HERE is no such thing as a free lunch. Someone has to pay for it,� says Marina Medical Centre GP Dr Bruce Page. He claims Marina Medical Centre cannot afford to participate in the ‘free under 13 scheme’ that 96 per cent of NZ GPs have signed up for. The scheme provides government funding for two consultations per enrolled child each year, however, the child would be allowed unlimited visits. Dr Page said the funding is based on the average fee across practices nationally and that combined with the consultation rate of children at Marina Medical means the scheme is “not economically viable� for the practice. “Each practice is forced to take
the risk that parents will bring their children no more than twice per year because beyond that it is the individual practice that is providing the free care – not the government.â€? He describes the issue of the ‘free under 13 scheme’ as “somewhat peripheralâ€? in proportion to wider problems within the primary care sector caused by under-funded DHBs. Dr Page likens this new government scheme to that which introduced free medical care to children under the age of six and claims that government funding has fallen well short of the costs Marina Medical incurs by providing that service. “Once again the government is trading on the good will of practices to bear the ďŹ nancial burden,â€? he said. Primary healthcare is under immense pressure because the underfunded DHBs cannot provide serv-
ices they once did and that workload has been funnelled back into primary care, he said. “Some of the stuff we are doing is good for our patients – but much of it is just bureaucratic box-ticking that drives us to distraction, and leaves us with less time to deal with the important health issues our patients need help with,� Dr Page said. “There are audits of this, reports about that – all designed to measure how well we are doing but in reality have very little to do with the quality of care we are providing. We’re all exhausted!� Dr Page suggests that other east Auckland medical practices were coerced to sign up for the scheme. “While some local practices have decided to join the scheme, many of these have done so under duress,� he said.
“The wellbeing of New Zealand’s children remains a high priority at our practice. As we have always done, we offer discounted consultation fees (and sometimes free care) for those genuinely in ďŹ nancial need, because we want to make sure everyone gets the medical care they deserve,â€? Dr Page said. The Government plans to review the scheme in a year to ensure the funding is adequately covering doctors’ costs. The NZ Herald reported 44 out of 1012 practices in New Zealand had opted out of the scheme most of which were located in Auckland. EING disabled in not a death sentence. Sadly, a lot of parents of disabled infants are in deep grief as they approach disability advocate Martine Abel for support. The 43-year-old strategic advisor to Auckland Council who is blind is a shining example of life on the fast track. Martine Abel is on her way to Mongolia for an international conference. After bottle-feeding tiger cubs in Thailand, she is looking forward to a camel trek in the sand dunes of Mongolia. Once back, Ms Abel will head for Lisbon, Portugal in July. When she is not jet-setting across the globe, the Strategic Advisor (disability) Auckland Council lives with her husband Gary and her assistance dog Westin at her home in Sunny Hills. She has her hands full as she sits on a number of boards including the National board of Blind Citizens New Zealand, the oldest advocacy organisation in the disability sector. Her raison d’être is to make life better for the less-abled. “While integrated transport is a huge topic in Auckland there is not much political advocacy

in terms of easier accessibility of transport for the disabled,� she points out as she pushes for better services. “The new HOP card doesn’t
tell you when the money is running out. The earlier Snapper card was much more convenient.� That’s just one of the subjects she is vociferous about as Ms Abel is also involved with giving legal advice to the disabled in Auckland in her capacity as chair of Auckland Disability Law, in Mangere. “Though there are a lot of legal aid centres, a lot of them don’t have enough knowledge about the disability sector,� says Ms Abel with qualifications in vision rehabilitation, social policy and psychology. As board member of Disability Connect and the Consumer Network of Health Quality and Safety Commission, a crown entity that looks into health and disability service, she is equally involved with medicine strategy. “As a blind person you want to have bigger labels or labels in Braille. “A lot of times the antihistamines are of the same shape and size which makes it difficult to differentiate. “Sometimes it’s even difficult to tell the ear drops from the eye drops,� she laughs. “Thankfully these days there are cell phone apps like Colour Test and money recognition

On the Asia Pacific board of World Blind Union which works with the World Health Organisation and World Bank, Ms Abel is passionate about better amenities in New Zealand as well as developing countries. Better employment opportunities for people with disabilities is a subject close to her heart. Whether it is an autistic librarian at the Auckland Council, or a life guard with just one arm, she takes pride in their placement and their ability to make a difference. Ms Abel moved to New Zealand 19 years ago from South Africa and is married to Gary who plays international cricket and goalball, a team sport designed for blind athletes “You have to stop the 1.2 kg ball with bells from going into the goal. Everyone is on an equal footing since they are all blind folded,� she explains. Garry met Martine at a game of blind cricket and hit it off instantly. Listening to her talk knowledgeably about the Community Organisation Grants Scheme as well as health passports for New Zealand like the ones in UK, it’s easy to see that she is consumed by a fierce passion and a vision that most of us are blind to.

Helping Koreans to integrate with the locals By Farida Master KOREAN Kiwis are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in New Zealand. According to Census 2013 Statistics New Zealand, there are around 30,172 Koreans in New Zealand and 72 per cent live in Auckland. On seeing the plight of Koreans seniors who were experiencing difficulties integrating with the local community, Yongrahn Park decided to give up her job as Korean coordinator with Age Concern, Counties Manukau and do something about it. She founded Korean Positive Ageing Charitable Trust three years ago to empower Korean seniors to participate fully in the local community. “There are around 3360 Koreans living in Manukau area and I wanted to reach out to them. A lot of them feel isolated because of language barrier and cultural differences. They are not confident of stepping out of their homes,” she says. In an attempt to provide a social, cultural, educational bridge as well as support the Korean elderly, she arranged for positive ageing workshops and a Silver School at the Highland Park Community House.

“Together with some volunteers we provide community based support services on every Friday from 2pm-4pm. We make the seniors aware of all the social service facilities that are available locally and have arranged for speakers from the
Stroke Foundation, District Health Board, Fire Station, St John’s Home Health Care Service, to name a few,” says Ms Park. Depending on the problems they are facing, she points them to the right agency that can help them.
Problems apart, the Korean seniors have their diary full with a host of activities. From field trips to Howick Historical village, Auckland Museum and the Papatoetoe Historical Village to flower arrangements and making
cupcakes, “they have also been learning how to roast vegetables like the Kiwis do,” says Ms Park Ethnic festivals are celebrated with gusto and sometimes with Korean pop dance, Gangnam style. To encourage more social participation amongst the local Koreans and their families, Ms Park has also started a Badminton Club at East Tamaki. The club that meets on every Thursday evening celebrated its first anniversary last week. “The badminton club is open to all, young and old. It’s not restricted to Koreans only. Everyone is welcome. It is more about networking and for everyone who enjoys playing badminton,” she says. The membership which involves two dollars a turn is growing rapidly. “At our Silver School we have members who also come from Henderson and North Shore since they enjoy the sense of community and kinship,” she says. Ms Park who is keen to reach out to a wider migrant community describes her role as a lighthouse that navigates and helps the Koreans in the City of Sails to get fully involved in a new country they call home.
Car flips avoiding cops in Whitford A
POLICE chase in Whitford last Friday ended dramatically when an allegedly stolen vehicle crashed after avoiding road spikes. Counties Manukau Police initially responded to sightings of the car in Whitford that was suspected to have been involved in an earlier burglary. It was later spotted by police on Sandstone Road at around 12.40pm but failed to stop when signalled, and fled the scene.
Officers activated their lights and sirens, pursuing the alleged offenders for about a minute. They then deployed road spikes near the intersection of Whitford Park Road and the vehicle crashed shortly after, overturning in an attempt to avoid the spikes. Emergency services including a Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrived at the scene. Two men were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A 23-year-old woman, who was believed not to be wearing a seatbelt, was hospitalised in serious condition and is now stable. The 26-year-old male driver has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing injury, failing to stop, being unlicensed, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and being unlawfully on a property. The 24-year-old male passenger has been charged with unlawfully getting

Beachlands and Maraetai Beach Medical Centres have chosen not to provide free healthcare for children under 13-years-old despite advertising free appointments online. Websites for both medical practices state that appointments for children under 13 are free, however, both clinics charge about $30 for children’s appointments.

The websites are managed by Healthpoint which claims to provide up-to-date information about healthcare providers. Beachlands and Maraetai Beach Medical Centre practice manager Christine Jones said the information online was incorrect and they were working to have it fixed. “It was an automatic update,” Mrs Jones said, but she could not comment further or explain why the medical centres had opted out of the scheme. The decision had been made by GPs that work in the practices, she said. Both websites continued to
advertise that appointments were free for children under 13 for a further four days before the pages were corrected. The scheme will fund participating GPs for two appointments per enrolled child each year and allow that child an unlimited number of appointments. The scheme is to be reviewed in a year to ensure the funding is adequately covering doctors’ costs. contact and issues changed, but the demand for help has grown exponentially, with Youthline serving 36,000 youths last year, up from 3000 two decades ago. The results come on the 20th anniversary of GSK New Zealand’s partnership with the local service, which sees the pharmaceutical company donate funds and volunteer for Youthline in order to support its work with young people and their families. The service was established in
1970, and has helped hundreds of thousands of young Kiwis. HE issues plaguing the youth of today have grown to encompass sexuality, homelessness and cyberbullying, themes not on the radar 20 years ago, according to helpline service, Youthline. The helpline service received 80,085 contacts from young people seeking support for a variety of issues in 2014-15, with an overwhelming 91 per cent of them texting rather than phoning. Youthline CEO Stephen Bell says the most common way youth are accessing information about sex, drugs, alcohol, depression, stress and health is through the internet. “An important part of Youthline’s work is to ‘normalise’ and destigmatise asking for help, and to provide quality information and support services for those that do reach out. “The service offers a free text number and the ability to email for help as ways to overcome the embarrassment factor,� he says. Along with the way they reach out, the issues young adults are seeking help for have also changed significantly in the past 20 years, says Mr Bell. The top five biggest issues facing young people today are alcohol, drugs, bullying, peer pressure and self-esteem, according to a major survey conducted last year by Youthline. However, Youthline research shows fewer young people smoke cigarettes, binge drink, try marijuana, or engage in risk-taking behaviour such as dangerous or drink driving compared to 14 years ago. “One trend we have highlighted for 2015 is a significant increase in issues related to self-harm and immediate risk of harm from suicide.

OOKING to fund a project, activity or event that will make a positive contribution to your community? Applications for community grants from most local boards open this month, the first under Auckland Council’s new community grants policy. “This is the first time we have had a regional policy with a consistent programme of grants – so this first round of applications is a major milestone for the council,” says Councillor George Wood, chair of the regional strategy and policy committee. “The application process is a lot more streamlined especially for those applying for small amounts through quick response grants

programmes.” Quick response grants are for community groups or organisations only requiring small amounts, generally less than $2000. Every local board, which offers quick grants, has set thresholds for the minimum and maximum amounts available. Those with larger projects can apply to a local board grants programme. All grants programmes support arts and culture, community development, environment and natural heritage, historical heritage, events and sport and recreation projects. Another significant change from July this year is local boards will be considering applications against
priorities and outcomes identified in their local board plans. “This is a way local boards can ensure that they are funding projects – activities or events – to align with its aspirations for creating vibrant and successful communities,” says Cr Wood. Round one for Howick Local Board community grant applications open on July 13 and 14 for quick response grants, and on August 3 and September 11 for the local board grants programme. College claims a top prize HOWICK College is one of a dozen secondary schools sharing a $48,000, eco-friendly prize pool aimed at reducing waste. It is one of 12 winning high schools from Northland to Canterbury, that will receive a set of purpose-built, stainless steel recycling bins designed to hold beverage containers. The competition was created by Tauranga-based environmental education trust EERST. “We needed to do something about the frightening number of aluminium cans and glass and plastic bottles that are tossed in school waste bins every year,” says EERST chairman Marty Hoffart. “We deal with thousands of

Before long, these students are going to be out there in the community and we all need them to be smart about minimising waste
and reusing resources.” Mr Hoffart said bin contest winners had to prove they were already showing initiative to reduce waste, that they genuinely needed the bins and were committed to using them. “There were some very worthy entries. Several schools conducted surveys to find out how many cans and bottles their students threw away each week. HOSE who remember the days of big hair and shoulder pads with nostalgia will relish a musical trip back to the 1980s. Howick’s Harlequin Musical Theatre’s next production is The Wedding Singer, and its director Susanne Dell describes it as a “fun bubble gum� show. “It’s bright and colourful, reflecting the 80s with big hair and shoulder pads. Everything is fun with lots of laughter, dancing and singing.� Ms Dell has teamed up again with the artistic team which directed the company’s last sellout show, Disney’s Aladdin JR, musical director Lynnette Leggett and choreographer Sarah Krissanen. The Wedding Singer, based on the 1998 film of the same name, is centred on Robbie, played by Keith Marr who has moved up through the Harlequin family since first performing there when he was 18. Leading lady, Julia, who accompanies Robbie through a complicated journey to the altar, is played by Lili Latham who comes to the Howick stage with stints in the New Zealand Stars in Your Eyes and New Zealand’s Got Talent contests behind her. Angela Mason plays Linda, the other part of the romantic triumvirate. Ms Dell says the Harlequin casting team decided to make

Grease and last year’s Guys and Dolls, are tried and true choices, she says. AKURANGA Vet Clinic have an opinion about which Dancing with the Stars, contestant they would like you to vote for. Vote for Siobhan Marshall (Outrageous Fortune actress) and her partner Charlie Billington, their charity is SPAW. Several staff from the local Pakuranga Vet Clinic have recently returned from Niue Island where they participated in the sixth charity clinic for South Pacific Animal Welfare (SPAW). SPAW was founded six years ago by Howick’s Karen Schade. “SPAW has now sent six veterinary teams to Niue over the past few years and this care provided free of charge is valued at around $500,000,� says Karen. “The people of Niue and other Pacific Islands are very supportive of the charity but we still need support from you to help carry out this important work.
SPAW is a full voluntary charity, every person associated or that works on these islands does it for free. The charity visits our neighbouring Pacific Islands regularly as vet care is not usually available or very limited.� SPAW works collaboratively with the local people to foster positive change for animals and the communities and environments in which they live by developing and implementing animal welfare programmes. This includes general veterinary care, spay/neuter services/ animal husbandry, vet tech training and humane education programmes within island communities, some extremely remote. “The charity has improved the lives of thousands of animals and your vote means dollars for SPAW,� Karen says. “Siobhan Marshall is an avid animal lover and visited Tonga
on a SPAW clinic three years ago experiencing the local charities work first hand and this is the reason she chose SPAW to receive funds from votes during her time on dancing with the stars.� Says Siobhan: “When I was approached to do Dancing with the Stars, I instantly thought of SPAW as my charity having visited Tonga a couple of years ago on a SPAW clinic. “I saw first-hand the incredible work this Kiwi charity does for animals in the Pacific Islands. “Their job is important because without them the suffering of animals would be huge with vet care practically non-existent and I wanted to bring awareness to their cause. “A vote for Charlie and I, is a vote for animals.�

HE Howick Village Business Association celebrated the Best Business and Community Awards 2015 with a breakfast at Basalt last Tuesday. Over 70 people attended the ceremony to see the winners and runners-up accept their awards. The Howick Village Best Business and Community Awards have been running for three years, sponsored by local businesses. Categories included best retail, professional, and hospitality business as well as best use of technology and an overall supreme award. The six categories yielded 17 winners, runners-up and highly commended nominees. Winners in each category were awarded with trophies and cash prizes while runners-up received framed certificates. New entrant, Hair at the Ter-
races featured prominently, winning the award for best professional business as well as taking home the overall supreme award. Senior Stylist Bex Brown accepted the two awards on behalf of the salon. “I was really nervous and excited because we didn’t expect to win,� she said. “It was a huge shock to us.� The salon hopes to be nominated for the annual awards again next year. “It’s up to us not to drop our standards and keep up a high level of service,� Miss Brown said. Howick Village manager Jenny Foster said it was a great turn-out and everybody enjoyed the breakfast. “Everybody is saying it was the best awards we have had so far,� she said. Mrs Foster said the nominees were selected by the public before
winners were chosen by an independent team of judges led by Ron Larsen of MAC Star Ltd. “The judges had the terrible task of trying to select winners, every year they tell me it’s so difficult because the standard is so high,� she said. “We look forward to next year’s awards and receiving lots of nominations from the public. It’s all about the public because if they don’t nominate their favourite businesses they won’t be in the running,� Mrs Foster said. The title of best citizen/volunteer was a new category this year and was only made possible by the generosity and support of local business man John Roy, Mrs Foster said. Howick RSA welfare officer Paulette Trotter and Howick Coastguard president Ian Gibson came first and second respectively in the best citizen/volunteer category.

First class fields open at Macleans College

By Haley Thom NEW developments at Macleans College give pupils access to first-class sporting facilities. Macleans played host to members of the school board and local councillor and Olympian Dick Quax last week as it celebrated the opening of its dual-purpose artificial turf. A grass cricket oval was reconstructed using soil taken from the turf site to complete an over-all upgrade of the schools playing fields adjacent to Macleans Road. School principal Byron Bentley said the cricket pitch was an added bonus as resources were made available during the installation of the turf. The upgraded grass oval now featured an international-sized cricket pitch, he said. Mr Bentley said the new surfaces were a huge addition to Macleans sporting programme and would bring exciting opportunities for the school. “It gives us real options now, no more ground closures,� he said. The new playing fields were primarily for rugby, football and cricket but would be utilised for other sports and physical education classes. The contract was managed by Auckland Civil Limited who had recently completed an artificial turf at William Green Domain.

S IF the talk of using gecko robots to find things in collapsed buildings; or the possibility of becoming a superhero wasn’t exciting enough; the idea that ‘stuff’ could be rendered invisible to the human eye had the imaginations of a group of youngsters running at full tilt. The Farm Cove Intermediate Area Two and Four students were spellbound as ‘Nanogirl’, aka nanotechnologist, Dr Michelle Dickinson, talked about her work that involves manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular and supra-molecular – in other words absolutely tiny – scale. “One of the coolest things I get to do,� she said, is to make ‘invisibles’.� Scientists are already using ‘metamaterials’ in a cloak which can render an object seemingly invisible. “The technology, which changes the way the light bounces off things, is only about six months old,� she told the awe-struck kids, “and we are learning to make it bigger. “Imagine if instead of high rise buildings that block the view, we could see through them. “But it’s only for really tiny things,� she said. “You have to be careful what you make invisible because the trouble is you would bump into it.� But there was no stopping Farm Cove’s budding engineers and scientists who pondered about whether the robot gecko Nanogirl has invented could be made invisible so that it could spy on people, such as ISIS terrorists. Or whether the metamaterials could be developed into a liquid that could be sprayed on to make something invisible.
Dr Dickinson, however, drew the line at suggestions that the robots she was building could turn into ‘terminators’. “Where you can ask for control by programming, you get to control the robot,� she said. “So I never program things I’m not happy with. I want to develop robots that can find things, or pick up medicines for elderly patients without breaking anything. Dr Dickinson’s experimentation with robots was stimulated by the humble gecko when she discovered it could stick to walls and ceilings. “They have the coolest feet with nano hairs. I scanned a gecko, copied its feet and made a robot with nano hairs on its feet. “I wanted to help the world, for example where you can’t go into a building after an earthquake. But you could put cameras on the robot gecko which can climb and see if anyone is still inside. “I’m interested in robots because older people who live by themselves often need help. So I would like to invent medical robots which could give them medication. “The problem is that robots are usually really clumsy with clumsy hands. Gecko feet can stick to glassware and medicines so they can give a person a glass of water. I am working on doing that next. “A lot of my experiments are involved with micro gravity. I am interested in why bones break. “For example, astronauts’ bones become very weak when they come back from space because bones need gravity to be strong.� Dr Dickinson, a senior engineering lecturer at Auckland University, is one of the Sir Peter Blake Trust “Dream Team’, role models selected to show children what is

She advised them to make knowledge their most powerful weapon – “my brain is my best weapon�. “You must believe in your dreams, whether you want to be an architect, an engineer or an author,� she said. “And you must have good friends around you, not mean people or those who bully you. “They are not worth listening to and they are probably jealous because they are not cool like you. “Surround yourself with cool people.� She urged the youngsters to be open to opportunities, even if they were petrified. “If you are frightened of something and run away does that solve anything? Next time you will still be scared. “I was scared to stand up and talk to people so no-one knew about the cool thing I was doing or about my robot. “I realised the only thing to stop me being scared was to face my fear. “You are now helping me because you are being nice to me. “That’s the reason I go onto TV, because it is important to talk about science. Rather than be invisible, I decided to go out and talk. “Your superpower can be helping other people, being good at maths, science or art and sharing with people. “It will only come by having awesome friends around you, then you will feel super awesome and you will all be superheroes together.�

OUNG people gave military top brass plenty of food for thought at a meeting discussing the Defence White Paper. Twenty-five enthusiastic young community leaders, senior school students and members of the Air Cadets and Sea Cadets turned out in force to hear from high-ranking New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) officers and to contribute their ideas for the nation’s future defence strategy. The meeting was arranged by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and aimed at young community leaders and senior students interested in defence. It was held in conjunction with the current public consultation on the Defence White Paper, a document that will
shape the country’s defence plans and strategies over the next 25 years. “It made sense to organise a meeting where young people could talk about the future direction of New Zealand’s defence planning, because they are some of the people who it’s going to affect,� says Mr Ross. It was staged at The Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park, headquarters of No. 40 (Howick) Squadron, Air Training Corps, a unit led by NZ Cadet Forces (NZCF) Squadron Leader Tyron Guthrie. What should be the role of the NZDF? What does the NZDF require to be successful? And, what would attract young people to have a career in the NZDF? “It was a very worthwhile exercise, because through the public consultation process, young people haven’t had much prompting or encouragement to contribute their ideas and opinions,� he says. THE secondary school which was built on part of an old dairy farm known for its swampy soil in winter is set to wow the community and the students at large. While teaching practises at Pakuranga College have rapidly changed over the last couple of years, the 55-year-old college building has stood still, literally untouched. It’s been a silent witness to different generations of college students enter its portals and leave after a passage of time. To keep up with the fast pace of academic progress and modern education practises, Pakuranga College is going through a major spruce up. Apart from beautifying the frontage of the College to create an aesthetically appealing backdrop, there are other major changes on the cards. Principal Michael Williams says it is a tenyear property development plan. And whilst the College awaits the approval from the Ministry of Education, the landscaping and tidying up has begun. Around 1000 plants have been planted. “By the time the students return from their school holidays there will be new signage, car parks, a new and more inviting entrance for students, the astro field will be cleaned up and the boundaries of the college facing the Pakuranga Highway would have been beautified,� he says pointing out to all the work that is being done. “We have already started working on the new design brief. There will be new gates, and the ugly fences that surrounded the College boundary have been torn down. Lots more trees will be planted.� The plan is to create new vistas so that passersby get to see more green spaces instead of cars parked in the campus. Mr Williams who has been principal of the college for the last six years says the first three years were spent looking after the leaky buildings. Ironically the leaky buildings were the new buildings that were built years later to deal with the growing number of students. “The old existing structures were in good shape.� Work has also started on a cafe for the hospitality students. “Our hospitality students who’ve done the Barista course are already in the business of selling coffee. The cafe will help the senior students to get good experience working in a cafe,� he says. Modernisation plans are afloat for the Mathematics block as well. “There will be a lot break out spaces so that there is more flexibility. There’s quite a lot of work involved,� he says. “The College hasn’t done any developmental work for a long time, almost 20 years, and while we don’t see ourselves moving into a flash building, we are making small changes to the environment that will spruce up the college giving it a big facelift. And this is just the beginning.�

N EXHIBITION featuring rare treasures from northern New Zealand’s history has opened. Auckland Libraries’ Sir George Grey Special Collections latest exhibition includes New Zealand’s first printed book, historical letters, maps, diary entries and early land deeds. ‘Putahitanga: a meeting of two worlds in the North, 1769-1842 concentrates on the interaction between Maori and Pakeha during the early contact period in Northland, through to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, establishment of the capital in Auckland in 1840, and the arrival of the first migrant ships in 1842. Auckland Councillor Alf Filipaina who chairs the arts, culture and events committee says the exhibition offers Aucklanders and all library visitors an opportunity to see rare

treasures from Auckland Council Libraries special collections. “The history of Auckland and northern New Zealand really comes alive in this special exhibition,” he says. “There are letters, maps, journal entries, and other taonga that form an important part of our bicultural heritage and that tell a unique story about our country’s earliest written history. “Not many people realise that these treasures are available for free to all Aucklanders. Anyone can ask to view the items in special collections when they are not being exhibited. These are valuable resources that have been gifted to the people of Auckland.” The exhibition is open until October 18 at Sir George Grey Special Collections, Level 2, Central City Library, Lorne Street, Central Auckland.

The first step in a kitchen renovation by Kitchen Mania is a visit by one of their six very experienced consultants to your home – they will come to you anywhere in Auckland. Kitchens are much more than just a cooking area.� And if there is a sticky issue regarding the layout or functionality of the kitchen, the whole team of designers will put their heads together to offer the best solution. The company has a staff of 25, who work closely together as a team. Mt Wellington-based Kitchen Mania have been in business since 2009 and Carl has been involved in the industry now for about three decades. The Mt Wellington showroom is bright and well set-up with model kitchens and many dashes of their trademark colour of yellow. But, Carl believes strongly that if a kitchen is to be renovated successfully, his consultants must go to the customers’ own homes for a good understanding of what is required. “There they can get a feeling for the space and to know if it’s for a family or not, people who do lots of entertaining and also what works or doesn’t work in the current kitchen.Our consultants really listen to the customers and they
have years of experience in design. They know all about functionality and what works within the kitchen’s various zones.� As well as the showroom, the company has a manufacturing plant where the kitchen cabinetry is produced. “All our kitchens are made from MR (moisture resistant board),� Carl says. “This alone extends the life of your investment. All the cabinets have solid backs that enable easy fixing of electrical and plumbing fixtures. We use the best European hardware available and have stringent quality control on every kitchen that leaves our factory.� What’s more, because many people are “time poor� with busy schedules, Kitchen Mania offers to take away all the angst of organising a complete kitchen renovation by offering a special package to project manage the entire process. This means installation, electrical work, and plumbing fixtures can all be taken care of. This means clients don’t have to worry about ringing around for several quotes and working out a good time frame for all the tradesmen. Kitchen Mania will take care of it all from the floor up! After the consultant’s visit, customers are invited back to the Mt Wellington showroom to discuss the plan, which will have been formulated using the latest in computer software and tailored to keep within the budget. Many customers go for the complete package, while others might opt only for new cabinetry. But, usually within two months of that first consultation customers can be enjoying their newly renovated kitchen. Customers now are very well educated on what is available for the kitchen, Carl says. They have usually done their homework and are more
at ease with spending on what they really want. “This trend has developed over the last three years or so and we see people are now prepared to pay for higher quality,� he says. “For example, if they want a stone benchtop, they will not settle for the laminated option or they will opt for the more expensive glossy-finished doors they really want. The Good Doctor Lance O’Sullivan This is a brilliant biography of a very good doctor indeed. Dr Lance O’Sullivan has won multiple awards but you may remember him from being named the New Zealander of the Year last year, for his services to Maori health. His story is a fascinating one. Student talents secure top awards By Marianne Kelly

WO south-east secondary colleges have taken out top awards in a stage event which provides an outlet for youth to creatively express themselves and their values. Macleans and Pakuranga colleges were placed first and third respectively in the RAW Division of the Auckland 2015 Stage Challenge, a dance, drama and design spectacular involving 200 schools throughout the country. The RAW division concentrates on the raw elements of performance, including choreography and dance. Macleans College performance Neglect was based on the premise that domestic unjust in society is an issue many turn a blind eye to. The performance synopsis says: “Sadly, neglect is a reality to all, from every walk of life and background. Although it may not necessarily happen in our own line of vision, behind closed doors and outside of the picture frame the truth has the potential to unravel into something much more.� Vicki Norman, the group’s school dance teacher says the audience was in stillness as they focused on the intense emotion portrayed by the dancers telling the story of neglect and abuse. “It was a powerful performance showcasing the many talented students at the school,� she says.
“The choreographers worked hard to create something that was unique and quite outstanding.� Students, she says, gain many valuable experiences from participating in the event. “There are many extra hours that are put in by staff and students. All of the hard work resulted in a satisfying and well-deserved win.� Macleans choreographers were Dean Elliot, Olivia Martin, Rochelle Fisher, Madi Page, Chelsey Gribble, Paige Cordingley, Kayla Steele and Stephanie Yiu. The group involved 60 performers, nine make-up artists and three lighting crew. Pakuranga College’s performance was about two groups possessing a thirst for power when a young man spots a beautiful woman. Problematically they do not come from the same social class. Resisting these societal expectations in order to fulfil their love for each other, the journey involves witnessing true love which overcomes the barriers set before them by society. Valerie Chong, Devan Biddick, Ruby Clavey and Georgia Wansink led a group of 66. The teacher who led the group, Kylie Kilmartin says the event was more than about dancing. “It was about leadership, about taking everyday students and encouraging them to go outside of their comfort zones to participate this year,�
she says. “Our leaders were responsible for the initial performance theme ideas, all of the choreography, music choice and the administration of Stage Challenge. It is absolutely fantastic to see all the cast enjoying the success of their hard work.� Stage Challenge has been organised by the Stage Challenge Foundation Charity Commission for the past 22 years. It uses a health promotion concept, encouraging students to be their best without drugs, alcohol or tobacco. Feedback What about carless days? THE Auditor General tells Auckland councillors that they would be breaking the law if they did not pass the budget giving Aucklanders an estimated 10 per cent rate increase? I thought we lived in a democracy, what was the point of voting on the budget at all? What would they do if the vote was not passed - put all the councillors in jail, what a farce? Our councillors get paid over $100,000 annually to do what they are told! If it wasn’t ridiculous it would almost be laughable. If they get away with it once, they will keep on getting away with it. Let’s face it, all the money in the world will not ďŹ x our trafďŹ c problems. Additional cars are going on the roads in Auckland at the rate of 10,000 a year. We need to remove 10,000 cars a year and we might get somewhere. Carless days might work, or limit the amount of car imports each year. Yes, maybe a bit far out but pouring money into public transport is costing billions of dollars and achieving almost nothing, except putting up our rates bill. Bob Wichman, Botany
What’s your car’s safety rating? MAYBE we should be applying maths and statistics next time we look at upgrading or buying a vehicle. The car sales person will tell how safe the vehicle is and how many ANCAP stars it has but what they will not tell you is the how many people have been injured in that model. If you talk to ACC, you will ďŹ nd out that how safe a vehicle is makes no difference when they work out the ACC levy. They look at the crash data from Australia and NZ to work that out. So my 2011 Kia Sportage with one of the best safety ratings is put in the lowest rating 1 on their 1 to 4 scale. So what is the best advice? Buy a vehicle with a good safety rating or one that you are less likely to be injured in. Barry Wood, Howick

Kids are even turning up at middle class schools without having breakfast, it is no longer a low decile problem, and here is the Government wasting $27 million on a referendum for a new ag. We’ve heard the flag poem before RE Feedback, Times July 2, in 1994 my wife and I undertook a cruise to the Solomon Islands that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Battle for Guadalcanal campaign in WW2. Attached for your information is the poem referred to in your paper and as originally presented on board at the time. If I recall correctly, this was read by the Australian author but, unfortunately, I do not have his name. It appears from your comments that a ďŹ nal (perhaps superuous!) verse may have been added some time later i.e. August 2001. My wife has carried out some further investigation. On reection, we now feel the poem was read on board another cruise we undertook in August 2001 to New Caledonia. This would seem to coincide with your research on the internet regarding dates. Green light for trade THE go-ahead for the Trade Promotion Authority in the United States paves the way for progressing negotiations towards the muchtalked about Trans-PaciďŹ c Partnership Agreement (TPPA). There is some opposition to Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and the TPPA, but it is critical for New Zealand to continue playing its part in the world. We need to be in business by trading our top quality goods and services with friends and neighbours in the Asia PaciďŹ c region. The success of FTAs can be clearly seen in our quickly expanding relationship with China. Since 2008, New Zealand’s exports to China have increased from $2 billion to $11b as a result of the NZChina FTA. For the ďŹ rst time last year, twoway trade was worth more than

$20b annually. The goal is to grow that to $30b by 2020. The potential beneďŹ ts of TPPA for New Zealand are considerable. Countries involved in negotiations account for 45 per cent of our total trade and ďŹ ve of our top 10 trading partners are included. Reducing tariffs and barriers to trade with these nations will reduce costs and increase the value of our exports. The inclusion of the United States is also important. With 300 million consumers from the world’s largest economy, an FTA with the US has long been our top trade policy goal. TPPA would achieve this. Much of the negativity around TPPA ďŹ xates on the potential for Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) clauses in FTAs. ISDS is not new.

THANKS for the article (Times, June 11). I have had a lot of feedback and there is still so much to say. Your paper has become a lot more interesting across the board with good local human stories. Method:
Put all the ingredients except the silverbeet and yoghurt into the slow cooker with 1½ litres of water or a pot on the stove and cook on low for 3 hours or use the best setting on your slow cooker. Add more water if you need to so that the hock is just covered. Remove the stalks from the silverbeet. Add the sliced stalks to the soup. Halve the leaves and ďŹ nely slice. Put to one side. When the soup is ready and the hock is well cooked, remove it from the soup. Blend the soup and put it back into the pot. Season. Add the silverbeet and bring the soup back to a simmer then stir to make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom. Meanwhile remove the

meat from the hock and shred roughly. Serve the soup with a dollop of yoghurt and the meat from the hock on top. Finish with a grind of pepper.

Urgent help needed with heating costs A
CALL for rental houses to have a warrant of fitness (WOF) in the wake of a child’s death continues to be opposed by the NZ Property Investors’ Federation (NZPIF). Andrew King, NZPIF executive officer says the federation’s members, like other people, would like to make sure that children, such as Emma-Lita, who died in August last year, do not suffer as a result of their living conditions. “It is an extremely sad case and Coroner Brandt Shortland has said that the Housing New Zealand house in Otara could not be ruled out as a contributing factor in her illness and subsequent death,” he says. The Coroner’s comments have led to a call for all rental houses to have a WOF. But Mr King says a WOF would not have helped EmmaLita, although it is understandable that people want to see something done. Housing New Zealand has insulated all its properties where practicable and has confirmed that ventilation was installed in every room of Emma’s house and a heater was provided. The Coroner acknowledged that Housing New Zealand attempted to help the family with a heater. But high electricity costs made it impossible for it to be used within the family budget. Mr King says even insulated houses need heating and ventilation, otherwise they are likely to remain cold and damp. “The NZPIF believes that the families of children with health issues potentially caused by living in a cold damp house should be provided with electricity vouchers during the winter months to assist them heating their homes,” he says. “We are disappointed that the Government isn’t currently in favour of providing electricity vouchers for low income families. This isn’t something that would affect rental property
owners. However we do see some families who need extra help. Perhaps, if it was carefully targeted to families of children with a recognised illness then the Government would look at it more favourably,” Mr King says. “The Government,” he says, “should focus on insulation and heating rather than responding to calls for a WOF, which checks items such as the size of kitchen benches and whether the property has a toilet and hot and cold water. “The Government saves $5 in health spending for every $1 spent on insulation and heating, so this is an excellent return for taxpayers’ money,” Mr King says. “Making insulation and energy efficient heating tax deductible would lead to warmer rentals without leading to significantly higher rental prices. “Any action which causes higher rent would make it even harder for families to pay for heating costs.”
Currently if existing insulation in the rental property is topped up, it is counted as a repair and is tax deductible, Mr King says. “If it is going to be a requirement for rental properties to be insulated, then the cost of the insulation is necessary to continue renting these out and that cost should be tax deductible.” The federation, Mr King says, has already acted to ensure that smoke alarms are readily available for members to install in their rentals. There is a special purchasing scheme for the alarms on the NZPIF website, coupled with a vigorous awareness campaign of the need for smoke alarms. The Maori Party says the preventable death of two-year-old Emma-Lita Bourne is a travesty and should be a sharp wake-up call for the Government. Co-leader Marama Fox says the Maori Party has continued to advocate for healthy homes since 2011. Its advocacy has led to the insulation of 48,000 state
houses and a WOF trial on 500 HNZ homes last year. The trial looked at issues such as dampness, safety, security and essential amenities like power points and toilets. “The results of the HNZ warrant of fitness trial which we initiated last year still haven’t been published,” she says. “We also expected to see a proposal for a house WOF in this year’s Budget but nothing has surfaced to date. “We’ve heard lots of excuses for why homes can’t be made healthy and safer, but no suggested solutions.” Earlier this year co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell called out private landlords in Christchurch for the appalling houses they were renting out to tenants. “It is clear that we have two key issues on a housing warrant of fitness. One is the setting of minimum standards for landlords, including the State, and the other is the enforcement of those standards,” Mr Flavell says.

Cutting winter energy budget A bucket test can help families cut hot water use

HE FIRST winter bill can come as a shock, but there are ways to avoid running up big amounts, according to EECA ENERGYWISE. Technical adviser Christian Hoerning says it’s important not to scrimp on heating because living in a cold, damp house can cause respiratory and other illnesses. However, he says many households can save on their hot water bills without compromising comfort. He suggests running a bucket test to find out how to cut hot water use. “Turn the shower on to a comfortable temperature,� he says. “If the shower fills a 10 litre bucket in less than a minute, it’s wasting water, energy and money. If the shower fills the bucket in only 40 seconds, a family of four could save about $500 a year on its electricity bills.� A shower head can be replaced for one with a more efficient flow rate of nine litres a minute or less. Or an inexpensive shower flow restrictor can be installed to an existing shower (nine litres a minute or less), Mr Hoerning says. “An efficient shower head gives you a great shower,� he says. “We are not suggesting you shower in a trickle of water.�

Facing tough conditions, local riders produced strong performances in the team time trial and individual events. Brother and sister James and Kate Fouche were in ďŹ ne form. Kate won gold in the team time trial and bronze in both the road race and criterium. James - away this week in Australia to race this weekend - was fourth in the team time trial, third in the road race and second in the criterium. Dylan McCullough was second in the junior boys’ time trial, third in the road race and second in the criterium. The St Kents team time trial saw the Year 7 and 8 girls place third. The senior girls under 20s were ďŹ rst and junior boys under 16s second. They are coached by ex-NZ cyclist Myron Simpson.
Jemma off to worlds HOWICK College pupil Jemma Manchester has been conďŹ rmed in the New Zealand team for the mountain bike world championships. Jemma will compete in the under19 women’s cross-country, along with Dunedin’s Shannon Hope. New Zealand is sending a 30-strong team to the event in Andorra, headed by Commonwealth Games medallists Anton Cooper and Sam Gaze. Keven Mealamu, on the other hand, was given an ignominious send-off by his Blues team on Friday night. ODAY we are lucky to have access to a plethora of information on nutrition and, in particular, natural foods. If you are feeling fatigued you can’t go past a super energy juice of carrot, beetroot, turnip, spinach leaves, garlic, apple and stir in some wheat grass. If you have a ‘NutriBullet’ all the better as you will benefit from the fibre too. Getting to know the health benefits of natural foods can keep away a multitude of modern day illnesses and keep us healthier for longer.
HERE is light at the end of the tunnel for footballer Steph Trowill. The 19-year-old was struck down with a baffling foot injury 16 months ago, which has ruled her out of two seasons playing the sport she loves. Now, after seeing a dozen doctors, specialists, and physiotherapists, who have prescribed nine different scans, the talented striker finally has a firm diagnosis of what has been plaguing her. During a nuclear medicine scan, in which radiation is injected to show abnormalities in bone structure, a minute fracture in her foot was revealed. “It’s a relief,� says Steph. “I’m very happy. I can’t wait to play again.� Her last competitive match was for Auckland in the national women’s league in 2013. The injury reared its ugly head after a preseason game last year. “I had pain when I run,� she says. “When I don’t run, it’s fine.� With every practitioner that she went to see, there was a glimmer of hope that the problem would be identified and she’d be back on the field soon after. Previous incorrect diagnoses ranged from tendon damage to jogger’s heel, and obscure conditions such as cuboid syndrome. The procedures included MRIs, x-rays, ultrasounds, physiotherapy, massage and

acupuncture. None of them eased the pain though, and she was left to watch from the sidelines. The lowest point of her afflic-
tion came after she was given a cortisone injection. “That is supposed to take away the pain for six weeks but it didn’t help,� she says. “I
thought, ‘if that doesn’t help, nothing is going to’.� As well as missing putting boot to ball, Trowill yearned to be back amongst her teammates at Western Springs. “That’s what I’ve missed most, being in a team. “I’ve been learning a lot watching more experienced players in my position, like Rebecca Tegg. “I’ve treated it as a learning experience.� After spending so much time and energy on her recovery, the decision was made earlier this year that playing football again wouldn’t be the main focus. It has paid off in other areas, with her studies in sport and recreation management at AUT benefitting. “You can see that with my uni results. My last six assignments have all got As, which is not normal for me.� The recovery process from now on involves being in a moon boot for three to six weeks, followed by a walking/jogging programme. “If I can’t do that, I’ll have to be in the moonboot for longer. “My goal is to play summer soccer in the Auckland sevena-side competition. That’s what I’m aiming for.� In between, she is staying involved in the beautiful game off the field. “Next semester I have to do two work placements so I’m doing one with Auckland Football and I’m in the process of organising one with women’s football.�
Sissons in New Zealand team HOWICK’S Ryan Sissons has been named in the Triathlon New Zealand team for the ITU World Mixed Relay Championships in Hamburg. Led by world number three Andrea Hewitt, the team is made up of Sophie Corbidge, Tony Dodds and Sissons. Underdogs came, saw, conquered The Highlanders really wanted the Super Rugby title
T
HE agony and the ecstasy of sport was magnified in all its transparency when the underdog Highlanders entered the Hurricanes Cake Tin den and slayed them 21-14 in last Saturday night’s epic Super Rugby final. In the end there was sympathy from All Black Hurricanes stalwarts Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu. Jeremy Thrush and Ben Franks playing their last game for their franchise. But only the meanest minded bigot would deny the better team won under the leadership of Ben Smith and Nasi Manu. Just how much the Highlanders wanted it was epitomised by the determination showed by Elliott Dixon in plunging across for his amazing try with several desperate defenders clinging to him in vain. Dixon personifies the character of a team that doesn’t have one All Black forward but refuses to take a backward step, as the Chiefs and Waratahs had learned to their cost during the Highlanders enthralling surge to the final. It’s been an amazing ride for coach Jamie Joseph since his team finished a dismal second last in the 2013 championship before he co-opted backs coach Tony Brown and began rebuilding his team with the likes of Blues rejects Malakai Fekitoa and Wai-
Agnew’s Angle sake Naholo who have gone on to become All Blacks. So, too, has talented first five Lima Sopoaga in joining that pair and the classy Aaron and Ben Smith. It is a team that embraces the old union call of “united we stand, divided we fall” with each man calling on courage to be his friend. Not that the Hurricanes lacked it upon taking the field with no fewer than 12 All Blacks as just reward for a season in which they led the field a merry chase before falling to the Highlander sword at the death knell. However they were not as smart or quite as hungry despite enjoying home town advantage with Aaron Smith and Sopoaga better generals than PJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett on the night. Yet it could have been so different had Barrett succeeded with his first three penalty attempts and had not the dangerous Julian Savea not dropped a pass when a try was begging.
Both are wonderfully gifted players who have contributed so much success to their franchise and country. But sport provides cruel twists as well as heroic moments and sometimes the margin between success and failure is minute. Still, as stated earlier, the Highlanders were worthy of their success, having adorned the champion’s mantle by rising to overcome a gallant foe in a battle fought at a frenetic, exhilarating pace. Hopefully their rise to stardom from the ignominy of 2011 will offer hope to new Blues coach Tana Umaga and his team for next year when a homesick Rene Ranger returns from abroad to help their cause. It won’t happen overnight but Umaga does have mana, is humble and led Counties to their first Ranfurly Shield success. However, like Joseph, he will know that success is not built on the fancy dancers of the backline, but big hearts and the nuts and bolts of the forwards engine room. While the Hurricanes will have lost four key All Blacks they will still have eight to resume the battle as they seek to avenge this year’s final loss to a team that will strive mightily to defend their crown.

Sports bites Zac off to baseball fair HOWICK Pakuranga Baseball Club’s Zac Dignan is one of five young Kiwi baseballers who will be winging their way to attend the World Children’s Baseball Fair (WCBF) in Chiba, Japan, in August. The prestigious fair was founded in 1989 by home run kings Sadaharu Oh and Hank Aaron, along with Dr Akiko Agishi. The mission of the organization is “to share the dream of friendship and teamwork with the children of the world and to sow the seeds of that dream through an international baseball fair�. The group which includes players from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, will be chaperoned by North Shore City Baseball Club’s Kevin Blackman. “The opportunity to represent New Zealand Baseball as a chaperone and attend this global event in Japan is an amazing opportunity. Having spoken to previous chaperones who had attended over the years it is an event that was highly recommended and something I wanted to be part of. “The Japanese are an amazing people and the opportunity to visit their country is a huge privilege and obviously the chance to immerse myself in baseball and learn some new skills from some hugely experienced coaches is a great opportunity as well.� This year’s event will include players from 15 nations from across the world participating in baseball clinics, cultural events and tourist trips.

Inkster makes her mark despite rocky start

P-and-coming equestrian Laura Inkster has battled back on her final day of the FEI World Jumping Challenge in Bulgaria for a fifth placing. The Clevedon rider began the competition last week on an unreliable mount called Alpha which was officially vetted out after a poor showing in the first round. Inkster drew a new horse – 7-year-old Kiara – which proved particularly useful. In the second round – speed - Inkster was clear and came in eighth. Inkster’s co-coach Carissa McCall said the 17-year-old was able to see the horses be worked the day before competition began and get some idea of what the horses could do. “There were a couple of horses they were hoping they wouldn’t draw,� McCall said. “Laura drew the horse Alpha which had stopped a few times and crashed a fence on the day before with the previous rider.� Due to swapping horses, Inkster was ineligible to qualify for the A Final but finished a creditable fifth in the Farewell Final on the final day on Sunday. Out of 46 countries, only 14 qualified. There were 746 competitors and only 20 – including Inkster – qualified.
