HE New Zealand rowing and business communities are feeling a significant loss following the passing of Sir Don Rowlands last Thursday at age 88. Sir Don was a figurehead of NZ rowing, having spent nearly 70 years involved in the sport. In 1950, he won a silver medal in the men’s rowing eight at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, which was followed by gold in the single sculls at the 1954 Games in Vancouver. Following his success on the water, Sir Don became a renowned leader and climbed the ranks of both national and international rowing organisations. He was chairman of the organising committee for the 1978 World Rowing Championships at Karapiro, and for the 2010 event at the same

He was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2015 New Year Honours. Sir Don’s funeral is being held tomorrow at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell.

NEWS BITES Driver named in fatal crash An 18-year-old man died after his car collided into a pole in Ardmore last Thursday morning. Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash just before 8.15am and found Brandon Rowe, a former Howick College student, dead at the scene. Brandon, a student at the Manukau Institute of Technology, was the sole occupant of a white Mazda Familia. The crash resulted in road closure for several hours while emergency workers cleared the scene. Officer in charge of the Counties Manukau Police Serious Crash Unit, sergeant Mark Fleming, says that it appears that the Mazda lost control and crashed into a power pole. “No other vehicles were involved in the crash. However we are interested to hear from anyone who may have seen the Mazda in Clevedon or on the AlfristonArdmore Road at any time prior to the crash, which was around 8am.� It is also believed that one or two vehicles stopped at the scene of the crash before police arrived. “It is important for us to speak with anyone who may have been at the crash scene at any point,� says Sergeant Fleming. “Tragically a young man has lost his life in this crash and our thoughts are with his family at this time.� People with information about the crash can contact the Serious Crash Unit on 2611302 or the anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.

Three-car pile-up A car that swerved onto a Botany Downs median grass strip caused a three-vehicle pile-up resulting in road closure last Thursday afternoon. The crash occurred near the intersection of Te Irirangi and Haven Drives, opposite Botany Town Centre at about 3.15pm and was believed to be caused by a driver of a Nissan Sentra with a medical condition. Emergency services including police, Otara station firefighters and St John Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene of the crash involving two 4WDs. The driver of the Nissan was taken to hospital for medical observation and another person involved was also taken to hospital but discharged without serious injuries.

Before the day, the children were invited to take part in a writing competition. A prayer written by eightyear-old Holly Pukeiti was selected to be printed on the back of the school commemoration bookmark. The cross will now hang in the school’s information centre for all to enjoy.

Come rain or cyclone the Tamaki River Festival, focussed on improving water safety awareness, went ahead as scheduled on March 15.
While there was a good response from the local water sports clubs and cultural centres, the weather warnings may have kept a lot of people at home.
Held at the Bramley Drive Reserve with the river as a backdrop, the locale for the Tamaki River festival was breathtaking.
The signature event, funded by the Howick Local Board, was a great effort to get the community together.
COMMUNITY EVENT: The Tamaki River Festival included water safety education and sheer fun.
College monitors coast life A
N EAGER group of students from Macleans College became the first school in Auckland to join the ‘Adopt-a-Coast’ project last Saturday. The Enviro-group of the college adopted Eastern Beach during the ‘Adopt-a-Coast’ event. They collected some litter from the beach, and used a range of monitoring equipment, such as quadrant squares and sieves, to see what lived on the mud flats. Guided by the ‘Our Seas Our Future’ (OSOF) Auckland regional
coordinator, Rhian Ingley, 20 students discovered a range of marine critters including mud crabs, whelks and worms. The ‘Adopt-a-Coast’ project is run by the marine conservation and advocacy group, OSOF, to encourage students to ‘adopt’ an area of coastline by visiting it regularly, keeping it clean, and monitoring the intertidal species found in the area. The project involves carrying out a small coastal clean-up and incorporates the University of Otago’s ‘Marine Metre Squared’, a citizen
science initiative that makes it easy for anyone to monitor the life found in rocky and muddy shores. The aim is to have schools or community groups take particular interest in one part of their coast and to visit it fairly often to clean it up and monitor any changes happening at that location. Students also have the opportunity to learn about how pollution has an impact on the oceans and coasts and about the animals that live on the sea shore and the environmental conditions they deal with.
Many of Auckland’s east coast beaches have fisheries restrictions on them which includes monitoring activities, so it’s important to check with the Ministry of Primary Industries before conducting individual surveys. OSOF is a New Zealand based nonprofit marine conservation organisation with branches in Auckland and Dunedin. Its members are a group of individuals who are passionate about protecting New Zealand’s coastal and marine environment.

Marsh’s first to go 300mph By Daniel Silverton THERE is little left to achieve in New Zealand drag racing for East Auckland’s Marsh Motorsport. The Howick father-son combination of team boss Tony and driver Anthony Marsh has made history again by being the first Kiwis to break the 300 mile per hour barrier over the quarter mile. At the drag racing nationals at Meremere on the weekend, Anthony guided the Mount Shop top fuel dragster to a 4.87-second pass, reaching 307mph. Earlier in the year, the Marshs were the first to go under five seconds, another of a number of drag racing records and feats they possess. “It feels very good,” Anthony, 27, told the Times. “The crew was absolutely ecstatic. “It’s a lot of weight off our shoulders. The four-second pass was the big thing. “We knew once we’d done a four-second pass, the 300mph would come easily, which it did. We knew what we had to do. “We always knew we’d get there, it was whether we’d get there first.” There are only two top fuel dragsters in New Zealand, with the Marshs competing against Auckland’s Reece Fish, of Fish Family Racing. Both have 8000horsepower supercharged engines, which run on nitromethane fuel. “We were quite worried

Reece was going to do it before us,” says Anthony. “He had everything there to do it.” As if going 300mph doesn’t sound scary enough, the car got perilously close to the trackside wall in the record-setting drive. “Looking at the photos and footage, it was a lot closer than I thought,” says Anthony. “It started drifting towards the wall, and if you’re too aggressive on the steering wheel that’s when you can roll it. “I slowly corrected it and tried to stay in the groove. “I’d rather not do that again, to be honest.” The 300mph mark was achieved in the first of three passes at the meet, and was enough to give Anthony his first national title. “300mph is more important by a mile,” he
says. “I would rather lose the meeting and do the 300mph.” However, in the final run, an engine malfunction caused major damage. “We have a lot of sore parts now. We’ll be working seven days a week to pay for a lot of wrecked gear.” The next notch on the tool belt to tick off is reaching 500 kilometres per hour (311mph). “In drag racing, 300mph is a big deal. 300mph is more important than 500kph. “But people in New Zealand [outside of drag racing] have no idea what 300mph is. “That’s why the 500kph would be a nice barrier to break. The rest of the world understands 300mph. “Go over 500kph and no one will care, apart from in NZ.”

Iconic festival run for many cultures P
RIME Minister John Key, along with the Pacific Peoples Minister, Peseta Sam Lotu-liga attended the 40th anniversary of the iconic ASB Polyfest. “I can’t think of anything that’s much more significant for youngsters than being able to come along over the course of four days and get to meet a whole lot of new friends, and engage in activities,” Mr Key said of the Maori and Pacific Island secondary schools festival that kick-started on March 18. The Prime Minister and Minister of Pacific Peoples visited the second day of the
four-day festival to see kapa haka performances on the Te Whare Wanaga o Awanuiarangi Maori Stage. Twelve kapa haka groups performed on stage in the division three competition last Thursday. Another stage that came live at the festival was the diversity stage which has its own place at the Polyfest. Stage co-ordinators Sarah Woods and Ranee Prasad said: “The huge growth in the ACG Diversity Stage represents the changing cultural face of Auckland. “The stage accepts all cultural groups that fall outside
the Maori and Pacific Island stages, giving a wide range of cultures the opportunity to showcase themselves at the ASB Polyfest.” The diversity stage at the Manukau Sports Bowl featured 20 Indian cultural groups, followed by six Fijian groups, five African and Filipino groups each, and four Korean groups. Other groups included Mongolian, Tibetan and Chinese Lion Dance groups. Another highlight of the Polyfest was the primary and intermediate schools day which saw 400 students from Auckland have their own cultural experience.

LUB tennis is returning to Whitford. After a long hiatus, the Whitford Tennis Club is being re-established. The club was founded in 1901 on private courts situated behind the Whitford Store, now a car park area. Public courts and the club’s pavilion were opened at Whitford Memorial Sports Ground in 1957. Secretary Amanda Hopkins believes club activity ceased in the 1980s. “What happens with tennis clubs is they do rely on volunteers,” she says. “If you have a couple of families who are big on tennis move away, these things can die out.” Fellow committee member Melanie McKenzie says: “People remember playing here. There is so much history. It is one of the oldest clubs in Auckland.” The rejuvenation of the club is
in association with the Whitford Community Charitable Trust, which is providing funding, with help from Auckland Council. “The trust is always looking for ways to bring the community together, and we thought, ‘why not get the tennis club going again’,” says Hopkins. As such, the focus will be on social tennis, and introducing new players, especially juniors, to the sport. “We have a big committee of enthusiastic people,” says McKenzie. “People are keen to see what’s happening with the old tennis club. “There is a buzz around the community that something is happening here. It will be a good way to introduce people new to the Whitford community.” The four courts at the domain are being resurfaced, and the clubhouse is getting a do-up, upon receiving a lease from the council.
There are also plans for a volley wall, and to make repairs to the fencing and spectators gazebo. The Franklin Local Board has contributed $20,000 towards the cost. Hopkins and McKenzie, who travel to play for clubs outside the area, are looking forward to playing locally. “It’s an exciting project,” says Hopkins. Whitford residents were canvassed by email through various community groups, and the club received more than 100 expressions of interest. Around 60 people are taking part in an inaugural fundraising tournament this Sunday, to be played on a dozen private courts around Whitford, with the prize-giving at Turanga Creek Winery. “We have had a good response to first fundraiser,” says McKenzie. “We’ll definitely be open by the next summer season.”

AFTER 38 years, Tom Kroon’s Music doors will close for the last time on March 31. Starting in an attic near the Monterey Apartments, Tom Kroon’s business has grown to be one of Auckland’s top music businesses. Over the years, the Kroons have encouraged the development of music throughout East Auckland, providing space in their building for tuition, sound recording, and supplying equipment to local schools and churches. Coming from a long line of teachers and businesspeople, Tom’s mix of skills proved to be valuable. There was nothing but dirt and gravel surrounding the store when he began, Tom says, and the establishment of new shops nearby was just a “hole in the ground”. In the early days, he would play his keyboard outside to lure passers-by off the main street. This continued through the years as his daughters, Elizabeth Hills and Monique Sandford, became more involved as Mr and Mrs Kroon pulled back. Doubt about posture

XPERTS at the Auckland High Court have disagreed about the position of Shalvin Prasad when he was doused with petrol and set alight. Shivneel Shahil Kumar (21) and Bryne Permal (22) went on trial on March 2 charged with the murder of the Botany Pak’n Save worker. The Dannemora resident’s body was found smouldering in McRobbie Road, Franklin in 2013. The co-accused have pleaded not guilty to the charge and Kumar’s defence lawyer, Ron Mansfield made his case last week, presenting witness Stephen Andrews who appeared in court via video link last Thursday. Mr Andrews, a British fire expert, disagreed with Crown witness and Californian fire expert, John DeHaan who earlier testified in the trial saying Mr Prasad had been upright, in either a standing or sitting position when he was set alight. Mr DeHaan said this was because of the lack of burnt fabric found on Mr Prasad’s body, particularly in the areas of his upper back and buttocks which were relatively unharmed by the fire. The ground also revealed two patches corresponding to those areas which were relatively unburnt. Mr DeHaan, who in his field of
research has set human cadavers (corpses) on fire using petrol, earlier said: “If [the fire] hasn’t gotten hot enough to char the ground cover, then where’s the clothing?� Mr Andrews answered that the biggest piece of debris sandwiched between Mr Prasad and the forest floor could have been underpants as it was the right shape and size and material. There were also remnants of polyester around his neck and right shoulder, he said. Mr Andrews said Mr DeHaan may not have considered the fact that Mr Prasad’s shirt could have ridden up while being transported to the site where he was burnt, or
that a red polyester top that Mr Prasad was believed to be wearing could have shrunk and melted into the surrounding areas. The pool pattern was consistent with Mr Prasad lying down and there was no evidence of a struggle or Mr Prasad resisting the fire, Mr Andrews said. If he was conscious and restrained, he would still attempt to move or roll. To his professional knowledge, Mr Andrews said the only conscious burn victims that did not move were those that intentionally set themselves on fire. The trial continues and is expected to conclude this week.
Finding beauty in the landscape AFTER living in Berlin for six years, photographer Conor Clarke is the new Auckland regional parks artist in residence. Conor will live and work in Waitawa Regional Park from mid-October to mid-December 2015. Councillor Alf Filipaina, chair of the council’s Arts, Culture and Events Committee, says Conor’s selection is based on her talent and a well-researched, unusual and eloquent application. “I am also delighted to welcome the born and bred south Aucklander back to her roots.� Conor grew up at Clarks Beach, attended high school in Papakura, and studied in Auckland at Elam School of Fine Arts. The numbers of dwellings sold is down ďŹ ve per cent to 165 from 174 in February last year.
Colleen Milne, chief executive of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) says activity across the region remains ďŹ rm, with strong open homes attendances and plenty of buyer interest across all price points.
However, the number of median days it took to sell a property dropped by one or three per cent to 33 in February compared with 34 the same time last year. Peter Thompson, Barfoot & Thompson’s managing director says choice is on the menu for buyers.
“The trend in the median price continues to improve, although the volume trend is still falling,â€? she says. “The days to sell trend has now moved from falling to easing and the overall trend for the region is steady.â€? The Eastern Beaches market is following the regional trend with the median price February up 14 per cent at $868,500 compared with $762,500 the same time last year, according to REINZ ďŹ gures.
“With choice far greater [in February] since November, “some prices eased and buyers showed more caution about paying over-the-top amounts to secure properties,� he says. New listings were the highest in 16 months. While demand levelled for more expensive houses, those valued in the low or mid-range brackets attracted most interest.

DISPUTE RESOLUTION TALKS HOMEOWNERS have until April 9 to make a submission on the Government’s intention to make dispute resolution schemes more accessible in disputes over insurance claims. Paul Goldsmith, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister says consideration is being given to increasing the compensation cap from $200,000 to $350,000.
“Under this proposal, dispute resolution schemes will be able to consider cases where the insurer and the customer are seeking to resolve a claim discrepancy,� he says. “Currently disputes over $200,000 must be referred to the High Court which many people may not be able to afford.�
Dispute resolution, he says, is an independent, less formal and cheaper alternative to the Court system. A decision on increasing the compensation cap will be made in the middle of this year and anyone with a dispute dating back to August 2010 will be able to take advantage of the change.

Bucklands Beach win cup BUCKLANDS Beach Tennis Club is the winner of this year’s Charman Cup. The prestigious tournament was started in 1985 by local tennis identity Joy Charman. It is contested by junior players aged 11-15 from the Sunnyhills, Cockle Bay, Pakuranga, Howick and Bucklands Beach clubs. There are 20 players in each team, 10 boys and 10 girls. The play on March 15 was completed before Cyclone Pam arrived, with Bucklands Beach finishing ahead of Sunnyhills, and Cockle Bay in third.

Call to attend sports forum SPORTS clubs and schools are invited to attend the second Howick Sport Forum this Sunday from 9am to 1pm at Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Representatives from 26 organisations went to the inaugural forum in 2013, where sporting Barry George issues were canvassed and discussed. The forums are an initiative of the Howick Local Board and delivered by Counties Manukau Sport. Howick Local Board sport and recreation portfolio holder John Spiller and board member Garry Boles will John Spiller share views from the Howick Sports Plan. There will be two workshops. Kim Squire from Auckland Council will explain the funding opportunities available, and there will also be advice on recruiting, retaining and recognising volunteers. Auckland Aktive’s Simon Kent will be in attendance and will update on the coaching initiatives they are delivering across the city. A local club who has been very successful in membership growth and community involvement will present on how they operate. Counties Manukau Sport’s Barry George says: “It will be a great opportunity to network with local like-minded sports people.� There will also be a guest speaker, and lunch will be provided. FOUR Saint Kentigern College pupils have been chosen to trial for the New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) netball team. Sydney Fraser, Amorangi Malesala, Christina Oscar and Mererangi Paul are among 24 players in line for the team, to be coached by Julie Seymour and Mary Jane Araroa. A trial camp is being held next month, with the final squad to contest the TransTasman under-19 tournament against Australian A and B and Aotearoa Maori in Rotorua in May. “For a lot of the players, the three-day camp is the first step on the pathway to a potential career playing netball,� says Seymour. “The key is for them all to come prepared and focused and ready to fight for their spot in the team.� St Kents opens its netball season today against Auckland Girls’ Grammar School (AGGS) in the national college competition. The competition is played in a knockout format and features 18 teams, inupper north island, lower north island and south island sections. The section winners and second-placed upper north island team qualify for the semi-final round. SAAC Grainger’s dogged journey to rowing’s elite level is testament to doing what you love and never giving up. The former Edgewater College pupil has been named in the New Zealand men’s eight crew to contest the world championships later this year. “I was relieved more than anything,� Grainger told the Times, of his selection. “I put quite a bit of pressure on myself to make it. I was stoked, but relieved was the overwhelming emotion.� The 22-year-old started rowing when he was 15, after being shoulder-tapped by Edgewater principal and rowing coach Allan Vester because of his height. However, it would be years until he tasted success. “In the final year [at Edgewater], me and my doubles partner made the A final at the North Island Secondary School champs. That was the peak of our achievements. “I think back and try to remember what kept me going those first few years and I’m not really sure. “I enjoy the challenge of pushing limits and testing yourself. “Although it sounds weird, there is something enjoyable about going out on the water and putting yourself in some pain and having a really good session.� Originally a double and single sculler, his representative potential was first recognised with selection in an age-group provincial squad.

His passion for hard work continued his progression, and in 2013-14 he was part of the New Zealand under-23 men’s eight to win consecutive world titles. Fourteen rowers trialled for the elite eight, with seven of the under-23 team getting picked to make the step up. “I can remember walking around the boat park at Karapiro when I was at school, seeing the guys in the New Zealand team and thinking they were amazing and I’d never be able to reach that level,� says Grainger. “Over time, it’s happened and it’s exciting.� The aim for the world champi-

onships, which start in August in France, is a top five finish, which would qualify New Zealand for the 2016 Olympics. “It’s a very real goal and we are working hard towards it, but it feels surreal at the same time. [The Olympics] is such a pinnacle event and is quite monumental. “Thinking you could be there one day, you don’t quite believe it. “I’ll do everything to get there though.� It is more than 30 years since New Zealand last sent a men’s eight to the Olympic Games, in 1984. New Zealand won gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics, followed
by bronze in 1976 at Montreal. “We definitely want to recreate the success New Zealand has had in the eight in the next few years... that adds to the prestige and excitement of what we’re doing.� Grainger is the first Edgewater student to make a national squad. “We’re delighted,� says Vester. “The secret of Isaac’s success is he hasn’t given up. “He didn’t win a medal at Maadi [national secondary school champs], he didn’t immediately find success in representative squads. He actually had to keep working hard, and he got there. It is an absolute tribute to him.�
