Unsafe bus stop back on agenda D

espite going back to the drawing board at Howick Local Board’s behest, Auckland Transport is continuing its plans to relocate the bus stop at the intersection of Picton Street and Ridge Road further down Ridge Road at the base of Stockade Hill. Local residents fear the move is an accident waiting to happen. Rather than crossing busy Ridge Road to reach Picton Street, AT says people could cross Picton Street a short distance up from the Ridge Road junction. But, says local resident, Robert Finley, since when would teenagers in a hurry take longer route? “Kids being kids” are likely to take the most direct route by crossing the four lanes of traf-

fic over a series of islands at the intersection which Mr Finley regards as positively dangerous. Meanwhile AT has now released proposed improvements to the intersection and is calling for feedback by June 8. It wants to install a new pedestrian refuge island on Picton Street, connecting between Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve and install new pram crossings adjacent to the refuge island. It also has a similar plan for the intersection of Mellons Bay and the top of Picton Street at the base of Stockade Hill. But Mr Finley says: “It’s clear this latest preposterous proposal has been generated solely by the proposed shift of the bus stop. It

will then convey a false degree of safety/respectability to bus users that simply won’t exist.” AT says the relocation project was initiated to remove the bus stop from the left-turn lane on Picton Street and in response to requests from Howick and Eastern Bus Company. In a letter to AT Mr Finley says: “You have at least now had the courage to admit that this whole stupid idea emanated from the bus company, all to save 16 seconds and omit one give-way sign, dressed up as an accessibility issue.” The proposal, he says, is ill thought-out and creates a major safety risk for every user at the location. “I trust that when the inevitable

serious injury accident, or worse, occurs to a bus user here, AT will put its hand up and admit: “It was all our fault and we did it to save 16 seconds.” Howick Local Board chairman David Collings says the board has been against the Ridge Road bus stop site from the start. “Our concern is that people getting off the bus in Ridge Road will have to walk across a busy road to get to the village. It’s frustrating and we don’t really agree with the rationale behind the change.”

Police are reminding the elderly to be wary of online dating scams. A caller to the Times is worried about “a couple of elderly friends” who are being preyed on in a romance/sweetheart scam. They are being asked for money transfers and being called by email and the phone almost daily, the caller – who asked to remain anonymous, said. She says the lonely elderly are being preyed upon. “It’s like an addiction and they are being hooked,” the caller said. A police spokesperson told the Times: “Police would urge anyone who believes they have been victim of a scam to contact police. Remember, if something

How online dating scams work You’re looking for friendship or love. Aren’t we all? Someone starts connecting with you through a dating service. You like chatting with them and become interested. You get to know the person, perhaps over weeks or months. You start to feel a really strong bond. All of a sudden they need some money – a personal crisis… just a short-term loan. You trust them so you want to help. They’ll probably have a convincing story. You send them money. Before long they ask for more – then more, and more, and more. Soon you’ve handed over all of your savings. Or worse still, you

borrow money to bail them out. Once they’ve taken all they can, your new love will disappear and your money will be gone. No one wants to think that they could be taken advantage by an internet dating scam, and yet hundreds of people are every single year.

‘We did it for Shauna’ A

Howick fire squad raised $16,909 in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge, coming 11th out of 234 NZ brigades. The team climbed in support of 10-year-old Howick local Shauna Manning who has been battling with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) since 2010. She was four when diagnosed and, after 22 months, treatment delivered remission. However she was re-diagnosed with ALL last August and started treatment in readiness for a bone marrow transplant in February. The fire crew of nine took on Shauna’s cause. Steve Flett, in his fifth climb, achieved his fastest time of 15 minutes 14 seconds in the Grand Masters section. Richard McLaren made the top-100 overall, placing 97th with a time of 14 min 26 sec. In addition he helped a fellow fire fighter who was having issues with a mask. Sixtytwo-year-old Gary Dyason smashed a 22 min time while Tom Gerrard was in the top 105 with a time of 14 min 36 sec. Karl Bishop raised a staggering $5006 while Andrew Hills completed the climb in 20 min 14 sec. Kaileigh Howard was 15th out of 73 women competing in the ‘donned and started’ group and Eamonn Guinan, at 17 min 48 sec, was joint equal with Kaileigh in the brigade.

Blackmailer admits charges The man behind the 1080 infant milk formula contamination scare has admitted five drugs charges. Jeremy Kerr – from Mellons Bay – was sentenced in March in the High Court at Auckland to eight-and-a-half years in jail. Media this morning reported Kerr appeared in the High Court today where guilty pleas were entered to one charge of supplying a class C drug, and four charges of possession of a class C drug with intent to supply it. He will be sentenced in July. All of the charges related to offending

Kerr, 60, had the country on high alert in 2014 after he posted anonymous letters to Fonterra and Federated Farmers threatening to contaminate baby formula milk powder with 1080 poison, unless the Government agreed to stop using the pest poison by March 2015. It was revealed in March that Kerr’s

blackmail attempts had cost Fonterra, Federated Farmers, supermarket chain Foodstuffs, police, the Government and other dairy companies $37 million in investigation and increased security costs. Justice Geoffrey Venning in March ruled following a disputed facts hearing that the Crown had proved “beyond reasonable doubt” that Kerr sought to gain financially when he wrote anonymous threat letters to Fonterra and Federated Farmers in 2014. He owed nearly half a million dollars to creditors.

Aggravated robbery in East Tamaki

Police are hunting for a man who allegedly robbed a local petrol station at knifepoint last night. They are also seeking a woman for questioning in relation to the robbery. Police said a man entered the Z Service Station on Ti Rakau Drive, East Tamaki at around 7.50pm on Monday. “The offender has taken off with a small sum of money and other items after threatening the service station worker with a knife,” police said. “He has then left in the direction of Torrens Road.” Police are now wanting to identify the woman pictured, who was in the area at the time. “We believe she can assist us with our enquiries.” ■■ If anyone has any information they can contact Detective Sergeant John love at Ormiston Police Station on 261-1300.

Ferry problems explained By Marianne Kelly Fullers Group chief executive Doug Hudson has hit back at criticism of passengers being regularly left behind at the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal. In last week’s Howick and Pakuranga Times Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman, Keith Ingram said current passenger ferry services were inadequate and not keeping pace with demand. In a letter read out by Mr Ingram to a

public meeting at Half Moon Bay this week, Mr Hudson expressed concern about the comment. On two occasions in May, he said, some passengers were unable to board. The regular boat was undergoing an annual survey so capacity was reduced. Because of operational constraints, a large vessel could not be provided as an alternative. “The Half Moon Bay service continues to grow, but has slowed in recent years, with lack of car parks

contributing,” he said. “Fullers has a long history of ongoing investment and has extended its weekend service. “The company is close to [re]tendering for the service and if successful will have the certainty to invest and put on extra routes.” Mr Ingram said what was not picked up on was the lack of continuity between buses and ferries. “We have buses leaving before the ferry arrives or after the ferry has left. This is not acceptable.”

Whitford forest block up for sale A

vast block of Whitford forest is on sale. There was a sense of excitement as it was a time to announce the results after three days of brainstorming and coming up with business ideas. Facilitator of MaiBiz, Mark Douglas had cleverly managed to introduce students to financial literacy and a sense of entrepreneurship in a fun way. What really lies on the other side? The Departure Lounge prepares you for the afterlife By FARIDA MASTER

ot many people like to deal with death. While everyone talks about life, hardly anyone discusses the end of our journey. Helping people prepare others for their final journey is a trained naturopath and spiritual healer of 25 years, Gail Nicholls, along with her friend Vernie Rungan, who has been volunteers at Hospice from a very young age. The spiritually-inclined duo met years ago at a meditation circle that Howick resident Mrs Nicholls has been running for many years. When she came up with the idea of a Departure Lounge to help people understand death, Mrs Rungan was there to support her. “A lot of people who are on the brink of passing over, don’t let go. They are afraid of what lies ahead,” says the trained hypnotist who also takes people through their death by hypnosis. “It gives them an idea of how blissful it is on the other side and helps them overcome their fear of dying,” she says. “A lot of families also find it very difficult to let their loved ones move on. Especially, if it is

a young child,” says the spiritual healer and counsellor. Botany resident Mrs Rungan who has a day job with Steel and Tube and used to spend time at Hospice, reaching out to residents, giving them a massage and helping them tidy up by doing the biographies says: “It’s open to anyone who is experiencing it or wishes to understand death or illness in the family. “We also hope to take away the guilt from those who feel they have not done enough for the person who is passing over.

Everyone has their own journey to make,” she says. The Departure Lounge is held at the Highland Park Community House on the first and third Sunday of the month and is absolutely free of charge. Mrs Nicholls says that the Departure Lounge has no religious connotation and that anyone can come along and share or be there just out of curiosity to find out what lies on the other side. “We explain to people that the soul never dies. It is just the body that takes a new vehicle. So far those who have got to know about it through word of mouth have been just turning up for an open discussion even before we officially launched it.” Mrs Rungan says that they empathise and support the terminally ill who find it hard to come to terms with death. “We pick up their energies, understand their grief, and help them cope.” ■ Where: Highland Park Community House, 47 Aviemore Drive ■ When: First and third Sunday of the month ■ Time: 3pm- 4.30pm. Investing in a growing economy Last week Bill English delivered the Budget for the coming year. Budget 2016 sees substantial investment in health and education and more support for businesses to create jobs on the back of a growing economy. Our eighth Budget forecasts rising surpluses and falling debt, with the economy expected to grow at around 3 per cent over the next four years. This means more jobs and higher incomes and more government support for Kiwis through better public services. As our economy continues to grow we now have choices we simply did not have eight years ago. Budget 2016 supports four significant measures, including ■ $761 million for Innovative New Zealand – a package of science, skills and regional development initiatives to help grow and diversify the economy. ■ $2.1 billion for public infrastructure package focused on transport and schools. ■ $652 million for a Social Investment package to help the most at-risk New Zealanders lead better lives. ■ An additional $2.2 billion for the health sector over four years to ensure New Zealanders continue to have access to highquality healthcare. Our focus remains on achieving better results for Kiwis and their families from almost $80 billion in existing

A strong economy allows us to invest more in priority public services such as increased access to next-generation medicines, more elective surgeries and support for at-risk students in schools. In addition, we are establishing a new national bowel screening programme worth $39 million. New Zealand has made significant progress over the past eight years. As a country, we’re more confident and our economy is growing. Our challenge over the next few years is to stay on course with a policy programme that’s working for all New Zealanders. Clara Browne is known as ‘the lady who walks’ By Marianne Kelly

lara Browne is well known at the Summerset Retirement Village in Flat Bush as “the lady who walks”. She has always walked and, in her 100-year lifetime, never learned to drive a car. “I never really wanted to,” she says. Mrs Browne turned 100 on May 16, celebrating it the following weekend with her family at the retirement village and her other family, the folks at the Salvation Army Church in Otahuhu. Growing up in Waihi she harboured a dream to go to teachers’ college. But the 1930s depression had taken hold and teacher training was closed down. “So I worked in an office, but I never liked it. It was disappointing.” The job was in her uncle’s garage office where he was a mechanic but never kept any books.“So I had to sort them out. I had done a year commercial course at high school. I stayed at school because there were no jobs.” Her husband-to-be, Les Browne lived just around the block and the pair were classmates at school. Mrs Browne recalls a standard four photograph with Les sitting at her feet. “I knew his older brother better. I remember kicking him in the shins and sending him home in tears.” She was in her early 20s when she got to know Les well through the combined youth group run by the Salvation Army and Baptist Churches. They were married in the

Mrs Browne joined him and they lived in the tiny town until the sawmill burned down. As part of the Government’s Manpower Scheme to place people in essential industries, Mr Browne was sent to the Otahuhu railway workshops in Auckland. The pair rented a State Advances house for 15 years until they built their own in Otahuhu. Browne carried on the business. “I didn’t mind. It was hard work.” But when he died suddenly in the early 60s, the couple had just finished their first tomato pick of the season. Mrs Browne completed the season on her own with the help of many friends – “surprisingly from people I didn’t expect”. “I didn’t want to keep on with it so I sold the property.” She moved to a small town house in Papatoetoe where she looked after herself until seven years ago when she moved to a Summerset apartment. When, two years ago, illness “took the steam out of her”, son Peter says, she moved into the retirement village care centre. These days she does the crossword every morning with Peter before they take their daily walk around the village. “I never bought a dress until I was over 60. I was always a sewer and a knitter,” she says. She made wedding dresses for her daughter and daughterin law and knits socks for the entire family. Peter says: “We couldn’t wear them out as fast as she gave them to us and there wouldn’t be many people these days walking around in handknitted socks.” The lady who did her own tax returns until she was in her 90s says: “I’ve had a good life. Neither of my children ever caused me problems.” She celebrated her centenary with her son Peter and his wife Lenore of Manurewa, her daughter Adrienne and her husband Ron, of Bombay, along with her seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom visit her regularly.

Cost of city’s water on way up SuperCity water and wastewater services will go up by an average 2.5 per cent on July 1. Consequently an average household’s combined water and wastewater charges will increase by about $1.75 a month. Watercare chief executive Raveen Jaduram says the increase is in line with the company’s commitment to being a minimum-cost service provider. Prices will

increase from $1.409 to $1.444 (including GST) per 1000 litres for all customers. Fixed wastewater charges for domestic customers will rise by $5 to $205 a year and from $2.394 to $2.454 per 1000 litres of wastewater discharged. The price rise is necessary to cover increased service delivery costs, along with infrastructure renewals and expansion that support

development across the region. “Construction costs, in particular, have increased at a rate much higher than those measured in the Consumer Price Index,” he says. Auckland’s population is predicted to grow by one million people in the next 30 years and Watercare forecasts a $4.9 billion spend on capital investment over the next 10 years to support the growth.

he Salvation Army is doing a recce as they intend to start services to the community in Flat Bush. Lieutenant Jessica Londhe and husband Lieutenant Ameet Londhe have been appointed as the new Salvation Army leaders for the Flat Bush Community. Officers for Flat Bush outpost, East City Corps, extending the tent pegs of East City Corps Howick to Flat Bush, Ameet and Jessica are currently doing an environmental and need-assessment scan of the bustling Flat Bush area. “The Salvation Army – New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga Territory is intending to extend our services in Flat Bush, through the property at the corner of Chapel Road and Baverstock Oaks Road,” says Ameet, pastor of the church. They are meeting key people and influencers in the area and trying to establish what is it that the emerging community needs. The couple have been invested with the responsibility to start a new Salvation Army Church and Community Services on the five

Or then is it a mini golf course or a cafe with healthy food options along with other social services? “We want to have a bigger picture of how we can complement the resources in the community as well as reach out to an over-arching need,” she says. He brings years of experience in social services and currently he is the Justice of the Peace for New Zealand. here’s a reason why the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village has been dubbed the Howick Hilton. A high proportion of the people living at the Chapel Road complex have come from established homes and communities within the Howick area. “Our residents are likeminded people,” sales adviser Catherine Booth says. “They’ve moved from their home in Howick to retain a similar village feel here. Some have attended local schools and grown up with each other.” It’s one of the reasons why the Village puts on a ‘shout’ with a weekly ‘happy hour’ where residents in the apartments can invite their family and friends. Village manager Philip Hanson says aged care can be territorial. “People want to remain local.” Construction of the Bruce McLaren Village was completed at the end of last year with the final Austin independent apartment block. The complex includes twoand three-bedroom independent apartments plus one-bedroom serviced apartments and a rest home, hospital and dementia unit on three floors. Ancillary facilities include the bar/lounge, library,

snooker room, gym and heated swimming pool, private cinema and a well-equipped ‘man cave’ for the DIY enthusiast. It’s also one of the first Ryman villages in the country to install seven generators so that the entire site can run without interruption in the event of a power outage. Approximately 450 people live there and 175 staff work on the site. A man-made pond with waterfall is attracting a team of male residents who gather on the pontoon to run their remote controlled boats. Those with green fingers can gather at the vegetable garden which involves five raised boxed plots. ‘Continuum of care’ is a key philosophy of the village, covering all levels, Mr Hanson says. “People come in when they are in their early to mid-70s but then, if their health fails, we are able to help, giving priority to our residents needing a higher level of care.” It means that one spouse may need the care offered by the rest home while the other can remain close by in a serviced apartment. They then can spend the day together. “People don’t age in the same way so we need to anticipate the level of care needed to fulfil our promise to accommo-

date them.” Ms Booth says a lot of effort is put into arranging interesting events and activities catering for residents and involving local people or services – “that’s where you, the Howick and Pakuranga Times, comes in”. “We recently advertised our ‘Dealing Daily with Dementia’ event in the Times and the phone rang hot. An Art Exhibition in March, held in collaboration with the Howick Art Group, is now expected to become an annual event. And the village raised $1700 from a concert last May for the City of Auckland Singers to help them represent New Zealand at this year’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales. As the leak is on private property, Watercare is not responsible for the leak’s repair; we can only inform the owners and, when it affects a road or footpath, Auckland Transport. Finalists in this year’s Estuary Art Awards will share in the event’s 10th anniversary along with showing in the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre’s newly-completed Malcolm Smith Gallery. Entries are open for the awards, the only contemporary art prize in New Zealand with ecology at its core. When the event was started 10 years ago it reflected an academic interest in water bodies which resulted in looking to the then seriously polluted Tamaki Estuary. Current curator Balamohan Shingade says originally paintings were mainly of the estuary, but over the years more innovative and experimental thoughtful work has been submitted. “The paintings have become less didactic and more engaged,” he says. “This year is a big milestone and the most important thing is that it’s open to everyone. This event has a wide focus attracting diverse interpretations and different levels of abilities.” One of the country’s foremost contemporary art critics, Jon Bywater, will judge the entries. Mr Shingade says he has a keen interest in ecology. “A lot of his work is about place – New Zealand’s identity and how the ecology

andlords and property managers in the Auckland region have until June 30 to sign up for a new payment option offered by Watercare that promises to reduce their rental property administration. The new system gives landlords and property managers the opportunity to pay their wastewater fixed charge upfront each year in July. Consequently their monthly bill for the rest of the year will show usage charges only which they can pass on to tenants to pay. The change comes following conversations between Watercare and the Auckland

Property Investors Association (APIA) about how to simplify billing and make charges more transparent for landlords and tenants. Under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, landlords are responsible for fixed charges and tenants for usage (volumetric) charges. Until now, both fixed and usage charges have appeared on the same monthly bill, which means landlords and tenants have been splitting payments. Watercare chief executive Raveen Jaduram says in Auckland, about 40 per cent of people live in tenanted properties, so the impact of

this improvement will be widespread.” “After becoming Auckland’s integrated water utility in 2010 our early focus was on ensuring our customers received high-quality water and wastewater services at standardised prices,” he says. “Having made significant in-roads in those areas, we are driving change through the business to ensure we are responsive to our customers’ needs and easy to engage with. “Working with APIA and developing this new payment option for landlords and property managers is one of a number of cus-

tomer-centric changes we are delivering.” APIA executive officer Andrew King says the change is a good outcome for all concerned and urges all eligible landlords to participate. “Under the current system, some tenants inadvertently end up paying more than they should,” he says. “They will benefit from clarity in knowing exactly how much they are required to pay, while landlords and property managers will benefit from a reduction in the amount of bookkeeping required of them.” Register before June 30.

uperCity house prices aren’t going to drop anytime soon, says Ashley Church, chief executive of the Property Institute of New Zealand. Consequently, he says, a proposed National Policy Statement on urban development directing councils to allow more housing development where necessary won’t achieve what the Government is claiming for it. “Opening up more land is a good thing,” he says. “But any belief that doing so will reduce house prices is naive. We need tens of thousands of new homes in Auckland. So the best that can be hoped for is to reduce that backlog as quickly as possible so as to slow house price inflation down from its current dizzying heights.” He’s given last week’s Budget a qualified pass mark, describing it as “a largely responsible mixture of worthy initiatives and missed opportunities”. The key housing initiatives are $258 million to provide at least 750 more social housing places in Auckland and $100m to free up more Crown land in Auckland for housing. Mr Church says this level of spending is in line with what he would have expected the Government to have done, given its other priorities around health, welfare, education and repayment of debt. “Any Government which touted itself as being able to solve the Auckland housing crisis on its own would need to embark upon a massive State-funded home building programme – and that simply isn’t going to happen while Bill English holds the purse strings”. However, Mr Church says the Government has missed an opportunity to influence the housing market in other ways. “While it is good to see that there has been no repeat of last year’s ill-considered attempts to artificially slow the housing market, and no mention of knee-jerk responses such as land taxes, it’s disappointing that there are no positive initiatives to further encourage the private construction of

new homes.” Mr Church says he would have expected further adjustments around the KiwiSaver Home Start grant and some clever uses of taxation, such as the reinstatement of depreciation incentives for property investors who build new dwellings. “Sadly there doesn’t appear to be much imagination in the measures announced.” ■■ In the wake of the Reserve Bank’s consideration of new lending control measures, including a new Debt-To-Income (DTI) ratio control, Mr Church has repeated his warning that such a policy would have “serious and unintended consequences” for the Auckland property market. “These things often sound like good ideas until you start thinking through what would happen if they were actually implemented,” he says.

The probable consequences of such a policy would be disastrous, he says. “The number of new homes being built – the very thing that Auckland needs most – would plunge as the number of people earning enough to buy them would dwindle to a trickle,” he says. “So the policy could very well kill off the one thing that can fix the Auckland housing crisis – the construction of new homes.” A further barrier to young people looking to buy their first home would be created, “a prospect already made almost impossible by the Reserve Bank clampdown on loan-tovalue lending”. Price inflation in Auckland, he says, is the result of strong demand and a severe lack of supply and the Reserve Banks’ attempts to artificially slow down demand are making the situation much worse.

Add flowers to your plate Edible flowers are a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Reserve a part of the back yard for growing edible flowers but bear in mind a few precautions should be taken. So, before tasting a flower, make sure you know exactly what you’re about to eat. The flowers used to embellish recipes should not have been treated with pesticides. Pick fresh flowers early in the morning when the dew has evaporated or after sunset. Shake them to remove any insects; remove the stamens and rinse with cool water. Place the flowers on a paper towel and when they’re dry, put them in

a plastic container in the fridge. Most flowers will keep for several days. As well as being a beautiful addition to salads and pastries, edible flowers can be used to make herbal tea, lemonade, butter, sauce, syrup or jelly. Guests will be impressed by a couple of fresh flowers sauted quickly and served with a main dish or starter. The flowers could cool drinks by being embedded in ice cubes.

Howick students make New Zealand U18, U22 underwater hockey teams

owick College’s underwater hockey squad are up and coming stars. Six current students and three former students have been selected for the U22 and U18 men’s and women’s underwater hockey teams to represent New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman underwater hockey competition. Year 13 student Farrah BrillHolland, along with former student Emma Bavelaar, were selected for the U22 women’s team while Annabelle

Fletcher Jones, Grace Driscoll and Marieke Bavelaar were selected for the U18 women’s team. Ryan Deen and Logan Stevenson were named in the U18 men’s team while former students Hamish Arthur and Louis Flavell-Birch were selected for the men’s U22 squad. The students will travel to Hobart to compete in the competition in July. The World Championships will be held at the same venue in July 2017.
