IGNS of people making temporary camps to doss down in a local premier park are evident. But there are no ofﬁcial plans to move them on. The Times discovered a small pile of personal belongings and bedding in Lloyd Elsmore Park undergrowth behind The Depot building next to the netball courts. But it was hard to tell whether the occupants had gone, were permanent, or transient. We asked the owner of the park, Auckland Council, whether it had issued any trespass notices for the area in recent times.

A spokesperson replied: “We are aware of a group who have been staying there. “But Auckland Council has not issued any trespass orders, nor have we told them to move on.” The Cession Community Church operates at The Depot and its pastor, Brett Jones, says he is generally aware of the homeless situation in the park. But the people tend to disappear during the winter to other options. “I would say that, in my observation, it’s individuals rather than a large group and they come and go a bit. “There are places all along the creek where people stay, including behind The Depot.”

ELL-KNOWN semi-retired Howick pharmacist John Savory is embarking on a balancing act that he hopes will result in retaining the spirit and culture of the Rotary Club of Howick, but regenerating it with the involvement of younger people. Its new president says Rotary is based on community service, fellowship and business networking. “Howick Rotary is an older club and we struggle to get young people to join because the social structure has changed,” he says. “For the 30 or 40-somethings who still have family responsibilities at home, many can’t come to a Rotary meeting four times a month because it’s likely to be their turn to go home and cook dinner as their partner is working also.” But, he says, he has found a group of young business people who would benefit from the Rotary experience. “We want to attract younger business people but we need a different structure because of their inability to attend Tuesday night meetings.” He’s got an idea for a morning club meeting every second week, before work for a cup of coffee and a muffin, in which members would be full-blown Rotarians but operating as a subgroup. “They would have representation on Howick Rotary’s board and some of our members could attend their meetings and they ours if they can,” he says. Young people do care about community service, Mr Savory says. “Look at the Student Volunteer Army formed after the Christchurch earthquake. That was done with the use of Facebook and that’s the sort of thing we need to look at.” For example, he says, as the members get older there’s increasing need for some strong muscles to lift boxes of books for Howick Rotary’s longstanding and successful annual Bookarama; also to help with other community projects. “We need to modify our structure to take into account the change in social commitments,” he says.

“I am very proud of the contribution the club has made to the community over the past 50 years and I’m grateful to my predecessors for their efforts. “My plans are to ensure that we are able to continue that service and any changes I am suggesting are my way of trying to ensure that in a changing world. “We have to do all of that within the context of the current club structure and be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.” Mr Savory has already introduced a couple of new initiatives to the monthly meetings. He’s asking members to present thumbnails of themselves. “A lot have changed their personal circumstances,” he says. “So they have five minutes to tell current member where they have been and where they are at, things we otherwise would never know about. It changes the way we look at people.” He has also asked the social committee to come up with ideas for ‘fun nights’ which would be held once a month. “It would be something for partners and friends to come along to, for example, wine tasting, trivia nights, or an Indian culture night. I’d like to see it made into a fun night.” He’s also identified 24 com-

munity projects that could be tackled, “as simple as the current one managing the Red Nose stall in Howick’s main street to something as complicated as Bookarama which has raised more than $25,000 each year.” In total the club raises more than $40,000 a year to be spent in the community. Other projects include school scholarships, contributing to the Trees for Survival programme in schools, help with plantings at Mangemangeroa Reserve in Somerville Road and it recently adopted a building at the Howick Historical Village taking responsibility for its mainte-

Police rule out child abduction attempt By Nick Krause NEAR hysteria has gripped parents at some local schools after reports of an attempted child abduction. However police are trying to stem the rising panic saying they believe there was nothing sinister about the incident. Police told the Times that last

Wednesday at around 4pm near Elm Park School a seven-year-old boy got into a vehicle which had pulled over. The boy got in the car with a male driver – for whom there is no description. “He’s driven him for a short distance and then pulled over and let him out,” police said. “At this stage it doesn’t appear

anything sinister has happened.” The vehicle is described as a people mover-type wagon. There is no description of the colour. Police said they were still investigating and following up with the school however “it doesn’t look like anything sinister has happened”. It was a timely reminder to

parents to speak with their children about getting into strange cars. Police would also like the driver of the people mover to come forward. Meanwhile, social media posts indicate parents of at least two Howick schools received emails or notices from principals at Cockle

Bay Primary and Mellons Bay Primary advising of “an attempted abduction”. Parents are warning others to be vigilant. A representative for Cockle Bay School principal Graeme Lomas says he did not want to comment and was only passing on information from the Howick Pakuranga Principals’ Association.

N THESE days of keyboarddominated communications, traditional skills of hand-writing documents are rapidly dropping by the wayside, leaving a peculiar modern-day conundrum – writing your own signature. It’s a trend that hasn’t bypassed a group of Pakuranga College entrepreneurs. They’ve formed a Young Enterprise Scheme company called A Brilliant Signature which they will submit to the Young Enterprise regional finals in September and also for their NCEA qualification at the end of the year. The group includes chief executive Kobe Huang, finance director Honghao Wu, marketing director Mary Liu, and communications director Jiemin Peng. They are targeting young adults with their product which involves a website through which they help clients with signature ideas. An eventual choice of three is supplied along with a slow motion video and trace paper to practise the style they eventually choose. Kobe is an international student and, when his Dad returned to China, he realised in the process of setting up a bank account and a learner licence that he had to write his signature, but he didn’t have one. “I shared this with the team and we found that we all struggled to write signatures. So we thought ‘why not turn it into a business idea?’” “I hunted for a service in New

Some were machine generated which I tried and found them worse than what I write.” The aim is to design a personalised signature that represents who the person is. A business person might need something formal compared with a singer or sports person who is looking for something more stylish. Kobe’s father came to the group’s aid again when he put them in touch with a graphic design company in China that had signature design experience. The system involves a customer sending a request to the A Brilliant Signature website, describing

what style of signature they want. They can choose from 22 different styles, outlining any personal spin they want added. The company’s supplier in China provides three styles for the customer to choose from. The payment is completed and A Brilliant Signature forwards the slow motion video and trace paper to the customer. Jiemin says young adults in general need to be able to sign “essential” documents, even while they are still at university, such as CVs or grade papers. “When we did our market research we found a lot of people said they didn’t have a proper sig-

nature, only initials and that was not how they wanted it to be.” Mary says 72.5 per cent of the people surveyed were not satisfied with their current signature. “We did door-to-door interviews in Highland Park and faceto-face at school. We also did an online survey, including a draw to win a pizza.” The group, which recently presented their business idea in the Young Enterprise Scheme Dragon’s Den regional finals, started business in earnest three weeks ago and have so far sold 12 signatures. The company will promote its product at a Young Enterprise company trade fair at the Greenlane Alexandra Park Raceway on August 8. While they didn’t win a prize in the Dragon’s Den event, Kobe says business is sometimes “more than a competition”. There’s no profit yet, says Honghao. And the group wants to donate a portion of its profit towards Orphans Aid International. “We’ve spent money on the website and we need 62 signatures to break even,” he says. However, the team members are grateful to their backer, Bruce Waller, manager of Highland Park Shopping Centre who has sponsored the company’s start-up and is mentoring the group. Whitford accidents A YOUNG driver lost control of his vehicle and landed in a ditch in Whitford on Monday morning in wet conditions. The Flat Bush man says he was travelling at 60km/h when the blue BMW sedan he was driving lost traction and ended up tail-first in the hillside on Whitford Road. Police were called to the incident. No one was injured and the car was towed away at midday. Last Friday, a woman was taken to hospital after a minor car accident on a bridge in Whitford Road. Police say the vehicle went down the embankment in Whitford at around 12.30pm. The driver, who was not carrying any passengers, reported no injuries when police spoke to her and no other vehicles were involved.

Police seek information COUNTIES Manukau Police are continuing to investigate a fatal motorbike crash in Clevedon and are asking any members of the public who may have information to come forward. A motorcyclist was travelling north along North Road, around 5km outside Clevedon township at around 2pm on Sunday, July 19 when the rider failed to negotiate a corner and crashed. A source says he had just bought the bike. The 42-year-old rider died at the scene. The rider was wearing a red crash helmet, fluorescent yellow jacket and the bike was silver with a rack on the back. Sport stacking champion off to Germany By Farida Master SARINA Wang has been named by the World Sports Stackers Association, NZ as one of the representatives of the NZ Black Stacks team at the World Sport Stacking Championship 2016 in Germany. It was two years ago that the now 11-year-old first saw a clip of speed stacking on YouTube. Said to be the fastest growing

sport, speed stacking involves swiftly stacking and de-stacking special cups in different sequences, patterns and combinations. It takes hours of repetitive stacking to reach to a point where one can accomplish the feat within the blink of an eye! Fascinated by the cool sport on YouTube, Sarina asked her mother to order the special stacking cups, along with a mat and a stopwatch. After practising hard, the

St Kentigern College student Googled the local speed stacking tournaments and registered online. All her mother had to do was drive her to the different locations the tournaments were held in New Zealand. Last year, Sarina who also plays soccer, studies ballet and jazz, and is adept at playing the piano and the guitar, represented New Zealand at the World Sports Stackers Championship in Korea.

Ask her if she was nervous participating at an international level and she says: “The fastest speed stackers are in the US and since they didn’t participate, it wasn’t that tough.” The little girl from Bucklands Beach set a world record in her age group. “The previous world record was two seconds. I broke it with 1.9 seconds. When another competitor broke my record later, I set a new

one at 1.7 seconds at the national tournament,” she says. Sarina holds another world record for cycle stack. She practices 30 minutes on week days and for two hours at weekends. The motivated 11-year-old says that speed stacking helps hand-eye co-ordination. “You use both your hands and both sides of your brain for this sport.” Little wonder she finds the Rubik’s cube equally stimulating as she trains for the premier stacking event in Germany on April 1-2. And yes, this time the Americans will be there!

The writing is on the wall I

T’S not very often that the principal of a college encourages students to write on the walls or on the school tables. But now with Pakuranga College going through a series of changes to create a modern learning environment, the writing is on the wall. Principal Michael Williams of Pakuranga College introduced the students this week to a brand new facility designed to encourage mathematics students to learn collaboratively. The college has transformed a previously under-used part of its mathematics building into a dynamic new learning space in which students will be able to engage in differentiated learning. The exciting ‘break-out’ area in the Seager Building features walls and tables which function as giant whiteboards so that students can make notes and calculations as they work together. “We have converted the boring old corridors into exciting spaces which gives the students

more creative freedom and are interactive. “By breaking down the walls and replacing them with glass it also allows the teachers to keep an eye on them,” says Mr Williams.

Get her to Ghana By NATALIE BRITTAN INSTEAD of partying while at university, Emily Read scraped all her pennies together to put her skills to good use in developing countries. The 23-year-old Howickian who graduated with a criminology and sociology degree from the University of Auckland last year says her tertiary studies gave her focus. “I was always passionate about people before the degree but it just kind of reined in what direction I wanted to go in,” she told the Times. Learning about human rights, abuse in developing countries and the statistics were motivating factors for the former Elim Christian College student. “There are around 30 million children in slavery around the world. That really affected me, so that’s why I decided to head over to Nepal.” Using money she had saved up over the years, Ms Read went on a volunteer trip to Nepal,

stopping first in Cambodia and Vietnam to work with Hagar, an organisation helping victims of sex trafficking. Then in Nepal she volunteered with the Umbrella Foundation working with children separated from their family and placed in corrupt institutions. She says it was a life-changing and an incredible experience. “I could put faces to the stories and experience what it was like for the children.” She returned to New Zealand before the April earthquake that shook the country and says the news was heartbreaking. “After seeing the land and seeing the country you know the devastation and chaos it would cause,” she says. “All of our children were safe and fine but had to live outside under a tarpaulin. I do know one of the children I stayed with was crushed by a house.” Now, Ms Read has been accepted for a year-long internship in Ghana with International Justice Mission, a charity rescuing victims of child

slavery. She has put all her savings towards her September trip and booked flights, but needs just another $3500 to put towards living costs in the African country. Putting her criminology knowledge to practice, Ms Read will be working with the investigations team to develop practices and procedures and work alongside local law enforcement services. While her experience in Asia has prepared her somewhat, she says there are other things to consider. “You’re going into a dark underworld with poverty and violence so there’s always the safety factor.” However, Ms Read is undeterred. “Learning from the children you really do feel they teach you more than you impact them. “Their attitudes are contagious. They’re so joyful despite what they’ve been through. “It really teaches you that you’re not determined by your situation or by what’s happened to you in the past. There is something to look forward to.”

IN THE first week in August Howick ratepayers will receive their rate demands from the Auckland Council. Howick councillors, Quax and Stewart fought hard to keep the rates increase at an average of 2.5 per cent in line with the mayor’s election promise. At the 11th hour, and without consultation, the majority of councillors voted to impose a $114 targeted transport rate. Councillor Dick Quax moved a motion supported by Councillor Sharon Stewart that any additional transport funding should be found from within the council’s $3 billion operating budget. This was defeated and the targeted transport rate effectively raised the average 2015/16 rate increase in the Howick Ward by 9.9 per cent. For many ratepayers on fixed incomes and those on low incomes this will be a significant financial burden and therefore it is important that those who may be eligible for the government’s rates rebate scheme which is administered by the council, to apply. The government has raised the amount of the rebate to $610 with an income threshold of $24,440 per year. However, under certain circumstances some ratepayers may still be eligible even if their income is higher. \ The amount of the rebate will depend on a number of factors including the amount of rates charged, the number of dependents, gross income and any overseas income for the year ended March 31, 2015. Students cook up big food fest By NATALIE BRITTAN

HEY say too many cooks spoil the broth but for Howick College, the opposite proved true with its international food festival an outstanding recipe for success last Friday. Organised by a committee of seven Year 13 students from Ingham House, the fundraiser collected $2300 for Cure Kids and the Blind Foundation and featured 23 stalls from all over the world, including Scotland, Germany, South America, Fiji and many more. Competition was stiff but sweet with three South African stalls offering different versions of milk tart (a chilled, custard-like pie), and others serving up sugar-laden goodies such as pumpkin pie, cupcakes and

tiramisu. Alongside cake pops, one notable outfit specialising in desserts had ricicles on the menu. Like a popsicle but made from rice puffs, the pastel pink sensation showed innovation from the girls fronting the stall who says they “maybe, kind of” came up with the concept. A Mexican effort from six entrepreneurial Year 10 and Year 11 boys with Taiwanese, Malaysian, Fijian Indian and Kiwi heritage were a hit with their fare sold out sooner than most. The stall’s coordinator, 15-year-old Amol Kumar, says choosing the popular cuisine was a no-brainer. “Why not [Mexican]? We see it at all the food festivals and it’s a great idea to represent all cultures from all over the world.”

Funds to set up the stall came out of students’ own pockets and the ‘Mexican’ boys even baked brownies to fundraise to buy ingredients. Showing his support for his younger brother behind the Mexican initiative, final year student and 17-year-old Carlos Kershaw tucked into a quesadilla and his partner, Lillie Botica, 17, snaffled an amazing trifle. “It’s a really cool atmosphere,” says Carlos. “More and more people come each year and it’s our last chance to sample amazing fare.” A few stalls away the South American flavour continued with exchange students from Brazil and Chile setting up shop. Sixteen-year-old Maria Hidalgo from Chile says it was a privilege to experience the unique event.

“In Chile we don’t have these foods. It’s very exciting for us.” The auditorium was packed with visiting students from One Tree Hill College as well as teachers, staff and students from Howick College all hungry for a bite of the international pie. Ingham House dean Neera Sundrum says the atmosphere was electrifying as Tongan student, Meleane Tu’iono, garbed in native dress and oiled skin, took to stage to showcase her cultural dance which was followed by a performance by the school’s kapa haka group. “We have more students involved this year in the planning and preparation and some, like the Scottish group, invested well-spent time in creating outfits to complement their cuisine,” says Mrs Sundrum.

She says the parental support has been amazing with many helping to make the food and transport it to the venue. It was very much a community effort as well with staff donating ingredients and All Saints Church of Howick loaning its trestle tables. Ingham House student leader, Georgia Beasley, says it was the first time the time-honoured tradition introduced dance performances to boost the cultural mood. The new school vision ‘inspiring a community of passionate learners’ was in line with the students going “all out”, she says. “This food festival encompasses that vision because all the people involved are really passionate about their culture and about cultures they haven’t tried yet as well.”

Seek advice before hitting the debt wall By Marianne Kelly

HE PERCEPTION that most people in the south-east take home “reasonable” incomes so are making ends meet does not always follow, according to a local budget adviser. David Houghton, spokesman for the Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting Service says often, when rents and debt are added up, there is little left. “It’s easy for those on a reasonable salary to be in deficit. If they earn $65,000 the perception is that they should be alright. But at $40,000 they struggle.” While two incomes are generally needed to make a budget work, he says many immigrants to the south-east are not used to having two sources of income when they feel that traditionally, one will do, he says. “People tend to not grasp the situation. They keep funding the deficit by borrowing and the next thing they have borrowed $5000 to fund their needs. This is not new cars or furniture. It’s a funding crisis with their car or their health. Suddenly they reach the creditor’s limits and then they come to us.” The Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting Service is affiliated to the New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services, funded by the Ministry of Social Development. The free local service operates autonomously with a manger and currently nine volunteers. But Mr Houghton says they could do with another five. “It’s a good part-time job – half a day a week.” National federation training involves six day sessions over six weeks and attending two annual professional development modules to attain a budget adviser certificate. “It’s an opportunity to learn and help others in the process,” he says. And, most importantly, a banking or finance background is not a pre-requisite. “Volunteers can come from all sorts of professional backgrounds; they must have customer service skills and we are non-judgmental.”

Issues dealt with are wider than many realise, he says, especially when people are borrowing finance which is not based on an asset. “When they are borrowing to pay normal expenses, they are heading for trouble and this is a good warning sign.” While there are no money shops in the south-east, he says the advisers sometimes come across people who have sourced finance, such as pay-day loans or from loan sharks across the estuary in Panmure. Also people draw down funds on bank credit cards that should be covered by income, and that credit eventually hits the end of the line. Referrals come to the Pakuranga service from organisations, such as the neighbouring CAB (Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau) and Work & Income (WINZ), especially involving single mothers or people on invalid or disability benefits who run into budget deficits. Rent, Mr Houghton says, is responsible for major increases in expenses over the past twothree years. “It’s hard to get a twothree bedroom house under $500 a week. That’s a big increase for a person on a lower income or a

benefit. They are the ones using food parcels. There are a lot of people who find a flat white and a muffin a luxury.” A lot of people have no backstop. People made redundant or forced to work lower hours quickly run into an income drop that affects the budget. “There are no few thousand dollars in the bank when the world stops.” While visiting a budgeting service can have a negative connotation in peoples’ minds, Mr Houghton says as budget advisers, the volunteers can discuss expenditure categories and offer personal budget advice. “We have conversations about every category of spending. We look at the cash being taken out, bank statements and get to what they are really spending. “We need to verify the information and then have a discussion, for example the fact that they are spending $100 a week on lunches and coffees. When we find a deficit, we work to turn it into breakeven or even a surplus, such as taking in a boarder or getting a part-time job.” “A lot who come to us see a budget for the first time, what it really is, and go away knowing it has been a worthwhile experience. “We also want it to be ongoing and not a one-off. We want to work with people to make sure they are on the right track with budget coaching. “If it’s needed, we can create a cash forecast of weekly income and expenditure so that money is built up for bulky items, such as when a Warrant of Fitness demands new vehicle tyres,” Mr Houghton says. “We want people to understand that they need to build up a surplus, maybe by allocating money to different accounts. “People don’t need to wait until they are against the wall or have reached the end of their ability to borrow before they come to see us. “If they can’t pay their bills on time, it’s not a bad idea to let us run through the process with them.”

HERE was a grand powhiri to greet the Rotary Club of Somerville, the new sponsor of the Duffy Books in Homes programme. The Duffy sponsors were welcomed by a kapa haka group at the Kingsford Primary School named after the famous aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. School students presented the representatives of Rotary with a lei (garland) each at the Duffy Books Assembly where the Rotarians handed out a box of books to children from each class. The Alan Duff Charitable Foundation, better known as Duffy Books in Homes, provides free books to more than 100,000 New Zealand children, three times a year. The idea behind it is to foster a

Ask anyone who has been through the seven-day rigorous, high energy residential programme, and all they say is “it’s life changing”! No more! The Times cornered two young awardees Scott Litchfield, and Matt Hamilton who were just out of the recently-held RYLA camp and instantly on to a bigger project. Scott, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay for RYLA says that apart from the impressive line-up of international speakers, the challenges at the prestigious leadership camp pushed him mentally and physically. “It revealed our strengths and weaknesses. “I had a true appreciation for all of my team members and the rest of the participants of RYLA,” he says. The last day of the programme was devoted to community service. “Warren Jack, from Habitat for Humanity, asked if anyone from RYLA would be interested in helping their charity project in Nepal from November 1-6,” says the 26-year-old with a diploma in film making. “Matthew Hamilton a fellow participant and I, put our hands up to help.”

Congestion all day

WHAT is our City Council letting us in for? The new $6 billion ($9.05b) rail system in Honolulu, Hawaii is only 10 per cent complete and is already $900 million in deficit, and it is above ground. Will we suffer the same fate? The NZ dollar is weakening and prices will skyrocket and for what? Just so a few rail passengers can ride on the train up town instead of walking, something which probably did them more good than harm. We need cars off the roads and rail won’t even put a dent in the congestion. Other cities such as Singapore have introduced ways to slow down car use which obviously would not be popular here, alternate days to use your car, inner city congestion charges and high tariffs on car imports, may be extreme but the alternative is to sit jammed up on the motorways, which gets worse day by day. Motorway congestion used to be an early morning and late afternoon treat. Now surprise, surprise, it happens all day. Bob Wichman Botany

Allegations of racism

RE SUPPOSED racism in Auckland’s housing market (Times, July 16). It seems to be getting to the stage in this country when any comment unfavourable to a minority, particularly Chinese or Maori, automatically rouses allegations of racism, irrespective of whether the comment has validity or not. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross labels Phil Twyford’s disclosure that people with Chinese names, who are 9 per cent of Auckland’s population, have recently been 39 per cent of successful bidders at recent property auctions “reprehensible racism”. His comments though should be viewed through the filter that as a National party MP it is part of his job to energetically pour cold water on Labour party initiatives, and as Howick ward has the highest proportion of ethnic Chinese of any Auckland ward, for him to get offside with them could have an impact on his job retention at next election. (I seem to recall that recently someone stated that there were 22,000 empty homes in Auckland). This belief is strengthened by frequent stories of people with obvious European heritage being outbid at auction by other bidders of obviously Asiatic heritage. I am aware of a Howick house which recently sold for 50 per cent above its July 2014 valuation after a bidding war between two bidders, both of Asian ethnicity. As the Government up until now has dilly-dallied on establishing an official register it is impossible to distinguish between overseas purchasers and NZ residents, but the difference between 9 per cent and 39 per cent is significant. While those statistics based on surnames are far from perfect, they are the best we have at the moment, and do give a bit of back-

ing to the beliefs of Aucklanders as to where some of the responsibility for high prices lies. Unpalatable as the foregoing facts may be to some, automatically yabbering “racism” will not make them go away. HEH Perkins Botany Downs

Contrary to God’s Word

SHAUN Walton: (re Feedback – Times, July 16), you must understand that no weight of words, no change in the law, nor any other form of manipulation can alter the fact that homosexual behaviour is contrary to the Word of God. He is not a man that He can be manipulated or threatened. He does not lie or change His mind. He loves you. Nothing will change that, but as long as you remain in sin (that is, behaving in a way that is contrary to His word) there can be no salvation for you. The Bible says ‘the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ That is, for all who sincerely commit to Him. Do not be misled either, by any church or person claiming to be ‘Christian’ but not following the Word of God. There are many who make such claims, falsely. We can coexist

IAN George describes secularists as “waging a war of ideologies” when all they actually desire is an equitable society for people of all religious beliefs and also for those who have none. The narrative he tries to create, is typical of believers when the position of privilege their religion has held in a society begins to fade, with the use of scare tactics to imply that without it, the current media bogeyman, Islamic extremism, will take control. While I agree that the actions of these individuals are deplorable, I would remind him that followers of other religions, including Christianity, have behaved in similar ways. For example, the indiscriminate bombings carried out by Christians in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles” or more recently Christian actions in Uganda and also in Tripura, India, in the form of anti Hindu violence. Of course, the actual reality is that those who carry out such extreme acts, believe that they and they alone possess the only “truth” that people need. In contrast, secularism allows people with different beliefs to coexist. Given the nature of our pluralistic, multicultural society, this would seem the most sensible way forward if we are to promote true tolerance and understanding. Paul Bennett Shelly Park

Dogs on leashes please

IN USING Lloyd Elsmore Park and enjoying the freedom of its wide open spaces, I am appalled at the lack of signage relating to the conditions and privilege of exercising dogs. Whilst golf and the flying model aeroplanes is prohibited, many dog users freely allow their dogs to run off the leash and become a threat to other people playing sports, or simply walking and enjoying the park. I have noticed that the dogs are taken by car, often more than one animal to roam at will, and the owners by their actions showing no concern for other people. Ball throwing using a stick and cup attached is great fun but witnessing animals defecating, and their owners not picking up the dog droppings is a selfish and unhealthy act towards other users. I have owned dogs and see it practical for dogs to use the park on a leash at all times and their owners to take care and pick up the dogs faeces. How the Local Board has allowed this situation to continue is surprising when election times produces so many promises of wanting to help the public. D Spencer Howick

E ARE fellow Aucklanders living on the southern side of the bridge and were dismayed to hear that the Takapuna Beach Holiday Park is at risk of being closed. My wife and I have become frequent campers (in our VW van) at the Takapuna Beach Holiday Park since we found out about it and its glorious position. It’s absolutely amazing to be able to skip over the bridge and feel away from it all right on a beautiful beach yet have all the cosmopolitan amenities within walking distance (not to mention the beautiful coastal walkway).

For example, we love going to shows on the North Shore (among others the Monday Morning Melodies every month at the Bruce Mason Centre within walking distance of the camp) and make a two or threeday holiday out of it, telling our kids we are off “overseas” to stay at the beach (or more to the point on the beach). Surely this gem needs to be preserved for future generations. If restored/renovated (without losing its cosy camp atmosphere), the holiday park would become a magnet for the ever increasing number of inter-

Stuck at Cockle Bay

Thursday 5pm. It happens every year, and this unlucky dad who drove out onto Cockle Bay (below) to pick up his son’s boat found out the hard way. An unsuccessful attempt by a local with a small tractor was made then a larger 4x4 turned up and risked becoming stuck but was lucky and managed to pull the small van out. Just as they made the safety of the boat ramp a heavy haulage tow truck turned up but was not needed. Barry Wood

national visitors travelling in campervans and the like who can’t afford to stay in hotels – being able to experience something unique to NZ. If marketed well (although word of mouth would soon spread the word world-wide in our connected world) the camp would soon provide a very healthy financial return on investment too! We have already made a submission to the “Save Takapuna Holiday Park Appeal” but felt compelled to write to you too to pass on the feelings of just about every passer-by who walks along our van on the

coastal walkway between our site and the beach. While we are sitting in the back of our van enjoying breakfast or just relaxing, looking out over the walkway to the beautiful vista, not only does just about every one of the many people who walk by give us a smile when they see us, many even stop to have a chat, and it is surprising how many are aware of, and are not at all happy about, what is being planned for the camp site. In fact we haven’t come across anyone yet who is in favour of closing the camp and replacing it with a

“high performance yachting centre”, and that includes a keen yachtsman or two we spoke with. What really prompted us to write in again though is the action of one very enthusiastic passer-by who stopped, said she saw us on a previous occasion when she was walking by and thought that what we were doing so exemplified the NZ way of life that she asked if she could take a photo of us. This is what, rightfully, the Labour housing spokesman was raising the alarm over, albeit belatedly, and in a clumsy manner. It is not racism, not even ‘veiled racism’. It is a matter of national concern. All New Zealanders are well aware that our citizens are made up from all over the world. This is nothing new to us – it is just who we are. In selling off-shore, no matter how much overseas dollars are ‘earned’ in such transactions, we are selling our heritage, our way of life, our mana. Allowing this to happen is paramount to turning our peoples into the peasants of the future, in their own land. This, indeed, is ‘reprehensible’ and is not too far away. CJ Martin (Mrs) article with the above headline (Thursday, July 16) that is even more provocative. Yes, it is not good that Labour’s housing spokesman based his concerns at the connections buyers of Auckland properties have, on the basis of their surnames. However, his worries are not unfounded. Many of today’s buyers are obtaining their purchases by using the extremely low mortgage rates their overseas governments allow them (their nationals) in order to procure properties which, for them, are at ridiculously low prices. New Zealanders, from whichever ethnic group, have no hope of competing against this practice. Also, because of the readily available funds to their citizens, these folk are not only buying a family home, but some are even competing against each other to amass as many letting properties they can; some boasting

of having over 30 rental properties in their NZ portfolios. (A quick check of how many renters have the same Landlord will verify their boast.) Why should New Zealanders be worried at these overseas customers (or local customers using overseas funding) buying up all the real estate they can? The answer does not take much thinking about. When times get hard, mortgagees often foreclose on the mortgages they have approved. In the cases where the borrower has over-extended, who then ‘owns’ these properties? In many cases today, this translates to a foreign power taking over the ownership of the property. This is the problem. The question we should be asking is why would our Government trade overseas dollars for ‘giving away’ NZ’s land, farms, businesses and houses? This is what our Government seems happy to allow.

Sunstrike crash

RE DELIVERY goes awry, ‘Sunstrike smash’ (Times, June 25). Wow. A similar thing happened to me. I was driving around Island Bay/ Owhiro Bay when I came around a bend I got sunstrike, hitting a truck head-on which was parked right on the road as there were no sides of the roads to park on. And I slowed down but couldn’t stop because there were no sides to stop on. Trying to figure out who’s to blame here. Spaghetti bolognese Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

• 600g pork mince • 2 carrots, diced small • 2 onions, diced small • 4 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tsp Gregg’s fennel seeds, crushed • 2 tsps Gregg’s parsley • 2 tsp Gregg’s thyme • 140g Leggo’s tomato paste • 400g Delmaine crushed tomatoes • 1 bay leaf • 350g Diamond spaghetti • Cerebos chilli salt grinder (optional) • 50g Perfect Italiano parmesan Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil

Heat a little olive oil in a pot and brown the pork mince well. Add the carrot, onion and garlic and cook for a few minutes more. Next add the fennel, parsley and thyme and stir around. Greenland Bakery serves up pies on the prize T

his year the pie makers in Botany will be busy polishing three new silvers to add to their significant collection of prizes. Just last week the jubilant team at Greenland Bakery and Cafe bagged three silver awards at the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards for their vegetarian, chicken and vegetable, and gourmet meat (chicken, bacon and mushroom) pies. Of course, it’s not the first time the humble vegetarian pie has been recognised nationally, and has earned numerous awards including gold in 2012. The following year the landmark bakery in Botany Town Centre took out the supreme prize for the mince and cheese variety along with a host of other accolades. While last year was lacklustre compared to most, this year, the team is back on form. The unique family-run operation by baker brothers, David and Bill Liem, rely on tried and tested recipes and have perfected the art of a crisp, flaky pastry encasing a flavourful filling. David says he tweaked the recipes of this year’s entries slightly to reflect a better balance. “We use fresh ingredients and bake the pastry to a nice colour and make sure there is plenty of filling.” The highly popular chicken and vegetable has a medley of vegetables such as carrot, potato, pea, celery and broccoli – perfect for warming up with on a cold winter’s day. David’s sister Alissa Liem, says although they were expecting gold,

there,” says Alissa. Although the pie purveyors don’t specialise in frozen pies, they can make special arrangements if patrons notify them in advance. As well as the fresh pies baked daily, the eatery also boasts a stellar range of desserts – the coconut slice and caramel slice are very popular, says Alissa. The Liem family is especially grateful to Bakels for providing them

OUSEHOLDS in the Auckland region have the greatest choice of electricity suppliers, providing consumers with more options and potential savings of nearly $70 million. New figures from the Electricity Authority estimate last year over 107,470 Auckland households switched providers, and could have saved an average annual saving of $136. Last year four new providers entered the Auckland region, now offering consumers a choice of 21 brands depending on their network. “We are pleased to see such an active and competitive market, and encourage more residents to shop around to check they are getting the best deal,” says Electricity Authority chief executive Carl Hansen. The new brands that have entered the market are Tiny Mighty, Flick Energy, Opunake Hydro and Ecotricity. “Switching rates in this region remain high with Auckland the fourth most active region in New Zealand,” says Hansen. “It’s important consumers realise that their choice of retailer makes no difference to the reliability of their electricity supply – those outcomes are affected by the performance of their local distribution network and by Transpower, and is the same regardless of which retailer consumers choose.” Across New Zealand we con-

tinue to see high switching rates. New figures from the Electricity Authority show that over 385,000 households switched electricity providers in 2014. If all eligible Kiwi households had switched to the cheapest electricity provider during the year they could have collectively saved $281 million or an average of $162 per household. “As winter really starts to take a hold, now is the right time to check your plan,” says Hansen. “Even if you’ve switched providers in the past, we encourage all consumers to regularly check, as offers change. Heading to the What’s My Number website makes this easy.” “Checking your deal doesn’t mean you have to change plans, and it doesn’t have to be about finding the cheapest provider. Sometimes it’s just a matter of knowing what alternative services

are being offered and what other incentives might be right for you,” Hansen says. Changing electricity suppliers is very straightforward. A recent Electricity Authority survey of consumers showed that 90 per cent found it easy. “Once you have identified the potential savings on What’s My Number you can simply click through to Consumer NZ’s Powerswitch website to compare your options and start the switching process,” says Hansen. “Alternatively, you can call the new provider who will manage the change for you.” What’s My Number is run by the Electricity Authority in partnership with Consumer NZ, and puts choice in consumers’ hands by helping them to shop around. and good condition.” A third of Kiwis, according to the survey results, are concerned about the impact a damp, cold or mouldy house has on their family’s health, with half of renters experiencing condensation every morning in winter. Renters have 4.7 sick days a year on average compared to an overall average of 2.8 days. They are also more likely than other groups to throw another blanket on the bed, wear warm socks and thermals to bed, and sleep with their heads under the duvet. Just over a quarter of respondents said they would like to be living in a warmer, drier, healthier home in the next five years. More than a quarter said they had moved out of a house

because it was cold, damp and mouldy, with a 30 per cent yearon-year increase in the number of people who had done so. Levels of condensation and mould inside houses which are triggers of respiratory diseases, such as asthma, continue to be widespread with 82 per cent of recipients saying they experienced condensation in their houses. More than half of New Zealand households are affected by asthma or allergy and a quarter of respondents to the survey suffering from asthma or allergy said their living arrangements aggravated symptoms. Mr Gordon says the survey results highlight the fact there are still serious issues with much of New Zealand’s housing stock that need addressing.

Close to 40 per cent of respondents had between two and five sick days in the last 12 months. “Homes are mouldy, cold and damp which means householders get sick, are forced to miss work and school, which then impacts on productivity, earnings and education,” he says. “The burden on these people, and the country as a whole, is considerable.” However, he says a pleasing aspect of the survey results is a greater awareness of the link between the state of a person’s home and the health of the people living inside it. “Across the board there is a desire to live in a warmer, drier and healthier home with more than a quarter of respondents wanting to live in a better home environment. “For instance, having insulation, double glazing, a heat pump and ventilation is more important to people than a good school zone. “There is also a willingness to improve living conditions with more than a quarter wanting to renovate and improve their current home rather than moving. That’s great news because a big part of renovating is about improving the standard of a house, and at the same time making it a healthy place for a family to live.”

HE doom and gloom of home ownership seems to be increasingly desperate with more than half of the Kiwi respondents to a recent survey saying it would be difficult to buy a house without financial support from family or friends. The second HRV State of Home Survey, conducted by research company, Buzz Channel, says 62 per cent of respondents said family or friends’ help would be needed. Also 41 per cent said they were not likely to own a house in the next threefive years. Yet owning a home is still the Kiwi dream, with 86 per cent of Kiwis aged between 18-34 years having a goal to own their own home. However, the reality, says Bruce Gordon, chief executive of HRV, is very different with 44 per cent of those surveyed believing their parents were now expected to help their children buy their first home. “Something needs to be done to help first home buyers. But at the same time there needs to be a focus on improving the condition of New Zealand’s housing stock in general. “New Zealanders may also need to look at long-term renting as an alternative to home ownership, which makes it even more essential that the country’s rental housing is in safe

‘A’ teams clean up

RIC Wilson, a long-time member of the Pakuranga Tennis Club, has been honoured with life membership. Wilson has been involved with the club for more than 30 years and has served on the executive committee for 25 years. In 2000 he took on and continues in the role as grounds and maintenance manager. He has also been involved in the running of the bar for more than 18 years, firstly as assistant manager then as manager for the last 12 years. Wilson also manages the purchasing and retail of the club’s uniform. He has played tennis with Pakuranga for 30 years both socially and competitively representing the club in interclub at different levels from1986-2013, both summer and winter.

BOTANY Downs Secondary College’s A1 and B1 badminton teams each took out their grades at the Eastern A and B grade competition at Lloyd Elmore Badminton Hall. BDSC’s A1 team played eight matches and won all of them (each match is made up of 6 games). Total games won were 42, and lost 5. Their B1 team played 8 matches and won 7 with total games won 36, and lost 11. The college’s A2 and B2 teams came fifth in their grades. HE Pakuranga United Premier Reserves have claimed the George Nicholson Cup for the first time in the club’s history with a thrilling 35-30 victory over Ponsonby at Bell Park on Saturday. The victory continues the fine run the club has had over the last five years in the Auckland club competitions. The game started very positively for Pakuranga with the forwards dominating early and, if not for a few handling errors, Pakuranga would have been off to a flying start. The passes soon started to stick with Steve Afoa and Kaleti Maupese crossing for tries with both being converted by Travis Sherlock for Pakuranga to lead 14-nil. Soon after, Ponsonby slotted a penalty to reduce the gap to 14-3. From the restart, Pakuranga again dominated possession and scored again this time to co-captain Charles Gibson with Sherlock again converting to give Pakuranga a 21-3 half-time lead. The second half started like the first with the Pakuranga forwards providing good clean ball for the backs and two more converted tries to Lui Morel and co-captain Mark Dickison to take the lead out to 35-3 with 20 minutes to play. Fortunately for Pakuranga, the Ponsonby kicker was having a bad day, only converting one of the five. Watched by a very large crowd, the referee blew the final whistle with both players and fans erupting with excitement. Pakuranga also had their U21 side in their final at Eden Park at the same time. After coming from fifth on the table three weeks ago to make the top two, they were just pipped at the post by a determined University side 21-17 after Pakuranga lead 17-9 midway through the second half. Whilst it was not the result the side was after, they continued the fine performances of the Pakuranga U21 side in recent years and were warmly welcomed back to the clubhouse by President Michael Biddick with celebrations then going on late into the evening.

Boks serve World Cup warning Agnew’s Angle

GUTSY defence and a slice of luck got the All Blacks home 2720 in Sunday’s Ellis Park rugby test, but the Springboks served a warning they’re going to be a force to reckon with at the World Cup this year. With the Boks dominating the breakdowns, it took a marvellous break and a Ben Smith try for the All Blacks to equalise at 10-all at halftime after fullback Willie le Roux scored a corker for the home side. A brilliantly timed Handre Pollard pass and a wonderful line run by Jesse Kriel for the try raised Boks hopes until Malakai Fekitoa set up a cracker for flying hooker Dean Coles and Richie McCaw scored the clincher from a beautifully executed lineout. However this was a loss South Africa will rue after outstanding lock Lood de Jager went within a blade of grass from scoring after a lineout drive. Still it will have done wonders in boosting their World Cup hopes. In de Jager and Eben Etzebeth they have two outstanding athletic locks to follow in the wake of injured veteran Victor Matfield, who should recover in time to be in the mix for the World Cup. And in Handre Pollard, Damian de Allende and Kriel, they have three brilliant young match winning backs

who are going to be a major force on the world stage for years to come. Pollard has all the skills of a truly great first five-eighths, while the centre combination of de Allende and Kriel combine slick passing with explosive running. It is interesting that whereas Steve Hansen’s All Black selection panel put so much weight on experience in remaining loyal to their veterans, their South African counterparts are promoting exciting youth. Still Hansen and his co-selectors will take encouragement from Lima Sopoaga’s splendid debut in a test in which man of the match Charles Piutau cemented his World Cup berth. Solid under the high ball, the livewire Piutau saved one try with brilliant covering work and featured in several muscular runs. When Julian Savea returns to the left wing, there is a case for moving Piutau to the right and putting Ben Smith back to his favourite fullback berth. It wasn’t as though Israel Dagg played badly. But Smith offers a greater attacking threat there than on the wing where he receives less ball and can be too easily isolated. Once again McCaw and Kieran Read were outstanding in providing leadership for a hard working pack of forwards who responded courageously to the Boks’ challenge. Not only did Coles scorch to a try with the speed no other hooker on the globe can match, but he made 14 tackles and missed none to confirm his growing importance. Courageous Brodie Retallick once more relished the hard grind despite playing throughout with a painful

ankle. Once again it was a triumph for the All Blacks character when placed under severe pressure as only the hard-minded Boks can apply it. Now, however, with young Pollard their tactical genius and centres de Allende and Kriel such a threat, South Africa have far more weapons to fire to severely test any defence put against them. Ice hockey milestones IAN Wannamaker, a veteran of Botany Swarm team which plays in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League, played his 100th game against Dunedin Thunder at Paradice Botany Downs on Saturday. Wannamaker has been a teacher at Sancta Maria College for the last nine or so years. Milestones are coming up for other Swarm players. Team mate Michael Attwell also clocked up his 100th game against the Thunder on Sunday. Samuel Boniface will make his ton against West Auckland Admirals at Botany on Saturday August 8 while Andrew Hay will notch up 150 NZIHL games against West Auckland Admirals at Botany on Sunday August 9. Milestones already achieved this season include Brandon Contratto notching up 100 NZIHL points, the seventh all-time highest scorer while KC Ball hit 150 NZIHL points to become the fourth alltime highest scorer.

U12 All Star squad finalised THREE Howick Pakuranga players have been named in the U12 All Star Baseball squad named for the Cal Ripken World Series. Taylor Irwin, Te Aati Paul and Huriwaka Repia have been named in the team to compete at the prestigious Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Maryland next month. Head Coach is Dan Tan of the Howick Pakuranga club. Among the nontravelling reserves are Traye Wildbore, Tui Amosa and Caleb Impey. Baseball players from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Australia feature in the squad.

Fox in line for playing card on European Tour P

RO golfer Ryan Fox – from Beachlands – has been propelled into contention for a full playing card on the top-tier European Tour in 2016. Fox, 28, has made an impressive start to his Challenge Tour career with two top 10 finishes from three appearances before qualifying for The Open Championship and making the cut at St Andrews last week. The 28-year-old entered the week in 46th place on the secondtier tour’s order of merit, but the €32,000 euros ($53,700) winner’s cheque he pockets for the win means he bolts up to No 8, with €46,817 from just four starts, news media reported. The top 15 players on the money list at the end of the season are guaranteed a card on the European Tour next year. Fox at the weekend held off a determined challenge from home favourite Thomas Linard to capture a wire-to-wire maiden victory on the European Challenge Tour in Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in France. Leading by three shots at the start of the final round, Fox birdied the closing hole for a two over par round of 73 to finish on 14 under par, a shot clear of Linard, who pushed him all the way with
