on television, it was announced that our precious libraries as we know them are a thing of the past. They are evidently being turned into classrooms to educate these illiterate children.

Who stole our trailer? Captain Musick Air Scouts and Farm Cove joint Venturer Unit (14.5-18 years olds) volunteered on Sunday to be the marshals for the Brit & Euro Classic Car show in the public car parking section,. We also had a sausage sizzle to raise some funds for unit activities. We had used the trailer to My taxes built and maintained these libraries for people to use and enjoy. Where were the voters?

I was one of the seven candidates in the recent Botany ByElection. I want to publicly thank the 925 people who voted for me. I thank you for putting your faith in me that I would do a good job and would have the skills to be able to carry out that job. I send you all a thank you hug. A big thank you for their efforts also goes out to my family, friends and my mini support team, who helped with bits and pieces along the way. My campaign, when talking to people, was not about getting them to vote for me (even though that would have been nice), but to get people to just vote for any of us. This is the thing that has really disappointed me, voter apathy. All people had to do was open an envelope, read a little, make a decision, tick a box, put a piece of paper in an envelope and post it. It only cost you a little in time and effort. Over 36,000 registered voters in Botany and just under 9000 voted. I think this is pitiful. I often say, if you haven’t

Mr Brereton says that people who find that an increase in their payments would stretch them will have options if they plan early enough. “There are a range of options including reviewing your budget, getting in a boarder, taking on additional work or talking to your bank about a repayment holiday or moving to an interest-only mortgage.” Mr Brereton says that in some cases, people will want to consider selling their home and buying something more affordable. “Obviously, selling under financial pressure isn’t ideal – so the earlier people plan for this option the better”.

Recently, financial watchdog Canstar, which monitors interest rates closely, warned that home loan rates will continue to rise this year and noted that a number of banks have already started increasing their rates. This followed a similar warning from finance minister Steven Joyce and comes despite a decision, by the Reserve Bank, to leave the OCR at 1.75 percent for the remainder of 2017. Mr Brereton says that interest rates have been at historically low levels for several years and that this has enabled people to continue buying houses even as house prices have been rising. “Lower interest rates have partly offset increasing house prices and people have been able to afford to borrow more because repayments have been lower than in previous years.” However, Mr Brereton says that situation could change quickly as rates start increasing and people may find them-

Family space delivered in time for new arrival With a baby boy on the way, time was of the essence for Philippa Stiebel and Chris Smith.

A stork brought a bundle of joy in the New Year, but last Christmas, one expectant family received more than they bargained for thanks to Jag Kitchens.

The Forrest Hill couple had been living in their house for four years and the impending arrival of their firstborn spurred them into action to create the ultimate family space.

As a result, the expecting parents decided to call in the professionals. “We had a friend who had used Jag Kitchens and they recommended we use them,” says Philippa. Travelling to Botany’s Danske Mobler Home Centre, Philippa and Chris met with Jag Kitchens designer Ellie McNae and hit it off. “She was awesome to deal with and had some great solutions – the things that we wanted she made it happen.” They included ample storage for appliances, a bookshelf for cookbooks, as well as a generous island bench.

What’s more, the young family is now complete with the arrival of their young son at the end of January. While the sleepless nights have been a struggle, the kitchen is already proving its worth with the washing and sterilising of milk bottles a breeze.

“The kitchen, living room and dining room were all three separate rooms which was very ’70s,” says Philippa. “The kitchen was a little cove and there was no way to talk to anyone in the lounge.” Although functional, the U-shaped kitchen with its Melteca pale yellow cabinetry and wooden trim appeared to have been a DIY job.

Ellie says it was a challenge to configure all of the necessary components under the island bench. “We needed to fit in a bookshelf, microwave, sink cabinetry, dishwasher, cutlery drawer and rubbish drawer all while staying within the length of a slab of granite, which was quite a mission.” In the end, Ellie tweaked the width of the cutlery drawer as well as the bookshelf with success. “That’s the good thing about Jag, because we offer a custom-built service rather than modular, we could play around with the measurements down

to the millimetre.” It seems perseverance has paid off with the new kitchen the true heart of the home. A black-and-white beauty, it gleams with high-gloss cabinetry, a black granite bench as well as a light strip illuminating the splashback. Three Scandinavian-style pendant lights hover above the island completing the polished look.

Sales numbers for properties sold in excess of $750,000 were also in line with the numbers sold in 2016 and 2015. “Conversely, sales under $750,000 were down a third on those for 2016 and under half those in 2015. “The lower number of sales in the under $750,000 price category brought the median price for the month down to $820,000, its lowest level since May 2016. “The median price in the last three months has declined by 3.1 per cent but remains 11.1 per cent higher than it was 12 months ago. “The number of new listings for February at 2295 was our highest ever in a February and combined with the low number of sales in the month saw available listings at month end at 4546. The last time we had more listings on our books than this was in 2012. Based on buyer interest this situation may be short lived. “At present, the market has

Regional New Zealand is tempting home seekers, while interest in cities such as Auckland and Wellington is declining, says realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. “We’ve seen the cost of Auckland houses moving upwards and now the average asking price for an apartment in the city has hit an all-time high,“ she says. Real-time market statistics from realestate.co.nz show that for the month of February the average asking price for an Auckland apartment hit an alltime high of $711,892, but is still more obtainable than a house in the city (average asking price $950,446). “For many buyers, it could well be a matter of embracing apartment living, accepting the reality of today’s asking prices, or looking to move or invest in another region,” she says. Auckland is experiencing a double digit fall in demand (10.8 per cent), as is Wellington (18.8 per cent). “Demand” is measured by taking the average number of listing views on residential properties over the last three months and comparing it to the same time last year. Real-time demand statistics from realestate.co.nz show that the top regions people are looking are the Hawkes Bay, followed by Otago, Gisborne and Manawatu-Wanganui. The increase in demand in those regions is 7.5 per cent, 8.6 per cent, 17.0 per cent and 23.6 per cent respectively. At the same time the average sales price for properties sold reached a record high of $944,574, marginally higher than the previous record price set in October 2016 of $943,801. “Experience has taught us to be cautious about reading too much into a single month’s trading results, particularly in February when a good portion of the sales relate to property negotiations that took place over the extended holiday break,” said Barfoot & Thompson director, Kiri Barfoot. “What is clear from the results is that prices at the top end of the market were not under downward pressure, with the average sales price increasing by 2.6 percent on the average price for the previous three months. “Compared to February 2016, the average price was 14.9 per cent higher. ocals packed into the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club last week as the club inducted its twelfth official legend. Former Black Cap Kyle Mills was inducted at the ceremony which was attended by fellow club legends, former and current club members and family along with other well-wishers.

Those who played with him at the club recalled his promise as a young player and his dedication to the club both on and off the field. Stories were told, banter was exchanged and many a laugh was had as fellow HPCC legend Kerry Walmsley decided to forgo a traditional speech in favour of a song. Mills told the Times being

inducted as a legend was humbling – although he was shocked he was old enough to qualify as he thought “legends were more for the old fellas”. Mills began playing at the club at age five and said it was nice to be recognised for his efforts over the years. “I remember clearly when I started playing and had my whole cricketing journey here,

War Donkey Golf Day raises funds for local charity A local charity is in full swing for their third edition of The War Donkey Golf Day at Whitford Park Golf Club. The Niki Dow Charitable Trust was set up in memory of Howick local Niki Dow after he was killed as a passenger in a car while working in Portugal in September 2013. Mr Dow was 23 when he lost his life and grew up in Howick attending Bucklands Beach Primary, Bucklands Beach Intermediate and St Kentigern College on a rugby scholarship. He was a promising rugby

ineteen-year-old local, Ainsley Thorpe, snatched herself a silver medal at the Oceania Triathlon Union Junior Championships in Perth over the weekend. Hot weather conditions made for an earlier start for the girl’s races which consisted of a 2 lap swim, 3 lap bike and 4 lap run of the course. Thorpe didn’t have the best start and was slightly behind after lap 1 of the swim. She managed to make up some time after the second lap of the swim and came out of the water fourth only 10 seconds down on the leaders. The first kilometre on the bike

was crucial as she managed to bridge the gap to the leading three athletes alone. Once in the lead group the four girls worked well together and maintained a 50 second gap to the large chase group which had most of the competitors. Heading into the weekend, Thorpe had been focusing on tempo training with some race pace efforts, working on her speed. “Everything had gone to plan in the build-up and I was ready to see what I could do on the day,” she said. It came down to a very close
